In the original Phantasm, The Tall Man (Angus Scrimm), a villainous mortuary employee, breeds dwarves inside tombs to be "workers" in another realm. Don Coscarelli's film was enticingly cryptic, but Phantasm III is a confused mess. Mike (A. Michael Baldwin) and his big brother, Jody (Bill Thornbury), are recently orphaned and become grossly entangled in the supernatural crime scene occurring at the cemetery, as The Tall Man seeks to kill everyone in town. The boys recruit Jody's buddy, Reggie (Reggie Bannister), an ice cream man, to help squelch The Tall Man, to no avail. In Phantasm III, the same boys, all grown up, are still battling The Tall Man, though his dwarves have multiplied and have wiped out entire cities across Idaho. Zombies prevail, and the viewer never really finds out The Tall Man's purpose, or why he wants to claim Mike. Phantasm's inimitable mystery and style, with the chrome orb that flies towards victim's heads with rotating blades, the finger in a box that bleeds yellow goo, or the tuning fork gate to the dwarf netherworld, is replaced in Phantasm III by schlock gore, in which dwarves are shot with machine guns and felled like trees. Mystery is spoiled by too much dialogue spoken by the before nearly-mute Tall Man, and by the dwarves who've acquired silly monster faces under hoods that previously hid their identity. The film's greatest asset is its wondrously eerie title theme song by Fred Myrow and Malcolm Seagrave, reiterated from the original horror masterpiece. --Trinie Dalton

4 out of 5 stars Underrated sequel.......2007-06-01

Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead, the second sequel to Don Coscarelli's original, cerebral horror flick, picks up right where the second film left off. Reggie (Reggie Bannister) and Mike (A. Michael Baldwin) are still on the run from the seemingly indestructible Tall Man (Angus Scrimm) who is in the process of devestating small towns across the mid-west. In the meantime, he has plans for Mike, which leads Reggie across the country on a rescue mission along with some unlikely allies. Mike's older brother Jody (Bill Thornbury) returns as well, in an unexpected form, to lend a hand too. Like the above Amazon review states, Phantasm III leaves little to the imagination in terms of gore effects, and the story is nowhere near as cerebral as the original Phantasm, but Phantasm III is still a more than solid sequel in Coscarelli's series. The overall story becomes expanded and Coscarelli does a great job tying things together using footage from the original film, and despite some plot holes, just about everything works here. All in all, Phantasm III is a fine and underrated sequel, and once again, thanks to Anchor Bay, such a film gets an equally fine DVD release featuring commentary, behind the scenes, and trailers.

Not as interesting as the original or part IV, but worth watching. The ending sets up #IV nicely.

4 out of 5 stars Blink and you'll miss the unrated footage!.......2007-04-19

I know there's some concern regarding whether this region 1 DVD release is the unrated version as the packaging indicates or the VHS R-rated reissue. I watched both the DVD and VHS versions simultaneously last night as picture-in-picture and there is definitely one noticably extended scene. When Reggie enters the mausoleum and is captured by Rocky and Tanesha, the sentinel punctures into Tanesha's forehead. You now see much more blood pouring out of the sentinel, more screaming and a larger puddle of blood on the floor. This scene runs at least 10-15 seconds longer compared to the R rated version. It's funny to see in the R rated version, no blood is seen pouring out of the sentinel. Other than that, I found no other differences between versions. I know 10-15 seconds doesn't sound like much, but being the sentinel scenes are the standout scenes in these films, they're always the ones that get trimmed. I think those extra seconds make a difference and it's worth the purchase. The DVD looks and sounds great.

4 out of 5 stars what's the difference???.......2007-04-11

I have the VHS R rated version clocking 91 minutes. I just bought the Phantasm 3 DVD from Anchor Bay but the DVD states it's the Unrated Director's Cut on the plastic covering also clocking 91 minutes. So what's the difference? The DVD distributor's will claim it was a printing error but I think it's really a scam. It's probably not unrated at all, just an
R version.

The 18th James Bond adventure was a runaway box-office success when released in 1995, thanks to the arrival of Pierce Brosnan as the fifth actor (following the departure of Timothy Dalton) to play the suave, danger-loving Agent 007. This James Bond is a bit more vulnerable and psychologically complex--and just a shade more politically correct--but he's still a formally attired playboy at heart, with a lovely Russian beauty (Izabella Scorupco) as his sexy ally against a cadre of renegade Russians bent on--what else?--global domination. There's also a seductive villainous with the suggestive name of Xenia Onatopp (Famke Janssen), and the great actress Judi Dench makes her first appearance as Bond's superior, M, who wisecracks about 007's "dinosaur" status as a globetrotting sexist. All in all, this action-packed Bond adventure provided a much-needed boost the long-running movie series, revitalizing the 007 franchise for the turn of the millennium. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Great, GREAT, Film.......2007-06-24

007, Goldeneye is magic in so many ways. First of all, the name is one of the best and most memorable in the series, making it entirely marketable in diverse ways. Second, the acting is stellar, incorporating many recognizable stars into one amazing Bond film. Thirdly, the electronic/lush romantic score by Eric Serra is wonderful. Fourth... Let's just say this is a great film.
PS
My only reservation in reccomending this film are a couple scenes that seem to blur the line between sensuality and violence, (the villianess is a murderer with the style of a black widow.)

2 out of 5 stars Brosnan's best Bond but that isn't saying very much.......2007-02-24

Pierce Brosnan, who did a spectacular job with "The Thomas Crown Affair", makes a surprisingly weak James Bond. He's almost a perfect splicing together of one of the better Bonds, Timothy Dalton, and the all-time worst, Roger Moore. That's too bad because Brosnan is a fairly good actor. If the producers had tried to portray Bond as Dalton and Fleming did, I think he would have done a fairly good job of it. Once again, "The Thomas Crown Affair" demonstrates how good Brosnan can play cool, ruthless and debonair.

The movie itself isn't very good and doesn't really reference Fleming except in the title. They took one plot element from "Moonraker" and that's about all of the Fleming you'll find in "Goldeneye". That's too bad because a lot of Ian Fleming's ideas have never made it to the big screen.

The first four Bonds and OHMSS are fairly faithful to Fleming and that's about it. "Live and Let Die", "Living Daylights" and "For Your Eyes Only" also feature a few of Fleming's ideas but not enough to make them worthwhile.

The new "Casino Royale" had quite a bit of Fleming in it, particularly in the center section of the film. That's a good thing. Remakes of "Live and Let Die", "Moonraker", and "Diamonds Are Forever" would be welcome, particularly if the screenwriters use the Fleming novels as actual launching points, as they did with "Casino Royale".

5 out of 5 stars Brosnan's debut is his best Bond film.......2007-01-25

In "Goldeneye", James Bond, played for the first time by Pierce Brosnan, must prevent an ex-MI6 agent, Alec Trevelyan, from detonating a powerful electromatic pulse, via satellite, over London. The pulse would render all electronics in London totally useless, and Trevelyan would seize that opportunity to electronically rob the Bank Of London. Along the way, Bond is assisted by computer programmer Natalya Simonova, who has extensive knowledge of the goldeneye satellite. Bond's other enemies throughout the movie include Trevelyan's sidekick, Russian General Ouromov (who has betrayed his government); Boris, a computer programmer who was once a comrade of Natalya, but betrayed her; and Zenia Onatopp, a dark, sexually charged woman who takes pleasure in making love, and killing. She especially enjoys killing WHILE making love ;)

The feel of "Goldeneye" is rather dark and serious, although there are comical moments strewn throughout the movie (so it's not quite as stiff as either of Dalton's Bond movies). There are a wide array of characters featured in the movie, all of whom are thoroughly enjoyable, and well written. The actors playing them are especially entertaining to watch. Kudos to Izabella Scorupco, who is not only gorgeous, but plays the part of Natalya very memorably. Famke Janssen is also magnificent as Onatopp, and there has not been any Bond villian quite as quirky or devilish as Onatopp since (what Bond villainess has ever licked Bond's face, and then beaten him up? Just Onatopp!). Pierce Brosnan, of course, fits right in as James Bond, and manages to combine elements of a dark edge with a touch of a light side.

"Goldeneye" works very well as a Bond movie. The plot is intruiging, and moves along at a perfect pace, keeping the viewer interested. The action sequences in the movie are very well done, immensely enjoyable to watch. Eric Serra's music fits the movie PERFECTLY, and in my opinion, the producers should have invited him back for more films. His score adds a dark undertone to the movie, something which all of Brosnan's Bond movies afterwards would painfully lack.

Characterization is also important in the movie. One of the most memorable scenes has Bond sitting on a Caribbean beach at sunset, staring out at the ocean, and thinking about his inevitable confrontation with Trevelyan, who used to be an old friend. Natalya walks over to Bond, and questions how he can be so cold, so dark. "It's what keeps me alive," Bond replies, before the two of them go off to make love. It's a shame Brosnan was not given more scenes such as this one in future Bond films... it certainly makes "Goldeneye" unique, and deep.

John Travolta is Vic Deakins, a bomber pilot who launches a devilish plan to hijack two nuclear missiles for big-time extortion. Vic never sweats, spews out great one-liners, knocks off money men with glee, toys with killing half a million people... he even smokes!

If you giggled at his "Ain't it cool" line from the trailer, you're in the right frame of mind for this comedic action film. Never as gritty or semi-realistic--or for that matter as heart-thumping--as the original Die Hard, Broken Arrow still delivers. If Travolta is cast against type, everyone else is by the numbers; Christian Slater as Hale, the earnest copilot looking to foil the plot, Samantha Mathis as the brave park ranger caught in the middle, Frank Whaley as an eager diplomat, Delroy Lindo as a right-minded colonel. As with his previous script (the superior Speed), writer Graham Yost moves everything quickly along as Hale and the ranger try to cut off Deakins's plan over a variety of terrains. We have plane crashes, car chases, a pursuit through an abandoned mine, a helicopter-train shootout, and lots of fighting between boys. Each time Hale finds himself perfectly in place to foil Deakins. You're suppose to laugh at the unbelievable situations. That's where Arrow is deceptive: its tone is right for the laughter compared to the mean-spirited Schwarzenegger and Stallone action films with labored jokes. Hong Kong master director John Woo (The Killer, Hard Target) pulls out all the stops--slow motion of Hale and Deakins's gymnastic gun play, nifty stunts, countdowns to doomsday. Woo may know action, but he needs more guidance in creating unique and stunning special effects. This is action entertainment at its cheesiest. Travolta and Woo later reteamed for Face/Off. --Doug Thomas

Description

1 out of 5 stars Broken Depth, nauseating....trite, for fans of flat, uncharging films.......2007-05-25

everyone should burn this dvd. Horrible acting, slow, moronic script, lackluster dialouge, Travolta is truly second rate B actor in this, Slater is appalling as per usual, (with the exception of Pump Up the Volume, which I found rather delicious as a feel good film)

The film just doesn't go anywhere, it's a movie you forget about a week later after you watch it. It is simply a 'fair' film, with frosh dialouge from a liberal arts major at a state college. In this reviewers opinion, it is probably in the top twenty or so worst acting films in the cinemas history. No emotion, no depth, a zero star. Horrendously crafted. It is as bad, or as comparable to 'Con Air', and we all know how truly pathetic that was.

5 out of 5 stars Broken Arrow...Yes it is cool!!.......2007-05-06

Catching a line from this movie the suspense in this movie is "cool". John Travolta and Christian Slater are at odds in this 1996 movie on the theft of two nuclear warheads in rugged terrain of Utah. At times it has you on the edge of your seat. It certainly is a far cry from Travolta's roles in Grease and Saturday Night Fever but one of his best!!

5 out of 5 stars Broken Arrow.......2007-03-09

I had originally taped this from TV but liked it so much that I wanted to buy it. It is a great movie and I like both the actors in it.

4 out of 5 stars John Woo's first American movie.......2007-01-16

Lots of action and typical John Woo action film. It's interesting to see American stars (Travolta and Slater)act under his direction. Travolta's performance is excellent as the antagonist.

3 out of 5 stars Good Movie - BUT NOT ANAMORPHIC.......2006-09-25

While the film is entertaining and Travolta and Slater play off of each other like oil and water, the aspect ratio is not Anamorphic, so be warned if you have a 16X9. Hope they correct that in a future release because this one keeps Wooing me back. (sorry)

Trapped by his image in 1976, Clint Eastwood resurrected his Dirty Harry character for a third go-round (out of a total of five) in this potboiler story in which the San Francisco detective takes on a group of revolutionary kids. Tyne Daly costars as a female cop who partners with the reluctant Harry Callahan, and she does very well by a role created merely to underscore and articulate the hero's various virtues. It's a dull package all around, but inside the wrapping are good performances by the two leads. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars The Third in The Dirty Harry Era.......2007-02-16

The third picture featuring Clint Eastwood as Dirty Harry. Clint Eastwood resumes his role as Police Inspector Harry Callahan; Tyne Daly plays the role of Inspector Kate Moore and Harry Guadino as Lt Al Bressler. Harry gets into one of his usual predicaments when his is relegated to Personnel to help interview patrol officers on the list to make inspector. While filling his duties in personnel he learns that there are eight openings for inspector and three of those eight will be filled by woman. A group of people who call themselves the People's Revolutionary Strike Force (PRSF), led by Bobby Maxwell, are making plans to go on a crime spree all over the city of San Francisco. When Dirty Harry's longtime partner is killed by the PRSF during a major weapons theft, Dirty Harry vows revenge and, surprisingly, is given some support by his superiors. Harry has one problem, he's given a new partner and it's non other then a lady inspector. After the Mayor of San Francisco is taken its up to Harry and his new partner are expecting to find him. All and all I give this movie 8 weasel stars.

3 out of 5 stars Moving Targets.......2007-01-10

As the third entry in the Dirty Harry film series, The Enforcer is probably a little above average in terms of the time spent in watching it. Yet, it is a bit of a misfire (no pun intended) after "Dirty Harry" and "Magnum Force". The character of Harry Callahan returns more to the roots of his original incarnation in the first film, however his presence seems almost wasted here for some unexplained reason. James Fargo, a long-time member of Eastwood's film-family crew, takes over as director in the third installment of the Dirty Harry saga.

The basic premise of the movie involves a group of self-proclaimed revolutionaries who threaten the city by the Bay, so it's up to Harry to enforce the law and bring them to justice. At the business-end of a .44 magnum, of course. The film follows the basic formula of all the other films, as noted below.

The film opens up with a brutal, chilling scene involving a couple of the militants killing two truck delivery men. Shift to Harry and his current partner, Frank DiGiorgio (John Mitchum, a.k.a. brother of actor Robert Mitchum) who has appeared in the previous 2 Dirty Harry films. The robbery/hostage scene is the typical Harry-must-establish-his-credentials-for-the-audience, as in the beginning of every Dirty Harry film. He does so quite effectively here by dispensing with words and creating his own 'mini-Entebbe raid' on the perps and the store (note Joe Spano, a.k.a. Henry Goldblume from "Hill Street Blues" as one of the bad guys).

We next find Callahan moved from Homicide to personnel thanks to Captain McKay (Bradford Dillman), which is not to his liking. Some great dialogue in the personnel board interview scene among all actors involved, and we get introduced to who will obviously become Callahan's new partner, Kate Moore, played by Tyne Daly (sister of actor Tim Daly). The text of Harry's dislike of political correctness, or 'being stylish' as he puts it, still rings very true today. In keeping with the previous films, Harry is given a minority person as a partner: Chico the Hispanic-American in Dirty Harry, Early Smith an African-American in Magnum Force, and now a woman. To being saddled with Moore, Harry utters his tag-line for this film "Marvelous". Not as good as "Do I feel lucky" or "Make my day", or even "A man's got to know his limitations", but it's what we the audience are left with. Thus continues the formula.

The People's Revolutionary Strike Force are striking hard, including steeling weapons like LAWS rockets, automatic rifles, and then fatally stabbing Harry's detective friend Frank DiGiorgio who just happened to be in the area while the warehouse robbery was going down.

The city wants to pin the robbery and threat on black militants, but Harry doesn't buy it. So, when the terrorists kidnap the Mayor, Harry uses every tactic at his disposal to hunt them down.

Throughout the picture, Harry pretty much has disdain for everyone: his superiors, his partner, his informants, the people he questions, the mayor, and even a guy trying to get a free meal at the beginning of the picture. When Big Ed Mustafa (Albert Popwell, who appeared in 4 of the 5 Dirty Harry films as different characters) says, "Man, you really are dirty, aren't you", Harry's answer "The dirtiest" is in some ways an understatement, and in other ways incorrect. He seems more like "Grouchy Harry" throughout the film.

There are some excellent lines sprinkled throughout, like "V.F.W. - very few whites", "Why, that's mighty white of you", and "Your mouthwash ain't makin' it!".

Two very glaring errors in The Enforcer are the absence of Lalo Schifrin as composer of the soundtrack and the building-to-building rooftop chase over San Francisco that not only contains rather odd jazz music for such a violent action picture, but also lasts twice as long on screen as it should have.

The final confrontation on Alcatraz Island is exciting and leads to the inevitable death of Harry's partner, again not unexpected given what has been presented to us in the previous two films.

Although exciting in parts, The Enforcer just seemed to have been rushed into production and finished in order to give movie-goers a Dirty Harry film by Christmas. We are given even less to know about Harry than the previous 2 films, and in some ways he almost seems a caricature of the more despondant, over-worked, not-sure-why-he's-even-doing-this person whom we met in Dirty Harry. Although a decent action picture, some good lines, and of course Clint Eastwood all help it, the final result in many ways, "The Enforcer" still does not rise to any level other than plain old-fashioned popcorn entertainment, and fairly ordinary popcorn at that.

3 out of 5 stars A competent action but a noticeable lack of depth and subtlety..........2006-12-28

Harry Callahan quickly establishes his action-not-words by driving his car through a liquor store window to free the owners, who are being held as hostages... Demoted to the personnel department, he scorns bureaucracy in general and in particular the Mayor's policy of attracting women into the force, but he is saddled with one, Kate Moore (Tyne Daly) as his by now obligatory 'minority' partner...

Insp. Callahan finds black militants are not his enemies but his allies: when 'Big' Ed Mustapha (Albert Popwell), the black leader, is arrested to boost the Mayor's prestige, Harry actually resigns this time and continues his pursuit of the revolutionaries as a loner... His female aide risks her own job to he1p him and eventually they chase a prime suspect through the seamy 'massage parlor' underworld of the city and kill a leading gang member, who has disguised, herself as a nun... And discovering that the Mayor is being held captive on Alcatraz Island, they make for an abandoned fortress for the final shootout...

The film is a step backwards in style and content from the previous two... Harry seems to have reverted to his first incarnation: 'What kind of a department are we running when we're more concerned with the rights of the criminals than of the people we're supposed to be protecting?' and displays unusual brutality in roughing up a man who feigns heart attacks instead of paying his restaurant bills...

Advertised as the 'dirtiest Harry of them all,' it is also the weakest... Without the experience of Siegel or Milius to help him, Eastwood took a gamble on James Fargo, his assistant director on some of his previous films and the result was competent action but a noticeable lack of depth and subtlety...

Anchor Bay gives Just Jaeckin's legendary 1974 erotic drama Emmanuelle an appropriately sumptuous DVD presentation, featuring uncut prints of the original and its two official sequels, 1975's Emmanuelle 2 and 1977's Goodbye Emmanuelle, in a three-disc set. All three films, which star Sylvia Kristel in the title role, are handsomely mounted adults-only fare, and their lush photography, exotic locations, and arousing (but not explicit) bedroom couplings not only helped to change softcore features, but also offered an alternative to XXX for mainstream audiences.

Based on a memoir by the wife of a delegate to Thailand, Emmanuelle focuses on the sexual awakening of a naive French diplomat's spouse at the hands of an experienced older man (Alain Cuny). First-time director Jaeckin and producer Yves Rousset-Rouard eschewed going the pornographic route with the story, and instead concentrated on the natural beauty of the Thailand setting and their star, 20-year-old Dutch model Kristel. The film was a runaway success in Europe and America, where it was successfully promoted as an erotic film devoid of porn's misogynistic tendencies. In addition to its box-office impact, Emmanuelle encouraged other softcore filmmakers to showcase travelogue-style locations and less sniggering storylines.

Emmanuelle's success naturally precipitated sequels, and two more adventures followed: Emmanuelle 2 (subtitled The Joys of a Woman in the States), which moved the action to Hong Kong; and Goodbye Emmanuelle, which sent the libertine to the Seychelles in search of a meaningful relationship. Respective directors Francis Giacobetti and Francois Leterrier's efforts were appropriately spicy, but Rousset-Rouard wisely decided to quit while he was ahead after the third picture. The series' worldwide appeal prompted a string of cheap and strange ripoffs, many featuring Indonesian actress Laura Gemser, who appears in Emmanuelle 2. But for cult movie fans, Anchor Bay's set offers the real Emmanuelle in all of her undraped glory. --Paul Gaita

The incomparably beautiful Sylvia Kristel stars in this landmark adult trilogy that begins with the sumptuous "Emmanuelle," continues with the explosive "Emmanuelle 2," and climaxes in the daring final chapter "Good-Bye Emmanuelle," which is only available in this collection.

5 out of 5 stars The best character approach for an adult series.......2007-05-26

Of these films only the first is known as being a benchmark in erotic cinema and although none of the films are good all around there are things to enjoy about all of them. I find all of them beautifully photographed and locations, but the first one has the best storyline and I think that's why it's remembered so fondly. With that being said it's also too mild for my taste, but I can definitely appreciate it.

The second Emmanuelle film is the one you should truly get to see has how erotic things can get. It doesn't have the story that you might feel is essential because it's all about Emmanuelle and her husband doing whatever pleases them sexually, so it's all about the detour and as such it has a lot of sexy scenes that are unconnected to plot, so it's good for people who like to skip around in scenes, but the this movie is the best shot film of the series without a doubt. It's beautiful from head to toe. I think this is probably more erotic than stuff that's around nowadays, I'm not sure, I'm not a connosieur of the genre, but it seems the new stuff is made on a factory line, and this has some semblance of artistic merit, even if it's not essentially dramatic.

The last film is the worst for a few important reasons. 1)the producers had to kill it, since they realized there was no future in making these movies with success being controlled by political climate so they ended in the most conservative way possible, they took the fun out the sex, the beauty out of the nudity, the gauziness out of the visuals, and the Emmanuelle out of the story. It doesn't work in comparison to the other movies because it's specifically about Emmanuelle's gradual dislike of sex simply for pleasure and has her fall in love with some guy, who the movie isn't interested in. While life changes are inevitable, this series brings with it a certain expectation and the love scenes are a bore, not erotic, or even mildly titillating. Worst of all, the man who plans Jean is given the worst task of trying to seem like a jerk and do nothing else. Yes, it's the most dramatically stagnant movie in the series, but the movie boringly moves along a crucial plot point that brought the end to the series. I just wish they would've only made two and not even done a third. This movie is a funeral.

As for the extras, the featurettes are wonderful and gradually get shorter as time goes along. I wish the second one would've been longer, but you can't always get what you want.

2 out of 5 stars How much is too much!.......2007-01-06

I never tire of the original, yet this collection was tiring.

1 out of 5 stars Emmanuelle Collection is totally cut!.......2006-09-20

I recently bought the "Emmanuelle Collection" for nearly $100 and what a disappointment! According to the totally false advertising in the "Editorial reviews" these movies are presented complete and uncut. This is so not true. All three movies are cut, but Emmanuelle 2, the Joys of a Woman, generally regarded as the best of the series, is literally butchered! Everything from the keyhole anime sequence to the incredibly beautiful bathouse sequence is cut to shreds. In particular, the bathhouse scene, a masterpiece of gentle sensuality, is completely obliterated in this butcher's cut. Generally speaking, most of the eroticism in all three famous erotic films (and I love these films, and saw them uncut in the theater, and own Emmanuelle 2 uncut on laser disc) has been destroyed by someone who cut the films (and someone who particularly hates sensual scenes of women together). These films are valueless, as their essential appeal as erotic viewing is gone. This is a total ripoff and the claim of being uncut is a total lie, as I can prove to anyone who wants to fire up my laser player, or who has any kind of memory of how beautiful these films used to be before someone took big scissors to them. Don't buy!!

5 out of 5 stars Emmanuelle : Collection en français.......2005-01-09

5 out of 5 stars The original Emmanuelle, and the best.......2004-08-24

This boxed set presents the three original Emmanuelle movies, the ones starring Sylvia Kristel. There were lots of imitators, most ranging from bad to worse and beyond. At the time of the first Emmanuelle, though none of that had yet happened - please hold that happy thought. Perhaps these three aren't high art, but they're generally good entertainment for adults. They are also so different from each other that they deserve to be reviewed individually, not as a lump.

* Emmanuelle: Back in the 70s, this was a groundbreaking movie. It was openly erotic, and openly meant for the general public. I'll leave the social commentary to others. For me, it's just a beautiful movie. It's set in beautiful tropical locations. It stars beautiful actresses, back before implants were part of the uniform. Most of all, it shows beautiful (if artificial) exchanges of physical affection between Emmanuelle and just about everyone, man and woman.

Still, there were a few things about this movie that I didn't care for. It usually depicts Emmanuelle as a passive figure, to be led and acted upon. I prefer the stronger character in the sequel. Later parts of the movie depict coercion, something I really don't care for. The haughty poseur at the end was annoying, but distantly true to the book. Still, book fans shouldn't get their hopes up. This movie is its own creature, and pleasant enough if taken on its own terms.

* Emmanuelle 2: The best of the bunch, I think. This is a warmly sensuous film. This might even be the one to use for introducing a shy viewer to movies about physical happiness. Emmanuelle is fully her own woman - every scene lies well within her consent and enjoyment. A new character, Anna Maria, is a sweet, innocent young thing. Emmanuelle, of course, broaches that innocence in an elegantly filmed sequence of encounters. A few scenes, like the infamous "Jade Club", come across as crude, but only when meant to. Still, they don't seem threatening. That's another aspect of this film that I like better than the first.

It's too much to say that this movie has a plot, but it does have a story line of sorts. The movie is really just about happy eroticism, though, the kind that relies more on your imagination than on actual imagery. It's sort of like a musical where I come out humming the tunes even if I can't remember the words. Couples might like this movie, even bashful couples, and might like playing along with the actors on screen.

* Goodbye Emmanuelle: This is the third and last of Kristel's Emmanuelle movies, but don't hold her responsible. The backer had run into censorship problems with the second movie, and wanted to make sure that didn't happen again. The result is a disappointing attempt at being serious. It completely lacks the warm mood and physicality of the two earlier efforts. Even the background music has a very different style, one that I found far less successful in framing the visuals and dialog.

It tries to show Emmanuelle and husband Jean growing into a more stable, monogamous relationship. Instead, it just descends into petty jealousies and possessiveness. Jean, especially, pulls tricks that would have seemed silly even in high school. Perhaps the movie meant to show swelling affection and bruised feelings. Instead, it just showed swollen egos and bruised pride.

GoldenEye

This is a great movie! Sean Bean is a terrific villain and Pierce Brosnan is a better Bond that Roger Moore.

I watched this movie with the TV muted and the closed captioning off. So my review is only based on the visual aspect of the movie.

The main thing that "stuck out" on the movie was Guteberg's growth on his lip. I found it very distracting.

I recommend watching the movie with sound on. This way you will not notice the Gute's lip sore.

Note: In the sequal it appears that the lip sore was surgically removed. Check it out.

Description

Pierce Brosnan ignites the screen in his first adventure as the unstoppable James Bond. When a powerful satellite system falls into the hands of a former ally-turned-enemy, only 007 can save the world from an awesome space weapon that -- in one short pulse -- could destroy the earth!

3 out of 5 stars I can only give it a 3 of 5.......2007-06-14

I thought it was a very silly plot, and really, really disliked the Russian hacker.

4 out of 5 stars Goldeneye DVD.......2007-06-10

GoldenEye

This is a great movie! Sean Bean is a terrific villain and Pierce Brosnan is a better Bond that Roger Moore.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth a look!.......2007-04-27

This is a well studied cautionary tale about the potential perils of car crime. Newark in New Jersey had a reputation in the mid-90s for all kinds of car crimes including carjacking at gunpoint and this film cleverly taps into that era. There was talk about lines being crossed by Newark police officers back then and the movie takes a look at that also. I found it difficult sometimes to decide where to place my sympathies. Yes, the car crime itself is mindless and destructive as anyone who has had their car stolen will know but in the movie, the police often come off looking no better than the criminals they are pursuing.

Gabriel Casseus and Sharron Corley give very impressive performances as Midget and Jason respectively. If you're a car enthusiast like me and, like me, you didn't see this movie when it first came out back in 1995, you might feel the cars (which are important characters in this movie as well) date it somewhat but it's not overwhelming. The best thing about this movie for me though is that although it doesn't preach or moralise, it shows very clearly that for young black men, a life of crime can only lead to a limited number of conclusions. That said, when tragedy inevitably ensues, it's still very sad.

Props to director Nick Gomez - he often gets us right into the cars and takes us along for the joyrides - and props to Spike Lee and his 40 Acres & A Mule filmworks for executive producing the movie. I'll be watching this one again and again.

Banging soundtrack as well, by the way. I might actually get it on CD...

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful.......2006-03-09

I purchased this movie for my teenager son, hoping he could see the harsh reality of what could happen to him following the wrong crowd. This movie showed all the basics and then some.

5 out of 5 stars True to life flick.......2005-10-27

This is about urban life ever made. Nick Gomez carefully winds his tale into car thieves almost into greek tradgy. In the lead role as Jason, Shannon Corley shows great leading staus. Jason is played as a character who wants a better life but is caught up with the street life.

BIG UPS TO BRICK CITY & ALL OF JERSEY! NICK GOMEZ HAS DONE THE PROPER RESEARCH 2 CREATE "NEW JERSEY DRIVE"! EVERY 20 SECONDS SOMEONE WOULD BE A VICTIM OF A CAR JACKING ESPECIALLY FROM 90-98! IT'S NOTHING 2 GLORIFY, BUT IT'S "FACTUAL"!!!! IF YOU DROVE THROUGH THE CITY WITH AN EXSPENSIVE RIDE THEN "YOU WILL FALL VICTIM"! **IT'S A COMPELLING ROLE DONE BY JASON/"SHARON CORLEY"... I'M NOT SURE WHERE HE'S FROM BUT HE'S WELCOME 2 MY BLOCK ON "G.T" ANYTIME! ON N.J. RITCHIE WAS MIDGETS' COUSIN, RITCHIE RAN HIS' MOUTH AROUND THE HOOD SAYING THAT HIM, JASON & MIDGET TOOK A COPS' CAR SO TENSIONS AROSE... JASONS' SISTER JACKIE WAS THE RATIONALE 4 JASON & RITCHIE 2 START BEEFING...JASON TOLD JACKIE THAT HE DON'T WANT HER IN ANY STOLEN CARS & RITCHIE INTERVENED THEN HITS JASON... SO JASON HAD 2 REPRESENT & BEAT HIS' ASS THEN MIDGET BROKE IT UP. BEING THAT RITCHIE LOST HE MADE A BITCH MOVE & SHOT AT JASON (JASON DODGE IT OF COURSE)! I STRONGLY FELT THAT RITCHIE SHOULD'VE BEEN KILLED RATHER THAN TINY/FAISON, OR PEANUT! "THEIR LAST HOORAH", IS THE DAY PEANUT DIED, MIDGET RAN & JASON STOP RUNNING...
