First-time filmmaker Godfrey Reggio's experimental documentary from 1983--shot mostly in the desert Southwest and New York City on a tiny budget with no script, then attracting the support of Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas and enlisting the indispensable musical contribution of Philip Glass--delighted college students on the midnight circuit and fans of minimalism for many years. Meanwhile, its techniques, merging cinematographer Ron Fricke's time-lapse shots (alternately peripatetic and hyperspeed) with Glass's reiterative music (from the meditative to the orgiastic)--as well as its ecology-minded imagery--crept into the consciousness of popular culture. The influence of Koyaanisqatsi, or "life out of balance," has by now become unmistakable in television advertisements, music videos, and, of course, in similar movies such as Fricke's own Chronos and Craig McCourry's Apogee. Reggio shot a sequel, Powaqqatsi (1988), and is planning to complete the trilogy with Naqoyqatsi. Koyaanisqatsi provides the uninitiated the chance to see where it all started--along with an intense audiovisual rush. --Robert Burns Neveldine

5 out of 5 stars Must see; Must own........2007-07-03

Shot in the late 70's and early 80's, this film has aged quite a bit from its introduction. This, as it turns out, only adds to the works splendor. I first saw this work in a live performance at Symphony Hall, Boston in 1990. Then, which seems like yesterday, it was less then 10 years old. Never-the-less, it made a deep impression on me and the audience as it received a tumultuous standing ovation at its end. In the 17 years that have passed since I first saw it, it has only grown in its meaning and complexities.

For me, the films ultimate meaning resides in the depiction of God's creations and man's futile attempts at that same act. Looking back at the nearly 30 years since it was first shot, the scenes of the Grand Canyon, clouds, deserts, Niagara Falls, etc., look as wondrous as ever, while the clothing, cars, haircuts, etc., seem hopelessly dated and tacky. Is there something to be said of nature being perfect and timeless and man's efforts being inherently flawed?

As for the music, this remains to me Glass' masterpiece. It is his best composition and his finest overall artistic achievement.

this movie is pretty good. this summarizes OUR life in a whole movie. basically, it shows how our life is fast paced and that we should slow it down a bit. but yeh, this is highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Putting life in the right perspective.......2007-04-09

No plot, no dialogue, only great music, great images, and a great message...
Quite an outstanding movie, to be watched in concentration, with your headphones on...

It leaves something in you and helps you put things into perspective.
It has been produced back in 1983, and I found myself wondering what those human beings caught by the camera were thinking at the time... what they were worrying about, what they were their ambitions and above all - what became of them.
Thinking of these things, things fell even more into perspective...

Do you like montage shots?

Do you like montage shots of rural countryside morphing into city side?

Do you have $14.98 to blow on a movie?

Well, then this is the movie for you!!!

Because it has montage shots, montage shots of rural countryside morphing into side city and it costs $14.98!!

But: if you're one of those picky people that wants plot, characters and people actually talking, then this is probably not your film.

Seriously, watching this movie shows you what hacks people like Shakespeare were wasting all that time with character development when they could have just spent some time developing time lapsed photography.

Oh yeah: I think the environment is important. Kyoto was a big deal and all that stuff. I also happen to admire the Hopi and if any are reading I offer to take you right now to lunch my treat!!!

But I still think this movie is maybe a little like the video version of the guy who orders an expensive wine to show you he knows about and can pronounce it.

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2007-03-31

This film has such a powerful message; and the filmmaker passes you that message without the use of words. This is great because viewers of any language can understand the films meaning. I believe that everyone should watch this movie once in their lives. I can't begin to tell the range of emotions i felt at the end of it.
