Italian fabulist Italo Calvino observed that there are two kinds of artists--those who are prolific and successful, and the tortured geniuses, each gazing at the other in deep jealousy and admiration. The two rock bands chronicled in the documentary DiG! fall easily into this equation. On the side of the tortured geniuses is the Brian Jonestown Massacre, led by the psychedelic and volatile Anton Newcombe. Portland's the Dandy Warhols, fronted by Courtney Taylor, fulfill the role of the artists who, while unable to plumb the artistic depths of their friendly rivals, achieve a fair degree of popular acclaim (in Europe, anyway). Shot over seven years and containing some astonishingly intimate footage, the film represents a labor of love for director Ondi Timoner, who befriended, lived, and traveled with the bands. DiG! will likely be most remembered for a remarkable scene of rock and roll implosion--a show in LA's Viper Room after which the Brian Jonestown Massacre were expected to ink a record deal. Instead, the band erupted in a fist fight onstage. Among themselves.

Does it go uphill or downhill from here? Depends on your definition of the terms. While dooming their careers, the Brian Jonestown Massacre manage to crank out an insane number of self-distributed albums--including three records in a single year. Courtney Taylor and the Dandies regard the musical output of their peers worshipfully and find themselves virtually ignored stateside but huge stars across the pond. While tens of thousands of fans in Germany and the UK sing along to every word at sold-out festivals headlined by the Dandies, Newscombe leads his crew in a nine-hour set in a dingy club for an audience of ten. Throughout the film there are controlled substances imbibed, clothing shed, sitars broken, punches thrown, arrests made. Taylor performs double duty as narrator of the film, begging the question of whether to accept his assertion that he fronts "the most well-adjusted band in America" at face value. The destined-for-greater-things Joel Gion, BJM's tambourine player, is the thief of every scene in which he appears, playing Flavor Flav to Newscombe's Chuck D. For those who want even more immersion, the DVD includes the option to "zoom," or expand, various scenes--a very cool feature. Those responsible for the hilarious excesses of DiG! have made a movie worthy of being mentioned in the same breath as This Is Spinal Tap, as mixed an honor as that might be.

The second of this set's two discs is practically its own sequel. Director Ondi Timoner had 1500 hours of footage to work with, so there was plenty of good material left on the cutting-room floor that found its way onto this supplemental disc. The deleted scenes include an unintentionally haunting pre-9/11 interview on a New York rooftop with BJM's Anton Newcombe; the twin towers loom behind the singer as he attempts to justify singing about love yet engaging in violence, drawing tenuous parallels between himself and militant prophets throughout history. This, and Newcombe's delight in listening to Charles Manson's musical recordings, is about as heavy as it gets, though. Other extras include various videos by the bands, with the conspicuous absence of the Dandy Warhol's David LaChapelle-directed "Not if You Were the Last Junkie on Earth." (The omission is understandable in light of the Dandies' sour grapes over the $400,000 video.) The Where Are They Now features find various members of the bands a little older and reflective, with new families and new gigs, reminiscing fondly on the seven years spent under Timoner's watchful spycam. As is the case with the film proper, the mood picks up whenever Joel Gion appears. When is this guy going to get his own talk show? For fans of Timoner's commentary on disc 1 there is--get this--footage of the director and her partners recording that commentary. Why there's no footage of Timoner watching and commenting on the footage of herself recording the commentary is anyone's guess. --Ryan Boudinot

The human beings are almost as interesting as the title character in this surprisingly subtle and engaging film about the cross-country adventures of a smart-mouthed parrot. As director John Roberts deploys the footage, the bird becomes a vivid personality; every quizzical twist of his head is oddly expressive. The people who interact with Paulie are a quirky and interesting bunch as well, and the casting is topnotch: Tony Shalhoub (The Siege) as a Russian immigrant janitor, Cheech Marin as an open-hearted mariachi musician, and Gena Rowlands as a widowed painter in a footloose Winnebago--all are vividly eccentric individuals, memorable in their own right. There are some tired swipes at the cold-blooded meanies of Big Science (beady-eyed researcher Bruce Davison has Paulie clapped in irons), but for the most part the film respects the complexity of everyone's motivations, and that's virtually unheard of in today's Hollywood, even in films supposedly designed for grownups. --David Chute
Customer Reviews:
Great Service.......2007-05-19
I received my DVD really quick from sender. I will use their service again.
Pauli.......2007-05-18
This is just a delightful and inspring family movie. The actors all support the plot. The lessons are well illustrated. The concern for animals is strong without being dogmatic. Just a great 2 hours of enjoyment.
A movie I could send to my granddaughter!.......2007-05-17
Funny, intelligent, warm and touching - and a movie that wouldn't embarrass me if I were watching it with my 12 year old granddaughter. I'm mailing it to her immediately (she lives out-of-town). I really enjoyed this movie and I would recommend it to anyone, any age. It has something for everyone in it.
I wish Hollywood would come out with more movies like this one. The actors are great and natural. The birds and animals in this movie are amazing.
A great family movie!.......2007-05-14
"Paulie" is a sweet movie and perfert for a family video night! The parrot tells such a wonderful story of love, loss, trust - and the breaking thereof - that there are many 'moral of the story' moments! Gena Rowlands is wonderful in showing that no matter the age, or circumstance, we all have adventure within us! It may be hidden under fear and friends (in this case, Paulie) can help us 'stretch our wings'. The man who stars in this, currently seen on the t.v. show "Monk", did a wonderful job in his intent listening and resolve to help this bird - his friend. I would highly recommend this movie to anyone who wants to spend an evening just 'kicking back' and enjoying a good story.
Paulie.......2007-04-23
I am a parrot owner, and loved the movie. Even non-bird fanatics will enjoy this family movie. It's captivating, touching, and children and adults can equally relate to having learning difficulties while growing up, having a pet as your best friend, to losing loved ones and romantic relationships that didn't happen as we had hoped. Throughout all of Paulie's adventures with the different characters in the movie, you're always rooting for Paulie and that he'll find his "Marie", and the ending leaves you with a "feel good" feeling. I highly recommend this to anyone, and especially bird lovers. It made me look at my parrot(whose been with me for 28 years) with a renewed sense of wonder and respect for her intelligence and wondering what's she's thinking even though she doesn't talk like Paulie!

Hate to say it, but disappointing..........2007-07-05
I should first say that I am not a mother and I do not have small children. However, I have always been fascinated by children's programming that cleverly and simultaneously caters to the attention of adults.
I purchased this DVD for a toddler friend of ours who knows more about different types of trucks and machinery than the average adult. The many positive reviews on Amazon, along with the Grammy-winning songwriter involved in this video, led me to think this DVD would be something the adults in this house would enjoy watching as much as their child. I was so disappointed to hear that the "I Dig Dirt" song was simply "Frère Jacques" with different words, and I was surprised that there are only a couple of trucks/machines covered in this DVD.
Even adults like this.......2007-06-27
This is interesting both for an young child and adult. We sing along with the music and the words to the songs, on the screen, help with word recognition. But the gigantic diggers and trucks working in those mines fascinate kids. Really worth going through the promo at the beginning.
Great Call.......2007-06-14
I would recommend this video to anyone that has a little boy. The machines are amazing. As a parent it's a fun video because the magnitude of the diggers is pretty facinating. Plus - he now sings the song whenever he sees a digger of any sort. It's Barney with testosterone.
Favorite DVD Video.......2007-03-09
Our 2 year old grandson loves diggers and this video is watched over and over. He often sings the Digger song throughout the day. For the adults in the family watching this video over and over at 6:30 in the morning can be a little much. But it gives early morning quiet time. This video is a must for any child who loves diggers. It is a much requested DVD.
Domenic.......2007-01-17
My 2 1/2 yr old grandson, Domenic,so loved this DVD that he would play it over and over again. While we adults found it interesting, we were not sure it was oriented to such a young child, but Dom would view it intently and after a few times he hurried over to his toybox, pulled out a hardhat and now wears it every time he watches! However, he re-named this DVD "big messy" in babytalk!

Customer Reviews:
So you wanna be a rock and roll star...essential .......2007-06-18
My opinion: if you are thinking about starting a rock band, WATCH THIS FILM. This is how it is. I think that Spinal Tap was a great parody, but this is riveting to watch.
It's great they were able to get as much footage as they did over the amount of time they did it in, and left all the warts and bumps and scrapes in. You needed the 7 years to make the story out of it. You see why a lot of bands don't make it... some aren't as volatile as BJM were, but they're not that far off.
You see what "the industry" is like and their POV is on there. You see what they have to deal with on their end.... the indie and major label POVs both represented.
You see egos, big egos. Drugs. Lots of drugs. Living out of the van, promoting... gigs falling apart, gigs going great. The hecklers in the audience trying to give Anton a meltdown..it's a joke by the end. It's almost like you pay to see how long it takes before he storms off. Changes in band personnel, watching people come and go...quitting or getting fired. To have that stuff on film is great.
The extras on the DVD are definitely worth checking out.
Best rockumentary EVER!.......2007-01-27
I bought this immediately after watching it on DVD. It's a got- to- have item for music lovers, even if yu don't know who the Hell the bands are. It's like watching a train wreck in slo-mo as Anton drives both fellow band members and the Dandy Warhols away from him with his crazy behavior. I've now watched it several times and still get a kick out it, as have everyone that I've loaned it to. I even bought the Tepid Peppermint Wonderland collection by BJTM for myself to have more of their music. I gave them both to my mate in Scotland for Xmas, too and he was blown away by the film. The director worked on this for about 7 years and won several awards for it. A hell of alot better than the We Rock Econo crap on the Minutemen! At least try to rent a copy of it to watch and have a few friends over.
dysfunction as self-destruction.......2007-01-25
A friend of mine once observed, partly from personal experience, that behind every great person there often lay a trail of human wreckage. In this energetic documentary about two 1960s-revivalist rock music groups--the Brian Jonestown Massacre led by Anton Newcombe, and the Dandy Warhols led by Courtney Taylor--that dictum proves true. Taken from over 2,000 hours of original footage, the resulting 107 minutes take you on the scene and behind the scenes of the bands, record executives, fans, roadies, drug binges, police arrests, and concerts across the United States, Europe and Japan. Newcombe in particular is a tragic mix of manic energy, musical genius, and abusive dysfunction. I could hardly believe it when the end of the film indicated he was still alive and had independently produced twelve CDs (no one would work with him). "Linkouts" on the main DVD allow you to view extended deleted scenes. This is a great film to view if you feel, like I sometimes do, that you are "out of it" when it comes to the contemporary rock music scene.
DiG A HOLE & throw this piece of poop in..........2006-12-24
These bands are talented revivalists, but of little interest otherwise. Only kids too young to remember better will think this is any good. And others...well I guess they just can't see beyond the impotency of the music and why it's no longer vital anymore.
What a deluded dweeb that BJTM leader is...it's one thing to believe in your own abilities. But to degrade everyone around you and then yourself in order to spit out some hackneyed notion of 'revolutionary' music is retarded.
The most amazing thing about this film is that anyone thought it was a good idea to film it.
ANTON IS GOD.......2006-12-03
The Brian Jonestown Massacre are the best band you've never heard of. I've always liked them from the beginning and have talked to Anton Newcombe after several shows. He is just the most ordinary, coolest guy ever, except don't mess with him because he don't take lip. He's also got a very sensitive side also and just wants everyone to listen to his music and start a sort of peaceful revolution, just like in the 60's when they used to make music that was halfway as good as this. He's like ALL-IN-ONE, just like God. Everything he says is like scripture, especailly that thing about Eric clapton's baby-he sucks!!! LOL. All you people are idiots for not listening to this band becasue you're too busy listening to hip-hop crap. VIVA LA UNDERGROUND!!!
If you just got into Anton because of D!G, you're just a poseur. I heard of them like back in 2003, so there!

Throw "Sweet Insanity", "Madhouse" and "See No Evil" into a blender and pour out "Boo!".......2007-02-03
For a straight-to-dvd, this is not a bad horror movie. It is somewhere between "Sweet Insanity", "Madhouse" and "See No Evil". The acting is pretty bad, but it doesn't detract too much from the story. There are some good special effects here and there, along with some genuine scary parts.
The story takes too long to move along and gets confusing when it goes too many places at once. This is especially true towards the end. Trish Coren reminded me a little bit of Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde, which probably isn't the best thing for a horror movie. But, she's cute and with some acting lessons could go places. The same is not true of the rest of the cast. Even flawed, it's worth a rental.
Pretty good ghost story.......2006-12-26
The only things in the negative was that some of the acting wasn't that great, and the ending was a little forced. But, for a low budget film, they did an excellent job in making it creepy. The special effects were top notch. There are a few scares throughout that made me jump or squirm. This one is worth yout time and $$
Different horror movie.......2006-11-30
I really liked this movie. Not only is it different in the story, but it takes place in a real psychiatric hospital that is haunted. Look up the "Linda Vista Hospital" where the movie is filmed on the net. It is great!! Ok, the movie did start out a little corney and slow, but it really took of in the middle and the end. Great story and good acting!!! Highly recommended!!!
Awful.......2006-10-24
BOO has to be the worst horror movie I have seen in a long time. Poorly conceived, badly acted (and, boy, is the acting BAD), atrociously written, sloppily directed and lacking anything approaching a genuine sense of atmosphere, this film has virtually nothing to recommend it. There are occasional (VERY occasional) glimpses of the film that might have been, but every opportunity is wasted and all we're left with is ninety tedious minutes of teenage histrionics and unnecessary (and unconvincing) gore. Even some of the potentially disturbing imagery (not to mention the presence of Dee Wallace Stone - oh, how careers can plummet!) cannot save it. The one thought I came away with at the end is 'How do people with so little talent and aptitude actually get the opportunity and funding to make a film like this in the first place?' I guess that's one of life's more baffling mysteries, that and the assumption on the part of film makers that horror fans will accept any old rubbish. Avoid this film like the plague. It is truly, truly dreadful.
A Sad Mess Filled With Missed Opportunities & Lots Of Potential.......2006-10-22
I give this hack job the extra star for the fact that it had some very creepy visuals a handful of jumpy scares & a good idea for a story. How sad is it though when that kind of potential can't crutch the horrible outcome, wich resides in plot-hole central USA,home of the university of bad acting & laughable endings(UBALE). Oh man! Horror fans! "BOO" could have been an excellent new low-budget horror flick if it had a tighter script with a much better ending & included some half decent actors who actually had a grip on there character's. All & all what we are left with is an all over the place mess with some good visuals & scares. So many missed opportunities & so much potential lost. What a sad waste!

Scruffty's Big Dig
Customer Reviews:
A Really Cute DVD - a review of "Bob the Builder - Dig! Lift! Haul!".......2006-12-01
This is a cute BTB DVD that has not only the regulars (Bob, Wendy, Spud, and the Crew) but many of the other favorite characters including Farmer Pickles, Mr. Beasley, and that tea making Mrs. Potts. There is also Scruffty the dog, and some adorable mice and bunnies!
In the first story, "Scruffty's Big Dig", Scruffty the dog manages to fall into a bunny hole and get stuck. Muck passes by and gets spooked by Scruffty's howling, but it all works out in the end when Bob and the crew solve the mystery and save Scruffty.
The second story, "Bob's Boots", has Bob breaking in new boots. The boots squeak and attract mice, which as we all know Lofty does not like. Lofty ends up running for home, followed by Bob, followed by the mice -- which Bob doesn't realize are there. Bob thinks Lofty is imagining that there are mice. All of this in interweaved with a sub-plot wherein Spud takes Bob's lunch by accident. The mice end up chasing Spud because he gave them some crumbs.
In the third story, "Mr. Beasley's Do-It-Yourself Disaster", Bob is hired to build a garden shed, while Wendy is busy painting Mrs. Pott's fence. Chaos ensues when Bob gets diverted from the shed work to do a quick roof repair for Mr. Dixon. Bob and Wendy keep missing one another; and Mr. Beasley begins the project himself, working under the misguided notion that he can use tools.
Wendy shows up to wonder what is wrong with Bob that the structure looks so crooked. She repairs it and it's actually pretty funny when Bob and Mr. Beasley actually think Mr. B did the work.
The fourth story, "Spud Lends A Hand", is about the installation of a sprinkler system for Farmer Pickles. Everything goes fine until Spud 'lends a hand' and advises the crew on how to finish the installation of a rain-tank. Chaos results when Spud ends up giving advice to the Lofty and the guys. The tank breaks loose and not only rolls down hill, but destroys Wendy's gift which is a sailboat. Bob ends up saving the day when he takes the remains of Wendy's sail boat and turns it into a motor boat.
The final story is "Dizzy's Crazy Paving". It's my favorite because it has Wendy in a 'if you have lemons, make lemonade' kind of situation. Mrs. Pott's wants a new sidewalk and everything starts out fine until too much fooling around leaves the square pavers that they were going to use, broken up. Wendy solves the problem by making a sort of crazy quilt sidewalk with the colorful tiles.
The stories are linked by the mischief, humor, and creativity.
Five Stars (for a Bob the Builder DVD). Five classic Bob stories on this one. My son loves this DVD and can watch it over and over. Sometimes he will focus on what Bob is doing, and other times the equipment, and yet other times the little animals that in the stories: bunnies, dog, cat, bird, mice. Great fair for rainy days.

Customer Reviews:
Both Mortensen's and Keitel's fill their roles quite well, but that's all.......2007-03-08
THE YOUNG AMERICANS, released 1993, is a picture whose script
appears to have been written by a 14 year old, considering the
social circle of the protagonists, the title of the movie itself,
and the simplicity of the story. Unfortunately, those facts didn't
turn out to be trumps for the picture.
The strong point, is Harvey Keitel, who brings natural charisma and
realism to the filming, playing a police detective on loan to
Interpol (international enforcement) tracking down a weapons
trafficker, played amusingly by the sometimes enigmatic star Viggo
Mortensen.
The lesson of this movie, is difficult to surmise, considering the
confused, fatuous plot. Perhaps it is to bring patience to the
segment of the population who is over 21, with regards to those
younger than that age bracket, with a secondary goal bring to have
the juvenile element reflect on the serious consequences of taking
the message contained in music, pop culture, and TV at face value,
and agreeing to be corrupted by criminal elements in society.
The 3 major annoyances of this work, was first, the soundtrack. The
audio level needlessly and relentlessly ranged from deafeningly loud
(in the sequences filmed in the night club, and for the football
match), to the inaudibel whispered lines uttered by the actors.
Clearly, no effort was done to bring a consistent sound level
throughout the movie.
The next weakness, is the fact that the plot perhaps is so thin,
empty, and the morality of the movie so hollow, that many sequences
go on and on, for many minutes. Often, it appears the cameras are
rolling to fill up movie frames, with the audience watching the time
pass by, in expectation of actiont that often is never there.
Lastly, the soundtrack wasn't ideal. The choice of the songs, the
musical accompaniment showed effort and thought, but consistently
missed the mark, and seemed inappropriate or distracting to the
underlying action and story.
Its strength, mostly stemming from Mortensen's and Keitel's dual
efforts in carrying this picture to fruition. There's also a
quasi-Matt Damon twin who fills his role quite well.
With no suspense whatsoever, no thrill aspect maintained over 90
minutes, due to a lack of script, the end result is a movie worth
1.5 stars.
Other positive aspects, in addition to the leading actors, are the
filming locations in England, seen in the daytime, which are
interesting in themselves. Clearly, not enough thought, effort was
brought into boosting those weaker elements that otherwise, could
have helped this movie succeed in the non-European markets.
Moody, Moralistic, Violent and Loud.......2006-06-21
Harvey Keitel stars as a FBI agent in this dark and death-filled tale of gangs in London. The premise is a simple one, one that we've seen in many other mob movies. The older, established mobsters have a code of honor and try to do things the proper way. The rash, up and coming punks care nothing for honor and just want quick cash and drugs. In this case, it's an American - Carl Frazer (played by Viggo Mortensen) who is causing the trouble. The FBI has sent John Harris (Keitel) to help the London police force to shut him down.
Carl is a truly psychotic drug / arms dealer who loves to gather up lost but innocent young men, tell them that they are special, and then turn them into cold blooded killers. Carl gets his thrills from corrupting the virtuous. There are many comments throughout the movie - both by the cops and the old time mobsters - about how these young, sweet kids are having their lives destroyed by drugs and the lure of cash. In one scene, an old mob guy is attacked by two of these 'kids' who are trying to kill him. When he turns the tables on them, he refuses to shoot them - he just tells them to leave him alone.
I admit that I have a bit of an issue with this constant referring to the adult men as "kids" - they appear to be in their early 20s, they are out drinking, working, having lives. It's always tragic when someone is led astray, but to call them helpless "boys" or "kids" is marginalizing their maturity, in my mind. Maybe if they'd made the boys in the movie in the 13-15 age range it would have played better with me.
In any case, the movie is a little cardboardy. You have the crooked cops. Keitel is the hard-FBI-guy-who-is-still-tender. The mob guy is rough but tender too. Viggo is over the top as the psycho who smashes a prostitute's face in at a party because she was snorting coke instead of doing her job. His main lines and action only let him show 'moralless insanity' without many shades of anything else. Keitel got a lot of good moments and depth in his role, being tough with the bad guys, really caring about the innocent, and wrapped up in knots by his home life. Another great role was provided to Craig Kelly - he was great as the young man (oops I mean helpless boy) who first tries to avoid getting sucked into the situation, but finally has to make some hard decisions.
On the violence end, there was a lot of it. There was also a lot of loud clubbing, meaning that either your ears are being blown out by the noise or you're missing the soft dialogue because it's muddled. I usually don't have any issues at all with sound balance on a DVD so I really did find it odd how the mix was done here. Maybe that was part of the intention - to make you feel like you didn't know what was going on and were immersed in this throbbing London scene.
A great movie to watch once - either rental or on TV - before you decide if you want to actually own it.
The Young Americans.......2005-07-07
I am a Viggoholic so for my tastes there wasn't enough Viggo in the movie.
An American in London.......2000-07-16
There is a strange ambiance in this movie, as if we were dealing with spies in an Cold War era..You would expect Keitel's character to walk in the next Cafe Rouge to meet a Russian couple for dinner and ...well, conversation...Dave Arnold's music is just great, adding the necessary eerie side to the foggy London streets on which our DEA man chases his prey. Great work altogether, and a must see for Americans in Europe...
This Is A Great Film Starring A Great Actor.......1999-11-19
I caught this movie on TV one Saturday afternoon while flipping through the Channels. Seeing Harvey Keitel got my attention but the movie itself kept it. It's a really good movie. I was suprised that I hadn't heard of it before. Check it out. Its a great deal especially at the price Amazon offers it for.
