Product Description

Do you learn better by watching rather than reading? Here is a chance to see how to transport your baby from screaming into serenity...in minutes. Watch as, step-by-step, Dr. Karp teaches new parent how to switch on their baby's powerful calming reflex. English and Spanish In "The Happiest Baby" Dr. Karp reveals a treasure sought by new parents for centuries... the "calming reflex" (the automatic "off-switch? for any baby?s crying). No wonder thousands of Los Angeles parents, from working moms to superstars like Madonna and Michelle Pfeiffer have turned to Dr. Karp to learn his secrets for making babies happy. Elisabeth Bing author and co-founder of Lamaze International "The Happiest Baby on the Block is fun, fascinating and convincing. I highly recommend it to all new parents." (Running time - 38 minutes.) The DVD also contains 3 bonus chapters: 1) Dr. Karp answers 25 questions from parents about calming babies and helping them sleep. 2) A Spanish dubbed audio track of the entire 38 minute teaching video. 3) Three tracks of calming white-noise sound that is an extraordinary mix of womb sounds and a newly designed pulsation that babies love (even though it sounds a little odd to the ears of an adult) Each track can be played individually, played in sequence or repeated for hours to gently guide your baby into a deep level of relaxation. This video is designed in NTSC not PAL or SECAM. It is meant for use in most countries in the Western Hemisphere as well as Japan, South Korea, Greenland, Guam, Samoa, and the Philippines.

5 out of 5 stars A true sanity saver!.......2007-07-08

This DVD was the best "baby care reference" that my husband and I came across. If you have a difficult baby...this really gives some great ideas to help calm him/her. You have to be willing to give it an honest try: the swaddling HAS to be tight around the arms and we went as loud as a vacuum cleaner in the same room with the baby (this trick worked every time to get her to sleep). I know it may not work for everyone 100% of the time, but it sure saved our sanity. And now that our daughter is 18 months, when she is so upset that she can't calm herself down, the vacuum cleaner still seems to do the trick! I would recommend this to any pregnant mom/couple - and it's important for all caretakers to be on board.

5 out of 5 stars Best "new baby" gift.......2007-07-07

This is my favorite gift to give at baby showers. It's the gift that has the least amount of "cuteness" factor at a baby shower, but guaranteed, it's the gift that new parents will appreciate the most after the baby is born! Who needs a gazillion cute bibs and baby outfits when what you really NEED as a new parent is your sanity? Dr. Karp is a sanity-saver for those first three months of babyhood!

5 out of 5 stars Great video!.......2007-07-05

This is an essential video for all new parents. We watched it when our daughter was about a month and a half old. She was a pretty easy baby, but it was such a relief to have new strategies for how to calm and comfort her during her "difficult" time - from 5 to 7PM. The techniques are easy and they work right away. She is almost 13 months old now and we still use the calming "shhh" to help her fall asleep sometimes. I gave away my original video and I just bought this one for another friend. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars BUT IT NOW.......2007-07-04

This is the most wonderful dvd ever for new moms! They should make every new parent watch this before leaving the hospital. My baby responded immediatly at 5 weeks of age. I was growing weak with frustration-the only way I could get my baby to stop crying and/or sleep was to breast feed him...even if I knew he just had a complete feeding...this dvd is a God Send!

I used these principals on my third baby! I sure wish I had known about this dvd when my other 2 children were infants!

5 out of 5 stars Every Parent Needs this Video!.......2007-07-04

My husband and I are first time parents. We have been around small children all our lives and know what to expect from toddlerhood. We were just overwhelmed with what to do for a newborn, especially the first three months. This video taught us how to settle down our baby. Our pediatrician told us not to bind the baby's arms while he sleeps but, our infant will not sleep unless he is tightly swaddled. This video enforces that, teaches you how to swaddle right and helps you understand the needs of your newborn for the first few months. I know so many people pregnant this year and have purchased this for them as well. One friend walked their baby to sleep each night and after seeing this video and swaddling him along with the other techniques the video gives, they too get sleep and no longer have to walk him to sleep.

For months 2 through 11 - we'd pop one of this bad boys into my laptop, crank it up at dinner time - and actually were able to sit for 25 minutes. A godsend.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent product.......2007-06-13

People keep stating this product is an illegal copy. Well I tell you, I can Not tell this is a copy in anyway. Each DVD has a high quality color picture on top which is flawless; the image in not shifted or lifted in anyway. The box also has high quality color pictures all over and is also flawless; again no lifting of the edges or misalignments. There is even a little magnet imbedded in the box to keep the lid closed. The only questionable aspects are the price, the lack of product inserts, and the DVD sleeves are on the cheaper side. If this product is a reproduction, I am impressed.

I haven't played all the DVD's yet, but I assume they are complete versions.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Collection!.......2007-06-05

My kids love them! Why pay more if you can have the exact same dvd for so much less?? It is not worth buying them individualy for ($10 each?)... instead you can pay $3 each!!! So much better. They are the originals! Great collection for babies to toddlers! You can choose the language you want (English, Spanish or French)!! GREAT, GREAT, GREAT!!

5 out of 5 stars Could not be happier.......2007-05-23

I got this set a couple of days ago and I could not be happier. Each DVD is protected in their own sleeve and all the DVDs are in a nice looking box. If you love Baby Einstein this is the set to get.

5 out of 5 stars Best Baby Einstein deal out there!!.......2007-05-23

Whether or not these DVDs are bootlegged is irrelevant to me. Mine actually arrived with 23 DVDs, and each one is exactly the same in appearance and content as the ones you can buy individually for $15 each! You don't get the case for each, which probably includes a description and an age recommedation, so you just have to pop them in the player to see what you are getting. Or I have found other reviews out there with that info if you really need it. But with my little girl, age recommendations aren't that important anyway. She just watches whichever ones are interesting to her that day.

I would recommend this product to anyone. It's definitely the best deal on Baby Einstein that you will find anywhere!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-07-03

I'm a new mom of four days and I purchased this DVD for myself 3 weeks ago after hearing a little about it from a friend. Boy am I impressed! The information given is very simple and easy to follow. I was instantly able to recognize Mason's different cries and take appropriate action. Otherwise I would probably be tearing my hair out trying to figure out that he needed to eat yet again after just finishing a meal. Worth every penny and then some.

5 out of 5 stars This DVD Rocks!.......2007-06-20

I bought this DVD for my best friend Kelly who just had her first baby and she has said "thank you" about a million times. Her husband, who was skeptical, has become a big fan too. She said it took listening and watching the DVD just a few times and now she knows exactly what her new baby girl needs with every cry. Why didn't this come out sooner? I'm looking forward to having this DVD for my first baby soon!

4 out of 5 stars Unique explanation of different cries.......2007-06-11

Having bought this hasn't changed my life but it has definately given me a different perspective to my daughter's different cries. For the most part I am able to tell what she wants but it is still sometimes difficult to distinguish between the cries -even after reviewing the DVD. It is a great DVD and aside from distinguishing what the cries mean, Dunstan does a wonderful job offering different techniques to help solve what is bothering your baby - from different burping methods to various feeding positions. This is very helpful and overall I do recommend the DVD!

5 out of 5 stars Not just for parents.......2007-06-07

I bought this as a gift for my sister before her first baby but I have found it also helps me with my babysitting duties. I don't have kids of my own and was worried that my lack of experience might mean that I didn't feel confident enough to play a large part in this baby's life. Thanks to this I don't feel like I am getting it all wrong. I would recommend the system not only to new mothers but to extended family as well.

3 out of 5 stars Pricey for what you get - In any language........2007-06-05

I saw a TV broadcast and thought, "Gotta have it." My wife and I just had our first, so I thought it would be a good idea. It seems to be useful so far, and Dunstan is good at what she does. However,I was rather disappointed to find a combined content total (lessons 1&2) of barely 30 minutes (on two DVD's! wasteful), covering only five 'words'.
These 15 minute lessons are followed by extensive praise in the form of testimonials, so called 'Bonus Features'. These run longer than the lessons. I don't understand, if I'm at home watching the DVD I've already bought the item, so why sell it to me?

The content is quality - the item is 20% overpriced.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great to watch, even for parents!.......2007-07-07

This is an excellent introduction to using sign language to communicate with your baby. It is so entertaining that my 14 month old son can sit still and watch a lot at a time. And what is more, its not obnoxious, so you as a parent will delightfully watch and learn in tandem with your child.

2 out of 5 stars Baby Einstein - My First Signs.......2007-06-28

It is impressive how my son, now 15 months, gets completely absorbed with all the Baby Einstein products my wife and I have previously purchased (My First Moves, Neighborhood Animals, Baby Beethoven, Baby Mozart). With this one, though (which by the way said was precisely for children in that age range), his attention was only captured for the first 5 minutes. Analyzing it from a non-target customer standpoint, I think it is not in the same category as the other ones I've seen, quality wise. Maybe my expectations were too high but I can honestly say I was a little disappointed with this product. Maybe someone can recommend other BE products that are as good as the others. Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful!.......2007-06-22

My 6 month old loves to watch this video. He hasn't started using any signs yet, but i believe it is never too early to start learning. He sits in his high chair and will watch the whole video. The video is designed well to teach vocabulary and signing, and there is great, peaceful music throughout. I hope Baby Einstein comes out with a new signing video soon so we can use it to learn more signs.

5 out of 5 stars Great for 18 mo. old boy.......2007-06-03

We had every single Baby Einstein video except for this one and Baby Wordsworth. I ordered both of them and they keep my son (18mo) occupied for the whole entire video. He needs "new" videos every 3 months or so. I hope they create more videos for 18-24mo.

5 out of 5 stars My First Signs, Just Terrific.......2007-06-03

Baby Einstein is a wonderful new line of videos to help aid in your child's development. Get them off to a very good start with these videos, and this special one, My First Signs. Get them well on the way to a successful future now! Don't wait!

Little Einsteins is an exciting, educational program created by Disney and Baby Einstein that combines animation, real-life photography, and famous music and artwork with instantly likeable characters who have a passion for music and adventure. In this DVD prelude to the Playhouse Disney series (premier October 2005), Leo, June, Quincy, Annie, and Rocket set out to help a little caterpillar find the musical tree of many colors so that it can become a beautiful butterfly. The journey proves complex, but the ever-cheerful group uses their musical knowledge, careful listening skills, and ingenuity to ensure success. Beethoven's famous Ninth Symphony is featured extensively throughout the 61-minute program and viewers ages 3 to 7 are encouraged to sing and clap along as they learn about rhythm, melody, musical terms and careful listening skills. Viewers also delve, quite literally, into the artwork of masters that include Van Gogh and Monet, visit American cities and wildernesses, and get a first-hand look at the amazing butterfly migration down the East Coast of the United States to Mexico. DVD Bonus features include a "Navajo Maze Game" that tests listening skills; "DisneyPedia," a more in-depth look at Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, the cities visited in the program, and the annual butterfly migration; and "Backstage Disney: Meet the Team" with more information about the show's main characters. --Tami Horiuchi

Our two year old son LOVED Baby Einstein DVD's and now we have introduced Little Einsteins and we are so impressed! The music of the day, art of the day and the use of musical instruments and musical terminology is fantastic. Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars We're going on a trip in our favorite rocket ship..........2007-03-27

Wow! is all that I can say about this entire series!!!! I have an 8 month old who will sit and watch this show over and over again if I let her. It amazes me that this show is actually fun and educational and even as an adult I enjoy to watch it unlike some other shows for babies that put both me and my daughter to sleep. I am pleased and highly recommend this any parent...

5 out of 5 stars I CANNOT BELIEVE IT!!!!.......2007-03-15

This tape has been a lifesaver on more than one occassion. My boys LOVE Einsteins. Not to mention how much they learn from them. They move and jump and dance and sing...This is the next best thing to Sesame Street.
My son even has a rocket that he does EVERYTHING with - we are lucky if we can wash it.
It also helps children imagine and learn...(oops now I sound like a playhouse disney commercial) :-)

5 out of 5 stars A big adventure whetts the appitite of our little einstein.......2007-02-08

Our 2-year old daughter loved Baby Einstein and this dvd was plugged on those. We loved the fact it featured famous works of art and classical music in a contemporary way. Martha loves it and often fishes it out of the dvd crate for us to put on for her. The interactive part of the disc is a great hit with her.

A hit with little ones and grown up ones in our house at least.

4 out of 5 stars It gets their attention but you might need earplugs.......2007-02-08

I originally bought this for my youngest child, but it seems to be a hit with all the kids. I have to say I am sick of repetition of the few notes played over and over from Beethoven's 9th, but the kids like it and they'll probably never forget it. I give it 4 stars because of the annoyance factor.

It was a wonderful educational movie!! I really enjoyed it. Thankyou very much!!!

4 out of 5 stars From an Expecting Family.......2007-06-08

We were amazed with this video, and it was neat for us to watch how our little child is growing and changing. Our only dislike is the references to evolution, but we highly recommend this video.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Images and VERY Imformative.......2007-06-02

This DVD is great for first time moms who are curious about what's going on inside her body and what the different stages are that your baby goes through from conception to birth. The images are incredible, even if most of it is done by computers. It looks so real that I didn't realize that some images were even computer generated! It's National Geographic so it's very informative and educational but it keeps your attention.

Five of Mario Bava's best films are included in this box set, minus his forays into eroticism, like Blood and Black Lace. Still, the lines between sexual pathos and violence blur in these selections that influenced not only other famed directors of Giallo, such as Dario Argento and Lucio Fulci, but also spawned the American golden age in horror, led by directors such as John Carpenter. Three black and white films here exemplify Bava's trademark use of chiaroscuro mixed with suspense-building cinematography first developed in early horror classics like Nosferatu and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. In the Hitchcock-inspired Evil Eye (1963), tourist Nora Davis (Leticia Roman) witnesses a murder but can't convince police of the crime. Kill Baby Kill! (1966) is the prototype for all little girl-ghost films. Dr. Paul Eswai (Giacomo Rossi-Stuart) is recruited to solve the mystery of Villa Graps, where Baroness Graps (Giana Vivaldi) reanimates her dead daughter, Melissa, by killing innocent villagers. In Black Sunday (1960), the witch Princess Asa Vajda comes back from the dead to inhabit her look-alike, Katia, both played by Barbara Steele, the original femme fatale to which all brunette vamps, like Soledad Miranda (Vampyros Lesbos) and Elvira, are indebted.

In Technicolor, Bava's fantastically rainbow-lit films underpin the director's fascination with connections between our world and those imagined. Black Sabbath (1963) is a trilogy hosted by Boris Karloff, who also stars as a Russian vampire in its segment, "The Wurdalak." "The Telephone," and "The Drop of Water," in which a nurse, Helen Correy (Jacqueline Pierreux), steals a ring then fears that her dead medium patient seeks revenge, are acute studies of guilt and paranoia. The Viking saga, Knives of the Avenger (1966), like Bava's Hercules in the Haunted World, spawned several sword and sorcery films, while protagonist Rurik's (Cameron Mitchell's) knife-throwing is indeed entertaining. Screened back to back, these films provide evidence of Bava's influence in the horror genre. Moreover, they reveal Bava's deep understanding of horror's many facets, whether sexually, psychologically, or physically based. —Trinie Dalton

Description

More than a quarter of a century after his death, director Mario Bava remains one of international cinema's most controversial icons. Today his influence — marked by stunning visuals, daring sexuality and shocking violence — can still be seen in the works of Martin Scorsese, David Lynch, Tim Burton, Dario Argento and countless others in a legacy that extends far beyond the horror genre. This collection brings together 5 landmark movies from the first half of Bava's career — encompassing the original giallo, a bold Viking epic, and his three gothic horror masterpieces — featuring new transfers, original European versions, and exclusive featurettes to create the definitive celebration of one of the most important filmmakers of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Finally..........2007-06-23

Kill Baby Kill is a flic choc full of foreboding atmosphere that can only be appreciated in the original wide-screen aspect. Contrary to Amazon's misleading information, this version IS widescreen with the option to view in Italian w/subtitles. The dubbed version is there for those who dislike subtitles. I paid 19.99 for an earlier crappy edition so needless to say I find this collection offered at 19.99 to be a gift from Amazon. Clear colors and sound make this DVD a joy to watch; great nostalgic fun. I can't wait to view the other titles, also in original theatric aspect, a bonus for me. Am I in Horror Heaven? (I bought an extra set as a present for a relative; no borrowing, please.)

5 out of 5 stars great collection.......2007-04-10

Sorry, but giving this set a bad rating just because the AIP-versions aren't included is stupid in my opinion.
This box includes 5 fantastic movies by Bava (yes, even "Knives Of The Avenger" is a great one) in overall amazing quality with very good bonus features. I believe there is a good reason that AB didn't include the different cuts of "The Girl Who Knew Too Much" and "3 Faces Of Fear": legal issues. If these are solved, hopefully we see these versions someday on DVD (though the only one that really interests me is "The Evil Eye". "Black Sabbath" would just be nice because of Karloff's own dubbing,
but everything else is clearly inferior to the italian version.)
Until then - enjoy what's IN this box, it is an amazing value for the cheap price. Of course many people who want to buy this, already may have different DVDs of some of the movies in there - so everyone must decide for themselves if it is worth getting.

3 out of 5 stars Bittersweet Box Set.......2007-04-09

It's great to have all of these Mario Bava titles in one set. The transfers are really beautiful, and a revelation to those of us with memories of grainy 16mm TV prints. "Black Sunday's" monochrome atmosphere looks particularly lush in this set. "Kill Baby Kill" is a major upgrade to the crummy, desaturated DVD I have from Image.
But they really SHOULD have included BOTH US and Italian versions of the star attraction, "Black Sabbbath". Or at least cut in Karloff's actual voice to the Italian version! Why not re-edit the way it should be? I still rushed out to buy this set, but cannot give it five stars due to the pre-release publicity which stated BOTH Black Sabbath versions would be in the box set. Anchor Bay owes all of us an apology or a free DVD of the English version.

This is not what I was promised in the add.
I will never buy anything "Anchor Bay" again!!!

4 out of 5 stars Very Pleased Overall.......2007-04-06

I'll echo what a previous reviewer wrote concerning the absence of the American International versions of "Mask of Satan" ("Black Sunday"), and "Three Faces of Fear" ("Black Sabbath"). I had fully anticipated their inclusion in this set. After watching the trailer, I know I'm going to need the AIP release "Black Sunday." What really sold me on this set was the opportunity to finally see and own the international edit of "Black Sabbath," and I was frankly unprepared for the vivid clarity of this transfer, and that of "Kill, Baby...Kill." It's great to finally have these films the way they were meant to be seen (however I'm not a fan of English or any other subtitles; English dubs would have been nice).

I haven't gotten around to watching "Knives of the Avenger" or "The Evil Eye," so I can't really weigh in on them. I've been generally pleased with the extras on these discs, the one caveat being the inclusion of the same trailers on each disc. Couldn't they have expanded this selection? As with so many other movie box sets in my collection, the package art's bizarre! Additionally, a decipherable illustration or two of Mario Bava would have been a fitting homage.

On VHS I have the AIP version of "Black Sabbath," and really enjoy it, but seeing this uncut Italian dub I can understand now why this was Bava's favorite film. It's very evident that AIP really went wild in the editing room--it's much more interesting in its original form. Having an educational commentary was also a selling point in my decision to shell out for this; honestly, I don't regret buying this set and I haven't even seen the whole thing yet. If you've been curious about the works of Mario Bava, and you don't mind the subtitles, you won't see finer transfers for his three best films (BLACK SABBATH, BLACK SUNDAY, AND KILL BABY KILL) included here.

However, having said all that, I have to put in a plug for the production of an edition of "Kill Baby Kill" with its killer new WS transfer, but in English and with Tim Lucas' commentary accompanying it. Another highly worthy title of Bava's deserving a more respectable issue is "Planet of the Vampires." When these two finally get the treatment they deserve, a large void will have been filled.

Hasta, and May the Force be With you!

Danny Kaye spoofs Robin Hood and Scaramouche in this inventive slapstick swashbuckler. Portraying the clownish but good-hearted entertainer Hawkins, he infiltrates the court of the corrupt Basil Rathbone (up to his usual brand of cruel villainy) disguised as the legendary king of jesters, Giacomo. After a court sorceress hypnotizes Hawkins into believing he is also a legendary assassin, Hawkins has more identities than he can keep straight, and Kaye zips back and forth between them at, literally, a snap of the fingers. Comic highlights include a wonderful sword fight with Rathbone in which he constantly switches identities, and the classic "chalice from the palace/vessel with pestle" wordplay as Hawkins plays "hide the poison" and forgets where it is. With comely Glynis Johns as his spy-in-arms love interest, Angela Lansbury as the scheming princess, and Mildred Natwick as the dotty spellcaster, this is Danny Kaye at his comic best. --Sean Axmaker

Absolutely one of Danny Kaye's best. I laughed so hard that there were tears. Truly an enjoyable movie. I just don't think they make them like this anymore.

5 out of 5 stars Court Jester.......2007-06-11

Danny Kaye's ultimate best film. It is funny, romantic and empathic. He wants to be a hero type, but ends up hiding the baby King from the bad guy. He is enchanted by a court witch who convinces him he is a true hero with the snap of anyone's fingers. The most memorable line is "Get it? Got it? Good" -- Danny did his own sword fight, but the villian was in reality a great sword fighter and would not fight Danny when he was goofing off. --- A MUST SEE MOVIE

5 out of 5 stars Prep for Engineering Final Exam.......2007-04-29

In 1958 I had to take an exam in Engineering Drawing from 2-5pm on a friday. I wanted to take my mind off of the exam in the morning so I went to the theatre to catch a matinee. It was the "Court Jester". It was the funniest movie I ever saw, and while taking the exam, the proctor was forced to move me into an adjacent room as I couldn't stop chuckling during the exam. I "aced" the test and was forever grateful to Danny Kay, Glynnis Johns (who was beautiful), Basil Rathbone ( the great) and Angela Lansbury who I forever after had a difficulty in seeing her in later films as a sweet lovable old lady.

5 out of 5 stars Danny Kaye is the best!.......2007-04-10

This movie is just as great as I remember it from when I was a little kid!
My mom and I, every Saturday would watch old movies on tv, and my favorites were always Danny Kaye movies, this one is by far my favorite!
Danny plays the best part as the jester, his style is like no other!

I recommend this movie to anyone who wants a lighthearted laugh!

5 out of 5 stars The Court Jester.......2007-03-28

Danny Kaye is brilliant in this movie. His "Vessel with the Pessle" routine is one of the best. Danny Kaye is at his best. The midgets in the
movie offset his humor.

John Waters's goofy, 1990 comedy about a Baltimore girl (Amy Locane) who can't decide if she should remain "good" in her 1954 world or hang out with the motorcycle boys is funny in a scene-by-scene way, but doesn't quite gel into the grand piece the director was hoping for. The cast is exceptionally likable, however, including Johnny Depp as an Elvis type and Iggy Pop as a chattering loony. The best material is set in a fringe world of bikers and losers on the outskirts of town, and Waters writes some hilarious sardonic dialogue for the characters. Cry-Baby is the last of Waters's more undisciplined features; he followed it with the glossier but no less perverse Serial Mom. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars What more do you need?.......2007-06-17

Being written and directed by John Waters and Johnny Depp not playing a gay drunken pirate is all this movie needs to be good. Add the fact that Cry Baby is an original version of the cliched movies that have the same plot as Grease. John Waters is a modern day critic of American society and his movies add comedy to the criticism. All his movies are classics and Cry Baby is no different.

The DVD features Commetary by John Waters, deleted scenes, and "It Came From Baltimore" which is a behind the scenes Featurette. The price is good the movie is great, what is stopping you from buying this?

5 out of 5 stars Brillant.......2007-06-13

Great movie. Really Enjoyable. Got my 15 year old cousin to watch it and she loved it. Great cast.

4 out of 5 stars John Waters Best Movie! A Must Have For all Rockabilly's and Squares!.......2007-06-01

This movie holds a special place for me. The fact that my grandpa in the 50's lived in Baltimore and he was a Drape! That man had alot of wild stories. Drapes as John Waters talks about was a gang in Maryland and term used for juvenile delinquints. Suffice to say I often wonder if John and my grandpa ever crossed paths. In fact the character Crybaby is alot like my grandpa he was white trash, he'd been to juvie, he rode a motorcycle, had a leather jacket and a greasy ducktail. He used to swipe cars and get into fights. He also was a musician with band called Rich Rocket and the Automobiles. It was a Rockabilly band he did a song called "Shaking my Dice" a euphemism for you know what, after watching a film warning about the solo act him and his buddies came up with this song as a joke. My Grandpa said they did a 45, the flip was a cover of Jerry Lee Lewis' "Great Balls of Fire" they pressed copies only for the band and after he died I looked all through the attic to find it to no avail I was pretty pissed and sad. His stories and bravado made me want to be a Drape and Rockabilly greaser.
Your probably wondering what this has to do with the movie. Alot, when I was a kid me and my grandpa watched this movie in theatres. He snuck me past my parents who wouldn't let me ever set eyes on a John Waters film. I had a good time and so did my grandpa. He thought the movie vulgar and little stupid because he had become a born again Christian but overall I saw that gleam in his eyes and he said it brought back memories. This movie is hilarious and some of the music in this film is really hokey and corny. The Rockabilly stuff is pretty good since Rockabilly veterans Dave Alvin and James Intveld worked on those numbers. Its pretty surreal and crazy overall it is a mind trip and a delightful one. My grandpa if he was alive would recommend this movie. The DVD has interviews with John Waters, the cast and crew. Waters talks in length about the real Drapes which I found interesting and there is commentary. Some of the musical numbers could've been done a little better, but all in all as my grandfather said after leaving the theater with a smile on his face: "Swell, pretty swell."

3 out of 5 stars can't recommend a purchase.......2007-05-24

Even though Cry Baby is an above-average comedy movie, the thing is, more often than not the storyline is more *silly* than it is actually funny. Johnny Depp's character was pretty good, but he wasn't as much of a bad guy or rebel as you'd believe. Just because he goes around driving a motorcycle and taking a few punches in the face doesn't mean he's a believable bad guy. His character was lacking in that area, in my opinion.

I also felt that the grandmother of his girlfriend (the GOOD girl who sings happy 50's-style rock tunes, instead of the more loud and outrageous Elvis Presley-like rockers intended for the troublemakers) wasn't entirely in character for the majority of the film. I mean, she tried so hard to flat out HATE teenagers who rebel against their parents to the point where she actually stood up to a crowd and mentions how she will not be brought down by them. But then, a short time later when Depp showed up to her granddaughter's musical thing in a motorcycle, for some reason the grandmother forgot that she was supposed to strongly dislike teens who rebel and didn't mind at all that her granddaughter opted to drive away with Depp. Strange.

The musical parts were okay, but most of them were 50's style rockers. You know how the music sounds. No need to elaborate on that.

A pretty decent movie with a few flaws in the way. Pick up some of Depp's other superior movies, such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or Secret Window.

4 out of 5 stars "You got it baby, you got it raw.".......2007-05-24

Cry-Baby is a hilarious, campy musical that pokes fun at some classic musicals. The movie takes place in Baltimore and is named after its main character Wade Walker (Johnny Depp) who is nicknamed Cry-Baby because of the single tear he's able to shed at will. This unique ability and his devilish good looks drive the ladies wild. He even has Cry-Baby tattooed on his arm under Depp's real Cherokee chief head tattoo and scripted across the back of his leather jacket.

Cry-Baby is a drape, a leather wearing, motor cycling bad boy who hangs with a bunch of other drapes made of up of his pregnant sister Pepper (Ricki Lake), Hatchet-Face girl (Kim McGuire), Wanda Woodward (Traci Lords), and Milton Hackett (Darren E. Burrows); all delinquents in their own right.

One day one of the "square" girls takes notice of Cry-Baby. Allison (Amy Locane) decides she doesn't want to be so good anymore and encourages Cry-Baby's advances. Cry-Baby crashes a square party and takes Allison for a ride on his bike back to the drapes hang-out where his troupe gives her a makeover reminiscent of Sandy in Grease. They sing a duet together and there's a memorable make out scene with everyone wet French-kissing. Cry-Baby teaches Allison the basics of how to French Kiss ("Kiss Me, kiss me hard") which was both sexy and pee your pants funny. Everyone is interrupted when Allison's jilted boyfriend and his gaggle of goons pay a visit and set Cry-Baby's motorcycle on fire. A fight breaks out, the police show up and Cry-Baby is arrested and sent to a detention center until he's 21. There are some songbirds singing in jail reminiscent of Elvis Presley's Jailhouse Rock but perhaps less choreographed. But bars, conniving girls and angry mothers can't separate Cry-Baby from his true love for long.

Acting wise it is really hard to judge. Everyone was over acting to make a point and these roles are really tongue-in-cheek. As far as I'm concerned this film proves Johnny Depp can do just about anything and still be sexy. Johnny already had a huge following with his success in 21 Jump Street. As for fat girl, Ricki Lake, this came after Babycakes and Hairspray which I think were better roles for her. It looks like she's sporting a pregnant breasts and tummy body suit for her role. I didn't notice any fat stereotypes. She already has two illegitimate kids and gets just as much make-out time as any of the other characters. Even the somewhat deformed Hatchet Face girl gets a lot of action. Special appearances by Willem Dafoe (Batman) as a mean guard and rock star Iggy Pop as Uncle Belvedere round off the cast.

Cry-Baby was written and directed by John Walters who is also the writer and director of the Hairspray musical. You really have to have an open mind for comedy to enjoy this film. I thought it was hilarious, going in with the perspective of not taking it seriously. There are a lot of great one-liners. Would it be on my favorite movie list? Probably not, but I'd watch it again and recommend seeing it at least once. Reviewed by M.E. Wood.

The beauty of this entry in the Baby Einstein catalog is its integration of puppets, toys, and live farm footage to help babies and toddlers make the connection between their plastic play sets and stuffed animals with images of a real farm. As always, the spoken language is minimal, omitting the pesky verbs and adjectives that would confuse the very young. The 30-minute main program is divided into sections: barns and equipment, animals, planting crops, and harvesting. Background music ranges from "Old MacDonald" to Schumann, and DVD extras include a 6-minute puppet show and visual "discovery cards" identifying animals and farm paraphernalia with a single word. 4 out of 5 stars My Granddaughter Loves This.......2007-06-27

I purchased this product because my 17 month old granddaughter loves animals. Though a child's attention span is usually short at this age, she is captivated by the varied ways this subject is displayed in this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Works every time!.......2007-06-09

We use this CD to get our son to play on his tummy. He loves the part where they sing Old McDonald. It works like a charm every time.

5 out of 5 stars Baby MacDonald.......2007-06-04

This is both of my boys favorite Baby Einstein! They love all the animals and the different plants that are grown on the farm. We would still be watching this if the older one hadn't scratched the DVD. This one is HIGHLY recommended by a 2 year old and a 3 year old.

5 out of 5 stars My Daughter Loves This Video.......2007-05-17

I don't know if boys like it better like some of the reviews mentioned, but my daughter loves it! She love all animals especially horses and cows. She also loves the puppets. When each animal comes on the screen, we repeat the animal name in english and spanish. She is 17 months old and can already say doggie, horse and cow in both languages. It was a very good buy for us!
