5 out of 5 stars it is a must for ABBA lovers!.......2007-05-12

If you like ABBA music that is the movie you might want to see.I enjoyed watching it!

2 out of 5 stars I love ABBA.......2007-01-21

I bought this DVD expecting viewing it to be as enjoyable
as the other ABBA DVD's I have purchased. The "plot"
consists of a country and western DJ chasing ABBA all over
Australia to get an interview. Too much of the inane trials
and tribulations of said DJ and not nearly enough of the ABBA
performances. I love ABBA and dearly love to watch them perform.
I've seen -The Movie- about a dozen times now and saw something new
and very enjoyable each time. Lasse the director said the "plot"
was necessary because people would get bored if there were
nothing but performances. I disagree! I dearly love to see them perform,
I'm glad I bought -The Movie- and encourage others to buy it if
they love ABBA as much as I do!

3 out of 5 stars ABBA the movie.......2007-01-16

Music was very good but some songs were cut short. Too much showing "our hero" and his problems. Should have more of ABBA and less of him. Also, the plot was a little thin.

I waited a lot of years for this to be released in the US and it finally has happened. Awesome Movie and a must own for all ABBA fans of all ages. You will not be disappointed. Order it today!!!

5 out of 5 stars ABBA - The Movie.......2006-09-14

I last saw this production in 1981. I was stationed at the American Embassy in New Delhi at the time. Someone had it on a VHS tape, second or third generation ... it was a horrible copy. BUT: it was ABBA! This DVD release is SO much better ... WIDESCREEN ... DTS sound ... CLEAR! It immediately brought me back to that time period. ABBA had their fingers on the pulse of a time period that still pulsated with the Beatles' music, James Bond, the upheavals of Vietnam, the Munich Massacre, the Russians in Afghanistan, Nixon's resignation, etc. Their music, in contrast to many events of the time, was cheerful/upbeat. The girls in the group were positively lovely, the outfits the band wore were great, and the MUSIC was absolutely outstanding. This DVD covers it all. Forget the inane supposed "story," sit back, and be fully entertained by one of the world's premier musical groups. ABBA: like the song that ends the movie - THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC!

Over the course of nine hours, this sumptuous PBS documentary from 1984 chronicles the history of the Jewish people from biblical times through the 20th century. This is not, however, a documentary solely about Judaism; it is instead an in-depth look at the history of Jewish interaction with the world at large, a look at how Jews have shaped communities around them and how the communities around them have shaped the Jews. Host Abba Eban, who has served as foreign minister of Israel and Israeli ambassador to the U.N., is authoritative and knowledgeable in his explications. Using paintings, artifacts, modern cinematography of ancient sites, readings, and theatrical music, Eban brings drama and tension to events long past. The spanning of five millennia necessitates at times briefer detail than a viewer may like, yet it also provides a sampling of history that may provoke the viewer into seeking more information. This marvelous set should be experienced by anyone who desires a greater understanding of the Western world and the role of the Jews in shaping it. --Jenny Brown

4 out of 5 stars vhs tapes.......2007-06-11

The set of 5 tapes arrived in an insulated box but the tape box itself had
a dent in it. That first tape on that side of the box had split in two on
the plastic. I did write the company about it and they answered very quickly and said to send the tape back and they would replace it. My husband decided he would try to clue the broken piece. Fortunately it
worked so we decided to forgo the mailing back of the tape. The outer box
that this set was mailed in was not dented and we think that the box with
the tapes was damaged before it was put in the mailing box. Accidents do
happen and it would not prevent me from ordering again from this company.

5 out of 5 stars An illuminating survey .......2006-05-28

Abba Eban was not only the most accomplished and articulate of all Israeli diplomats, he was also a person of immense learning and intelligence. Had he wished he could have taken a different road in life and become like his close friend, Bernard Lewis, a great scholar. Instead he made a certain sacrifice and devoted his life to the cause of helping the Jewish state come into being and survive.
This nine- part series is not concentrated on Israel but rather is a survey of Jewish civilization. Eban tries to show us how Jews interacted with the surrounding world, both learning and giving to the larger native socieities. From Babylon and Egypt to the Western Civlization of the present day Eban relates a story of a small people's long journey and meetings with others.
This is an illuminating survey and will give anyone who wishes to know more about Jewish life and history a real opportunity to do so.

3 out of 5 stars heritage .......2005-11-26

this documentry tells the story of the jews from anicent times to the present day. and yet there is no documentry that tells the story of tthe muslims even though there are several laws saying that PBS AND OTHER PUBLIC BROADCASTING STATIONS HAVE TO.there is no documentry about the arabs from PBS to date that tells the entire story of the muslims without historical inaccurcies or just being able to gave a complete history of arab culture so the shortcoming is not on the filmakers it`s on PBS`S inabilty to broadcast documentry which is the exact opposite.

Description

This six-part chronicle of the birth and development of the Jewish state is hosted and narrated by former Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. Abba Eban, who also hosted Heritage: Civilization and the Jews. Eban, who played a pivotal role in realizing the dream of a Jewish state, points out that "the series is designed to provide an essential context to an inspiring human story."

Among those featured in interviews and rare archival footage are U.S. Presidents Harry Truman and Richard Nixon, and key leaders Winston Churchill, Anwar Sadat, David Ben-Gurion, Golda Meir, Menachem Begin, and Yitzhak Rabin. Together with Eban's firsthand testimony, this series achieves a diverse perspective of both the Arab and Israeli experience. According to Eban, Israel: A Nation Is Born is a "depiction of the turbulent and dramatic history of Israel, through the conflicts and tensions of five decades, climaxing in the brighter prospects of Arab/Israeli peace."

5 out of 5 stars Very engrossing story of the birth of Israel and subsequent.......2007-01-04

This is a very engrossing story of the birth of Israel, the subsequent ingathering of the exiles, and the development of the young country.

3 out of 5 stars Lightweight, and biased.......2007-01-03

Abba Eban clearly loves his own role in history, and focuses heavily on events that he was a part of -- there's more about Israel's struggles at the U.N. in the late 1940's than, say, the '48 war. But Eban glosses over events in a rather underhanded way. For example, in describing the "Altalena" boat affair, he simply states that the specific events were deeply traumatic for Israeli society in the years to come... but I think we could stand to hear that the Haganah/Palmach actually shot at and killed Jewish Irgun fighters who were bobbing helplessly in the water, and this happened long after the Altalena had waved the white flag of surrender. In this and other ways, Eban displays a shocking bias toward the left. It simply is not honest about the events that modern-day Jews ought to know about. Because of his tendency to overload the brief chapters with diplomatic initiatives, rather than focus on other aspects of Israeli history or the conflicts as they occured on the ground, this series ends up being rather lightweight. And it lacks the emotional 'umph' that it ought to have. Cold, dry, not-so-factual.

5 out of 5 stars An inspiring series.......2006-04-21

This six-part series does a great job of telling the story of the rebirth of the State of Israel. There are interviews with and footage of so many historical and political figures, such as Golda Meir, David Ben Gurion, Yitzchak Rabin, Moshe Dayan, Anwar Sadat, King Hussein, Harry Truman, Abba Eban (the narrator), and Jimmy Carter. There are also interviews with Arabs living in Israel, among them Hanan Ashwari, whom I admire on one hand for her feminist work (esp. since it's not often you see such a prominent feminist in the Arab world) but also feel misgivings about because she's said a lot of anti-Israel things, as though Israel is almost 100% wrong and her own people are almost 100% right, with no gray area or just owning up to some of the basic historical facts presented in this series, instead of painting Israel as an evil monster that can do no right. It really disturbed me to see a poster of Arafat, the father of modern-day terrorism, on the wall behind her. The historical facts as presented here show the nation's miraculous rebirth, the struggle it had on its way to being reborn, all of the wars Israel has had waged against it over the years just to defend its existence (the first of which was waged against it when it had barely declared its independence), the anti-Israel bias demonstrated by the UN while at the same time turning a blind eye to terrorism and wars waged against it at every turn, the years when it has experienced peace and calm instead of constant terrorist attacks or preparations for war, what a good job it did of taking in so many immigrants (from Ethiopia, the former Soviet Union, Europe, Northern Africa, Yemen, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and those who voluntarily came from Western nations as opposed to immigrating because they had no other choice), what really caused the refugee crisis among the Arabs who fled Israel in the wake of the War of Independence, political developments, and, yes, the fact that it has made some mistakes over the years. But even though the government has made some mistakes, as all governments have, it doesn't change the fact that in 70 years, it went from a sparsely-populated near-wasteland to a thriving modern nation with a huge population, many new citizens taken in and made a part of society, and saw the rebirth of Hebrew, the only language to date which has come back from the dead. I don't see how it could be called one-sided, since the historical facts and evidence support these things so strongly, contrary to the lies spun by the anti-Israel lobby. Sometimes there is only one right side. They even, as aforementioned, had a number of interviews with people who have a different perspective on things.

However, I do agree that for the uninitiated, it might seem a bit overwhelming, since it does kind of start in media res. Someone not incredibly familiar with Israeli history might indeed want a lot more background information to put it all in perspective and understand the meaning of these names, organizations, and Hebrew and Arabic terms. It might have been better had it begun in the wake of WWI instead of on the eve of WWII, since the events that happened in the interwar years were so instrumental in shaping the course of Israeli history and its struggle for rebirth. It isn't fair to assume that just because you're already intimately familiar with this material, all other viewers are too. One also wishes there were a fourth disc in the series, to cover everything that has happened since 1997, the final year covered. Still, all in all, there's a lot of great material here and it should leave the viewer wanting more, inspired to read more and to find more documentaries like this one.

2 out of 5 stars Not for the beginner.......2006-02-10

I rented this DVD because of the glowing reviews here and because I wanted a better understanding of the origin of the modern problems in the Middle East. Overall, I was disappointed by this offering because it didn't give sufficient background and seemed to speak primarily to those who already had a knowledge of the subject. (It also seems to me to be *a bit* biased in Israel's favor vis-a-vis the Palestinians, but that flaw could be accepted and filtered appropriately.)

For instance, the documentary jumps right into the last Zionist Congress in 1939 (or whenever it was), but they never define what the Zionist movement is or where it came from. I know some of this from my reading, but it would be nice to have a summary here -- especially as it relates to the main players in the rest of the documentary. I wish the documentary would have at least started with WWI and the British occupation of Palestine after the fall of the Ottoman Empire, rather than picking up at WWII and mentioning some of the WWI details later. Doing so would have answered questions like, "Why are the British so important here?"

Another example is keeping track of the people, places, and organizations, which are often named in Hebrew or Arabic and are unfamiliar to the uninitiated. It made the sequence of events hard to follow because we had a hard time keeping track of who was doing what and where. Using more text on the screen, more maps, more recaps, and perhaps more English translations would have improved things greatly, methinks.

The film certainly has value, not least because it is told by a participant and first-hand observer, but it is not for those without much familiarity with the people, places, and issues at hand.

5 out of 5 stars Wish Ezekiel Could Have Seen This!.......2005-01-27

This is a Classy essential documentary. Not a question of if you should buy it; but rather it is a question of why you have not already! It is worth every penny!!! It explains and puts into context the Struggle of the Jewish people against German attempts to annihilate them, their stunning post-war ascension into Statehood in spite of the British (!!!) and the resulting International Geopolitical ramifications of this.
All of this amazing history is made clear and comprehensible in a DVD that includes rarely seen, priceless interviews with Zionist supporters such as President Truman, Clark Clifford and other clips such as that of Warren Austin and to many others to list that your children will not see in our ever increasingly anti-Semitic colleges and universities.
The segment which shows the crucial reading in the UN of the United States' recognition of the Jewish Provisional Government will bring tears and chills to anyone who has even the vaguest understanding of the Ezekiel Chapter 37 Dry Bones prophecy!
It is a mesmerizing story that every Jew and Christian in America should see. A story that spans the ages...of the struggles of a people to survive against supernatural odds and rise again to power and prominence in one of the few stories on earth that can literally claim to be a struggle of Biblical proportions.

Description

An enormously riveting and inspirational tale of WWII and the Holocaust like no other, PARTISANS OF VILNA is the first documentary to chronicle the amazing endeavors of the Jewish resistance fighters, who courageously staged a sabotage offensive against the Nazi army in the Polish city of Vilna. Co-written with passionate devotion by director Josh Waletzky and producer Aviva Kempner, the film has been lauded as "rich, poignant, terrifying and even ennobling" (L.A. Times).

5 out of 5 stars Not heros. They wanted to choose their own manner of death........2007-05-31

Audiovisual material is nearly necessary to get a realistic take on the extermination of yiddish jewery. Waletzky's material does very well in this regard.

More importantly Waletzky's commentary is on this DVD and as far as commentaries go, it added significantly to the deapth of the film.

One reviewer writes "Jewish community in Vilna put up a heroic resistance". They didn't. And this is an unrecognized aspect of the tragedy. A partial reason for this is because the jewish leadership were the first to be liquidated.

I'd suggest listen closely to Waletzky and mostly the witnesses. The witnesses express their frustrations, their own understanding of their hopeless situation.

That which set them apart from the overwhelming majority, decisive for their fate, was that they consciously decided to choose where or how to die. Paradoxically, this psychological stance, dramatically increased their chance of surviving the genocide. Many nevertheless did not.

Fighting back became a viable option towards the end of the occupation, when most of Lithuania's Jewery were already exterminated.

The resistance had no effect on the genocide. Their actions were uncoordinated and often hindered by Jews in the Ghetto who thought they would possibly live out the occupation, and their extermination that came with it, or often hindered by other partisan groups. There was not even one raid set against Ponar or similiar locations.

But view the film and learn "why".

5 out of 5 stars Excellent documentary on tragically unknown subject.......2006-10-17

The well-known Warsaw Ghetto uprising was going to be producer Aviva Kempner's focus when she went to Israel to interview survivors, but a recommendation by a museum director turned her attention to a lesser-known partisan movement. In the Jewish-quarter-turned-ghetto of Vilna, the partisans -- mostly Socialist, Communist and Zionist youths -- unified and slowly came to the realization that the Nazis meant to exterminate the 20,000 Jews left.

Partisans of Vilna tells the story of these courageous men and women, many of whom fought and fought for years only to be rewarded with the fact at the end of the war that 20,000 Jews had dwindled to 3,000. They had no national army to back them and were even faced with antisemitism from their Russian, Polish and Lithuanian partisan tallies in the cold Eastern European forests. Their hardest conflict, however, came against the local Jewish police, who tried to appease the Nazis by letting them take small numbers of Jews to the death camps in order to save the majority. That was a hopeless idea, but the film demonstrates that a hope that time would save the Jews was not ridiculous and eventually made sure more of Vilna's Jews chose not to join the armed insurgents.

DVD Extras: Accompanying this 20th-anniversary edition are plenty of educational bonuses. An audio CD of Yiddish songs from the film, mostly inspired or written by the fighting partisans themselves, is accompanied by a 10-page Yiddish and English songbook with voluminous notes. Also here is a 29-page study guide, with historical background, questions for discussion, a timeline and a stellar bibliography that will be perfect for those whose curiosity is sparked. Commentaries include a filmmaking-focused one from director, co-writer and narrator Joseph Waltezsky, and another by producer and co-writer Aviva Kempner, who gives greater historical context and reveals tidbits of information about the people and places that didn't make it to the film.

5 out of 5 stars Lost history.......2005-07-06

There is not nearly as much of this kind of material as there could be available. I feel this dvd did a good job of showing that the Jwish community in Vilna put up a heroic resistance even with the local community and he Soviet Union putting roadblocks in their way. To many people can only look to Sobibar or Warsaw when this shows how wide spread the desire was to fight back.
The educational materials, the CD of partisian songs with translations make this an outstanding resource for teachers as well.

5 out of 5 stars The battle for Vilna.......2005-05-07

This is the most thorough film of the resistance movement in Vilna, made in 1986 but only now getting widespread release on DVD. The documentary is told in retrospect by the survivors of the holocaust in Vilna, which resulted in the killing of over 90% of the Jews in what was regarded as the Jerusalem of Lithuania. For centuries Vilna had been a safe haven for Jews, a center of religious scholarship and a vibrant Yiddish community. As one survivor noted, Vilna isn't Vilna without its Jewish culture.

The film deals with the very troubling aspect of the Jewish police, or Judenrat, which was used by the Germans to keep the ghetto in line. Jacob Gens essentially served as the constable of the Jewish community during the German occupation, turning over members of the resistance with the false hope that this would spare the community at large. This led to horrible divisions within the crumbling Jewish community, which were painfully retold by the survivors.

The partisans took to the woods outside Vilna, joining up with Russian, Lithuanian and Polish partisan forces, and mounting a very effective resistance to German occupation until the Soviet tanks rolled in late in 1943. It was a tragic victory for the Jewish partisans, caught up in the wave of euphoria surrounding the defeat of the Germans, but having to bear witness to the destruction of the once proud Jewish quarter in Vilna.

5 out of 5 stars Abandonment and search!.......2006-10-06

This is a quite film with beautiful landscape and about people and a culture we don't know much about and filmed in Africa, the city of N'Djamena. Moreso than the theme of abandonment is the director Mahamat Saleh Haroun's importance to bring these images to the screen as he has said, "Otherwise we have a colonization by images." According to the interview extra in the DVD, it was very difficult, with no electricity at times, no official actors in the area, and sending the footage 2600 miles to Paris for processing and then to determine if it was ok to continue.

This is a story of two young boys Amine, 8, and his brother Tahir, 15, who suddenly discover that their father is not at home to coach a game. With no help from their mother, a bitter woman who speaks ill of him, they embark on a journey to understand why he left and to find him.

We don't find out what occurred in the marriage that he felt compelled to leave, but you get the sense it is not unusual in their society to be fatherless since it has endured years of civil war.

During that journey, they find out that their father hasn't worked for two years at the place they believed him to go each day. They soon recognize him in a movie at the theatre and they plan to steal the film from the projector room. Then, they get in trouble, are sent away by their mother, and asthmatic Amine becomes ill.

This is the director's second film, the language also includes French. (2002). There are two short films included which are quite ....interesting???......MzRizz

5 out of 5 stars Abouna.......2006-08-28

I enjoyed this film a great deal. The setting is Chad, I believe. Some place in Africa where they apparently speak a mixture of Arabic and French. The title translates as "Our Father." It's about two boys whose father goes away quite early in the film. They have a mother, but she's mostly a background figure. Quite memorable, though.

2002, subtitles but you don't care because dialogue is minimal. Gorgeous scenery, wonderful colors, not big budget but neither is it one of those shoestring jobs I've been reviewing a lot lately. Great, great story. Fantastic acting, wonderful characters, moving without being overdone, a bit of clever wit, and just an all-around damn fine movie.

5 out of 5 stars Africa of the Heart Shown in "Our Father".......2006-07-06

"Abouna" (translated "Our Father") is, quite simply, an elegant movie in the same way Africa is elegant. Director Mahamat-Saleh Haroun hews to the essentials of visual story-telling to give us a deep sense of the lives of these two boys, 8 and 15, and the place in which they live. The film is in Chad Arabic with English subtitles.

The DVD also features an interview with director Mahamat-Saleh Haroun and two of his film Shorts--"Goi Goi", and "B 400." Phil Hall who writes for "Film Threat" and "Wired Magazine" provides liner notes. He remarks that "Abouna is a perfect film" and explains why. You wouldn't be cheated if you bought the DVD just for these extras.

In his interview (in French with English subtitles) Director Haroun (known for his internatioanl award-winning "Bye-Bye Africa") says that he seeks to keep Africa at the center of things, not at the side-lines. May he continue in this effort of bringing the humanity of Africa to the eyes of the developed world. Not exotic Africa. Not troubled, bleeding Africa. Just Africa of the heart. Just our hearts, beating together, across cultures and worlds.

Product Description

ABBAMANIA - that was the name given to the hysterical worship of four Swedes that enthralled Australia during an intense period in the mid-1970's. This phenomenon rached its high-point as ABBA conducted an enormously succesful tour "down under" in March 1977. The feverish madness of the tour was captured on film in director Lasse Hallstrom's ABBA - The Movie, which remains as one of precious few opportunities to experience ABBA live onstage. In the film, we follow radio disc jockey Ashley Wallace as he tries to hunt down the group for an exclusive, in-depth interview. Will he make it or not... ? Experience the excitement of ABBA's music and the mania that surrounded them in this very first DVD release of ABBA - The Movie. The film has been fully restored and comes with remastered surround sound.

3 out of 5 stars For ABBA fans, this film has its appeal.......2007-04-12

If you had to have anything more from ABBA other than just their CD's, then I would suggest that this DVD is not too bad. Being film in 1977, this is when ABBA was probably just hitting their peak at popularity. The storyline of this movie is kinda cheesy. It seems like they just tried to make a story around an Australian radio DJ who was given an assignment to go see ABBA and get an interview from them to be played on the radio that weekend. So this DJ Ashley Wallace (Robert Hughes), with a half-hearted effort in the beginning, struggles all through the movie to catch up with them as he is unprepared to even show that he works for radio and getting close to them is nearly impossible as he tries to follow them from concert to concert all over Australia. The movie is mostly just seeing ABBA on stage performing live which are actually scenes of true live performances. The bit about the struggling radio DJ on a quest for an interview was just thrown in to make a mock movie of it all. But, it all does have a simplistic seventies feel.

The video quality is quite good for the age of the film, and it is 2.35 Widescreen and 5.1 Surround Sound. Agnetha and Frida are absolutely beautiful at this time of their lives. The lighting used in the concerts look really good. This DVD, and ABBA: The Definitive Collection are nice DVD's to have if you're an ABBA fan.

I rented it, I'm glad I did, I kinda enjoyed it. Some day, I may even buy it. But not right away. I just recently bought all their re-mastered CD's with bonus tracks. I'm really glad I did that because I was holding on to some first generation masters from about 20 years ago. Boy, what a great difference!

4 out of 5 stars austrailian tour-'77.......2006-12-07

this movie is made up of 3 elements: the australian disc jockey assigned by his boss to deliver an indepth interview with ABBA who've arrived 'down under' for a tour.
2:on stage footage of Abba performing their songs
and 3, the atmosphere and people of Australia.
lots of footage of the fans euphoric with the reality of finally getting to see their favorite group. one small scene in particular is so cute:a class of young girls dancing and singing to the song Ring Ring.
i've long been interested with that country down under, Australia, so it's great to see all the sights as i watch this movie. the movie travels from Sydney to Perth to Adalaide......not sure if there are other towns as well.
the on stage performances by Abba are superb. the camera work is excellent.
and there are multiple shots of the group seen backstage or in their hotel or being driven to and fro that are a treat.
as the movie reaches the half way point there is a lovely fantasy( a dream, really, wherein the dj has fallen asleep). he dreams he is surrounded by the four Abba members, all having a wonderful time and providing the dj with the interview of his dreams. this fantasy is set to the tune 'the name of the game' and for more of my thoughts on this song, see below.
for me personally, watching the group perform, it cemented what i had suspected........that Anni-Frid(the dark haired singer)really enjoyed herself being up there on stage. the others did too, to be sure, but Anni-Frid really frolicked up there and would mix in a little silliness with her performing. nothing overt but the more i watch of her the more i pick it up.
there is a short sequence were we get to see her working out with her personal trainer.
with the music of Abba i find a new song each time i listen to them that i was not familiar with but grows and grows on me until i'm realizing i've discovered another gem. and with this movie, the song i 'discovered' that has now acheived 'classic' status in my book is 'the name of the game'. the levels, the layers this song builds upon is facinating and addictive.
to show us where the music of Abba's is hatched, there is a facinating birds-eye shot via helicopter that zooms in on the tiny rehearsal cabin on a remote island the group uses in Sweden.
and i have to disagree with the other reviewer who thought the songs Tiger and Marionette awful. Tiger is the first song the group pounces into as they hit the stage(and the first on-stage song in the movie).
i thought it really was a great show opener and the other song Marionette, while i agree that it seems to break the familiar ABBA mold is not NEARLY awful! it seemed different and adventurous to me.
in short, i highly recommend this movie. some will be bored with the story of the dj but together with the concert footage and all the behind the scenes scenes, any Abba fan should be very pleased.

1 out of 5 stars So self-indulgent it is almost unwatchable!.......2006-05-06

First off, I am an ABBA fan. I was thrilled ABBA The Movie, after years of legal bueracratic crap, was finally released for home viewing in the US. After watching the movie, I realized it should have remained in legal limbo.

The plot (if you can call it a plot) is an Australian disc jockey whose fortay is country music (???) is ordered by his boss to get a personal and in-depth interview with Abba for an already planned radio show featuring them. Because all he knows is country music, he must quickly learn about Abba. He buys every teen magazine in the country. This disc jockey travels all over Australia trying to get the interview. However, Abba's bodyguard will not allow him to talk to the group. Will he get an interview before the radio show airs? Wow, what a cliffhanger!?!

The movie cuts back and forth with the disc jockey's adventure and Abba in concert, performing staple hits like "Thank You For The Music" and "Waterloo". But, like in any concert from any band, also has those forgettable "this is off our new album" songs. "Tiger" and "I'm A Marionette" are just awful. There is plenty of "Abba behind the scenes" footage, which is also used as part of the movie.

While watching the movie, I got a sense that Abba really, really thought they were the best thing the Beatles. It seemed like every other word in the film was "Abba". The disc jockey interviewed anyone (and everyone) on the street to get their opinion of the band. People thought the band was "great", "talented", "clean" (?), "sexy" and every other positive adjective possible. Having frenzied fans screaming "WE WANT ABBA!!!" through the entire movie made me want to throw my remote at the television. Ok, they were big, but 95 minutes of self-congratulating can annoy and disappoint even the most loyal fans.

4 out of 5 stars Es increhible pero al fin en DVD.......2006-01-27

4 out of 5 stars cute period movie.......2006-08-28

this movie, although it is lacking in sets and background, it's story is sweet about a member of the king's guard who secretly loves princess gwendolen who is on her way to be married to a king to save her father's throne.
it's cute and nice to watch.
a very rare movie and i was suprised amazon had this and especially on dvd!
i am glad i got 1 of the last 2 they had in stock.
i never thought i'd see this movie again.

1 out of 5 stars Most definatly not a interesting or lively movie.......2005-08-09

To put in plain and simple, this movie really has nothing to do with anything in particular besides the unromantic romance between a kings guard and a princess. Our movie begins one fine day when the Queen approaches the Kings guard with the proposition of his help to ensure the safety of their daughter as she travels with her dowry to wed the Sicilian King. Things go awry when a very dumb group of bandits attack them, and force the group into a broken down house, that just happens to sit in the very middle of a huge field. Now the fact that the placing of this house is very convenient, for the band of desperate, dirty ruffians led by Ron Perlman must rush into the open glade to attack.

If this wasn't bad enough, we find that the good guys have a certain adventage, possessing a feat known as the "Tigers Claw" Which is supposed to be a deadly weapon. What it really is is sending three people rushing wildly out into the field and slaying as many people as possible. They only manage to achieve this successfully for the 'bad guys' happen to be insanely stupid. The sword play is also the worst I've ever seen. Stances are sloppy, there's virtually no talent displayed, and the fighting reminds me of the battles I used to fight against my brothers. Really bad and totally lacking in realistic proffesionalism.

Oh, back to the story. Well, the 'bad guys' die without managing to kill even one of the opposing party. If this wasn't enough to make us convinced this was definatly a scripted movie, the way the guard and princess fall in love is even dumber. A few yells, proffesions of hate, and five minutes later they are in love. I shake my head in unseen disgust.

Also don't be fooled, some have said this is a movie that gamers will love, they are wrong. We gamers are not so totally dumb that a movie such as this will have us jumping for joy. Arrgh......There still has to be a level of intelligence there for us to enjoy it.

On the whole, this is a movie that has bad acting, bad camera work and equally bad music. Besides which the costumes where a few centuries short of being truly Renaissance. From hooped skirts, to the men's almost 1700th century styles, this definatly cannot be considered influenced by the century they where trying to portray.

In conclusion, don't rent, and most definatly don't buy. See if some unlucky friend of your's happens to have it first.

3 out of 5 stars For the ten year old Muskeeter........2005-01-19

Treachery, villainy, swordplay, noble secret love and a princess in peril: what more could the average ten year old would-be Musketeer ask for?

Set in the days of chivalry at sword point, "The King's Guard" is the tale of the "last stand" of a princess (Ashley Jones) being taken to a marriage that will save her father's throne and the young noble Guard (Trevor St. John) who secretly loves her, against the traitorous ex-Guard (Eric Roberts) who wants her and the greedy Lord (Ron Perlman) who wants her dowry.

This movie has nice costumes and I think that's where most of the money went. Ninety-nine percent of it takes place in one setting. There are no horses although the DVD cover shows a cavalry. The acting runs the spectrum from almost-painful-to-watch (Jones) to oh-good-someone-knows-what-they're-doing (Perlman, Roberts). The swordplay, although decently choreographed, is done too hesitantly by most of the actors to be truly exciting.

People who are into the Renaissance Fair, SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) and LARP (Live Action Role Playing) scenes may be able to glean some inspiration from the costumes and sword play.

Although there is much fighting there is no blood or gore so this would be an excellent family movie for anyone with young children going through a swashbuckling phase.

There are some funny bloopers after the end credits.

Worth a rent for gamers, worth a rent/buy used for youngsters.

5 out of 5 stars TRUTH, HONOR, COURAGE AND CHIVALRY.......2004-10-18

This fine Medieval tale of a proud king will fill your heart with a longing for the noble days of knights and castles.

4 out of 5 stars Fun, Clean Movie.......2003-09-23

I honestly cannot understand why some of the other reviewers have given this movie poor reviews. This is such a fun movie. It's a storybook tale charged with sword fighting, clean romance and good humor. I'm glad I was able to order one of these before you ran out of stock.

    Description

Winner of the coveted Peabody Award, Heritage - Civilization and the Jews is the monumental nine-part series spanning five millennia of Jewish history and culture. The series is hosted by former Israeli Ambassador to the United States, Abba Eban, who describes it as "a celebration of our common humanistic and moral heritage, explored through the mysteries of preservation, renewal, and resonance of the Jewish people." From the stony heights of Sinai to the shores of the Dead Sea, from a Greek amphitheater in Delphi to the Forum of ancient Rome, out of the ashes of concentration camps to the rebuilt cities and villages of Israel, Heritage brings to life the long and complex history of the Jews and their centuries-old interaction with the rest of Western civilization.

Accidents do
happen and it would not prevent me from ordering again from this company.

the very first disk was defective and i called the company and they told me "tough"

This is an illuminating survey and will give anyone who wishes to know more about Jewish life and history a real opportunity to do so.

ok i love history about our poeple wich is the jews and i love this movie i 1st saw this on t.v wow and it is not just arbarbs kid!!!!!!!!!!! ok u are wrong about that and it tells what you need to know
