Director: Joanna Sarsby

Like the albatross glimpsed in the beginning of this 10-part, 5-volume series, The Life of Birds quickly takes flight. Sir David Attenborough hosts this unprecedented and extraordinary global look at the magnificent and often curious winged species with which we share our planet. Like the best wildlife shows, The Life of Birds offers a fresh and accessible view of creatures we may take for granted (didn't Alfred Hitchcock warn us about that?). The focus of this series is not on the different bird species, but on bird behavior. Remarkable and awe-inspiring footage preserves the wide range of tools and techniques with which birds fly, hunt for food, attract a mate, hatch their chicks, and defend themselves against predators.
Each volume contains two episodes. Series titles include: "To Fly or Not to Fly?," "The Mastery of Flight," "The Insatiable Appetite," "Meat Eaters," "Fishing for a Living," Signals and Songs," "Finding Partners" (the inevitable mating episode), "The Demands of the Egg," "The Problems of Parenthood," and "The Limits of Endurance." One comedic diversion while watching this series is the Pythonesque (as in Monty) way in which Attenborough pops up in the most remote, most exotic locales. At one point, night-vision cameras capture the rare sight of the nocturnal kiwi as it forages for food on a New Zealand beach. The camera pans to reveal scant paces away our guide shining a flashlight on the nonplussed bird. Attenborough is also the creator of the classic natural-science series The Trials of Life, The Living Planet, and Life on Earth, all of which are also available on video. --Donald Liebenson

Customer Reviews:
Exciting movie on birds.......2007-07-05
I use this movie at work. The three disc set has really interesting information on birds. My favorite is disc two when they talk about bird songs. Great clip of a Lyre bird!! I also bought this DVD set as a Christmas gift for a relative. She really loves birds.
Great watching.......2007-07-03
This is very worth the investment. We'll watch it many times as the years roll by.
Good series but not as good as Mammals and Blue Planet.......2007-06-27
Very informative but like of enough actions like those in the Life of Mammals and The Blue Planet. Compare to the other two, this series seems boring. May be it's the nature of Birds.
Spectacular!! We thought we knew a few things about birds..........2007-06-05
My wife and I have a long and strong interest in birds, with two pet sparrows, other close bird associations, and hundreds of hours soaring with raptors, ravens, swifts, gulls, and pelicans, on our hang gliders and paragliders. Birds have been the main focus of Naomi's artwork. So we expected to enjoy the series but maybe not find a lot of new or surprising information. Wrong! Most of the content so far has been new to us, either species we had never heard of or at least a different angle on the ones we did know something about. After renting and watching half of the first DVD, we ordered the whole set. This will be one of the few that we will watch, and show to friends, over and over.
I can't speak directly for people who think they have no interest in birds, but that should be no deterrent. If you have any interest in the world around you, watch this video.
The videography is breathtaking; narration is great; pacing, story interest, and organization are nearly flawless. Factual, technical, or editing errors are few and trivial. As someone with a long interest and a lot of knowledge in aviation and aerodynamics, I can say that this program gets it right and gets it across in ways that intelligent lay people will grasp in ways that will give them a whole new way of seeing the world around them. I can only assume that the same level of care has been given to less familiar sub-topics. Getting specialized knowledge across to lay audiences without dumbing it down or losing accuracy is a rare and precious art: The Life of Birds is a masterpiece. Attenborough is a charming guide, fun to watch and hear, and not too intrusive. Occasional computer graphics and animations serve a good purpose and are not overdone. There's little or no annoying overdramatization - who needs that when the material is so engrossing and compelling on its own?
If video transfer quality on earlier DVDs or tapes was poor, that problem seems to have been solved. What we've seen is some of the most sparklingly clear video I can think of anywhere. About the only small gripe I have is that the menu navigation and links from one chapter to another are awkward and confusing. But that amounts to a minute or two of annoyance out of hours of pleasure.
One reviewer mentioned missing topics such as bird respiration. Well, it would be nice to cover everything known about birds, but even in 10 hours of video it simply can't be done. And some topics are probably a better fit for books, such as The Sibley Guide to Bird Life & Behavior.
We rented The Life of Birds with high expectations, and the program exceeded them in every imaginable way.
Hooked even a non-birder.......2007-05-15
I purchased this as a gift for my husband, a knowledgeable birder. I had not intended to watch, but from the beginning it was riveting, fascinating, and very thorough in its explanations and observations. The photography is stunning. I didn't expect to like, or even watch, this dvd, but I am very glad I did. I highly recommend it.

"firebirds" flames out fast.......2006-01-25
nicolas cage is good as the wierd lonner type roles and has an oscar to prove it. however this role calls for more than that you have to be a straght arrow and he isn't. not one good part to this film. i was looking at my watch 5 mins. into this mess. tommy lee jones must have needed the money so i can forget his less than 100 % try as nicks trainner and commander. what a waste of time
fire birds.......2005-10-22
good movie, if you thought "Top Gun" was good then you'll probably like this one as well.
Passable entertainment, won't "hurt your brain.".......2005-10-12
I caught "Firebirds" in the theater during my first annual training with the National Guard after a 3 year Active Duty hitch. We were at Corpus Christi Army Depot doing what? Working on helicopters, natch. About 6 of us piled into a taxi and rode downtown to the el-cheapo theater for 90 minutes of cheesy salutes, whacky dialog, goofy actors and some pretty darn good Apache flying.
Is it accurate? No. Ask any Navy F-14 pilot how he felt in 1986 about Tom Cruise's adaptation of reality and he'll say the same thing that a lot of the Army Aviation folks have already said about Firebirds. That's because in Hollywood, in general, if "accuracy" or "correctness" gets in the way of "story," story generally wins out. (The obvious mold-breaker here being "Band of Brothers", but that had more to do with the original story being highly accurate) Heck, Top Gun's technical advisor says he stil has a hard time showing his face at F-14 reunions. But he learned quickly that while some of the things they show in a movie might not be accurate to the people who do it day in and day out, its still a movie and they have to make it look stylish or whatever. How exciting would watching an Apache crew go over their 10-20 minute long startup procedure really be? No, they hop in the aircraft, flip a couple switches, throw their brain buckets on, suddenly the rotor blades are at flight RPM and off they go. I know that's not reality, but I'm not watching this movie for reality.
With Firebirds, sometimes you just have to put your brain in neutral and enjoy Sean Young in a flight suit that is 3 sizes too small, Tommy Lee Jones going "full-tilt boogie for freedom and justice," and Nicholas Cage laying out droll one-liners for a paycheck.
At the very least, in the Spring of 1990, six guys from a National Guard unit in Michigan had a great time in a cheap theater in Texas hollering at the screen, hooting at Sean Young, and cheering when the bad guys go down in flames. What more can you ask for?
Time to go buy the DVD for my "cheesy Saturday afternoon movies" collection.
(Funny side note: When Tommy Lee Jones is doing his early-morning run on the flight line and all of his trainees come running past him, that's the Apache Training Brigade's flight line at Ft. Hood Army Airfield. During the Gulf War, in January 1991, I was there for an Apache course, and our smoke-break area was on the exterior stairs of the hangar pictured in the background at the very start of that scene. Kinda funny how that works!)
Forgettable.......2005-08-20
Since there are plenty of reviews, I will keep this short. I saw this movie in the past and forgot it completely, and recognized a few scenes about 45 minutes in the movie. This is a fair movie that, Yes, is forgettable. I picked this up locally for under seven bucks, and will keep it, but can only rate this movie as average. It is not horrible, but it is not over the top - Not a Top Gun.
Tommy Lee Jones plays a good part, but is a little over the top of a patriot, with some of his gung ho lines. Nick Cage does not come off that great as a cocky pilot - Tom Cruise did it in Top Gun. Sean Young as the woman pilot/love interest for Nick Cage - forget the love interest - does not add much to the story.
This movie is under 90 minutes and does not provide much time for character development or back story. The special effects and chopper runs are very good, but the sound is only in stereo. My amp can decode to NEO 6.1, but unfortunately, the mix for low bass is lacking. They did not re-mix the sound - No house shaking bass rumble of choppers in flight, crashes, and explosions.
Overall, this movie is OK and passable at a bargain bin price or a rental.

John Frankenheimer scored his first success with this, his third theatrical feature and his second collaboration with producer-star Burt Lancaster (they would make five films together all told). Lancaster delivers an angry, brooding performance as real-life criminal Robert Stroud, a violent killer who, while in solitary confinement, became an internationally recognized authority on birds and their diseases. Based on the book by Thomas E. Gaddis, Frankenheimer creates a portrait of a withdrawn, antisocial prisoner who discovers his own potential after reluctantly rescuing a wounded sparrow from a storm and nursing it back to health. Lancaster's quiet portrayal comes from his eyes and restrained body language, earning him his second Oscar nomination. Costars Telly Savalas (as the talkative "neighbor" from the cell next door) and Thelma Ritter (as his controlling mother) were also nominated, but Frankenheimer's sensitive direction draws equally fine performances from Neville Brand, playing against type as the prison guard who slowly befriends Stroud, and Karl Malden as the tough warden whose ideas of confinement and punishment prompted Stroud to follow-up his studies of birds with a treatise on prison reform. This somber, subdued tale offers no truly happy ending, but it does present a powerful portrait of one man's efforts to earn back his dignity and respect in the worst of conditions. --Sean Axmaker
Description
How does bitter convict Robert Stroud cope with a lifetime of solitary confinement? The answer, in a sense, comes from abovein the form of a feeble sparrow he finds in the isolation yard. Stroud brings this newfound companion to his cell, nurses it to health and, from that point on, there's no turning back. Despite having only a third-grade education, and no hope of parole, Stroud becomes a renowned ornithologistand achieves a greater sense of freedom and purpose behind prison walls than many in the outside world will ever know. The "finest prison picture ever made" (Variety), this inspirational and compelling classic stars Burt Lancaster in an OscarÂ(r)-nominated* performance as Stroudthe convict who, in his power to heal birds, finds the power to heal himself. *1962: Actor
Customer Reviews:
Birdman of Alcatraz.......2007-06-27
Based on the book by Tom Gaddis, who first told Stroud's remarkable story to the world, this involving tale of a caustic, antisocial man whose prison cell becomes a veritable bird sanctuary is beautifully directed by Frankenheimer. Lancaster's brooding, restrained performance steers clear of gushing sentiment, earning him an Oscar nod. Malden is excellent, too, as the peeved warden who makes it his duty to "punish" Stroud--and who gets his chance when the birdman gets transferred to "the Rock." Oscar nominees Thelma Ritter (as Harvey's mom) and Telly Savalas (as fellow inmate Feto Gomez) raise the film a notch with colorful supporting work. This "Birdman" flies high.
oh if i had the wings of a canary over these prison walls i would fly ..........2007-03-30
poor burt lancaster had just won an oscar 2 years before, and he was running up against gregory peck, peter o'toole, marcello mastroianni, and jack lemmon (robert preston in "music man" wasnt even nominated!) so truth be told he really had no chance of winning in this marvelous semi-accurate biopic of murderer-turned-ornithologist robert stroud. while the movie takes considerable liberties with the facts (stroud was much more an SOB than the sympathetic character lancaster portrays) it is on its own terms an eloquent argument for fairness -- even for those barely meriting same. strong supporting performances from karl malden, thelma ritter, and the still-hairy-headed telly savalas. good picture.
Etched in my mind.......2007-02-04
This is one of those movies that I first saw as a boy in the '60's and would watch every chance I got, which was 2-3 times. It's on PBS tonight so I'm excited to see it again.
Birdman of Alcatraz.......2007-01-10
I purchased the DVD for my brother, as a Christmas present. It has been many years since I have seen it, but remember that it was a very good movie. My brother whom I bought the DVD for, raves about the movie.
"Take a Bite Out of the Stars for Me".......2006-08-27
This classic B&W film, one of nearly 80 flicks made by the ever-versatile Lancaster (1913-94), bears the sober and important distinction of NOT being true-to-life, to the real Robert "Birdman" Stroud, who was a vicious and dangerous man who deserved to die in prison. Nevermind. It's an inspirational story that shows the potential for a human being to evolve and maintain his integrity under dreadful circumstances.
Since 1962 when the film was made, our prison system hasn't changed one iota. Rehabilitation is a matter of luck, not public policy, with recidivism rates climbing. Viewed as a social document of the sixties, it parallels the terrible Attica riots, and shows the corruptibility of everyone, a microcosm of life. Stroud's place as a genius in the avian world is the most exciting facet of the movie. He enters prison as a defiant young killer with no manners or humility who develops himself through his self-taught absorption into the biology of the caged bird. Through his love of birds, he comes to love himself and fellow man, and in his characteristically flat tones speaks to one of the birds he sets free, "Take a bite out of the stars for me."
Because of his truly homicidal nature, Robert Stroud himself could never be set free, but was allowed later in life to roam among the meadows of a locked facility until his death. Superb love angle with his wife, whom he insisted on setting free, and the contrast against his own jealous mother, whose motives he finally began to understand. Remember, this is a deep movie about self-understanding.
Also filled with other meaningful characterizations - and hello there, Telly Savalas & Karl Malden, nice to see you both again!

After nearly 200 episodes of the broadcast series and several theatrical features, the fans still wanted more of Rumiko Takahashi's Urusei Yatsura ("Those Obnoxious Aliens"): Inaba the Dreamer (1985) marked the debut of the OVAs. Shinobu is pondering what the future may hold, when a boy in a rabbit suit literally lands at her feet. Inaba is a member of the Destiny Production Management Bureau, and when he drops a "subspace key," Shinobu, Lum, and Ataru get a peek at their future lives. By passing through various doors, they see which friends they might end up marrying. None of these futures looks very promising--but none of them may be the real future. An odd mixture of fantasy, sci-fi, and Alice in Wonderland, Inaba the Dreamer offers some funny moments, but the brief running time (57 minutes) keeps the filmmakers from really exploring the comic possibilities. The disc is subtitled, but not dubbed. (Rated 13 and older: cartoon violence, minor profanity) --Charles Solomon

I saw PRO-FANITY!!.......2005-06-26
I loved this, but even though I would give it 5 stars, it deserves 4, because Lum was called a BITCH of all dirty things! I think they could have made something better! A rated 12 and up!
essential prequel for Urusei Yatsura #5.......2005-04-12
I haven't seen the DVD yet, so this review is based upon my having the Japanese laser disc as well as seeing the world premiere in Meguro Public Hall in Tokyo Japan back in July 1987.
Although released in video as an OVA, it was originally shown in film to members of Kitty Animation Circle who went to the 1987 KAC taikai. It tells the Inaba-kun story in the manga, and is a prequel to the "Boy Meets Girl" story in the final manga volume, which was subsequently animated as "Urusei Yatsura Kanketsuhen" ("final story).
I hope that this DVD contains the uncut version shown at the KAC taikai; the LD release had several scenes cut and consequently was several minutes shorter.
Here's a brief summary of the story that I wrote in 1987:
Shinobu, Ataru, and Lum get involved with what appears to be a man in a rabbit suit, named Inaba-kun ("kun" is a man's word, like "san" but less formal). They end up in space surrounded by many doors. Each door is a possible path of fate. They all scatter to find their ideal fate, but their hopes are dashed.
In one fate, Ataru marries Shinobu and fathers Kokeru, Lum marries Rei, and Ran is even more spiteful and evil than before. In another fate, Rei and Ran are married, but Lum marries Mendou and Ataru is his servant. etc. etc.
Inaba-kun offers to let them create their ideal fates by creating their own door-knobs to as yet incomplete doors. Shinobu's is heart-shaped, Lum's has a tiger pattern, and Ataru's has a star (Moroboshi = "all stars"). Before they can use them, they are captured by the other rabbit people, who prepare to boil Inaba-kun alive for letting mortals control fate. They reckoned without Shinobu's strength when angry, and the gang escapes.
They immediately seek to try their knobs, but they are again ambushed by the other rabbit people, and Lum's knob is lost. Ataru escapes with his knob, and uses it. He sees himself surrounded by every girl he has ever wanted, all in eager attendance upon him. All except Lum -- he forgot to include her in his "ideal" fate! He sees his older self in tears at not having Lum. Ataru flees the scene, removes the knob, and discards it.
We see Shinobu's ideal fate; an older Ataru is still chasing after girls, and an older Lum (dressed like Lum's mother) is pursuing him with lightning bolts. In other words, Shinobu's ideal fate is for nothing to change, and she expresses complete satisfaction with it. She is a sensible girl.
Meanwhile, Lum is furious at Ataru and is chasing him around the doors of fate. The rabbit people are trying to catch the gang, but only end up getting fried by one of Lum's lightning bolts. They are getting truly pissed! Finally, they send a hail of doors at the gang, who end up getting buried under the rubble.
They eventually get out, and we see yet another fate; it is outside a church, and all the Tomobiki people are there to be at Lum's wedding. The groom is clearly Ataru, but we never see his face... This fate is also destroyed by the rabbit people
Presently, the gang is on the run again from the rabbit people, and Inaba-kun pushes them back through the door to Tomobiki and seals it. Evidentally, he makes his peace with the rabbit people, because the last scene is of him back at work, maintaining the doors of fate. He sees something; it is Lum's lost doorknob. He picks it up, puts it on a door, and walks on.
In the KAC magazine shortly thereafter, a Japanese reviewer criticized the film, saying that the producer did not truly understand the love between Ataru and Lum. Specifically, in the scene right after the door with the marriage of Lum and Ataru is destroyed, Lum and Ataru just hold themselves, suggesting that their love is ordinary; but if it is ordinary, why do they quarrel so much and why would Ataru give up his dream of a harem? The reviewer felt that this was an inconsistency and not in accord with the original author's intentions.

Life List is a warm-hearted and lyrical documentary that examines the philosophies, motivations, and field behaviors of two different birders, one a young college student in Minnesota and the other a retired social worker in Arizona. The film compares and contrasts the birding experiences of these individuals, focusing on the social and competitive aspects of the sport of birding, and the value of keeping records of all the birds they have seen.
