Promises presents a powerful portrait of seven Palestinian and Israeli children who live in and around Jerusalem. As filmmaker B.Z. Goldberg, who was raised in Israel, notes, "They live no more than 20 minutes from each other, but they are each growing up in very separate worlds." The children include Mahmoud, Shlomo, Sanabel, Faraj, Moishe, and twins Yarko and Daniel. With the exception of the latter, all are religious (the twins are the grandchildren of a Holocaust survivor). Most have strong political beliefs and have seen their share of tragedy--Faraj's friend was killed in front of him--but as the film makes clear, they're also kids. They like to watch TV, hold burping contests, and compete in sports (Faraj is a runner, Yarko and Daniel play volleyball). Promises doesn't attempt to explain them, but lets the kids speak for themselves. The results are funny, sad, and ultimately quite profound. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Thoughtful and moving.......2007-04-04
Even though this is not a current film, its message is clear and moving and the additional web sites offer strong historical background.
Great Film about Israeli-Palestine Issue.......2007-03-27
I highly recommend this film. It is a good teaching tool. I teach in US and in Israel with Jewish and Arab students. Everyone should see, discuss and contemplate this film.
Promises: a great teaching tool.......2007-03-21
I teach social studies to seventh graders in Massachusetts. This movie is a great way to teach about the conflict in Israel. Although it is getting a bit dated (1997-2000). It does a great job of showing the conflict through the eyes of 7 children. Despite the sub-titles, my students are attentive and by the end of the movie have a much better understanding of the conflict.
impossible to overrate.......2007-01-25
If you have ever wondered how to gain at least some understanding of the convoluted, protracted and intractable Israeli-Palestinian conflict, watch this documentary film. You will learn its basic history, but perhaps more importantly you will learn about the deeply human impulses that drive that history, human impulses as they are experienced and narrated by seven children interviewed for this film project--Israeli and Palestinian, extremist and conciliatory, passive observers and political militants, boys and girls. A child's perspective, it turns out, touches the viewer very deeply, for these kids have siblings who have been killed and parents jailed without formal charges. In an especially moving sequence, the children meet together in an exchange of food, games, friendship, opinions, tears, and feelings of both hope and futility. The final frames show an Arab mother and a Jewish father in a maternity ward standing next to each other, each embracing their newborn baby. The producers edited over 170 hours of original interviews down to 107 minutes for this incredible film. In Arabic, Hebrew, and English, with English subtitles.
Extremely Thought Provoking,I Came To Love ALL The Kids!.......2006-12-23
This film has the most balanced view that I have yet seen on the Palestinian/Israli conflict. Now if the same thing could only be done with adults as the main characters as well! There were a couple hard-nosed,close-minded "jerks" on both sides who had no interest in meeting, but I really came to love "all" the kids, Palestinian and Jew, who were interested and willing to meet. I got choked up and teary-eyed several times while watching. It is sad, sweet, and incredibly well done. It really grabs you from the start and you really get to know and like the main characters, and dislike the jerks! So you get to see good-hearted kids from both sides, and also the extremists from both sides.
I was shocked in watching this, and "Death In Gaza", how "slummy" the Palestinian areas are! I must admit after reading The U.S. is the single largest contributor of assistance to the Palestinian people, a fact not widely known. The U.S. has been giving an average of about $85 million per year in foreign aid to the Palestinians since the signing of the Oslo Accords in 1993. Most of the aid has been channeled through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to contractors and private voluntary organizations. (Outside of regular foreign aid, the U.S. has provided funds to the United Nations Relief and Work Agency (UNRWA) since 1950 and is also the largest donor to this U.N. program for Palestinian refugees.)On top of all the other foreign-aid they get from other donors, that they live in such slums!I can't help but wonder what they do with all that money? I mean they don't have to worry about suicide bombers coming into their areas,so why don't they clean the place up,for pity's sake?
I cannot help but feel they do not HAVE to live in such conditions. The absolute, complete lack of any evidence of anyone even trying to improve their living conditions, really struck me. It was just so glaringly obvious, that those thoughts would just not be silenced while I watched.
It seems they are chronic complainers who can only blame others for their plight, rather than even attempt to improve things for themselves. They have lived in those slums for how long now? My city has projects complexes that have residents who at least clean up around the places and plant flowers and they look "upscale" compared to what I have seen of Palestine! And they don't even get money handed to them to help, either.
So this film raised some questions for me,but it really is a great film, and the DVD extras were wonderful as well, such as the updates on the kids. One could only wish that every Arab and Israli would see it. I ended up agreeing with points from both sides! However, one can't miss that the Palestinians have no desire for a seperate Palestinian state, they just want all of Israel back!

Customer Reviews:
Nude Nostalgia.......2007-06-10
When I was a little boy I found my dad's Playboy issue where Jayne Mansfield appeared nude in a pictorial about a movie she was filming. The title was "Promises, Promises" and it never played here, in Mexico, due to censorship. The memory stayed within me and now, quite older, I could get the film and notice that it's a low budget comedy that exploited Mansfield's sex appeal and her magnificent body. Nothing much to it, except that it brings back memories about an era where we were naïve. It's fun and one gets to see a female legend of the fifties.
reviving a true pin-up.......2006-10-14
Up to the early sixties of the 20th century, Atlantic passenger-transport was largely serviced by luxury cruise ships - provided you had the cash to afford their luxury. As airplanes took over, this means of transport has almost entirely vanished by now.
These cruise-ships live on for their romantic appeal. As an Atlantic crossing lasted for a few weeks, with nothing to do while aboard, they offered plenty of opportunity for all sorts of entertainment - numerous extramarital affairs included.
This setting left us with an entire score of comedy-movies. Marilyn Monroe did her 'Gentlemen prefer Blondes', young Brigitte Bardot starred in 'Doctor at Sea'. And 'Promises! Promises!' offers a vehicle for Jayne Mansfield.
To our standards, 'Promises!' is a forgettable movie - except for Mansfield's impressive sex appeal. This DVD also teaches us, that Hugh Hefner's Playboy derived a memorable photo-shoot from it.
So reviving Jayne Mansfield for a new male generation is the real issue here. Well, she surely is worth it. Enjoy and admire a true pin-up from our father's and grandfather's times.
Voyeur and Peeping-Tom Delight !.......2006-07-19
It is quite understandable that this film was seen as 'shocking' when it was released. After all,Jayne was the first 'major-star' to appear naked in a movie.Actually those naked scenes are quite strange, and seem out-of-context in the movie plot(if you call that a movie plot!).When,at one point she is in bed naked, she actually looks like she is mastur...Jayne was 30 years old, looked absolutely sensational, mostly as she sings'Promise Her Anything' in that floor-lenght gown.Wow !
This movie is a must-see for any Mansfield fan.We see her with Mickey Hargitay the year before they finally got their divorce;also on a sad note,we get to see Marie 'The Body' McDonald in her last film role(died in 1965).Also another bonus is to watch T.C. Jones, the female impersonator, being himself (Gay as a picnic basket,as Sophia in The Golden Girls, would say !)
In no way is this film a Classic, but it is good-fluff,and it sure beats the other poor choices Ms. Mansfield made in her career.
It was allright!.......2006-06-05
It was an allright movie nothing spectacular. I have always liked Jayne Mansfield so I thought this movie would be exceptionally good oppossed to simply average.
Promises! Promises!.......2006-02-06
Promises! Promises! is the ultimate Jayne Mansfiled movie. It is a must for any Jayne Mansfield fan. The movie is very low budget. There is a scene where Marie MacDonald and Tommy Noonan are walking and you can see the microphone in front of them. Jayne Mansfield makes up for all that. I have seen it many times and from the opening credits which thank Jayne Mansfields parents for providing her body to the end it is a Jayne Manfields fan dream come true.

Description
Joey Coalter (William Petersen, TV's "C.S.I.: Crime Scene Investigation") is a restless adventurer who's been married for nearly thirteen years to his high-school sweetheart, Christine (Sissy Spacek, Coal Miner's Daughter), but has been working odd jobs that have kept him away from home nearly the whole time. Fed up with her husband's wandering ways, Chris files for divorce and makes plans to marry a local, and reliable, businessman. Completely stunned when he receives a wedding invitation (secretly sent by their daughter, Beth), Joey rushes home to try to win back his wife in this true-to-life romantic comedy.
Customer Reviews:
Nicely Done But Not for Everybody.......2006-05-17
"Hard Promises" is a bit like a doing a rural remake of "A Tree Grows In Brooklyn" into which you incorporate the basic premise of "Sweet Home Alabama". While not in the same league as the former, it is considerably less offensive than the latter-which it may have inspired.
Billed as a romantic "comedy", the film contains little humor (unless you are still amused by small town stock characters) and nothing profound in the romance department. But like "A Tree Grows In Brooklyn" it is about the interplay of love, freedom, and caring among people who have allowed a considerable distance to grow up between each other.
It features a nice performance by Sissy Spacek (who looks unexpectedly sexy and beautiful) and a nice portrayal of a charismatic character by William Peterson. Yet they are both upstaged by Olivia Burnette who plays the Francie character (handled so well by Peggy Ann Garner in "A Tree Grows In Brooklyn").
Joey Coalter (Peterson) is an aimless free-spirit who neglects his wife and daughter while drifting around the country. Like Johnny in "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" he is full of unfulfilled promises and pipe dreams. He returns on the eve of his wife Christine's (Spacek) wedding; having been alerted by his daughter that Christine has obtained a divorce during his latest absence. About all Joey has going for him with viewers is that he loves both his daughter and his wife. About all he still has going for him with Christine is the charisma of a free- spirit and a continuing physical attraction.
His daughter Beth (Burnette) is his ally in his attempts to salvage their family, as she is not particularly fond of her mother's fiancée (Brian Kerwin). Kerwin's stable but boring character is the polar opposite of Joey and she thinks her mother is overcompensating for Joey's historical unreliability.
"Hard Promises" is mostly dedicated to exploring Joey's inherent and impossible to change aimlessness. This gets a little oppressive if you are looking for a dynamic story but the film is a successful exercise in unity and style. The score and the editing reinforce this theme and provide a surprising number of really beautiful and moving film moments. The climax is unconventional and they go out on a nice scene between father and daughter.
It is an unexpectedly slick production, a triumph of style over substance.
Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child.
A Poignant, Yet Aimless Drama with Occasional Highlights..........2005-11-13
Aimlessness presents the notion of being adrift without any direct purpose, or ambition, while it could also symbolize a nomadic lifestyle of living from day to day. Either case lacks direction, which often originates within a dreamy vision without a direct goal such as the wonder of what a hill hides on the other side. Once the initial curiosity has been put to rest, a new fascination arises from what lies beyond the next hill. The drifty mind also emerges through students' difficulty in paying attention for a longer amount of time, as boredom sets in, or through the consequence of an attention deficit. Hard Promises tells a tale of such a man, Joey, performed by William L. Petersen who most will recognize from the TV crime drama CSI.
The director Martin Davidson cleverly opens the film with a panning shot that symbolically portrays the notion of Joey's aimlessness, as a cowboy rides across a vast prairie with large hills in the background. Smoothly the camera flows to the left, as Joey's persona appears on the screen. He is telling a small group of cowboys a story from Tahiti, but these men do not understand the point of his story, which furthers the notion that Joey is a unique individual with lofty and continuously shifting dreams. However, Joey's dreams are all about to crash when a letter arrives that seems to have been all over the United States in the search for him. With a blank stare Joey begins to grasp the content of the letter, as someone is getting married - his wife.
After a long drive back home, a disgruntled Joey first visits his friend Pinky (Jeff Perry) in order to get his bearings on the situation. It has been a long time since they met, and Pinky wants to share with Joey about his successes such as a child, a promotion, and a dream car. But Joey brushes it all off, as he quickly asks Pinky about his wife's wedding situation and how he could have missed it. Quickly, yet nicely, Pinky drops the bomb on Joey and tells him that she has divorced him and now wants to get married. As the story unfolds, it reveals that Joey has been traveling the world while working odd jobs, as his wife and daughter have been stranded away from Joey's search for something better. It has been a lengthy solitude for his wife Chris (Sissy Spacek) who even breaks down the solitude over the last 12 years in days, which makes it obvious that he has neglected her. Joey also has a daughter with Chris whose upbringing he has nearly completely missed, which would make most people feel a little irritated with him.
Despite Joey's selfish preoccupation with the search for something, it is hard to be angry with him, as his awareness is much similar with that of an irresponsible child who does not truly understands what he does that hurts others. Joey is also a very nice and polite person, which emerges whenever he meets people in the film. These conflicting concepts of friendliness and selfishness presents an interesting character study that Davidson's film provides through Petersen's performance. The supporting cast including Sissy Spacek accentuates Joey's egocentric behaviors, which brings forth both his positive and negative characteristics. It is also interesting to see how he rationalizes his own self-centered behaviors. Nonetheless, it is with sadness that the viewer will see how his daughter is caught between him and a traditional family lifestyle with a father figure in the home.
The character development and the persona of Joey are rather stimulating. Yet, the film fails to notice its own weakness, as it does not have any distinct discord. Maybe, it is to enhance Joey's indifference. However, it makes the film feel unimportant, and might loose some viewer's attention when it gives insufficient effort to portray issues such as love, freedom, and family. The lack of meaning hurts the cinematic experience, as it does not reach above other films with a similar theme.
Funny, touching, love story -- doesn't get better.......2005-11-12
The chemistry of the actors in this movie make the sweet little love story really a gem. Sissy Spacek is a teacher ready to get re-married when her daughter sends a wedding invitation to William Peterson, the ex. He has been a drifter following jobs all over the country and doesn't even know he's divorced. He rushes back to win Sissy back with comic results. They find they still have a spark for each other. Their daughter just wants her family back and this lends a touch of bitter-sweeetness to the movie. Mare Winningham is great as Sissys best friend.
Great Movie.......2004-07-03
My husband and I recently saw this movie on the Pax Channel and I really liked the movie even though I wish the ending would have been better (The wandering husband and wife getting back together, however over all I like the movie and all the actors did a great job. My husband that it was a bit too mushy for his tastes.
William Petersen and Sissy Spacek are great.......2004-01-12
William Petersen is a wandering husband who's wife (Spacek) has obtained a divorce without his knowledge. When his daughter sends him a wedding invitation, Petersen heads for home, thinking he can re-charm his ex into cancelling her wedding. It has some laughs and a tear jerker ending. Great movie I recommend to all.

Its OK.......2007-01-08
Interesting documentary about the UN (and what it does and does not accomplish), but its only about an hour long and more could have been done. Ron Silver's project. Worth seeing; not sure its worth buying, however, unless you can find it pre- owned (then its about the same price as a rental, if you can even find it in your local video store).
Oversimplified and somewhat inaccurate.......2006-05-20
This film on the United Nations examines the goals the founders of the UN envisaged for the organization and then investigates how the UN failed in light of these original goals. The sixty-five minute documentary is divided up into the following topics: the original promise; the United Nations and Israel; peacekeepers; Rwandan genocide; Srebrenica massacre; scandals and corruption; reform.
In the first critical topic the authors claim that the UN has failed Israel, starting in 1948, when it did not defend the country against the attacking Arab armies. It does not mention that the organization has also failed 2.5 million Palestinians who have lived under Israeli occupation for almost forty years and whose citizenship rights this international body never enforced. The argument that the UN is systematically biased against Israel is therefore oversimplified.
The other discussions appear all right to me, even though the authors fail to point out that different failures of the UN have different underlying causes and therefore need to be addressed in different ways. Examples are alleged rapes of women in Congo by UN personnel and failure to send UN troops to Rwanda. Clearly, these are two very different problems that call for separate solutions. In light of this fact the documentary's final chapter, which calls for reform, falls short. It provides no way out of the bleak picture the authors have drawn, leaving the viewer with the question: And now what?
To make a long story short, I may play the better segments of this film in my college course on international organizations. The main reason for this choice is that I have not managed to locate another documentary on the UN. I would, however, have preferred a more sophisticated treatment of this important organization.
Illuminating.......2006-04-05
This DVD is educational for those who were not quite old enough
to remember why the United Nations was originally formed. It also
outlines the faults which have occurred since the original
charter was signed.

Product Description
"The Promise" is a family film about faith, trust and love. Six-year-old Emily wants nothing more than to spend time with her father. Emily's father, despite good intentions, constantly makes promises he is unable to keep. He is finally able to secure a position that will allow more time with his family. Before leaving for the job interview, he promises his daughter a trip to the Seattle Aquarium upon his return. Due to a tragic accident, the father is killed. Emily, being too young to understand the finality of death, refuses to accept the fact that he is gone. She goes off on a cross-state adventure to meet her father at the Seattle Aquarium. As she states, "A promise made is a promise kept." Emily is aided in her travels by various individuals including a Mennonite farmer, the Celtic band Skweez the Weezle, and a homeless man from Seattle. The fun ensues as she innocently stays one step ahead of the authorities while finding her way to Seattle. In the conclusion, she learns that no one is truly gone if you have their memory in your heart.

Product Description
My times have changed people's attitudes towards nuclear power and weapons. The History of Nuclear Energy - Problems and Promises 2 DVD set makes that very clear. After World War II, the United States was determined to make sure the American people did not become terrified by the awesome power of the atomic bomb. Reassuring the populace that nuclear weapons were not as dangerous as we now know them to be was of paramount importance. On his incredible historic 2-DVD set, History Of Nuclear Energy - Problems And Promises, you will see real newsreel footage that documents exactly how the government presented the dangers of his awesome new power. In these vintage film clips you will see exactly how much more powerful the atomic bomb became between the 1950s and 1960s. As you watch real life atomic tests, scientists will tell you how much the power of the atom accelerated in less than a decade. Here is a complete track by track listing: Nuclear Medical Aspects of Nuclear Radiation News Magazine of the Screen: Atomic Energy Operation Cue (1964 revision) About Fallout (1955) Radiological Defense About Fallout (1963) The DVDs work on any zone DVD player. The disks come with a 30 day money back guarantee and ship in traditional Amaray style DVD cases. The footage on the disks has been expertly restored and preserved in the digital format.

Contrasts And Contradictions.......2006-11-07
The films on these two dvds illustrate the begining of a debate that rages on to this very day. When Einstein discovere the amount of energy that could be created by splitting the atom he opened up a huge pandoras box.
While many thought the atom shoudl be used to create nearly free electricity for the masses, other people saw the potential to create the most devestating bombs the world would ever know.
Even more worrisome, some people would argue, was that there was so much energy in the atom that even using it to simply make power caused a huge risk to the general population if and when an accident should occur.
In the 1950s the american government wanted to explore both the energy and weapons potential of the atom, but knew that they would need to generate public support for both projects.
This would not be an easy sell - because many people were generally terrified of any use of atomic energy.
Therefore the propoganda boys stepped in and made films designed to not only explain the power of the atom to the american people, but to also sell them on the idea that we needed both nuclear power and nuclear weapons.
What's interesting about these films is that they show that the essential debate has not changed much over the years. We are still discussing the same concerns and fears - even though our atomic understanding is far, far greater than it was back in the 1950s.
I like the way the producers of this package allow the footage to build up slowly with benign uses for nuclear energy and then hit us with the bigger more modern and far more dangerous explosion clips towards the end.
All in all these are important films that have earned their way into history.
Terrifying.......2006-05-04
What a buch of really scary Cold War era film clips. I just watched Nixon on DVD and it was a romantic comedy compared to these films.
The premise of all the clips here is that the government was building bigger and bigger bombs to beat the commies and at the same time trying to get nuclear power going and popular no matter what the case.
What they did was create a bunch of propoganda films designed to make people love the bomb and all things nuclear. It's like something out of the Ministry of Truth.
I can't imagine what it must have been like to grow up in a time when people watched and beleived these things and I'm glad I got a chance to see them because it gives me a good sense of just how far the government will go to convince people that what they want is good for the country.

Product Description
The crown is the symbol of victory or award of the highest honor or rank. It is also the symbol of royalty and authority. God has made the conditional promise of five crowns to the believers. They gave Christ a crown of thorns, a symbol of ridicule, at His crucifixion, but God turned this crown into our salvation and to Christ's glory.
God has also appointed Israel to be His crown of glory, but this crown is in the future. Israel is now His chosen people, but they have not attained their promised place. Throughout their history they have been in a rebellion-repenting cycle. Scripture states that the day will come when they turn to the Lord in a day. I think this is the day when they become His crown of glory. This crown is not a conditional crown because the Israelites will turn to God.
The Scripture also promises crowns for the believer, but these crowns are conditional promises. You have to meet the requirements to receive the crown. The Crown of Victory, the incorruptible crown, is given to those individuals who accept God's gift of salvation. The acceptance of the Lord Jesus as your personal Savior is the only requirement for this crown. Being a good, honest moral person will not result in winning the incorruptible crown, although some churches imply that it will, without Jesus this activity will only bring a corruptible crown. They also call this the Crown of Righteousness.
When we accept Jesus as Lord and Savior, He takes our unrighteousness and gives us His righteousness. This makes us pure and acceptable before the Lord. Once we are in the Lord, we should try to follow His will for our lives, and oppose the forces of evil.
