The definitive surf movie, this 1966 documentary by Bruce Brown is beautifully shot and thrilling to see in its portrait of youthful freedom on the world's shores. Brown followed two surfers around the globe in their quest for the perfect wave, finding it eventually on a remote beach far from home. The narration by "Big Kahuna Brown" cuts through the reverence a bit, being cheeky in tone. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars You don't have to surf to like this movie.......2007-03-06

I'm not a surfer. In fact, I don't think I've ever toughed a surfboard.
But I do like the BEACH BOYS!! Anyway, the point is; you don't have to surf to enyjoy this film. I've always been interested in the sport but never got involved. Sort of an armchair surfer, I guess. This is a great film and very exciting to watch. Bruce Brown did an amazing job and the overall look of the film is great. Following the two young surfers around the world in search of the perfect wave is an interesting concept and was well executed. The scenery is great, the surfing scenes are great, and I really enjoyed this movie. So, if you are a surfer,or, like me, just a spectator, you will like ENDLESS SUMMER. I know, I'll put a TV in my bathroom, splash around in the tub and watch ENDLESS SUMMER II tonight.

5 out of 5 stars Return to sunnier days!.......2007-02-17

This movie plays just as well as when it came out. A cold, snowy New England winter faded from my mind as I was transported around the world and back in time to a simpler era. The photography is spectacular and the talent of the surfers is without question. What a great escape! I'll be watching it a lot this winter and for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars The Ageless Summer.......2007-02-01

It was a fantastic movie when it was first released and it is still just as good. Great photography, good narrative. Makes me long for the summer days I used to spend on the beach at Santa Cruz.

5 out of 5 stars Im Might Not Be A Surfer..........2007-01-17

I Might Not Be A Surfer But I Really Like This Movie. I Thought It Was Gona Be One Of The Worst Things I'll Ever Buy But I Really Gotta Say This Movie Is One Of My Top 10 Favorite Movies In General.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Miss This Classic!.......2006-11-05

I hadn't seen Endless Summer since it was first released in theaters...a long time ago. WOW...Did it bring me back. The music, the filming: top notch and captivating. A trip down Memory Lane when life was simpler and my madras shorts weren't old-school.

Twenty-eight years after directing the hit documentary The Endless Summer, Bruce Brown went on a similar quest with two surfers to find the perfect wave. With a bigger budget and more sophistication in the production, this sequel is even more spectacular. What is lost in innocence--which The Endless Summer was rich in--is made up for in stunning looks at pristine beaches on exotic and even unlikely (for example, Alaska) shores. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars This film will bring back memories of your youth, even if you've never surfed.......2007-06-13

This film follows a meandering path of a few dudes attempting to get "stoked" while riding waves on various continents. It combines surfing, humor, nature, beauty, and cool. You might even get stoked while watching it & take a trip down the beach. The film rarely takes itself seriously and instead, gives a light side of surfing entertainment. It's my favorite surf film (I have about a dozen).

Rent or buy this film for the content, not the quality. If the quality was there it would rate as 5+ stars.

Please note; don't waste your time or money on another film called "The Endless Summer Revisited". It's a discredit to have "Revisited" associated with this film.

5 out of 5 stars Surf Classics.......2007-04-02

Simply the most classic surf video ever!
Certainly a "must have" for any respectful surfer

5 out of 5 stars greatest surfing documentary of all time.......2007-01-29

this is perhaps the greatest surfing documentary of all time. i thought no one could top the endless summer I, but clearly i was wrong.

4 out of 5 stars Another Classic.......2007-01-04

Endless Summer II joins its predecessor in the "Classic Surf" movie genre. It's not quite as good as the original or I'd have given it 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars The endless wave .......2007-04-08

The Endless Summer Collection is great. Being a surfer for 20 yrs. There are few movies/documentries out there that capture the pure eurphoric state of mind surfing gives and Bruce Brown hit the bulls eye with Endless Summer and Endless Summer 2. Iv had the pleasure meeting Robert August and "Wingnut" who both are featured in the collection. Now if only i could get the Astrodeck guys to put the Wave Worrior series on DVD i would have my ultimate collection.

5 out of 5 stars Classics you cannot miss . . ........2004-06-01

These films are like the 80's movies that made everything that mattered happen. Ferris, Goonies, Breakfast Club, etc . . . except they are surfing classics, epic documentaries if you will.

**Bruce Brown has the classic surfer aesthetic, and narrates each film poignantly and humorously.

Endless Summer 1 is the classic older film, paced a little more slowly and fun-lovingly. It sets a great preface to Endless 2, an incredible multi-hemisphere journey.

Both films have excellent cinematography as well as dialogue and interplay between characters. Endless 2 is as goofily trivial as it is deep, as beautiful as it is mundane. . .

There are gorgeous scenery shots that do Cape Town, Indonesia, Figi, (my fav) and Alaska, justice as incredible places not only to surf, but also to just be.

Our two fascinating and yin and yang protagonists, 1, a Pat O'Connell gives suffusively satisfying short board licks, and 2, a. wing-nut supplies all of the long board smoothness to coalesce.

Five stars, in my to 25 of all time. A truly beautiful film made by those who love life.

2 out of 5 stars Incomplete (where is Hynson?) and not much new material.......2003-07-14

Quick review: Dana Brown opens this documentary by describing it as (paraphrased) "another chance to rip off the public," and he's somewhat right. "The Endless Summer Revisited" is mostly a series of interviews of the original filmmakers, promoters, and one of the stars of "The Endless Summer" and it doesn't reveal a whole lot that wasn't covered during the Surfer's Journal series on surf movies. I can't recommend buying this, but it might be worth a rental if you can find a copy.

More details: "The Endless Summer Revisited" tells the story of the filming and distribution of the original "Endless Summer" as well as a little bit about its sequel. It runs chronologically, startingwith some early footage of Bruce Brown as a surfer and then progressing forward. Interviews shot on video are mostly of Bruce Brown, Dana Brown, and Robert August, with appearances by Greg Noll, Steve Pezman, Dale Velzy, Hobie Alter, Nat Young, Wingnut, Pat O'Connell, and some other old guys whose names I don't recall.

I got a few chuckles from Noll taking digs at Brown whenever he could get a chance, and there was some interesting grainy footage here and there from the original film that I hadn't seen before. They show a little bit of from-shore shots of the filming of the water camera footage, and Brown tells the real story of how Cape St. Francis was discovered by Mike Hynson. Hynson, by the way, is not interviewed at all for this film. The lack of his perspective is a major gap. The film winds up with details that I hadn't heard before of how they found a distributor for "The Endless Summer," including taking the film to Kansas during a snowstorm to prove that it could be shown to a wider audience. By the time they get to the sequel, the makers of "Endless Summer Revisited" have run out of gas, and don't have much to say other than "it's the same thing only better." There's not much additional footage at all from that film, which is disappointing since they must have a lot of it in the can.

Summary: Don't buy it, rent it if you're interested in surf media history.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time on Revisited.......2002-12-22

Endless Summer Revisited is not worth the time you spend watching it, not to mention your wasted money buying/renting it. Instead, try Endless Summer II: you'll watch it several times and enjoy it each time.

5 out of 5 stars It Got Better.......2002-10-22

I had seen "The Endless Summer" (TES) and was fully expecting "The Endless Summer Revisited" (TESR) not to live up to it, if only for the fact that it was not a follow up to the original TES or "The Endless Summer II" (TES2). This was more of a documentary of how they made TES, TES2 and some other surfing during that timeframe. When it started, I was fully prepared for 2 stars. However, many of the interviews led me to 3 stars. Some of the new surfing footage led me to 4 stars. Then, with footage from TES2 (which is not available on DVD yet), I had to go with 5 stars. It is not the same as TES, so if you expect that, it will be disappointed. But, if you want to know more of the surfer life, then TESR is worth it. I especially liked them pointing out that it is NOT like "Beach Blanket Bingo" or other silly movies where they just throw sex into the mix. Sure, hormones are prevalent, especially when young, but that goes out the window when riding waves. I was glad that they pointed that out and that they followed it in the films.

1 out of 5 stars RIP OFF.......2001-07-09

IF YOU LIKE HOME MOVIES YOU MAY LIKE THIS, NO NEED TO BUY THIS IF YOU HAVE THE ENDLESS SUMMER, I SUGGEST WAITING FOR ENDLESS SUMMER 2 ON DVD.

3 out of 5 stars If you like Bruce then this is for you........2000-08-16

This is a very nostalgic look back at when Bruce Brown started making moviesin the 50's until he finished with Endless Summer 2. There are several great cameos by Dave Velzy, Greg Noll, and Robert August(just to name a few) who tell the viewer about their experiences with Brown and the movies they made together. It unfortunatley is only 70 minutes long. It has great out takes from ES and ES 2 and a short blooper series that is classic. I only gave it 3 stars because it didn't have enough surfing and it wasn't long enough.
