One of the best films of 1992, this acclaimed documentary focuses on the alleged murder in June 1990 of 64-year-old Bill Ward by his brother Delbert, 59, a simple dairy farmer whose defense became a rallying cause for the citizens of Munnsville, a tiny farming community in central New York. Known by all of Munnsville as harmless hermits, the Ward brothers (also including Lyman and Roscoe) live an 18th-century lifestyle in their tiny, grimy shack, sleeping in the same bed through cold winters and tending daily to their hayfields and livestock. Semiliterate and stunted by minimal exposure to the outside world, the Wards are disheveled children in the bodies of aging men; and when Delbert is charged with suffocating his ailing brother Bill, he's a prime target for legal manipulation and a media circus that's immediately drawn to his case. Filmmakers Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky spent nearly a year with the Wards and the Munnsville citizens who rallied to Delbert's defense, and their efforts prove that reality is often more compelling than even the richest fictional drama. As a slice-of-life study of eccentricity, country-folk stereotypes, small-town wisdom, and the power of the media, Brother's Keeper is funny, fascinating, and full of compassionate humanity. It's also a riveting courtroom mystery with characters that no casting director could improve upon, tracking the course of justice while leaving the viewer to mull over the truth behind Delbert Ward's alleged crime. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Cain And Abel May Have Met Again.......2006-12-15

Making a myopic documentary can often be a death sentence. But delving into one community and one family can be done well if you don't lose focus. And thankfully directors Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky (Paradise Lost and 10 Days That Unexpectedly Changed America) inherently realized this and kept their cameras firmly in the faces of the Ward family and their surrounding New York community.

Reeling from the alleged murder of 64-year-old Bill Ward by his brother Delbert, the Ward family and their neighbors circle their wagons in support of Delbert. From the get-go we're aware of the Ward brothers' minimal education and unhealthy lifestyle (their home is a stinking shack surrounded by a dairy farm). We're also privy to the fact that Bill was not a well man. His illness is never fully explained, but one could easily surmise cancer as a cause. Initially the story seems bent toward a mercy killing; Delbert smothering brother Bill one night to "put him out of his misery." But then homosexual incest rears up (none of the Ward brothers were married), as does animosity between the brothers.

Delbert initially confesses to the murder, but without legal representation present and without apparent knowledge of his rights (a pretty big mistake from a legal standpoint). Delbert is arrested but quickly posts bail thanks to the rural community rallying to his side. No one can believe that Delbert killed Bill. Indeed, Delbert confesses his innocence and states that the only reason he admitted to killing Bill was because he wanted to "get back home."

Receiving multiple nominations at film festivals across the globe in 1992, BROTHER'S KEEPER holds quite the moral quagmire for viewers. Some will view Delbert's confession as solid proof that he did it. Others may feel he was the victim of a legal system that is only interested in prosecuting the least of its citizens. Still others may believe Delbert to be guilty of a mercy killing and be happy at the outcome of the trial.

Regardless of ones legal or moral leanings, this story certainly is gripping in its honesty, showing both sides of the dilemma without flinching.

4 out of 5 stars Interpreter.......2006-05-10

I just purchased this dvd and watched it last night. I also watched Murder on a Sunday Afternoon, a couple pf weeks ago. They are both pretty much the same film. Dont get me wrong this is a really good movie. With one exception, IT REALLY NEEDS SUBTITLES!! I could barely decipher what the Ward Bros. were saying through most of the film. I kept having to rewind and turn the volume up to understand more than half of the dialouge of the entire film. The Ward Bros. were constantly mumbling with a big wad of chew in their mouths. I really should have rented this first, but I bought it for the filmmakers reputations. I own all of their other films and watch them alot. I would recommend renting this first. And if you have a closed caption on your TV I would highly recommend using it.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating .......2006-04-10

My husband and I watched this, and we both give it 5 stars. It's fascinating, sad, and really thought provoking.

5 out of 5 stars no title.......2006-02-15

A documentary about four VERY strange brothers in upstate New York. One died in bed and the other one who shared that bed was accused of his murder. From then on, the film focuses on how the local community rallies around the remaining three, and raises money for the accused brother's defense. The movie never really resolves his innocence, but that is not what is important to the documentary. What is important is showing that rural America supports its own, no matter how bizarre. Delbert Ward, the accused, had such very sad eyes.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Documentary in the Maysles Tradition.......2006-01-09

That this film is dedicated to the memory of David Maysles should tell you all you need to know about what's in store. Along with his brother Albert, David Maysles created some of the most groundbreaking and fascinating documentaries of the 60's and 70's ("Gimme Shelter," "Salesman," "Grey Gardens"), and Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky did a fabulous job here of carrying on the stylistic tradition. The story of the poor and semi-literate Ward brothers is touching and engrossing, despite the squalor in which they lived, and this early 90's legal case is a significant study in cultural assumptions and regional justice. Absorbing, and worth owning.

This 10th anniversary edition packs on a host of extras, but just an FYI: The "Product Detail" here on Amazon that suggests that this 'stars' Connie Chung is wildly inaccurate; she did a piece on the Ward brothers which we see them watching on a TV for a couple of minutes, and that's all. She never physically appears in this film.

1 out of 5 stars propaganda for a continued "religious" war.......2007-03-05

Not what I expected, this film promotes ideas like disregarding childrens' safety to continue spreading lies about a culture that treats women like slaves and property. Also that it is just fine to stab a friend to continue a family's royal birthright at the cost of other people lives. One idea that it correctly portrays is that people who speak English are the only capable of safegarding Arabic history, as seen by the woman in England wo has the priceless text.

4 out of 5 stars A Film Rich in Visual Splendor and in Message.......2006-09-26

Writer/Director Kayvan Mashayekh has created a fine film biography of the 11th century poet/philosopher/mathematician Omar Khayyam and in doing so has presented his viewers with much food for thought. An Iranian immigrant to the US, Mashayekh set out to not only share the rich cultural heritage of his homeland, but he also found a way to make the story even more meaningful: 'The Keeper' refers to the member of Iranian families (or all families for that matter) whose role it is to preserve and share and perpetuate the history of the family, saving ties to the past to assure they never are forgotten. Oral histories these, but in Mashayekh's hands (with writing assists from Belle Avery) this story draws the viewer into an Iranian family's life of diaspora and the deep tug to remain connected its dazzling past. The film is timely to say the least, and the message is one that will benefit the audiences fortunate to see it in understanding a controversial country and its people.

Young Kamran (Adam Echahly) sits beside the bedside of his dying older brother Nader (Puya Behinaein) attentive to the stories about the family's tie to the Persian poet Omar Khayyam. The oral history is parceled out as the older brother dies and when death prevents the conclusion of the history young Kamran sneaks away to England where he encounters an elderly heiress (Vanessa Redgrave) who shares with him the handmade book of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam and directs him to its source. Kamran then travels to Iran to his elderly grandfather (Dariush Iran Nezhad) who rejoices in the fact that Kamran is so committed to the family history and proceeds to share the mysteries of the hallowed ancestor.

This contemporary story serves as a reference point to depict the actual times of Omar Khayyam (Bruno Lastra), revealing the man's childhood with his commitment to learning and to his two close friends Darya (Marie Espinosa) and Hassan (Christopher Simpson). Omar pursues learning and Hassan follows soldiering: they both love Darya but she is sold into slavery. The chain of events is unraveled slowly as we see every step of Omar's education into astronomy, mathematics, philosophy and poetry. He is a Muslim who is a lover of reason and tolerance, a man who keeps his pledges of trust and honor and translates his emotions into poetry that will live far beyond his time. Persia is invaded by the Turks with Sultan Malikshah (Moritz Bleibtreu) and the sultan is wise enough to employ the gifts of Omar for his court. The ruthlessness of the times destroys much of the empire: the Christian Crusaders and the Saracens destroy the inhabitants of Jerusalem and the seeds of struggle that persist to this day are sewn. But above it all is Omar's commitment to reason and to tolerance and his power is felt both at the time of the devastation and even to this day.

The film was shot almost entirely in Uzbekistan and other exotic locations not usually seen by US audiences. The added features on the DVD include a very fine commentary by the director and by an authority on Omar Khayyam who manages to give us a terrific history lesson! There are also production comments that share some of the coincidental beauties and difficulties in shooting this film. The actors are all fine: one wishes for more depth to their characters, which should have been the province of the writers. But the overall effect of this visually stunning film is one of reverence for Iran's past and for the legacy of Omar Khayyam. It is a fine story and an equally fine history lesson. Grady Harp, September 06

5 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing!!!A Must Watch!.......2006-09-10

This is a timely film exploring the relationship between faith and reason, and the current generation (paticuarly the children of immigrant parents) responsability to preserve the stories of the past and the family heritage. This is a heartwarming story that will have you reaching for the kleenex's in certain scenes.

5 out of 5 stars An epic, historic masterpiece.......2006-09-10

I'm at a loss for words to describe the scope, stature and relevance of this film which paints an enlightening portrait of modern conflict by portraying actual events from 1000 years ago. Certainly, this is the most ambitious first feature I've seen from a new director, reminiscent of how my jaw dropped the first time I saw Spielberg's debut "DUEL" air on network television. This is a seminal piece that I strongly recommend.

4 out of 5 stars Impressive Feature Debut.......2006-09-08

Although the acting may seem stilted at times, the film offers a superb example of the power in preservation of ancestral cultures. It's depth and meaning lie beneath the surface, yet there is plenty to enjoy for anyone interested in history, romance, and adventure. However, it's not a film for purist Historians who think that History is something to be enjoyed as it is written in an encyclopedia. Cinematically and story wise it's a true breath of fresh air especially considering the plethora of negative imagery the world sees from the region in the media each day.

This is a film for the pure at heart who love similar stories passed down in their own families...kind of a cross between Whale Rider, Princess Bride, and 1001 Nights. It's rated PG for a reason, so the whole family can enjoy it without being put off with over the top violence or sexual situations.

The DVD Extras provide valuable insight to the creative vision behind the film, which can actually be incredibly useful in a college or high school art/history class. Given that the film was made on location during America's war in Afghanistan and that the massive cast and crew were filming 200 miles from the Afghan border in Uzbekistan, this alone should make it worthwhile viewing!

A look at emotions and autism: Can people with autism feel love and heart-break the same way non-autistic people do? ABC News Nightline correspondent John Donvan profiles Paul DeSavino, a 36-year-old New Jersey man living with autism who says he's in love. But does he really know what it means to be in love and to connect? His mother, Marlene, describes how his condition makes it more difficult for him to connect with others. "He goes off into his own little world and that's the difficult part in having a relationship. It's because he leaves them. He could leave them cold and he can't open himself up. He doesn't know how to do that yet." In part two of John's series, it's not a story about those who have autism but those touched by it. The people linked to autism because their brothers and sisters have it. You'll meet a remarkable young man who's honest about how autism has changed his life but who is filled with so much love and devotion for his brother that it's inspiring.

1 out of 5 stars "a brother is born for adversity".......2003-05-31

Stunningly bad drama that I suggest you do not bother to waste your time with.

Lucinda Pond had overcome an abusive childhood with her single parent father. She became a successful Police officer, and used no small amount of her time protecting her baby brother Ellis from the repercussions of his petty crime, a habit developed from her taking care of him during their childhood.

Lucinda's world came apart when she led a "ruby-ridge" style raid that leads to the death of an innocent man rather than the serial killer she was trying to capture. She leaves the force, takes up drinking, and abandons her husband and child.

Almost four years later some one is copycatting those murders and Lucinda is brought back onto the force against her will to help track down the killer. In no time it all she figures out that it is her wayward Brother, Ellis. She also realizes that this is another of the many games and puzzles that the two siblings shared growing up. He leaves her clues and she is to use their common history to decipher them and hunt him down. Ellis's goal is to "free" her from having to protect him by killing so very many people that Lucinda will be forced to kill him. A plan she does not intend to follow through on.

As the bodies and the clues mount, Lucida is forced into a confrontation with Ellis and a choice that only she can make.

Now, I like movies about siblings who are forced into murderous situations with each other as much as the next person, BUT this movie was just a waste of time.
There was NO suspense. There was no emotional involvement with any of the characters and honestly you could pretty much see exactly where everything was heading from about 15 minutes into the movie.

My only regret is that I didn't have enough sense to turn the VCR off at that moment and just take the tape back. My advice to you is to not even bother to get the tape in the first place.

3 out of 5 stars Blame it on Dad..........2002-12-31

Brother's Keeper is a made for cable TV production for the USA Network. Jeanne Tripplehorn is Lucinda Pond, a former member of the Portland Police, with a number of personal issues. An incident where an innocent man is killed by mistake, causes her leave the force. But she is drawn back to help in an investigation of a series of brutal murders, in which her brother is the prime suspect.

Tripplehorn is believable, as a ragged, close to burned out cop, forced back to reality by the need to bring her brother Ellis (Corin Nemec) to justice. The build up of Ellis, as a criminal mastermind, is a bit overdone, though there is no doubt that he is capable of some extremely gruesome acts. The violence is toned down for TV, and the mayhem is hardly shown, only the grim results. All this carnage, is the result of a troubled childhood, and an abusive father. Very convenient.

Using her insight, Detective Pond is convinced that her brother is "trying to tell her something" with his acts. She must operate with a FBI agent (Evan Dexter Parke) who is not quite convinced she belongs on the investigative team. He becomes her partner for a showdown in the woods with Ellis.

Veteran director, John Badham (Point of No Return) handles matters capably. Brother's Keeper does not have a lot of tension or suspense, and it saves what little action there is until the end. The cost may be a little steep, for a TV type thriller that does not rise very far above average.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent AIDS drama about early 1990's.......2007-05-23

I've been teaching a course on the AIDS Pandemic at Dowling College on Long Island for 10 years. I use this film in the class because it focuses on an incident in the early 1990's that impacted many people in the central Long Island region (where the College is located)--in other words, for us, it's a local story. Beyond that, this is a finely acted, well-scripted family drama that addresses many issues--from discrimination to lack of communication and its effects on a family's emotional, spiritual, and physical health. John Lithgow does his usual excellent job portraying twin brothers, and Ellen Burstyn's performance as the twin's mother is also riveting. This is an excellent introduction to the pre-drug cocktail era of AIDS, when AZT was about the best hope there was. But what could be bleak turns into a wonderful story of human courage and proves, once again, that you don't need a scatillion dollars of special effects to make a touching film.

After his father's sudden death from prostate cancer, Darius gets a life-altering surprise before his father's funeral: He has a half-brother named Dallas, that is the same age as he is. It seems that before his death, Darius' father wrote to Dallas, his illegitimate son and informed him of his sickness. Confused and worried, Dallas shows up in Florida to find that his father has already passed away. He must now cope with his feelings for a father he never really knew and a brother he's not sure he even wants. For the bitter Darius, the feeling is mutual.
