Description
Bring home this special three DVD collection featuring the Ancient Rome and the thrills of the Colosseum. Discs 1 and 2 feature the award-winning program Rome: Power & Glory. For over a thousand years, Rome was the center of the known world. One of the most glorious empires in history, she brought to her subjects a common language , shared culture, and - for some - wealth beyond imagination. But nothing lasts forever. War, barbarian attacks, and moral decay eventually took their toll and the empire slowly began to crumble. This six part series presents the complete history of Rome, from its primitive beginnings, to the height of its glory to its eventual decline, as well as its legacies today. Filmed in 10 countries, Rome: Power and Glory combines location footage of ancient monuments, detailed re-enactments, period art and writings, and insights from scholars and public figures to bring the ancient world to life. And Disc 3 features the hugely popular Gladiators: Bloodsport of the Colosseum. The Roman Colosseum was the setting for more terror, agony and horror than has ever been witnessed anywhere. Emperor Trajan gave one set of games that lasted 122 days, during which 11,000 people and 10,000 wild beasts were killed. Often the fresh blood of gladiators was used as a cure for epilepsy. It was also considered a good luck charm for brides-to-be to dip their combs in gladiator's blood. Who were the gladiators? Where did they come from? How did they live? This fascinating video follows gladiators through their training, choice of costumes, weapons and style of combat to their rise to stardom and their inevitable violent death. So popular did some gladiators become that many Roman women were prepared to give anything to meet and be with the idol they worshiped. A compelling video insight into the violent, deadly world of the gladiators.

Rome: Power & Glory is a six-volume comprehensive introduction to the rise, rule, and fall of the Roman Empire. The series covers the political, military, and social history of the empire from its miraculous engineering feats to the exorbitant taxation that contributed to its downfall. Learn about ancient sporting events and Roman opinions on sex, fashions, slavery, and taxes. The series covers many of Rome's most famous, and in many cases infamous, figures, including Julius Caesar, Augustus, Nero, and Caligula. One of the series' main strengths is its coverage of all levels of Roman society, depicting the diverse strata of Roman civilization in all respects: economic, religious, geographic, and such. While providing a good general overview, Rome does not have time to make a detailed study of any one topic. The other disadvantage is a reliance on old gladiator movie footage that detracts from the seriousness of the topic. All in all, this is an excellent visual introduction to the history of the Roman Empire. --Tara Chace

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Educational.......2006-06-05

I would recommend this collection to anyone with any interest in history. Everyone in my family enjoyed it. The costumes and scenery are great and the stories are interesting. It's very educational for those of us who don't have a degree in history.

3 out of 5 stars A lot of good points, but they could at least disguise the repetition.......2006-02-20

This documentary is rather comprehensive, and it is interesting. It has a lot of interesting commentary, not always relying on "historians" but also on experts in different fields being examined.
But, as other reviewers have said, it's very repetetive. When you are watching 5 hours worth, you kind of expect that they would have cut as much as they could have, but they didn't. It is, however, difficult to not repeat things when you are trying to make logical points, as this documentary does. The problem is, they don't even try to pretend that they aren't saying the same things. They will use the exact same words to describe it, they will show the same video clips, etc. And, sometimes they use the same video clip for several different events, making it feel like a less-interactive real-time-strategy computer game.

4 out of 5 stars no romulus and remus.......2005-11-26

i came upon a magazine called history today it was an article about an archaeologist named simon leaphead who said the story of romulus and remus may have historical basis in a tale of two brothers named osto and mosto who lived in the year 6000 .B.C. this article was published two years before the documentry iam reviewing was released the filmakers could have interviewed mr.leaphead in a part of the documentry about romes origins but they didn`t they just talked about the empire like everyone else does they could have at least talked about THE ROMAN REPUBLIC`S HISTORY. am i right

4 out of 5 stars ROME: Power and Glory.......2005-10-14

Very comprehensive overview of the history of the Roman Empire; at times segments seemed to repetitive. Good overall.

3 out of 5 stars Power and Glory.......2005-08-10

Gives a good overview of Rome's rise and fall, but is somewhat repetitive, with many facts and stories being used in several chapters. Also video images are repeated many times.

    Description

Combining the pulse-pounding film traditions of the renegade cop and high-speed automotive action, "Banzai Runner" stars Dean Stockwell as Billy Baxter, a California state trooper who is frustrated in his attempts to stop a group of jetsetters addicted to the thrill of racing their luxury sports cars through the desert at speeds of over 200 mph. When Baxter learns that the Runners might be transporting cocaine, he goes undercover to chase down the lead Runner in a destructive winner-take-all test of speed and endurance.

    Customer Reviews:

    2 out of 5 stars Banzai Runner.......2005-08-03

"Banzai Runner" is without doubt a "B" movie with a definite "made for television" feel. But, it stars my Pantera - Cool! It's very predictable and full of corny lines, but lots of fun none the less. I expected a lot worse from what I had heard about the move, but I was pleasantly surprised. To quote my wife after we watched it for the first time, "It wasn't that bad. We've seen a lot worse." The chase and race scenes are fun to watch despite the lack of realism, and any car guy would love to own just about any of the cars used in the movie.

    3 out of 5 stars Banzai Runner.......2002-02-19

This is a decant movie for 'car guys' who like fast cars racing around, even a little fun watching them work to build a car along the way but other people may find it a little weak on the plot. The only actual 'bad' thing about it is that it shows it's age, or rather the age when it was made (mid-80s). The sceens with the super-hot cars racing across the desart is enough to make it likeable for any car guy and seeing Dean Stockwell's reaction (ie. emergency pitstop) after his first trip above the 150mph mark in a tricked-out, low-riding customized pickup is worth a good roll in the floor for anyone with a sense of humor.

4 out of 5 stars Great acting, great chases, movie... not so great.......2001-03-21

This movie WORKS. It is entertaining, fun, mindless, and includes some GREAT acting by Stockwell and most of the other characters. The plot is not particularly great, but it is not hard to overlook that when you are watching a movie that you KNOW is a mindless, fun flick. Which brings me to the car chases. Absolutely riveting. What this movie does different than in other movies is to consentrate on speed. Not explosions or gunshots or anything of the like, but pure speed. And believe me, it WORKS. A fun movie. I'm glad I bought it.
