This 45-minute kids' tour of Yellowstone National Park has it all: the geysers and bubbling mud pots, buffalo mingling with traffic, and grizzlies (fortunately) not mingling with traffic. Part of the excellent kid-narrated Big Adventure series, this installment takes viewers on a ranger-guided walking tour of the geyser boardwalk and through the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, where hikers can stand next to the 300-foot Lower Falls as the water drops to the river below. This is no mere travelogue, however. Clear graphics show how volcanic magma sends steam shooting from the earth. And the 1988 wildfire, which burned more than a third of the park, as well as the wolf relocation program are examined. For those who can't get through the day without a good action sequence, footage of helicopter rescue team and smoke jumper practices is included. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Trailer Park Boys,,, the Movie.......2007-05-10
I like this movie as much as all of the 6 seasons and the Christmas specials. None of my friends seem to like these DVD's at all! I can't help it if they are all dummards. If they could smarten up like me I think they would depreciate all of them.
A movie that must be watched after the series.......2007-04-05
I've been a huge fan of this show. I own all the seasons and have already watched the 6th season, i'm so what addicted to it. Now when showing this show/movie to my friends theres a couple of things i do first. I'll show them the first season and second season to have them get the jist of the show. Simply being the show is so diffrent from anything in america that it takes some getting used to. But after a while you will quickly begin to enjoy the show. I've never met anyone who watched the whole first season and be displeased. Afterwards they'll love the movie as dearly as i do. I have shown the movie to a few before they seen any of the show and had mixed reviews. But never has someone whose watched a little bit of the show not like the Movie. Overall the movie is great, everyone from the shows i back on except trinity. The girl who plays trinity is an awful actress however shes not in it too much. You'll really enjoy this show if you're a true Trailer Park Boys fan.
one of the worst for the brain dead.......2007-04-02
don't know why this elementary level movie could be a hit in canada. guess they also got messy education problem. i've tried to watch this movie several times, but had to eject it out of the player every time after 10 or 20 minutes. this is a horrible trashy movie. bad acting, bad script, bad of everything. it's like watching a bunch of mentally retarded people decided to make a movie, unless you are also retarded, you simply could not understand why and how this could call a movie. i've thought before that mtv's 2 'jackass' movies were pointless enough, but after this one, i finally realized that the young generation nowadays really got some serious problems: they like install boomboxes in their pickup trucks blasting out nerve shattering noises than soothing music; they prefer cars without mufflers; they prefer meaningless stuff and consider them cool; they prefer body piercing with rings and beads on their eyebrows, tongues, navels, even on their private parts; tattooing all over their bodies; wearing slashed jeans ....on and on. what becomes of this world?
Trailer Park Boys: The Movie.......2007-03-24
We love these guys glad we were able to get the movie. transaction was fast and product was as stated
The right stuff.......2007-02-24
Fans will not be dissapointed, all your favorite characters are at it
again. The fun continues with this movie, the boys are out of prison
and need to get back to what they do best...
Even if you never saw the series, you should enjoy it if you dont mind
the swearing....but it fits the characters.

The mighty-muscled heroes and big-bottomed babes of fantasy artist Frank Frazetta inspired animator Ralph Bakshi (Fritz the Cat, Wizards) to create the swords-and-sorcery epic Fire and Ice. Bakshi uses a technique called rotoscoping, which uses live-action film of actors as the template for animation, allowing him to put realistic action into fantastic environments. The verisimilitude of movement in a cartoon can be startling, but that's about all Fire and Ice has to offer; the wafer-thin story, overwrought characters, and clumsy dialogue are vapid cliches. Of much greater interest are the extras in this two-disc set, including a making-of feature that demonstrates the painstaking process of rotoscoping; enthusiastic commentary from Bakshi, who's a jovial, down-to-earth guy with a thick Brooklyn accent; deliriously fatuous diary notes from one of the actors; and a feature-length documentary called Frazetta: Painting with Fire, which reveals the artist to be more intriguing than any of the barbarians he's famous for. The effusive praise of other fantasy artists and "Frazetta historians" occasionally veers into Spinal Tap territory, but it's fascinating watching Frazetta turn from a 1950s James-Dean-style tough guy into the king of fantasy art. Though his work is often dismissed as adolescent kitsch, the documentary persuasively argues that Frazetta deservedly dominates his corner of the art world. --Bret Fetzer
Description
From The Director Of The Original Animated LORD OF THE RINGS And The Illustrator Of CONAN THE BARBARIAN
It began as a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration between two of the greatest icons of the fantasy genre: Controversial animator Ralph Bakshi (director of FRITZ THE CAT, WIZARDS and the original THE LORD OF THE RINGS) and legendary illustrator Frank Frazetta (creator of the iconic CONAN THE BARBARIAN, VAMPIRELLA and Edgar Rice Burroughs book covers). It became - and remains - one of the most startling animation epics of all time. Now experience a world unlike any ever seen, where savage warriors, horrific monsters and luscious maidens battle for the soul of a civilization in a time of good and evil, pleasure and pain, and FIRE & ICE
This long-unavailable cult favorite has been remastered in High Definition from the original vault materials, remixed in stunning 6.1 DTS-ES and 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround EX, and loaded with exciting Extras.
Disc 2 contains FRAZETTA: PAINTING WITH FIRE, the acclaimed 93 minute documentary that explores the remarkable life and career of the man who changed fantasy art forever.

Teenage nostalgia does not age well........2007-06-26
Fire and Ice (Ralph Bakshi, 1983)
Sometimes I wonder what on earth filmmakers were thinking when they made movies. More often, I wonder what I was thinking when I was enthralled with them. In this case, though, I don't need to do either--when Fire and Ice came out, I was fourteen years old, male, and not terribly experienced with the opposite sex--in other words, I was Ralph Bakshi's exact target audience. Now I'm thirty-eight, married, and have a more encyclopedic knowledge of eighties and nineties exploitation cinema (read: porn) than I'm sure anyone in my family would like to acknowledge; rewatching Fire and Ice these days, I look back and grieve that my fourteen-year-old self had such bad taste. (But then, in 1983, my all-time favorite movie was Deathsport. No, I can't explain it either.)
Fire and Ice, which All-Movie Guide calls "Bakshi's last stab at epic fantasy", concerns two kingdoms, the established human kingdom ruled by fire, and the upstart kingdom of outcasts and half-breeds, the kingdom of Ice. Needless to say, one is wise and good, and the other is twisted and evil. Interestingly, there are a few places in the script where denizens of either kingdom could waver from their one-dimensionality and suddenly bring depth and richness to the script; we're dangling there waiting for Bakshi to drop the apple into our mouths, but of course it's snatched away as quickly as it's offered. Cruel, I tell you. But then, no one's supposed to be paying attention to the script; we're supposed to be too busy, erm, "watching" Tigre (voice of Cynthia Leake), who starts the movie wearing something that looks as if it's supposed to be a diaphanous lavender negligee over a couple of pieces of filmy stuff that pass as underwear. But only for the first third of the movie, after which the negligee-thing goes away. Draw some luscious, and entirely unrealistic, curves, and the audience's collective brain will be interested in nothing else; at least, this seems to have been the thinking behind this production. (Add in a cameo from Batman--and I swear, the character looks like the ancestor of the animated version of Batman from the seventies--and you'll kill off the last few collective brain cells still struggling to recover from the onslaught of Tigre-flesh.)
But the worst part is that, after realizing all this, I still sat through the entire eighty-one minutes this weekend. I'm pretty sure I didn't drool, but there may be some extra gaps in the gray matter I should probably have my doctor take a look at. *
Slow moving rotoscoped animation.......2007-05-26
The storyline for this movie was interesting, but took so long to get moving I started to lose interest. If it was a one-hour movie, it probably would have been more entertaining. The Big Bad Evil Ice Guy is attempting to conquer the Good Guy Fire King, but most of the time is spent with the Fire King's scantily clad, fantasy-proportioned princess running from ape-like soldiers and being rescued over-and-over by a sole-surviving warrior from one of her father/king's tribes. It all wraps up very quickly in the end. If you like Frazzetta, then you'll notice this is a whole movie of his paintings in rotoscoped animation.
Action Packed Fantasy Fun!.......2007-01-03
If you liked Conan the Barbarian or even Thundarr the Barbarian you'll like this movie.
One of my all-time favorites. A real gem of a film........2006-12-01
I highly recommend this title to anyone who likes films in the fantasy genre. Even after all these years I still enjoy watching this film for what could probably be the 100th time. The animation techniques were very innovative for the time. The storyline is compelling and the characters are fascinating. This is one DVD that I am very happy to have been able to get my hands on and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for something unique and special.
Frazetta animated, 'nuff said!.......2006-11-22
He is awesome. Anyone who dobuts the Rotoscope, see this movie.
Know what's cooler? If you are an illustrator/animator, you could do that movie today? (Hopefully something original along those lines)
Just get Poser 5 or higher, a good animation software package (ToonBoom seems to be leading) and work out a storyboard. Then, have the 3D figs act out the basic moves and trace over them, using the computer to extend your art style.
A literal "Animated Movie" would still be a labor of Hercules, but 3-10 minute shorts would be quite doable;-)

A matinee programmer with lofty ambitions, The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms is best appreciated as a vintage showcase for the stop-motion animation of special-effects legend Ray Harryhausen. The hoary plot follows the cold-war formula that dominated science fiction movies of the 1950s: After an atomic bomb test in the northern polar ice cap, a gigantic dinosaur--the fictional "Rhedosaurus"--is awakened from eons of dormancy, plots an undersea course for the Eastern seaboard, and proceeds to wreak havoc on New York City, culminating in a showdown with military marksmen at the Coney Island amusement park. Stock footage and tissue-thin drama make this a by-the-numbers monster flick, further hampered by Eugene Lourie's lackluster direction and a wooden B-movie cast. And yet, Harryhausen's first independent effort retains its atomic-age fascination: Beast marked yet another technical milestone for Harryhausen's impeccable techniques, and its perpetual status as a sci-fi classic is duly acknowledged in the DVD bonus features, including a retrospective featurette and a latter-day reunion of Harryhausen and longtime friend Ray Bradbury, whose short story "The Fog Horn" served as this film's inspiration. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Near the Arctic Circle, an atomic bomb is detonated. This fearsome experiment disturbs the sleep of a giant rhedosaurus encased in ice for more than 100-million years and sends it southward on a destructive, deadly rampage. The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms is a film of firsts. It spawned a new era of atomic-age creature features. It was the first screen adaptation of a work by fantasy fiction titan Ray Bradbury. And it marked the first time Ray Harryhausen had control over special effects. He came up with a fantastic creature (constructed at full scale, all 50 tons of it) that swims down from the north to run amok through New York City before being conquered in a spectacular Coney Island roller coaster finale. Take a classic ride. Unleash The Beast. Year: 1953
DVD Features:
Documentaries:Two commemorative 50th anniversary documentaries - The Rhedosaurus and the Roller Coaster: Making the Beast; Harryhausen & Bradbury: An Unfathomable Friendship
Production Notes
Theatrical Trailer:Giant monsters trailer gallery featurnig this film, The Black Scorpion, Clash of the Titans and The Valley of Gwangi

Adult Popcorn.......2007-07-06
This movie is what I call "Adult Popcorn." That doesn't mean you have to be one, but it helps.
When you are asked what movie you want to rent or buy, try this one.
Corny yes. Not great special affects. This is Jurasic Park 50 years before that movie was released. Old yes and fun to. Don't forget the popcorn.
The very latest models for 1953.......2007-06-28
It's hard to realize why this early stop-motion animation "beast on the loose" film is so warmly remembered until you actually see it, since it doesn't seem from its description like it should be that special. Its plot of a monster released by atomic radiation attacking a city has been repeated again and again, and owes much to both the 1933 KING KONG and the 1925 THE LOST WORLD (as Ray Bradbury and Ray Harryhausen, who respectively wrote its original story and created its effects, cheerfully admit in the accompaying feature). But in many ways this set the standard for the films of this sort that dominated the sci-fi films of the 50s, and the beast itself is really a marvel. Whereas King Kong was childlike, given to charming bits of curiosity and childish tantrums of rage, and the later (much inferior) Godzilla simply incarnated pure chaos, the Beast here has become much beloved over the decades because it is so ornery. It attacks fishing trawlers, lighthouses, diving bells and the docks of Manhattan for no good reason other than that it's particularly grumpy and ill-tempered, which makes it all the more adorable. (It even looks like a cross between a pit bull and a gila monster.)
As with most 1950s monster films, the stuff that comes in-between the Beast's rampages is pretty forgettable, although the Swiss Paul Hubschmid (here called Paul Christian) is a pretty unusual choice as the hero, and Paula Raymond, as the fretful assistant to a paleontology professor, is for some reason given a hilarious array of the very latest in New Look fashions in every scene she's in. Probably the film's producers figured if they couldn't give us the animated Harryhausen model of the rhedosaurus they'd have to give us something, so there she is sporting others sorts of the very latest models.
Great 50s Classic.......2007-03-10
I remember watching this as a kid on MONA LISA Monster Theatre.Still a great 50s SCI-FI Flick. Harry Harryhausen is the best at his creature animations. This movie ia a must for all SCI-FI fans.
ONE OF RAY'S FINEST CLASSIC MONSTER ON THE LOOSE!.......2007-03-08
This is the one that set off a surge of giant monsters trampling through our cities in the 50's. I know The Lost World and King Kong were first, but there was a lull for quite some time before this Harryhausen classic set the fifties on fire! The DVD has a very nice transfer and some extra material. If you like old monster movies this one is well worth owning. It is a Stop Motion Masterpiece!
Nice Transfer Of An Early 'Creature Feature'.......2007-02-14
It would be a mistake to write off "The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms" as being too cliché; for to do so would be to forget that most of the clichés that are in the movie originated with this movie. What you have with this movie is undoubtedly one of many movies which are put into the creature feature category. It also uses the Godzilla like premise of an ancient monster being reawakened due to nuclear testing. Throw in the hero who isn't believed by his colleagues, and the woman scientist who is the only one who listens to him, and you have the elements of more 50's science fiction movies than I care to count.
The storyline is simple, atomic testing releases a Rhedosaurus from the arctic ice. When two observers are measuring the results of the test, one is killed while the other, Professor Tom Nesbitt, is injured but manages to survive. His story is attributed to stress and he is shipped back to New York for treatment. As he recovers, stories begin to appear about sea monsters which convince him that what he remembers is true. He gets the aid from Professor Thurgood Elson and his assistant Lee Hunter. Together they finally convince the armed forces, but not until it is too late and the beast has made it too New York City. Panic ensues as the beast destroys sections of the city until the final climactic scene at the Coney Island Rollercoaster.
This was a very low budget movie, costing around $210,000 to make. Not surprisingly it doesn't have any big stars, although you may recognize some character actors from other roles. Paul Hubschmid plays Professor Nesbitt, and Paula Raymond plays Lee Hunter. Two names which do stand out are those of Ray Harryhausen who was responsible for the animation, and Ray Bradbury who wrote the short story "The Fog Horn", on which this film is somewhat based. The film was directed by Eugène Lourié.
Make no mistake, this is not a great film, but it is fun and it has an undeniable place in the history of science fiction and the movies. It was nominated in 2004 for the Retro Hugo for Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form for pieces which debuted in the year 1953. The film is just 79 minutes long, and yet it probably could have been shortened a bit as it does drag at times. The pace does pick up at the end as they fight the beast in the streets of New York.
The transfer of the movie for the most part looks very good. The special features are decent, with a couple of short documentaries. The first is "The Rhedosaurus and the Roller Coaster: Making the Beast" which is just a short feature about the movie. The second is "Harryhausen & Bradbury" which features the two men talking about their long friendship and their love of dinosaurs. There are also four trailers, including one for his movie, and then ones for "The Black Scorpion", The Valley of Gwangi", and "Clash of the Titans".

Product Description
This is a great Canadian comedy series. The movie tells of how the stars Jean Paul Tremblay-(Julian) and the head writer of the show and his buddies Rickie and Bubbles play it over the top in what is a true life satirical look at trailer parks and the denizens of said trashy hoods. The movie will tell you why Rickie and Julian begin doing their more advanced forays into the world of crime. WHY and the reasons behind everything would be a spoiler so I shall not give the real reasons behind their more brilliant escapades. Their friend and oft-time partner(Bubbles) is a brilliant character. The whole show is brilliant and missing the movie will not affect the way you see the sit-com one bit. It is a comedy with a capital C and a brilliant satire on trailer park living and small time crooks with small time ideas but big time dreams. If you ever have the opportunity to watch--buy--steal this program grab it. You will be glad you did. And to my American friends---It will break you up also. 10 out of 9. Brilliant. TV how TV should be.

Funniest thing on TV.......2006-05-21
Hey I am just doing this review while hunting for Season 5 - once you see the show - you'll be jonesing for more too! Original, just too funny, this TV show rocks out. Although this is truly a Eastern Canadian show, those of us who grew up in 1970s can deeply relate to it. I see it more as a Gen X/Y style humor for all nations.
!!! CANADIAN? WHO WATCHES AMERICAN ANYWAY? !!!.......2005-06-05
BEING A CANADAIN, THIS SHOW IS THE ONLY THING KEEPING T.V REAL. I SICK OF STUPID AMERICAN SHOWS ON THE AIR ALL THE TIME. EVERY AMERICAN SHOW IS A REDUNDANT STICOM/REALITY SHOW THAT IS ONLY GOOD TO FEED THE MINDS OF A MINDLESS NATION (LOOK AT THE PRESIDENT) TRAILER PARK BOYS IS THE ONLY GOOD SHOW ON THE AIR TODAY, GREAT WRITING, GREAT CHARACTERS, AND OF COURSE, ITS CANADIAN, WHICH HELPS ALOT. THE BEST SHOW ON T.V SINCE KIDS IN THE HALL. IM HAPPY TO LIVE IN A COUNTRY THAT STILL HAS ORIGIONALITY AND A SENSE OF HUMOR, AND IF YOU WANT TO CHECK IT OUT, GUARANTEED YOU WILL FALL IN LOVE WITH TRAILER LIFE!
Canadians have TV, Who knew?.......2005-05-07
In the states we don't ever hear much about Canadian television... Probably because most of the stuff they watch is produced by or for Americans... Anyway, this little jewel caught my eye and had me rolling in laughter. Probably one of the funniest sit-coms I've ever seen. Buy it, roll a fatty, and sit back and enjoy!
Great Canadian Comedy.......2004-10-08
Trailer Park Boys is unmatchable. The characters Ricky, Julian, & Bubbles are very well developed. Ricky is a great guy, but is just confused at times. In his confusion, he just happens to bring him and everyone around him down. Julian, usually the problem solver, like many people is always frustrated by Ricky's actions. Bubbles, the COOLEST character, fixes shopping carts for a living.
If you haven't seen season 1 & 2, then get them first.

Description
Of the millions of newcomers who flock to New York City, the astounding arrival in 1991 of a red-tailed hawk made history. No other red-tailed hawk had ever attempted to make Manhattan his territory. Affectionately dubbed Pale Male, he made an exclusive Fifth Avenue apartment building his home. Pale Male became an instant celebrity who made New Yorkers' hearts and imaginations soar. The destruction of his nest in December, 2004, became front page news. See Pale Male's remarkable story in this award-winning presentation of the Emmy-honored PBS series, NATURE narrated by Oscar-winner Joanne Woodward. Join the close-knit community of bird-watchers who faithfully gather daily to follow the progress of this exquisite, powerful bird of prey, as he hunts Central Park's wild creatures, courts his mate on Woody Allen's balcony, builds a penthouse nest, fiercely protects his family from attacking crows, and encourages his baby chicks to fly. Pale Male and his family become a magnificent obsession for the captivated crowds below. To the regulars on the beach, it's better than Broadway. And so is this very special program that the Audubon Society has proclaimed "a classic."
Customer Reviews:
what a great story!.......2007-06-27
I have watched it with my 70 year old parents and with kids. It's a lovely story for all ages!
Pale Male.......2004-06-08
This DVD is absolutely astounding. As a birder myself just the idea of a Red Tail taking up residence on 5th Ave. is great. He has had more than one mate. His first,First Love was rehabilitated at The Raptor Trust in New Jersey and released from there. His second mate was also a Raptor Trust rehabilitated hawk. My daughter worked at The Raptor Trust for 10 years. We are all very happy with the success of Pale Male's nesting. He is a magnificent bird.

MAYBE "SMALL PLANS SMALLER BRAINS"?.......2007-03-12
Just when you think TV comedy is dead, something comes along to make you change your mind. Like the original "The Office", "Trailer Park Boys" shows up in mock reality style and there the similarities end. The first two seasons exhibit that sort of newness and surprise that makes for priceless entertainment. The story lines, characters and their interactions are almost hard to believe. What can you say about a show with a character named Ricky telling his best friend Julian "I love Lucy" after Lucy has made a pass at Julian? Or Bubbles making his living by restoring stolen shopping carts and, when facing jail time, asks the sincere and poignant question, "Who's gonna look after my kitties"? As preposterous as the people and the situations become, the lads hold it all together with flawless comic logic that usually ends in hilarious parodies of typical TV style, not unlike South Park's addiction to "I learned something today ..." closings. But of course, no-one has or ever will learn a thing. Unapologetically lovable and offensive adventures in love, friendship, gunfights, growing dope and getting drunk. If you haven't visited the Sunnyvale Trailer Park yet, get over there ASAP. And bring a few smokes.
Finally people get it!.......2006-03-02
I must be one of the only people to have seen this show when it originally came out. I used to go to my friends house after highschool with some other buddies, we'd play video games, and chill out. We stumbled upon TPB is 2002 and we loved it. Everyone else didn't know what we were talking about when we cracked jokes about Bubbles and Ricky. I though i was the only fan of the show until it now became so popular. Im glad to hear so many great reviews from people across north america. This show friggan rocks, it is comedic genius, go get it NOW!
The reviewers are not lying to how great this series is!.......2005-11-28
I testify that all the people who say how great this show is so absolutely true!
This is a must see Canadian, trailer park comedy. This a seriously funny comedy which makes Little Britain look rather pathetic in comparison!
There is a word of warning: there is a lot of swearing in it and it does go in the adult area as well. But hey! It's realistic if you look at the bright side! I was wondering myself if this is real life or not! Because people can be so pathetic when they are this desperate. No one in Trailer Park Boys is good. They are all up to something. Julian, Ricky and particularly Bubbles, makes living in a caravan park so fun! They stupid schemes to sell dope and do rape music and so on! These juvenile minded adults!
It'ssomething you have to see to believe it! Words can't fathom how outrageous and insane these people are! If you liked the Osbournes, you'd love this! Hell! I even think the scenery looks good! Very flat looking too I might add!
Trailer Park Bwoys!!!.......2005-05-07
we get to see it on paramount in ol' LND UK and my wife and I laugh our friggin brains off....well friggin worth it!
Beats the office hands down...
Bubbles Rules!!!!!
Hysterical Show.......2005-03-12
TRAILER PARK BOYS (which airs in the US on BBC America) is an absolutely hysterical Canadian sitcom about a group of guys living in a trailer park.
It is a cross between THE OFFICE and COPS. The premise is a camera crew is following a group of guys just out of prison (as they say, it is COPS from the criminals perspective). It follows them on their various schemes to get money, commit crimes, and evade the management of the trailer park.
The only problem, the show airs on BBC America with the foul language bleeped out. On the DVD set, there are no bleeps. It just isn't as funny that way. Sort of like THE OSBOURNES.
The DVD has a few extras, a music video, deleted scenes and some rather interesting commentary tracks.
A great DVD set. Worth picking up.

A top-notch Randolph Scott western with an explosive start .......2007-01-07
Between 1951 and 1954 the prolific Randolph Scott completed six westerns for Hungarian director Andre de Toth in between times he still found time to make a couple more westerns most notable of which was the highly rated and commercially successful HANGMAN'S KNOT (1952) A Scott-Brown Production for Columbia Pictures. Written and Directed by Roy Huggins. This was Huggins only film as director. Later he moved into television and had such series as MAVERICK and THE ROCKFORD FILES to his credit.
The story is of a small band of Confederate soldiers led by Major Matt Stewart (Randolph Scott) who following an attack a Union gold shipment discover from a Union soldier survivor that the war has been over a month. Lee Marvin plays one of the soldiers in his first of several films with Scott; another of the soldiers is young Claude Jarman Jr. Most of the action takes place in the Sierra Stage Line Way Station, where the soldiers are pinned down along with the stagecoach passengers and station keepers by a renegade band posing as the lawmen led by Quincy (Ray Teal) who were after the gold. Among the passengers are former Union army nurse (Donna Reed) and her no-good fiancée (Richard Denning). The tension rises as the advantage shifts from one side to the other before the leading up the eventual final showdown. A credit to all concerned with high production values throughout.
Hopefully Columbia will digitally re-master other fifty-odd year-old Randolph Scott Westerns like the wonderful RIDE LONESOME (1959) and his penultimate film COMANCHE STATION (1960) they deserve the best of treatment and care for future generations to enjoy.
Great Scott! Great Western!.......2004-06-28
This is the stuff that Columbia/Tristar should be releasing on disc
not another deluxe, special edition of "Spiderman" Randolph Scott is
in top form as the leader of a band of rebel confederates who after
Robbing a Union Convoy & killing all on board they come to find out
that the civil war has ended over a month ago. Faced with choice of
being executed or fleeing for home. As men option the latter only
a posse of bounty hunters ruin the groups chances as
they are forced to take hostages and hold up in a stagecoach shack.
One of the best in a series of good westerns made by Randolph
Scott in the 1950's This one sports a great plot with a good cast
of characters including Donna Reed,Richard Denning and Lee Marvin
The remaster quality is excellent(almost blinding) in it's bright
technicolor glory. Come on Columbia get the lead out of that film
vault and release "The Bounty Hunter" and "Commanche Station"!
Minor Scott masterpiece.......2000-04-05
Director Roy Huggins has produced a winner in the classic oater HANGMAN'S KNOT. Released in 1952, this film features Scott, with a supporting cast including Donna Reed and Lee Marvin, as a Confederate agent sent west with a small party to capture Yankee gold for the beleaguered Confederacy. Action is taught and the dialogue, in its leanness, is at times reminiscent of the later Budd Boetticher Scott westerns of the late 1950s. This is certainly one of the best Randy Scott movies of the 1950s and maintains interest thoughout.

Description
Berlin, the capital of reunified Germany, is a city with a glittering present and a dark past. A historian leads the viewer through the new Berlin, revealing the many traces of history in a city that served as Frederick the Great's, Bismarck's, and Hitler's capital before it became the front line of the Cold War and the place where the Berlin Wall was built and destroyed. Learn that there is more than meets the eye at the Brandenburg Gate, Potsdamer Platz, Nazi buildings, Jewish cemeteries, Checkpoint Charlie, and many other places steeped in history.
Writer-Narrator is Brian Ladd, former fellow of the American Academy in Berlin and noted author of the book Ghosts of Berlin, published by The University of Chicago Press.
Customer Reviews:
Worthwhile Documentary.......2006-09-19
This is a worthwhile documentary for anyone who plans to visit Berlin or simply wants to know more about the city from its beginnings 800 years ago through its growth as a major European capital in the late 1800s to the horrors of the 1930s and 1940s and then to its stunning and redemptive rebirth today.
The DVD has, besides an intro and conclusion, six sections offering images of period paintings and photographs and contemporary shots of buildings and other architecture. The sections cover the Middle Ages, the royal period, modernity (meaning the early 1900s), the Nazi era, the Jewish experience, and the Cold War years. Production values are high for what is essentially an academic approach. Brian Ladd, the writer-narrator, and John Woods, the producer, use the video medium effectively to tell the story. As an example, they cleverly use fleeting shots from a moving train as segues -- transporting, as it were, the viewer from one section to the next.
There are too many interesting details in all periods to enumerate here. Especially valuable, however, is the long look at the Jews of Berlin, numbering up to 200,000 in their heyday in the pre-Hitler years. Ladd and Woods show Berlin's largest Jewish cemetery, where they linger with some irony on the tombstones of those who fought for their German fatherland in World War I. They also take the viewer to the former site of a concentration camp just outside Berlin, where barracks and other sections have been reconstructed and posted with photos and text to remind Berliners and tourists alike what went on there. It is evident that Berlin, rather than hiding the brutality of its Nazi past, is facing it publicly and memorializing its victims not only here but, as is shown, at the Central Holocaust Memorial, an architectural shock, and at the New Jewish Museum, under construction.
Several key people are interviewed, including a history professor, a professor of architecture, and the director of the New Berlin Synagogue. Not to be missed are the enlightening remarks of Peter Pulzer, professor emeritus of government from Oxford University, on the Jews in Berlin then and now.
A Waste of Time.......2006-08-19
Berlin's "hidden history" remains hidden in this uninformative, self-indulgent pastiche. The film makers spend too much time on out-the-window shots from the S-Bahn, without even trying to identify the passing sights. Tendentious disquisitions on famous sights fail to identify the sites, the neighborhoods, or even streets and surrounding buildings. Too little history and too little geographical information make this film a waste of time.
Intelligent Exploration of Berlin.......2005-03-14
This film is more scholarly than the typical "explore-a-region" documentary because it was written by an expert on the city, Brian Ladd. Instead of touring Berlin region by region, the film tours the city by historical era, starting in the Middle Ages, going through the Royal Era, the Weimar Era, the Nazi Era, the Divided City and the present. Ladd explores and explains the different types of architecture found in the city, and how the buildings relate to the various times in which they were built. There is extensive time devoted to "Jewish Berlin," both past and present, including the magnificent synagogue and the new Jewish museum. The DVD also contains, as extras, erudite discussions by Professors Johannes Helmrath and Peter Pulzer, who add additional historical background. Highly recommended for anyone who is planning to visit Berlin, or who is just interested in this fascinating city.
For those who want to see more of Berlin, I also recommend the masterpiece: "Belin, Symphony of a Great City," filmed in 1927. It is a remarkable film that puts you in the middle of the city before it was destroyed by war. Additionally, Wim Wenders' film "Wings of Desire," while not about Berlin per se, contains excellent footage of how Berlin looked just a few years before the fall of the wall.
Now We Know........2003-02-09
"Berlin's Hidden History" provides an insightful glimpse into the Berlin of today and the psyche of its citizens, primarily as revealed in restorative and modern architecture, reflecting the pervasive influence of the past. Emphasis is on events of the post-Weimar Republic, however earlier history is not neglected.
A balanced and enlightening view of a great city's past.
