Description

This stirring drama is based on the internationally best-selling autobiography by renowned poet Sylvia Plath. It is the story of a gifted young poet, Esther Greenwood, whose inner genius has trapped her in a private world of terror. Like author Plath, a suicide victim at the height of her career, Esther can't seem to harmonize all the harsh realities of her life with her own perfectionist thinking. From college, through early job hunting and singles life in New York, we see Esther and her friends coping with the pressures of school, sexual relationships and drugs, until each reaches the final path for their adult lives.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible.......2007-06-08

I've been looking for this title on video/DVD for more than a decade, and was very surprised to suddenly see it listed here at Amazon. Unfortunately, upon placing the disc in my player, my anticipation turned to extreme disappointment.

This "digitally remastered" DVD looks like it was transferred to the medium from a really old, faded and probably moldy VHS tape. The image is blurry, and the colors are washed out. The sound is quite tinny, as well.

Under no circumstances should you consider buying this title. It's practically unwatchable, and would be a waste of money.

1 out of 5 stars Really bad video quality.......2007-05-29

Another reviewer has also said it, the video quality is truly bad, and makes the DVD nearly unwatchable. If you have not seen the film before, you will miss a great deal simply because of the poor video, the story will be very hard to follow.

1 out of 5 stars Great Movie, bad DVD.......2006-07-15

I loved the book "The Bell Jar" and the movie would have been great as well, but the DVD was one of the worst transfers I've ever seen. The DVD looked like a vhs tape that had been played well beyond its usefull life. Some of the images were so unclear that you couldn't see facial expressions. Please realese a transfer that isn't one big blur.

5 out of 5 stars Not Exactly Faithful to the Book---But Very Moving.......2005-11-13

There are three reasons to see this very moving, if not book-faithful adaptation:

1) Julie Harris

2) Marilyn Hassett

3) Because you love 70's Films about Mental Institutions ("I Never Promised You a Rose Garden" and "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" to name but two).

1 out of 5 stars If you loved the book..........2005-10-07

...spare yourself this movie. I was so excited when I found out there was a movie, that I tracked down the VHS online. It was *really* disappointing. The acting was bland to bad, and it had almost none of the feel that made the book so enjoyable. The movie "Girl, Interrupted", while also a flawed translation, is a much better purchase if you're interested in this genre.

    4 out of 5 stars How Wude!!!.......2003-12-11

After finding most of the Star Wars parody/mockumentary shorts that've come out over the last several years somewhat dumb, and inconsistently amusing at best, I wasn't expectin' much when I gave the "F True Hollywood Story: JarJar Binks" a rent. The only reason I even threw it a glance as I walked by it at the local video rental joint was that it focused on the man, the myth-- nay, the LEGEND-- that accomplished the nigh-impossible feat of surpassing the Ewoks as the lamest Star Wars character EVER conceived! And since I found nothing else of interest to rent (somebody'd beaten me to the only copy of 'Leonard Part 6' that day), I decided to go against my prejudice regarding Star Wars parody shorts and took a chance. Anything that takes shots at one of sci-fi's most-hated aliens can't be TOO lame, right? And I love watching those E! True Hollywood Story shows that this production satirizes, so at least I'd be familiar with the format. You know, a brief look at the star's not-so-stellar childhood, followed by a few early projects (like performing standup routines in France, and co-starring in a movie with a mime who does wrong things to an inflatable alien doll), his quick rise to stardom and eventual downfall into a morass of drugs, depression, and alcohol, and ending with him either: (a) overcoming his addictions, or (b) ending up dead (I'll not reveal which way JarJar goes here; find out for yourself you lazy sot!).

After viewing this twelve-minute-long look into Jared Binkelstein's (heh) "real-life" rise and fall, I found myself pleasantly surprised; there were more than a few truly funny moments in this spoof! I mean, how could I NOT get a good guffaw over a rather, er, "swishy" Darth Maul? How could I NOT utter a light chuckle after viewing the familiar silhouettes of a couple of 'anonymous' interviewees? How could I NOT drop a few yuks after witnessing the poking fun at get-a-lifer Star Wars ubergeeks who camped out in front of the local multiplex for weeks on end in order to be among the first to watch Episode I? Then there was the biggest laugh of all when George Lucas (well, actually it wasn't REALLY George Lucas, but a reasonable facsimile) stated that "as a filmmaker, I'm all about stories, not special effects"! Heh, GOOD one, George...

But now you're probably sayin' to yourself, "Well I'm glad it's funny and all... but is a 12-minute-long feature worth shellin' out the shekels they're askin' for this thing?" Well, if this platter had JUST the short, no it wouldn't. But thanks to the inclusion of...

    - Three commentary tracks, including a quasi-hidden 'easter egg' track featuring a pompous Eurotrash-sounding sort doling out flowery missives regarding the misunderstood genius of Binks' works. The other two are a bit more informative; the first one is the feature's writer and producer givin' ya all the tech-specs regarding the production of each scene, throwin' in a few amusing anecdotes here 'n' there to keep the viewer from slippin' too deeply into a coma. The secondary track, however, might actually put'cha right BACK into that coma-it features the director discussing this "effort in guerrilla filmmaking" in a low, hushed tone that's kinda relaxing, yet disturbing at the same time. Also featured hereis a couch-side chat with the aforementioned "George W. Lucas", who goes on a twelve-minute-long, seemingly nonstop ramble about the Star Wars flicks, the childhood memories that inspired some of the characters, and his response to the charges of racial stereotypes being portrayed in Eppie I. This particular track has some pretty amusing bits, and is accompanied by various stills of "George" that continually rotate as he just goes on and on and on...and ON... (hee hee... "Kiss my Wookiee"...)

    - Plenty of deleted scenes and outtakes, parts of which I found just as amusing-- if not MORE amusing-- than the stuff they decided to NOT cut out of the short! The best stuff includes Darth Maul hammin' it up with his preacher and Cheech Marin schticks as well as more, er, "fluffy" hijinks. You might also get a kick-- or get sick-- out of the outtake featuring the man of the hour doing a very wrong thing to "George" (Scandalous!). Also thrown in is an alternate ending that's a take-off of the last scene in Return of the Jedi, guest-starring Elvis and Jesus Christ. Uh-huh! Oh yeah, "Jack Nicholson" also chimes in with his fondest memories of the Binkster whilst practicing putts at a country club somewhere.

    - A selection of production pics & notes. Kinda boring, but worth looking at with the fast-forward turned on.

    - A couple not-all-that-well-hidden 'Easter Eggs', including the aforementioned commentary track, two satirical articles from the Landover Baptist Church newsletter that decry the immorality of two particular JarJar Binks toys, and a screenplay for 'The St. Nick Project'. I'd go into further detail about the latter feature, but I think you can get the gist of what it's all about by its title. And if you don't... well, you might wanna go outside more often. Kinda like what I should be doin', now that I think about it...

Anyway, thanks to the inclusion of all the aforementioned tchochkes, I'd say that, at the most, it'd be worth a relative buying it for you as a Christmas or birthday gift. Otherwise, I suggest you try to find a local rental place that has it, and check it out. Although I enjoyed it, the "F True Hollywood Story: JarJar Binks" DVD is not something I'd consider a "keeper" for my collection. If I felt inclined to watch it more than once every couple'a years, then it'd be a different story. But as it is, I'm more than happy to give it a rent every once in a blue moon...

Genady Lerner (Michael Degen), a Jew and the patriarch of a relatively large extended family, watches with profoundly mixed emotions as the Russian army retreats from the Ukrainian city under intense bombardment from the advancing Nazi army. Skeptical of the rumors abounding regarding the Nazis' extermination of the Jewish race, Genady opts to remain at the family home. Meanwhile, Genady's longtime neighbor Lena Onofrienko (Katrin Sass) decides that assisting the invading army may be in her best interests, in spite of her friendship with the Lerners. Soon, both families are caught up in what became one of the largest Nazi atrocities of World War II, in which 35,000 Ukrainian Jews were slaughtered and incinerated over a period of two days in the nearby ravine called Babij Jar. Description

Not too long ago, makeup was regarded as unsophisticated and striving at best, immoral and unrespectable at worst. Today, American women (and men) buy beauty products at the rate of $39 billion dollars a year. BEAUTY IN A JAR explores the social, racial, sexual and political history of the American beauty culture. How was the American ideal of beauty transformed over time? How does advertising tap into women's fantasies and hidden desires? Trace the birth of our beauty culture and examines the changing ideals of the past century--from white complexion and rosy cheeks to flappers; from the lipstick craze to the natural look; from black is beautiful to glam-rock. Along the way we'll meet the figures behind many of these fashion shifts, people like Elizabeth Arden, Madame C.J. Walker, Helena Rubenstein, Max Factor, Estee Lauder, and Charles Revson. Authoritative and far-reaching, BEAUTY IN A JAR includes interviews with industry insiders like former model and current executive Iman, Naomi Wolf, the author of The Beauty Myth, Helen Gurley Brown of Cosmopolitan, and many more.

        5 out of 5 stars The Jar.......2006-08-28

An excellent, excellent film. It deserves every award it won and then some. Would you like to know how to learn about life in Iran? Give someone like Ebrahim Foruzesh a camera and turn him loose. This apparently simple story tells us so much about what's really happening there. The adult roles were mostly played by actors. I found the new teacher, and the female characters, particularly impressive. This film is set in a school where grades 1 through 5 all learn in the same room from the same guy, and the kids weren't actors at all. Just kids. The result is pure cinematic magic.

From my perspective, I saw a few things that reminded me so much of China that I had to laugh. A few more than make me grateful I don't understand most of what people say about me and that I don't teach in Iran. Oh yeah, and that my students are (*cough cough*) adults.

Fantastic use of natural scenery, by the way. Lots of desert and not a whole lot of contrast in colors. Foruzesh is a master, and I plan to keep an eye on him. I'll also watch THE JAR a few more times.

3 out of 5 stars Right Up There.......2001-05-26

The Killing Jar turned out to be a neat little "B" movie, complete with just the right amount of excitement, good acting, and suspense. It had me wondering all the way to the end. Lots of gore, if you are turned off by such things, but just right for me. The only flaw that I noticed is that at the end, they left some strings untied, such as did a couple of the guys who were very badly wounded actually die, or not. Otherwise, I enjoyed it, and I'm glad that I purchased it. My kind of flick!

        5 out of 5 stars A Surprisingly Good Thriller!.......2000-03-06

I saw this movie the other day on cable and thought it was done really well. The opening scenes with the flashbacks were great, and the music was errie. The performances were pretty good as well. It definitely kept my attention until the very end. I thought I knew who the killer was, but as in all good thrillers, I was wrong. I'm glad I could purchase this movie from AMAZON, a surprisingly good thriller that I'm glad I own!

4 out of 5 stars Errie, Suspense, Thriller.......1999-10-27

The Killing Jar is a B-Budget movie with a very good story line. The Scenes are run smoothly, and details in the story are tightly used to tell the story. Great performances by the Leads, and in particular Tamlyn Tomita, who's character didn't have to be asian to fill this role. Often, when asian characters are in the story it's because the story calls for it. Her character could have been played by anyone, and that is good for an Asian actress to be able to play parts outside of being Asian
