If you're a fan of Ken Burns PBS documentaries such as The Civil War and Lewis & Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery, then you'll want to add New York, produced by Ken's brother Ric, to your collection. This exhaustively thorough documentary chronicles the evolution of the city from its time as a Dutch settlement in the early 17th century to its current status as megalopolis extraordinaire. Famous New Yorkers including Martin Scorsese, Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, Fran Lebowitz, Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, and former mayor Ed Koch lend their colorful local perspective. In addition, there's commentary by numerous historians and writers, most notably Pulitzer Prize-winning Mike Wallace (not of 60 Minutes fame, but rather author of Gotham) and the late Brendan Gill, who notes the distinctly capitalist foundation of the city. As he succinctly states, "New York was based upon greed." There's no mistaking that this is a Burns documentary; the story is told through the now-familiar mosaic of images, interviews, music, and narrative chronicling past events. However, there are noticeable differences in the two brothers' style. While Ken Burns tends to linger over his subject matter and personalize it, Ric is more focused on the task of recounting the events in chronological order. New York is also more upbeat, as it thankfully does not employ the tiresome, whining violin dirges of which brother Ken is so fond. You don't have to be a fan of New York City to enjoy this PBS production. You just have to enjoy the experience of discovering history through the popular Burns documentary style. --William Carr

Product Description

Bellydance Basics & Beyond is a 2 hr. 20 min. program designed to teach the fundamental movements of bellydance and encourage their practice in a wide range of dance combinations.

Jenna's methodical presentation of bellydance basics begins with POSTURE, the foundation on which dance movement is built. The BASIC ARMS section teaches you how to maintain and enhance a beautiful elongated body line through graceful positioning of the arms and hands.

WARMUP includes select dance moves and dynamic stretches and is designed as a light total-body workout.

The FOOTWORK section lays the foundation for traveling steps, focusing on a number of patterns, such as basic walk, 2-step and triple step traveling and ways to change directions.

ISOLATIONS of shoulders, ribcage and hips are building blocks of bellydance movement. Jenna breaks down slides, lifts, drops, arcs and sharp accents. Some of these elements are dance moves in their own right, and others help to form compound moves.

COMPOUND MOVES are the essential vocabulary of bellydance - circles, undulations and figure 8s. Jenna's technique of building them from the smallest and most basic elements up, ensures that they are performed with effortless grace. Next, Jenna shows how to layer simple and compound moves on top of TRAVELING steps.

PRACTICE COMBINATIONS offer five 5-minute practice sessions made from many exciting bellydance combinations. As you follow Jenna, you can listen to the music together with her verbal cues or you can select the music-only option. This section offers a series of excellent technique drills and can be combined with the WARMUP for a fantastic 30-minute moderate workout. The last session contains stretches and can serve as a cooldown.

4 out of 5 stars Great content, a must for beginners BUT needs more fun/music!.......2007-06-18

The reason I bought this DVD was because many other reviewers said it was a very good basic to intermediate instructional video for belly dancing.

As per other reviewers, this DVD delivers. Jenna is very thorough when going over the different types of bellydance movements, and really takes the time to correct easy-to-make mistakes, something absent in many other dance/instructional videos. She also takes the time to go over correct posture which seems to be one of the most essential elements in making bellydancing look beautiful.

I was a student of ballet for 8+ years and this DVD views like a legitimate dance class all by itself. That is what I like most about the DVD.

The only reason why this loses a star is because I GET TOO BORED BEFORE THE VIDEO IS OVER!

There's so much instruction to get through that i have never made it straight through the DVD. I wish there was at least some music or SOMETHING while Jenna is going over the basic moves, but there's nothing.

This product definitely has a lot of value, but I absolutely need another video that's just a little more fun.

5 out of 5 stars good for learning.......2007-06-13

This dvd has alot of information. It's easy to follow and very good instructional practice. I highly recommend it. It's also very lengthy and well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful DVD.......2007-06-12

I just started studying belly dancing a few months ago. This instructional DVD makes clear the basic techniques I am learning in class. I would highly recommend this DVD to anyone interested in learning belly dancing.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT Starter DVD!.......2007-06-11

I have tried several other Belly dance dvd's and this one is the best! I took ballet for many, many years so I know how dance classes should be. I really appreciated that Jenna does the teaching in front of a full length mirror, that way , you are able to see how each new technique should look front AND back! She also gives a complete description of each step and which muscles to use which is invaluable for learning the correct techniques. I had originally purchased all the Goddess Life DVDs to begin learning and they were OK, but if I were to do it over, I would start with Jenna's DVD and learn the correct foundations then do the Goddess Life or which ever others.

5 out of 5 stars Buy it!.......2007-06-09

Good replacement for those who can't make a class. The mirrors show every angle and she is careful to explain every step. Wonderful and necessary addition to anyone wanting to learn bellydance.

When egghead Scotty Smalls moves to town just before the summer vacation of 1962, his first priority is to make friends. He heads to the nearby sandlot only to humiliate himself before the local kids, but star player Benny "The Jet" Rodriguez befriends the awkward boy, teaches him the basics of baseball, and welcomes him to the team. It's a summer filled with camaraderie and fun until Smalls hits his first home run. Problem is, Smalls's home run sends his stepfather's "Babe Ruth" autographed baseball into a neighboring yard that's patrolled by a snarling, slobbering monster called "The Beast." Creativity reigns and hilarity ensues when the boys risk everything to retrieve the ball. A final heroic encounter with "The Beast" and his owner yields some very surprising results. Action, humor, and friendship permeate this 101-minute film appropriate for ages 5 and older. Rated PG due to name-calling and some pubescent behavior. --Tami Horiuchi

Description

It's the early 1960s and fifth-grader Scotty Smalls (Tom Guiry) has just moved into town with his folks (Karen Allen and Denis Leary). Kids call him a dork—he can't even throw a baseball! But that changes when the leader of the neighborhood gang recruits him to play on the nearby sandlot field. It's the beginning of a magical summer of baseball, wild adventures, first kisses, and fearsome confrontations with the dreaded Beast and its owner (James Earl Jones) who live behind the left field fence. Soon nine boys have become best friends, Scotty is part of a team, and their leader has become a local legend in this hilarious and warmhearted comedy.

He is 7. We watched it once awhile ago. He talked so much about that great movie with the big dog that I finally sent him one of his own!

5 out of 5 stars A Classic, lots of laughs!.......2007-05-07

Great movie for a baseball lover or someone who loves to laugh!

I had this on VHS for a bit and was glad when it was releasedon DVD. Now it will last FOR-EV-ERR!

5 out of 5 stars A funny and classic baseball-worship kind of movie.......2007-04-12

Scotty Smalls moves to Los Angeles in the early 60's just two weeks before the 5th grade school year ends, which isn't enough time to make friends before summer vacation. He's still getting used to his new step-father and doesn't know how to catch or throw a baseball, and to make matters worse doesn't even know who the "Great Bambino" is. Some of the neighborhood kids gather every day at "the sandlot," their own personal baseball kingdom, and he tries to casually join them. But it isn't until Bennie Rodriguez, the best and most ardent player of them all, asks him to join and gives him the confidence he needs to learn to play. It makes for the best summer of his life and lifelong friendships, especially when he unknowingly uses a baseball signed by Babe Ruth, and hits it over the fence into the yard of "The Beast," a huge baseball-eating dog.

This is one of those classic baseball-worship movies on a par with "Field of Dreams" and other favorites. Plus, it's a great family movie with few profanities - it's funny and the things the kids do and say resonate with everyone whether or not you grew up playing another sport or in another time period. My kids love to watch it regularly, and I'm impressed with how good some of the children actors are (James Earl Jones also has a bit part at the end). I especially like the scene where they play baseball against the "rich kids" on their real baseball field (mostly because it's the field where I played Little-League as a kid - which wasn't on the "rich" side of town and it's not really LA!), but my kids like the pool scene.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent movie for young baseball players.......2007-03-31

Bought this for my 8 year old grandson for his birthday and although he never heard of it, he absolutely loved it and had to go out and buy the Sandlot 2 right away! Nice, clean, fun with a learning behind it (of course).

4 out of 5 stars NOT A BASEBALL FAN, BUT GOOD MOVIE.......2007-03-26

IM NOT A BIG BASEBALL FAN SO TO ME THIS MOVIE WAS OK. THE ACTORS ARE REALLY GOOD AND THEY MAKE IT AN EXCITING MOVIE TO WATCH EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT A BASEBALL FAN! THE BEST PART IS THE "KISS"

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars NYC Ballet Workouts 1 & 2.......2007-07-05

I really enjoyed the workouts. It is not so much an aerobic workout though. The stretches are great. It is like taking a ballet class but you do not use a bar. The 2nd Workout was a little more aerobic b/c you did a routine at the end. It is not like taking a real ballet class b/c a real class is more aerobic but the stretches and positions are very similar to taking ballet.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Workout I've Ever Had.......2007-07-04

This workout video is the greatest I have ever used! Whether you haven't had a good workout in 10 years, or whether you are a toned athlete, this workout provides a fun challenge with attainable goals. The better toned and flexible you become, the closer your form matches the dancers, the more your muscles are worked and the better your body gets. There seems to be no limit to improvement and the video offers enough variety to keep you engaged for long stretches at a time.

2 out of 5 stars Hmmm - not for me.......2007-06-12

I read the other reviews and yes, it is a lovely DVD, lots of pretty people and soothing voice over. And yes, if you're a professional dancer then this may be a great DVD for you...however, if you're not and you're looking for a nice workout with ballet focus then this may not be for you. I studied ballet for years and even have a barre in my home, so I'm always looking for a workout that lets me utilize this type of workout. I found this DVD to be a little too slow, too "arty" and too advanced for most. If you're just starting out or are just looking for something to add to another workout program then I'd recommend avoiding this DVD and going for a more integrated workout like pilates or callenetics.

5 out of 5 stars Not for busy persons.......2007-05-12

Great DVDs but only for holiday, no way you can do the programs during the week (if you have a full-time job or school). Is too slow, but I give it 5 stars because it is thorough and indeed complete.

4 out of 5 stars Good stretching workout.......2007-05-02

I have no dancing background at all, but have done many exercise videos over the years. I am not bored yet with disc1, so haven't tried 2 yet. After doing this dvd about 10 times I can get thru segment 10 or 11 pretty well (of 17) and my flexibility has improved, even over my previous yoga experience.

There are 2 flaws that kept it from getting 5 stars:
(1) the prompting is inconsistent as far as whether you're doing left or right in several places, and the camera angle will sometimes shift to another view which is the opposite leg when you shouldn't have shifted yet.
(2) they force you to watch the 5 min intro every time, or to pick individual pieces one at a time.

Gangs of New York may achieve greatness with the passage of time. Mixed reviews were inevitable for a production this grand (and this troubled behind the scenes), but it's as distinguished as any of director Martin Scorsese's more celebrated New York stories. From its astonishing 1846 prologue to the city's infernal draft riots of 1863, the film aspires to erase the decorum of textbooks and chronicle 19th-century New York as a cauldron of street warfare. The hostility is embodied in a tale of primal vengeance between Irish American son Amsterdam Vallon (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his father's ruthless killer and "Nativist" gang leader Bill "the Butcher" Cutting (Daniel Day-Lewis, brutally inspired), so named for his lethal talent with knives. Vallon's vengeance is only marginally compelling; DiCaprio is arguably miscast, and Cameron Diaz (as Vallon's pickpocket lover) is adrift in a film with little use for women. Despite these weaknesses, Scorsese's mastery blossoms in his expert melding of personal and political trajectories; this is American history written in blood, unflinching, authentic, and utterly spectacular. --Jeff Shannon

1 out of 5 stars Gangs of Sound Stage 6 .......2007-06-25

I agree with those reviewers who've seen through this movie. Under the period costumes and the periodic bursts of graphic violence, "Gangs of New York" is a set-bound bore. Bad dialogue, worse accents, and a cliched, spaghetti-Western plot. But, Gogol, if you're going to diss "Once Upon a TIme in America," as innovative a gangster movie as "The Godfather," at least blame the guy who did make it -- Sergio Leone -- not a guy who didn't -- Scorsese.

4 out of 5 stars Pure Entertainment.......2007-06-07

I was surprised by how enjoyable this movie is. It's just fun and if you're looking for a history lesson from a Hollywood movie, then you obviously know nothing about the American entertainment industry. Read a book. I held off watching this for a long time because I'm not terribly fond of Day-Lewis or DiCaprio. Also, I was wary of watching Cameron Diaz try to act. Finally, the movie bombed at the box office to a chorus of boos and some scathing reviews. Admittedly, this isn't Scorsese's best. The movie is too long, the script is a mess as it sags in spots and jumps around in others and DiCaprio is dubiously cast but he performs well enough. Diaz can't act but she is easy on the eyes. The dialogue lacks the resonance of better epics. In the end, Gangs is just a typical period piece revenge story with the emphasis on costumes, mayhem, and cheerfully swaggering overacted performances. Sort of Braveheart and Gladiator go to NYC in the mid 1800's.

5 out of 5 stars very happy.......2007-05-07

I was very happy to get the Cd that I sent for..........Again it came very fast,I enjoy it very much.......... thank you for giving us Cd's that we can order very fast. I just love Leonardo Dicaprio

1 out of 5 stars Yawn!.......2007-04-23

Has nobody seen through Scorseses weak plots yet? He makes one exellent gangster film (Goodfellas which after all was based on a book) then repeats the same formula for almost every other film. So we have the Italian mafia in Goodfellas, the Jewish mafia in Once upon a time, back to the Italians but change location for Casino and now we have the Irish and 'native' mafia. So what next for Scorsese when he runs out of ethnic groups for his mafia films?

This film lacks everything. Loosely based on historical facts its slow, dull and only made vaguely interesting by the odd input of horrific violence (just as all of his gangster films are, the start of Goodfellas, the baseball bat scene in Casino etc)

Sorry but this film lacks everything.

2 out of 5 stars Overblown melodrama.......2007-02-17

When this film came out, I knew it was going to be in deep trouble because of the hype connected to it and director Martin Scorsese's almost endless appearances on the talk show circuit.
The problem isn't in the sets or costuming, both of which are excellent, but rather lies mainly in the almost incoherent, plotless script the actors were saddled with. Historically about as accurate as a Ritz Brothers film, it confabulates various New York events and characters into a hopeless mishmash of misbegotten melodrama.
Special notice should be taken of Daniel Day-Lewis' scenery-chewing performance, which was uniformly terrible. Perhaps I being a bit harsh considering the odiousness of the script, yet the other actors at least managed to rise above the high school play level that marked Day-Lewis' effort.
As to this 2 DVD set, it annoyed me that I had to change DVDs to see the entire film.
The extras included contain all the frenzied hype that surrounded the pre-release of the film and are enjoyable, if you like that sort of thing.
The quality of the digital transfer to DVD was excellent.
Someday there will be a great movie about this turbulent era in New York City but this, unfortunately, isn't it.

The Yoga sessions focus on building lower body strength and opening the hips to achieve ease and precision in bellydance hipwork. A number of exercises open the chest and increase back flexibility to enhance torso isolations and make dance movement sinuous and fluid.

Bellydance technique drills (75 min.) include hipwork, upper body work, combined hips/upper body isolations and arms/hips coordination. They also include adding level changes to torso isolations and layering hipwork on traveling steps.

The style of Ariellah's choreographic work is contemporary Tribal Fusion bellydance. She breaks down 6 combinations, step-by-step, consisting of multiple movements and transitions. The combination sequence forms a choreography, practiced to two different songs, to encourage creative adaptation of steps and transitions set to music.

The performance section offers 3 spectacular Tribal Fusion / Gothic bellydance performance pieces.

The progam is set to ethereal ambient and club music with a flavor of magic and dark myst

5 out of 5 stars Best bellydance instruction.......2007-07-06

I own many bellydance instruction videos...This one is great.

It is extremely long BUT is separated into sections so you can do just the parts you want to. I'm not into yoga so I can skip all that. Want to work on form? That's broke out into body parts. Want to learn combinations? This is also split into sections.

Ariellah's instruction on form is very informative. She tends to tell and demonstrate precisely...and why you should do it the way she says.

5 out of 5 stars Great lessons!.......2007-07-06

Absolutely fantastic lessons on bellydancing! Easy to follow, but definitely take practice for beginners to actually do. I'm using muscles I didn't know I had - probably didn't! Nice yoga stretches that are logical preludes to the lesson.
For someone not interested in the Goth genre, the music is fine, more fun than most exercise type videos.
Excellent teacher!

5 out of 5 stars Great DVD.......2007-06-27

I love this DVD! It breaksdown the most common bellydancing moves into very basic steps. Great for a none dancer such as myself.

3 out of 5 stars contemporary bellydance by ariellah.......2007-06-17

I was pretty dissapointed with this dvd, actually. It's pretty boring. I can barely get through about 15 minutes before i have to stop watching- her voice is boring, and I expected her to have a lot more energy on this one. I gave it three stars because there is a lot of drilling and yoga, though I don't really like the yoga sets myself. Over all, I would not buy this one.

5 out of 5 stars I love this dvd!.......2007-06-13

I really love this dvd. It's definitely one of my favorites. Easy to follow and love the music, feels like I am at the club! Ariellah is beautiful. I highly recommend this.

Amazon.com essential video

Over the course of three nights at Hollywood's Pantages Theater in December 1983, filmmaker Jonathan Demme joined creative forces with cinematographer Jordan Cronenweth and Talking Heads... and miracles occurred. Following a staging concept by singer-guitarist David Byrne, this euphoric concert film transcends that all-too-limited genre to become the greatest film of its kind. A guaranteed cure for anyone's blues, it's a celebration of music that never grows old, fueled by the polyrhythmic pop-funk precision that was a Talking Heads trademark, and lit from within by the geeky supernova that is David Byrne.

The staging--and Demme's filming of it--builds toward an orgasmic release of music, rising from the bare-stage simplicity of Byrne, accompanied only by a boom box on "Psycho Killer," to the ecstatic crescendo of "Burning Down the House," by which time the Heads and additional personnel have all arrived on stage for a performance that seems channeled from heaven for the purpose of universal uplift. (God bless Demme for avoiding shots of the luckiest audience in '80s pop history; its presence is acknowledged, but not at the viewer's expense.) With the deliriously eccentric Byrne as ringleader (pausing mid-concert to emerge in his now-legendary oversized suit), this circus of musical pleasure defies the futility of reductive description; it begs to be experienced, felt in the heart, head, and bones, and held there the way we hold on to cherished memories. On those three nights in December 1983, Talking Heads gave love, life, and joy in generous amounts that years cannot erode, and Demme captured this act of creative goodwill on film with minimalist artistic perfection. Stop Making Sense is an invitation to pleasure that will never wear out its welcome. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars A classic concert performance enhanced.......2007-07-01

I bought this for my nephew to introduce him to my generation of music favorites. Pleasantly surprised by the add-ons included in the DVD which didn't come with the video when I got it years ago. Still a concert worth watching repeatedly. Glad to have the DVD bonus material.

5 out of 5 stars The next best thing to being there.......2007-06-24

Jonatham Demme's concert film captures the Talking Heads at the height of their powers in 1983. Fans of the band will not be disappointed, and I don't think anyone else who comes to this film with an open mind, open ears, and open eyes will, either. It begins with David Byrne alone on a bare stage, where he performs an acoustic version of "Psycho Killer" with a boom box providing the percussion. The band members and supporting musicians come on stage, set up, and join in during succeeding numbers as the music becomes steadily more layered until we arrive at the explosively exhuberant performance of "Burning Down the House" that ends the picture. Byrne's quirky personality, the exquisite musicianship of the band, the varied influences of the songs, and everyone's sheer love of making music are on full display here. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Is this MY Beautiful DVD?.......2007-06-13

This recorded concert of David Byrne and The Talking Heads may not be the greatest concert ever captured on film (as the DVD jacket claims it to be) - but it's a very good concert.

The concert includes many of the classics Byrne is known for as well as several songs I hadn't heard before. The DVD should have made captioning available for the songs though, because, as with a lot of music of the past few decades, the words get smothered by the amplification, by crowding the mike, and by the background wall of sound. And with Byrne especially, you want to hear the words. He is the e.e.cummings of rock lyrics - skewering, lamenting the humdrumness that people work themselves into. His "Once In A Lifetime" is like cummings' "Anyhow Town."

The lighting is well-done and evocative though, and conveys the mood of the songs even when you can't hear all the lyrics.

But best of all is the choreography. Byrne once again transforms himself into a live and lanky puppet, yanked on my unseen strings, buffeted and punched by forces that remain hidden behind-the-scenes. Several of his background singers are equally talented at that loose-limbed sort of pantomime. They become masters of topsy Terpsichore. They hang it like rag doll prizefighters - never quite getting the best of their opponents, but getting their licks in nonetheless.

5 out of 5 stars el mejor concierto grabado, por mucho.......2007-06-08

"I put the grrr in swinger, baby!" a deliciously randy Austin Powers coos near the beginning of The Spy Who Shagged Me, and if the imagination of Austin creator Mike Myers seems to have sagged a bit, his energy surely hasn't. This friendly, go-for-broke sequel to 1997's Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery finds our man Austin heading back to the '60s to keep perennial nemesis Dr. Evil (Myers again) from blowing up the world--and, more importantly, to get back his mojo, that man-juice that turns Austin into irresistible catnip for women, especially American spygirl Felicity Shagwell (a pretty but vacant Heather Graham). The plot may be irreverent and illogical, the jokes may be bad (with characters named Ivana Humpalot and Robin Swallows, née Spitz), and the scenes may run on too long, but it's all delivered sunnily and with tongue firmly in cheek.

Myers's true triumph, though, is his turn as the neurotic Dr. Evil, who tends to spout the right cultural reference at exactly the wrong time (referring to his moon base as a "Death Star" with Moon Units Alpha and Zappa--in 1969). Myers teams Dr. Evil with a diminutive clone, Mini-Me (Verne J. Troyer), who soon replaces slacker son Scott Evil (Seth Green) as the apple of the doctor's eye; Myers and Troyer work magic in what could plausibly be one of the year's most affecting (and hysterically funny) love stories. Despite a stellar supporting cast--including a sly Rob Lowe as Robert Wagner's younger self and Mindy Sterling as the forbidding Frau Farbissina--it's basically Myers's show, and he pulls a hat trick by playing a third character, the obese and disgusting Scottish assassin Fat Bastard. Many viewers will reel in disgust at Mr. Bastard's repulsive antics and the scatological bent Myers indulges in, including one showstopper involving coffee and--shudder--a stool sample. Still, Myers's good humor and dead-on cultural references win the day; Austin is one spy who proves he can still shag like a minx. --Mark Englehart

5 out of 5 stars I know it's a silly movie, but I loved it.......2007-07-05

Having not been that thrilled with the first Austin Powers movie, I was completely surprised that I giggled all the way through this one.

Maybe it was because the female lead is Austin's equal in the free love game. Maybe just because I have loved Micheal York since I was a young teenager and he was in The Three Musketeers. Maybe because Fat Bastard just cracked me up. Ditto for Mini-Me. Or that I finally 'got' Dr. Evil.

Whatever it was, I loved this silly story. You have to be in the right mood for it to hit you the right way, I think, but if you're in that mood, this is a funny movie.

4 out of 5 stars A bit too much at times.......2006-07-25

This is what happens when you get a film that does modest business, but becomes a huge cult sensation once it hits the home audience. You make everything bigger and better and hope the audience eats it up without noticing how empty the film feels at times. Ironically this was also one of the principle flaws of the James Bond series, which Austin Powers chiefly parodies.

Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me lacks the heart of the first film. That may seem like an odd comment for a comedy film like this, but it was really the character-driven bits in the first one (and the third) that kept the comedy bits together. Here the plot feels kinda random and disorganized. There are defnitely some new concepts and gags (Mini-Me!), but a lot also feel recycled. The gags are also a little much this time around, even for someone used to this kind of bathroom humour. I found the gags in the first and third much more clever and entertaining.

So we get a 3 star film, which has flaws but is generally a nice reunion of old characters. The dvd however, presents a lot of great extras that boost the final rating to 4. Lots of hilarious deleted scenes, a great commentary track, music videos, and other fun extras. A lot of care was put into this set and it shows.

The weak link of the Austin Powers trilogy, but worth owning for fans, and worth a rental for those who haven't experienced Austin Powers yet.

5 out of 5 stars Hop on the good foot and do the bad thing.......2006-07-09

Austin Powers (AKA "Sir Austin Danger Powers"), Dr Evil and Fat [...] all played by Mike Myers? Fantastic! The costume and make-up team are second to none.

Verne Troyer as Mini me is great. Not that many other actors could have "filled his shoes". Danny Devito doesn't even come close!

Ivana Humpalot (Kristen Johnston) is a Russian woman sent to kill our hero. As a chess fan I was curious about the direction of this particular game.

Overall, this film is a comedy. You can't expect a Les Miserables plot or the depth of Ben Hur. It's a great laugh for a night in and it achieves what I believe it set out to do.

4 out of 5 stars Dr. Evil's movie.......2006-06-21

This sequal to the first austin powers is not quite as good as the first one, but it's not that bad. Austin power's character has pretty much been reduced to nothing in this movie. Heather Graham's character is just in the movie for eye candy. That leaves Dr. Evil, who pretty much has all of the funny scene's in the movie. Although, I thought the whole thing with him trying to be a rapper was stupid. Fat Bastard's character was ok, but it got dull after a while. Overall: I think you should check it out just for dr. evil's scenes in the movie.

4 out of 5 stars AUSTIN POWERS IS BADDER THAN EVER AND HE'S BACK.......2006-05-08

THE RETURN OF AUSTIN POWERS

STILL A FACETIOUS IRREVERENT LIGHT- HEARTED SATIRE & VERY FUNNY TOO!

IN A NUTSHELL: STILL A BIT TOO MUCH - BUT SO WHAT IF IT WORKS!

Still a bit too facetious, a bit too vulgar, a bit too irreverent, and a bit too overdone. Only now, everything, including Austin's new nemesis FB [also played by Mike Meyers] is supersized. Nevertheless, this comedy still does work and it still pays homage to the original James Bond series, as well as the anglo and american cultures of the 1960s. In the end, "Austin Powers - The Spy Who Shagged Me" is still simply quite effective in its role as a satirical comedy.

HOWEVER THERE ARE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE 1st & 2nd FILMS:

The tone of the film is the same, but more. In doing so, the film has had to rely more on comical set-pieces than the natural progression of a silly satirical story line, as it did in the original film. At times this slows things down or seems to detour the film almost to the point of derailing. Almost, however, is the key word and the film keeps on trucking. Some of these comedic set-pieces are self-contained entertainment in their own right, such as Dr. Evil's duet ["Just The Two Of Us"] with Mini Me, and the commotion in the tent where strange things seemed to be happening within Austin's innards, as seen from outside the tent by Dr. Evil's disgusted henchmen. Or that whole story line involving group family therapy which spilled over to the "Jerry Springer Show" - very effectively silly, irreverent stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Royal Wedding is finally rescued from the public domain.......2007-04-26

This is the second volume of MGM Dream Factory musicals. Only "That's Dancing" and "Royal Wedding" are on DVD already, and those are generally poor public domain copies. The other five features have only been on VHS up to now. I'd put all of these movies except "Belle of New York" at between four and five stars if you are a fan of the MGM musicals of the 40's and 50's. "Belle of New York" I'd put at between three and four stars mainly because the campiness of the entire production gets in the way most of the time. Considering you expect some gimmicks in MGM musicals of this era, that is saying a lot. The extra features, which I got from a press release from Warner Home Video, do look good. This package probably rates 4.5 stars taken as a whole, and I round it up to five. The following are brief descriptions of the films and the special features for each one.

The Pirate (1948) Starring Gene Kelly and Judy Garland. Features music by Cole Porter. A swashbuckling tale is largely just a framework for the music and dancing, which is excellent. Judy Garland plays a girl obsessed with a legendary pirate. Gene Kelly pretends to be that pirate in order to get the girl. This film actually lost money for MGM in its initial release. Today it is interesting because it showcases the talents of Gene Kelly and Judy Garland so well.

That's Dancing! (1985) is a documentary along the same lines as "That's Entertainment" narrated by Gene Kelly along with co-hosts Ray Bolger, Sammy Davis Jr., Mikhail Baryshnikov and Liza Minnelli. The clips of dancing in motion pictures from the 30's to the 80's are very good, but the presentation was lacking somewhat. The narration seems deadpan, and when the narration cuts into the actual dancing numbers it is distracting more than informative.

Words and Music (1948) features lots of stars as themselves performing to the music of Rodgers and Hart. This is a totally fictional account of the lives and careers of Rodgers and Hart. In 1948 the true story would have never made it past the censors, but then the commentary is supposed to clear all of that up.

That Midnight Kiss (1949) Starring Kathryn Grayson and Mario Lanza. This is another MGM musical with a great supporting cast that largely exists for the sake of the music, not the plot. There are some great operatic performances by Lanza who is starring in what turns out to be a pseudo-autobiography.

Toast Of New Orleans (1950) Starring Kathryn Grayson and Mario Lanza. This time Lanza is a fisherman when his talent as a singer is discovered, and he and Grayson are in New Orleans, thus the title. This is a light breezy film with touches of comedy, delivered somewhat surprisingly by Lanza.

Royal Wedding (1951) Starring Fred Astaire and Jane Powell. My favorite film of the group. A brother and sister act perform in England at the time of then Princess Elizabeth's wedding. They both fall in love, thus breaking up the act. This has Astaire's famous performance in which he dances on the walls and ceiling of his London hotel room.

The Belle of New York (1952) Starring Fred Astaire and Vera-Ellen. This is actually a disappointing film considering Astaire is in it. Although Astaire dances more in this film than in most of the others he made, it is just hard to get past the campiness of it all - literally dancing on air, dancing on a horse's back, etc. There is some great music from Harry Warren and Johnny Mercer, though.

If you don't think Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997) is one of the funniest movies of the 1990s, maybe you should be packed into a cryogenic time chamber and sent back to the decade whence you came. Perhaps it was the 1960s--the shagadelic decade when London hipster Austin Powers scored with gorgeous chicks as a fashion photographer by day, crime-fighting international man of mystery by night. Yeah, baby, yeah! But when Powers's arch nemesis, Dr. Evil, puts himself into a deep-freeze and travels via time machine to the late 1990s, Powers must follow him and foil Evil's nefarious scheme of global domination. Mike Myers plays dual roles as Powers and Dr. Evil, with Elizabeth Hurley as his present-day sidekick and karate-kicking paramour. A hilarious spoof of '60s spy movies, this colorful comedy actually gets funnier with successive viewings, making it a perfect home video for gloomy days and randy nights. Oh, behave!

"I put the grrr in swinger, baby!" a deliciously randy Powers coos near the beginning of The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999), and if the imagination of Austin creator Mike Myers seems to have sagged a bit, his energy surely hasn't. This friendly, go-for-broke sequel finds our man Austin heading back to the '60s to keep perennial nemesis Dr. Evil (Myers again) from blowing up the world--and, more importantly, to get back his mojo, that man-juice that turns Austin into irresistible catnip for women, especially American spygirl Felicity Shagwell (a pretty but vacant Heather Graham). The plot may be irreverent and illogical, the jokes may be bad, and the scenes may run on too long, but it's all delivered sunnily and with tongue firmly in cheek. Myers teams Dr. Evil with a diminutive clone, Mini-Me (Verne J. Troyer), then pulls a hat trick by playing a third character, the obese and disgusting Scottish assassin Fat Bastard.

Despite symptoms of sequelitis, Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002) is must-see lunacy for devoted fans of the shagadelic franchise. Unfortunately, the law of diminishing returns is in full effect: for every big-name cameo and raunchy double-entendre, there's an equal share of redundant shtick, juvenile scatology, and pop-cultural spoofery. All is forgiven when the hilarity level is consistently high, and Mike Myers--returning here as randy Brit spy Austin, his nemesis Dr. Evil, the bloated Scottish henchman Fat Bastard, and new Dutch disco-villain Goldmember--thrives by favoring comedic chaos over coherent plotting. Once they've tossed Austin into the disco fever of 1975 (where he's sent to rescue his father, gamely played by Michael Caine), Myers and director Jay Roach seem vaguely adrift with old and new characters, including Verne Troyer's Mini-Me and pop star Beyoncé Knowles as Pam Grier-ish blaxpo-babe Foxxy Cleopatra. A bit tired, perhaps, but Powers hasn't lost his mojo.

3 out of 5 stars Austin Powers is Pure Comedy!.......2007-03-13

I am a fan of all Michael Myers movies. I loved the first two movies of series and am going too buy them soon! Too bad I can't say the same for the third one. The first "Austin Powers" movie is funny and not too crude (4 stars). The second one is funny, but is a little more crude (3 stars) and the third one is nothing but fart jokes (2 stars). If people agree wiht me, don't buy this whole entire series, just buy the first two. If you are a die hard fan, buy the whole pack.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite comedies.......2007-04-07

I Love owning this film because its one of those silly comedies that just gets funnier to me with each watching. just the anticipation of some of the jokes about to happen can make me laugh. Its like an old friend that you share so many private jokes with.you begin to giggle before its even said, even the really stupidest and corny of the lines. Dr. Evil is just so classic and probably my favorite of all of Myers characters.

Anyway, I think its worth letting it grow on you and watching again every few weeks.

whenever I might need a lift I know I can pop this movie in and its got me smiling again .

5 out of 5 stars Classic Comedy -- But Don't Waste Your Time with the Sequels.......2007-04-02

I actually saw "The Spy Who Shagged Me" first, and was mostly bored throughout. There were maybe two funny scenes. I thought to myself, why do people seem to love "Austin Powers" so much? This was pretty lame.

Several months later I caught bits and pieces of the original ("International Man of Mystery") on TV, and found myself laughing at almost every scene! This is why people loved "Austin Powers"! Eventually I'd seen enough to know I needed to own the movie. I bought it on VHS about 5 years ago, and just got the DVD today. It is an absolute classic. I have to rate it among the best comedies of all time. If you haven't seen it yet, you just don't know what you're missing. It is extremely well-written, clever, witty, and with great delivery and timing.

Now, a warning. It is my opinion that the two sequels to this movie amount to a pile of crap. They are cliché, unoriginal, lame movies. If you like the first one, there is absolutely no guarantee you will like the second or third installments. I would recommend you not waste your time with them, period. I personally just try to pretend they don't even exist. That allows me to continue to love "Austin Powers."

5 out of 5 stars Austin Powers, Man of Mystery Indeed!.......2006-11-10

What a film, brilliantly executed, the gags all reach without dragging on. Mike Meyers has done a good job with the script and characterizations as I really haven't laughed this hard in a while--probably since 'Mars Attacks'.

He manages to spoof 'Bond' films tastefully with a comics' aplomb. I fear however, that the mainstream Tom Cruise/Julia Roberts type of fan will miss the point on this one though.

5 out of 5 stars Give your undercarriage a little bit of a "How's your father?".......2006-11-06

The first Austin Powers flick is still funny today, despite several catchphrases ("Do I make you horny, baby?", "Oh, behave!", etc.) having long since worn out their welcome and a duo of redundant, unimaginative sequels. There are two primary reasons why this movie is comic gold:

1. It's the best James Bond spoof you'll ever see. (You can take my word for it: I'm a HUGE 007 fan.)

2. The dialogue crackles with wit and is delivered flawlessly by the cast.

For reference, check out the scene where Dr. Evil struggles to come up with a contemporary scheme that *hasn't* already happened: "Oh, hell. Let's just do what we always do: hijack some nuclear weapons and hold the world hostage."

Or how about when Austin tries to live dangerously by staying at five while playing Blackjack with Number Two. "I SUGGEST you hit, sir!"

Yes, the movie plays to the adolescent crowd sometimes by throwing in a bunch of sex-related jokes, but at least they're clever and often howlingly funny (especially the Swiss-made penis enlarger bit). To the film's credit, there are no gags that go on for too long and the script is very economical.

Very few comedies have a killer-to-filler ratio as high as the first Austin Powers. Buy this DVD.

4 out of 5 stars FACETIOUS IRREVERENT LIGHT- HEARTED SATIRE & VERY FUNNY TOO!.......2006-05-08

IN A NUTSHELL: A BIT TOO MUCH - BUT SO WHAT IF IT WORKS!

A bit too facetious, a bit too vulgar, a bit too irreverent, and a bit too overdone. Nevertheless, this comedy does work and it pays homage to the original James Bond series, as well as the anglo and american cultures of the 1960s. In the end, "Austin Powers - International Man of Mystery" is simply quite effective in its role as a satirical comedy.
