Who's afraid of the Big Bad Wolf? Not Jim and Jamie Dutcher. Raising a pack of gray wolves from puppies, they were able to film their growth, development, and changing behavior. Wolves at Our Door, the sequel to Wolf: Return of a Legend, explores these beautiful animals as they live in America's Northwest. Excellent footage captures the wolves playing with each other and with the Dutchers and allows us a glimpse into another world, one that's not so scary after all. You're sure to see these marvelous beasts differently after watching Wolves at Our Door. --Rob Lightner

THE DISCOVERY CHANNEL'S TOP-SELLING DOCUMENTARY! Two heart-warming, extraordinary experiences on one disc! For centuries, wolves have been characterized as bloodthirsty beasts, tormentors of ranchers and the bane of helpless livestock. Determined to overcome this misconception, filmmakers Jamie and Jim Dutcher - creators of the Emmy-winning Wolves at Our Door - spent six years in a tented camp in the wilderness of Idaho, living with a pack of wolves, listening to them and earning their trust.Living With WolvesJoin the Dutchers as they share their extraordinary experiences living with the Sawtooth Wolf Pack in this Emmy-nominated film. Exclusive footage reveals the innermost details of life in the pack - its unique social structure, how wolf cubs are raised within the group and how these powerful creatures interact with man. Overcoming forest fires, marauding mountain lions and sub-zero winters, the Dutchers and these elusive, intelligent animals share the heartwarming and unique partnership of human and predator.Wolves at Our DoorWinner of 2 Emmy Awards. This heartwarming tale follows Jim and Jamie Dutcher as they raise a pack of gray wolves and document these affectionate creatures' most intimate behaviors. By bottle-feeding them as puppies and being a constant presence in their lives, the Dutchers gained unprecedented acceptance into the world of these great canines. The wolves' reputation as savage beasts proves to be unfounded. And the Dutchers' closeness to this pack allows you to see intimate scenes of the wolves playing, courting and caring for their young.

Mankind and Wolves Can Live Together in Harmony .......2007-06-12
I first saw Jim and Jamie Dutcher in action on tv and was instantly impressed by them, the risks they took, and the sacrifices they made to raise the Sawtooth pack from pups - feeding them by hand; learning to howl with them; teaching them to hunt... but, most of all, teaching them to survive on their own so they could leave them, knowing they taught them well. As an animal lover with a great soft spot for wolves, I never tire of watching this video - or anything about the Dutchers.
This world needs more people like Jim and Jamie Dutcher.
Running time for this documentary.......2007-05-24
The correct running time for this 2 documentary DVD is 183 minutes. If you get the DVD, on the back, it will say running time: 83 minutes. This is a printing error.
I bought the DVD and this is the correct time: Living with Wolves is 133 minutes or 2 hrs and 13 minutes (See "Aspect Ratio" - although this is given only for the first film, Living with Wolves).
Wolves at our door is 50 minutes, so this gives a total of 183 minutes. The people who printed the DVD cover made an honest error and put 83 minutes total. It should be 183 minutes total (for both documentaries).
This 2 part documentary was great, but the reason I rated it 4 stars is because the narriator made one statement that I didn't like and is not true. The remark was, "The legs of wolves, fashioned by evolution..." This is stupid and untrue. Neither wolves, nor any other animal, nor human beings were brought about by evolution, but CREATED by GOD. Even Darwin who started that lie, stated on his death bed that he regretted doing so and he knew it wasn't true.
Very Good.......2007-05-23
And those who don't have a dog will know that animals do have a soul like ours
FANTASTIC.......2007-05-12
As a dog behavior enthusiast, I found this documentary to be one of THE best on wolf behavior. It gives great observations on the role of the omega and enough footage for people to see and understand this role among the wolf pack. Overall, I found it to be well edited and extremely informative.
Living With Wolves .......2007-05-06
I would highly recommend this book/dvd set to any one who has a love of dogs/wildlife. It is beautifully done and I have loaned out my dvd. Also suggest the book of photos from the same couple, it is a super coffee table size book of their still shots, of the beautiful animals they lived with. The dvd is super. They are a part of our heritage.

Very Good, Worth Your Time.......2007-07-07
A man, later joined by a woman, lives with wolves for 6 years to study them and becomes very good friends with them while letting them roam free in a pack governed by their own rules in a huge, fenced enclosure. They do all kinds of stuff and you learn so much about how wolves are organized, extremely smart, weather proof, sweet animals that are dedicated to their families above all else!
A beautiful Portrait of Wolf Society.......2007-03-21
Usually most documentaries are slow to give animals any sign that they might think, feel or have emotion. But this documentary clearly depicts wolves as loving, caring parents who devout their entire lives to family. Instead of being the murdering beasts of Little red riding hood, these gentle, curious and intelligent animals show that wolves do belong in the wild. The wolves live in semi freedom (it would be unethical to release captive wolves) and the viewers see how the pack evolves through time. We watch the pups grow, wolves die, and the love that Jim and Jamie feel for the wolves. They never try to rear them as pets or dogs but respect them as wild, intelligent animals. I strongly reccemend that the book Wolves at our Door be read for all the info about the behind the scenes parts (such as the death of the alpha female, and aggression of Ayet. I also suggest that for a full view of the authors/producers thoughts and interviews to read Living with Wolves/ The Sawtooth Pack. I suggest this movie to everyone who wants too see the real face of the wolf.
A Spectacular Documentary.......2006-12-08
This is the greatest animal documentary movie since Born Free. March of the Penguins was a huge hit, but this deserves more acclaim. While the penguin documentary was truly amazing and enlightening, this is equally so, with the added advantage of being about wolves, which most of us who love dogs can more easily relate to. This is a very well told story of how a man got very close to the wolves was practically accepted as a member of the pack. There is a bit of a love story element in how a man who lives in the wild studying wolves met and fell in love with a woman who was happy to meet him on his terms and became a part of his dream.
This documentary reveals some very interesting aspects of wolf behavior. For instance, when new young wolves are introduced to a small pack of older, larger adults, you might expect the youngsters to be accepted only after they're intimidated and put in their place in the pecking order. And yet, one of the youngsters is accepted as the alpha wolf (the leader of the pack) without a fight or even any growling, etc. It's a mystery what cues the wolves picked up on and how the larger, older alpha male peacefully accepted that he had met his younger smaller superior.
Join the Dutchers as they lead you on a heartwarming adventure that you'll never forget.
Terrific complement to WOLVES AT OUR DOOR!.......2006-11-10

Customer Reviews:
Pretty film - ugly "science".......2006-05-09
The shots of the wolves and the scenery are truly beautiful. If you are interested in that kind of eye candy, by all means get this movie. Also, if you are interested in rich people messing with wild animals to fulfill selfish dreams of touching nature, this one's for you. If, however, you want to find out about the diverse truths of wolf pack life as it happens to these amazing creatures in the wild, avoid this at all costs. I appreciate that young children enjoy watching the wolves being played with as if they are pets, but in reality, it does neither them nor the wild packs any good, as it glosses over the actual complex issue of wolves in the wild living near human livestock. Let me say that I am an advocate of wolves being restored to their rightful place in N America, but as wolf-positive as this movie is, I cannot recommend it. (For more reasons why, do a websearch for Sawtooth Pack and check out the current controversies on the state of the pack and their caretaking organization.) Or if you do see it, immediately afterwards, read Yellowstone Wolves in the Wild.
Beautiful, controversial film.......2006-02-19
While it's worth keeping in mind the controversy raised by the Dutchers' approach of raising a wolf pack from pups so they'd have no fear of the filmmakers, the results are undeniably powerful, and -- from a public relations standpoint for wolves -- undeniably positive. There aren't any other films I'm aware of that delve as deeply and richly into wolf pack structure and behavior as "Wolves at Our Door" does. Those in the wildlife preservation field may disapprove of Dutcher's methods, and there are definite controversies over some of his decisions regarding the pack, but it's hard for me not to believe that, on the balance, this portrayal of wolves -- the film itself -- didn't do good. For any wolf enthusiast (or just wolf-curious), this is worth seeking out.
While as of this writing the DVD appears to be out of print, there is a book still in print (helpfully available from Amazon as well) written by Jim Dutcher in 2003 which goes into the story in more detail, as well as touching on the story of the Sawtooth Pack after the film at the Wolf Education and Research Center in Winchester, Idaho.
Mixed Emotions.......2005-10-15
I too had mixed emotions concerning this film. This was clearly not scientific investigation or methodology right from the start, however well-intended. I questioned leaving their human scent, and creating non-aggressive, non-threatening bonds with a variety of pack members over an extended period of time.
The propensity to Anthropomorphic thinking was frightening- naming and assigning various human attributes and personality traits to nearly all of the pack. Likewise, the lack of gathering real information that might have enabled future scientists, combined with exposing the pack to humans, makes this pack tainted to the point where future investigation is nearly pointless, except to monitor the long-term negative consequences of the indiscretion.
And yet, the cinematography was astounding, the story was touching and heart-warming, the understanding gleamed was invaluable, despite controversial consequences. The story could easily become a model for the study of aggression, dominance, and social organization. Perhaps the effort was worth it, perhaps not. The makers could have at least acknowledged the dangers of their venture and held themselves accountable, as countless other scientists have done in the past.
Maybe the harm will be undone with time, as the pack diverges and memories fade, or worse, maybe this pattern of film making will be admired and emulated by many young minds to come. I am sadly reminded of treasure hunters who take extraordinary efforts to lead us to fantastic sites, only to destroy the evidence and the wealth of information it might have provided for the future.
If this seems over-critical, then ask yourself what was the price paid for this film, and who did it ultimately benefit? In the end, these wary wolves are smarter than we give them credit for, they have survived us many times over by adapting... that is the magic, and the glory of their legend.
Tom Gore, B.S., Sociology/Cultural Anthropology.
COMPLETELY UNETHICAL.......2005-09-04
This movie sets conservation issues back decades. The filmmakers are not scientists, yet present themselves as such. They give names to these wild animals, and habituate them and treat them as pets. None of the previous reviewers thought to ask themselves if this were actually beneficial for the wolves.
As a wildlife rehabilitator, I can tell you it is not. Now those wolves have become habituated to people. As they roam free throughout the woods to hunt, did the filmmakers ever think that there would be some humans out there who would harm or kill these wolves if approached by them? I would like to know what became of this pack after these selfish opportunists moved on. I am willing to bet that at least one of them was killed as a result of a human-wildlife conflict gone awry: a conflict that would not have occured if these people had not systematically destroyed the wolves' natural fear of people. Its self-righteous attitudes like those of these filmmakers that are contributing to, not preventing, the destruction of wildlife.
Instead, watch "Never Cry Wolf" to see a poignant depiction of how it is possible to love wildlife to death.
Heartfelt Documentary.......2005-05-13
I also adopted one of the Sawtooth Pack wolves when I was younger, Weyekin. I thought she seemed a lot like me, shy but sensitive. I tried to assign the names of the pack wolves to all of my friends. One was Matsi, another Amani, and another Kamots. OK, I was a little obsessed. But the bottom line is, this movie is a must-see for any wolf enthusiast, especially one interested in the Sawtooth pack. You can find updates about the wolves at
The Pack Site.
This is a truly touching and breathtaking movie!
