Disney's take on this historical confrontation between European settlers and Native Americans follows the paths of two future lovers. One is British adventurer John Smith, who travels the Atlantic with the Virginia Company to establish Jamestown. On the shore is Pocahontas, a typical Disney heroine: bright, beautiful, mischievous, and motherless. The two meet in the untamed wilds of America (the first meeting is quite divine), fall in love, and try to ward off the warring factions. It's Disney's version of a Native American West Side Story. Two Disney trademarks do not quite muster up: the villain isn't hissable and the score's only high point is the Oscar-winning "Colors of the Wind." Calling it "historical" is a stretch, but Disney created a very natural look at the two cultures. The Native American characters are handled especially well, and kids should be intrigued by their world; the movie is a far different lesson from the one their parents and grandparents learned. Disney has discovered a few things, though: you don't have to kill to solve your problems, and you can end the film without a happily-ever-after, illustrated by a touching final visual. (Ages 5 and older) --Doug Thomas

Disney's direct-to-video sequel to their 1995 hit places Pocahontas in harm's way in London, where she is almost tossed into jail and has some other mishaps. She's not alone, however: a cute raccoon named Meeko does a nice job as the obligatory funny animal. The songs are about as memorable as those in the first film, but the art and animation maintain far higher standards than most animated sequels dumped onto tape. If you don't drive yourself nuts thinking about the appalling historical revisionism at work here, this is passable family entertainment. --Tom Keogh

Description

All the magic of Disney's Academy Award(R)-winning film POCAHONTAS (Best Original Song, 1995) continues in a fun-filled adventure that finds Pocahontas setting sail for an exciting new world, England. With her comical companions Flit, Meeko, and Percy, along for the ride, this spectacular film promises plenty of thrills and laughter for everyone. As an ambassador of peace, Pocahontas is swept away by London's "curious" customs. Attempting to fit in, she makes friends with the dashing English diplomat John Rolfe, and Mrs. Jenkins, his lovable housemaid, both of whom help Pocahontas prepare for her debut at the celebrated Hunt Ball. There, she must convince the King of England that her people are truly civilized in order to stop an armada moving against them. Pocahontas soon finds herself at odds with the scheming Ratcliffe, but when a mysterious stranger comes to her rescue, the courageous Pocahontas must choose between the love of her past ... and the path to her future. Told through brilliant Disney animation, five incredible new songs, and unforgettable characters, POCAHONTAS II: JOURNEY TO A NEW WORLD, is alive with all the colors of a Disney classic.

1 out of 5 stars Let down........2007-06-27

Seeing as how Pocahontas was the worlds best animated film to date you would think that the sequal would be almost, if not quite as good as the original. This film however was a huge disappointment to me. There is only one remotely good song in it. And John Rolfe can't hold a candle to John Smith!

1 out of 5 stars AAAHHH!! HORRIBLE SEQUEL!!!!.......2007-05-26

THIS IS THE MOST AWFUL MOVIE EVER!!!!

I LOVE the original Pocahontas and that is probably one of my favorite Disney movies. But I DID NOT LIKE THIS MOVIE!!!!! DON'T EVER SEE THIS MOVIE!!! AAHH!!! Save yourself the torture!!!

The songs were obviously pathetic seeing that I can't remember any of them, whereas I remember the songs from other good Disney movies that I haven't seen in years! They totally botched the original characters, drew them awfully, and the ones they added were disgusting. John Rolfe is definitely a creep, but apparently he's "historically accurate." To heck with historically accurate! Who CARES? It's a Disney movie!!! NONE of them are historically accurate, and nobody cares!

So here's the storyline: Pocahontas goes to England as "an ambassador of peace" to stop the British king from attacking her people. There she meets John Rolfe, they fall in love. Then they go to an English ball where Pocahontas will prove to the king that she and her people are not savages and then the king will not attack them. During the ball several insane things happen and Pocahontas actually succeeds in doing the opposite of her mission. The British people have a "bear baiting" where they kill a bear for entertainment. Pocahontas rushes forward and freaks out, calls the king and his people savages for treating bears like this, (Pocahontas wouldn't do that!!!!) and miraculously she doesn't get bitten by this bear even though she's right by its face. The king of course orders that she be thrown in jail and so they do. And Rolfe doesn't even try to stop it all! John Smith (unfortunately drawn very sloppily) overhears this piece of news in a pub (since when does go to pubs?), and goes to find Rolfe (I can't remember how he knows Rolfe exists, and quite frankly I would love to forget this whole movie exists), and together they go to rescue her. Except that part didn't work for me because there aren't supposed to be two heroes in a Disney movie. It's just not fair. Somehow then they get out of that scrape, and then there's a scene where Pocahontas wants to go back to the king and straighten things out. But if the king put her in jail, then he will be mad that she's out of jail without his OK, right? But somehow that's overlooked in the end. And John Smith says she's crazy for wanting to go back and all this stuff that he would never say to Pocahontas. After that it was so boring that I can't remember anything until the very end, where John Smith comes running over to Pocahontas all excited that he's getting his own ship and is going to travel the world. Since when does he care about all that? He's seen "hundreds of new worlds," according to the first movie, and he's been on voyages all over the place. So why does he care suddenly now? And Rolfe is watching all this with a bratty, pouty look on his face. And then Pocahontas quite bluntly dumps John Smith and goes off to the New World with Rolfe. And that's it.

Isn't that awful?

I seriously hope they make a Pocahontas III and something needs to happen to Rolfe and then Pocahontas and John Smith get back together. That's how it should be.

P.S. Oh yeah, I just remembered one of the songs. But I wish I hadn't. Something about a nice day in London town. It was awful.

this film is great. Historically it is a little inaccurate. However it is a very well done disney film.

1 out of 5 stars KILLS EVERTHING.......2007-03-27

this is a horrible movie it ruins the original movie(wich i loved till a saw this) she runs off with john rolf instead of john smith yes i know in real life she marries john rolf and never liked john smith but if they make the original un-realistic don't make this one more realistic okay what ever happen 2 "i will always be with you"? i can not stand watching the original now knowing she wont like john smith later on this movie killed eveything to do with the original! if u haven't seen this yet keep that way or else u will regret it!hope this review help bye.

(ps if u want to see a good disney sequal see anyone but this!)

Disney did a pretty good job with this sequel. Of course, sequels are never quite as good as the original but this is pretty close. My four year old loves it!

    Description

When Pocahontas (Jody Lawrance) agrees to marry two-fisted adventurer Captain John Smith (Anthony Dexter), she does so to create a lasting bond between her people and the settlers of Jamestown. Seeing their union as a marriage of convenience, Smith is reluctant at first to return her love, but soon comes to realize how much he cares for the beautiful Indian princess. So when her jealous ex-lover, Opechanco (Stuart Randall), decides to break the truce and wipe out the colony, he murders Pocahontas' brother before he can warn the tribe. Claiming the right to avenge his wife, Smith challenges Opechanco to a knife-and-tomahawk fight, a battle to the death that will not only determine Smith and Pocahontas' fate, but that of the New World, as well.

    5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Romantic!.......2005-11-04

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. It is so romantic! It's an idealized version of the Pocahontas story. (Hence, the title "the Legend) It's the type of movie us women swoon over. Miles O'Keefe is incredibly sexy and charming as John Smith. Seeing him scantily clad is nearly reason enough to buy this. Sandrine Holt is a youthful, energetic Pocahontas, both innocent and beautiful. She is different from her tribe and her fascination with John Smith is understandable. Great film!

An ancient prophecy foretold three coming invasions against the Indian nation. The first invasion would come from the North, the second would be the "black robes" from the West. They have survived the first two, now the third was about to begin. So we are told in the opening sequence to 'Pocahontas - The Legend.'

Definitely not a masterpiece, but does succeed as a rather enjoyable, simplistic rendering of the famous love story of Pocahontas and John Smith. Sandrine Holt is absolutely beautiful as the Native American princess Pocahontas and the much maligned Miles O'Keefe is really quite good as the handsome and stalwart Englishman John Smith.

The problems with this film stem from budget limitations and shoddy production values. One of the first drawbacks I noticed was that everything was shot in closeups, so you never saw any beautiful panoramic views of the natural beauty to be found in the American wilderness. This indicated to me that their budget didn't allow them the opportunity to travel to any remote locations to get capture those vistas.

Secondly, I found the choice of clothing worn by the Indians somewhat disconcerting. Everything was exactly the same color and texture. It looked like the entire wardrobe for the tribe had been cut from one large piece of material. I'm not an expert in Native American clothing but I would've expected to see a variety of colors, shades and skins in keeping with the various types of animals that would have been indigenous to the area in 1607. There were other glaring discrepancies, such as the unauthentic look of the English fort that only hampered viewers imagination and ability to become immersed in the storyline.

If you're a Sandrine Holt fan or you have young children who like Pocahontas you'll certainly want to add this DVD to your collection. If not, it's a decent watch as a rental.

1 out of 5 stars WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?.......2005-09-07

If I had been paying attention, I would have realized that with Miles O'Keeffe in this film (Tarzan, the Ape Man, Sword of the Valiant - The Legend of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight), it wasn't going to be Last of the Mohicans. Actually, I was watching it to see Tony Goldwyn, who usually turns in a solid performance. Unfortunately, the same wig mistress who got hold of Miles in Sword of the Valiant - turning him into the Little Dutch Boy and totally distracting from the rest of the film - must have worked on Tony in this one, making him look ludicrous and again distracting from the film. Which only goes to prove, even though clothes don't make the man, a bad wig can ruin a performance and even an entire film.

Which makes me wonder, what were the filmmakers thinking? Couldn't they see? But then, I could ask that question concerning pretty much everything in this film. I can't believe it was ever made. From the very beginning, when the first Englishmen set foot on land and are met by native Americans who already speak English, you know this is not going to have high, or even believable, standards. And were those boards making up the walls of the fort sawed at the local sawmill, or just picked up at Home Depot?

Now, the excuse of low budget can be used to explain a lot of things; but it can't explain a poor script, poor directing and poor acting. There are plenty of great films out there that were made on shoe string budgets. But I think the motivation here is not to produce a great film, but just to have an excuse for Miles O'Keeffe to take off his shirt and a beautiful woman to gush over him. Which, in addition to everything else, cheapens the story of Pocahantas and John Smith.

If you want to watch a movie about Pocahantas, watch Disney's version; or, better yet, Last of the Mohicans, which is still the best movie about native Americans and the settlement of this country. If you want to watch a bad wig destroy a performance (Tony Goldwyn's - although I think his accent, the director and the script all helped), watch this movie. Then follow it with Sword of the Valiant and just make it a bad wig/bad movie night.

This video is excellent for educators to show. First show this movie and have students go over the facts about Pocahontas. Write all the facts down, discuss the movie. Then, show Disney's Pocahontas. Point out the many non-facts in that movie and compare the differences. After showing the two movies and comparing, have the students write Pocahontas: Fact vs. Myth. It is a lot of fun, takes 3 days of 80 minute block times and helps the students to see Pocahontas for the legend and the human she was.

3 out of 5 stars an early diplomat.......2006-05-10

This work does a great job as presenting Pocahontas as a diplomat. Her desire to get two groups to live peacefully and to learn from other cultures seemed strong.
I usually don't care for cheesy reenactments of history in documentaries. This work used that feature, but it helped a bit. It got tired seeing the same paintings and sculptures of key players here. The reenactments helped to break things up.
The documentary states that John Smith was 27 when he met Pocahontas of age 13. When actors portrayed the two, the female was significantly shorter than the male. However, the fact that their relationship would be considered statutory rape now was never brought up. In all fairness, a land that is not even a nation yet wouldn't have laws against such conduct. Please forgive the presentism here, but if the idea of older men kicking it with female minors bothers you, then you might not want to see this.
I was glad to learn more about this famous Native woman. However, I think differently when I put on my non-Eurocentric cap. If the Natives were on the land first, why should any Native feel obligated to "share the land" with newcomers? In David Henry Hwang's "M. Butterfly," a character asks, "Would we celebrate a white female leader giving up her claims in order to be with an Asian man the way we salute Madame Butterfly?" The same could be asked here. Would anyone cheer on a British girl who wanted the British to share the United Kingdom with foreigners? If a British or white American woman abandoned her culture to embrace an alien one that was a potential threat to America or Britain, would we be singing her praises 500 years later? I doubt it, yet this documentary doesn't raise these critical questions.

      Description

On May 13, 1607, three English sailing vessels dropped anchor beside a small island fringed by swamps in the James River, Virginia. On board: 104 colonists who will establish the first successful English settlement in the New World at Jamestown. The exploits of the brash, swashbuckling John Smith; the wily, venerable chief Powhatan; and his infatuated daughter Pocahontas will be recited, retold, and embroidered until they gather the status of an epic founding myth of the new nation. Now, on the 400th anniversary of Jamestown, science is revealing the truth behind the myth. Virginia archaeologists have recently discovered the site of Chief Powhatan's capital, Werowocomoco, some 17 miles from Jamestown beside the York River. This is the very spot where the captive John Smith had his famous life-and-death encounter with the mighty chief, in which (so the story goes) the smitten Pocahontas begged her father to spare the Englishman. The unique investigation of the site will be followed in depth exclusively by NOVA as archeologists for the first time reveal the Native American side of the Jamestown story.

These films epitomize the bargain-basement schlock that gives cartoons and children's entertainment a bad name. When Hercules is assigned a mere four labors as punishment for recklessly hurling thunderbolts, he's joined by Falina, a princess who's been turned into a sable. She tries to be comic but is merely obnoxious. Hercules defeats the Stymphalian birds, which are drawn as robots, and the Hydra, a clumsy three-headed dragon. He also tangles with a Gorgon (borrowed from the legend of Perseus) and goes after some golden apples. The result is a pointless bore, despite the ham- handed moralizing at the end.

Pocahontas fares no better. A conventional Indian girl, she wants to befriend a very silly John Smith, but the nasty medicine man insists all outsiders are evil. The songs by Megan Cavallari and David Goldsmith barely qualify as doggerel: "Look out, strangers, for the Medicine Man / I'm on the warpath and I have a plan." In both films, the animation veers between painfully inept and unintentionally comic.

This DVD offers parents an effective new tool for curbing their kids' media intake: given the choice between watching it or no TV at all, most kids will opt for the latter. --Charles Solomon
