If the scholarly tone and historical depth of Cosmos made that science miniseries akin to National Geographic magazine, then Hyperspace is like the National Enquirer. Each episode centers around a dramatic question (Will asteroids destroy the Earth? Could a black hole suck up our sun?) that is examined with slick computer-generated eye candy but fairly shallow content--for example, one episode argues that human beings need to colonize other planets because the sun will one day expand and burn the Earth to a cinder, but never mentions that the expansion of the sun won't happen for millions of years. Still, Hyperspace does present a variety of exciting ideas and may prompt viewers to learn more. The graphics are beautiful, host Sam Neill projects an engaging intelligence, and you have to love a television show that treats scientists like rock stars. Young science fiction fans will enjoy it enormously. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Hyperspace .......2007-06-04

Absolutely one of the best series we have ever seen! Anyone who is interested in HOW WE GOT HERE should watch it. Took complicated principles & made them as simple as possible. a must see!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent educational video for all ages!.......2007-03-18

I first saw this video on cable a few years ago and was so impressed with the special effects and how it captures the interest of all ages that I have now purchased it form my childrens teacher to use for science class in middle school. It is still so interesting to me and is far from being outdated!

3 out of 5 stars Hyperspace ... Beautiful attempt, but.......2006-12-05

The educational concept and execution of educational value behind Hyperspace is flawless, it's graphics outstanding and extremely engaging. I would rate this as one of the better astronomy series, especially for young minds interested in the subject of astronomy; but, would do so with some reservation and a recommendation that someone be on hand to explain some concepts that were described inaccurately and that would mislead the person who unfamiliar with the subject and topics covered.

An example is the statements regarding stars such as ours, evolving and exploding in a supernova. Our sun does not have enough mass to "supernova" nor does it have the companion that is normally associated with supernova's. Even to say that our sun will nova when all of the hydrogen is consumed is inaccurate, which this program more or less implies. Also, like many science programs, the viewer is lulled into the idea that mass and weight are the same thing ... they clearly are not! So be aware, there are items presented in this program that are inaccurate and explained incorrectly. Be prepared to explain them correctly if this is used in a classroom setting.

1 out of 5 stars Great for 6th Graders.......2006-09-29

This is great stuff for the folks who have been living in caves for the last 10-15 years. Absolutely nothing new here.

5 out of 5 stars Does what few Astronomy documentaries can do, Entertain while inform!!.......2006-09-01

After reading alot of negative reviews regarding this series I had to write my own and make a point that many of the negative reviews failed to even touch on and that is the entertainment factor. Lets face it documentaries are a form of entertainment that tries and educate you along the way and many documentaries fail horribly at this point. Take for instance Stephen Hawking's Universe. Universe has enough info in it to keep your mind busy for years to come but is presented in a way in which only Starbucks could help me get through it without losing interest or falling asleep. For anyone who is not an avid star freak, Stephen Hawkings documentary will without a doubt put them to sleep long before they learn anything interesting.

This is where BBC's Space absoulutly is leaps and bounds ahead of SH's Universe and many more like it. Sam Neil does a terrific job in presenting the information and along side the incredible computer generated graphics combine into a one two punch that few space documentaries can follow. Now with that being said there are a few flaws in this series, one being alot of speculation and not enough fact. However speculation, especially when dealing with the Cosmos is certainly not a crime and if we bashed on every person who speculated about the Cosmos we wouldnt be where we are today in the field of astronomy. Speculation is key to understanding todays cosmological models and to fault a series as well done as this one for doing just that is just plain wrong.

So as soon as you accept that this series isnt trying to outdo Segan's Cosmos or Hawkings Universe and is only trying to take some of the more interesting and more relevant astrological ideas such as life in space, black holes, what will happen to the earth eventually and meteorites, and present them in a fun and entertaining way. As a testament to this series, my 12 year old nephew isnt really interested in Astrology but sat through this entire series and then commented on how much he enjoyed it and that is where this series is leaps and bounds above some of the others. This series is capable of entertaining and teaching people of all ages wether they have any knowledge in astrology or not.

So to sum this up, this is not the richest Space series out there content wise and it may have a few flaws but in the end it ends up being exactly what I think the BBC inteded it to be. A very fresh and entertaining look into some of the more common and relevant astrological ideas facing us today. Sam Niel was absolutly 100% perfect for this narration and presentation. I recommend this for anyone who is even remotly interested in the Cosmos!!!

5 out of 5 stars star blazers and yamato rants and raves.......2004-02-29

I wish that they (Voyager entertainment) had done new digitally cleaned up and restored masters in 5.1 sound. The japan release have at least the option of stereo, or dolby 3 channel surround.
Most of the japanese release though also have deleted scenes restored, and new ones added in the t.v. shows. But they are not in english and are region 2. Some of the japan ones of the yamato films are "letterboxed" but not all of them. I have the first one Space Battleship Yamato and it is a cross between Matted widescreen which is really fullscreen stretched to fit the theater screen and Real 35mm widescreen. Matsumoto and crew took animated material from the show and shot it with a widescreen camera, mostly the special effects and things. Final Yamato also was presented in a 75mm widescreen format when shown in theaters and voyager does not own it. They told me they needed the original soundtrack (the japanese dialogue and sound effects) to do a remaster and they don't own them. Too bad Nishizaki could'nt have used his influence to have a remaster done for todays standards of audio and video quality, It could have been just the shot in the arm the fans needed to interest them in his newly proposed t.v. show. But many fans are outraged that Matsumoto and Nishizaki did not reteam, and matsumoto bowed out. And he promised to do his own version of the new yamato "changed to great galaxy" to avoid copyright infringement.

3 out of 5 stars Revised movie.......2003-04-15

This movie was aired in Japan and proved to be so popular that lines for the theater went around blocks. It was later decided to redo the movie as the Comet Empire saga. Which proved to be a great idea since most of the Star Force cast was killed in this movie including the Yamato getting destroyed. The Comet Empire Saga features footage from this movie and was edited for American viewers to imply certain characters had lived instead of being killed as stated in the movie. So you can buy this movie and The Comet Empire Saga and compare the two.

5 out of 5 stars Action-packed and emotional.......1999-08-29

I fell in love with this movie the first time I saw it-it's incredible! It takes place in 2202 AD when Earth is invaded by the Dark Star Cluster Empire and plunged into a seemingly hopeless situation. Part of the Yamato crew manages to escape to the Yamato's hiding place in the Asteroid Belt where they join the rest of the crew and the new captain, Admiral Yamanami. The Yamato fights heavily with the evil Emperor Scaldart's fleet on its way to the main planet of the Dark Star Cluster Empire. After a long ordeal the Yamato crew manages to defeat the enemy fleets and destroy the gigantic metal planet that was the base of the enemy, saving Earth again. The battle scenes in this movie are brilliant, I would have to say the best in the series. "Be Forever Yamato" is also has many very emotional scenes interspersed through it, and they add a great deal to the film's powerful effect. "Be Forever Yamato" also contains three "music videos," all of which are beautifully done. The last music video, "Sono Hi Madé," played while the Yamato is heading back to Earth at the end, ranks as my favorite song of all time. Top-notch filmmaking throughout!

5 out of 5 stars Three Ultras are better than one.......2006-02-17

This movie is great. The only problem I had was with the horrible enghish acting.I just change the audio to japanese with the eng subs.Other than that,I would recommend this movie to fans, but it seems this one was ment for kids.

5 out of 5 stars The kids and I love it........2004-12-31

I used to watch Ultraman everyday without fail when I was a kid. I bought this and let my kids watch and they love it too (to my surprise). Watching it now I can see the simple underlying moral of the story. Ultraman is a good hero. It's a great break from the slightly depraved Cartoon Network and Disney programming. And the direction is astonishing. Even without the subtitles, the story comes through clearly. My next purchase is the Tiga series.

      4 out of 5 stars Ultraman Gaia.......2004-01-03

I am a fan of Ultraman since I was a kid. I grew sick and tired of it as time goes by. Until I watched the first episode of Ultraman Gaia (series). It isn't the same old boring storyline with lousy special effects anymore. It somehow left the image of a children's program and became a science fiction drama. The most important thing is... There are two Ultramen teaming up to help fight baddies... And Ultraman Agul & Ultraman Gaia are cool!!!

Besides Gaia, Ultraman Cosmos is cool too. Check out his first movie, Ultraman Cosmos: The First Contact. They worked a lot of CG in this movie to improve all flying and fighting effects.

I hope its DVDs, preferably to be dubbed in Japanese (original vocal) with English subtitles, will be available real soon.

4 out of 5 stars Superb Ultraman Fun!.......2003-09-08

Enjoyed this movie and it's even better than its predecessor, Ultraman Tiga & Ultraman Dyna. This one has all the ingredients of a traditional action-packed fun Ultraman movie (and good acting from the two main characters of whom one is only a very young kid) without being too cheesy (in fact, this is the least cheesy after the dark Ultraman Tiga- The Final Odyssey).

As a fan of Ultraman, I just hope the superb Ultraman Tiga- The Final Odyssey gets dubbed in English and released on DVD as well as the hilarious (no pun intended) Ultraman Zearth movies, which are gems.

      2 out of 5 stars Hi!How are you?.......2003-04-05

4 out of 5 stars GOOD FOR NEW COMERS!.......2007-01-11

They were surprisingly good. I used them to explain concepts to a 60 year old with no "new world" skills and we both enjoyed the set very much. I have seen many films of this type and these put for some facts and ideas that were new to me. Over all there great moves, buy them!

        4 out of 5 stars Good Production.......2007-01-07

Voyage to the Planets and Beyond is a DVD well worth watching if you think about human travel to other planets and what the challenges would be to walk about Venus, Mars, or the moons of Jupiter or Saturn. The production demonstrates the stress of such long duration space flight would most certainly result. In fact, the human factor is quite light as compared to what will confront humans on such voyages in this century. The video is quite educational for high school and college level to understand the solar system and human spaceflight generally. I purchased it and would do so again.

How could anyone give this ... (Hyperspace) 5 stars? It is a complete bore, not bad enoughto be funny, just low-budget, low-talent debris. Those who dig the sleaze factor may find some amusement in Cybernator, but for me it was so trashy I couldn't stand more than 15 minutes.

5 out of 5 stars Richard Norton in Galactic Adventure.......2001-11-13

A top rating is rendered this DVD for the performance of Richard
Norton in "Hyperspace." In a cast of familiar names, most notably Ron O'Neal of "Superfly" fame, Norton gives the film its
best performance. He's trapped in a spaceship -- doomed to
travel space for decades -- and only one person from the crew can ride the escape vehicle back home for an attempt to arrange
a rescue of unlucky travelers. Straws are pulled, and one person wins...but the rest of the crew are not eager to honor the
results of the lottery! Sci Fi is always best served with a mix
of action and a touch of humor. True to form, Norton delivers!

Great Britain released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: it WILL NOT play on standard US DVD player. You need multi-region PAL/NTSC DVD player to view it in USA/Canada. Languages: o English (Mono) Synopsis: This parody of Star Wars was made long before it was actually released. Making it's debut in LA at a 3-D film festival; the reason for its languishment becomes more than apparent. The tale: billed in the title crawl as "Episode IV: The Last Resort," begins as the villainous Buckethead orders his diminutive blue, hooded minions to capture the rebel leader Princess Serina and take from her the radio transmission she swiped. The minions shove their ship into hyperspace drive and race off. Unfortunately they miscalculated their destination and end up in a backwater southern town in the United States filled with rednecks. The would be dominators of the universe encounter further problems when one of the soldiers accidentally gets locked in the back of an exterminator truck. The others, apparently not realizing that they are not where they should be, continue their quest for the transmissions and begin taking hostages. By this time the townies figure out that their visitors are from space and so call in a goofy UFO specialist to investigate. Special Features: o Interactive Menu o Scene Access
