The subtitle couldn't be more accurate: A History of the B-Boy is a comprehensive look at the world's "freshest kids." This lively documentary isn't about hip-hop or hip-hop culture as much as about an integral part of that culture. B-boys are defined, variously, as "breakboys" (the original term) and "breakdancers" (the more widely known one). These "kids," many now in their 30s, helped to shape hip-hop's look and spread its gospel. The narrative traces their evolution from the South Bronx 1970s to media-crazed 1980s--when they were featured in movies from Wild Style to Flashdance--to today, as the phenomenon has returned to the underground while remaining as popular as ever (as exemplified by footage from Germany, Japan, etc.). The old and new school are on hand to explain and to praise the b-boy; everyone from rappers like KRS-One and Mos Def to breakers like Crazy Legs and Ken Swift. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

3 out of 5 stars Good, but falls short in key areas........2007-07-01

The beginnings of bboying are covered very well with all the key players, but the international scene (which is at least as big as America's) gets a really superficial pass, as does the modern resurgence. The history of bboying should also include the present which is poorly represented without really much video or talk of the present greats. If the movie was "The Freshest Kids - The Origins of the B-Boy", it would be a 5-star film, but it falls short on giving a complete history.

4 out of 5 stars Hip Hop 101.......2007-03-08

This is a great way to learn about the history of Hip Hop and The "B-Boy". I grew up listening to Hip Hop ( 1984 thru 1995 ). This DVD was accurate, educational and entertaining. True to what real Hip Hop and B-Boys are all about!!

5 out of 5 stars This video is so dope! .......2007-02-07

I am a hardcore breakdancer and poplocker and this video totally broke down the history of all these styles. I feel like a professor now. For those who wanna take it past this and learn to actually dance like this, I highly recommend How To Do The Robot - Breakdance Instructional DVD or Top 20 Breakdance Moves on Amazon. They are the cream of the crop.

But you NEED this video if you are into breakdancing or hip-hop in general. This and Scratch are mandatory.

5 out of 5 stars The freshest kids, the freshest documentary.......2007-01-12

Beautiful explanation of the B-Boying experience. Gives a great background not only on the dancing, but also music, historical, and other aspects of the art of b-boying. You MUST get this!

5 out of 5 stars Good Hip-Hop Film........2006-11-10

This film was dope, a must see for anyone who is curious about Hip-Hop culture, or for those that need to know the History. A very informative documentary, an essential in any hip-hop collection.
