A man who genuinely revolutionized late-20th Century music gets his due with Moog, writer-director Hans Fjellestad's absorbing documentary about Robert Moog, inventor of the synthesizer that bears his name. In his seventies when this 2004 film was made, Moog began working with electronic music in the late 1940s, when he designed and built theremins (the source of the wavy sci-fi sound heard on the Beach Boys' "Good Vibrations"). But it was the development of the Moog synthesizer, an analog instrument with electronic components, that put him on the map. Unsurprisingly, it was initially dismissed as a soulless novelty, a notion not helped by its use in silly commercial jingles; Moog himself was regarded as nothing less than a dangerous anarchist out to destroy music as we know it. That all changed when he added a keyboard to his machine and musicians of all stripes gradually began using it for more serious ends. Moog credits Walter (now Wendy) Carlos' Switched-On Bach as the first important milestone, and the list of major artists who have used it since then includes the Beatles (on Abbey Road), Stevie Wonder (a vital early proponent who for some reason goes completely unmentioned here), Keith Emerson of Emerson, Lake & Palmer, and Rick Wakeman of Yes. The latter two perform briefly in the film, as do many others (P-Funk's Bernie Worrell, Sun Ra, Charlie Clouser of Nine Inch Nails), but Moog is the star here. Indeed, it's hard not to believe this genial, self-effacing man when he talks of the "spiritual connection" between his invention and the people who play it. --Sam Graham

Volume 2 of the stylish animated series Star Wars: Clone Wars picks up where volume 1 left off, with General Grievous threatening a group of Jedi. The war between the Republic and the Separatists continues to rage, and due to desperate need, Anakin Skywalker is bestowed the title of Jedi Knight, though he must undergo one final rite of passage by traveling to the frozen planet of Nelvan. The action is at its fiercest when the Separatists launch an overwhelming assault on Coruscant, and Masters Windu and Yoda get to show their stuff to defend the city. However, it's just a diversion from the main goal: Grievious's attempt to kidnap Supreme Chancellor Palpatine. In the series' most dramatic moment, Shaak Ti and other Jedi try to fend off the droid's attack. Clone Wars Volume 2 aired on the Cartoon Network in March 2005, and it's a bit more substantial than volume 1, taking place in five 12-minute chapters (nos. 21-25) rather than 3-minute chapters. And while volume 1 was mostly flat-out action, the developments in volume 2 lead directly to the opening of Episode III, Revenge of the Sith. And you even get small tidbits such as C-3PO (again voiced by Anthony Daniels) unveiling his new gold look, Padme sporting a cinnamon-bun hairdo, and the reason why General Grievous has difficulty breathing. Let casual fans content themselves with the feature films; Clone Wars remains essential viewing for the Star Wars aficionado. (Rated Y7 for cartoon action and violence) --David Horiuchi
DVD features
In both a commentary track and a featurette, Genndy Tartakovsky and his creative team discuss the making of Clone Wars and how it ties into Episode III, Revenge of the Sith. If you're not a fan of the Lego Star Wars, you might become one after you watch the amusing "Revenge of the Brick" trailer. There's also the same Xbox demo of Battlefront II that was on the Sith DVD, and the Dolby 5.1 sound is an improvement over volume 1's 2.0 Surround. --David Horiuchi

Another blast of Star Wars animated fun.......2007-05-29
The second volume of the animated Star Wars: Clone Wars saga picks up where the first volume left off, and further bridges the gap between Episodes II and III. In these expanded episodes that originally aired on Cartoon Network, Anakin Skywalker finally fights to be made a Jedi Knight as Obi-Wan and the others take the fight to General Grievious. There's plenty of action and wonderfully utilized animation techniques by Dexter's Laboratory creator Genndy Tartakovsky; all of which helps make volume two of the Clone Wars a must for Star Wars fans new and old alike. The only real drawback with Clone Wars is the same flaws that were apparent with the first volume: the animation style might not be your cup of tea, and as a whole the volume is too short, although this time around the story and action are better developed. Despite all that though, Clone Wars is still a treat.
Fill in the gaps.......2007-04-10
The Clone Wars DVD set help fill in the gap between Episodes II and III. These are great movies. My boys (5 and 3) love to watch them.
Segue to Star Wars: Clone Wars.......2007-04-07
This set of anime, which is Volume 2, along with Volume 1, are a must for Star Wars fans. Vol 1 & 2 fill in all the blanks that are missing between the movies Episode II and III. Very well done as the producers of the anime worked with George Lucas on the story line. This may be a cartoon, but it's all Star Wars!
Exactly what I wanted it to be........2007-04-05
Star Wars - Clone Wars, Volumes 1 and 2 are fun-filled, action-packed Genndy Tartakovsky dreams. If you like Star Wars, Dexter's Laboratory, and/or Samurai Jack then you're gonna love these Star Wars Clone Wars animated series'. There are 20 five minute episodes per disc, therefore it is a little short but you still get enough to not leave you needing more (Although I can never get enough of Genndy Tartakovsky's work). With their subtle humor and amazing fight scenes Tartakovsky style..these DVDs are a must-have.
Wait for Vol.3 .......2007-03-16
Good movies but its very unsatisfied in the ending. We still want to wait for vol.3 of this series.

Make no mistake, Clone Wars is honest-to-goodness authentic Star Wars. The animated series takes place between Episode II, Attack of the Clones and Episode III, Revenge of the Sith. If the feature films covers the beginning and end of the war, Clone Wars depicts the actual battles and events that made heroes into legends. Don't expect too much character development, as the episodes tend to be driven more by flat-out action than by dialogue (which can be a good thing, considering some Star Wars dialogue). We see such familiar faces as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, and Mace Windu in combat, and we meet the elite ARC (Advanced Recon Commandos) clone troopers plus new Jedi--the amphibious Kit Fisto and two women, Luminara Unduli and Barriss Offee. We also see a little more development of Anakin--showing off the best pilot skills in the army, defying Obi-Wan, and engaging in a deadly duel with Sith apprentice Asajj Ventress. But just when it's clear that the Separatist droid armies are no match for a Jedi, the tide begins to turn with the introduction of the menacing General Grievous, who plays a crucial part in Episode III. The cast mostly consists of veteran voice actors, but Anthony Daniels does appear as C-3PO.
Clone Wars was created by Genndy Tartakovsky, whose resume includes such stylish series as Samurai Jack, Dexter's Laboratory, and The Powerpuff Girls, and the program won a 2004 Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program (For Programming One Hour or More). These 20 episodes, which played on the Cartoon Network (and were originally designated seasons 1 and 2), can be viewed as a seamless 69-minute whole or as individual chapters. DVD features include two commentary tracks, a making-of featurette, video game and Episode III trailers, and an Xbox playable demo of the stealth game Republic Commando. If you're a fan who can't wait for Episode III, Clone Wars is essential viewing. --David Horiuchi

GREAT Supplemental Story Telling!.......2007-06-30
This cartoon is an excellent supplement to the Star Wars saga! It gives more in-depth information about the story as a whole after Episode II and before Episode III. Even my PreSchooler (who LOVES Star Wars) really enjoys this movie!
Yes, it is intense. Yes, the graphics are much more cartoon-ish than what we see in CGI cartoons today, but I really like that! Plus, the voice recognition of the characters is an added bonus.
A MUST HAVE for Star Wars fans!
Intense Cartoon!.......2007-05-10
When I first saw the Clone Wars cartoon on tv I knew I needed the DVD when it came out. I love the action sequences and think they did an excellent job. A few things seem a little far-fetched, but it's a cartoon so I let them pass.
The force is not with this one..........2007-04-17
This animated perversion of Star Wars is an insult to one of the best Sci-Fi epics of all times. The characters are utterly rediculus (seriously, if the jedi were that actually powerful, why did they need the clones?), there is no plotline to speak of, and the entire thing is badly animated and has crappy voice acting. If you want a good build-up to Episode III, I suggest playing Star Wars: Republic Commando and reading Labyrinth of Evil and the other Clone Wars novels. Don't wast your money on this, it's not worth it
Excellent service and quality.......2007-03-19
the item was recieved in excellent time and condition. Excellent Job!
Amazing.......2007-03-09
If you are slightly a fan - get this! Better than the first movie (Episode One) and half as long!

Leon Theremin was the secret link between sci-fi films, the Beach Boys, and Carnegie Hall. His self-named electronic musical instrument--the first of its kind--took the world by storm in the 1920s and '30s. Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey, winner of Sundance's Filmmakers Trophy, explores the inventor's strange life and times, including his mysterious 50-year disappearance beginning in the 1940s. Interviews with theremin virtuoso Clara Rockmore, synthesizer pioneer Robert Moog, and Theremin's contemporaries, as well as clips from movies such as The Day the Earth Stood Still, featuring the unworldly sounds of his creation, show an eccentric genius working toward success until his sudden vanishing in the Soviet Union. Footage of Theremin at 94 years old, finally rediscovered and rewarded for his achievements, brings a celebratory ending to what could be a grim or at least uncertain story, but instead is a fascinating documentary. --Rob Lightner
Description
The stranger-than-fiction true story of the father of electronic music is captivatingly told in this highly acclaimed and endlessly surprising documentary (Leonard Maltin) that garnered the prestigious Filmmakers Trophy at the 1994 Sundance Film Festival. Set against the backdrop of the instrument's ethereal sound, Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey is nothing short of sensational! In the 1920s and 30s, Russian émigré Leonard Thereminthe inventor of the world's first electronic musical instrumenthad it all. His self-named theremins were in high demand from filmmakers and musicians around the globe; he was married to a beautiful American dancer; he lived among New York's socialelite. And then, in 1938, he mysteriously vanished, not to be seen again for over 50 years!
Customer Reviews:
Great DVD.......2007-06-27
Fantastic documentary, the only thing preventing me giving it 5 stars is the fact that it doesn't have English subtitles and it is sometimes difficult to understand what Theremin is saying with his thick Russian accent.
It's a documentary - give us the information!.......2007-05-14
OK, so I would have known this if I'd read the other reviews on this page - but I'll add my opinion anyway, just in case it helps someone else.
I bought this DVD to replace a domestic VHS copy of 'Theremin' I made from Channel 4 (UK) television some time in the 1990s. It was an excellent documentary (I thought) and wanted a permanent copy for my library. The thing is, the UK television version was excellently subtitled and captioned - as many people have observed, Prof. Theremin's English is pretty much incomprehensible, and there's at least once scene where he and Clara Rockmore converse in Russian (presumably) for several minutes.
I was surprised and disappointed to find that this DVD does not have the subtitles for these sections, or the captions to indicate who the (often obscure) people being interviewed actually are. In fact, there are no English subtitles of any kind to help you.
Why not? Was this the director's intention? If so, can I just say that I'm very irritated by documentary directors who - in their rush to pretend they're making a 'film' - feel it's uncool to give us hard facts, because it cramps their visual style etc. Come on! It's a documentary - it's meant to inform us. Give us the information we need to benefit fully from it!!
Needless to say, if this DVD doesn't represent the director's intention, and should have the captions/subtitling, then this is also a serious oversight.
Either way, an excellent and informative documentary has been turned into a confusing indulgence - and I'll still need to keep that VHS copy so I know what's going on. Absolutely maddening.
Jewel of Quirkiness.......2007-05-13
My interest in the theremin began when I wondered what instrument was used in those sounds for the movie, "The Day The Earth Stood Still". Off the beaten path it took me as I found Russian connections, Tesla references, and finally, with this DVD, witnessing the actual playing of this bizarre instrument. It's just fascinating.
If you are someone who loves to find true stories that are much, much stranger than fiction, get this DVD. Do it now.
And let me know if you have a good used theremin for sale.
An excellent musical documentary to own........2007-03-28
This is an amazing story in its own right, and a documentary worth preserving in your own collection. People interested in music history, both classical and popular, will cherish the live footage of Nicolas Slonimsky, Mr. Moog, and of course of Theremin himself, among other people. You will want to show this movie to your friends, and you are likely to want to see it again to refresh your memory of quite an era.
Nice history, unwarranted PG rating (thanks to Brian W.).......2007-01-28
I watched this DVD documentary with my daughter prior to building a Theremin kit. 99% of it was great - but I was very disappointed that a PG-rated DVD would leave in the F-word and other obscenities from Mr. Brian Wilson. If you are watching this around children, be careful with this section.

Analog Synthesizer Fever.......2006-12-03
I finished watching it 5 minutes ago and the first time I did was come here to amazon to see how much a minimoog costs, too bad I will have to wait a couple of years before I can afford one. Anyway, it's a very good documentary, I'm glad someone honored Mr. Moog making a documentary about him, he desserves that and way more.
mumbling, muttering mess.......2006-08-28
A documentary about Robert Moog, one of the most important figures in electronic music? Yes, please, sign me up. Alas, this premise goes awry from the outset. This mishmash of a documentary feels like a collection of outtakes from a better work. I don't need to see Robert Moog talking about pepper plants and Money Mark diddling around on a synthesizer.
MOOG demonstrates that sometimes it's best to not rely on the subject of the documentary as the subject matter expert of the film. Robert Moog is not the most well-spoken advocate and historian of his life's work. Likewise, showing the electronic guts of his machines doesn't do much to explain how they work or why Moog's work is important to the music world.
When utilizing archive footage, MOOG works. Unfortunately, these moments are few and far between leaving MOOG a mumbling, muttering mess for its interminable seventy-two minutes. Moog and electronica deserve better.
We're lucky to have it..........2006-07-18
Nobody would fund this poor guy Hans Fjellestad... Wendy Carlos apparently even threatened legal action (for what he did or might do, I don't know). Apparently nobody else had the foresight to realize that Bob Moog wouldn't live forever. We're lucky to have this document on Bob's life, imperfect that it may be. Mr. Fjellestad was working on an extremely limited budget, so how much can you complain when it's clear nobody else was willing to share his dream, or at least help pay for it. Now it's too late to make anything like it again, at least with Bob himself in it. I for one own a copy, and am grateful for it.
Great Overview and Insite into Moogs Private world........2006-07-02
I enjoyed this documentary. I've read a few of the other reviews and I guess I am confused as to what some of these viewers expected. This is not an engineering documentary on Moog synthesizers in any regard, What we have here is a very good overview of the Man himself. Bob Moog comes across as a very easy-natured person who was initially very interested in electrical engineering but was luckily diverted into musical audio technology. In this video you can see him interacting with musicians and learning how they use his instruments. He learned not just the electrical side but the artistic side of the musicians he listened to when developing ideas. This was constant. I am currently reading a very good documentary on Moog and this video complements it very well. Since Moogs Passing in August of 2005, this video will shed much light on his character and his life interests. Bob never gave the impression he wanted to be rich from the fruit of his labors, but wanted to stay inquisitive to all aspects of his life.

interesting but not really complete documentary.......2006-03-19
A very interesting documentary about the person Bob Moog, but I expected a more complete history, more about the full range of instruments wearing the name "MOOG".
Further I miss important names as Wendy Carlos, Manfred Mann and others who helped Moog to become famous around the world.
In spite of all this I'm happy that there exists a DVD to celebrate one of the most important inventors in musical history of the second half of the 20th century.

Enjoyable Sequel to Rosamunde Pilcher's "Coming Home".......2005-06-16
Being a great fan of the novel and movie of "Coming Home," I was eager to see what happened next to favorite characters like Judith, Loveday, and Gus. Although Rosamunde Pilcher did not write this sequel herself, for the most part the characters remained true to form. Only Judith Dunbar, the admirable heroine of "Coming Home," seems to have had a personality downgrade. As well, a different actress played the part in this sequel and the whole essence of Judith seemed to change from bright girl marvel to whiney, jealous woman.
"Nancherrow" begins in February, 1947, with the funeral of Colonel Edgar Carey-Lewis, the patriarch of Nancherrow. The estate is left to his stubborn and somewhat spoiled daughter Loveday. She has married beneath her class and cannot convince husband Walter to move to the manor, thus causing endless bickering and sending Walter into the arms of another woman.
One day Loveday sees a magazine ad promoting an art show by her former love Gus Callender. Never having gotten over Gus, Loveday travels to London and once again takes up with Gus. Thus the stage is set for Loveday's return to Nancherrow with Gus, not Walter. But it is the overwhelming taxes and cost of keeping up the formerly lavish estate that will threaten her relationship with Gus. Nancherrow will always be the great love of Loveday's life, and whether there is room in her heart for a man remains in doubt.
Diana remains the beautiful and supportive mother, risking bankruptcy herself to keep Nancherrow for Loveday. We also see a new dimension to Diana as attractive widow, industrious worker, and clever manipulator.
Will Gus and Diana be able to convince Loveday to sell Nancherrow? Will Loveday be able to love a person as much as she loves her father's legacy? Will her son Nat be torn between his well-bred mother and his father, a commoner? Will Judith be able to accept the unplanned turn Jess' life takes? How will Jess deal with an overwhelming tragedy? All storylines are nicely tied up and the viewer can sleep well knowing that, as always in the world of Rosamunde Pilcher, the great majority lives happily ever after.

MODUALATIONS (VARIOUS ARTISTS)
Customer Reviews:
An extraordinary compendium of electronic music.......2007-05-26
"Modulations" is truly the most complete electronic music DVD documentary released as of 2007. Any fan of electronic music will recognize at least some (if not all) of the artists featured.
I can't think of any other film (with the exception of the rave oriented "Better Living Through Circuitry") that features such a compendium of electronic music pioneers, including instrument makers, composers, DJs, producers.. Autechre, Robert Moog, Moby, Q-bert, Karlheinz Stockhausen, John Cage, Squarepusher, Derrick May, Carl Craig, Carl Cox, O Yuki Conjugate, Scanner, Oval, Genesis P Orridge, George Moroder, DJ Spooky, Bill Laswell and many others are all here.
Notably missing from the film are Aphex Twin, Brian Eno and Kraftwerk, although Eno and Kraftwerk are quoted and mentioned throughout the film.
I am sure that the quantity of interview footage posed a problem for the producers and editors of this film, so everything is tightly edited to keep this movie from becoming another boring academic documentary with voice overs, (which i am sure it was something the producers and director wanted to avoid)
I wish this movie would have been made a lot longer, or more extra footage made available on the DVD, maybe a more structured editing approach would have made this movie a little less chaotic, but this still doesn't detract from the breadth and scope of this truly remarkable film.
This DVD is a must for anyone interested in electronic music, rave and DJ culture.
Trash.......2006-09-14
Ok, look at the cover of this DVD. It says it all:
Limegreen wording. An asian girl, with a purple-tinted face, wearing huge bug-eye glasses, big headphones over both ears. WHAT does any of this have to do with House/Techno/Drum'n'Bass, the 80's/90's Rave Scene, the developing music in Chicago and New York in the birth of Underground Dance music?
Absolutely nothing. Like most of the project, it plays to popular misconceptions of the electronic music scene (crazy teenagers having sex, high on drugs! Baggy pants! "Drum N Bass was 'invented' because people did too much ecstasy, and needed darker-sounding music!)
It's an outsider's view, misinformed, fetishized, meandering.
-------
UPDATE:
If I could make some additional points:
==================================
A LITTLE ABOUT THE WORD ELECTRONICA
In the 90's, Underground Dance Music began making it's way into the mainstream in a way similar to its last head-rearing in the 1970's. Disco was a popularized version of underground dance music, understandably despised for it's excess and apparent superficiality, just like we have today's popularized (read: diluted) versions.
In the 90's, a corporate entity called "Billboard" made a decision. Now, understand, the people who work at Billboard are not musicians. They may have taken guitar lessons when they were 15, but they not musicians. They are accountants, marketers, executives, etc. Necessary to society, but NOT to be confused with musicians.
They decided to come up with the marking name "Electronica" to describe certain styles of music gaining popularity in the 90's. This taxonomy is based neither on musicology, extensive industry experience with the music, or anything beyond catchphrase convenience. It unfortunately groups styles of music together that have very little intrinsically in common. So here's your first bit of advice - people who use the word "Electronica" got into this game via a mainstream marking taxonomy.
Please let me make something clear: marketing is necessary to the sale of music - but it is not a path to learn about music.
==================================
Now get this. We all know that DJ's, who comprise the largest group of electronic-media sound artists, play other people's records to create their "sets". This means that record companies cannot publish a DJ set as their own entirely. They have to authorize and pay for *every single record* that is played in a set (as opposed to one or two samples, which we find in hiphop/rap). This means a very slim profit margin and a very complicated royalty distribution. Companies don't like that, so DJ's, even GREAT DJ's don't get picked up by large labels.
But, there is still a lot of buzz surrounding this music, and now Billboard has branded a marketing catchphrase, so the major labels *tend* to sign and produce groups which create their own material entirely, but are frankly MEDIOCRE artists - generally speaking. I'm not saying every non-DJ electronic artist is mediocre, but when an entire population of musicians is essentially out of marketable bounds - you're left with detritus.
Modulations is one of the business spin-offs from the spike in interest in electronic music in the 90's. It is derivative, unoriginal, uninformed. Enthusiastic, yes, but without focus or merit. It is born of detritus. Iara Lee has never had anything to do with any of these fields, and it shows in the documentary. A recurring interview in the documentary is with a culture/fashion/lifestyle magazine writer. You know, the types who can always comment, no matter how vapidly, on every subject. It makes for nice sound-bites, and maybe an easier editing job for film production. But... don't you want to learn what all this beautiful music is really about?
Her aesthetic and presentation of the disparate worlds of Underground Dance Music, the European avant-garde (and the deeply misguided implication of specific connections between the the two), electronic experimental, and all other turntable-based musics, for me, encapsulates the very essence of the very contrived word: Electronica.
Don't let the fact that they drop names of concert-music composers like Cage and Stockhausen impress you. It's a documentary, not a cocktail party.
If this documentary amazed and inspired you to learn more about all the different types of electronic music - well, great! It's serves some purpose. But I would encourage you to drop any this sugar-candy edited-for-radio version and really go out to explore the good stuff.

Droning interviews spoil this DVD.......2006-06-01
A disappointment. I was hoping for extended selections of the artists' music, with maybe a little introduction/explanation. Unfortunately, its mostly artist interviews droning on and on with only snippets of the music. The artist comments are typically, "...its like everything that's noise can be music...but its like, uh, all about the technology..." No real passion or insight until some more snippets of a rave flash briefly by. Lots of subtypes of the techno music described, but its confusing how they differ for the lack of lengthy defining examples. If you are a knowledgeable fan and want some camera shots and comments of your heroes, this may be for you. If you want a clear introduction of the music and which artists may interest you enough to buy their music, skip it.
A nice teaser to the history of electronica..........2005-09-25
There are enough snippets, soundbytes and visuals in this documentary to give it a high recommendation. It runs the gamut from the early pioneers of electronica - John Cage anyone? - to the influence of the disco sound of the 70s and the emergence of the Moog into that sound and how it would soon flourish into the 80s as what we now think of as 'techno'. In other words, it has been an evolution. This film traces that evolution a bit haphazardly but quite thoroughly. In this sense, it is a valuable film.
However, it's weakness seems to be that it covers too much too fast and at times tries too hard to be hip. Perhaps that is merely symbolic of the culture in which we live but it fast forwards through artists and sounds that could have used some more depth. Considering the terrain, though, that could have made a really long documentary. So for brevity's sake, it works.
I was really happy to see snippets of Moby, Danny Tenaglia, Sasha and other well-known artists here just before hitting the big-time as 'techno' made an attempt at becoming "the next big thing" (which, fortunately, it didn't). We also get to see interviews with some of the pioneers of the Detroit techno scene and others from around the world, whose names are familiar but whose voices are not.
Hip-hop, including Afrika Bambaata's influence, and other sub-genres are given brief mention and it is refreshing to get some candid statements by some artists that this music is really not revolutionary but merely a continued rehashing and fusion of the 60s and 70s with technology.
There is so much here, everyone will find something here they didn't know. Archival footage and interviews will render this film essential as the years go by.
Overall, a highly recommended film but expect an all-out visual and aural assault.
A waste of time and money.......2005-08-03
A poorly-conceived, poorly put together mess. Don't bother.

The Missing Link/Can I give it 6 Stars?.......2006-03-09
An outstanding animated set of adventures, Star Wars-Clone Wars Vol. 2, brings to the screen 20 more three-minute war stories from the Clone Wars.
Set between Episodes Two and Three, the film sheds light on events involving some of the most impressive jedi knights, including the amazing defence of the Republic's capital city by Master Yoda and Mace Windu, the failed attempt to protect Chancellor Palpatine and his subsequent kidnapping by General Grievous, and of course Anakin Skywalker's ascent to Master Jedi status.
The cast have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are AMAZING to say the least! All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the animation does come ALIVE) allowing for a highly entertaining movie that can be watched over and over again.
The setting, the plot, the dialogues, the battle sequences, and the music are all EXCELLENT!
In short, Star Wars-Clone Wars Vol. 2 is a movie definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your Star Wars collection!

Customer Reviews:
I can see why this was rated "Youth".......2006-10-03
You'd have to be either a young kid or young teen to enjoy this shallow, pointless trash. The characters are totally flat. No character development. I've seen more character in a Flintstones or Scooby Doo rerun.
Nor is there any signifigant plot. There's about as much plot as a wrestling match. BOTTOM LINE: It's basically just a bunch of random fighting scenes strung together, and adds virtually nothing to the star wars story. *Don't waste your money.*
The Missing Link/Can I give it 6 Stars?.......2006-03-09
An outstanding animated set of adventures, Star Wars-Clone Wars Vol. 1, brings to the screen 20 three-minute war stories from the Clone Wars.
Set between Episodes Two and Three, the film sheds light on events involving some of the most impressive jedi knights, including an amazing performance by Mace Windu, an underwater battle with Master Fisto (!), and of course Anakin Skywalker in a battle worth of song among others.
1 is a movie definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your Star Wars collection! (The film establishes a GREAT cliffhanger for the sequel, which is also a "must-see!")
"You fought with my father in the Clone Wars?".......2005-03-27
The Clone Wars (Vol I- DVD) animated series begins to bridge the gap between Episodes II and III with non-stop action! We get to see some of the battles raging on the different planets throughout the Star Wars galaxy. The series also alludes to the growing 'rage' inside Anakin, as he faces off against a formidable opponent. Star Wars fans, this is a must for your collection! Enjoy this DVD, and all its extras, as you wait patiently for "Revenge of the Sith."

It is 1855, and the Austrian military has occupied Italy. Countess Livia Serpieri (Alida Valli) falls deeply in love with Franz Mahler (Farley Granger), an Austrian lieutenant. She betrays her country by stealing funds collected to aid the resistance and giving them to Franz so that he can bribe his way out of service. When she rendezvous with the lieutenant, she finds a drunken, ungrateful rogue who has used her only for her money, in what is perhaps among the most psychologically disturbing scenes ever filmed. Her revenge is swift and decisive, and though severe, quite believable. This 1954 film from Luchino Visconti (The Damned, Death in Venice) is a complex depiction of human passions and the destruction they can wreak, set against the larger destruction of war. A simple story told against the backdrop of countries at war, it belongs to the same genre as Reds and Doctor Zhivago, and is definitely worth viewing. --James McGrath

An epic romance from post war Italy.......2006-07-14
I have rated this film 4 only because of it's length, there are some ponderous moments, but otherwise it is a 5.
Italian cinema was still having growing pains from the war, but this epic succeeds, and skillfully incorporates the war torn landscape into this tale of an earlier war. The music score is very big and melodramatic, but fitting. The film opens with an opera in an enormous opera house, and this is fitting for the grand scale and operatic scope of this romance and the background. This is "Gone With the Wind" - Italian style - with a much more sympathetic heroine.
I am a fan of Alida Valli and have sought out her work. Perhaps because this is in her native Italian, and/or because of her Italian director, she is a full, vital, feminine woman in this film; very different from her more restrained work in America. (Her breathtaking performance in "The Paradine Case" is a study in austerity and an almost masculine stillness.) I had hoped that we would see a more free actress in her native language, and we do! She flutters and tosses her hair, she is a Countess reveling in her earthy affair. This is a full bodied performance.
Farley Granger's performance, whether in response to Valli, or just given a really meaty bad-boy to play, is a total revelation. (AND THIS IS FARLEY Granger, the same actor Hitchcock used in "Strangers on a Train" and "Rope.") He is lusty and sexy, provocative, pouty and passionate. In one scene, he greets her by wordlessly grabbing her hand and almost devouring it with kisses. This is a rare film where both the woman AND the man have real powerhouse roles. The confrontation scene at the end is gripping.
A small but pivotal role is played by Marcella Mariani. Her cow-like leadenness, laced with sisterhood, bespeaks a worldliness that, paired with her ethereal youthful beauty is just wrenching. All supporting roles, especially the maids, are interesting and give a sense of intrigue throughout.
There ARE mistakes on the box. As mentioned, this IS Farley Granger, but he is listed on the box as English (he is American), and Alida Valli is listed as French (she is Italian).
The outcome of one major plot point is cut out (apparently by Italian censors of the time) which leaves you wondering... "but what happened with that?" Still, the major story is the romance, which I think will be satisfying for men as well as women, because both sides are given such full emotional life. This is an enjoyable, big emotion, epic wartime romance.
The expected consequences of a passion!.......2005-12-22
Tragic drama around a noblewoman who sacrifices her marriage when she loves a handsome but cowardly young officer. Lavishly produced and superbly photographed.
When many people expected Visconti continued his variants about the Neo Realist tendency (La terra trema, Bellisima) the director withdrew deliberately to face a work epoch, placed in the War between Italy and Austrian, with the Venetian territory in dispute(1866). The three points of support for Senso will be then, the Great Italian Opera, the historic novel(in the same line of Parma ` s Nun `s Stendhal) and a visible intention of social critic, clearly Marxist. The intrigue is centered around three well definite characters: The Italian and idealist patriot Usoni (Massimo Giroti), the cynic Austrian officer Franz Mahler (Farley Grainger) and the Italian Countess Livia (Alida Valli), who finally betrays her cause, falling in love with Franz and becomes humiliated.
The multiple problems Visconti had to face embraced twenty years. Initially he wanted to Ingrid Bergman and Marlon Brando as central couple. In the middle of the filming the photograph died in an accident and was substituted by Robert Krasker, because he needed an expert in Technicolor. The planed title was Custozza, that alludes to a lost battle by Italians (Jun 24 1866) but this idea was immediately rejected by the Producer Empress, the Italian Government and the censure. The final was changed , when Mahler is declared deserter instead of shot, as well the cut of a sequence in which a drunk soldier cries: "Long live to Austria."
After having been presented in Venice Festival the film suffered other additional cuts. Finally the film was exhibited in 1968 in new York with a running time of 125 min.
Alida Valli as you know has been the greatest actress Italian has produced ever, and in spite of the close similitude with its Russian homologue, Anna Karenina, the picture is provided with a dignity at the same level that his director.
Do not miss this jewel of the Italian Cinema.
Be Careful Before You Buy This!.......2005-02-18
Last year I spent over $55.00 for a pristine, still shrink wrapped copy of Senso on dvd. What I DIDN'T originally know was that the dvd was multiregional, coming from Brazil, in the original Italian language with subtitles ONLY in Portugese! Unless you are fluent in either Italian or Portugese, you will be spending a high price on a dvd you will never watch. If the Amazon.com Seller had notified me before my purchase that the dvd had no English subtitles before they so willingly took my money, of course I would have saved my cash. Adding insult to injury, I found MANY copies of the very same dvd on eBay, and they were ALL much cheaper! Take it from a guy who has learned a hard lesson: Before your bank account is charged for this dvd, inquire about it. You will be glad you did.
They don't know what is on the package........2003-03-21
I just bought this film on VHS produced by Fox Lorber Home Video, to my surprise ( or shock ) I found in the box that the leading male actor is Stewart Granger !!!! instead of poor Farley. And this mistake is repeated all over. This is just poor merchandising. It just happens poor Farley gained inmortality by starring in this movie.
The most beautiful film of all times.......2002-08-03
It's difficult to find, in all the history of the cinema, a so beautifull, sugestive and deep work like this masterpiece of Luchino Visconti. Glorius technicolor, a magnificent cast (even Farley Granger, a very limited actor, is splendid here),dialogues by Tennessee Williams and a wonderful historical recreation of the "Risorgimento", plus a musical score by Verdi and Bruckner make this film a permanent pleasure for persons of good taste. In my opinion the best film of Visconti and perhaps the most beautiful film of all times.
