Editorial Review:
Amazon.com
This documentary is a treat, a look at the beat writers that benefits not only from a wealth of vital source information, including interviews with major figures, but also from an abundance of intelligence and wit. Interspersed with clips of Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, Neal Cassady, and William S. Burroughs are brilliant montages of clips that set the beats in the context of their times. The story of how the beats rebelled against American conformity in the 1950s is well known, of course, but this documentary manages to find fresh ways to relate their views on life and writing. Segments in which Johnny Depp, John Turturro, and Dennis Hopper portray, respectively, Kerouac, Ginsberg, and Burroughs may strike some as extraneous, but the good performances redeem their inclusion in the film. As befits the documentary's title, The Source devotes considerable attention to the influence of the beats, and interviews with such notables as Ken Kesey, Jerry Garcia, and Philip Glass, performance clips of Bob Dylan, and news footage from the 1960s establish how the sensibility of the writers trickled into all of society. This is not only a fine introduction to the beats, but those who already revere them will find the profusion of material contained it to be a delight. --Robert J. McNamara

5 out of 5 stars The great one.......2007-06-16

I agree with the above.

This is certainly the best movie I have seen dealing with an eating disorder. It takes you into the mind of the sufferer...and a true one at that. Because Tracy Gold made this movie just getting out of treatment for anorexia, it trult depicts what hell a person is in with this demond. It also shares light on what a famiuly goes through as a loved one suffers. Alothough not everyone suffers the same, has the same help, or suffers from the same reasons I am sure that if you suffer from an eating disorder, or have a loved on who does yoiu will relate.

5 out of 5 stars For love of this movie.......2007-05-16

This isn't the first movie that deals with eating disorders, but it's the best. The acting is first rate, the story is compelling and it's told in a sensitive manner that others haven't been able to accomplish. This is a true story and that fact makes this movie all the more touching. This could be any family, in any city or town in America. You really care about the people in this movie and hope everything turns out okay. I think that it's some of the best acting I've seen from any of the actors especially Tracey Gold who drew on her own experiences to portray the devestating effects these illnesses cause.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent message, but so-so acting.......2007-06-20

I think Tori Spelling is way better suited for roles like Donna Martin in 90210. She's spunky and hilarious in real life, and so was Donna. I don't think she's good at the dramatic bitch character. Regardless, if you can overlook the iffy acting on her part, the movie is very good. So many girls are teased mercilessly in high school, and just want to belong. Angela, the self-tortured student played by Kellie Martin (who does a much better job acting) decides that she will go to any lengths to be included in the popular crowd, resorting to murder. Despite this being a true story and probably a rare occurrence, the message is clear: kids need to be nicer to each other and just let people be who they are. Cliques and stereotypes tear people down and make school years miserable. Tweens and teens should see this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Ra Ra Ra... M.U.R.D.E.R spells murder..........2007-01-23

This story is about being popular in school and being in the IT club. Both Tori Spelling and Kellie Martin do a fantastic job in this movie. I remember high school and the in-crowd and wanting to be in it. This movie brings you back to that time and makes you wonder. Some people are willing to do anything to become popular, and in this movie... murder may be the key:(

4 out of 5 stars Tragic Permanent Solution to a Temporary Problem.......2006-11-21

I remember reading Randall Sullivan's 1985 article which served as the basis for this 1994 TV drama.
Interestingly, I was close to quite a few people who were threatened with knives during my pre-and early teen years, and the year before the real-life murder depicted in this story took place, survived a near-stabbing at the hands of two girls in my unsupervised science class, who thought it was a lark to play with the rusty knife the science teacher used to cut minerals, and aim it at the necks of unsuspecting classmates. While my would-be assailants were apprehended quickly, and did not return to that school after that year, this is a story about a teenage girl who was able to hide from authorities for six months after committing a fatal stabbing.
Based on the 1984 murder of a beautiful, dark-haired, olive-skinned cheerleader named Kirsten Costas by a less-affluent blonde classmate named Bernadette Protti, the film stars Kellie Martin as Angela Del Vecchio, the youngest daughter of a pious, lower-middle-class family as its "Bernadette".
A kind, sweet-tempered, introspective girl, who recently transfered from a Catholic school, Angela suffers from low self-esteem. Spurred by the school Principal's (Terry O'Quinn's) speech on "being the best", given an assembly at the beginning of the year, Angela sets her sights on joining the elite social service group, the Meadowlarks (or just Larks), becoming the school yearbook editor, becoming a cheerleader, and getting the Queen Bee student who embodies all that she desires to be to incorporate her into her social circle.
Tori Spelling plays Stacy Lockwood, the Golden Girl, who unwittingly and unfortunately becomes the object of Angela's admiration and envy.
In reality, the victim and perpetrator had very little contact with each other, which is one major innaccuracy of the film, although Stacy did slight her killer-to-be about her skiing attire.
The incident where Stacy illicitly reads another girl's diary was also portrayed inaccurately. It was mentioned by an acquaintance of the victim in Sullivan's article. But presumably, that incident and many others in the film were staged that way to give insight, if not into the victim's character, than definitely insight into the way she was perceived by the girl who would eventually take her life.
Valerie Harper was great as Angela's kind, religious mother, who is supportive of her daughter, but perhaps not fully aware of how devastating the failure to reach certain goals, and the rejection of certain peer group members will really be for her.
Marley Shelton plays Jamie, a friend of Angela's who joins in Stacy's mocking of the punk rocker girl (Kathryn Morris)--later a prime suspect in Stacy's slaying--only because she was afraid of Stacy. Margaret Langslide is Angela's other best friend, Jill.
The film exaggerates the trendiness of the elite girls to a fault, depicting them wearing obscenely long strands of pearls, but does not exaggerate their clannishness and exclusivity.
We see how Stacy makes more of an impression on the School Principal than Angela when both of the young office workers tell him they are going to try out for cheerleading, and we see how Stacy gets away with flouting certain school rules.
Words of wisdom from her priest(Eugene Roche) and her sister Theresa(Christa Miller) do little to console her as she fails to reach most of her goals.
Angela does become a Lark, and a candystriper. I have observed how teens who work as candystripers are often resentful towards peer group members who don't have that responsibility, perceiving them as people who don't take life seriously enough whether it's true or not.
Within a few year's time and with a little more maturity and hindsight, the real killer may have come to realize that the object of her fixation had no real obligation to pay her any attention or to justify her life to her if she didn't want to, and she may ultimately have come to realize that a relationship with her wasn't really all that important.
Among the things teens should be made to realize is that in most cases, their peer group members are no more responsible for the success of failure of their families' financial situation than anyone else their age, and to try to make that less of an issue. But Santa Mira (in real life, Orinda, California) is a competitive and goal-oriented community, where it is easy for anyone that age to lose sight of that fact.
Shortly after the end of that school year, when Stacy wins a place on the cheerleading squad and Angela doesn't, and Angela's desperation for acceptance by the "In Crowd" reaches an all-time high, she places a call to Stacy's mother, identifying herself only as a member of the Larks, and inviting her to a dinner on behalf of the Larks when no such event is to take place, in order to have time alone with Stacy to try to befriend her. Angela illegally takes the family car out and picks up a reluctant Stacy from her family home.
True to Bernadette Protti's actual testimony, Stacy is enraged when she learns there is no dinner for the Larks, and refuses to go to a party with Angela. They drive into a church parking lot where Stacy begins to smoke pot, and Stacy denounces Angela when she refuses to do the same.
Stacy hurries over to a nearby residence to ask a couple for a ride home, explaining the precarious situation with her friend in the shadows.
Angela tails the car as Stacy is driven home by someone else, and her mind process--in which she fears what Stacy will tell everyone the following day--is revealed to the audience.
In hindsight, one would say it is better to be slighted for being weird for a brief time than to have the world call you a murderer for the rest of your life.Angela fatally stabs Stacy as she stands at the front door of a residence, and the heartbreak of the community is deeply felt.
For nearly six months, the wrong girl is accused, although in reality there were two girls accused, and one did not return to that school the following year.
But using descriptions from witnesses, and psychological profiling, FBI agents, led by James Avery, find the killer, and the community is forced to come to terms with some painful truths about itself in Bernadette's church, and in the trial that follows.
The class with which the victim and perpetrator would have graduated just celebrated its 20th year reunion. Surely those marred by this tragedy have a different perspective on it now that many are undoubtably parents themselves, and while the victim could have been a nicer person, she might have at least had a chance to live and outgrow that phase of her life.
The killer was released from prison on June 10, 1992 despite the objections of the victim's parents (who moved to Hawaii), and can never return to Orinda as a condition of her release.
About the only positive aspect of all this is that the real-life social service group to which both girls belonged became more inclusive, and at too great a cost, many of the young who were affected by this tragedy began to redefine their values.

4 out of 5 stars High School=ugly!.......2006-10-26

How many people went through this in High School? The need to be popular, the mean girl who everyone is scared of and in awe of at the same time, and adults involved who think that winning is everything. This story is so real. As a teacher, I would like to create a curriculum around itto help others learn how to think for themselves and how to develop self worth. The casting was perfect. Tori played a good heifer and Kellie has pathetic down pact.

5 out of 5 stars If you like Lifetime TV's movies, you'll like this one too.......2006-05-13

Kellie Martin plays unpopular high schooler Angela Delveccio, who longs to be part of the "in" crowd. She joins as many activities as she can, including The Larks, which is an afterschool service club. Many of the popular girls are Larks, including the nasty Stacy Lockwood (Tori Spelling) who delights in humiliating the lone goth chick at school.

One night, Stacy and Angela get into a fight and Anglea blurts out an embarassing litany of reasons why she's so obsessed with Stacy. Unsurprisingly, Stacy is creeped out and mocks Angela, saying she's going to tell everyone at school about how weird Angela is. The idea of public humiliation pushes Angela over the edge and she stabs Stacy to death. The last part of the movie deals with Angela trying to keep her crime a secret from the police while the poor goth chick gets blamed by students for Stacy's death.

I saw this on Lifetime a couple years ago and have been waiting for it to be released on DVD! Kellie really nails the character of the desperate, plain-jane Angela and Tori is perfect as the rich bitch Stacy.

4 out of 5 stars worth seeing.......2007-02-16

Yes, if you're looking for a feel-good movie, you should definitely get this one. Darrah Cloud knows how to put together a story with bang-up endings, and this movie with its two story threads has two great endings, back-to-back.

But there is some bad news. Naomi Judd (unless of course you're a fan of hers) is not much of an actress here. Her scenes look more like a personal appearance, with lines.

The daughter is cute and believable. The uncle is also credible.

The love story is totally botched. The pacing is disjointed. And there is a lack of motivation. It is simply not credible, so don't expect to be touched by it.

Andy is Andy, and he adds a touch a quality that makes the others look more amateurish than they otherwise would.

The rock music (and the absence of Christmas music) was a bit grating. It was sad that the school kids couldn't relate to any Christmas carols. They had to have rock. The raw, harsh tone of the girl singing what were supposed to be Christmas songs was a dischordant note for me. Others might not be bothered.

Still, I say don't miss it. There aren't that many that you can afford to pass it up. Darrah Cloud's "A Holiday for Love" is a much better movie, so if you're only getting one, get that one instead.

4 out of 5 stars AKA - A Song for the Season .......2007-01-26

I really liked this Christmas movie, but I don't understand why the identical movie has two different names. The new principal (hatchet-man) has come to Bethlehem to revamp the high school and falls for the music teacher who is helping his niece.

5 out of 5 stars A Holiday Romance.......2007-01-18

These days it's hard to find a good, family movie that tells a great story without being too sentimental at the same time. I really enjoyed the way Naomi Judd brought out the best in Gerald McRaney and his niece. This was a heart-warming movie of many triumphs.

5 out of 5 stars The best disaster film I've seen yet ............2007-06-28

For once, the subplots weren't overwhelming or detracting from the major theme of a film, this one focused mainly upon the prediction of the imminent "big one." The most diverting subplot dealt with a very persistent sniper determined to bag his quarry and was quite enjoyable. ;-P

And the "big one" did indeed happen, preceded by smaller quakes and followed by aftershocks. The realism was absolutely terrific, the acting superb, and the overall mood solemn and thought-provoking.

Highly recommended for disaster film fans! :-)

3 out of 5 stars Bought this for a dollar at Wal-Mart and was very happy.......2007-04-02

OK, no Oscar winner(or Emmy winner , as this was a T.V. mini-series) here but a very nice pre-CGI effects try at once again sending Los Angeles rolling around and destroying the dream factory. THe effects are not bad and the actors are very good and the 3 hours roll(sorry had to do it) by very well.

4 out of 5 stars Well-done disaster flick.......2007-03-08

Joanna Kerns, the lovable mom from Growing Pains, leads us through the "Big One" that hits Southern California. I admit that my penchant for disaster movies biases me, but The Great Los Angeles Earthquake provides a better-than-B-movie presentation of the destruction of L.A. The 'science' appeared convincing enough to bring me into the story. A cross between an educational after-school special and a prime-time disaster flick intended to grab market share, this movie adequately captures the drama surrounding the event, before, during, and after. The underlying storylines moves us through easily and credibly. The special effects certainly date this movie to some degree, but considering its own era, and the fact that the film was made for TV, the effects come off as convincing enough to repel laughter and instead draw in the audience into a horrible realism. I waited years for the movie to be placed on DVD. It's well worth the wait.

5 out of 5 stars The way a natural disaster flick is SUPPOSED to be!.......2007-01-22

This movie was so good, I don't think I could watch it again. This is not to knock the movie in any way, it's just my stomach isn't made for these movies. That said, the whole movie is very realistic, and the ending is not a feel good ending like Aftershock. So if you like these movies, strap yourself in.

4 out of 5 stars The Great Los Angeles Earthquake.......2007-01-03

Very prompt order receiving (unlike the ones I have waiting since 22nd December to receive directly from Amazon.com for textbooks). The movie was used by several students for reports due in a Natural Disasters class in college. We had to pick out what was "right" about the science and what was "wrong" about the science. This particular movie was mine to do so was very interested in it. It portrayed an earthquake on a real fault pretty good but what happens in earthquakes and the time it takes to get to people (or across town in a disaster) is unreal.

5 out of 5 stars Gayle R. Donham.......2007-06-28

This movie would be good for everyone to see.It was about a spiral staircase which was built by a stranger. There were no nails used and the type of wood was a pine that only grows in about 10 locations on the Northern continent. The construction of the staircase was that of a helix design. This means the steps revolved around and around a single core (helix)which also was springy vertical depending on how much weight was on the staircase. The staircase was completed many years ago in Santa Fe, New Mexico and still stands today, and maybe visited.A real good movie.

1 out of 5 stars Ye of little Faith.......2007-04-10

That's all I could think of when my family and I sat down to watch this movie together. We had told the story to our children about the miraculous staircase built without nails in a small chapel in Santa Fe. The story itself is so powerful and moving. Built in the 1870s, the chapel was nearly complete when it became apparent the choir loft stairs would not fit. The sisters' prayed a novena to St. Joseph and on the ninth day their prayers were answered when a mysterious carpenter arrived, built the "miraculous" staircase, and then disappeared without being paid. The staircase is a double helix with no visible support. It's 23 feet tall and makes two 360 degree spirals, and the wood used is not a known wood in any area near Santa Fee!

This movie however is about a mother superior who has faith but harbors real resentment towards Indians and also likes to curse (how this has anything to do with the actual story I still have no idea!). At one point when a nun is "shocked" to hear mother curse mother surperior responds "Oh Margret get off the cross and get down here with the rest of us". When the mysterious carpenter shows up and starts to build the staircase, the architect and the contractor decide that this is a bad thing and threaten to kill the carpenter. Meanwhile this carpenter who is sent by "God" builds the staircase with wood that doesn't work, is arrested after being falsly accused of attempted murder, and leaves everyone to believe vandalls destroyed the staircase when in fact he originally destroyed it before rebuilding it better. In the end the staircase is built and this mother superior (who is on death's door) is so moved that she literally crawls up the staircase in a very "weird"/"uncomfortable" scene until she reaches the choir loft and dies. Wow, inspiring.
The best thing I could think of is this director and writer took a wonderful and moving story and turned it into a Hollywood flop. This was obviously written, directed, and produced by people who have no idea how the staircase was built but are pretty darn sure it wasn't a miracle because hey, miracles just don't happen. The acting was pretty good but the story was junk. Unfortunately I bought this movie.

If you are looking for a true inspirational movie that you can watch with your family, rent or buy Mother Theresa with Olivia Hussey. Hands down the best Saints movie every filmed. Half way through the movie my 5 year old says out loud "Wow, she REALLY cares about everybody!" Inspirational movie, compared to this disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars Touched My Soul.......2007-02-25

I remember hearing about this staircase when I was a teenager. A staircase built without using nails. It really moved me to tears, but not really sad tears. Barbara Hershey and William Petersen give an excellent performance in this movie. The movie left me believing in miracles and the strength of the human spirit. A carpenters work of art...............

5 out of 5 stars The Staircase.......2007-01-10

Having lived in Santa Fe, NM, this story is near and dear to my heart. What an excellant film!

4 out of 5 stars UPLIFTING AND TOUCHING.......2006-09-21

Based on a true story, THE STAIRCASE is one of those uplifting Christian movies heavy on morals and faith, and thanks to an intelligent script and very good performances, it works.
Barbara Hershey gives a smooth and touching performance as Mother Madeleine, a dying nun who wants to see the completion of a chapel in the Santa Fe territory before she dies. This seems impossible when the architect "forgets" to put in a staircase to the choir loft. Without the funds necessary to complete the staircase, that dream seems unlikely...until a mysterious stranger named Mr. Joad shows up out of nowhere and offers to build a spiral staircase with no charge. CSI's William Petersen gives a strong understated performance as Joad, whose mission becomes both a blessing and a curse as the original contractors (David Clennon and Justin Louis) don't want Joad to do the staircase. It may all play out with predictable results but it's sincerity is so genuine, it's a fine little film.

5 out of 5 stars Great copies of the Fit TV workouts.......2007-03-21

I've been watching Caribbean Workout on Fit TV for years, and would tape some of my favorites so I could repeat the workouts. It was great to have some DVD sets to use instead. The workouts are about 22 minutes long, the same length as the TV show without commercials. I really recommend these for people who need a low impact workout, as these are short workouts and are easily modified. As host Shelly McDonald says, if you can't do a move, just keep moving with a step you can do. There are other workouts available as well, such as kickboxing, and several pilates and yoga workouts. I wish the dance episodes of Caribbean Workout would be released on DVD, but otherwise I can't complain.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent workouts.......2007-02-25

I really like this DVD. It contains four 20 minute (approx) workouts - 2 hi/lo inpact and 2 low impact. I do both low impact classes on days when I want a good light workout and both hi/lo classes on days I want a little more of a challenge. The ladies do get off-cue sometimes and occasionally, Shelly will miscue or forget to cue a move; that is the only reason I did not give it 5 stars. But once you get used to the routine, these will become nonissues for you. The ladies, Shelly, Caroline, and Joanne, are fun and energetic without being annoying. The high impat portions can be easily modified to low impact and vice versa, so any fitness level can get a good workout.

3 out of 5 stars It's a good thing my knees are in good shape!.......2006-03-24

I was not familiar with the C.A. or Shelly before I bought this. I've only been through the first low impact portion twice and I was going to wait a bit longer to write this review but I don't think this is going to get any better. I'm accustomed to variety and I don't get it here. What I DO get is a lot of knee-bending. 20 some minutes of knee bending. I don't understand what people are so excited about. This isn't fun. Obviously, I'm in the minority and because of that, I'll do the remainder of the DVD but geesh, I don't think my opinion is going to change and I'm not sure how much more my knees can take. I don't even breathe heavy.. what's the point?

5 out of 5 stars Fun, high energy aerobic routines...........2005-12-23

This DVD is one of my best purchases of 2005 by far, for a small price you get 4-20 minute aerobic routines, two low impact and two hi-low impact led by Shelly McDonald. Shelly is joined by Joanna and Carolyn, all three of them are in great shape and seem to be having a great time. The music is great, and the scenery spectacular. The videos are shot at various locations in Barbados, some on the beach or poolside at the Sugar Hill Resort.

The routines themselves are easy to follow, the moves are basic but lots of fun, plus the hi-lo routines are easily modifiable to low impact which is nice. Lots of the same moves are seen in all the routines, which might bother some people but I didn't seem to mind this at all. I especially like the short length of the routines, I often do cardio following my strength training and find that these are great as add-ons, or you can do a couple of them for a longer workout. Shelly misses a couple cues here and there but overall I really like her as an instructor, she and her friends provide a fun, relaxed atmosphere, which makes it even more fun for me.

These workouts were originally filmed for Fit TV, therefore there are brief commercial breaks where the screen goes black, but it's for only a few seconds. As another reviewer said, each workout has it's own warmup and cooldown, plus some of the routines have brief toning segments at the end.

Overall this is a great buy, it is one of the DVD's in my collection that gets the most use. I would highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys simple but fun aerobic routines.

4 out of 5 stars Caribbean Workout Aerobics.......2005-04-15

I picked this DVD up at a local Ross store for $6.99. It came with the Kickboxing DVD. For the price, it was a great buy. Each DVD has four 20 minute workouts. The Aerobics DVD has two low impact and two high impact workouts. They include athletic (rather than dancy) moves that are easy to learn. There is some repetition and overlap (the workouts have some similar moves) but it doesn't get tiresome. The moves can be easily modified to make them higher or lower impact.

The music is club-ish, I've heard it in Karen Voight and CIA workouts. The scenery is gorgeous, and Shelly has a natural, easy manner, as do her background exercisers. This DVD would be good for someone looking for short workouts, and would be considered intermediate, though I think you could make it easier or harder if you wanted. There are cuts where the commercials would be, but when they "return," the exercisers are still doing the same moves so the cuts aren't too bad.

My only complaint is that this DVD isn't chaptered, so if you decide to do two of the workouts, you end up doing two warm-ups and cool downs. You can fast-forward through them though.
