Product Description
They were the most legendary and respected politicians, statesmen and warriors of history's first republic since the days of ancient Rome. They were also traitors and smugglers, rabble rousers and hot-heads, unfaithful husbands and prodigious drinkers. Because despite what some history books and much folklore would have us believe, our nation's revered Founding Fathers were, in fact, human beings. Now, in this comprehensive four-part series, gain a fascinating, engagingly intimate glimpse behind the iconic images on the marble busts and the noble faces gazing out from our dollar bills and pocket change. And discover the remarkable, unseen private sides of the men who risked their reputations, fortunes and lives for the cause of American independence.

The four programs from the History Channel in this set profile America's Founding Fathers, noting right at the outset they were a "mismatched group of quarrelsome aristocrats, merchants, and lawyers." The story of how these disparate characters fomented rebellion in the colonies, formed the Continental Congress, fought the Revolutionary War, and wrote the Constitution is told by noted historians, and the production is enhanced with beautifully photographed reenactments as well as intelligent use of period paintings and engravings. The story begins with Samuel Adams and John Hancock in Boston, whose protests against British taxation led to the Boston Tea Party. Moving on to the Continental Congress meeting in Philadelphia, the brilliant delegates from the South, particularly George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, appear on the scene, and the story is told of how an improbable cohesion between the colonies began. Other main characters, including Benjamin Franklin and John Adams, appear in turn, and each of the major participants is portrayed in a biographical profile. How these men all came to act together, despite the stark differences in their backgrounds and temperaments, becomes the main thread of the story. They were all quite human, as the historians who appear in interviews remind us. Some of them drank too much, some had illegitimate children, some owned slaves, and some could hardly get along with anyone. Yet these men with complicated private lives worked together and performed heroically. This is an intelligently rendered and captivating look at the men who formed the American nation. --Robert J. McNamara

I suppose this production might have some value for introducing people to the Founding Fathers. It has the advantage of playing up their human side, which many people have a hard time getting in touch with. But overall, the history is superficial and at times inaccurate.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2006-10-12

Certainly the finest documentary every made of Jefferson or any of the founding fathers. It delves into the mind of Jefferson and attempts to see the world through his eyes and emotions. A must see!

4 out of 5 stars Decent Overview of the Founding Father's life.......2004-08-07

First of all, this DVD is NOT about the American Revolution. If you want to know about the American Revolution and how the country was built, then "Liberty: The American Revolution" from PBS is a much better choice. Nevertheless, this is still a decent DVD, if you want a quick overview of the biography of the Founding Fathers. Each Founding Fathers biography is covered equally in length. They are Samuel Adams, John Hancock, John Adams, Patrick Henry, George Washington, Thomas Paine, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton and James Madison. You will learn that each Founding Fathers has different reason to join the revolution, not all of them get along with each other, they came with many flaws just like humans, and not all of them were respected after the end of the revolution. The DVD is begin with the seed of the revolution, why each Founding Fathers decided to join the revolution, the Declaration of Independence, the Revolutionary War, and the creation of the U.S constitution along with the Bill of Rights. Overall, this is a decent DVD. My only complains are sometimes they talk about the Founding Father's character that are not important to the revolution and there is very little coverage about the war. But overall, this is a good DVD if you want a quick overview of the life of the Founding Fathers.

2 out of 5 stars Good Cover, No Meat.......2004-02-04

What a waste of time. I wanted to learn about the founding of America, instead I am force-fed moronic "professors" obviously chosen for their willingness to say stupid things. One said he was surprised the Founding Fathers were able to function because they were so drunk, using about four different descriptive slang terms rather than "intoxicated." Another said that John Adams was a candiate for Prozac and implied that the first child he had with his wife may have been illegitimate despite being born 9-10 months after the wedding (married in October, baby born in July).

I am so sick of the tripe A&E and the History Channel release. The History Channel used to seem more legitimate than A&E, now it's just the same nonsense. Something calling itself "The HISTORY Channel" should do more than try to revise it.

Don't waste your money.

4 out of 5 stars Great way to learn........2003-04-04

This helped to shine an unexpected new light on our heritage.... Definetly more real than the way it was presented to me in my youth.
A good additional learning tool.

4 out of 5 stars A comprehensive product.......2007-01-15

Henry's "National Treasures" is a rather comprehensive product
concerning symbols etc. If you are familiar with masonic art
and symbols you will not find so much new stuff, but the DVD is
still very interesting and professional.

4 out of 5 stars Lifting The Veil .......2006-07-30

William Henry's "National Treasures" is a surprisingly informative work on American founding fathers symbols. Symbols such as the bald eagle (which represents the spiritual principal and was associated with the Goddess Minerva & Athena according to William Henry), the caduceus (the symbol for the House of representatives, and medical profession), Allseeing eye within a pyramid, Apron, and ziggurat to name a few originated in ancient Khemet (Egypt)

William Henry's segment on Thomas Jefferson was pretty deep I did not know he did a study on Egyptian hieroglphs and Michamac "Indian" cryptographic scripts and saw them as almost identical. Jefferson was called the father of American cryptography. And his wheel cypher was used by spys during many modern wars. There are many more revelations on Jefferson on this DVD. Henry's discourse on Nimrod (founder of Freemasonry?,first Grand Master) extremely interesting. According to a widespread rumor, within the so called higher degrees of Freemasonry therein resides an inner circle, the enlightened, if there is an inner circle in Freemasonry this DVD could prepare you for this level. This DVD is very simliar to the DVD "Mother of Christian Church the Egyptian Temple" by an understudy of Dr. Ben this DVD (Egyptian Temple) provides a better balance and objectivity. Overall "National Treasures" is a surprisingly well put to together piece of work.

    Product Description

The wall of separation is a metaphor deeply embedded in the American consciousness, and an idea that continues to cause deep controversy within the country. In this historical documentary, Godawa takes a look at what the Founding Fathers intended when they framed the Constitution and wrote the First Amendment religion clauses. Were they trying to create a Christian nation, a secular paradise, or something in between? An examination of the humble origins of the wall of separation in Thomas Jeffersons 1802 letter to the Danbury Baptists reveals a meaning quite different from the modern understanding, yet one that foreshadowed the ongoing debate of today. The documentary takes a look at how our understanding of church and state relations has changed through history by means of Supreme Court decisions and cultural pressures. From Everson vs. Board of Education to the most recent decisions over Ten Commandments displays, such interpretations are explored in comparison with the Founders original intent. This raises questions: Should "original intent" guide modern interpretation? Should government be secular, or should religion have influence on the State? There are no easy answers to this ongoing debate that polarizes the nation.

4 out of 5 stars stars of jazz.......2007-02-19

This video mainly provides two things. One is an excellent look at some of the only existing footage of Charlie Parker, and the other is a glimpse of Gillespie's attempt to merge the bebop stylistic changes with the big band format.
The footage of Parker and Gillespie is from a 1952 tv show for their reception of Down Beat awards. They play one track--Hot House.
The next several tracks are of Gillespie's 1947 big band playing a show for television which features singers and dancers. Though this is certainly not normal bebop fare, it is an interesting intersection of bebop soloing, big band popular tunes, and simple entertainment--something which Gillespie was never so much against as others in the movement.
The final track is from Gillespie's 1961 quartet and provides an updated look of the bebop small group format.
The only curious thing about the disc is that the packaging labels 10 tracks, though the DVD only has 8 of those on it. Tracks 2 and 3 are simply not there (Salt Peanuts and Be Bab A Lee'Ba). I am not sure where something went wrong, but it is also listed on the "personnel" section of the DVD itself that tracks "2-9" are Gillespie's big band. Where these two missing tracks are is not really known.
All and all great footage of quality video and sound, with 6 of 8 tracks showing an important side of Gillespie (and bebop/jazz) that is little remembered or discussed.
