5 out of 5 stars outstanding.......2007-06-20

If you are a PSB fan, as I have been since 1986, then this is a must have. I was at their concert in DC a month before this was filmed. A lot of their songs from Minimal are performed as well as such classics as "Heart", "It's a Sin", "West End Girls" and many more. Backed by Sylvia Mason James, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe give their fans what they ask for, good music and a good time.

5 out of 5 stars The Boys still got it........2007-06-20

This is the Pet Shop Boys on their Fundamental Tour in 2006 in Mexico. I saw them a couple months earlier in Minneapolis and it was the best concert I've ever been too. And I've seen Madonna in 2006 and 2004. Great songs, great performers, and I'm telling you - you should buy this if you are a fan of PSB..

Peter Gabriel: Growing Up Live presents the complete 2003 Milan concert from Peter Gabriel's tour based around the album Up, featuring 17 tracks across 134 minutes. Literally central to a memorable show is a revolving stage that sees Gabriel going for a cycle ride in an exuberant "Solsbury Hill," performing "Growing Up" inside a Zorb ball, and delivering a gravity-defying sky walk in "Downside Up" with daughter Melanie. Accompanied by regular sidemen David Rhodes (guitar) and Tony Levin (bass), Gabriel is joined by the legendary Blind Boys of Alabama for the spine-tingling "Sky Blue," throughout mixing recent tracks like the abrasive "Darkness" and "The Barry Williams Show" with established crowd pleasers such as "Red Rain," "In Your Eyes," and "Sledgehammer."

Gabriel may be less wired than before, but he commands the arena with effortless charm and charismatic presence, his voice retaining all its paradoxically fragile power. Presented in an understated blue light and shot in an unobtrusive, gimmick-free style, the concert begins and ends in virtual darkness with Gabriel alone at a keyboard; from the opening "Here Comes the Flood" to the final "Father, Son," Growing Up is rock theater of rare intimacy, emotion, and intelligence.

The DVD is presented with a flawless 16:9 anamorphically enhanced picture and three soundtracks: rich and clear stereo, excellent Dolby Digital 5.1 and even more precise and detailed DTS. The Story of Growing Up is polished nine-minute documentary in which Gabriel talks about his ideas for the tour and the presentation of some of the songs. Tony Levin's View (five minutes) sets the song "More Than This" to photos taken by the bass player. --Gary S. Dalkin

I could have picked it off the shelf myself, but didn't have to

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-04-12

After watching Still Growing Up and Secret World I think this is the best of the three in terms of the song list, production and performance. It is simply a joy to hear and watch. I've never seen PG live in person, but this DVD is a good way to experience it, especially if it's on a good surround system & screen.

5 out of 5 stars I enjoyed it........2007-02-20

This disc is not a "reference" quality disc by any means... the images are some what soft and although the music tracks are clean, perhaps it leans a tad too sanitized during post-production... However if you can overlook the technical aspirations of the dvd, you have yourself a very immersive show with great artistry and interesting visuals. Peter Gabriel is quite a thoughtful and engaging artist and it is readily apparent in this concert. I sat through the disc with the wife and we enjoyed it very much. If you like Peter, it is a disc worth acquiring for the collection.

1 out of 5 stars waste of time.......2007-01-24

Obviously the other reviewers have never been to a concert before. I have always been a fan of Peter Gabriel and i like his music but here he is in my opinion a pale glimmer of his former self. There was no energy and everybody looked like they were just going through the motions. Maybe all who wrote a review were captivated by the strange looking bald bass player
but i really am mystified as to the high marks on this one. This one just did'nt have the energy i've become acustomed to in a concert but was more like a tv studio production.

1 out of 5 stars Incorrect Region Code.......2007-01-10

I'm disappointed as this DVD is of Region Code 1, whereas my player (as logical in Finland!) can play only Region Code 2 DVDs. Region Codes are not mentioned at your web-site and when making the order/purchase.

Your return policy is also unclear. I see it unfair that I should pay for a postal charge, or any other compensation, when you send a product that I can not use with my DVD player.

Directed by one "Nathanial Hörnblowér" and shot by 50 fans, Awesome is the Beastie Boys live and direct. (The full title includes a four-letter word in its six-letter-plus-apostrophe incarnation.) The place is New York's Madison Square Garden. The date is October 9, 2004. The show begins with scratching from DJ Mix Master Mike as the amateur operators, armed with Hi-8 cameras, get busy--from the audience, at the concession stands, and even in the bathrooms. Subtitled "An Authorized Bootleg," Awesome features the tracksuit-sporting trio, Mike D, Adrock, and MCA, running through numbers from all six records. (Later, they bust out the pastel tuxes for a pro-shot suite of jazz-funk.) Selections include "Brass Monkey" (Licensed to Ill), "Shake Your Rump" (Paul's Boutique), "Pass the Mic" (Check Your Head), "Sure Shot" (Ill Communication), "Body Movin'" (Hello Nasty), and "Ch-Ch-Check It Out" (To the 5 Boroughs). On stage, they're joined by Keyboard Money Mark, percussionist Alfredo Ortiz, and Doug E. Fresh, "the world's greatest entertainer," who adds a little human beat-box to their rhymes. For viewers concerned about Blair Witch-style vertigo, rest assured that editor Neal Usatin has stitched the shaky footage together skillfully enough to stave it off. Almost as essential as their Criterion Collection Video Anthology, Awesome may be the world's most professional home movie. Nathanial Hörnblowér, incidentally, is the nom de film of MCA, AKA Adam Yauch. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

4 out of 5 stars Great concert, but a little bit lacking........2007-03-11

Lets start with the good: This is a very cool concert DVD. I love the whole feeling of it, it really feels like "an authorized bootleg" as the Boys have billed it to be. It shows them at their live best. There are some amazing performances on this disc.
Now on to the bad: Although the concept of letting the fans shoot it is very cool and enjoyable, the editing could have used some work. It jumps from shot to shot every few seconds. Also, there are too many weird effects thrown in that give it less of a feeling that you were there. Also, the setlist could have been better. The 3 instrumentals right in the middle of the concert seem to slow it down and make it tedious. They could have used those 3 songs to play some more of their hits, such as Fight For Your Right or Hey Ladies (which are strangely missing from this otherwise-complete setlist).
Overall: This is definetly worth a purchase.

1 out of 5 stars I won't pay for bootleg-quality footage.......2007-01-14

Glad I caught this garbage on VH1 before I shelled out any $$. Watching this jittery unprofessional video gave me nausea. Was it too much to ask that the ONLY good live video footage we may EVER have of this great band be of good quality? Guess not. I could never sit through this again - thanks for nothin 'boys.

5 out of 5 stars A great concert DVD.......2007-01-04

Filmed by a whole bunch of people in the audience it makes you feel like you were there - even in the bad seats. It's cool, one guy is sitting a couple rows away from Ben Stiller and gets him on camera. Fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars Fucking Awsome!!.......2006-12-04

This video is amazing so many angles edited into one action packed psychedelic comedy thats really like you were there but better and funny extras too!!

2 out of 5 stars Interesting idea, not the right group for it, tho........2006-10-31

I'll probably get hounded with unhelpfull votes for this, but I gotta be honest, this DVD doesnt live up to what's been said about it so far.

So they gave about 30 people in the crowed a camera to shoot the show, ok, interesting idea... if you're a die-hard Beastie Boys fan, which i'm not. The only 2 songs I did know from this band wernt even played on this show (no sleep till Brooklyn & Fight for your right to party)

If a band cant even preform there biggest hits on a DVD there claiming to be the biggest movie to ever be made thats going to be so unforgettable and legendary in 20 years time as a cult classic that will top the box office and leave E.T, Star Wars and Titanic for dead, then you'd expect theyd include the songs that actualy made them... but nope, just a bunch of tracks i hadnt heard from a couple of guys in dorky green and yellow track pants singing about god knows what and repating it 100 times.

OK, I admit, i dont like rap very much. But the whole thing of this being a superb DVD and something everyone must see is a joke. It's a combination of pro recording and amatuer, thats a mistake there, go one way or the other, dont claim people shot that amatuerish if you also have a pro crew working on it, too.

It wasnt anything speicial for me, i fell asleep before it ended. Hound me unhelpfull reviews if you want, but this video is strictly for Beastie Boys die-hard fans and people who can stand pop/rap of this kind only.

Amazon.com essential video

This smartly produced, intelligently written documentary strikes a satisfying balance between thoughtful analysis, personal history, and sheer musical pleasure for a portrait of the seminal California pop band that will prove equally compelling to both knowledgeable fans and casual listeners. In the audiovisual equivalent of a loaves-and-fishes miracle, The Beach Boys: Endless Harmony weaves 45 of the group's songs through extended interview segments with all the original members, key musicians involved in their career-defining recordings, and astute peers and industry observers. Evocative period footage, including archival film and early, no-budget promotional videos, only add to the impact, but the real achievement is the clarity and candor of this authorized project, which might easily have lapsed into callow myth-making and media spin control given the involvement of the surviving Beach Boys and their record label, Capitol, which is releasing both the documentary and a companion hits compilation.

Instead, these archetypal Southern Californians, who transmuted their experiences growing up in suburban Hawthorne into a potent teen iconography orbiting surfing, cars, and girls, tackle the underlying personal and cultural upheavals beneath their discography. The central, dysfunctional drama of the Wilson family--brothers Brian, Dennis, and Carl, the group's nucleus, and their manager-father, Murry--is addressed early on, and underlined with harrowing excerpts from session tapes capturing the hard-driving, abusive style of Wilson père. Composer and acknowledged group leader Brian Wilson, who long ago became a poster boy for "troubled genius," pop division, is likewise depicted without evasion or apology, as are the internal tensions between Wilson and other members including Wilson cousin Mike Love; it's a testament to the filmmakers' acuity and skill that Love depicts himself as a force of "positivity... and 'upbeatness'" that counterbalanced Brian's darker, more introverted style, then dismisses the elliptical poetry of Wilson's most artistically ambitious collaborations with Van Dyke Parks as lyrically opaque.

Originally aired on VH-1, Endless Harmony works as an apotheosis of the cable channel's Behind the Music concept, elevating the concept substantially and covering an enormous terrain in 105 minutes. For the Beach Boys fan, this will be an essential companion to their enduring music. --Sam Sutherland

5 out of 5 stars The Beach Boys- Endless Harmony.......2007-07-08

It was a gift for my husband. He said he was not knocked over by it. I watched it with him and I found some things out about the beach boys that I did not know. It was alright.

5 out of 5 stars Complex, and well done..........2007-02-28

The Beach Boys created wonderful music and on a whole, this documentary tells that story quite well. The Brian Wilson story in itself is an integral part of American music history, which now has an inspirational uplifting conclusion thats ongoing with his spirited reinvention of himself. The only parts of this DVD that are hard to stomach are those of Mike Love's inflated, obnoxious ego has he tries to convince the audience of his own self importance. But I guess he's just doing his thing. Sad really. What a contrast to the wonderfully humble, even naive musical genius of Brian. Still, Mike also played a balancing role in the band that made them exactly what they were: A great american band and the creators of a beautiful and totally original music.

5 out of 5 stars Knowing How the Beach Boys Started.......2006-08-10

I attended my first concert of the Beach Boys at Westbury Theatre in New York. I was truly impressed with the group's performance. A few days ago before attending another of their concert in Connetticut, I decided to buy the Endless Harmony DVD to see how they looked like in their younger years and to know more about the group so as to come to appreciate them even more. It was very satisfying to see a deeper perspective of their lives as I got insights into their personalities. I liked the Wilson brothers and I felt sorry for the tragic ending of Dennis and Carl, but it's Brian that I loved the most. I felt sympathy for him because of the dark side that tormented him in his life to the fact that he withdrew from others and lost his self-confidence. I am glad that he got to recover from his seclusion so as to be able to re-join the group and perform again before the world. He was just not only full of talent, but as a young man he had the most boyish handsome face. I liked the melancholic melody in the music he created which at other times had to be balanced by Michael Love by putting some fun into it.

Brian Wilson had left a lasting memory and legacy to the world and especially to the Americans for his genius music writing and arrangement. His music will live on even if younger singers may replace the original members, singing the same old songs (and new songs) in the years to come.

Knowing how the Beach Boys started as a group and how they became popular made me appreciate them as group not just now but more so as a group in the past. I recommend this DVD to old fans so they will have a significant addition to their collection, but I especially recommend it to new fans like me who though familiar with their songs, hardly had known them not just as a group but also as individuals with problems. This DVD contains their popular songs and at the same time documents their historical beginning and growth as a group, their ups downs and to mention specifically the respective tragedy that beset the two Wilson brothers.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensible!.......2006-07-05

This DVD is a real "must have" for any Brian Wilson or Beach Boys fan. Endless Harmony charts the group's history from their formation in the early sixties through to their effective end on February 6th 1998 when the late, great Carl Wilson passed away. It was a sad ending to a group that went on to make musical history over several decades and set the standards and success that many other bands strive to achieve today - this was without doubt one of the most influential rock and pop groups of all time. From the Worlds premier surfing band they went on to achieve the ultimate glory in pop music by producing what is probably the finest album ever made, the stunningly beautiful and critically acclaimed Pet Sounds. The eagerly awaited follow up album that never was, "SMiLE", dragged the legendary genius that is Brian Wilson into new depths of despair and the drink and drugs culture also saw the demise of fellow Beach Boy and brother Dennis Wilson. Brian Wilson did eventually come through his darkness to embark upon a solo career that in 2004 would see him perform the highly acclaimed "SMiLE" concerts to packed houses and rapturous reviews. This DVD follows the roller coaster ride that was The Beach Boys career with in-depth interviews from all the band members and other friends/musicians around at the same time such as Jackson Browne, Elvis Costello, Bee Gee Maurice Gibb and Eagles member Glen Frey. It also has some excellent "extras" that make this DVD great value for money. Buy it!

Description

The DVD A Life In Pop is an expanded version of the Channel 4 Pet Shop Boys documentary with a total running time of 140 minutes, including some amazing extra footage, like the duos first ever TV performance West End Girls filmed on a 1984 show called Hits des Clubs, What Have I done To Deserve This? recorded at the 1988 Brit Awards with Dusty Springfield, and also Pet Shop Boys' staggering 1994 Brit Award performance of Go West, where they dressed as miners and were joined onstage by two Welsh miner's choirs as a protest against pit closures. Also featured on the DVD are the videos for their singles: Miracles, I'm With Stupid, Minimal and Numb.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Completey informative and interesting.......2007-07-01

Watched it three times in the course of the first week I owned it. What can I say? We follow Neil and Chris through their childhoods, into the period when they met each other, and follow them through each album.
Inciteful and fun, we see the concepts behind each PSB release, including projects they did for other artists like Liza MInnelli and Dusty Springfield.
The film takes us right through their musical "Closer to heaven", the performance of "Battleship Potemkin", and their latest album "Fundamental"... right up to today basically!
Includes commentary by Liza Minnelli, Brandon Flowers of the Killers, Jake Shears of Scissor Sisters, Bruce Weber, and of course, a lengthy interview with both Boys.
Fabulous for any Petheads collection.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and sincere documentary.......2007-04-20

Usually I have no patience for documenaries but I enjoyed watching this one, maybe because the content is so relevant - the band, after all, is still making fantastic music. As if to prove that, the DVD bonus features include recent videos along some old rare TV perfomances.

The narration goes through candid interviews or rather edited monologues of Chris Lowe and Neil Tennant filmed together and separately (watch Lowe walking on the gloomy beach in his hometown, Tennant's silhouette as London is fading away in the twilight behind the window). It's quite intriguing to see them talk about the essence of their distinctive image, music and career nuances. The timeline is supported, throughout the film, by extracts of their videos and various TV footage. Plus, as usually, you have a little variety of guests: Brandon Flowers of The Killers, Robbie Williams, Jake Shears of the Scissor Sisters, Trevor Horn and others.

The only inconsistency I find is that after the Behaviour era the documentary speeds up its pace and Bilingual, Nighlife (especially) and Release periods are covered quite superficially.

In a way the DVD audiovisually duplicates 'Pet Shop Boys Catalogue', a massive book by Chris Heath.

5 out of 5 stars Trully Fantastic!!.......2007-03-19

Just to clear up the confusion, I ordered the UK PAL version and noticed that the sleeve omitted listing the Flamboyant video. However, when I played the disc, I was delighted to discover that Flamboyant was indeed on the DVD. Just order the UK version, and you will be fine.

4 out of 5 stars "Let them get a little closer, Neil". "Oh, no, Chris. Let's keep them guessing!!!".......2007-03-12

Every documentary the boys release just reach to feed the great wall of mistery around them.
Out of touch, they have achieved a star quality that reminds me of the legendary 40's and 50's stars.
What would I give to see them jumping into a pool, or chewing a sandwich, or getting drunk with friends...to see they're human and fallible...
I love their work and approach to music, culture and life in general terms, but as I grow older, I would appreciate if the quitted their impenetrability.

The DVD is great, interesting, wit, and their presence impeccable.
Fans won't learn much about them, but it's nice to have fresh news about the most intelligent, refined duo of our time. And, have you noticed how notorious their influence has becomed these days? Is it good they're getting related to Robbie and the old bitch (a.k.a. Madonna)? Not sure...

A magnificent DVD pairing for Beach Boys fans, these two stylistically different films here pretty much represent the two sides of "America's Band." First up is The Beach Boys: An American Band, made at the height of their Reagan-era resurgence after then Interior Secretary James Watt banned them from performing at the nation's capitol on the 4th of July. A colorful, upbeat film, it doesn't entirely gloss over the more downbeat aspects of the Beach Boys saga (parental abuse, mental illness, uncomfortably tight pants, loads of drugs, and Charles Manson), though it does go out of its way to give the story a happy ending, despite the recent death of drummer Dennis Wilson and the group's complete creative standstill. However, what it lacks in perspective, it more than makes up for in priceless footage, including Smile-era studio outtakes, the unreleased 1967 concert in Hawaii, numerous TV appearances, and extensive interview footage from the mid-'70s.

I Just Wasn't Made for These Times, on the other hand, goes more out of its way to show the long dark path of head Beach Boy Brian Wilson. While Wilson is now acknowledged as the Mozart of the late 20th century, director Don Was gives us a stark black-and-white portrait of a troubled artist still struggling to get his life back. His reminiscence of dad Murry Wilson's beatings is chilling, and Wilson is as comfortable as he'll ever be in front of the camera bragging up his drug use ("Cocaine... the works... put me in jail") and randomly quoting Arthur Koestler's Darkness at Noon. Through it all, Wilson comes across as a complete original, and if the reworkings of his classic songs don't quite match up to the originals, give the guy a break--he just wasn't made for these times. --Kristian St. Clair

4 out of 5 stars Good Beach Boy History.......2007-01-12

This was a truly interesting look at the Beach Boys. I enjoyed it very much.

5 out of 5 stars I'd recommend "Endless Harmony" and "Smile" instead........2006-09-28

AMERICAN BAND

Simply because I've seen "An American Band" and think its a bad way-in to the Beach Boys simply because their studio recordings are immortal yet this documentary stubbornly opts every time for the live version where the BB's slaughter the delicate arrangements they weren't allowed to play in the studio (Brian had studio musicians do the parts in the band's peak era (circa All Summer Long-Pet Sounds, 1966). Many Americans may know the BB's as a great touring band - but I see no evidence of it. Mike Love's camping it up on stage also isn't likely to endear this doco to newcomers. Also, the footage is grainey

I JUST WASN'T MADE FOR THESE TIMES (yet to see it, but I'm just saying Endless Harmony is a much more professionally done project with a bigger budjet, presents a more well-rounded portrait, instaed of just an onslaught of live BB murder.)

So my logic is that you shouldn't buy anything with "American Band" on it, and while you're going for "Endless Harmony" you may as well go for "Smile" as well, the DVD.

4 out of 5 stars not bad.......2005-09-10

i baught both of these on vhs, a pretty good find. I must say, I just wasn't made for these times was great. a very interesting look into brian's life. i just hate how most documentries completely disregard what happened in the 80s/early 90s in regards to brians life. i know there wasn't much, but i would have liked to see it all. but still that was great. now, for an american band, that was ok. it wasnt as good as ijwmftt but it had some interesting footage. most of when brian was in the bed was interesting, however, it did get a bit tedious to hear only a little beach boys history. i would have liked more, but i guess thats what "endless harmony" is for. so i would recommend getting both thoes films. you get the good documentry, then the videos and rare footage, then you get brian's story, the brains behind the band. together it all makes for a great package for your beach boys fan, or your beginner.

4 out of 5 stars Black and White.......2005-04-27

I think the beginning of all Beach Boys-ology begins with these two programs.

AN AMERICAN BAND

This gives you a good feel of the early and late phases of the band. Although it glosses over the 1970's and there is no mention of Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar (two black South Africans that appeared on Carl and The Passions, Holland, and the 73 Concert Album), this film gives you a baseline overview.

Yes, it is sanitized. But you don't expect them to mention in detail Denny's drug abuse and sex-cipades, and his connection to Charles Manson, now do you?

This films strength is the archival footage, pre-MTV videos, and the various concert variations on songs. I love the version of "In My Room," with the strings and the splitting room.

Admittedly, it is jerky and would stand for better editing. I'm thinking of the scene with Carl in the used car lot. Moreover, the changes from 1960's TV capture and the frosted video tape of 1985 can be hard on the eye.

But this is, after all, about the music and actually seeing they guys play. The Beatles had left-handed Paul as a counter point to Right-Handed John. The Beach Boys have a slat, with short Al, portly Carl, and Brian topping six feet. It makes for quite a visual presentation. Later, Mike Love would develop a type of eye-catching flashiness, even when rapping "Wipeout."

I JUST WASN'T MADE FOR THESE TIMES

This is Brian Wilson, in black and white-literally and metaphorically. Brian, who does not interview well, opens himself up to probing. And he responds. The commentary by Tom Petty is fascinating-I would have loved to see Billy Corgan's comments, too. But he wasn't famous at the time.

You see Brian as a family man-ex-wife Marilyn, daughters Wendy and pre-gastronomy Carnie, and Carl and Audrey. Thank goodness they got both mom and brother on camera before they died.

The weirdest piece of trivia comes from Audrey. She mentions that Murray would get angry and then retreat into his bedroom and have his secretary schedule things form his bed. Weird, but this puts the "lying in bed like Brian Wilson" question in a new light.

The remakes are nothing spectacular, but it is fun to see and hear Brian and his two daughters, plus Carl, sing. Almost like the Osmonds.

4 out of 5 stars Endless Disharmony.......2005-03-26

This set of two revealing perspectives on the Beach Boys has enough samples of their best music to be appealing to fans. It also uncovers glimpses of the inner turmoil that developed as Brian Wilson, their primary creative force, left touring and changed the focus of his talents from writing catchy tunes about surfing and girls to writing complex harmonic sequences with lyrics that told stories of lost innocence and finding one's soul.

The turning point came in 1966, when Wilson essentially replaced Mike Love with Van Dyke Parks as his primary lyricist collaborator after "Pet Sounds". After the resulting "Smile" project was abandoned due to internal strife, the Beach Boys minus Wilson re-invented themselves as primarily a nostalgia band, riding the crest of the wave that had formed under Brian's leadership, but whose new songs were weak imitations at best. Wilson himself never fully recovered from the demise of "Smile", although the recent successful reconstruction of this project has signified a partial recovery of his significant talents.

"An American Band" does its best to sugar-coat the conflicts, and has the look and feel of the "official story" of the band, like a 2 hour press conference in which the facts are sanitized. There are two pivotal moments in this video: one comes when squeaky-clean Bruce Johnston walks towards the camera looking like a televangelist, saying confidently with a straight face "We knew Brian was not going to be around [after "Smile"] but that we had to push on without him" (why?) The other highlight of the film is Brian's amazing solo performance of "Surf's Up" accompanying himself on the piano. "Surf's Up" expands the harmonic horizon beyond even "Good Vibrations", and is one of the most original, most beautiful, pop songs ever written. Brian's rendition is unintentionally heart-breaking; he is clearly exposing his fragile soul here on lyrics that are suggestive of innocence, a dark past, and a hope for redemption.

"Brian Wilson: I wasn't made for these times" is a biography of Brian Wilson, and is more detailed in its exploration of the Beach Boy turmoil. It is a little too long on talking heads, but also has good moments, including Brian's rendition of the story of "Good Vibrations" to eloquent tributes by Tom Petty and Linda Rondstat.

The other amazing revelation by watching these documentaries (especially if you watch them after you watch the Beatles Anthology) is the complete lack of character and wit displayed by the band members. Brian is the most interesting of the bunch, but his troubled past has rendered him humorless and incapable of displaying any evidence of wit. Carl looked like a nice guy, but again seems to take it all too seriously; Dennis played the part of a 1-dimensional sex toy, wound up and eventually wound down on substances; Al....can't think of anything to say about him... And Mike Love! He's just plain weird, will someone please tell him that he is not cool?

Buy this for the great music and for a fascinating glimpse into a famous dysfunctional band.

The Backstreet Boys, who made the mold from which everything from 'N Sync to 98 Degrees has sprung, remain one of the hottest acts appealing to the prepubescent and barely pubescent females of America and the world. This 16-song set, taped in the band's hometown of Orlando, features a mix of old and new tunes before the release of their Millennium album. Each of the five heartthrobs in the group gets his solo turn, and almost all of them do teardrop-stained, teeny-bop love songs calculated to up the shriek level in the arena. Given the elaborate choreography and stage show, the camera work on this concert is spotty. It misses much of the Boys' dancing, and indeed the larger picture the five Boys create onstage, in favor of endless shots of tiny screaming teens. --Marshall Fine

5 out of 5 stars Homecoming.......2006-08-21

Very well done, this collection of songs again has the boys moments to shine. THe concert isnt disappointing, and is in fact very well done for Brian to have been coming out of surgery not to long ago before it. A must have for every fan consisting of American girls favourites along with some song from the European albums.

It's entertaining, nostalgic, even poignant... not much more one could ask for from a Beach Boys concert. This 70-minute concert was the last time the complete group (brothers Brian, Carl and Dennis Wilson, Al Jardine, Mike Love, and Bruce Johnston, plus backing musicians) would appear in the U.K., performing a mix of oldies ("California Girls," "Help Me Rhonda," "Fun, Fun, Fun," etc.) and some newer material. And if the show itself is somewhat pedestrian, it's still marvelous to see the three Wilsons together onstage, especially in view of the subsequent deaths of Dennis (in '83) and Carl (in '98), and Brian's eventual triumphant recovery from mental and emotional problems. To hear Carl sing so beautifully on "God Only Knows," or Dennis play drums with such power and emotion, or Brian, vacant but game, contribute a few lines to "Surfer Girl"... well, it might just bring a tear to your eye. --Sam Graham

3 out of 5 stars Good DVD.......2007-04-11

I was kind of disappointed with this DVD; it has some good songs, but just a few. Most of them are not good.

4 out of 5 stars With a Little Help From The Studio.......2006-11-14

First off, nobody loves the Beach Boys more than I do. I grew up with thier music. As a musician, I owe a huge debt of gratitude to Brian Wilson for what he taught me about harmony. I've seen dozens of their shows, some awful, some incredible. And in 1983, a famous band I was in was their opening act for 3 weeks, so I got to hang with them and hear them every night. Live performances are generally never quite up to par with studio performances, and as a performing musician, producer, and engineer, I understand that. It's nearly impossible to achieve on stage amongst the roar of amplifiers and monitors what can be done in the studio where there is a totally controlled environment - and the ability to repair any mistakes. "Good Timin'" is indeed a live performance, but it has been enhanced or 'sweetened' back in the recording studio before being released. The backround harmonies have been supplemented by overdubs, if not all replaced completely. A trained ear will hear the double-tracking of parts - commonplace in any studio recording. It just makes everything sound "fatter". This is nothing new. The Eagles have done this on all their live recordings, as have Fleetwood Mac and plenty of other vocal groups. Some groups, like the Bee Gees, will even run pre-recorded tracks at their live shows to recreate the lush wall of voices that characterize their studio recordings. Personally, I like hearing the rough edges and rawness of a true live recording. The Beach Boys made the best harmony records of anybody, so we know they can sing. I don't mind hearing a missed part or flat note here & there. I wish they'd just mixed "Good Timin'" the way it was. The real beauty here is seeing The Boys all playing together for the very last time.

4 out of 5 stars Dennis Wilson is the reason to watch this...........2006-03-30

This dvd works on two levels- If you are a casual Beach Boys fan who wants to see some aging sellouts (Mike, Carl, Bruce and Al) jigging about to the hits of their youth, buy away- that is here. On the other hand Brian is here- in body and with a couple of brief vocal cameos, and some inaudible piano. And then, there's Dennis...he ties a sweaty towel round Mikes leg, sings a BEAUTIFUL, ragged version of you are so beautiful, makes help me rhonda rock with excellent piano and backing vocals, and generally has a total blast throughout...the only spontaneous thing about the whole affair. Brian was absent from the live Beach Boys from 64 onwards, even when he was onstage...Dennis was the only reason to see them live...it's a shame he doesn't streak here!

5 out of 5 stars Beach Boys at their Absolute Best.......2006-03-20

This disc has it all. Great songs. Great singing and it captures one of America's best bands in top form. I have to laugh at the review comparing the BBY's to aging hippies, obviously written by some 20 year old with a backward baseball cap on too tight. Get this disc and see what REAL music should sound like. These "aging hippies" could play and sing rings around almost anything out there today!

2 out of 5 stars way too old.......2005-11-03

these guys are way too old to be playing, i bought the dvd thinking it was in their younger years, they have no buisness playing, and all had beards wich made them look like old hippies!gross!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful story about real people.......2007-03-12

This was worth the wait, I enjoy Los Lonely Boys and have always enjoyed the fact that they are regular hard-working guys, with a God-Given talent to produce music.

4 out of 5 stars Los Lonely Boys - Cottonfields and Crossroads DVD.......2007-03-09

Great DVD of the Garza brothers growing up and become the amazing musicians that they are. It's not a "music video", its a documentary, and a very interesting one.

5 out of 5 stars Los Lonely Boys - Cottonfields and Crossroads.......2007-03-09

Great down to earth story of three young musicians and the influence from their Father supporting and encouraging the three brothers love and interest in music.
A very strong family bond, setting the foundation of love and respect for each other and their music.
The behind the scenes views on these three brothers is depedicated on this DVD is done very well.
Los Lonely Boys never forget their roots and where they came from and where it all started for them.
I would have liked to have seen more music performance as well as candid non-formal performance, but what is filmed on this DVD, is well represented of the brohters none the less. A must have if you're a Los Lonely Boys fan of their music.

5 out of 5 stars The rest of the success story of Los Lonely Boys.......2007-02-19

Well now, baby, I'm from Texas
And I just wanna let you know
'Bout the ways of life and livin' baby
On them Cottonfields and Crossroads

That's the first verse of Los Lonely Boys' song "Cottonfields and Crossroads". It is a blues song that talks about rural West Texas and the part of town that we don't always get to see.

In turn, that song title is applied to Hector Galan's documentary of the early part of Los Lonely Boys ascent from (very) young men backing their dad, to taking creative control themselves, to becoming an Austin, then national favorite.

And you know what? Mr. Galan takes us to that same part of town in those same rural West Texas towns to show the influences on los hermanos Garza.

Not in a sad or exploitational way, but as a means of setting the scene for the explosive arrival of Los Lonely Boys and Texican Rock and Roll.

For those of you not into long reviews, here's the summary. GO BUY THIS DVD.

What should you as the buyer know in advance? (Yes, I'm convinced you'll buy!)

This is a documentary, not a rock concert flick (although a couple of songs have been added for the DVD release). While several songs are included as backing to the flow of the movie, this is about the boys, their father and mother and families, and a few others who have an insight to offer along the way.

There's been some criticism leveled that the interviews are so tight that they constitute more of an advertisement than an explanation or expansion. Come on. There's not 10 years worth of celebrities and critics to line up and interview - but there are people who know the heart and soul of LLB available to talk to the camera. Advertisement? Lengthy press release? I don't see it that way, and no one else that I have spoken to about the film has seen it that way; in all fairness, I am an avid LLB fan.

As stated above, the documentary sets the stage for LLB's burst onto the music scene by going back in time in San Angelo to show what it was (and is) like in some ways and coming forward (both at beginning and end) to LLB playing for the home town crowd.

The movie's timeline stops before the band's meteoric rise to take the Grammy for "Heaven" - but all of the joy is present, as is the personal charm of the boys. Henry describing the definition of success will surely touch you.

And there's a fair amount of pain as well as the family splits so that Dad's dream can be followed. One thing we don't get to see is the effect of all those miles and all those shows on the boy's individual families, which is a shame only in that the wives and children have also helped pay for LLB's success.

So, reader and potential purchaser, let me again offer that this DVD deserves a place in your collection.

If you are a fan anyway - as are the more than 14,000 members of the LLB Street Team - maybe you've already got a copy, and if not, go get it!

If you only have radio exposure to LLB by way of "Heaven", I recommend you pick up a copy of the DVD and see the backstory up close and very personal.

I can think of any number of places where this film would also be very, very valuable in the classroom - whether music or history class.

Where to find the DVD? Here at Amazon and a couple of other outlets. Order Texican Style, the music DVD of a huge show here in Austin while you are at it.

Where to find LLB on the road? Go see the schedule at [...], and take my strongest recommendation to see a live LLB show.

And as for LLB themselves?

Still funny, thoughtful, down to earth guys, earning a living to support their families doing something that they truly love to do.

Still very much the home town San Angelo boys...but you knew that, cuz they told us so...

Yes some day I'm gonna go back, baby
And I'm gonna live on my own
But you can only find us baby
On them cottonfields and crossroads

God bless...

5 out of 5 stars It's not just about the music..........2007-02-19

On the West Texas cap rock, where winter winds howl and summer winds blister, an amazing metamorphosis took place. From hard pan clay and the hard scrabble life of three brothers, Henry, Jojo and Ringo Garza, emerged the fresh, vibrant sound known as Texican rock-n-roll. Director Hector Galan captures this evolution in his heartwarming documentary, "Cottonfields and Crossroads".

La familia es todo becomes the underlying pulse of the film. Father-and-son conflicts, father-and-son dreams fill the screen with the gamut of human emotion. Picking cotton or picking guitar were Enrique Garza's sons' choices in the poor, rural area. Watching Galan's excellent depiction of the family's trials and triumphs puts you IN the Garza shoes and lets you walk a mile.

It's not just music; it's not just trying to stay alive. It's not just faith. It's an electricity that flows through Henry's eloquent guitar riffs, Jojo's amazing bass and Ringo's powerful drums. It's a unity that crowns tight harmony. It's brotherhood and it's family. And the Garzas' hearts, as well as their story, are large enough to welcome us all.

Orale!

Beastie Boys fans with a firm command of DVD angle and subtitle features will find the Criterion Collection's version of the group's Video Anthology a must. Augmenting 18 videos with more than 100 camera angles and remixes old and new, the 2-disc set brings Criterion's attention to detail and quality to bear on some of the most hilarious and visually creative music clips ever. In addition to hits such as "So What'cha Want," "Intergalactic," and "Shake Your Rump," the set also includes such lesser-known cuts as "Ricky's Theme" and "Netty's Girl." Finally, director comments, a mock talk-show appearance by "the cast of Sabotage" (the Beasties' spoof of '70s cop shows), and behind-the-scenes mastermind Nathanial Hörnblowér's "The Robot vs. the Octopus Monster Saga" lend further insight into the Beasties' creative process with their collaborators. Long may they tape. --Rickey Wright

2 out of 5 stars If you like MTV vids and remix beats..........2007-01-15

Basically you get a good selection of videos that you could have seen in from 1989 to 1998 or so on MTV or VH1. There's other goofy camera things to look at while you listen to the same songs. Then you can listen to the same songs over and over again with a different beat. It's 2 discs and each disc runs normally about 30 minutes a piece. I guess it's worth the money if that's what you want but it's kind of boring after watching it once. I think the original beats with the original videos are the most entertaining. When I bought it I thought it would be longer or just better because of all the hyped up talk on here about it.

5 out of 5 stars Almost perfect.......2006-12-10

Great sound and video quality, amost every all yoy need for the perfect collection of beastie video, my only "down" was the exclution of geanial videos like jimmy james, time for living, root down (live in tibetean freedom concert", so wacha want (assassings mix).

I expect a re-edition with the new videos and "all" of the videos.

1 out of 5 stars Where are the Licensed To Ill Songs?.......2006-03-24

There is absolutely no reason for leaving "Fight For Your Right", "No Sleep Till Brooklyn", "Brass Monkey" or other BB hits off this. What's next? A Prince anthology with nothing off "Purple Rain"? A Madonna boxset that leaves out "Like A Virgin"? Paul McCartney renouncing "Yesterday"?

Criterion does movie releases so well (OK they had to re-release "Charade" because the first version wasn't anamorphic) that one has to wonder what the heck happened here. It's insane to think someone actually approved the final version of this product - who cares about 45 different versions of "Shadrach" if the LTI songs are MIA? Get Solid Gold Hits instead - that CD/DVD set has the stuff that made the Beasties famous.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best music DVD I've ever seen. Tons of fun........2006-02-25

The Beastie Boys are true superstars and this DVD proves how on top they really are. This anthology offers hours of play with multiple, exclusive audio tracks offered by a wide variety of different DJ's. It also has cool multiple angles and alternate video themes on the most popular tracks. Some stand-out mixes are the 'Webb 1' and 'Prisoners of Technology' remix of 'Intergalactic' and the 'Shawn J. Period' remix of 'Body Movin'. The 'Count Bass D' remix of 'Hey Ladies' is so funny and every mix of 'Sure Shot' is great. Be sure to watch and hear the remixes of 'Looking Down the Barrell of a Gun'. And; of course, there is 'Something's Got To Give', which is especially intense and thought provoking these days. I could go on forever about this incredible anthology; as many reviewers have, but I'll just be blunt. This is a must have for any ligit hip-hop fan. If you haven't seen and heard this yet you're missing out. Well worth the money to buy your own copy, but you can rent it online too. "So won't you listen!"
