Watching this enthralling documentary, one inevitably wonders how Islam, a beautiful religion, could have become synonymous with fear and hatred, even after 9/11. Inside Islam explores the historic and poetic wellspring of the Muslim people and illuminates startling commonalities among Islam, Christianity, and Judaism. Shades of difference between Islam's foundation and that of its counterparts prove more fascinating than divisive, e.g., Islam claims a direct line with Abraham via the latter's cast-off son, Ismael, while Judaism is linked to Abraham's more favored child, Isaac. Jesus, the Virgin Mary, and the angel Gabriel each play major roles in the Quran; it was Gabriel, in fact, who transmitted the Word of God to the 40-year-old, seemingly ordinary Muhammad in the 7th century, making him extraordinary to millions today. Sure, anti-Western sentiment creeps into the story, but in every important way Inside Islam is an antidote to gross anti-Muslim bigotry. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars Excellent !.......2006-07-06

An excellent report about Mecca, although the comments are a little different as on the sunna (Moslem Traditions), such as for example the history of Abraham and well of other subjects. However, the documentary is new for those which would like to know Mecca and its importance in the heart of a Moslem. In connection with South-African which was seen directing towards the camp-site of Africans of its country in the place to be with everone, it is especially not an act of racism: what he did not understand, nor the producers of the documentary, in the Mecca, the camp-sites are by countrys, so that when one loses oneself or his self, he can find or to be easily direct towards the camp-site of his country.

5 out of 5 stars Inside the City of Mecca.......2006-03-30

I loved this documentary and have made copies and passed them on to about 50 other people. I just realized today I could make a review about it. Who is that guy that does the talking in the backround, whoever he is, he was born to do it. I can't recommend it enough to non-muslims who will see a White lady from Texas go to Mecca. There are white people in Texas who are turning to Islam. You can check them out at weneedtonuite.com under the videos section. I wonder what it is that makes these people continue to make Islam the fastest growing religion.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent DVD.......2006-02-25

This was an excellent in-depth look at the Hajj or pilgrimage made by thousand of Muslims every year from around the world. This National Geographic DVD covers all the basics and alot more. I would reccommend this for Muslims and Non-Muslims alike

3 out of 5 stars 3 stars because it is too short.......2006-01-22

The video is well done, and beautifully photographed, as you'd expect from Natl Geographic. It is very educational as far as what people actually do on the Haj. I had thought the walking round the Kaaba was the climax but not so. Short, but good insight into something most non-muslims would never have the chance to see.

5 out of 5 stars a very beautiful virtual hajj.......2005-11-20

5 out of 5 stars Inside Islam.......2007-06-27

Highly recommend this DVD. It opens your eyes to true Islam and not the hype with the terrorists, by the way according to the infomation on this DVD are the infadels!! They are going totally against the teaching of the Koran. They need to re-learn their own religion. They have made up their own rules. The Koran teaches peace, fairness, equality, generousity, and a love of education. The terrorists are against all of that!! The Koran teaches respect of life and only to defend, it teaches that killing of women, children and civilians is WRONG! I don't know what the terrorists are following, but they should not claim it is Islam!!
They bring shame to a very honorable and respectable religion! It brought a lot to our civilization and has made many valuable contributions to a human kind. The terrorists are doing their best to bring shame to this great religion and because (like me) the general public don't know the true teachings, we re-act in fear and hatred. But if everyone viewed this DVD and learned the true teachings, they would understand that true Muslims are valuable and the terrorists are FAKES! Keep an open mind until you get the true facts!!

2 out of 5 stars Whitewash & Sugarcoating.......2007-06-17

This documentary is typical mainstream papalum about Islam. I gave it two stars instead of one only because of its relatively high presentation values, not the substance presented.

For the last two centuries, Christianity's and Judaism's holy books have been subjected to the Higher Criticism, their histories, teachings and leading figures ruthlessly deconstructed. But when it comes to Islam in the mainstream media, you don't get the Good, Bad & Ugly -- you only get the Good. Political Correctness still rules. Unfortunately, however, when it comes to Islam, much of the Bad and Ugly is really Bad and really Ugly.

THE BAD:
1. Islam was spread mostly by warfare, termed Jihad. Only modern-day Indonesia and Malasia were not converted mainly by the sword. Jihad has resulted in the death of untold millions. For example, the Indian subcontinent was subjected to a centuries-long Jihad, one of the biggest genocides of all time, according to the highly-respected historian Will Durant. The Hindu Kush mountain range means "Killer of Hindus", because of the countless deaths by exposure of men, women and children being transported to the slave markets of Central Asia by the Arab-Muslim Jihadists. The biggest penninsula on earth, Arabia, was made essentially Judenrein after Mohammed's death. Most of North Africa, the Levant and modern-day Turkey was Christian until the Jihadists conquered those lands. Jews and Christians were made dhimmis, official semi-slaves, under the Sharia (Islamic Law).
2. The biggest slavers of all time were the Arab-Muslims. Most of the African slaves provided to the New World came from West African lands, all of which were Muslim. Saudi Arabia outlawed slavery in 1962!
3. Women are officially second-class citizens in Islam. The Sharia-based penal code of Iran provides for the exact size of stones to be used during lapidation (stoning to death) of women for sex crimes such as adultery. The stones must not be too small (death will take too long), nor too big (death will come too fast). The great Muslim 12th Century philospher, Averoes (Ibn Rushd), bemoaned that in Islamic lands women were treated no better than houseplants and domestic animals. Nothing has changed. In Saudi Arabia, women can't even drive a car.
4. Reformation of Islam is stymied by the tendency of mainstream Islamic clergy and scholars to literalism,, i.e., the Koran is the unmediated verbatim word of Allah, Mohammed was the closest thing to the perfect man and should thus be emulated by all, etc. Scholars of Islam may not critically review the sacred writings of the Koran, Hadith and Sira on pain of death.
5. Under all modern-day religious schools of thought, apostates from Islam must be put to death. So much for a religion of personal conscience.

THE UGLY:
1. Islam is the only world religion without a cognate of the Golden Rule. One should treat his fellow believer with love, kindnes, charity, etc. As to the unbeliever, the infidel, he is to be slaughtered, converted or made a dhimmi (subjugated official semi-slave). The world is divided up into Dar-el-Harb (the domain of war, inclusive today of the North & South America, most of Europe, and large parts of Asia) and Dar-el-Islam (the abode of Islam). Unlike Judaism and Christianity, not to mention the Dharmic faiths, Islam has a dualistic ethical system, one for the pure, the fellow Muslim and another for the impure, the kaffir, the unbeliever (which includes polytheists, atheists, animists, secular humanists and all non-Islamic religions on earth). All the great religions, save Islam, have a UNITARY ethical code, i.e., a code based on a variant of the Golden Rule, in a nutshell, "treat one's fellow-man the same as you would want to be treated".

In this faux-documentary, none of the foregoing is even mentioned, let alone dealt with in an objective and balanced manner.

If you want to learn about Islamic beliefs today, you can view online FOR FREE an endless number of streaming videos on memri.org and pmw.org.il -- the typical Westerner, seeing the tsunami of hate and fanaticism spewed by clerics and elite Arab-Muslim and Iranian-Muslim pundits, is floored.

A great dvd on Islam is Robert Spencer's "Islam: What the West Needs to Know", available at Amazon.com

4 out of 5 stars Contrasting Contributions of Islam to Humanity.......2007-05-08

Inside Islam was released in 2002 in the aftermath of 9/11 to educate non-Muslims about Islam. The documentary clearly explains which relationships exist among Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Inside Islam also highlights the key events in the life of Prophet Mohammed. Furthermore, the documentary covers the five traditional pillars of Islam, the much misunderstood Jihad, the essential contribution of Islam to the Western Renaissance, and the history of Islam from the 7th century CE until the beginning of the 21st century CE.

Despite its merits in painting Islam in a generally positive light, Inside Islam does not highlight enough the multiple contradictions existing within the Qur'an. The Tanakh and Holy Bible are not exempted either from these contradictions. The Qur'an has given a small, but influential minority of Islam practitioners the rhetorical firepower to justify the most barbarous acts against other human beings.

For example, Surah II, 256, mentions: "Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from error: Whoever rejects Evil and believes in God has grasped the most trustworthy handhold that never breaks." Referring to Christians and Jews, Surah III, 113, mentions: "Of the People of the Book are a portion that stand (for the right); they rehearse the signs of God all night long, and they prostrate themselves in adoration." Surah III, 116, continues: "Those who reject Faith neither their possessions nor their (numerous) progeny will avail them aught against God: They will be companions of the Fire, dwelling therein (for ever)."

Terrorism cannot be successfully contained only through military means. Moderate Muslims have a key role to play in acknowledging these contradictions and marginalizing the minority of Muslims who cannot practice Islam peacefully.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2007-01-23

I thought this was a good intro to Islam. I do agree with what a few of the others said tho, they do mention the whole 9/11 aspect and that it was Muslims who did it. I see it this way, the people behind the WTC attack and Pentagon attack "claim" to be Muslim, but they are not. A Moslem would not think to attack someone like that; they would not think to attack anyone at all. The Koran is pretty clear on what does and does not constitute acceptable actions. Starting a war simply because you are jealous of what someone else has is not a good way to influence people that your cause is just.

Any rate, good show. The presentation was well done. They don't try to overwhelm you with the information, yet they try to tell you what you need to know.

4 out of 5 stars Good introduction to the religion of Islam........2006-05-12

This documentary does well to describe the history and tradition of the religion of Islam.
A warning to those that purchase this video, if you are looking for information that has the purpose of just describing the religion and not having any political undertone, this documentary does poorly. There are three short segments in the video where a narrator takes time to remind the viewer of the events of September 11th.
If I was purchasing a documentary on Christianity, I would not have the slightest interest in a subjective opinion of the personal faith and motivation behind certain groups or persons that claim Christianity as their religion(the 2006 president of the US for example).
The video does offer a lot of useful information regarding the religion though, despite a small smudge here and there.

Product Description

Inside the Islamic Mind: Understanding How Koranic Muslims View the West and the Rest of the World Fourteen hundred years ago, followers of Muhammad began their quest to bring the rest of the world into Islam (literally: submission to Allah). More often than not, this submission was wrought by the edge of the sword. Several times it looked as though JIHAD (literally: the struggle to bring about this submission) would conquer the known world. The last time Muslim armies were turned back in this quest was September 11, 1683 the day their when an alliance of Christian armies led by Jan III Sobieski, the King of Poland, arrived at the Gates of Vienna. For the Islamic faithful, this particular September 11th is frozen in time; a day when their glorious vision for world conquest was stopped. Our more recent 9/11, however, marks the beginning of the great thaw. Once again Jihad is alive and well and marching forward to take over the world. The West ignores this reality, with all its attendant religious, political and ideological implications, at its own peril. Fueled by a genies treasure trove of petrodollars and emboldened by the extraordinary effectiveness of modern terror, this challenge will only grow in intensity. It is absolutely vital we understand the Koranic mind. This DVD contains three separate documentaries that provide significant insights into this world.

5 out of 5 stars Islamic Propaganda on DVD!.......2006-12-24

I want to thank those who made this collection available. The idea that Islam is a religion of peace is one of the quintessential misnomers of our time. Islam has always believed in conversion by the sword. This belief stands in contradistinction to Christianity which conquered the Roman Empire without the sword (any Christian who teaches salvation by force has perverted the Lord Jesus' words.) There may be Muslims today who want their religion to be peaceful; but in the final analysis it simply believes in world domination at any cost.

Two out of three of the segments were written and produced by Muslim scholars and clerics who attempt to justify their actions down through the centuries. This is a must see for those who want to see what many Muslims in this country and world wide think of us and the rest of the world.

In the end, you will find that Islam has no hope; no good news. Islam is simply seventh century Arabian culture that has been religionzed and the idea of forced imperialism has always been at the center of their belief system.

5 out of 5 stars IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT.......2006-12-13

I saw this video after reading Michael Steyn's "America Alone" - which may well be the most important book published in 2006. This is a wonderful companion piece. The segment on Sayyib Qutb powerfully illustrates how the sincere Muslim views America and its own self-destructive battle with its religious (read: Christian) foundations. The other two segments, published by Muslim apologists, also helped me better understand how the Islamacist sees the world; specifically the 20th century and the evolution of the today's Middle East. This is of vital importance if we are going to win this, the fourth campaign of the 1400 year-old First World War. (Note: the quality of the last two segments -- while still perfectably watchable -- isn't very good. Looks like it was pulled off the internet, which given the way these people spread their message, it very likely was.)
