Well, it had to happen--Archibald Asparagus is hosting his own VeggieTales show. The 15th video from this groundbreaking Christian-lite company gives us plenty of what makes the series so much fun: leader Bob the Tomato, daffy Larry the Cucumber, catchy songs, and scattershot humor. Tired of the wacky ways of the normal VeggieTales shows, Archibald wants to inject an element of class. First up: an all-vegetable staging of Hamlet. Unfortunately, the only script that can be found is a slightly different version called "Omelet." The Bard's famous lines take a beating with the usual Monty Python-esque humor of the Veggie crew. Next, after an Archibald-influenced "Silly Songs with Larry" segment, the featured event of the evening proves to be the lost Gilbert & Sullivan musical Lyle the Kindly Viking. This brawny band of Vikings love their job (and have an affinity for big-screen TVs) but cannot understand why the meek Lyle (Junior Asparagus, natch) wants to share his meager belongings with their victims. Certainly, the sharing ways of Lyle will win the day. After such experiments as the Larry-Boy shows, which dropped the series' familiar opening and even Bob himself, this familiarly structured VeggieTales video is a joy to watch and illustrates how far the creators have come while sticking to their roots. We love 'Lyle'. It is such a tenderhearted tale, and I never get tired of seeing this with my children. I love the lessons it teaches. This is one of our favorite all-time Veggie Tales.

A show starring Junior? What could be better?.......2004-12-01

The first part of the show is the Shakespeare play "Omlet". This is another great version of a literary classic. The classic song is "Larry's High Silk Hat", which features classic music. Then is the lost play by Gilbert and Sullivan, "Lyle, the Kindly Viking". It stars Junior Asparagus. I love him! That's part of what makes this story funny. What also makes it funny is the constant presence of Bob and Larry. One of their best yet.

Junior Asparagus is by far my favorite veggie, and he is featured in this cute take on "generosity". Larry the cucumber is also featured with his dry wit and eyebrow-raising jokes. Even my stalwart husband got a laugh out of this cute DVD.

I bought this for my daughter for Christmas last year. She is almost 2, but she loves the Veggie Tales. As with all of the Veggie Tales shows, they teach very good lessons. This one has to be about sharing. I like how they use a theme for each of their shows they come out with. This one in particular the veggie's are all vikings whom rob the poor and Lyle the friendly viking takes his share of the gold back to whom the others robbed the gold from. Eventually the other vikings decide that what they were doing was wrong. Another great tale from Big Idea.
