The films from IMAX have come to be known for their cutting-edge cinematography. They don't disappoint with The Living Sea, an Academy Award-nominated documentary exploring exotic marine locales. Using dizzying aerial and time-lapse footage, they provide underwater imagery usually accessible only while wearing fins and a mask. From heavy-surf Coast Guard drills off the coast of Oregon to jellyfish in Palau to North Atlantic humpback whales, veteran IMAX cameraman and director Greg MacGillivray takes viewers on a vivid journey into some of the world's most breathtaking environments and shows us some of the rarest and strangest marine life. Ten years from conception to finished product, this documentary's intended message is the importance of protecting the "world ocean" by displaying its wild beauty and diversity.

The Living Sea does an excellent job showcasing the more visually satisfying aspects of the sea (standout footage includes schools of jellyfish performing a graceful migratory dance and a giant cuttlefish changing brilliant colors for the purpose of camouflage), although ultimately it fails to shed much light on the hows, whys, and urgency of marine conservation. However, despite the short running time (unfortunately characteristic of IMAX productions) and a soundtrack that only true Sting fans will fully appreciate, this film proves to be a remarkable treat for the eyes and is sure to elicit heartfelt oohs and aahs from anyone who loves the sea. --Ed Noble

Winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film of 2004, The Sea Inside is a life-affirming film about a man who wishes to die. That may seem like a massive contradiction, but in the hands of director Alejandro Amenábar (Open Your Eyes, The Others) and actor Javier Bardem (Before Night Falls), this fact-based Spanish drama concerns the final days of Ramón Sampedro, the quadriplegic poet who waged a controversial campaign for his right to die. He was denied this right for 30 years, and ultimately arranged for his own assisted suicide, but this remarkable film--and Bardem's keenly intelligent performance--examines the hotly-debated issue of assisted suicide with admirable depth and humanity, just as Sampedro did until his death in 1998. For Sampedro, death was preferable to severe paralysis (he even refused to use a wheelchair), but the film does not suggest a "disposable" attitude toward disability. Instead, it's a thoughtful meditation on life and love as gifts to be cherished, and a challenging drama that begs each viewer to examine their own personal beliefs about what makes life worth living. You may not agree with Sampedro and his ultimate denial of life, but The Sea Inside will urge you to ponder how you would react under similar circumstances, and that makes it a profoundly meaningful film. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars After months.......2007-05-27

I will be writing a review for a film I have seen months ago. In the first place, what urged me to see this film was the impressiveness of the idea of two women falling in love with a man who is totally disabled. Then, while I was watching it, I had to question the line between life and death and how thin it can be sometimes. What I remember explicitly from the film now is how it presented love. It seems with this film that love is not only in what we do for the others but also in doing the things for the others which they want us to do and being able to see the world with the eyes of the others and being able to understand them. The sea inside is a beautiful film to see..

4 out of 5 stars Very Thought Provoking.......2007-05-15

I had to watch this for one of my classes and I was amazingly surprised by how wonderful the movie was. I did not mind reading the subtitles in the least. It was a very powerful, thought provoking movie that inspires discussion. It is also a very good movie to test your moral issues. The actors are amazing and the plot is well laid out, with a very artistic approach to some aspects of it. I thought some parts of the movie were slow though, but overall, I would watch this movie over again gladly.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful........2007-04-10

I avoided this movie for a long time even though it looked like "one of those movies" I'd like, because the description just sounded so dreary and depressing. Yeah, I shed a few tears, but it was a beautiful movie. I shouldn't have put it off. Give it a try.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional in Every way.......2007-04-02

I cannot say enough about this film. The subject speaks for itself, so I won't comment on that but what proves inspiring is that this is a total love story (not only between a man and a woman). The acting all around is exceptional, and Xavier Bardem, under the direction of Alejandro Amenabar, creates a very appealing Ramon Sampedro without oversentimentalizing a subject which could have otherwise been sensationalized. Combine this with a thoughtful, interesting, philosophical dialogue, that leaves the viewer mentally revisiting the film long after its conclusion.

4 out of 5 stars what is death with dignity?.......2007-01-25

I don't think this film adds anything new to the debate about so-called "death with dignity" or the right to end your own life. But it is a tender and nuanced treatment of the subject that raises the major questions and includes the major stakeholders--the legal system, a religious priest who is caricatured as moralistic and uncaring, friends, and a three-generation family that lives with and cares for the quadriplegic Ramon, who after a diving accident 26 years ago wants to end his life since, he insists, it is a life with no dignity. Ramon's brother adamantly objects: "nobody kills anyone in my house." Others are not so sure. Four women in particular loom large in the film's plot. I will not spoil Ramon's final choice, which to the film's credit is not clear until the very end. The Sea Inside is based upon a true story in Spain, and was voted Best Foreign Film for 2004. In Spanish with English subtitles.

Description

A deaf garbage collector happens upon a broken and discarded surfboard. The discovery plants in him dreams of becoming a surf champion. Encouraged by his also deaf girlfriend, he persists against all odds. Though trapped in silence, their expression of love is no less profound. A heartrending masterpiece that, as with Kitano's other films (Sonatine, Fireworks), has a sharp eye for human frailties and a love for the courage of the underdog.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Scene at the Sea........2007-05-28

This is the epitome of takeshi kitano; this is the reason to experience his work. the silent mood of his films are never more expressed than in this masterpiece about a hearing-impared garbage collector named shigeru who dreams of being a surfer. the relationship between he and his also hearing-impared girlfriend takako is decribed wonderfully by the soundtrack provided by joe hisaishi who lets the viewer understand how beautifully sad love and dreams can be. this, above all other kitano films has made me want to cry and laugh at the same time. thank you, mr kitano.

4 out of 5 stars a very decent movie but.......2007-05-09

kind of too long and too simple. there's nothing poetically beautiful of this film, but it's a very decent one. not a tear jerker, nothing too emotional. just a simple story.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting little film.......2006-11-04

Great visuals make this one a real treat, although its not in the same vein as Kitano's yakuza films. As in all of Kitano's work, here he manages to blend all elements of filmmaking: direction, scoring, editing, etc. into a compelling work that is light on plot but nonetheless captures a myriad of emotions.

2 out of 5 stars Dull.......2006-08-14

Truthfully, I found this boring. Still, it must have relaxed me because I sat there watching it not caring that there was a lot of nothing happening. A deaf garbageman finds a broken surf board. He takes it home and fixes it. When it breaks, he buys a good new one. By the end of the movie he can surf and is accepted by the other surfers.

Oh, and a deaf woman his age follows him around in the "correct" 10 paces (or how many steps behind that's proper in Japanese culture) behind him throughout the film.

Even The background music was unexciting but peaceful. New age/Windham Hill stuff.

In my opinion, it's not worth getting unless you use it to try to sleep.

4 out of 5 stars very good.......2006-02-26

maybe not as good as dolls but definitely one of the master's best works

    Description

As seen on PBS stations comes this new "living history" series about two modern families who travel back in time to experience life as it was lived in a 1937 rural Newfoundland outport fishing community. The two families, the Wheelers and the Murrays, as well as Mary Ann and Ralph two outsiders that will be living with each of households, spend two eye-opening months fishing for cod and preparing authentic meals with only the bare necessities at their disposal. Both families must learn to conserve what little food they have for the duration of the summer. The women find out that cooking takes an entire day, and the men leave to fish at dawn and don't arrive home until dusk. Everyone struggles with fatigue and exhaustion. Tensions rise as personalities clash among the group and as time runs out for the outport to meet its fishing quota. Experience the remarkable ups and downs of life in Hay Cove, New Foundland.

4 out of 5 stars Another enjoyable 'living history' program.......2007-05-06

I've waited to have this become available on Amazon. I wrote the company, no response, etc. Finally, it's available.

This series tracks two modern families who go 'back in time' to a remote area in Newfoundland. The area has been settled for years, but many changes have taken place. The old way of life revolved around fishing. That provided an excellent living for decades, but changes in the fishing stocks and the growth of corporate fishing fleets has decimated the old way of life.

This series mixes in the experiences of the families with interviews with older men and women who still remember the old ways.

As usual, there are people who really get into the swing of things, and others who just complain and moan. The teenage girl at first really misses the mall and her friends, but seems to finally see the value of family. One family views this as a chance to re-connect with family, with mixed results.

Overall, not the best I've seen (Pioneer Quest and Frontier House were more engaging), but definitely worthy of buying. It would be a good watch with the whole family, since children were included in this one.

In Episode four. It is late August. The fish are far out at sea and the weather is worsening. In Hay Cove, a cloud of tension hangs over the families. As the community recovers from a terrible fight, the men take to the seas in a desperate attempt to catch enough fish to pay the debt. But it is not the bill collector who disrupts life at Hay Cove; it is the resettlement program. The Wheelers must move out of their home, and they have no choice but to move in with the Murrays. For the final week of their summer, the families live as one while the Wheeler home is placed on a bed of logs and, inch by inch, is slowly pulled out towards the sea, symbolizing the end of an era for many in Newfoundland.
