Admittedly, Rockabilly isn't for everyone, but even non-fans of the genre will find themselves hard-pressed to dislike the crazed dance-steps and guitar-licks of the flea-like Larry, and the beyond-her-years, provocative vocals of his sweet sister Lorrie.

Believe me, The Collins Kids are AMAZING -- they're cute little bundles of joy, sheer energy, electric fun, fun, fun. Whether you are watching old TV clips or simply listening to their infectious music, you can't help but notice that Lorrie and Larry have an indefinable *something* that makes you grin from ear-to-ear.

C'mon, everybody, snap your fingers and tap your feet! Check-out The Collins Kids and see for yourself!

This DVD is GREAT if you like good, 1950's rockabilly music.
Growing up, we used to sit in front of our 17-inch Black-and White TV set, and marvel at Larry and Lorrie Collins. If you like vintage rockabilly, this is a MUST-HAVE!!

Hefty price for a tiny piece of pop culture.......2005-09-27

Who were the Collins kids? They were a brother and sister duo who had fifteen minutes of fame back in 1957-58 when they started appearing on live tv doing covers of the new, fresh-out-of-the nursery music called rock and roll. The brother could slash away some pretty hot rock chords on guitar with feeling - he deserves some credit for instinctually understanding the new music and being able to play it convincingly at such a young age. His stage personnae was a bit annoying - a little too much grinning and "gee whiz!!" for my tastes. Think of Beaver Cleaver on speed doing an imitation of the Big Bopper. The sister was pretty and had the better vocals of the duo. Are they worth rediscovering? I don't think so. They never hit the charts. Their own compositions were merely competent. It was a novelty act rather than an act that really mattered to rock music. This is interesting if you are curious about early television kinescopes. A warning: the audio and video quality is poor. This is watchable but those used to the home theatre experience will find these difficult to watch. At one hour, thirty dollars seems like an excessive price. Hard core early rock fans will probably grab this one. But it is like charging a mint for an early American bandstand episode.

Lyrics of first song talk about putting a gun to your head. A child actually looks at the camera and puts his finger to his head (couldn't be more than 7 yrs old). Thank God I was watching it with my daughter. It is now out of our house!!!

Rock-A-Billy Classics !.......2003-08-13

This is a solid, vintage Tv music set, that shouldn't leave your DVD player !

Along with the Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent DVD's in this series, you will be mezmirized by the high caliber of music talent on these discs! I can't wait to get the other titles!

Let's give Bear Family EXTRA STARS for thinking up these series, and HOPE they come up with MORE titles for this series!

Who's next? Let's hope it's the Wanda Jackson, Carl Perkins, Jim Reeves and Patsy Cline appearances.

Larry & Lorrie Collins Caught On Film.......2003-07-02

Don't let the less-than-five-stars review fool you: if you're a fan of the Collins Kids, this comes highly recommended. For that matter, if you like old rockabilly, you'll probably get a kick out of this DVD.

That said, the disc does have its problems. It's advertised as being in color, but it's not. That doesn't come as a huge surprise, and I would have bought it regardless, but if it's in black & white, it should be advertised as such.

The biggest problem however, is repetition. "Chantilly Lace" isn't one of my favorite songs, yet there's four different versions of it here. If there was some variation it would be understandable ("Blues Medley" is played three times and there is a little difference in the renditions, so it's tolerable).

The sound and picture quality isn't the best, but that's to be expected from television circa 1958. Larry's high-pitched voice can be annoying for the uninitiated, although it would have been nice to hear him sing "Hot Rod". Lorrie, however, sounds great when she goes it alone on "Rock Boppin' Baby". Not only does she sound good, but she looks absolutely gorgeous! In fact, that's a huge plus for this disc; in spite of its flaws, Larry & Lorrie Collins were incredibly photogenic - their energy shines through on every performance.

It's a shame that there's no footage of Larry Collins and Joe Maphis (another Town Hall regular) performing "Hurricane". Although Joe Maphis is nowhere in sight in any of these clips, Merle Travis - one of the greatest country guitarists who ever lived - is plainly visible in almost all the clips... sitting idly by with a guitar in his lap. For all the praise I can heap on the Collins Kids, seeing Travis sitting back there doing nothing only creates a sense of dissapointment.

Nevertheless, it bears repeating: If you're a fan of Larry & Lorrie Collins, this DVD comes highly recommended.
