When Julie Andrews sang "The hills are alive with the sound of music" from an Austrian mountaintop in 1965, the most beloved movie musical was born. To be sure, the adaptation of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II's Broadway hit has never been as universally acclaimed as, say, Singin' in the Rain. Critics argue that the songs are saccharine (even the songwriters regretted the line "To sing through the night like a lark who is learning to pray") and that the characters and plot lack the complexity that could make them more interesting. It's not hard to know whom to root for when your choice is between cute kids and Nazis.

It doesn't matter. Audiences fell in love with the struggling novice Maria (Andrews), the dashing Captain von Trapp (Christopher Plummer), and, yes, the cute kids, all based on a real-life World War II Austrian family. Such songs as "My Favorite Things," "Do Re Mi," "Climb Every Mountain," and the title tune became part of the 20th century Zeitgeist. In addition, The Sound of Music officially became a cult hit when audiences in London began giving it the Rocky Horror Picture Show treatment, attending showings dressed as their favorite characters and delivering choreographed comments and gestures along with the movie. So why resist, especially when the 40th Anniversary Edition is the best DVD yet.

The DVDs
As if the direct involvement of Julie Andrews weren't enough, the 40th Anniversary Edition of The Sound of Music is a must-have for fans because of the fond sense of nostalgia that will touch all but the worst cynic's heart. Andrews introduces both discs and contributes a commentary track on the film. It's a joy to hear her speak about the film (for example, she explains how she solved her dislike for the lyrics of "I Have Confidence"), and also heard are remarks by Christopher Plummer (who at one point refers to his being 48, which if true would mean his comments were made in about 1975), Charmian Carr (Liesl), choreographer Dee Dee Wood, and Johannes Von Trapp (the real-life Maria Von Trapp's youngest son, who admits that his father did have a whistle but claims that he was not as stern as portrayed in the film). Even with all those people involved, there are still significant gaps of silence, however. Retained from the previous two-disc editions is the commentary track by director Robert Wise, which during the musical numbers becomes an isolated score with no vocals. Also new are sing-along subtitles in English, Spanish, and French, which allow you to have your own sing-along at home. In addition, the film's remastering shows off a truer and much warmer sense of color.

On the second disc, Andrews participates in a new 63-minute documentary "My Favorite Things: Julie Andrews Remembers." But it's really a general making-of documentary with contributions from a number of principals, including director Robert Wise, who died in mid-2005 (not surprisingly, some stories are repeated from the commentary track and from the 87-minute documentary on the previous DVD). Andrews also shares a warm 19-minute sit-down with Christopher Plummer. Carr, who over the years has become the film's biggest advocate, narrates a new 22-minute documentary, "On Location with The Sound of Music," in which she revisits the places in Salzburg where the movie was filmed, and even joins one of the "Sound of Music tours" that have become a booming industry. And acknowledging another big industry, there's a 12-minute featurette on the sing-along phenomenon, focusing specifically on the audience, costumed and otherwise, that attended a sold-out Hollywood Bowl sing-along in 2005. Making special appearances at the event are four von Trapp great-grandchildren and all seven of the actors who played the children. Thankfully, those actors also appear in a 33-minute documentary "From Liesl to Gretl: A 40th Anniversary Reunion," in which they explain what they do now (many are still in show business) and share stories about the film, who was afraid of Christopher Plummer, and what they feel is their responsibility to the film's passionate fans. What's touching is how the group still considers themselves a family so many years later. Other material includes an A&E documentary on the von Trapps, Mia Farrow's screen test for the Liesl role, and a restoration comparison.

What's Missing?
If you already own the previous two-disc editions, you'll want this 40th Anniversary Edition as well, but you might not want to toss those versions. Probably the most significant omission from this edition is the original 14-minute documentary Charmian Carr made in 1967, "Salzburg Sight and Sound." Carr's new documentary includes only a couple clips from the vintage piece. It's not a great work of art, but it's a notable loss and would have made a good contrast with the new documentary. In addition, the new making-of documentary is about 24 minutes shorter than the old one. Also missing are the audio-only features--the interviews, the radio programs, the Ernest Lehman spotlight--and the historical still gallery examining the history of Salzburg and the film. Granted, this material probably got the least play of any of the old features, but completists might want to hold onto their old discs for it. It would have also been nice to have screen tests other than Farrow's. Tests for all the children and for Christopher Plummer (including singing in his own voice before he was dubbed for the film) were included on Hollywood Screen Tests and Rodgers and Hammerstein: The Sound of Movies. Again, they're not critical but it would have been nice to have them all in one place. So maybe the 40th Anniversary Edition isn't the complete package on The Sound of Music, but it's the most satisfying edition yet, with enough new material to please even the veteran SoM DVD watcher. --David Horiuchi

The Sound of Music.......2007-07-02

Shot in pristine color on location near Salzburg--and featuring that dizzying opening shot of Maria belting out the title tune from a verdant hilltop--"Music" fully deserves its reputation as one of the most popular films of all time. The daisy-fresh Andrews is simply terrific, whether she's acting or singing, and the songs--"Do Re Mi," "Climb Every Mountain," and "My Favorite Things"--have become part of our cultural heritage. Adapted from the Rodgers and Hammerstein Broadway play, the film might be a bit schmaltzy at moments, but in all, it remains utterly irresistible. The hills are still alive--and your singing pipes will be too--with the wondrous "Sound of Music."

the magic is alive..........2007-06-26

I was only six but I still remember when my mother took us kids to the movies to see 'The Sound of Music'. A memory permantly ingrained as is this film. From the most amazing opening shot ever filmed this classic film never lets go of yor senses. It's fun, thrilling and holds up extremely well. Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer are exquisite. Sure some of the lyrics are corny and simple but it all works and I'm not even a fan of musicals.

Who doesn't know the general plot of this movie? Well just in case: Maria is thinking of becoming a nun, yet Sister Superior isn't so sure about that and sends her off to become the governess to seven Von Trapp children. There she meets the very strict father and the not so angelic children. She quickly wins over the children and their father. While all this is going on the Nazis are slowly but surely taking over the country. By the second half of the movie they become a true family and decide to make a dareing escape from the Nazis.

Now that pretty much wraps it up plot wise, yet there is so much more. The songs are very sugar coated but so what? They are there for a purpose: teaching children to not be afraid, coaching them on how to sing,etc. In most parts they are there for the pleasure of the young and the young at heart.

I'll close with an example. I was driving with my wife and our girls in the car, and we were looking at about an hour trip to my mother's house so we popped The Sound of Music in the DVD and we were on our way. As I heard (I coudn't see the movie of course) the movie and we sang the songs on our journey, I looked back and every face was smiling. Now if you are looking for a movie like that you've come to the right place.

This review is about the movie and not the DVD Product-

I saw it yesterday, Im 43, last time I saw ir I was 28 and prior to that I was 12 the first time I saw it. It still holds the magic, and now I can say its a classic for all the family.

Yes, now I see details I previously did no see. The plot is so idillic that you don't feel the nazi presence inspiring fear, the love scenes are a perfect example of puritanism and political correctness. Yet there is love and there Julie Andrews gives a performance larger than life to captivate all public.

I do not know why in the review preface there is some critisims of the lyrics of the song "Sound of music"- those were elaborated lyrics and none of that senseless rap or overly simplistic lyrics. Sugarcoated? You bet, but just like the pinl lemonade they were sipping on the terrace, "its not too sweet, not too acid, its just too pink "

The movie has an ending that is rather sudden, just as it starts with that glorious song it should have ended with one as well, a triumph song. I still have the same feeling I did when I was 12, what happened to them?

It's called "the Mozart Effect," the notion that exposing youngsters to the melodies of the maestro can improve verbal ability, spatial intelligence, creativity, and memory. It's a pretty big leap of faith to understand that effect unless you personally see a toddler react to the stimulation. The Baby Einstein folks have a series of tapes (Baby Einstein, Baby Bach) that add visual stimulation to the bouncy recordings (using vibraphone, Rhodes electric piano, and even a glockenspiel). The melodies are heard against colorful imagery of spinning tops, wave machines, soft baby toys, mobiles, and the like. Several parenting groups and magazines have heralded the tapes for children 1 to 36 months, but the Orwellian aspect of introducing babes in arms to the TV screen may cause many to just pick up the CD. --Doug Thomas

This is the first one we got and 10-month old daughter has been watching this one since she was 2 or 3 months, and still loves it. I'd say either this, or the Baby Monet, is her favorite of the BE DVDs. The "choreography" is spectacular; for instance, during the Turkish march, they show toy penguins (at least I think that's what they are) moving up and down one of those roller-coaster things. No doubt that it's marketing for their toys, but it's enjoyable to watch it anyway, and probably helping to develop her sense of music. When I put that same piece on for the baby (some recording other than the BE DVD) and I imitate the penguins, she laughs. To be sure, the quality of BE DVDs varies from one to another, and just because you like one, doesn't mean you'll like all of them. But if you buy only one of them, this is the one to get.

Notwithstanding the lack of correlation between exposure to baby videos and intelligence (as cited by some other reviewers), a search of the scientific literature does yield some studies published in recent years showing that exposing infants to specific musical styles influences their musical preference later on (for instance, see Cognition. 2000 Oct 16;77(1):B15-23). Obviously, this does not mean that you need BE. My infant hears much more music, including plenty of Mozart, via audio without video, and the BE is just something extra. In spite of the commercial content, I think it is a worthwhile expense.

A 30 minute toy commercial.......2007-04-21

Not only do they start with a promotional message you are not allowed to skip, the whole DVD shows a selection of toys available for purchase - the website is helpfully listed at the end.

So... they are advertising directly to our babies now, and making us pay for it by saying they are going to help our children's brains.

So, you can take your pick as to who is being programmed.

This one's going back. I think I'll try The Wiggles.

About as useful as those Dog Sitter DVD's.......2007-04-06

Very highly overrated... I've seen kids that would be mesmerized by this and I'm glad it works for their parents... I think my child is just easily bored... to be honest you'd keep your childs attention more by throwing on a family video.

I'll try the tapes again when she's a little older but for a curious and intelligent nine-month old I'd have to say these tapes are a waste of money.

Not only does this set have all the classics there are bonus features (extra cd's) on each glorious movie. You cannot go wrong with this set. If you have children, this is a must-buy item - they will view these movies over and over again. A Collection of Great Musical Dramas.......2007-05-14

The Rodgers and Hammerstein Organisation has released this boxed set containing six of their film musicals, each of which comes with a second disc of bonus archival material and documentaries elaborating on the shows. The extra content varies: For example, in Carousel, the film of Liliom, the book on which the R&H show is based is included in its entirety. The bonus discs are themselves compelling viewing, especially prior to watching the main feature, which could be at a later stage because it could be too long to do both in one sitting; besides, these are the great masterpieces of the American Musical Theatre and Drama, although State Fair was first a film, and transferrred onto the stage more recently, and posthumously for the authors.

The stage and film musicals that Richard Rodgers, music, and Oscar Hammerstein II, lyrics, collaborated on, in both cases later in their careers, are the greatest of musical dramas to be found.

The Digital Video Essentials DVD is a great tool for helping you set up your home theater. Many of the reviews for DVE will have you believe that the menus are difficult to navigate and that much of the information within the DVD is without explanation. I can certainly say that my experience with DVE was a very positive one.

I believe the trick to unlocking the full potential of DVE is to be patient. The narrator suggests that you go step-by-step through the DVD. I highly suggest this. Doing so allowed me to fully understand what each of the test patterns was used for and how to properly use them. For a first-time DVE viewer it is very helpful to have these explanations. Later on, when you've sat through the program once, you can use the menu system to jump directly to the test pattern you need.

Navigating the extensive menu system will seem daunting at first, but again, if you follow the narration from the beginning the menu system is clearly explained. After listening to this explanation, I had no trouble navigating the menus to find any specific title or chapter I wanted.

Like many other reviewers, I'm my family's "go to" person when it comes to setting up home theater equipment. Even so, Digital Video Essentials taught me a thing or two. Now, instead of simply knowing how to adjust the settings, I know why I am adjusting them. I find this to be very beneficial when working to get that perfect setup.

In the end, Digital Video Essentials isn't a "magic bullet" that will do everything for you. Likewise it isn't very useful for someone who is not already familiar with the material and who does not have the patience to sit through the program's narration. What DVE is however, is an effective tool for helping you to get that "perfect setup" while learning why you're making the adjustments to your setup.

When the DVD tells you to compare one thing to another on the screen the instructor does not explain what that thing is. Uses terms that are not defined anyplace.

I am not stupid and have kept up with most home stereo/5.1 and have my own in two separate rooms.

Until they define the objects on the screen and what to do with them this DVD is not for most users.

Good but..........2007-05-13

It is a very good product, but the settings you do are for the DVD input only (for most TV sets). Replicating the results sometimes are not good for the other inputs. Also it is 480p and it does not produce the ATSC HDTV color temperatures. BUT, I wil give it a 4 starsm since it helped to educate me in the area, as well as to pay attention to many details. It does have some nice diag screens, although of difficult and counter-intuitive navigation.

EXCELLENT for the home audio and theater enthusiast. We used it to adjust every system in the house. Be patient! It's a bit time consuming.

The images are lively, clean, and sharp, and producers The Baby Einstein Company have a firm handle on what interests babies and toddlers. The extraneous segments with two pretty little blonde girls is silly, but forgivable. Given that most children elect to watch a video repeatedly, this is one that parents won't mind in the slightest. The images are simple with a lot of contrast for little eyes to focus on. My 5 month old son especially loves it when the children appear on screen; he goos and giggles. He has favorite parts, the animated 'singers' and the live children. I appreciate that he is listening to Bach even though it may not be an actual symphony playing the music. I know his mind is being stimulated. My husband & I watch this with him and tell him what he is looking at to put words with the items.

If you aren't aware of Baby Einstein...you're living under a rock!! My baby actually "watched" this at 6 weeks!! As a person who works with children who are developmentally challenged, I highly recommend this video. In my opinion, all babies should watch this once a day to help stimulate brain development!!

I *love* Bach and the music selection for this video is hardly any of the best stuff he composed and so dumbed-down that it's downright bad (maybe it's not dumbed-down and the people who arranged it had a different idea for the figured-bass than most others have seen it but it still isn't appeasing to the ears). Also, like I've said in all my reviews of the composer vids, the timing is off for the vid portion and in a Bach video that's just not good. The Mozart vid is far better music wise but I suggest buying the c.d.s and forgoing the vids for this collection altogether.

Can you just imaging how Bach can be sound if you spread in 3-dimension
The polyphony of different voices playing around you creating amazing music experience, everything about that is on this disc. If you have or plan to have the technology to experience it, not to have this album in your collection will be a big loss.

It is sound like placing you in the center of the mix, but they use different "voices" in different points of the circle, so it is not a static setup. This mix is geniously build based on that approach. I am certain that it very detail serious work was done transcripting this originals for this kind of presentation. Vary natural and exiting new experience like Bach music was written to be produced that way.

There is a lot of classic stuff out on synthesizer, and this effort is probably among the better examples of the format that I have heard. However this album is obviously done using virtual instruments it is not sound like traditional synthesizer music at all. Allot of voices presented with flutes, corns, synthesized sounds of strings and harps, different organs. Sound is very natural.

I think they did the right thing. When you put in the disk, it starts playing right away, and if left unattended will just play all the way through over and over. You have chapter advance, pause and stop all active on the remote, as well as fast forward and reverse. There is a video track of still pictures of flowers which change periodically, but this one isn't really one to watch. Not even a track title or track list to be had, not even a menu. Leave the projector off, and just turn on the player and receiver, and you have music, similar to a CD.

All in all, I like it a lot.

Music album of the future........2007-07-02

First of all this is not just another Bach record in surround sound on HD DVD.
This is new conceptual work featuring original arrangement produced specifically for surround sound using location of sound as a main creative element. With the polyphony of Bach music this sound is really amazing.
Besides that the instrumentation itself is very interesting. Honestly I could not think about anything that was done lately that can match the surround sound effect of this HD DVD. I have an opinion that this is the great showcase of how the music will be experienced and produced in the nearest future.

I own several albums by Alexander and always surprised again and again the diversity of his talent. The film reveals Glennie's extraordinary skills in a variety of settings: playing a snare drum for bemused New Yorkers in cavernous Grand Central Station; improvising with guitarist Fred Frith in an empty warehouse in Cologne, Germany (their final vibes-guitar duet is one of the film's musical highlights); working with hearing-impaired students in her native Aberdeenshire; jamming with taiko drummers in Japan, and later delighting customers in a Tokyo bar with a spontaneous workout involving chopsticks, dishes, cans, and glassware (the woman can make music with virtually anything). This movie really captures the way sound influences our body and how limited of a view we have of an important source of information in our environment. Evelyn is truly gifted and this window into her world is fascinating. This is a slow movie compared to the usual sound bites we're used to in this day and age and I like that about it.

Other reviewers have already described the inspirational aspects of this DVD..I agree. Of particular interest to me are the many improvisational scenes between Fred Frith and Evelyn. The extra feature scenes are terrific. If you enjoy Frith's earlier improvisational outings, ya gotta get this. It's a real pleasure to see Evelyn in an improvisational setting. Many of her available recordings are not as improvisatory...also great imagery and ambient sounds.

Okay, so I have been in a learning mode recently. I don't want to learn things a school might teach me. I find myself wanting to learn about the human spirit and things that are not talked about.

I brought home yet another documentary tonight. As I watched it I was kind of taken back by the artist's child like reaction to sound, in general. As the show went on I started feeling as if her reaction to "all" sound was what made her an exceptional artist.

A long time ago my ex introduced me to a guitar player. That is all this artist did. I remember listening to the CD and being totally captured by a particular song. It would literally sweep me away and make me feel so unbelievably sad. There were no lyrics, I didn't know the artist, nor did I know the song. It turned out to be Joe Satriani's "Cry".

This is how Evelyn's music makes me feel. I don't necessarily mean that it makes me want to cry. I am saying... there are no words but you know exactly what she is expressing.

Towards the end a guy quotes Richard Long. He said something like, "Artists are people who are in touch with the energy they had when they were children. They never lost it."

Evelyn later asks, "What really makes you be you?"

I don't own anything by her at this moment, but I will! Her music took my breath away and literally gave me chills.

She also said, "We need to eat, we need to sleep, and we need music."

Beauty and Mind Expansion.......2007-02-09

An utterly absorbing portrayal of an artist who discovers and produces beauty out of unusual materials, and whose work expands one's sense of what music is (and what sound is). The result is not just the chance to hear beautiful music, but also an enrichment of one's sense of living in a world of sound, and an attentiveness to an aspect of life often unnoticed. The documentary includes generous selections of music and interviews with Evelyn Glennie, who is not only charming and very articulate, but who also has thought deeply about her work and consequently has a lot to say about it. The film was made by the filmaker of Rivers and Tides (about the artist Andy Goldsworthy), and has the same mixture of wonder, mind-expansion, and sheer pleasure as that film. In this golden era of documentaries, this film standfs out as one of the best.

In this documentary about her life and work, the percussionist Evelyn Glennie (a Grammy award-winner) does for sound what her fellow Scot and environmental artist Andy Goldsworthy did for sight in the film Rivers and Tides (2002). In fact, both films were directed by Thomas Riedelsheimer. "My whole life," says Glennie, "is about sound; it's what makes me tick as a human being." That's a remarkable statement when about thirty minutes into the film you learn that by the time she was a teenager she was profoundly deaf. From playing a snare drum in New York's Grand Central Station, improvising with Fred Frith in an abandoned warehouse in Germany, visiting her brother at their family farm in Aberdeenshire, or staging an impromptu session in Tokyo using chop sticks on restaurant paraphernalia, Glennie explores the aesthetics, psychology and physicality of sound. Splattering water, pneumatic hammers at construction sites, a tap dancer, and general urban din all provide material for her reflections. Most of the sounds in the film are experimental, eerie, and dissonant, but to her credit Glennie amazes us with the complex miracle of one of our five senses.

It's a very interesting video which explained the facts behind aspartamine in an easy to understand manner.

I was a little disappointed it didn't go into the chemical composition very much... as that's central to understanding the problem... but if you know the hazards of methanol you will appreciate the toxic effects of this substance.

A few illustrations of methanol poisoning from news reports wouldn't have gone astray... as most people aren't familiar with it's effects.

It took me two goes before it all really clicked (it's almost beyond belief in places).

Despite this the message is clear... the message is compelling... and shocking.

It puts a new light on the political machinations that are driving organisations like the FDA. It also puts a new light on a few politicians which you might have thought of as relatively spotless. Ouch!!!

If you've got friends who use artificial sweetners... get them to start using something safer. This video should do the trick.

The bitter truth about an artificial sweetener.......2007-03-29

Just over a year ago, I became a statistic when I was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes. After moving past that initial shock, it occurred to me that I could still enjoy many items because of the convenience of the `artificial sweetener' Aspartame. I took it on faith that it was tested and deemed safe by the FDA so I frequently used products that contained it. After watching Sweet Misery: A Poisoned World and realizing that I'm naïve, I should have done my homework and found out just what it was that I'd been ingesting. Needless to say, I will never again eat or drink anything containing Aspartame.

What is Aspartame exactly? Apart from it being called an artificial sweetener I mean? Well, in a word, it's poison. That may sound a little extreme but when you analyze the known information, there really is no other way to categorize it. Let's take a look.

Aspartame is broken down into 3 parts which consist of Phenylalanine, Aspartic Acid, and Methyl Ester. When swallowed, Methyl Ester immediately turns into Methyl Alcohol (a.k.a. Methanol, a.k.a. Wood Alcohol). This substance is very poisonous to the human body. Aspartame has been linked to 92 different medical symptoms, some of which are also associated with Multiple Sclerosis, Diabetes, Lupus, and Fibromyalgia. A predominant number of these symptoms are neurological problems. After discontinuing use of Aspartame laden products, individuals 'detoxifying' themselves have felt their adverse reactions decrease and show a marked improvement in health. This is strong circumstantial evidence lending credence to the fact that Aspartame is poisonous to the body. Common sense states that not everyone will have the same acute reactions to Aspartame toxicity. Information in the documentary shows that those who consumed large quantities of products containing Aspartame were showing severe symptoms sooner rather than later. Others who use these products less frequently are probably setting themselves up for health problems in their future.

In the late 1970's, the maker of Aspartame, G.D. Searle, attempted to get it approved for public consumption. Initial tests were not favorable due to health hazards created by the substance (when tested on lab animals, brain tumors didn't prove to be very popular). This didn't fit the agenda for G.D. Searle so they decided to put the ethics aside. Upon later investigation, just some of the following information was discovered: improper lab testing, fabricated test results, destruction of medical evidence showing toxicity, tampering with medical records and scientific data, and critical study documentation purposefully withheld from the FDA.

In 1980, a public board of inquiry voted unanimously to reject the use of Aspartame for public use until more tests were conducted. Once again, this was unacceptable to the G.D. Searle Company. By way of unethical political maneuvering and a total lack of professional behavior, the FDA, the government, and G.D. Searle completely disregarded public safety and got Aspartame approved for public consumption. And this was after 3 senior scientists from the FDA pleaded with the `powers that be' not to release this product. Unbelievable but true. This entire ordeal is explained in detail in Sweet Misery: A Poisoned World and it's downright appalling. In 1983, now being approved, Aspartame was finally unleashed on the unsuspecting public for the first time. Only 6 months after Aspartame hit the streets, so to speak, the following health statistics were noticed: brain tumors were up by 10%, Diabetes was up by 30%, and brain lymphoma (a very aggressive type of brain tumor) was up by 60%. To add insult to injury, in 1988, of all the food additive complaints reported to the FDA, 80% of these concerned Aspartame.

To get an idea of how prevalent Aspartame is, it can be found in these following products (just to name a few):

Soft drinks, vitamin & herb supplements, yogurt, instant breakfasts, candy, breath mints, cereals, sugar-free chewing gum, cocoa mixes, coffee beverages, instant breakfasts, gelatin desserts, frozen desserts, juice beverages, laxatives, milk drinks, shake mixes, tabletop sweeteners (NutraSweet & Equal), tea beverages, instant teas and coffees, topping mixes, wine coolers.

Sweet Misery: A Poisoned World is a very straightforward documentary and while the material presented is highly informative and absolutely necessary, it is also distressing and unpleasant. I commend the producers of this work for their courage to stand up and expose the shocking behavior of big business and government and their utter disregard for the greater good...the public at large. For everyone concerned about their health and knowing that knowledge is power, I seriously recommend this documentary to all of you.

This is a must see movie especially if you or someone you love are nutrasweet drinkers. I was, and I'm not now. I was appauled at how this dangerous substance was approved by the FDA in spite of the mounting evidence it caused brain tumors and other neurological problems. If you think everything approved by the FDA is safe, you need to see this movie... politics and big business are very powerful... education is power... empower yourself to take control of your health.

Need this one for your collection!.......2007-05-16

When reading the reviews, you can tell that the majority of them are Marty Robbins's fans. What about those of you out there who have never heard of him? He was the first country music artist to receive an acadamy award for his Country-Pop hit for "My Woman, My Woman, My Wife". He was a songwriter, actor, book-writer and music artist. Marty died in December, 1982. He was ahead of his time in writing and recording songs. I would strongly recommend that you hear examples of some of his songs that are available with various CD's for sale on Amazon. You will find out - he was truly a great artist & very versitile in the different forms of music. His last hit was a song called "Some memories just won't die". This is fitting. When you hear him sing (even for the first time) - you will be amazed. You will discover that his music plus the memories of fans who watched him perform while he was alive "just won't die" as well. You might be surprised - for you might find out it will be the same for you after watching this program. For those who are collector's of Marty Robbins - This is a must!

One of the real tragedies in music was Marty Robbins' early death in 1982. He - and we - never got to savor what might have been a career autumn, where he might have had a chance to deepen further an artistry, that, taken in hindsight, was mind-boggling in its wide range of styles. A country boy at heart, he always kept the base of his music there, but he showed how thoroughly adept he could be at Hawaiian, jazz, reggae, rock n' roll of course, gospel, and just plain old pop. He could do honky-tonk authentically. And he was the true master of the gunfighter and trail songs. The word here is versatile - to the gills!

Robbins had an astonishing vocal range, which could encompass deep, brooding lows to the sweetest tenor falsetto imaginable; take a listen here to the tropically-infused "Ka-lu-a," which is sung with real tenderness, and the upward switches into falsetto is masterfully done, e with a sound that can be metaphorically described as a golden ribbon of honey.

What's so rewarding about this collection, is that it shows his evolution through probably nearly thirty years of performing. It is fortuitous that so many video-documented performances survive. We see Marty from the clean-cut 1950s boy to the mustachoied hipster look of the 1970s. The voice remained intact throughout (his intonation and diction are both models of impeccable musicality), and his identification with the lyrics more deeply personal as time marched on. His rendition of "You'll Never Walk Alone" is poignant, moving, and you get a great sense of melancholy, almost as if he knew his time was getting shorter. Elsewhere, we get his classic rendition of "Singing the Blues," which , when you compare it to Guy Mitchell's monster-seller, shows Marty to have the much better vocal production and is livelier in expression. We also get all his signature tunes, such as "A White Sport Coat," "El Paso," "Don't Worry," "Ruby Ann," "Devil Woman," "My Woman, My Wife," among so many others, encompassing all his styles. We also get some bonus clips, from what appear to be some rare, early kinescopes.

What makes this release different from his commercial audio versions of these songs is the joy of seeing Marty perform these songs. A born performer, you see the music just oozing out from his pores. Though he displays an involvement and energy consistently, giving his all, he is so at ease and relaxed being a showman, you get the feeling that it was his natural metier.

We also get some thoughtful commentaries in between songs by Merle Haggard, Barbara Mandrell, and Robbins' son, among others, and the love all of them show is palpable.

Watching this produces a bittersweet feeling. Marty should have had so many more years, yet, he left no short measure of his prodigious talents. Here's to one of the true kings of music; long may his art endure.

My Mom LOVES this DVD. She has always been a huge Marty Robbins fan. When we put this in the player she oohed and ahhed at the start of every song and love all of the commentary. She even stopped it occassionally to add her own commentary, too. A must have for true Marty Robbins fans!
