Comparing Godspell to its near-contemporaries Jesus Christ Superstar and Hair is unavoidable, but Godspell has developed its own unique following. With their thrift-store-meets-circus-performer garb, the characters in David Greene's adaptation of the popular off-Broadway production may look more like the hippies in Hair than the biblical personages of Superstar. But Godspell isn't really about the "Age of Aquarius," nor does it adopt a dark or operatic tone towards its subject matter, the Gospel according to Matthew. The mood is, instead, upbeat and uplifting (at least until the crucifixion sequence).

The film opens with youthful city dwellers from various walks of life dropping their activities to follow John the Baptist (David Haskell from the original New York production). They sing ("Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord") as he leads them into a fountain where they are (metaphorically) baptized. There they meet Jesus (Victor Garber). Frizzy hair and mime makeup aside, the handsome young Garber (Titanic, Annie) is convincing in his film debut. Once baptized, they follow him around various scenic New York locations, singing and acting out passages from the Scriptures.

The largely unknown cast is talented and charismatic, but the film is only fitfully engaging on an emotional level because only Jesus, John, and Judas (Haskell again) emerge as distinct characters. Stephen Schwartz's pleasing pop-rock score, however, helps to smooth over the rough spots, and Robin Lamont's hit version of "Day by Day" remains a highlight. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

4 out of 5 stars Godspell.......2007-07-07

I bought this movie because I love the interesting rendition of the Gospel acording to Matthew, and the music is outstanding. I realize it is over 30 years old, but it still has a wonderful message. The scene when they are singing and dancing on top of the World Trade Center is extremely moving considering what that building now represents to us all as Americans. It brought me to tears.

2 out of 5 stars Superficial and emotionally weak.......2007-07-04

Many reviewers have given this very high ratings, and I'm not putting them down. The following is my reaction to the movie.

Here is why I only gave the movie 2 stars: 1) The story only depicted Jesus and his followers as basically having fun 2) Even at the time just before and during the crucifixion, the police did not capture him though they were in the background, no one tortured him, & Jesus did not seem to suffer much in his "crucifixion." 4)Then there was the cast. In fact, all performers were very good. But to have the same person play John the Baptist and Judas did not work for me at all. The actor was fine, but those two figures are just opposite in their role in Jesus' life. I suppose the director may have thought it a joke. 5)I thought the sound quality suffered, the songs did not seem sung strongly, even though I suspect they were.

The views of New York City were wonderful with many photos of the Twin Towers and other places.

My son was interested in trying out for a production of Godspell, Jr. at his high school - so my mother bought this DVD on ebay so we could all see it to become familiar with it. My mother made it through the whole movie but laughed whenever trying to tell us about it. All she could say is "oh, that was just awful". My son didn't make it 10 minutes. I then tried it and I made it all the way through but it was painful. How all of these good reviews got here, I have no idea! It was so bad that my son reconsidered and nearly didn't try out. I convinced him that he should do it for the experience - after all, you can't be choosy if you're planning to do this for a living! He got the part of Jesus and his school just performed it the past two nights. I agree with another young reviewer who said he would rather watch his school's version! This movie = horrible. The actual play is wonderful. Me, my mother and everyone who went were just blown away at how brilliant the play was. And when I read that the goofy looking Jesus from the movie (Victor Garber) is the same man who is the handsome architecht from Titanic...I couldn't believe it! If you want to see Godspell, look for a live version and save yourself the agony of this DVD!

5 out of 5 stars classic.......2007-05-23

Having been involved in a production of Godspell in the '80's, it was a pleasant review of a wonderful experience of many years ago. I loved it then and I still love it. The score is timeless and beautiful. I highly recommend this show and will watch it many more times.

5 out of 5 stars As great today as it was 34 yrs ago !.......2007-05-16

An absolute classic musical! Fantastic songs, and another chance to see the twin towers of New York as they once were.

Description

Sado-erotic French literary masterpiece The Story Of O is updated, unrestrained and unleashed courtesy of infamous euro-cult master Jess Franco! Odile, a young nymphet played by the luscious Alicia Princípe, submits to more than she bargained for when she is seduced into a sexual game by her shameless neighbors. Torrid afternoon threesomes soon transgress into a haven of degradation when two brutal perverts enter the lurid scene. How far will Odile's carnal curiosity push her before the ultimate climax is fulfilled?

Daniel Katz ( NIGHT OF 1,000 SEXES) co-stars in this scorching tale of sex and sadism that remains one of Franco's most renowned early 80s features. Severin Films is proud to present it now fully restored from original Spanish vault elements, featuring all-new Bonus Materials and presented totally uncut & uncensored for the first time ever in America!

1 out of 5 stars Not what it seems........2007-06-09

The box is the only good thing about this movie. The title has nothing to do with the plot of the movie. When you expect one kind of plot and get a completly different plot makes the movie suck big time.

1 out of 5 stars DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY! IT'S 'NOT' .......2007-05-21

Other reviewers are correct. If you're thinking that this is the original cult classic, "The Story of O", it isn't! And 'far' from it! Wish I would have known this before I purchased it!

Despite the cover image appearing to be that of the original, and [...]

And despite the original being a French made movie, unless you can understand Spanish, be perpared to 'read' this movie instead of watching it! That's right, it's all in 'Spanish', with optional English subtitles!

[...]

5 out of 5 stars One of Franco's finest of the 80s.......2007-05-19

Superbly photographed and supremely erotic with a shocking finale. Excellent dvd from Severin looks amazing and features a customarily colorful interview with the legendary director.

2 out of 5 stars Don't Be Fooled!!.......2007-05-14

If you're looking for a film adaptation of the novel "The Story of O", you won't get it here.

What you'll get is a fairly boring soft core movie with a bit of badly done kink at the end. It's also subtitled... including very useful translations of "Ah! Ah! Ah!".

If you're looking for "The Story of O", buy the 1975 version or try to track down a copy of the 1992 "The Story of O, the Series". Don't waste your money on this one.

5 out of 5 stars The Gospel Road.......2007-03-10

Our church showed this movie in the mid '70's. Several years ago I was able to 'win' a copy (VHS) on e-bay. When the DVD came out I HAD to have one. Wonder when or if they will re-release the "soundtrack" on CD? I have it on vinyl. (NO record player now)

5 out of 5 stars The Gospel Road.......2007-02-18

Johnny Cash takes the truth of Christ's life and death and makes a very sensitive and touching movie that is bound to draw people to the person, Jesus Christ, the only thing that makes sense in this sad and lonely world.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent film.......2007-01-09

The film is very moving and can be given an excellent for the story. As it was filmed in the 1970's the pictures are a little wierd compared to what we used to seeing in today's cinema but the film is still a good one.

4 out of 5 stars Surreal Johnny Cash Art Flick Twist to the Jesus Story..........2006-11-25

This is one strange dramatization of the story of Jesus as narrated by Johnny Cash in his down home, ever cool style, walking along the Galilee or perched atop a high cliff, Bible in hand. Two prominent themes of this Cash version are (1) that Jesus died for all people of all time (especially brought home in the startling crucifixion scene), and (2) that Jesus' journey was very solitary--even when he was amidst crowds. There are very few actors in the film, and even crowd scenes, such as Jesus entering Jerusalem on the donkey, sometimes have no people at all, though they may have a mob of voices heard but not seen.

Those who are sticklers to Biblical chronology and precision, probably would not like this movie, since it employs quite a bit of artistic license and some doubtful interpretations or statements. Also, the movie is weak as an evangelistic film, as it emphasizes the nice, inoffensive pitiable side of Jesus, his healing ministry, love for children, and so on, and largely (but not entirely) skips over sin, need of repentance, repeated confrontation with the Jewish religious leaders, and so on.

Except for brief words from John the Baptist, only Mary Magdalene, played by June Cash, southern accent and all, has a speaking part. The bright blond hair and blue eyes of Jesus are striking, but as the movie obviously doesn't attempt to give a realistic interpretation, those physical qualities only made Jesus stand out in an even more other worldly way apart from his dark-haired disciples, again heightening his separateness, uniqueness. The movie's pace is very laid back, with many scenes of the Sea of Galilee, naked Judean hills (again the aloneness motif), Jordan River, or Galilean hills. The country music adds a nice touch as does Cash's friendly voice.

Because of its uniquenes and artistic liberties, I'm hesitant to recommend it for everyone, but I liked it, if only for the poignant crucifixion scene.

5 out of 5 stars The Gospel Road by Johnny Cash.......2006-11-11

I'm happy this old brilliant movie is available on DVD now. I don't know how many times I watched it yars ago with my youth groupes, and we had chilles every time because it's a gospel narration so touching and profound, and I haven't seen a Jesus character portrayed so close to human reality in another gospel movie. Thanks for this DVD edition.

This animated feature-length life of Jesus boasts a stellar pedigree. Originally a BBC: Wales production, it showcases the voices of some of Britain's finest actors in any medium: Ralph Fiennes as a brooding and humble Jesus, Miranda Richardson as Mary Magdalene, Richard E. Grant as John the Baptist, and David Thewlis as Judas. The lovely, flute-heavy score is by Oscar winner Anne Dudley (The Full Monty). And clearly a lot of expense has gone into the Claymation-like animation. But while it's hard to find fault with the rendering of this familiar story--it's respectful and definitely done, you might say, by the Book--it would have been nice if there had been a tad more joy, if it walked a bit lighter in its sandals. As it is, all the characters seem consistently subdued, whether they're expressing angst, rage, terror, or bliss--none of which is helped by the figures' blank-eyed stares (if animators are becoming ever more sophisticated, why can't they get rid of those creepy Charlie McCarthy gazes once and for all?). Still, the weight of having such formidable actors play these familiar roles lends the production a certain credibility, and parents looking for good religious videos that won't insult their kids' intelligence will be thrilled. --Anne Hurley

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Presentation of the Gospel for Young Children.......2007-05-18

I watched this with my 4-yr old daughter and was thrilled by the way it presents the gospel, and she loved it too. It opens up a new way to discuss the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. The script and characters are impacting to adults too...it is definitely for the entire family.

The clay animation is well done and not amateur at all. I could not have been more pleased with this dvd.

5 out of 5 stars Good movie........2007-05-13

This has been a wonderful addition to our Sunday morning Bible time. My son is 11 and has autism, my daughter is 7 (does not have autism). They both enjoy this dvd. It helps them understand more of the bible on their terms. They don't even realize that they are "learning" anything, except that we talk about the movie when it's done. They really like the characters. We find it perfect for the ages of our children.

5 out of 5 stars The best claymation yet!.......2007-05-04

I can watch this movie over and over and not get tired of it. It tells the beautiful story of Jesus and his last days here. I couldn't believe they showed this one on television! Wonderful movie and worth buying!

5 out of 5 stars More Than the Perfect Kids' Film.......2007-05-01

I watched this to find out if it would be a good film for kids to see about the life of Christ. (My favorite was and still is the 1977 mini-series, JESUS OF NAZARETH--still a powerhouse of A-list acting and a triumph of storytelling).

THE MIRACLE MAKER - THE STORY OF JESUS is not just terrific for kids to watch as an introduction to the Gospel, but it's also a visually compelling version of the greatest story ever told for any age. I only wished that the filmmakers had the time and money to commit every scene to claymation (some parables and flashbacks are shown as cell animation).

The familiar voices such as Ralph Fiennes (as Jesus), Julie Christie and David Thewlis definitely lifts this presentation above kids' fare, that's for sure.

Amazon says this DVD is currently unavailable. I hope that's a temporary status since this would make a great holiday gift for any kid. Or grown up.

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Experience.......2007-04-03

One of the best told presentations of the Story of Christ.Masterfully orchestrated by the Animators,Actors,Directors,Scenic Artists, and the whole team at FFILMIAU S4C Films. The stop motion animation and figures are so realistic you will think they are human.Amazing work by EVERYONE who worked on this film. The BEST!

This is a good movie to share with your friends and family. My favorite is still the Gospel of John. With that said, this is still a good movie to get.

5 out of 5 stars Best Jesus movie ever!.......2006-10-21

If there is any Jesus movie that touches the hearts of men, this one does. I bought three of these and play them so much, I want to make sure I have it a long time. The fact that the words are taken entirely from the Bible, and portraying the life of Jesus simply and accurately without added "Hollywood" glamor, tinsel and big-name movie stars distracting the meaningful intentions of this story: that of our Lord and Savior here in the flesh over 2,000 years ago.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Film .......2005-08-29

I they were selling this movie at my church when a special guest came one Sunday. I bought this movie and I have to agree that this is the best movie I have ever seen on the life, death and resurrection of my Lord Jesus Christ. I haven't seen "the Passion" yet, I plan to very soon and I have high hopes for the film, but this one is equally as good.

Very well done film that was done with great care, excellent movie I recommmend everyone see

5 out of 5 stars a powerful film for missionaries.......2005-04-27

Taking five years to research and produce, this 1979 film is meticulous in its recreation of the time of Jesus. It uses over 200 locations in the Holy Land, many actors from the region, and is based on portions of the Gospel of Luke.
This is the film used by over 1,500 denominations and missions to evangelize, and it has been translated into 877 languages and shown to over five billion people in 228 countries, and is an excellent "tool" for this purpose, because it is simple and at the same time very powerful and moving.

British actor Brian Deacon is a wonderful Jesus, with a soft but manly voice and perfect enunciation, making the words of Jesus come to life in a very special way.
Others of note are Niko Nitai as Simon Peter, Rivka Neuman as Mary, Talia Shapira as Mary Magdalene, and the part of John the Baptist (played by Eli Cohen) is short, but physically the closest I have seen on film to what I imagine the real John looked like.
Richard Kiley narrates as Luke, and also listed as narrator is Alexander Scourby.
Directed by John Kirsh and Peter Sykes, it has some terrific passages; one of my favorites is the storm at sea (Luke 8:22-25), which is very effective, and the cinematography by Mike Reed, and the locations, a pleasure to watch.

The film ends with an invitation to salvation, and with it the promise of "a full, abundant life, filled with purpose and meaning", and with a quote from Revelation 3:20: "Behold, I stand at the door and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him".
Total running time is 83 minutes.

5 out of 5 stars The most widely viewed film of all time.......2004-04-30

It is impossible to overestimate the important of this 1979 film, for it has made an impact in even the most primitive regions of the earth, places where men and women are only now hearing about Jesus for the first time. This definitive, rigorously scriptural movie version of the life of Jesus Christ has been seen by over five billion people around the globe, reaching 236 different nations in over 800 languages. It has helped win innumerable souls to Christ all over the world, and even now, under the aegis of Campus Crusade For Christ, local churches and individuals are coming together in an effort to send a free copy of the movie to every home in the United States. The movie was a dream over three decades in the making, with five years of pre-production work preceding the seven-month filming that took place in 1978 at a multitude of sites in Israel. Intense efforts, involving the collaboration of numerous scholars from the whole gamut of Christian churches, went into making Jesus as accurate as it could possibly be - from vintage pottery to historically accurate costuming to sufficient cinders residing behind burning torches, every effort was made to take the audience back to Jesus' time. It is a non-denominational Christian film; while some churches might quibble about an omission here or a suggestion there, this movie is the story of Jesus and not the story of any particular kind of Christian religion.

The movie is based solely on the Gospel of Luke, and the dialogue you hear is taken straight out of the Bible. Jesus says nothing in this film that He does not say in Luke's account of his life. Naturally, every facet of Jesus' life could not be covered here, but the movie does a superb job of showing us who Jesus was and how He lived, taught, suffered, and died for the sins of all humanity. Brian Deacon does a superb job playing Jesus, and Niko Nitai truly shines in his portrayal of Simon Peter. At times, the film does seem to jump from one scene to another rather quickly, but this goes back to the authenticity upon which the film was founded. In a sense, Jesus' ministry was spent walking toward Jerusalem and His death on the cross, so we see Jesus and his disciples walking almost continuously; furthermore, Jesus' teachings, as recorded in Luke's Gospel, are a collection of parables and religious instruction originating from many different events in the life of the Savior. Jesus took His message to the people instead of letting the people come to Him.

The suffering of Jesus is handled quite well here, clearly portraying the horrific nature of death by crucifixion without making it disturbing enough to scare young children. You do see the scourging of Jesus and the driving of the nails into his wrists and feet, but the director seemed to set just the right tone for the scenes. It all makes for a powerful film that has won innumerable souls across the world; to tell someone of Jesus is one thing, but to show that person in such a captivating format as film exactly who Jesus was and how He suffered and died for the sins of humanity makes for a powerful missionary tool. Even non-Christians will be impressed by the commitment, scrupulous attention to detail, and cinematic mastery that went into the making of this film.

2 out of 5 stars Each child is different.......2006-07-11

I would like to have seen a greater focus on Jesus, not the children. It was a little fragmenting in the opening scenes having the children each recall bits and pieces about Jesus .... you didn't know who the main character was! There were angels speaking to Mary, a baby, a temple scene, a Baptism, etc. all within a couple of minutes....

I guess that is the problem of narrating a story through the eyes of someone else, and not letting the Scriptures speak straight to you. You have to go through the 'filter' of that character; and are forever limited to seeing things from their point of view (or how the narrator portrays them). But that is a more general point about the 'narrative'.

I think movies etc. are good but especially for the younger child, who can't read; but the younger they are the more they need a movie that simply tells the story of Jesus; and does so slowly and simply, focusing upon Jesus from start to finish...For that reason the movie that just puts the Bible into pictures (as far as possible) is to be preferred- especially for the very little ones... but I recognise each child is different

I think they will get bored if the scenes change so quickly they loose the thread, not because it takes two minutes to show the wonder of say the birth; a flash back taking 10 seconds or whatever is rushing the story. i.e. I don't think much is gained by making a short version. Children love to stop and wonder where adults pass over in familarity. It is all new to them... enjoy it, dramatise the wonder... don't rush it!

I'll be going back to the original 'Jesus' movie first!... and seeing if that better meets my expectations of a film that conveys the story of Jesus in a memorable visual way to in my case young children. The ficticious characters seemed to get in the way.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Introduction into Christ's life.......2006-02-25

I purchased the video, the "Story of Jesus for Children" for my 4 year old son. We've watched the video several times and each time, he's had more questions. It's been a great catalyst into Jesus's life and I know this video will help expand his knowledge and curiosity of Christ. I love that the story is told through children. This video has been a nice purchase for our family.

5 out of 5 stars Children Meet Jesus.......2005-07-12

This is a great movie for families. The story is seen and told through the eyes of children. They tell the story of Jesus with their own words and feelings. See them walk, talk, and live stuggling with their new faith and the betrayal and crucifixion of Jesus. Remember this is made for children. It delivers the Christian message without the harsh adult images found in other movies.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic Film Remade for Kids.......2002-08-15

Once upon a time, 1979 to be exact, a film on the life of Jesus was released to theatres. Called, simply, "Jesus" it had been filmed on location in the Holy Land with input from hundreds of biblical scholars and with a script that very closely followed the Gospel of Luke. Today, this film holds the distinction of being the most viewed film of all time, having been translated into 758 languages with an estimated audience of over 4 billion and over 34 million video tapes, DVDs and VCDs of the film in circulation.

With that background, let's look at the "Jesus for Children" edition of the film. In one sense, this film departs from the premise of the original- to present an accurate portrayal of the story of Jesus as found in the Gospel of Luke with little embellishment. Instead of the straight scriptural story, this is the story of five children (Benjamin, Caleb, Sarah, Joel, Leah and Nathan) living in Jerusalem during the time of Jesus' ministry. They have been hearing strange stories about the man that some call a prophet and some call crazy, and they argue among themselves as to what is the truth. They follow Jesus from place to place, reporting on the miracles he is performing and the stories about him that people are telling.

All of the footage of the interactions between the children is new and footage from the original "Jesus" film is used in two ways- some stories are treated as flashbacks of happenings in Jesus' life (such as his baptism) with narration from the children, while in other cases footage of the children is woven into scenes from the original film. Combining footage filmed nearly 20 years apart is bound to be a challenge, but it is done masterfully and the additional shots of the young actors fit in perfectly- it doesn't appear out of place or forced.

I have enjoyed the original Jesus film through many viewings and it's still my favorite film portrayal of Jesus. My children have also sat through it more than once. However, the new version for children has many benefits. First of all, it's shorter- at 62 minutes, it's easier for the kids to digest. Another benefit is that the narration and interaction between the children go far in explaining situations and events that might otherwise be missed in the larger film (such as the conflict between Jesus and the Jewish leaders). Finally, the brutality of the scourging and crucifixion of Jesus are presented in a more kid-friendly manner.

It's a well-done addition to the "Jesus Film" legacy, effectively using the existing material in a manner that is entertaining, informative and engaging for both kids and adults. This isn't a "dumbed-down" story for the kiddies, but rather a sensitive retelling of Jesus' story that works hard to put it into a framework that children can understand and more easily relate to.

Highly recommended.

Incidently, the DVD version is region 0 and will play in any NTSC DVD player worldwide and includes both English and Spanish soundtracks. The video is also available in VHS here on Amazon, as is the original Jesus movie in VHS and DVD.
