Fun Mexican teen movie.......2007-02-24

This movie was apparently very popular in Mexico and was part of a trilogy. The other two films are predictably named La Primera Noche and La Ultima Noche. It was a fun coming of age movie about 4 teen girls, each of whom has her own issues with family and sexuality. The actresses were good. One has gone on to add a pop music career to her telenovela acting.

Also, I am trying to learn Spanish and loved the fact that this DVD offered both English and Spanish subtitles, which is not a given with Mexican releases.

Mawkish in Extremis, But a Great Classic Nonetheless.......2005-02-14

The opening and closing scenes of this film must have seemed hopelessly sentimental, even in 1948. I could barely keep watching thru the first 20 minutes. If you can get past that, however, there is much to admire here. Gabriel Figueroa's noirish camerawork is truly haunting; images will stay with you long after the film is over. Outside the film's opening and closing scenes, the story avoids an excessively conventional narrative style, moving very slowly and calmly to a gentle climax. The insights into pueblo life may seem exaggerated (like the shooting of a boy for taking a pot of water), but I would bet many of those events derive from real life memories from Fernandez's childhood. There are still a few areas in Mexico to this day where life approaches that level of desperation; to say nothing of the state of affairs in the 1940s. Finally, Maria Felix gives a wonderful performance in the lead. In fact, all of the roles are performed at a level that was high by any standard of the day. In sum, this is a truly great Mexican film from its greatest ever filmmaker.

Regarding the DVD, the image quality is not exceptional but certainly never impairs a proper enjoyment of the film. There are no subtitles (neither English nor Spanish) and no extras worthy of note. Hurray that this has been released, especially at such a steal of a price!

Amusing 1943 Mexican Comedy; Awful DVD.......2005-12-02

This 1943 Mexican romantic comedy is a remake of a little-known 1936 Fox film titled Girls' Dormitory, starring French actress Simone Simon and Herbert Marshall. The Mexican version features crooner Emilio Tuero as a literature teacher at an all-girls boarding school (Marshall's role) and Puerto Rican Mapy Cortes as the young girl who falls for him (Simon's part). Katy Jurado (best known in the U.S. as Grace Kelly's Mexican rival in High Noon) has a small part as a bad girl. Given the musical backgrounds of the leads, the Mexican remake has many musical numbers, mainly showcasing Mapy Cortes (then at top star in Mexico). Its amusing, the leads are charismatic, and the supporting players are all good, but the film was rather clumsily made. The DVD edition is cheap, but, like most old Mexican films currently on DVD, the quality of image and sound is very bad (scratches, static, frames apparently missing) and there are no subtitles. Its still watchable, and unlikely to appear in another DVD edition anytime soon, but it gave me the impression that I was watching a bad VHS-to-DVD transfer.

Great movie.......2005-11-18

This movie is based on the same title novel by Jorge Ibarguengoitia. In the novel the name of the town was changed, the actual location was Guanajuato and the movie was filmed in this city. Great movie, I loved the casting and they mantained faithfullness to the original novel, although the ending was somewhat different. This is probably due to the novel itself having a different ending on the first and second editions.
I do recommend it if you like mexican cinema or ir you are a fan of Jorge Ibarguengoitia.
