Half its members may be dead and its leader may be keeping a low profile, but the Who remains enormously popular. Devotees who haven't availed themselves of Jeff Stein's thrilling, self-mocking 1979 documentary about the group shouldn't wait another minute now that the film has been painstakingly--perhaps heroically--restored to its theatrical-release length from original elements. The sound is clearer than on previous video releases, images are once more crisp and color-rich, and adjustments in tape speed make the Who sound like themselves again, particularly in vintage television performances and filmed club dates from as far back as the band's sonically thrilling, early R&B period. Special features are, shall we say, extensive: 100 or so minutes of multiple-angle footage, an insightful interview with Roger Daltrey, a featurette about the film's restoration, and a mesmerizing, isolated John Entwistle audio track. --Tom Keogh

I can not add more detail, but go on record when a company does good.......2007-07-06
It seems that every piece of film from the late 60's, early to mid 70's is
being dug up and being dumped right to DVD. The worst of them not even
bothering to re-mix the 16 track masters to 5.1 and use the original PCM
Stereo 2.0 or worse Mono x 2.
This is not that. This is a full restoration/quality
enhancement/clean-up??, and all out re-engineer of the audio tracks and
the outcome is wonderful, superb. This is a must for every Who fan and
IMHO if it were twice the price at $35, it is easily worth every penny. It
is indeed a true special edition.
If companies released enhanced, remastered versions of classics for DVD
media I would gladly pay twice the price for every one of them over the
normal price of a DVD. Or if every effort is made, but there are still
limitations, that is O.K., I can live with it. But can't stand the lazy
media change only. Arghh.
Enjoy this one! What a treat!
LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE.......2007-06-23
If you are a Who fan, you HAVE TO own this. The is a great rockumentary! Definitely one of my favorites, along with the Zeppelin one! I could watch this over and over. It shows their best performances and their personalities. Don't miss out on some classic Jimmy Moon!
THE TRUE MASTERS OF MOTEL/HOTEL & INSTRUMENT MASS DESTRUCTION........2007-06-10
I will be writing a review on the legendary historic classic Rock n' Roll movie entitled "THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT" starring the true masters of disaster and one of England's pride and joys, T-H-E W-H-O! THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT" was originally released in theaters in 1979 by THE WHO group limited and in this DVD Special Edition in 2003 by Pioneer Entertainment (USA) Inc. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary historic movie or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the overall best informative and most accurate review possible.
THE WHO will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for composing and recording some of Rock's most all-time sacred anthems ever. THE WHO will also forever be remembered for being the true masters of disasters by being the kings of motel/hotel & instrument mass destruction. THE WHO at one time were always known for destroying their instruments at the end of their concert performances. If that wasn't enough, Keith Moon would invent and perfect the art of destroying motel/hotel rooms. Moon would also drive cars into swimming pools not just at the motels/hotels, but at his own home. Moon was also known for throwing furniture as well as television sets either off the top roof or out of his room balcony. This whole Rock n' Roll documentary movie is the story of the real genuine original band THE WHO from the 1960's and the 1970's. THIS IS THE WHO AT THEIR VERY BEST people. There are many stories that were left out of the movie and for a very good reason. There were many Moonie stories that were so crazy and dangerous, that they could not be told on film.
The original WHO members comprising of lead singer and frontman Roger Daltrey, lead and rhythm guitarist Pete Townshend, the late great bassist John Entwistle and the late great mad drummer Keith (Moon The Loon) Moon is what made THE WHO the crazy lunatic legends they would forever always be known and remembered for. In my opinion, Keith (Moon The Loon) moon was not just one of the all-time greatest drummers in Rock n' Roll history, but he was one of the craziest lunatics that ever walked the face of the earth, let alone Rock n' Roll history. I have read three books on Keith Moon alone and let me tell you, its really a wonder that Keith Moon lived as long as he did. Keith Moon should have died in his childhood years and not in his thirties. Keith Moon was the most REAL Rock n' Roll star as they came who really truly lived the Rock n' Roll lifestyle like it was a religion.
Moon was extremely charismatic and had an natural sense of humor. Moon was an extremely funny person. Moon actually loved making people laugh and make them happy. However, Moon had the legendary comedian's disease of being extremely funny on the outside, but extremely unhappy in the inside. And that, my fellow Rock n' Roller's, is what would kill him in the end along with the aid of certain prescribed medications he would overdose on to help him kick his alcohol and drug habits.
In my opinion, when you think about it, its really a wonder that Pete Townshend is still alive and lived to tell about it. Pete Townshend was another Keith Moon until the day Moon died. When Keith Moon died in 1978, the Keith Moon that was instilled in Townshend as well as part of Pete Townshend and alot of THE WHO, would die with him forever. THE WHO would never be the same again after Keith Moon died. PLEASE DON'T GET ME WRONG, I AM NOT KNOCKING THE WHO IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM.
"THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT" is THE WHO and all their glory years. This legendary historic film includes blistering live versions of "My Generation," "I Can't Explain," "Young Man (Blues)," "Baba O' Riley," "A Quick One," "Pinball Wizard," "See Me, Feel Me" and "Won't Get Fooled Again." THE WHO would also deliver fine video performances such as "Happy Jack," "Magic Bus" and "Tommy, Can You Hear Me." THE WHO would also record excellent studio outtakes on the legendary song "Who Are You" from 1978.
Following Keith (Moon The Loon) Moon's untimely death in 1978, THE WHO would carry on magnificently and forever keep Moonie's legend alive and intact. The Who would carry on with former FACES drummer Kenney Jones for a little while but Jones WAS NO KEITH MOON. As a result, Jones would soon leave the band. There would be other drummers afterwards that would follow but they could never replace Keith Moon. In my opinion, THE WHO found the PERFECT drummer and the ONLY drummer that is capable of coming close to filling in Keith Moon's shoes. His name, Zak Starkey, son of Richard Starkey A.K.A. one Ringo Starr.
Zak Starkey has come from the bloodline of perhaps, the most famous drummer that ever lived that played in the greatest band that music ever produced, THE BEATLES. It was also Zak who would always call Keith Moon "Uncle Keith." Rock legend has it that Uncle Keith not only purchased Zak's first drum kit, but Uncle Keith as well as Zak's father Ringo taught young Zak quite a bit about drumming. Zak Starkey brought back the youth and the power of THE WHO one more time. With this in mind, THE WHO was performing at a level not seen or heard since Keith Moon was alive and was doing great until John Entwistle died in 2002 on the eve of beginning their tour in Las Vegas, Nevada. When Entwistle died, alot of what remained in the original WHO would also die with him.
In closing, with Daltrey and Townshend that is left of the original WHO and Zak Starkey behind the drumming helms, THE WHO still has proven to persevere and carry on up to this very day. I, for one, wish them all well and hope that they can carry on forever. I would sure love to see it, wouldn't you? Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have truly enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also deeply hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. THE WHO LIVES! R.I.P. Keith (Moon The Loon) Moon (1946-1978) and John Entwistle (1944-2002). Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.
AMAZING........2007-04-11
Pretty much for anyone who ever loved, liked, or mildly enjoyed The Who. It's a rocumentary that just blows every other in its genre out of the water!
A Must -Have!.......2007-03-25
This movie is a must-have if you love rock and roll! Bands like The Who, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Led Zepplin changed the way we listen to music forever. This gives such a rare inside look at the original members that it leaves you feeling like you were along for the ride. The Soundtract to this movie is a must have also! For you gen xer's, the song "Who Are You" wasn't always the theme song to a TV show! I highly reccomend this documentary. Long Live Rock!

In Gridiron Gang, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson once again displays far more cinematic charisma than one could expect from a former professional wrestler. Sean Porter (Johnson, Be Cool), a football player turned juvenile detention counselor, wrestles with a seemingly insolvable problem: The vast majority of young men who leave detention fall right back into crime. Seeking a way to give these not-yet-hardened kids a taste of self-esteem and discipline, Porter persuades his superiors to let him teach the kids football--and then take on high school teams. Though based on a true story (documentary footage over the closing credits reveals that some dialogue was lifted straight from the real Sean Porter's mouth), Gridiron Gang is pure underdogs-overcome-adversity formula. A formula is not necessarily a bad thing; when executed with skill and commitment, fulfilling a classic story mechanism can be perfectly satisfying, and Gridiron Gang qualifies. But it's Johnson who carries it through, demonstrating--in the most unlikely of roles--a surprisingly gentle touch. Johnson manages to be manly without overbearing machismo, earning not only respect but empathy. --Bret Fetzer

Product Description
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson stars in this gritty and inspirational movie based on a true story of a group of teenage delinquents given a second chance to redeem themselves by playing football. Sean Porter (Johnson) is a frustrated juvenile probation officer. Most of the kids in his detention camp are either sent back to prison once they leave or meet a violent end when they return to the streets. Desperately looking for a way to make a difference, he and his co-worker Malcolm Moore (Xzibit, TV's Pimp My Ride) devise a plan to teach discipline and responsibility through the game of football. But with only four weeks before the start of the season, Porter must overcome insurmountable odds to put together a competitive team. It's a season that will test their minds, spirit, and bodies as Porter teaches his players the principles of good character, strength through resiliency, and genuine respect for one another.
Customer Reviews:
An okay movie..........2007-06-04
Could have been more motivating though. Youth have a hard time and this movie definitely shows the motives, struggles, and hardships they will have to overcome in order to make it in this life.
Wonderful.......2007-06-03
The Gridiron Gang is based on the true story of Sean Porter, a probation officer who started a football program at Camp Kilpatrick, a California juvenile offender facility. The film, starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as Porter, was inspired by a documentary of the same name.
The Gridiron Gang starts out formulaic, with Porter spouting all manner of coach cliches, like "Before, you were all losers. Now, you are Mustangs." But as the film goes on, and you get wrapped up in the story, it is inspirational, motivational, and will move some to tears. It did me.
The Rock is great. He has football experience, having gone to college on a football scholarship, and played on a collegiate national championship team. His experience and love of the game shine through. But although he is a capable star, the film belongs to the young men who played the Mustang's first team. They really got into the movie and make you believe you are watching the actual events.
The epilouge is satisfying. It shows what happened to the players on the team, and shows snatches of the real documentary, the real Porter, and the real players. And if you haven't cried by then? You will now, I guarantee it.
The Rock at his best.......2007-05-28
The rock aint much of an actor but on this one here i got to give it to him. Great movie, great message, just put it like this the best his ever done
"The Rock" of Gibraltar.......2007-05-21
Who really wants to see another feel-good movie about a tough educator who takes on both the most violent juvenile delinquents and "the system," raising them from the abyss of failure and imprisonment to success that they wouldn't have dared dream of only months before? Do we really need another formulaic sports flick, "based on a true story" about a coach taking his rag-tag team of underdogs all the way to the city championship?
You bet we do!
In what's being touted as Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's dramatic debut, Gridiron Gang showcases both the former professional wrestler's physical prowess and his emerging acting chops as tough-as-nails juvenile detention officer Sean Porter. Frustrated by the 75 percent recidivism rate of the teen felons in his charge at the Camp Kilpatrick reformatory in Los Angeles County, Porter sees that the vicious circle of violence, gang activity, and growing up without fathers has doomed them to wasted lives behind bars.
He keeps sending one troubled kid in particular, Roger (Michael J. Pagan), to "the hole" for punishment.
"Where're you gonna be in four years?" Porter grills him.
"In jail," the sulking youth answers.
"No! You're going to be dead!"
Sure enough, even though Roger is trying to go straight, while on release a week later he is gunned down in a drive-by shooting while hanging out with his old gang. Soon Roger's brother Willie (Jade Yorker) winds up at the same reformatory when he shoots his mother's abusive live-in boyfriend.
Driving home from work one night, Porter spots a group of kids playing football under the lights and has an inspiration. As a last-ditch effort to try to turn around the presumably unsalvageable lives of Camp Kilpatrick's murderers, rapists, and carjackers, he launches a football program.
Porter cajoles many of the toughest youths to join the Mustang team, where nobody gets a free ride and membership has to be earned. Attempting to convince the skeptical administration to fund his team, he reminds them that "these kids have never worked hard for anything in their lives." Once his kids amble onto the practice field, they learn that being tough is more than bullying and posturing, but requires discipline, commitment, and self-restraint.
What impressed me most were the sequences in which Porter builds up the team, drilling them through tough workouts and scrimmages, testing their endurance, and, for the first time in their lives, forging their characters. As with Spencer Tracy's Father Flanagan in the 1938 classic Boys Town, Porter operates on the premise that his boys are not inherently bad. "You are somebody," he tells them, "and are worthy of something." But his attempts to inspire the team go beyond mere pep talks: Porter instills in them the lesson that true self-esteem can be gained only by achievement, not merely by inflating their egos with false praise. "It's a whole new world out there when you earn things," he tells them.
Having Coach Porter as the first man in their lives to believe in them and serve as a father figure fills the youths with false expectations at their first game. Despite a couple of good tackles early on, the Mustangs get a rude awakening once their opponents gather steam. After getting stomped on for a 38-0 loss, not only do many on the team start to question whether the football program is worth it, but so do some of Camp Kilpatrick's administrators.
"We wanted to create self-esteem, but it was just the opposite," one of them laments to Porter. "These kids can't handle that kind of disappointment. We have to pull the plug."
Just as everyone seems willing to throw in the towel, one of Porter's players, Junior (Setu Taase), discovers that self-esteem is more than immediate gratification, and requires diligent effort even in the face of crushing defeat. Junior convinces his teammates why they must not give up. "It's like I told you, Coach," he explains to Porter, "we're tired of being losers." Predictably, the Mustangs improve and fight their way to the playoffs.
While the action on the field is shot a little too claustrophobically with telephoto lenses, the movie as a whole doesn't suffer much. Trevor Rabin (of the group Yes) provides an emotionally rousing soundtrack. But the pillar of the film is The Rock, who supports it with a strong performance. A former University of Miami football standout, he brings credibility and conviction to his role. While he's come a long way from his "Layeth the Smacketh Down" WWF days, The Rock is still not exactly an accomplished and subtle actor. Of course, tough kids don't need understatement and nuance--they need sturdy and straightforward. Think Lee Marvin's Major Reisman from The Dirty Dozen, crossed with Glenn Ford's Mr. Dadier in Blackboard Jungle.
In the durable genre of tough educators who turn around troubled inner-city youths, The Rock's turn on screen in Gridiron Gang doesn't rise to the level of Morgan Freeman's breakthrough performance in Lean on Me (1989), or Sidney Poitier's memorable turn in To Sir, with Love (1967). Neither does Gridiron Gang belong in the same league with other great sports flicks about underdog teams who go all the way to the top, like Hoosiers (1986) or Friday Night Lights (2004).
But, as a movie which straddles both genres, it really gels and will lift the spirits of most viewers. Sure, Gridiron Gang is formulaic. But what makes it enjoyable and moving is the true-life example of how one man turns around the lives of troubled kids by instilling them with pride, faith in themselves, and awareness that they are not born criminals, but possess the free will to make productive lives for themselves.
No-excuses self-esteem requires a formula, too; and Gridiron Gang shows how it's done.
Gridiron Gang.......2007-05-13
Great movie. Never even heard of the movie before but my husband and I like football and we've been watching some of the Rock's movies. He is a personable actor whose side you want to be on. It was a true story and that made it even more poignant. We've watched it several times already having just received it last week.

Don Bluth's lavish animated musical Rock-A-Doodle was not a success when it was released in 1992. It's not hard to understand why: the film varies wildly in tone and the story makes little sense. In the live-action prologue, a little boy named Edmond learns that the crowing of Chanticleer the rooster did not make the sun rise, as everyone thought. But when a flood threatens his family's farm, Edmond sets off to get Chanticleer to make the sun rise and save the day. (Edmond gets turned into a kitten during this adventure, for no apparent reason other than that cats are easier to animate than humans.) Chanticleer has moved to the city, and although the farm seems to be in the Midwest, the nearest city is clearly supposed to be Las Vegas. Chanticleer is now the King, an Elvis caricature used for an unfunny spoof of showbiz clichés. The animation is quite fluid, and there are lots of brightly colored effects--rainbows, sparkles, sunbeams. But parents will have a hard time explaining the story to their children. --Charles Solomon
Customer Reviews:
Great Kid movie.......2007-07-07
I'm a school teacher and during the summer we offer a summer camp. Remembering how much I loved this movie, I showed it to the children ages 5-11. They absolutley loved it! They were so quiet. They even sang the song I wanna rock a doodle to you. It's awesume even the other teachers enjoyed. It's a great family film you'll love it!
Rock-A-Doodle-What? A turkey cartoon for Bluth that simply doesn't shine (or sing)........2007-05-19
I don't know what Don Bluth was thinking when he made this silly, nonsensical animated musical about a singing rooster, but I know what I'm thinking: "Why?" ROCK-A-DOODLE isn't as depressing or dreary as Bluth's previous ALL DOGS GO TO HEAVEN, but it's not much better.
The film tells the story of Chanticleer, a barnyard rooster with a golden voice whose crooning -- sorry, crowing -- makes the sun rise every day. One morning, however, Chanticleer is attacked by a bully rooster; in the process he neglects his crowing duties and the sun comes up anyway. After being laughed at by his friends, the disgraced rooster heads off to the city. Then it starts to rain, and before long, all the animals are terrorized by both floods and the evil Grand Duke of Owls, who, it turns out, actually set up the whole thing simply because he dislikes the sun. In arguably one of the few memorable lines this movie offers, he also sneers, "I positively LOATHE rock and roll."
Naturally, the animals head off to the city to find Chanticleer, who, by this point, has become a famous star dubbed "the King," with a greedy manager and a reluctant girlfriend, Goldie. If the animals can bring Chanticleer back to the farm, the sun will once again rise and the floods will stop. To prevent this, the Duke sends his clumsy (and unfortunately not very funny) nephew, Hunch (whose vocabulary mostly consists of rhyming with the word "annihilation") after the animals.
The plot, such as it is, doesn't make the least amount of sense and is likely to baffle even the most intelligent of grown-ups. Working against ROCK-A-DOODLE as a whole, however, is the haphazard and confusing execution. It also suffers from the problem of a major identity crisis: on one hand it tries to be a simplistic fairy tale, on the other it attempts to be a musical parody of Elvis (Chanticleer's rock star persona and his songs are very closely modeled after the legendary singer, from the slick hairdo to the deep voice and the mannerisms). However, it ultimately comes across as a hodgepodge of ideas crashing into each other.
Furthermore, the characters, in addition to being unattractively designed, are not particularly compelling. Chanticleer, while supplying a dead-on impression of Elvis Presley down to the voice and the singing (courtesy of Glen Campbell), is a two-dimensional lead. His barnyard friends, which include Patou, a droopy canine unable to tie his shoes, Peepers, a bespectacled and lisping mouse, and Snipes, a zany magpie, do little to emerge as anything memorable, although the first two are well voiced by Phil Harris and Sandy Duncan, respectively. Hunch, as mentioned, is unfunny, and useless. That leaves the character of Goldie, Chanticleer's love interest, who is supposed to be a tough girl that eventually falls in love with our hero, but the screenplay doesn't give her much to do. One suspects that she was included in this film just for the sake of a love interest. As for the Grand Duke, he's little more than your typical scary, nasty, scheming bad guy, despite having the voice of Christopher Plummer. And don't even get me started on where his supernatural powers (that enable him to grow to enormous size or transform anybody) came from.
Where ROCK-A-DOODLE really falls apart is in its attempt to bookend the movie with live-action sequences. The idea is to include a real-life little boy, Edmond, as one of the story's major protagonists. Actually, he spends much of the film transformed as an animated kitten (a transition that feels very awkward and unnatural). And whining about how he is unable to do anything as a result of being small. Constantly. This subplot feels like it was tacked onto the story, hence one gets the feeling that it came out of nowhere.
There are also two live-action/animation sequences in the movie, but unlike WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT, they come across as very patchy and unconvincing--the real-life surroundings don't mesh well with the drawings, and it looks especially bad at the song and dance finale when the kid actor playing Edmond, Toby Scott-Granger, is brought back to the cartoon world. Speaking for the animation itself, it's pretty much below par, even for a Bluth production.
Equally distracting is the narration that supplies most of the film. Phil Harris has a great voice and does a credible job (although some might find it strange that the dog is recounting the whole thing). The problem is that he narrates CONSTANTLY, even going far to chime in over some catchy songs sung by Chanticleer. Considering that this film is supposed to be a musical, having Harris chime in every two minutes proves to be very distracting. (The narration was apparently added on to prevent audiences from being confused, but why did they have to overdo it?)
Probably the only things that come clean out of this mess are the voice work and the musical score by Robert Folk. Campbell, Harris, Duncan, Plummer, and squeaky Ellen Greene (as Goldie) all do the best they can with their characters, although Toby Scott-Granger's childish speech impediment does get in the way of his portrayal of Edmond (although considering how weak his character is, it's no surprise he doesn't give a memorable performance). The underscore, as mentioned, is also beautiful, far better than this movie has any right to be. T.J. Kuenster's dozen songs, on the other hand, are mediocre to bad, particularly the owls' Bach-style numbers, although the ones for Chanticleer are admittingly a lot of fun.
As entertainment, ROCK-A-DOODLE is mostly harmless fare for younger kids. It has its funny moments, but anyone else older will find this to be uninspired and chaotic. Considering that this is from the director of THE SECRET OF NIMH, AN AMERICAN TAIL, and THE LAND BEFORE TIME, though, its a disappointing endeavor. Regrettably, after this movie, Bluth's output would only get worse, with the exceptions of THUMBELINA and ANASTASIA.
Old Favorite!.......2007-05-06
This was a favorite of mine when my oldest daughter (now 15) was little. Now my youngest (19mos.) gets to enjoy a really great movie! Excellent lessons to learn about friendship, and everyone's importance in the world, with enjoyable music and delightful characters!
Still as good as I remember.......2007-04-05
Since when do cartoons make sense?! It's unique. I like all Don Bluth movies. It has a moral to the story too- even small people can do big things. I've enjoyed this movie my whole life and now my 3 yr old loves it too.
Wait, shouldn't it be Rock-A-Doodle-Do?.......2007-03-16
If there's one thing that I can't stand, it's when nostalgia blinds people. Too many times have I seen people going on about how great a movie from their childhood was, but they haven't watched it again recently to really stand by that statement. I've been watching a lot of older movies that I liked, or missed out on from my childhood these past few weeks, and it's amazing how few of them hold up today. That's not to sound like some cold person who doesn't like kid's movies or anything- I love my fair share of the genre, and am not biased to who makes them, be it Disney or Fox or another company. In fact, both Disney and Fox have movies I've re-watched that seem downright stupid. And then there's Don Bluth's movies, which are generally praised for not being too cutesy or too out there. An American Tail, All Dogs Go To Heaven, The Secret of NIMH, etc. Many of these are beloved by children and adults to this day, and I can say that those previously mentioned hold up marvelously to this day. But what about one of the lesser-known ones, Rock-A-Doodle? I saw this when it hit theaters over 10 years ago and remembered loving it, though before re-watching it, I don't remember why. All I remembered were some of the characters, and the main plot. How'd it do in the end? Well, 50/50...more or less.
The movie starts out with a mom and her son, Edmond, reading a storybook about a rooster named Chanticleer, who works on a farm with all the other animals. His job is to crow every morning in order to make the sun rise. He had a great singing voice and everyone loved him, except for one person- the Grand Duke, a big owl who just plain hates light. He sends one of his buddies to fight Chanticleer in order to take him out of the business, but Chanticleer wins the fight. Unfortunately for him, that was only half of the plan, since by the time the fight's over, the sun has began to rise, and everyone sees that Chanticleer wasn't needed for it to happen. It breaks his heart, and he leaves the farm in order to find work in the city. Just then, we cut back to the boy and his mom, who are now in big trouble, as their farm is in danger of being flooded due to the rain. Be it a learning disability or just hearing the story, Edmond decides that they need Chanticleer to make the sun come up and stop the rain [after he just heard that Chanticleer wasn't needed, no less]. Things get worse, and by some amazing fluke, the Grand Duke shows up in Edmond's room, and turns him into a cat with the hope of eating him. Yeah, he showed up just for that. Before he can though, a noble dog and friend of Chanticleer, Patou, shows up and bites the Duke's leg, and Edmond blinds him with a flashlight. The two befriend one another, and make a plan to find Chanticleer, along with a few other animals who tag along. As their luck may have it, Chanticleer did find work in the city, but now he goes by a different name, and has much more success this time around.
Yeah, there's not much to the plot. The Duke sends a complete idiot of a minion to track down Edmond and the others, while he has a few other much more reliable guys instead, plus the Duke's more than capable of taking care of things himself. I mean, he just turned a kid into a cat, and can grow well over ten times his original size. He even gives his nephew, the idiot minion, a pair of sunglasses to ward off the lights of the city. Why didn't he use them himself in the first place? Anyway, most of the cast here is forgettable. Patou and Chanticleer, and maybe Peepers (a mouse with a lisp), are the ones you'll remember the most, especially since they get the most dialogue. All the other farm animals are filler, and I couldn't care less what happened to them when I was a kid, and labeled them as "dead to me" this time around. ESPECIALLY that pig with the crew cut. The animation in Rock-A-Doodle feels very cheap as well. Yes, it's a non-Disney movie from the early 90s, but man, I can name some animated shows from that same time that looked better than this does. Heck, even An American Tail looks more current than Rock-A-Doodle. The new box art image doesn't help in its defense either. On top of this, the few times when real life is blended with animation, it looks VERY dated. I mean, even Pete's Dragon looks state-of-the-art compared to this. Finally, I always thought something was off in the plot when I was a kid, but couldn't put my finger on it. Now I know what it is- a plot point involving Chanticleer and how he shouldn't pay attention to his past friends. It's handled so poorly that I had to skip back a few chapters, thinking I missed something big somehow. Nope, it's just something barely mentioned that works its way into the story. Perhaps I'm being too hard, given this is a kid's movie, but again, I like many of the genre, and really can't see showing this to my daughter when she gets older unless there's nothing else for her to watch, unless she wants to of course. If I were reviewing just the movie, I'd be nice in giving it 3 stars, but it's really more of a 2.5.
What hurts the score here even more is the poor picture quality. The animation's already dated enough, but the transfer looks like it comes from a copied vhs tape, or even Betamax. The movie is presented in full screen, and you can tell that something's missing on the sides. There's a lot of grain here and there, as well as interlacing and jaggy lines on the close-up shots. The sound does a little better, but not much. It was nice and loud, and musical sequences didn't sound over mixed or anything. At least they got this right. And even better, you get some subtitle options just in case!
Special features? Well, if the trailer and sneak peeks of other similar movies count, you're in for a treat! Other than that, there's nothing. 'not too surprising given how little the movie made, but you'd think there'd be even a featurette with the voice actors or something. A future rerelease doesn't look likely, so this is the only version to get if you want it, though I'd try and get the first release with the less cheap looking cover.
There's really not much more to say here. Rock-A-Doodle is a slightly below average kid's movie that you probably won't remember unless you watch it several times over the course of a month or two, or force yourself to think it's still great because you liked it from 10+ years ago. By all means, give the other Bluth movies a shot before giving this one a try. If you haven't seen the likes of Secret of NIMH and watch Rock-A-Doodle first, it might leave a bad impression on what the rest of his work is like. Add this one with A Troll in Central Park and The Pebble and the Penguin.

A slightly dated but nonetheless fascinating snapshot of musical history, Beat Street is an urban musical detailing the roots of hip-hop. Set in early-1980s New York, the film focuses on the lives of a small group of young people setting their experiences against the larger backdrop of the city's burgeoning music scene. The story of up-and-coming DJ Kenny (Guy Davis) and his relationship with jazz musician Tracy (Rae Dawn Chong) may only be a device, but it's surprisingly effective, as is the ultimately tragic tale of graffiti artist Ramon (Jon Chardiet). The movie's real raison d'être, however, is to showcase the sounds of the street, so it's full of some of hip-hop's most influential names--Melle Mel, Doug E Fresh, Kool Moe Dee, the Rocksteady Crew, Jazzy Jeff, and Arthur Baker. And while the combination of electro and rapping may sound a little crude to modern ears, there can be no doubt that Beat Street is the sight and sound of history being made. --Phil Udell
Description
Widely considered the most influential hip-hop movie of all time, this "gritty, streetwise musical"(LA Herald-Examiner) features a who's who of the movement's early starsKool DJ Herc, KoolMoe Dee, Doug E. Fresh, Afrika Bambaataa and Melle Melas well as the famous Rocky Steady Crew vs. New York City Breakers battle at the Roxy. Uniting the four elements of hip-hopbreakdancing, DJ-ing, MC-ing and graffitiinto an unforgettable experience, Beat Street is a true classic, packed with sharp lyrics, powerful moves and the flashiest dance sets the screen has ever seen! When rapper-DJ Kenny (Guy Davis) meets cultured jazz artist Tracy (Rae Dawn Chong), he is so inspired by her dedication that he vows to use his talents to escape the ghetto. But when his friend, a gifted graffiti artist, is killed in a tragic accident, Kenny comes face to face with the high price of artistic passion.

Beat Street.......2007-05-24
I enjoyed this movie just as much as I enjoyed it over 20 years ago. It basically gives the East Coast Version of breakdancing and rap and how it got started
solid gold.......2007-05-23
For anyone who ever had a rap/hip-hop/break-dance bone in their body this is the ultimate movie. Probably overshadowed in its time because of Fame, Footloose, and the antics of Michael Jackson, but this in my opinion ranks up there with the best of the dance culture. Unfortunately I lost those bones after growing taller, but this movie was a blast from the past and will stay high up on my DVD stacks.
very good and interesting movie.......2007-03-09
the movie held your interest and had a good storyline about the youth of america
Take It Off The Rack And It's Wack Put It Back.......2006-10-23
I don't know what's up with all of these 4-5 star reviews. This movie was awful. There was no plot and the movie just seemed to drag. Not even the guest appearances by Afrika Bambataa, Melle Mel, and the Rock Steady Crew could save it. I couldn't wait for it to be over with. The "graffiti" throughout the movie was absolutely awful. Ramo and his girlfriend were too white to have a baby that dark with curly hair. Guy Davis was fine back then, but not anymore. Rae Dawn Chong was just annoying. This is one movie I never want to see again.
The Uncut Version.......2006-09-28
This movie is nostalgic for me. It reminds me of an era that I miss greatly. Many people here criticize its accuracy talking about bad grafitti, acting, love songs, etc. What do you guys mean? I am a New York Puertorican, Newyorican raised in Ravenswood Projects, Queens, Bushwick, Brooklyn and went to school in Spanish Harlem. This was back in the day when NYC was tough. La Familia, Ballbuster, Zulu Nation ruled the streets back then.
So I guess I got the right to say the movie accurately portrays life in NYC in the 80's. Some guy here criticized the love songs. C'mon man. What, people back then in the projects didn't love anyone?, had a girlfriend, etc? I find the movie to be so real that I definitely want to move back to NYC.
I know New York isn't the same. The South Bronx is being renovated. The gangs are gone. All the bombers, Lee jeans creased down the middle and finely pressed and jackets, the pumas and adidas with the thick laces in checkerboard formation, the boricuas with their wild Carribean looks, its ALL gone. But I need to go back, if not to play chinese handball at the schoolyard one more time.
I didn't give it 5 stars because there are deleted scenes. Why won't they come out with a DVD including those deleted scenes? I guarantee you everyone that bought this DVD would buy that one also.

I Like My Cheese Straight From The Can!.......2007-02-13
This is one of those "so awful it's unintentionally amazing" kinds of movies. It's everything that was cheesy about the 80's, only on wheels. I mean, this movie has so much cheese food goodness, it practically explodes from the can. You couldn't find more succulent cinematic trash (I mean "thrash") if you tried!
Need more proof? How 'bout this: the movie's theme song is performed by none other than Meat Loaf. That's right: you get meat and cheez - two essential sk8r food groups - right from the get go! What more do you need?! (Is it some great old skool skating you desire? Well it's got that too, with some of the greatest skaters of that time.)
And sure, Hook and the Daggers' (the "punk" villains) opening skate sequence is about as menacing as Pat Benatar's girlie group dance in the "Love Is a Battlefield" video, but c'mon - this here's a classic! Plus you haven't really lived until you've seen Hook's air guitar prowess. (Also, now-jailed ex-skater Gator plays one of the Daggers, so I really wouldn't mess with them...)
Yup. This movie is one that formed me. In fact, to this very day I often find myself thinking, "What would Radster do in a situation like this?" (trivia fact: Josh Richman, the actor who played Radley, now manages the band Deadsy, of Family Values Tour fame and acclaim).
And speaking of bands... I've always wondered how the Red Hot Chili Peppers (who appear at a party with their original lineup playing "Black Eyed Blonde") felt to be included amidst all the synthesized bleeps and blorps of the new wave Thomas Dolby-esque soundtrack? I mean, seriously - it's about the most anti-skate soundtrack you could possibly put together!
The song playing during the inevitable love scene is just hilariously awful - like a poor man's "Almost Paradise" (if you can even imagine a lesser version of that song). (All right, I'll admit that the Circle Jerks playing "Wild in the Streets" almost makes up for it) (almost) (but I was still glad to hear in the commentary that even this movie's director hates that song)
Suffice it to say: without this flick, I would have never known how to get ready for a joust (you paint your eyes like some sort of radioactive pirate raccoon, of course)! It seems so obvious once this movie shows you the way, but without it? Well, I wouldn't have a clue. (note: a joust is a skateduel where two people try to hit each other with combination maces/man-purses, later recreated as an homage by the Jackass crew.)
And I won't give away what happens at the spectacularly surprising and climactic climax at Tuna Canyon ("the steepest and gnarliest course on the circuit," dooood), but suffice it to say: it's bitchin'. I'm not kidding.
This DVD also features an awesome commentary track where they call Johnny Depp and rag on Tony Hawk (who appeared in this movie at age 15 but later dissed it in his book), among other things. There are so many great lines from the commentary track alone to make this worth your while, but I'll leave you with Robert Rusler (Hook) talking about Hawk: "If I knew that man was going to be a tri-zillionaire, I would've been nicer to him on the set." Heh!
robert rusler is my hero!!!.......2007-01-11
this movie is amazing! watch the movie with the commentary!!!
Heck yeah.......2006-12-31
Good flick, just like I remember it on VHS, just now in the durability of DVD. Very '80's, but fun.....still hate the bad guys, love watchin' the action. Good flick for you '80s junkies!!!! Now where the heck is Rad on DVD?
Great 80's skate scenes...........2006-12-17
The movie is pretty cheesy. The production quality is low, the acting is almost laughable, and you'll hear some of the worst music ever used in a motion picture (and definitely not representative of skating in any era). However, here is why the movie gets 5 stars. There is so much skating that takes place that even if you hate the story you can appreciate the movie for the on board action. It really reflects the mid-80's skate scene by including pool, ramp, streetstyle, freestyle, and downhill. The actors are weak but the actual skating stunt doubles were the best of their time - Tony Hawk, Tony Alva, Per Welinder, Mike McGill, Steve Caballero, Christian Hosoi, Lester Kasai, Billy Ruff, Steve Steadham, Tony Magnussen, & Lance Mountain. Also some of the earliest Red Hot Chilli Peppers footage you'll probably ever find.

Franc Roddam's terrifically energetic movie, set to music from the Who's Quadrophenia, is--at the very least, the best film ever based on a rock album (and, yes, that includes, Tommy, Pink Floyd: The Wall, and Jesus Christ Superstar). Actually, this tale of the battle between two early '60s youth subcultures--Mods and Rockers--in the seaside teenage wasteland of Brighton, England, isn't so much a cinematic "version" of the Who's 1979 double-record rock opera as it is a story based on the sequence of songs on the album. Quadrophenia is about that crucial time in teenhood when the lion's share of your sense of identity is tied up in the music you listen to, the clothes you wear, and the groups you hang out with. Jimmy (Phil Daniels) identifies himself with the sharp-dressing, scooter-riding Mods, who listen to American soul and British pop-rock (The Who themselves were once rather Mod). The Rockers, on the other hand, are leather-jacketed, black-booted, motorcycle-riding tough guys who listen primarily to classic American rock & roll. The film captures this minor pop-culture revolution perfectly. Look for Sting as a club-hopping slickster, who's shameful secret is that he's a hotel bellboy by day. --Jim Emerson

Quadroriphic!.......2006-11-05
If you want to see a great movie about the Mod Movement in the 1960s, strap your self in for the (vespa) ride.
Quadrophenia, The Movie .......2006-10-31
As a huge Who fan I loved this flick. It brought the lyrics of the album to life. Pretty well acted too. Phil Daniels as "Jimmy" was great. You do need to pay close attention to the dialog as the british cockney accents are very strong. Gives you a true feel for life in early '60s England. I have an old VHS that I copied back in 1980 and I'm thrilled to be buying a DVD edition in 5.1 quality sound to rock out to the Who's best album (in my opinion) all over again! Sad to think there's just Pete and Roger left of the Who now but their music lives on forever!! If you get the chance, check out this movie!
This film is disgusting.......2006-10-04
If you want to watch a movie where young boys (unattractive teenage boys, ladies) sit in bath tubs, with no attempt to hide their private parts with bubbles. All the while they curse back and forth at each other in such a harsh British accent, that all one can understand is the foul language; then this film is for you.
Half way through, I took out my sharp compass and scrapped the word "Disgusting" across the DVD, so I could never make the same mistake of watching this rubbish again. I'm U.S. Navy (Retired). And I have never, ever, heard such needless foul language even from drunken sailors, as is in this film.
Mods rule ok.......2006-08-31
What a movie...like it or not this movie tells it how it was in the 60's in England. The clashes of police with mods and rockers, scooters versus motorbikes and the effects of alcohol and sex in finding oneself. The music of The Who brings it altogether. Buy it...you will feel yourself singing 'My Generation' for days after...Enjoy!
Cult nostalgia.......2006-08-27
The themes explored in this movie are pretty cliche - angst ridden young man finds illusory identity in youth cult, gets off with girl, gets dumped by girl, then goes beserk. But worth seeing for the brilliant evocation of a time in the 60s when gang war between Mods and Rockers ruled. And Leslie Ash at her finest as the temptress Steph (way before her ill advised lip enlargement). And Sting as a curiously stilted club hipster.

Basically, this is a collection of songs from 30 years of Sesame Street, in which sweet Elmo and his Muppet pals are joined by David Alan Grier, Jon Stewart, Gloria Estefan, the Fugees, Shawn Colvin, and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. Grier (of the comically sour face) and Stewart (of the ironic smile) provide some funny stuff, and the Muppets share songs with the musical guests. This nonstop revue is a blast for parents as well as little ones. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely Love This One!.......2007-03-27
The music is addictive, we've had this DVD for 9 months or so now and it's one my daughter asks for by name. I've just ordered the CD for the car because she's always singing songs from it! We love the Shawn Colvin version of "Don't Want to Live on the Moon" it's very sweet and we sing it a lot together!
Not for everyone, but very well done!.......2006-12-29
Pros:
1. Some stand-out performances by some stars that only Sesame Street could get to sing with a puppet. Like them or not, En Vogue does a beautiful video about monsters. Rosie O'Donnell does a terrific duet with Elmo, teaching that singing isn't about "vocal talent" but presense and fun. Jon Stewart and David Alan Grier are both unexpected naturals on a Muppets'stage and showed serious kid appeal. And The Fugees are so good in this, their two minutes are alone worth keeping the movie for.
2. Nice, basic messages for kids and adults to learn: *problem-solving, *how to work together, *to never underestimate the contributions of the smallest (a lesson brought in several times) and *that music is for everyone, not just famous singers.
3. Some of the songs are very catchy. My 3 yr old is singing Gloria Estefan's Mambo song around the house after hearing it maybe 4 times.
Cons:
1. The title suggests it stars Elmo, which it doesn't.
2. Some of the artists are weak here, while others rock the house. I hoped for a lot better from the Mighty Mighty Bosstones.
