Ripple (Ripped) Effects.......2007-06-12

Now thirty years after it was released, 'Pumping Iron,' a breakthrough documentary, has changed much in our culture with ripple effects that are still pumping through today. Seeming an obscure project, the film put bodybuilding on the map and made it respectable. The format of the film is used in documentaries and "reality tv" even today. The focal point is the Mr. Olympia title, the pinnacle achievement for male bodybuilders, but the drama captures Arnold Schwarzenegger just before he plans retirement. Add to that a rising rival in Lou Ferringo, and you have yourself a contest. Interviewing the participants and unveiling their motivations and thoughts gives the whole presentation more meat and development. 'Pumping Iron' made bodybuilding into a mainstream and formidable franchise.

Featuring grueling training sessions, and the indespensible interviews by key players, the whole spectacle has much more meaning. Knowing that mental aspects are crucial to success in sports, Schwarzenegger proves that it is no less removed from bodybuilding than from any other sport. Seeing supporting roles by dedicated players like Mike Katz gives the whole enterprise a greater scope and respectability. (It is doubtful that the repurcussions of health clubs, and, Arnold's reign at the box office and over a state described as the "fifth largest world economy" would be possible--to name but a few influencial developments.)

'Pumping Iron' is still a motivation powerhouse, especially seeing all the primitive equipment the contestants used; all of which has significantly improved much since then.

The movie that changed it all.........2007-05-24

I just saw this DVD twice this weekend. I saw pumping iron when I was little and remember clips but not much. I bought this video last week and I love it. All the extras were great. Interview with Arnold and his bio and the hours of footage that didn't make it into the movie. Questions that people have been asking for years about Arnold and that time frame were answered by arnold himself. The movie showed how they trained then. how the body building world was back then. Arnold in his prime and Lou Ferrigno in his younger days. They even had a reunion with some of the old bodybuilders from the movie which was great. I can't recommed this movie enough for all who are into body building. plus watching this movie gives me great motivation to keep going at it in the gym. While i know i will never get as big as this guys ( not like I want to.) but it still inspires me...

Pumping Iron Redux.......2007-05-13

This is a great second version of Pumping Iron because of the comments and interviews with Governor Arnold at the end of the movie. Great for those who have followed the bodybuilding scene since the '60's.

Great movie!.......2007-05-08

Being an avid weightlifter and hearing great things about this movie, I decided to purchase it here on Amazon. I thought the movie was great and it really went behind the scenes of the whole bodybuilding scene. Overall, I thought the movie is great, and without a doubt in the Top 5 for bodybuilding movies. It was cool to see how competitive these athletes were, and to see the turmoil between Arnold and Ferrigno. However, beware, the movie was made in the 70's so it will take you back a bit into how bodybuilding was back in the day. The clothes, music, and gyms were definitely some of the highlights in the movie.

Good Documentary on Body Building Competitions.......2007-04-24

No dazzling special effects or advanced story plot here. Just a good look into the training/competing aspects of body building.

Its cool to see Arnold before he was a huge movie star and see some of the old-time body builders with him. To me, he was not the star of the show. I really liked Lou Ferrigno is this documentary. It was good to see a few "nice guys" in the sport and to see the real bond between him and his father.

Its funny though. All the bad reviews refer to Arnold as "Governor". Seems like some people let their political views cloud all parts of their life(including how they view films that were made 30 yrs ago!). Get a life, you extremist hacks.

Come on Arnold!.......2004-12-08

Is this the version of pumping iron I watched at my cousin's house. In that version, Arnold has a monologue about how much he likes cumming, and how weight lifting, and body building contests are like cumming, and so he's always cumming in some fashion. Then there's the version I saw in gym class, where the cumming monologue is edited out. I want to know if this one has the cumming or not. I like the cumming. It's funny to watch a young arnold with a rich, robust Austrian accent say the word cum like 7 times in a minute. I'll admit it, I'm only in it for the cumming. Terminator 3 sucked anyway.

Movie? Documentary? Cult Classic? ...Great Film........2007-04-27

There are a lot of different angles that other reviewers have approached this film from in their comments posted here at Amazon. Perhaps I'll touch on some of those same issues in my review, but I just want to start of by saying that "Pumping Iron II: The Women" has undoubtedly become one of my favorite movies in recent months. When I first purchased a used VHS copy of the film from Amazon and watched it with my husband, he tolerated it with a certain detached interest because of his affection for me and the fact that I've been "pumping iron" since before we even started dating. Yet multiple viewings of the film found it growing on him (it was an immediate hit with me) and today he can watch it with almost as much enthusiasm as I can.

I have yet to see the original "Pumping Iron" with Schwarzenegger and his 70s-era ilk (and I hope to soon), but "The Women" certainly stands on its own in my mind as a film filled with social commentary, explosive athletic prowess, and human emotion. How much of the film was scripted and how much was shot as true documentary I cannot say, but the personalities of the four main characters all shine with unique feeling and depth. Rachel McLish, the bodybuilding world's "queen bee" of the early 80s, is a kitten-ish prima donna who easily accepts her role as public icon. Carla Dunlap (later, Dunlap-Kaan), a black woman with a mind as sharp as a razor who is as cultured and well-bred as anyone you'd ever like to meet, approaches her sport with a dignity, respect, joy, and intelligence that is unparalleled by any other competitor in the film. Lori Bowen (later, Bowen-Rice) is something of a homegrown, feel-good female bodybuilder from Texas who has made McLish her icon and yet somehow surpasses her model with true heart, enthusiasm, and relative innocence. Last but not least is Bev Francis, the Australian powerlifter-turned-bodybuilder who shocks and scandalizes the world, essentially, with her unprecedented size, mass, and "masculine" muscularity.

Other background characters include such early 80s bodybuilding champions as Gladys Portugues, onetime wife of Jean-Claude Van Damme, and Finland's adorable Marjo Selin. Anyone even vaguely familiar with the bodybuilding scene back then will be pleasantly surprised to pick these noteworthy women out of the lineup at the Caesar's Palace competition. The backstage dissent between the competitors regarding such issues as appropriate size, mass, vascularity, et cetera for a female bodybuilder are echoed that much more sharply in the often harsh prejudices of the judges. The movie seems to want to point out such obvious bigotry and relative senselessness of said arguments for a sport that greatly is gauged on size and mass, as well as proportion and symmetry; yet a few other scenes (like a very unnecessary gym shower scene earlier in the movie) would want to objectify the muscular female body and make it a sex object. Not that those issues have at all been reconciled today, particularly with the advent of the more "sexy" fitness and figure competitions for women who are interested in weight-training but not becoming true bodybuilders, but I'm not going to start into that topic here. "Pumping Iron II: The Women" showcases the very colorful early 80s female bodybuilding scene with a passion that would be hard-pressed to be equalled by any similar film today. Everyone who I've shown this film to has been affected by it. It would be a wonderful thing if they decided to re-release the film on DVD so that a broader audience could be influenced and moved by it today.

Better script than the first one and would have been better if it followed the Ms. olympia contest intead.

Historic documentary for women's body building enthusiasts.......2005-02-05

In any athletic field, the most watched female athletes are those who have a distinct physical presence. Just being good at your sport may allow you to win medals but you won't get much popular or media attention. This historic documentary highlights why this became a huge issue back in the 1980s when women's bodybuilding just started to take off. Rachel McLish was considered the favourite for the Caesars Palace World Cup Championship. She was very toned, lightly muscled and considered very attractive by most people. Bev Francis was an Australian powerlifting champion who shocked people wherever she went because she was so muscular. Everybody agreed that she had bigger muscles than anybody else but where there was disagreement was whether it was "aesthetic" for a women to be that heavily muscled. Bev comes across as very honest, dedicated, outspoken and caring, something you would expect when you see her. Lori Bowen was a Rachel McLish fan, so much so that she actually looked a lot like her. She and her boyfriend (who is a go-go dancer) dream that she will win big. She is from an economically depressed background and you get the feeling she has struggled for whatevr she got. Carla Dunlap is very well muscled, although not as big as Bev. She comes across as a very intelligent, outspoken woman, the type you would see in a unversity classroom arguing with her professor about an issue in metaphysics. I won't tell you who wins because that would spoil the movie but let me tell you why I gave it 3 stars. It explores the issue of sexualizing women in the sport of bodybuilding and at the same time tries to educate the viewer about the sport. Although it does fairly well at both tasks, the two different lens that are applied tend to make the final product less effective. Is it about women and their objectification in bodybuilding - something that continues today ? Or is it just a story of the competitors ? Or does it try to educate viewers about bodybuilding as a sport for women. In the end although you would have learned a little about each part, you are not quite sure.

Truely inspirational!.......2003-10-19

I was so enraged at the sexism displayed by the judges and some of the other girls in this film I immediatley afterward went to the gym and hit the weights extra heavy with extra reps. Watch how Bev Francis was shafted and changed the face of womens bodybuilding forever. The feminine debate goes on...
