Dinosaurs may be extinct, but they still rule the world. When the first episode of the six-part BBC series Walking with Dinosaurs originally aired, an estimated one out of every four Britons tuned in. What they witnessed was dinosaurs brought to life, not in the modern world as in Jurassic Park, but in their original habitats millions of years ago. Revived using computer-generated effects that cost close to $5 million and sophisticated animatronic models, the dinosaurs look barely a day over 150 million years old. The creators present the series in classic nature-documentary style, complete with an authoritative narrator (Kenneth Branagh) to guide the viewer through the footage of dinosaurs mating, fighting, raising their young, grazing, or, in the case of carnivores, hunting. Each episode focuses on a theme, whether it is a particular era, such as the Mesozoic, or a particular type of dinosaur, like those that ruled the oceans. Each part also focuses in on the life of an individual dinosaur or family of dinosaurs. The result is a series of short dramas that both inform and entertain.

The show is so realistic that some scientists and viewers have criticized its seamless blending of fact and speculation. Those who wish to maintain a healthy skepticism about the theories set forth should watch the exclusive footage from The Making of Walking with Dinosaurs included on the DVD and available via mail-in on the VHS. In it, the scientists freely admit that some educated guesswork was involved and explain how they arrived at the dinosaurs' appearances and behavior. Regardless of whether one agrees or disagrees with every detail of the re-creation, it is difficult to deny that Walking with Dinosaurs succeeds in providing dinosaur lovers with an experience that can't be matched by mere images of paleontologists and fossils.

There's an extra 15 minutes of footage on the video that wasn't broadcast on TV, much of it dinosaurs attacking each other. With the violence, plus explanations of mating, cannibalism, and other terrifying things, young kids should skip it. Dinosaur enthusiasts of age 6 and up should be fine; it's far less violent than anything from the Jurassic Park films. --Eugene Wei

Many people think of the dinosaurs as the first inhabitants of the earth, but this prequel to Walking With Dinosaurs puts viewers in the midst of a host of strange creatures that inhabited the earth millions of years before the dinosaurs ever existed. With the help of complex computer animation and the research of hundreds of paleontologists, the BBC presents an extremely realistic picture of the earth's earliest, most primitive aquatic inhabitants and chronicles their evolution to the precursors of man himself and the mighty dinosaurs. The first Walking With Monsters episode begins in the Cambrian period 530 million years ago, showcasing how a simple jellyfish-like sea creature evolved over 200 million years into new creatures with eyes and protective external and internal skeletal systems. These adaptations resulted in the world's first fish, arthropods, amphibians, and land-loving reptiles. The second episode details the giant insects of the Carboniferous period 300 million years ago and demonstrates how evolution empowered amphibians and reptiles by creating mechanisms to regulate their own body temperature and developing specialized teeth. The final episode begins in the late Permian period 250 million years ago when the earth was essentially one large desert full of volcanic activity. While much of earth's life was extinguished during this period, adaptation and evolution continued, bringing the development of a specialized hip in a tiny reptile called the Euparkeria that would prove to be the forerunner of mammals and evolve into the dinosaurs in the Triassic period. While some criticize this project as a somewhat overly dramatic presentation of speculative paleontology as fact, this program utilizes scientific inference to bring pre-history to life and highlight the amazing adaptations and evolution of the earth's earliest inhabitants. The bonus "Trilogy of Life" feature details the research, vision and hard work inherent in the creation of the Walking With Monsters, Walking With Dinosaurs and Walking With Prehistoric Beasts. (Ages 6 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Another great achievement.......2007-07-06

As good or better than Walking with Dinosaurs. I will definitely purchase the rest of this series.

2 out of 5 stars Random bits of science at best.......2007-06-27

This could have been a truly wonderful experience, but it falls quite short of the rest of the series. The animations are still good, and it's wonderful to see all of these reconstructions (even when artistic licenses are invoked), but there are many parts that may mislead the casual viewer.

The video starts will the collision of a large bolide that led to the formation of the moon, and then we jump to the Cambrian and . If you are interested in geobiology, early plants or other invertebrates of the early oceans, don't even pick this video up; they are mentioned in passing if at all. Okay, so I guess we are talking about `monsters' and , not microbes, the first plants or other inverts, was the monster of the time, but the video moves on to , hardly a monster. Granted, eurypterids are covered, but the chronology of their evolution becomes quite confusing. Now, I am expecting some of the true monsters of the late Paleozoic; , xenacanthid sharks, , etc. Instead we leap ahead to and the land invasion of the amphibians ( is shown, but never mentioned by name). Suddenly, we are in a landscape (how about that amniote egg?--why not convey its importance?). Here is where a lot of speculation stretches the limits of reason. Apparently, though there is no evidence of it, baby pelycosaurs would cover themselves in dung to escape the cannibalistic adults. Funny, but I never came across anything like that in any of my paleoecology work... Later, the video implies that the eggs hatch in mere hours! Of course, there is a segue at the end leading us toward the dinosaurs, but there is no mention of the Permian extinction, or any extinction for that matter, and its causes!

I was reluctant to give this video three stars; the reconstructions are cool enough to warrant 2.5. Since I couldn't record such a score, I was forced, based primarily on the glaring omissions, extreme exaggerations and lack of continuity, to drop it down to two stars. If you own the other "Walking with..." videos, you will obviously want this video. If you are a paleontology minded person, you will enjoy seeing these fossils come to life. If you are a casual science fan, keep in mind that you are seeing only a very small and very random part of the picture. Less time should have been spent with creating a "Crocodile Hunter"-like program, and more time should have been spent showing how these monsters came about and why they are no longer around.

5 out of 5 stars The Start of the Timeline.......2007-06-06

If you enjoyed "Walking With Dinosaurs" and "Walking With Prehistoric Beasts", then you'll enjoy "Walking With Monsters". This journey takes you back to before the dinosaurs, to the start of life on Earth. You'll see the Earth's first super-predator get eaten by the Earth's first fish, 3-foot long scorpions devour ancient fish, two-ton fish eat sharks and 4-foot long salamanders, giant spiders, dragonflys, and millipedes fill a world ruled by swamps, giant reptiles with sails on their back get hunted by predators that look just like them, giant wolf-like reptiles and small prairie dog-like reptiles survive a harsh desert, and, finally, reptiles that migrate like wildebeests survive poisonous predators and ancient crocodiles. "Walking With Monsters" delights the young and the old and completes the BBC's story of life before humans. Enjoy!
NOTE: Creationists SHOULD NOT watch!

5 out of 5 stars Realistic.......2007-05-30

This is such an interesting set. I bought it after seeing some of it on tv, so I thought my Grandson ( a 5 yr. old dinosuar nut) would like seeing it next time he spends the weekend, well he hasn't seen it yet, but we (adults) have. It is put together so well, and the naration is great.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite of the series.......2007-03-13

I've really enjoyeda all of the "Walking With ..." shows I've seen, but this one is by far the best in my opinion. The special effects are much more advanced than those in the previous series. The material is extremely interesting. I mean, looking that far into the deep past is really cool, and not covered as much as the later periods like the age of the dinosaurs. Anyone who has in interest in early evolution has to check out this DVD.

The phenomenal BBC series Walking with Dinosaurs spawned this 30-minute special. Using the same blend of computer animation, puppetry, and story-driven narration (by Kenneth Branagh), Allosaurus: A Walking with Dinosaurs Special centers on one particular dinosaur dubbed Big Al. Found in Wyoming in the 1980s, Big Al's fossil remains comprise the most complete allosaur skeleton ever found. Enough clues are found in the bones, 145 million years after his death, to tell the story of what might have happened from his birth to his death. The film's naturalistic approach (unlike that used in the Disney film Dinosaur, whose characters could talk) is quite spectacular, with chills (a bog turns out to be a big dinosaur threat), thrills (allosaurs chase a group of giant diplodocus), and humor (a baby allosaur seems to bump into the "camera"). A half-hour companion program, "Big Al Uncovered," illustrates how the "what-if" story of Big Al was constructed using facts uncovered by paleontologists (including the 17 injuries found in the skeleton) and filling in the gaps using the dinosaur's distant cousins (birds and crocodiles). The BBC production does not shy away from the violent world of dinosaurs, including mating and hunting techniques. However, any dinosaur fan age 7 and up should find all the Walking with Dinosaurs specials an exciting and fun education. --Doug Thomas

Description

Life was hard in the Jurassic age, even for a large dinosaur at the top of the food chain. A few years ago, the most complete allosaurus skeleton ever found was discovered in Wyoming. The bones tells a surprisingly detailed biography of one individual dinosaur, Big Al, as he came to be known by the scientists who pieced together his story. The creators of Walking With Dinosaurs have vividly recreated this 15-year story from birth to death using the same computer graphic and animatronic techniques that stunned viewers throughout the world when they saw the original series. A companion program, Big Al Uncovered, shows how the scientists were able to trace the evidence of Big Al's life story. Using the same state-of-the-art graphic effects, Big Al haunts the modern-day museums and dig sites as passionate scientists explain their findings and theories. Nominated for three Emmy Awards.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-12-15

This is one of the very few DVDs I can stand to watch with my sons! It's educational, and very cool. It is a bit graphic and violent at times, as my sons are only 19 months and 4 years, but they enjoy it and ask for it every single day. My older son will play with his dinosaurs while watching, and my younger son requests it by growling like "Big Al" as he's become known in our house! Even my husband enjoys watching this one. I plan to buy more in the series as my sons get a little older.

5 out of 5 stars allosaurus.......2005-08-20

IT IS A GREAT EPISODE. IT IS A GREAT ADVENTURE! I LOVE THIS DVD AND RECKAMEND IT FOR EVERYONE.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Walking With Dinosaurs........2005-01-15

The reason I like this more than the others was because they gave us a lot of data on just one dinosaur - a Allosaurus named Big Al. Big Al's story is based on what information scientists were able to get from a almost complete skeleton found in Wyoming. The story is about his life, which was only 15 years long. 60 minutes, half of which is the story and half of which is about how they figured out what they did from the bones.
I kind of feel sorry for Big Al. He had a REALLY tough life and we don't even know if he ever got to have offspring or not. Was he a father of dozens of Allosaurus babies or did his genes end with his death? Extras also include a photo gallery and storyboards.

3 out of 5 stars The "Seventh" episode of Walking with Dinosaurs.......2004-10-06

The Ballad of Big Al (also known as "Allosaurus") acts as a good add-on to Walking with Dinosaurs (seen it?). Because it's only about 30 minutes, The Ballad of Big Al has alot less killing. The narration, though, is still bad. I wish they had an option to mute the narration.

4 out of 5 stars Well researched prehistoric ballad.......2003-11-15

This dramatic narrative follows the life of actual Allosaurus, Big Al, from an egg to the corpse of a fierce hunter. Even though the filming skips about Al's life, the flow of the production is hardly damaged. The research for the film is impressive; even the Allosaurus fight has some evidence from Al's fossils. Superb computer graphics and animatronics create the believable dinosaurs. There is suspense, action and tradgedy,as well as humor and fun woven into the story. One negative comment is with the location of the filming. It is filmed in Utah and Arizona, which do not look quite accurate, but the extensive research and realistic dinosaurs balance it out. This good short film lets the viewer experience how a dinosaur may have lived.

Prehistoric Planet
This well-received Discovery Kids television series cleverly cannibalized footage from two hugely popular, BBC primetime programs Walking with Dinosaurs and Walking with Prehistoric Beasts, reworking the CGI-heavy dino-dramas into absorbing (and--shh!--educational) fare. The result was, and is, smashing. Narrated by Ben Stiller and ingeniously scripted, the series delineates epochs, species, and prehistoric environments in an entertaining effort to broaden one's detailed appreciation of ancient creatures of the land, sea, and air. Meet Ornithocheirus, a Cretaceous-period flying pterosaur whose 40-foot wingspan can carry him from the future Florida coast to Europe in a day--yet who could end up as snack food for the 80-foot aquatic monster Liopleurodon. Or the fascinating, 6-foot Leallynasaura, a 106-million-year-old denizen of Antarctica's rainforest (!) who avoids the predatory Koolasuchus (seriously) through clan cooperation. There's more to prehistoric Earth than the stylish raptor and bullying T-Rex; meet their neighbors here. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Really engaged my 12-year-old.......2007-06-03

My daughter saw part of this DVD and school and was so enthusastic about sharing it with me that we ended up purchasing it when we weren't able to rent it from any local video store. As she had not shown interest in dinosaurs or paleontology before, I was surprised at her insistence that we see it, but when we watched it together, I understood why she found it so compelling.

It is done in the style of a wildlife documentary, and the effects are so realistic that it is easy to "go along for the ride" and believe that you are watching dinosaurs being filmed in their natural habitat. The storytelling is also quite engaging. The best part was my daughter's enjoyment of it; I haven't seen anything but manga have quite the same hold over her imagination!

Our five-year-old, dinosaur-loving son LOVES this movie. He could watch it everyday if we let him. The graphics are amazing...very realistic. Nigel, the narrator, is his hero!

5 out of 5 stars Walking with Dinosaurs.......2007-01-09

I have used this video in my classroom for years. I replaced it recently due to sticky fingers of a student. That tells you that children - 10-12 love the video too.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Production Values.......2007-01-04

The quality of this production is second to none. This video triggered a huge interest in dinosaurs by my 5-year old and even my 2-year old asks to see it often. The making of the video documentary is also very interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Holy Cow, it's good.......2006-11-20

When i was about three, my dad got me a dinosaur book and i made him read half of it to me every single night. I had practically memorized it. So then my aunt bought me this movie. When i first watched it, that part where the tyrannosaurus attack eachother, i thought that it was actually filmed that way. I think i watched this thing forty seven times. I memrized every animal in it. Recently i noticed some faults in it- these are just little things, and they don't really take away.
1. The Placerias looks like its legs are a bit too long.
2. The Tyrannosaurus' legs are too long and its skull is too short and forward facing- that is, its eyes face foward too much ( they fixed this in Prehistoric Park)
3. The Utahraptor's tail is too short (a common error) and it has scales and it claw is far too small.

But seriously this is good. I love it.

3 out of 5 stars although Avery Brooks appears on the credits hes not narrating. .......2006-11-03

It the visuals rock, its got great directing and writing. you know all this already. what you may want to know is that this version, thought avery brooks is listed is not narrated by him. for me this is bad news as i am a big fan of the US television narrated version, this features the british version. yes its uncut, but i still wish avery brooks version had appeared on the dvd as listed. this kenny guy is just BORING. he reads like its a grocery list for someone he doesnt even like.

it would get a full five if avery was narrating, but with kenny's voice its only a 3.

4 out of 5 stars real dinosours on t.v.......2006-07-15

For any of us who always wanted to know about dinosours: their feeding, size, reproduction, ... thus their living , this is perfect way to have a close view of these creatures that we were just able to imagine so far.

Nevertheless I've found these collection rather short ignoring futher details about these creatures that many people might miss, somehow it is supposed to be a mere overview.

All and all excelent special effects ,very good piece of work for t.v.

5 out of 5 stars Walking with Dinosaurs Collection.......2007-01-11

I saw this program on TV several years back and loved it. Thought it would be good for my 7 year old who is facinated by dinosaurs and she loved it. It's very educational, as well as, entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome collection!.......2007-01-10

Of course we all get the standard breeze-over learning about dinosaurs while going through elementary school. Then the movie Jurassic Park showed what technology could do in terms of recreating what dinosaurs looked like. Now this collection brings together the best of both worlds, teaching exactly what the best experts believe life was like in the time of the dinosaurs, combined with the ability to actually show it happening. It's tons of fun to watch and feel like a kid again, amazed by how much different the world was back then. I highly recommend this to kids, ages 1 to 100.

5 out of 5 stars Walking with the dinosaurs dvd set.......2006-11-06

Very pleased with on time delivery and condition of set. Just what we were looking for

5 out of 5 stars great collection for anyone into paleontology.......2006-11-04

My [...] year old loves this set. He also has Walking with Monsters and Chased by Dinosaurs. He even watches the extras, which explain the computer animation, and the research that went into creating the series. Not all parents might find it appropriate for kids his age, since it shows animals doing all the things animals normally do, including defecating, mating, and killing prey.
