More than any previous documentary about the Holocaust, Auschwitz: Inside the Nazi State reveals the inner workings of the Nazi implementation of Hitler's infamous "final solution." Drawing on the latest academic discoveries, this remarkable BBC series presents a wide-ranging, meticulously researched biography of the titular "killing factory" and its evolution into a highly efficient location for industrialized extermination of well over one million Jews, gypsies, and other so-called "mongrel races" between 1940 and 1945. From "Surprising Beginnings" to "Liberation & Revenge," the six-chapter program chronicles the gradual process that escalated into the Holocaust, focusing its expansive European timeline on the detailed movements of preeminent (and highly corruptible) Holocaust engineers like Heinrich Himmler, Rudolf Höss, and "death doctor" Josef Mengele. Through painstakingly authentic reenactments of crucial meetings including the Wannsee Conference (where the "final solution" was secretly devised), we see and hear the Nazi thought processes, built on virulent hatred and bigotry, that "justified" mass murder on an unprecedented scale.

Subtle but exacting use of computer-animated effects allows three-dimensional exploration of newly discovered architectural plans and buildings long-ago destroyed, revealing the transformation of Auschwitz as World War II progressed. Along with rare archival footage, thorough documentation, and frank testimony from Holocaust survivors and Nazi perpetrators (not all of them penitent about their crimes), these programs make expert use of commanding narration by Oscar®-winning actress Linda Hunt, who brings depth and gravitas to a grim litany of sobering facts and figures. The result is an all-encompassing portrait of Auschwitz unlike anything seen before, masterfully written and produced by Laurence Rees with equal parts tenacity, intelligence, and integrity, informed by an overriding sense of moral outrage that is entirely appropriate to the history being examined. It's a remarkable achievement, as important as Shoah as a definitive exploration of one of the darkest chapters in human history. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Powerful.......2007-06-02

Can one get tired of hearing about the holocaust? Not as long as there are new things to learn - and it seems there always are. Rich with detail and new information as well as special features that interview experts and survivors, this DVD adds to our growing understanding of the Nazis and their mission. One unsettling admission is how much like "us" the Nazis seemed to be when interviewed after the war. They believed, at the time, that what they were doing was the right thing to do. They weren't, as I always thought, "just following orders." They believed in what they were doing. How often do we all say that? And how often are we just plain wrong? We need to understand these things and more if we are to truly to be able to say, "Never again!" All these years later, so little has changed.

The more we tire of hearing about the Holocaust and refuse to believe that it is a problem for today, the more vulnerable we become to its reality. I will never look away. Those people had to live it. The least we can do is to bear witness - every single time the opportunity arises.

5 out of 5 stars EVERYONE SHOULD SEE THIS.......2007-05-11

The best ever exploration of the Nazi death camps, specifically Auschwitz, but the others were much the same. A stellar production from start to finish, though the conversations by the learned few at the ends of the episodes -- and this is just my opinion -- just prove how dumb smart people can be sometimes. They add noting to this FANTASTIC production, and in fact detract from it. But not enough to take a star away. Heck, this is worth TEN STARS.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining.......2007-04-02

I give this a solid three starts because it is a quality production based on an effective mix of dramatised and original footage. The pace is natural, the scripted scenes are sometimes moving and the information is engaging however, on the whole, it is not compelling. It will complement any collection of similar nazi expositions but it will not astound or astonish.

1 out of 5 stars Are You Kiddin Me!?!?!?!?.......2007-01-15

The cover of this DVD looks really interesting and plus it is made by the BBC, which I thought was definite plus, and it also had supposedly glowing reviews shown here on Amazon, so I could not wait to watch this to get the complete study of Auschwitz and the holocaust.

But to my dismay, this documentary centered completely almost througout its entirity on computer graphics, Actors , hardly any real documentary film, which is uncalled for . It was just recreated history absolutely, the producers I guess think people are just so naive to just accept everything along with whatever recreated episodes of reality that they choose. I mean we are talking absolutely rewriting history here. Nothing but recreated acting and computer graphics to show us everything. Are you people really that naive????!!!

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable - A must see for anyone with an interest in the Holocaust.......2006-10-31

A wonderful documentary profiling the worst period since humans have been on this planet. Linda Hunt is a perfect choice for narrator - the rare footage and computer-enhanced graphics only add to the value of this special DVD. A horrific time, presented as factually as possible. Bravo! Everyone should see this - it should be used in all schools as an educational tool and a warning to all.
