Prisoner of Zenda has all the characters that are so identifiable a real classic movie for the family.

5 out of 5 stars A classic and an attempted classic........2007-06-16

I think most film fans will agree that the Ronald Colman version of this oft-told tale is the finest, perhaps because the chemistry between Colman and Madeleine Carroll was perfect, but there is no denying that Technicolor would have added another touch of magnificence. This is the advantage of the 1952 version; the Technicolor is breathtaking, and while the performances were quite good, there is virtually no chemistry between the leads. Deborah Kerr is surprisingly cold as Flavia, but certainly very beautiful. Stewart Granger is nearly perfect as Rudolph. This is a fine double-feature, with each version offering its' own fine points.
You may very well be enchanted by both.

5 out of 5 stars I love this movie!.......2007-06-01

I have been waiting for someone to release the 1937 version of "The Prisoner of Zenda" for quite a time. This has to be one of the best translations of novel to film of its period (and this puts it up against some stiff competition!). What really gives this version its edge is its outstanding cast. First there is the always wonderful Ronald Coleman. Too few of his movies are available on DVD and it will be a happy day indeed when a large collection of his films are issued in a box set. Along with Coleman, there are the always wonderful Madeline Caroll, C. Aubrey Smith, Raymond Massey, Mary Astor, and David Niven. However, the lion's share of acting glory must go to Douglas Fairbanks Jr. Did any actor ever have as wonderful a time playing a role as he does in this film? I doubt it and what a pleasure it is watching him play a world weary villain like Rupert of Hentzau? It really does not get any better than this!

This film comes with a 1952 remake, which though in color is just not as good as the original. The actors, Stewart Granger, Deborah Kerr and James Mason, while good just cannot match the original. However, probably serves to underscore the mastery of the first version.

5 out of 5 stars Twin "Prisoners" Capture Your Imagination!.......2007-05-15

I've always been a fan of Ronald Colman so I was excited to see that this picture was finally being released along with the remake. The cast in the 1937 film is superior to the 1952 version. Other than that, the remake is almost verbatim! Ronald Colman and Madeline Carroll are excellent and the costumes and settings are as romantic and as real as actually being in a mountain country in the latter part of the 19th century.

4 out of 5 stars The Prisoner of Zenda (1937).......2007-05-14

Definitely the better of the two films. I'd have given five stars if the soundtrack hadn't been so soft that I had to turn the volume up to the maximum just to hear it at a normal level. And that's a pity. RH

The great movie tradition of adapting high-toned novels into star-studded vehicles gets an airing in Warner DVD's Literary Classics Collection, a group of six such pictures. It's a grab bag, but some of this stuff is unmissable. The best film in the box might be the 1937 version of The Prisoner of Zenda, Anthony Hope's buckle-swashing tale of a commoner (Ronald Colman) impersonating a lookalike king. This David Selznick production is one of those sparkling examples of the Hollywood heyday of the thirties, in which every cylinder is firing at full speed: buoyant script, luscious black-and-white photography (by the great James Wong Howe), exuberant swordplay, wonderful villainy (take a bow, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., and Raymond Massey), and a lovely damsel (Madeleine Carroll). John Cromwell directed, although others chimed in. As an adventure picture, it's just about flawless. On the flip side of the disc, the 1952 remake sticks closely to the original--and the formula still works, although the zest isn't quite there. Stewart Granger steps into Colman's shoes, with Deborah Kerr and James Mason in support.

The 1948 version of The Three Musketeers is one of the lesser versions of that swashbuckler; Gene Kelly and Lana Turner leads the cast in a Technicolor-iffic but dramatically underwhelming effort. Raoul Walsh's Captain Horatio Hornblower (1950) delivers thoughtful seagoing strategies, as the British captain navigating gunships and political winds. The movie doesn't have the oomph of the usual Walsh action film, perhaps keyed instead to Gregory Peck's serious presence, but it has a gratifyingly intelligent forward motion. Plus, the Hornblower disc comes with "Captain Hareblower," a Warners cartoon with Bugs Bunny battling Yosemite Sam on the high seas.

The shipboard morality play of Melville's Billy Budd is included here, in the classic 1962 adaptation by director Peter Ustinov (who also plays Captain Vere). Terence Stamp, in his film debut, is the innocent sailor Billy, and Robert Ryan etches one of the all-time portrayals of cold-eyed cruelty as the brutal master-at-arms Claggart. A great conversation piece in the era of the repertory house, the film holds up--and a commentary track with Stamp and Steven Soderbergh provides good stuff on the actor's career start.

The 1949 M-G-M production of Madame Bovary might not please Flaubert purists, but it will impress auteurist fans of Vincente Minnelli. The tale of a wayward small-town wife is infused with Minnelli's swooning grasp of camera movement and décor, and a showpiece ballroom sequence out-duels any Max Ophuls film for swirling dance delirium. Jennifer Jones' alien presence might be a problem for modern viewers, yet her strangeness actually fits the character. This might just be the discovery of the set, which is otherwise filled out with a satisfying batch of vintage cartoons and short subjects. --Robert Horton

4 out of 5 stars Surprised at lack of quality.......2007-06-22

I purchased this set mainly for the wonderful 1937 version of "The Prisoner of Zenda." I watched that film first, and was surprised at the lack of quality there. The film does not look to be restored. The picture has a "grainy" look to it. At one point, there are several "scratch" lines running from the top to the bottom of the screen for several frames. The most disappointing flaw, however, occurs near the beginning of the movie: the soundtrack is out of sync with the picture. You see the mouths of the actors move, and there is a split-second delay before you hear the voice. This is most annoying. I have collected many box sets from Warners, and indeed, this company has been my favorite source for the classics. However, their quality does vary from one picture to another (I was very disapointed with "Brigadoon" also -- very poor picture quality). I understand that it takes time and money to restore these pictures, but it also COSTS money to add them to a classic movie collection. If a movie is worth preserving, then it's worth restoring to a near-new quality before producing the DVDs for sale. I realize that we can't have the restoration quality of "The Wizard of Oz" on every product, but for cryin' out loud, can't we at least get a copy of a print with synchronized sound?

5 out of 5 stars How I remember these films!.......2007-05-08

I waited with earnest anticipation for these films to be released. And finally my wish was granted what wondeful and delightful memorys came flooding back to me. How I remember waking early to view these films on The Prize Morning Movie, and how constantly I looked to see if these fims had been released to DVD's, and then suddenly they where all released in One Box Set. I was moved with such joy, I could not wait to view these wonderful restored colored and every thing else they do to restore these films I watched them all in one weekend, I had my own home revival of classic films with popcorn and friends, it was wonderful!!!

5 out of 5 stars Prisoner of Zenda.......2007-05-06

This Definite Literary Classic Collection is great and a great addition to one's collection. My favorite was the 1937 version of The Prisoner of Zenda.

5 out of 5 stars DVD of Horatio Hornblower... GREAT!!!.......2007-03-26

My VHS copy of Horation Hornblower was showing signs of age. I had looked for a DVD copy for three years. When I saw this collection--I bought it for that one movie, but I love Billy Bud, and it's great that it has a commentary. I wish Horatio had one also.

5 out of 5 stars 6 GREAT FILMS. GREAT PRESENTATION. GREAT VALUE. BRAVO WB.......2007-03-12

Like so many other Warner Brothers releases, this set will spoil you. A 5 disc set of 6 great films (2 versions of ZENDA on one disc), beautifully remastered, exquisitely packaged, and selling here on Amazon for a bargain price.

This is one to tell your friends about, because there's something for everyone here. I echo all the positive comments left by others, and underscore emphatically how amazing it is to finally have a proper widescreen BILLY BUDD. The other films in the collection haven't been as hard to see or own as BILLY, but BILLY suffered from being made by a small company (Allied Artists).

Warner rectifies that error now with this great new set, which is a no-brainer purchase for any true cinephile.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent classic film based on classic novel.......2005-04-01

While classic films do not often live up to our cinematic aspirations, the strength of the story (which is based on the classic by Anthony Hope) makes this an exciting and enjoyable film. It is one of my all-time classic favorites, right up there with Beau Geste and Lawrence of Arabia, etc. It has all the necessary well-choreographed fight scenes and a compelling love story. The story is about a man who must pose as a drunken prince when the Prince is made too incapacitated to assume the throne. His nemesis plotted to take the throne but was foiled because he could not proclaim the imposter without revealing his scheme. The story follows from there. I highly recomend this.

Brand new, factory sealed, fully licensed DVD manufactured in Brazil. NTSC format. Playable on any North American DVD player. High quality full screen black and white image. Original English dialog with optional subtitles in Portuguese. Portuguese subtitles do not appear unless turned on and they can be easily turned off. The following review appears in the Internet Movie Database: "'The Prisoner of Zenda' is one of the most fondly-remembered films of the '30s, and for good reason! It offers Ronald Colman, one of Hollywood's most beloved British stars, in the dual role of Rudolf, crown prince of a small European kingdom, and Rudolf Rassendyll, his look-alike British cousin, end product of a brief affair of an ancestor (as the Englishman puts it, "Fishing in forbidden waters!"); the radiant Madeleine Carroll, best-known as Robert Donat's leading lady in Hitchcock's classic 'The 39 Steps', as the royal betrothed, who falls in love with the pretender; Raymond Massey as Black Michael, Rudolf's scheming half-brother; and, best of all, a youthful Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., son of silent Hollywood's greatest swashbuckler (and a pretty fair swashbuckler, himself!), as the suavely villainous ally of Michael. The story is simple, and has been done many times before, but never with such elan; drugged monarch-to-be must be impersonated by look-alike for coronation, lest kingdom fall into hands of evil half-brother. In the hands of this PERFECT cast (with terrific support by C. Aubrey Smith, a young David Niven, and Mary Astor) the tale becomes a stylish tale of love, intrigue, and derring-do! High points include an astonishingly beautiful Royal Ball, where Colman and Carroll reveal their love; a very funny yet menacing meeting between Colman and Fairbanks, as they discuss the real King's potential fate; and best of all, a MAGNIFICENT climactic swordfight between the pair, as they lunge and parry furiously through the halls of a castle, while exchanging quips and one-liners!"

5 out of 5 stars CHARMING ADVENTURE FANTASY ..........2006-12-17

This is the definitive adaptation of the Anthony Hope novel of the same name. The charming and velvet voiced Ronald Colman plays a dual role: that of Rasendyll, a British commoner, and that of Rudolf, a distant cousin and the man who would be King.

Rasendyll is vacationing in a mythical country where his distant cousin and doppelganger, Prince Rudolf, is soon to be crowned King. A chance meeting between the two shows the commoner to be the more noble of the two. When Rudolf temporarily succumbs to a plot that renders him temporarily unconscious and unable to make his all important coronation, the look a like Rasendyll is pressed into service and takes his place.

When Rasendyll shows up at the coronation as Rudolf, Michael (Raymond Massey), the jealous half brother who hatched to plot to prevent Rudolf from making his coronation is taken by surprise and constrained from saying anything as to do so would reveal his part in the plot. Michael's henchman, Hentzau (Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.), soon discovers that the man who was crowned King is an imposter. He finds and takes as prisoner the unconscious Rudolf.

In the meantime, Rasendyll, as the newly crowned King Rudolf, meets and falls in love with the Princess (Madeleine Carroll) who is intended to be his Queen. Soon after meeting him, she notices that he seems different from the Rudolf that she thought she knew and falls in love with him.

When Rasendyll is informed that his cousin is now a prisoner, he loses no time in going to the rescue with Rudolf's two faithful retainers, Colonel Zapt (C. Aubrey Smith) and Captain Fritz Von Talinheim (David Niven). This is followed by some swashbuckling swordplay between the rascally Hentzau and the noble at heart Rassendyll, the man who should be King.

To find out how it ends, watch the movie. You will not be disappointed. Ronald Colman is divinely charming in his dual role. C. Aubrey Smith and a very young and delightful David Niven are terrific as Rudolf's faithful and loyal officers. Raymond Massey is appropriately sinister as the jealous half brother. Madeleine Carroll is beautiful as the story book princess who falls in love with Rassendyll but knows where her duty lies. It is Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., however, who deserves special mention, as in playing the role of the swashbuckling Hentzau he very nearly steals the show out from under Ronald Colman!

Fans of Ronald Colman and Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. will especially love this film, as will all those who love classic films.

    1 out of 5 stars Stay Away!.......2002-01-03

If you love either the book or the classic 1930's movie STAY AWAY. Either is a masterpiece as it's just a fascinating story with swashbuckling, heroism, and an honest hero. Apart from this version. I don't know or care where it's from. All you need to know is that they took "creative license" and now our twins are not interested in the same woman. Instead the hero is interested in an unattached woman... This ruins at least half the point of the story about being honorable even when it means foregoing something you cherish. The point of these stories is to instill honorable characteristics in the young, to me anyway. Without the honor of Rassendyll it's quite impossible. I just threw this away as soon as it became apparent they'd changed the story. Read the book (and the follow up) and watch the classic film. That's enough...

The following is part of a review which appears in Amazon for the VHS version: "This 1938 production of the life of Marie Antoinette is lavish and sumptuous with exquisite costumes. Norma Sheares is luminous in the role of Marie Antoinette, while Robert Morley, in his acting debut, is perfectly cast as the hapless and ineffectual Louis XVI. While not historically accurate and a bit of license is taken in detailing the life of Marie Antoinette, it is, nonetheless, an immensely entertaining, opulent and lush, historical drama. It shows how a naive Austrian princess came to power as the Queen of France. It details her hopes and dreams and shows how reality made them come crashing down upon her.Norma Shearer makes an exquisite Marie Antoinette and portrays her sympathetically. Robert Morley makes a remarkable acting debut as Louis XVI, the King who would rather have been a locksmith. Joseph Shildkraut is divine as the unctiously sinister Duke d'Orleans, and John Barrymore is excellent as Louis XV, the King who is clearly exasperated with his grandson, the Dauphin. Alice George gives a crisp performance as the miffed Madame DuBarry. Last, but certainly not least, the gloriously handsome Tyrone Power gives a tender performance as the faithful and loving Count Axel De Fersen. Of all the roles, his, along with that of the Duke d'Orleans, are the roles that deviate the most historically. While the film does take some license, it is not so inaccurate, however, as to have reinvented history. The viewer should remember that this is not a documentary but, rather, a bit of entertainment based upon historical characters and actual events."

Since the Amazon editorial review for this item has, in large part, quoted my review of the VHS edition of this film without attribution, I have decided to post that review in its entirety for this item.

This 1938 production of the life of Marie Antoinette is lavish and sumptuous with exquisite costumes. Norma Shearer is luminous in the role of Marie Antoinette, while Robert Morley, in his acting debut, is perfectly cast as the hapless and ineffectual Louis XVI. While not historically accurate and a bit of license is taken in detailing the life of Marie Antoinette, it is, nonetheless, an immensely entertaining, opulent and lush, historical drama. It shows how a naive Austrian princess came to power as the Queen of France. It details her hopes and dreams and shows how reality made them come crashing down upon her.

When Marie Antoinette's mother, Austrian Empress Marie Theresa, arranges a marriage with the Dauphin of France, Marie Antoinette is elated. When she arrives in France and meets her betrothed, the unprepossessing Dauphin, Louis XVI, she is disappointed. Still, she tries to make the best of it, only to discover that her husband is unable or unwilling to consummate their marriage. Gulled by her husband's nefarious cousin, Duke Phillipe d'Orleans (John Shildkraut), she becomes a regular party girl, going to glittering balls and behaving in a way unseemly for a future Queen of France. Spending lavishly, she gives no thought to money, antagonizing her future subjects. It is during one of her sojourns that she meets the Count Axel De Fersen (Tyrone Power), the love of her life.

Shortly after, she angers King Louis XV (John Barrymore) by publicly insulting his paramour, the infamous Madame DuBarry (Alice George), and he threatens to have her marriage to the Dauphin annulled. The Dauphin, however, makes it clear to the King, his grandfather, just how much Marie Antoinette means to him, and there is no further talk of annulment. Shortly thereafter, the King dies of smallpox, and Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette become the King and Queen of France.

With the new King's sexual dysfunction apparently cured, the royal couple begin having children, first a daughter and then a son. Their cousin and now enemy, the Duke d'Orleans, a political intriguer of the first order, is busy stirring up the rabble into a mob frenzy, as an economic downturn leaves France vulnerable to political unrest. As the unrest grows into revolution, the Queen's past as a profligate party girl, as well as a scandal over a fraudulently purloined diamond necklace, come back to haunt her, and she finds herself reviled by her subjects. The King, too, comes under the scrutiny of the mob and found wanting by his no longer loyal subjects. Once France is in the throes of revolution all is lost, and the royal family finds themselves under house arrest. Still, a daring escape is attempted, only to end tragically. The rest is history.

Norma Shearer makes an exquisite Marie Antoinette and portrays her sympathetically. The viewer should remember that this is not a documentary but, rather, a bit of entertainment based upon historical characters and actual events. Keeping this in mind, the viewer will, no doubt, enjoy this movie.
