Serving as an introduction for neophytes and a refresher course for experts, The History of Rock and Roll is a mammoth and, when considered on its own terms, frequently successful undertaking. The series, which was first presented in 1995, consumes some 578 minutes, with 10 episodes (there are no bonus features) spread out over five discs. Its pedigree (executive producers include Quincy Jones, while respected writers Peter Guralnick and Greil Marcus are listed as consultants) is impressive, as is its scope, beginning in the pre-rock days of bluesman Muddy Waters and boogie woogie master Louis Jordan and continuing through the death of Kurt Cobain and the birth of the Lollapalooza festival in the mid-1990s. Along the way, dozens of big-name performers (with the notable exception of the Beatles) are on hand to lead us through the story.
On the minus side, the format--clips of musical performances cut short by a parade of talking heads--while typical of the genre, will frustrate those who come for the music alone. Nor is it likely that anyone who studies such things will find much here that hasn't already been seen. To be sure, there are some terrific moments, like the profile of Bob Dylan (in part 5, "Plugging In"), some cool clips of relatively obscure legends like James Burton and T-Bone Walker (in part 7, "Guitar Heroes"), and rarely seen live bits with Jimi Hendrix, Steely Dan, Iggy Pop (goofing on the Dinah Shore Show in '77), and many others scattered throughout the set. Part 8, which chronicles the '70s, is surprisingly compelling (one forgets how many major artists--Bruce Springsteen, Bob Marley, Stevie Wonder--came into their own in a decade remembered largely for disco and faceless arena rock), while part 9, "Punk," is arguably the most entertaining of the lot.
In the end, it's the lack of complete musical performances that is the set's Achilles' heel. Then again, with their appetites whetted here, perhaps viewers will move on to other, more detailed looks at their heroes--beginning with, say, The Beatles Anthology. --Sam Graham

Too many interrupted performances .......2007-07-06
I was disappointed to see most performances interrupted by comments from contemporaries of the singer or the singer him(her)self. There was no flow to the performances. Why wasn't the complete performance (song) offered as a DVD extra?

Just Right for the Generations Who Missed It!.......2007-04-18
This is a well-paced documentary, appropriately held in the secure embrace and commentary of Quincy Jones who has proven to have the deepest and widest influence on nearly all popular music.
Interviews by key witnesses from the story and event of Rock and Roll add legitimation to the international story that it has become. History at its best, may not so much be performance as it is a passionate retelling and revisiting the story in the hearts and souls of the brothers and sisters who poured their lives into the state of the art of Rock and Roll (including good coverage of Soul and R&B in all of its various expressions).
You get to taste the sights and sounds of the experience, thanks to some choice footage and video, but you get to hear how the pioneers of Rock and Roll impacted the artists that inherited it.
While the material is dated, it gives the essential information right up to the post alternative and pre American Idol age in which we find ourselves now.
Not every artist can be included and at times less significant ones are, but the the mainstream of the story remains in-tact.
For those who are willing to listen to the story and get a substantial take on how the art of Rock and Roll that has touched so many lives, this series will likely be the defining DVD overview of Rock and Roll History until something better comes along.
Great set for classroom use.......2007-01-11
I teach music appreciation and music history at a university. I used this set as research material in preparing my lectures for a class unit and a seminar on Rock and Roll, and have been using brief excerpts for classroom examples for 10 years. I finally had to upgrade from the VHS version when one of the tapes broke from overuse! The commentary from artists looking back on their own history is excellent. I especially like David Bowie, looking like he just left a photo session for GQ, commenting on a clip of himself as Ziggy Stardust. Gene Simmons of Kiss (out of makeup) commenting on his problems with hairspray is also wonderful, as is Alice Cooper (also out of makeup) talking about the notorious chicken event. While someone looking for extended performances will be disappointed, the short clips with extended commentary by people who experienced the events are perfect for classroom use. Every semester I get a couple of students who want to know where they can get a copy, and one of my graduate students in the seminar was so impressed he chose a series of lesson plans based on the set as a final project!
The History of Rock and Roll.......2007-01-04
A great compendium intertwining music and culture. I use this in the classroom and my students love the anecdotes and the music. My high school students see how their personal music tastes fit into the historical development of the medium they love so much. A wonderful addition to any collection.
Just not as in depth as expected, a let down.......2006-08-31
I just finished this series today, and I just don't feel I walked away with any new knowledge than when I started watching the series. It has many stars scattered throughout the film, but none really said anything that was groundbreaking. Big theme, rock is here to stay. Yeah, I got that after tape two. The first 4 episodes in the series (rock & roll explodes, Good rockin' tonight, Britian invades america/america fights back, and Plugging in) did a fair job at looking at the roots of rock. But I got a sense in part two that this was going to get somewhat repetitive. I think it concentrated to much on these basic roots in the first two, and missed many opportunities to highlight the groups and music. The british invasions really again seemed to just highlight groups, but never had much depth in the scenes or development. Episode 5, Sounds of soul, Just don't know why this was in the set. Yes, its was an important development along with Rock, but really a seperate genre. This episode could have been chance to expande on the Beatles, stones, and their development, as well as the who, and Pink Floyd. Yes, they briefly had david Gillmoure in Episode 6, but that was about it. Episode 6 (My generation) was to short, and very superficial, just not much said. Again, the 5th episode could have bridged the gap between episode 3-4 and 6. Episode 7, guitar heros, Just a dissapointment. I don't think it covered much at all. It concentrates on the fact people used electric guitars, rehasing the rise of Hendrix. But it really missed the boat to expand itself as an episode showing how these first bands gave rise to Metal, and the 80's rock and punk. Real dissapointment to not see a tape following this one going into the genre of Hard rock/metal. The have a nice 70's episode 8, again, just vauge. I thought it would have concentrated on the many different branches of rock that came out of the era. It did a fair job at showin how the industry changed, and marketing took off. Episode 9, Punk, Not bad. did a fair job at covering the scene. Episode 10, up from the underground....When did Rap become rock and roll, this tape concentrated over half of it to the rap scene. It did cover MTV, and eventually got to "alternative rock" and briefly mentioned grundge and nirvana, but completly skipped over Hair metal and Hard rock.
In all, I think this series had set high goals, but just missed its chance. they needed naration, more history, more development of the scenes of rock. They over did the roots of rock, then continued to drag in many genres that really are more R & B, and rap, and missed the boat on 80's rock (hair, metal), and not even getting much of the pop scene, or even new wave (new order, Duran duran etc) I guess I must have seen the other "rock and Roll" series that was on pbs by "the experience project" that someone else mentioned in a review (which had a limited release availability I guess). I guess this will spark me to try and see some other series, like the new one on VH1 Heavy, the story of metal, as well as look at the classics like the decline of western civilization I & II. worth a viewing if a friend has this set, but not really worth the buy.

This 1987 documentary is distinguished by both its smart narrative premise and wonderful performance footage of Elvis Presley at the dawn of his remarkable career. With the King's melodramatic life already a familiar subject for film and print biographies, producer-directors Alan and Susan Raymond instead shaped this hour-long profile around the year that saw the charismatic Memphis singer's eruption as a pop sensation. By taking that selective path, and focusing tightly on Presley's crucial transition to a major record deal, national media exposure, and the first decisive steps in his subsequent movie career, Elvis '56 achieves a unique cohesion while legitimately celebrating a remarkable period of growth.
With the Band's Levon Helm narrating in his salty Arkansas drawl, the story effectively conveys Elvis's Southern perspective, while evocative use of Alfred Wertheimer's celebrated black-and-white still portraits sustains a visual style carrying over to the program's real high points: early stage and television appearances by Presley and his original trio, later augmented into a quartet. Among the highlights are historic slots on Milton Berle's and Steve Allen's variety shows: we see the joyous physicality that made the Berle performance a topic of outrage (and, of course, a swoon-worthy moment for female fans), as well as Allen's glib solution to censors' worries, forcing a static, tail-coated Presley to sing "Hound Dog" to a basset hound. --Sam Sutherland

Customer Reviews:
Takes me back!.......2007-07-02
The first time I heard Elvis they were playing his hit song over the pa system at the PX in Turkey and I was probably [...] I think it was Hound Dog...I didn't get to hear him again until the following year when Love Me Tender came to the Base Theater in Athens, Greece, and then he went into the Army and I became a teenager...and the rest is history! I was too busy putting myself through college and life after high school, so I missed out on those years too! Now I'm 62, retired, and reliving my youth!
This filled me in on his earlier hits and his beginnings. I never saw him on TV as we didn't have that overseas at the time. I really love this DVD; well done!
An excellent way to learn about Elvis.......2006-12-03
The first record I ever bought was the 78-rpm version of 'Heartbreak Hotel', so 1956 is a special year for me. This documentary does a great job of bringing back the feeling of what it was like in this early era of Rock 'N' Roll. This really shows Elvis at his peak. I would highly reccomend it.
Old Fart.......2006-08-22
I remember watching E on a B&W telly in a drug store while 10 of
us shared a coke as a reason for being there. Who had a name
like "ELVIS" in 1955. Nobody I know and certainly not in Canada.
I watched the Dorsey Brothers Show and E and the hair on the back of my neck stood up. The number 1 song on the "Hit Parade" was
Doris Day, "How Much is that Doggie In the Window"
As John Lennon says during the intro to ELVIS'56- "before
Elvis, there was nothing"
Old fans will love this DVD. New fans will appreciate the changes.
Old and new will get to know the world shaking change E made.
One of the very best E early years docu/dvds
Interesting early Elvis.......2005-07-10
I had never seen any early Elvis before. It was a treat!! Quality is not the greatest, but then it's old technology. Certainly worth the price if you want to "know" who Elvis is/was.
Elvis Presley's Early Years - A Terrific Video.......2005-02-17
This video of Presley's early career is wonderful. It may be the best of all the Presley videos. Don't miss it. You will be there for the early music and the meteoric rise of this rock n roll legend. The quality of the reproduction is excellent for the time period 1956. On this video you will see Elvis Presley at his best before he was spoiled by all the fame and money that came later in his life.

Description
1965 was a pivotal year in Bob Dylan's career. In the early part of the year he released "Bringing It All Back Home", the first album that saw him move distinctly away from his folk music origins. In the summer he followed it with "Highway 61 Revisited", an out and out rock `n' roll album, and the single "Like A Rolling Stone" hit No.2 on the US charts. His appearance at that year's Newport Folk Festival saw him use an electric guitar on stage, a hugely controversial move at the time that saw him booed by much of the audience. Against this background, Dylan went into the studios of TV station KQED in San Francisco for a broadcast press conference hosted by Ralph J. Gleason, his only one from this era ever to be filmed.

Caught on Camera.......2007-05-30
This DVD has extraordinary clear images--and I played the DVD on a $50 Walmart TV and a $30 Magnavox DVD player in a room where NBC comes in poorly no matter what TV I use or move around in there.
This legendary press conference is a must buy-- a real keeper. This is good for those trying to catch up with the 60's as well as young people learning about this living legend. I really give it 7 points out of 5. This DVD gives a glimse of the person, Bob Dylan, at the peak of his 60's career, his youth, and of course a glimpse into the roaring 60's.
I was truly mesmerized and fascinated in watching this press conference.
As soon as Bob Dylan walks in and sits down, he quickly steals the show. Throughout the conference, he is alert, relaxed, unasuming, expressive, and playful (in a nice way). He quickly answers questions sometimes with deep insights uncommon for his young age. He demonstrates intelligence beyond his years, charm, poise, style and humor. He is the Star of the show, without any doubt. He never raises his voice in irritation or defensiveness even to the most stinging questions. At one time an ash escapes his lit cigarette and Dylan playfully searches for it on his lap and about, and a reporter apparently irritated at his cute antics tries to gain control of the show by shooting a stinging question at Dylan to which he quickly responds with great poise and dignity without any trace of irritation which immediately puts him back in control of the show. It is fascinating to watch! (in another DVD Dylan (in a more informal setting) has a more passionate exchange with a reporter, but that was okay. In this case the setting was more formal and Dylan mastered it to perfection.
He fidgets a tiny bit and smokes a lot, but surprisingly, this only adds to his charm rather than the opposite. (smoking is 100% wrong today--these were different times).
There are gorgeous close-ups with amazing detail. He was truly very good looking with gorgeous eyes. I never realized how stunning he really was at that age until now! GEE Wiz! I was only a teenager until the end of the 60s and the first record I ever bought of Bob Dylan was Lay Lady Lay (don't kill me "since '64 fans") (I now have lots and lots more records from him and trying to catch up with all that was going on back then). So kids, if you see him today aged beyond his years, remember he was once young, with extraordinary talent enough to outshine millions of people.
Nadia
a must see for dylan fans.......2007-04-26
a hilarious tour-de-force by bobby of one of his legendary press conferences from the 60s: the only one caught in its entirety on film. the mind boggles at some of the simplistic queries posed, not to mention the contempt in which reporters frequently held dylan. of course, he matches them in the contempt level and verbally outspars all comers, while attempting to frequently turn the conversation to a serious discussion of his music -- before another stupid question sets off another riff on the absurd. this is for bob dylan fans only, but for them it is a huge treat.
Dylan is Brilliant!!!.......2007-02-12
The quality of this film is great, the other clips from it, that I have seen in the past were always grainy and just overall poor. This one however is magnificent. Bob is so sure of himself, as he should be, and he is just totally screwing with the morons that are asking the questions! It's wonderful to see Bob in action!
More info on the SF Press Conference..........2007-01-07
...can be found by googling 'Dylan Press Conference'. Look for the Dylan Pool link. There you can access the pictoral article entitled 'A Closer Look'.
This DVD is a must have for any serious Dylan fan.
Vintage Dylan interview.......2006-12-11
I first viewed this interview long ago from a VHS that was a copy of a copy of a copy...well, long-time Dylan fans know how poorly this material was presented. But long ago, we fans accepted sub-par production because we knew that Dylan's material would always be superior. Whatever the defects of the medium, Dylan would always be entertaining.
But no longer do we need to witness Dylan through faded and distorted images. This DVD offers the viewer crystal clear clarity, sharp black and white images - nothing at all to detract from the interview. Dylan ambles into this den of reporters, plops in his chair, fishes out the first of many cigarettes, and performs his own brand of magic. He listens, sometimes laughing at the absurdity of some questions, but usually answers plainly - follow-up questions usually are treated to his absurdist humor. More thoughtful questions are treated to more expansive answers by Dylan, and he seems to take pains to explain himself.
However, the real show is when some reporters try to frustrate or anger him. He is soft-spoken but never backs away from a challenge. He is at once witty, reflective, absurd, and always hilarious when he responds.
This interview was a long time arriving in DVD format, but well worth the wait. We see a young man who is confident of his abilities, yet always insisting that his role is a musician and songwriter, not a spokesperson for any group or cause. As he continues to tour at the age when other musicians are performing greatest hits, Dylan continues to create music that inspires. This DVD captures a moment from Dylan's back pages where we can see him answer questions unscripted and on the fly - this performance certainly captures his wit, insight, and thoughtfulness. It may very well rank as a fine performance from this "song and dance man."

Any fan of Richard Lester's A Hard Day's Night won't want to miss the documentary The Beatles: The First U.S. Visit by Albert and David Maysles. The Maysles brothers were given extraordinary access to the Beatles during their first trip to the U.S., in February 1964, for several concerts and their seminal first appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show. Like Hard Day's Night, which came out later that year, this film (also known as What's Happening! The Beatles in the U.S.A.) shows lots of spontaneous cheekiness with the press and fans; the Beatles' wide-eyed bemusement at the hysteria they caused; as much cutting up as a tiny hotel room allows; and even specific scenes--goofing off on a commuter train, mod dancing in a nightclub--that would later appear in Lester's film. The only thing missing is Paul's grandfather.
The performance segments alone are a must for fans. The three Ed Sullivan appearances show a great cross section of their hits at the time, including "All My Loving," "I Saw Her Standing There," a beautifully delivered "This Boy" by John Lennon, and a wobbly "I Saw Her Standing There" so out of tune George Harrison nearly cracks up as he listens to Lennon and Paul McCartney struggle for harmony. The blurry, badly mic'd footage of the concert at the Washington Coliseum shows the Beatles acting as their own roadies, setting up their instruments; the platform Ringo Starr drums on lurches ominously with each downbeat. It was a more innocent, exuberant time, to be sure, and this sweet documentary lets the Beatles phenomenon speak for itself. --Anne Hurley
Customer Reviews:
You Need this Dvd !.......2007-05-21
This is the original film documentry by the Maysles brothers, of the Beatles' first American visit. When the boys came to our shores in February 1964, the Maysles were commisioned to follow them around with cameras, detailing their every move during the entire brief tour. The result is now on dvd, fully remastered and really fun fun fun to watch.
A visual diary of Beatlemania unfolding for the first time, in America, the cameras follow them from the minute they descend the steps of the aircraft until they ascend again. In keeping with the cinema verite' style, there is no narration, only diologue, and events captured as they unfold. The camera captures the fan hysteria at the airport, in front of the Plaza Hotel, and of course in the Ed Sullivan studio, during the live taping of their historic appearances. It even eavesdrops on Murray the K as he counts down on his WINS radio show, the minutes to their arrival. But of course, 99% of this film is the Beatles themselves, just being themselves. (Or as natural as you can be if you have a camera in your face all the time.) You see them in the car going to the hotel, in the hotel , in Central Park, at the Peppermint Lounge,... everywhere, including their excursion to Miami Beach.
It's fun to note their excitement as they witness their impact on America, and realize that they are the first British act to actually win the hearts of this big, intimidating country. Their excitement is obvious and unrehearsed, especially Paul's. When I first watched this dvd, I hadn't seen The Beatles for a long time, and I was so overjoyed to see and hear them again. I had forgotten how young they were. I was also surprised that Paul comes across as the most natural, and the one who wears his heart on his sleeve (so to speak) more than the others. He can barely contain his excitement, and happiness in this film, and he doesn't bother trying. I was really surprised by how funny he is. In almost every scene, he is doing a funny accent or impersonation of someone, and he's really good. People seem to associate John with this sort of humor, but Paul was just as funny. John on the other hand, plays the cool man, putting a check on his excitement. In the car going to the hotel, John and Ringo look on with affectionate amusement as Paul, barely able to contain himself, practically bounces out of his seat, waving a transister radio around. George and Ringo are seen doing some slapstick on the train going to Washington D.C. but it isn't as funny as the droll one liners that both of them became known for as time went on. And in this particular film, they are not as fun to watch as dear Paul...and ultra cool John. The extras offered with this treasure of a dvd are also worth it. They contain out takes from the original film which include more clowning around, more McCartney craziness, ( in one scene with Murray the K, and later by the Plaza elevator, Paul almost seems, dare I say it,...high.) They had just left the Peppermint Lounge so who knows? Also of interest, are interviews on the street with snobby music students as they pontificate about the Beatles. If you're over a certain age (or you've seen the movie, Animal House), you know the type. Those early 60's folky type girls, with long hair, very well spoken, intellectual, and talking about how they don't normally listen to pop music, only folk and classical. Yeah yeah yeah. Anyway this is a very important addition to the Beatlephile library and I cherish it for it's historical and entertainment value. You will too.

Awesomely nostalgic. Lots of stuff that you most likely haven't seen before. Definitely recommended for anyone who lived the experience "back in the day"
The Beatles - The First U.S. Visit.......2007-02-10
This was great! We all loved it! If you are a Beatle fan, it is a must.
A Must See For Even The Casual Beatles Fan.......2006-09-18
The Beatles' First U.S. Visit is, behind "The Compleat Beatles" and their self-produced "Anthology", the most entertaining and revealing about this musical group of four doing what they were born to do, on the way to the crest of their musical creativity. The performances on the American "Ed Sullivan Show" are entertaining for fans and interesting as historical documents, but the true gems are the sequences of non-performance documentary footage of all four members of the group, Brian Epstein, and (briefly, hush-hush ;)) Cynthia Lennon. This footage provides a window into The Beatles' emotional state during this life-altering point in their career. They balance organized professionalism (largely achieved by Brian Epstein, often under-appreciated in that he was managing a musical act achieving unprecedented popularity with no precedented business or professional model) with their excitement of their success in America. Then and now, largely the Holy Grail of success in entertainment. Paul, as would seem to be his role in their entire career together, acts as a conduit between George, John, Ringo and their handlers, like encouraging Ringo to pack his suitcase thouroughly in a "mother hen" voice. Watching them listen to themselves on the radio in America, seeing footage of car-mobbing people from the INSIDE of their car, seeing John tease instrumental DJ Murray The K (none the wiser) with pervy English slang, and The "Ed Sullivan" performances themselves is priceless. Though by February 1964 they were well versed in Hotel Room culture, their upbeat moods reveal their happiness (and reported surprise) at their reception from the moment they stepped off the trans-Atlantic airplane. Seeing this week of pivotal events in rock n' roll history from is a wonderful peek behind the Beatles' curtain on par with their "Anthology" and not to be missed by any casual or greater fan. Probably, if purchased, one of the Beatles-related home media films you will find yourself repeat watching more than others. Well shot by the Maysles brothers, directed and edited. Highly recommended.
Really great stuff.......2006-03-22
This is a great documentary that a fan can watch over and over again. Although my favourite Beatles' era is their middle period (RS through MMT), followed by their late period (1968 to the end), there's a charm and sweetness to their early years as well, even though their songs were more lightweight and poppish. They also looked so alike in this period, and it's charming to see how naturally they conducted themselves in front of the camera, just four innocent boys who had recently made it big and were having a great time on their first visit to America (although George had already been on his own in 1963 to visit his sister). Nothing was faked or staged, and nothing is boring either. The wit and charm was just so natural. The documentary of outtakes is also very good, and serves to give a fuller picture of what went on during the filming.
However, as others have said, this documentary contains footage of their performances on 'The Ed Sullivan Show' and at the Washington Coliseum, footage which is already available on other DVDs (although since I'm not one to nitpick over minor technical details in lieu of the big picture, I won't go into which has better audio or visual quality). It seems as though they could have put in the unused scene they shot when they went into the nearest apartment to watch the show with a family, instead of putting in footage already available elsewhere. I also found the audio commentary to be rather lacking. There were way too many long pauses and not nearly enough comments or observations. How hard could it have been to fill up the nearly 90 minutes with practically nonstop comments and observations, particularly when we're dealing with The Beatles?

Good but not as good as everyone raves here........2007-04-24
Having purchased nearly everything Beatle related out there, I can tell you that this is a good DVD, but not great. Let me put it to you this way, if you have the Anthology DVD set, think of this as the bonus features for it. Many of the same interviews are duplicated in this DVD from the Anthology but most are extended so you get to see more of the interview that the Anthology cut away from.
If you're a Beatles nut, this is excellent. If you're a casual Beatles fan, this is not for you, the Anthology is. As for the interviews on this DVD, be aware there aren't that many. It's not like the an hour of back-to-back interview/news footage. In fact, most of the DVD is just file footage as a narrator talks to take up some time and space.
I give this DVD 4 stars. It's more like 3 1/2. If you're a Beatles enthusiast, I would try to rent it first because I don't really believe you'll want to watch this over and over again.
Love It! Very Interesting!.......2007-04-03
This DVD is wonderful.Filled with footage of interviews, press conferences, etc. Some of them pretty rare. Some are included in Anthology but they were edited down. Here they are shown more complete ,maybe even in thier entirety. The video is excellent.Great preservation job.The only disappoinment is,and others have said this, that there is no Beatles music or concert footage.Guess they had problems with getting permission.Instead you hear this generic,psuedo-rock,muzak throughout. The footage makes up for that however. An interesting addition is the Feb.1964 Heathrow Airport press conference when the boys returned from America.Unlike Anthology, here is shown a much longer, uncut version. Not very good for Paul because he seems to either fart or burp(you can't tell which)while answering a question.Very surprising and funny. The best part that stands out in my mind,is a very long expose' on the Jesus controversy.A British reporter is seen in America interviewing southern, teenagers in a record store. One can't decide whether she likes the group anymore because she's just so hurt by what they said, and another can't wait to start burning all of his Beatle records.Strange and riveting stuff. He goes on to interview the record shop owner then the DJ who started the controversy.During the interview the DJ says three times that he doesn't know if "they" (The Beatles)are black or white. So I guess in addition to being an incredibly cranky, creep of a stuffed shirt,he is also... NEAR SIGHTED.The British reporter finishes his expose' with a lengthy interview in what looks like a bathroom of all places, with the Beatles.John and Paul dominate with their views. It's interesting to note the change in the boys from 1964 to 1966.The biggest change is in Paul.In 1964 he is very much a young boy excited by fame, giddy almost, and charmingly unsophisticated.By 1966,he has turned into a serious, somewhat jaded, seasoned celebrity.Actually they all undergo this change but it's very obvious in Paul. This video actually covers their entire career from 1963 to 1970 with a voice over telling the story.Having been a fan for 37 years,I mentally blocked out the voice over but even if you know nothing about the fabs, you probably don't need it.You should just read the Anthology and buy the accompanying DVD boxed set and you're good to go.Then buy this DVD.
Undeniably great footage.......2007-01-06
I purchased this DVD basely solely on the positive reviews posted here. Along with the others, I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the footage shown, much of it highly unusual. There were several undeniably rare clips, especially of Ringo in 1964 and 1965. Even long-time Beatle collectors will find new material and be over the moon about it.
However, it must be pointed out that in one hour of footage, the actual rare clips only total about 10 minutes. Much of the DVD is taken up with repeticious audience shots, screaming girls, KKK protesters and various other people not connected to the Beatles. There is no footage of the Beatles performing, merely interviews. But those 10 minutes will knock your socks off, especially the 1966 interview where John and Paul address the verboten subject of the Vietnam war while George and Ringo sit in the background, happily stoned out of their minds.
The "bonus features" are also weak. They consist merely of the identical interviews which were shown in the feature film. It's really superfluous and unnecessary. The interviews also stop suddenly in late 1966, with the exception of a brief clip of John and Yoko at their bed in, and of Paul and Linda after their wedding ceremony. That interview is extremely rare!
For anyone who is looking for the unusual in Beatles material, this will please you immensely. There are some weaknesses, but they're a minimal distraction. This is a must have for Beatle fanatics.
Crikey...it's GOOD!.......2006-08-12
Of all the low-budget "unauthorized" DVD's on the Beatles cluttering the market only this and "Fun With The Fab Four" are worth picking up. The producers of this DVD did a very smart thing by assembling as much BBC and newsreel footage of the Beatles as they could and presenting it chronologically as a kind of diary of events. Taken in this context, the viewer actually gets a feel for the hectic schedule the Beatles had to maintain and the accompanying footage really does tell a fascinating story. I've seen most of this footage a zillion times over in various documentaries (even the Beatles' own "Anthology) but the presentation here is first rate and makes for compelling viewing no matter how many times you've seen the clips. I should add that there is footage I've never seen anywhere else on this DVD and you'll be as pleasantly surprised even if you're a big Beatles fan. The extras include a full uncut 1966 BBC documentary on the "bigger than Jesus" controversy which is worth the price of this DVD alone.
A Pleasant Surprise.......2006-06-04
This DVD is one of those little, unknown, "Beatle-Surprises" that pop up once in a blue moon (with the upcoming CirqueduSoliel Soundtrack coming up as the "next-big-thing")... I consider myself to be quite the Beatles' completionist and I had never seen the majority of these interviews in their entirety and much less in such pristine quality... As stated by other reviewer; A must-have! ... Worth the price of admission alone is the lengthy Bonus-Feature with everything and more concerning "We're More Popular than Jesus" remark... Watching those teenagers be interviewed in a record shop was a major nostalgia trip (to see those walls adorned with the "latest releases" like in the olden days!)... Get this one!

What better way to cap off 2003, the "Year of the Blues," than with this eminently watchable documentary about Chester A. Burnett, better known as Howlin' Wolf? Arguably second only to Muddy Waters among the Mississippi Delta singers who traveled north and pioneered urban electric blues (their supposed rivalry is the subject of one of this DVD's bonus features), Wolf was a big, imposing man with an inimitable, booming voice and a lasting influence on generations of rock & rollers--all of which comes across in the 90-minute film. Not only do we get a history of his life (told by family members, musical associates like longtime guitarist Hubert Sumlin, and Wolf himself) that's far more entertaining than the norm for this genre, we also get some history of the blues in general. And not only do we hear snippets of Wolf's music, we hear several complete songs, including some priceless filmed performances. Quite simply, this one should become a touchstone for documentaries of its kind. --Sam Graham

Great archival footage and information.......2007-04-14
One of the finest bluesmen in history, the real father of rock and roll, is brilliantly captured on this DVD. Excellent choice for anyone interested in this amazing man.

Essential part of Blues history! A simply must have!
pleased as punch.......2007-03-09
I thoroughly enjoyed the DVD. It told the story of his life, with great music, and included his family and friends. It made him come to life for me, and was informative of his life and relationships with those close to him.
Review of the Howlin' Wolf Story.......2007-02-20
I was generqally pleased with the music on this DVD. However, it did not meet my objective to obtain video footage of the Howlin' Wolf performing before a live audience. The recordings of him sitting in a chair in an empty room was not what I was searching for.
Fantastic!! Blues at it's best........2007-01-05
As I stated in my review of the "Blues Masters," this DVD and the Blues Masters are second only to the DVD "The Blues." Anyone who loves the blues should have this DVD in his/her collection.

Patrk71.......2006-11-10
We enjoy listiening and watching this DVD on our HDTV. We play this when have friends over with the volume low and find them humming or singing along.
Depressing.......2006-11-10
Seeing what's become of the rock and roll legends I remember from when we were much younger, I found very depressing. I'd rather remember them the way they were 40 yrs ago. Even Jerry Lee looked like he was ready for the nursing home.
Enjoyable but . . . .......2006-01-30
This was an enjoyable DVD, but I was a little disappointed by the song selection of some of the acts. For example, I would have liked to see Leslie Gore sing "It's My Party" or one of her more known songs. It also would have been good to have her sing more than one song. The intro of the acts could also have used more build-up and background. I have the Time-Life DooWop DVD's and Jerry Butler does a great job of that. I was also expecting to hear Gary Puckett sing, but he only appeared briefly as a host. Not exacly what I expected when I ordered this video.

1975-1981:ROLLINGTHUNDER & THE GOSPEL YEARS (DYLAN,BOB)
Customer Reviews:
an amateur load of..........2007-06-01
I'm a huge Dylan fan and interested in all the different phases he has experimented with, but this DVD is poorly made, boring and filled with distracting cornball effects and edits. What's worse: NO DYLAN PERFORMANCES IN THE FILM!! This DVD should be titled "Some People Who Knew Dylan in the 70's: Dylan Impersonator Asks Mundane Questions!" What a huge bore, and the stinkiest thing I've ever bought on Amazon.
Spend 240 minutes listening to Dylan's cds instead!.......2007-05-19
I'm one of the biggest Dylan fans out there but this film is pretty poorly made. How anyone can sit through this entire dvd is beyond me. Cheesy effects galore! The same Rolling Thunder Review footage shown OVER AND OVER again! The WORST photos of Dylan in existence! Why is Rob Stoner wearing those STUPID sunglasses for his entire interview? He's INSIDE! Will someone PLEASE hand Hurricane Carter a towel so he can wipe the sweat from his brow? I've seen school plays that were more entertaining.
If you do decide to give it a go do yourself a favor and see if your library has it instead of throwing your money away. Then skim through the dvd to the semi-interesting parts...you'll be done in a half hour tops.
Why does Joel have to be so silly?.......2006-08-02
This documentary is mostly fascinating, yet is peppered with moments of silliness. For the die-hardenest of Dylan fans, especially his mid-70's transformation(s), you will absolutely love how the director/interviewer (and "star") delves deep into this interesting yet elusive period by asking all the questions that fans like myself have always wanted to ask. Fortunately, he is able to interview a few key former Dylan associates, asking very interesting questions.
It's not a hugely star-studded list of interviewees that most everyday music fans would recognize, but to the Dylan devotees, Joel Gilbert (the filmmaker) couldn't have asked for anyone better, especially the heart-and-soul of the Rolling Thunder Revue, Rob Stoner and Scarlet Rivera. They both were incredibly forthright and insightful and revealed much about the behind-the-scenes goings-on during the infamous Rolling Thunder Revue. Stoner especially was very articulate and generous with his recollection of those whirlwind events.
Hurricane Carter is very engrossing and a just a wonderful interview, and many others are also wonderful interview subjects. Myself, I was always a closet fan of the "Hard Rain" album, even with the sub-par recording quality. I played that album just as much as any other. The passion and intensity Dylan was exuding during that tour was spine-tingling (just listen to that version of "Idiot Wind"). If I had the money or the resources, I also would have made a film like this. So, hats off to Joel for pulling it off and beating me to it!
However, as much as I loved the purpose of Joel's documentary, I had a hard time sitting through all the terribly distracting "clip art" images intertwined with the captivating interviews. I wish he would issue a "Director's Cut" or something where all of that garbage is edited out, like the cartoons of the rubber duckies and Christ and crucifixes, and just about every other silly image that he uses. It takes away from, and almost makes fun of, what I feel is a very serious subject. Dylan wasn't writing songs about partying or sex, or acting stupid, he was a serious artist during this period, and sang about turning his life over to Christ, the deep darkness of love lost, the struggle of the falsely imprisoned, or gunned-down gangsters seen as modern folk heroes. This is all deep subject matter, and doesn't deserve to sliced up with silly amateurish clip-art images. A good 30-45 minutes in total is devoted to these distractions, and displayed during intriguing interview segments. I would pay fifty bucks for a version that omits all this silliness and keeps the cameras rolling on the interview subjects instead. Again, more importantly, this is only my opinion, and I would still strongly encourage Dylan fans to buy this DVD. To all you casual Dylan fans, I would stay away from it.
Passion Behind the Art.......2006-08-01
This is a long piece, but it really captures the essence of Bob Dylan's journey as an artist through this period of his life. If you ever wondered what made the man tick, or write that bit of poetry, watching this documentary will answer all those questions. There is a spirit in which art is made and genius seems to be able to harness it so very well. After watching this DVD, I have such tremendous respect for Bob Dylan as an artist because it was evident that his passion and conviction are at the core of his work. He was unafraid to stand up and bear the burdens of those treated unjustly.
My husband and I attended the Vineyard during this time period and we can attest that there were quite a few famous people who passed through. Our pastors were young men sold out to Jesus and were very integrous and sensitive to the spiritual hunger and growth of these people. At no time was their name exploited or their privacy not upheld. The focus was Jesus. While no one of us was perfect, we were all sincere seekers of God. I'm sure that Mr. Dylan was no different.
A friend at the Valley Vineyard Church turned us on to this DVD. He stumbled onto it quite by accident because he was interested in the life of Bob Dylan. To his surprise, his own pastor was in the film. Our Pastor Bill has never ever mentioned that he even participated in the making of this documentary. While there are those who might capitalize on a celebrity in the name of Christ, he chooses to capitalize solely on the name of Christ. Bob Dylan was just another soul drifting through on his way to heaven. Kenn Gulliksen and Bill Dwyer were used as instruments of the Lord to help him find the way.
If you want more and more Dylan,,,,,,.......2006-07-02
This disc covers a period that's somehow missed much attention.
There's excellent, in depth interviews, with people who all contributed to the music created, and tons of background information rarely mentioned before.
To be honest, I can't seem to get enough. For the most part, I've actually stopped buying new releases by new artists, and the only things I jump to buy are the Dylan tribute CD's which seem to come out weekly. When the songs are great, AND THEY ARE, the Dylan tribute CD's are way more interesting then whatever else is being promoted and sold.
And now we have this DVD, which, is for FANS who want more, and will get it, and appreciate it. Anybody who's met the Man, and is willing to say anything at all about him, I'm there, and all ears, because I think Bob is a true master/everyman, and I will never say "enough already",,,,,(I hope you can follow what I'm saying here, because, now that I'm reading it, I'm not sure I do.)
anyway,
if it's about Bob, I want to see and hear it,,,,,,
This is well worth the $13-14,,,,,,

Product Description
Ed Sullivan's show was straight out of old vaudeville; brief acts of every description, from slapstick comedy to operatic arias. At least once, he showed a film, the only known film of Anna Pavlova (doing her Swan Dance). The Muppets first TV appearance was on Ed Sullivan. Stiff and expressionless, with a peculiar voice and a talent for mispronunciation, Sullivan was at least as recognizable as Cronkite to early 60s viewers. Narrated by Michelle Phillips of The Mamas & The Papas 1. The Jackson 5- I Want You Back 2. Bill Hayley & His Comets - Rock Around The Clock 3. Elvis Presley - Don't Be Cruel 4. Ray Charles - What'd I Say 5. Jackie Wilson - Lonely Teardrops 6. The Beatles - I Saw Her Standing There 7. James Brown - Please, Please, Please 8. Roy Orbison - Oh, Pretty Woman 9. Customer Reviews:
Good performances, but not enough.......2005-01-06
I loved the performances on the DVD: the Doors, Bill Haley, and early Elvis, Ray Charles, James Brown, and Janis Joplin, but I was a little disappointed that it only included one Motown performance: Diana Ross and the Supremes and the Temptations. The Tempts were the best part of this video especially knowing the background to their appearance. No Marvin Gaye? No Four Tops? Well, David Ruffin sings the "(I Know) I'm Losing You" duet with Diana, but Diana gets most of the lead. The song sounded pretty watered down for her. Ruffin was the best part of the duet---such a dynamic performer! I was disappointed in the Mamas and the Papas' performance (very very disappointed). There definitely should have been more performances.
15 best performances of Ed Sullivan.......2004-03-25
This DVD presents 15 performances (10 in color, 5 in black and white) selected from the Ed Sullivan Show aired at different times in 1950's and 60's. The performers are, in the order of appearance, Jackson 5(with 10 year old Michael!), Bill Haley and His Comets, Elvis Presley, Doors, Ray Charles, Jackie Wilson, James Brown, Roy Orbison, Beatles, Temptations and Supremes, Loving Spoonful, Mamas and Papas, CCR, Young Rascals, and Janis Joplin. Each performance is a gem(with a possible exception of one which appears to be lip-synced); the DVD could very well be called "the 15 best performances of Ed Sullivan". The picture quality is excellent, and the sound clean and good. The commentary by Michelle Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas is concise and yet helpful.
So, why not 5 stars? There are only 15 songs, one each by the above 15 performers. Granted that this DVD is priced a little lower than others, the entire show is only 50 minutes. By the time it ended, I felt that I had seen only the first half of it.
Temptations/Supremes Diana/David duet.......2004-01-11
Wow, this is a must to have, not only because it has The Beatles, The Doors, James Brown, Jackie Wilson, Bill Haley and the Comets, Janis Joplin and an innocent Jackson 5 (plus more) but it has The Temptations and Supremes on stage together. What really is the best is the lead singers of the Supremes, Diana Ross, and the lead singer of the Temptations, David Ruffin, doing a duet of each other's songs and David blows Diana off the stage. Great stuff.
