5 out of 5 stars priceless.......2007-06-14

What a setting for a live concert, the steps of the Sydney opera house with 120,000 lively fans in attendance. As others have said, the musical performance is stunning. Compliments must also go to everyone involved in the production - the sound is to die for, the cameras give every performer his due in sharp focus, the staging and colors are eye-candy. This is one of those things that gets better with each viewing. One of the best performance videos I've seen.

How does the dvd compare with the 2 cd set? Are there songs on one and not the other?

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Best Live Recordings Ever!.......2007-04-22

Recorded in 1996 at the Sydney Opera House plaza, "Crowded House" plays their farewell concert to an appreciative crowd of over 120,000. The 24-song set contains amazingly pure and tight sound with Neil Finn's voice at its best. There are no stand-out cuts, as the band gives it best performance to date on every track. It is flawless. The comments from the band to the audience between songs makes this one of the most personable concerts ever recorded. Slight variations on some songs and an accent here and there make the fans sing along throughout. The closing song, "Don't Dream its Over" is as emotional as ever, with shots of the crowd signing along and the band emoting, realizing this really is their last song together. It's one of the best concerts of the last two decades.

The extras include an optional commentary by the band in subtitles. The second disc has a 20-minute documentary about the enormous planning it took to stage this event, mostly narrated by the band's manager. Also included are a few featurettes, a photo gallery and the full "Crowded House" discography. This is one of those collectable packages that you'll never tire of.

5 out of 5 stars A piece of magic.......2007-02-20

I remember the first concert vividly, beamed into the homes of all us Aussies. Crowded House was one of the greatest bands to ever come from our shores (and thanks to the Kiwis just a little bit too!). This concert really was the band probably at their finest, loosened from the shackles of internal conflicts and turmoils that precipitated the need for a break, which at the time we thought was permanent. I had this on VHS as soon as it came out and so with great pleasure do I get to crack this open and relive the memories yet again. The cd is fantastic also but if you get a chance to sit and absorb just how good this band was, it is certainly worth the watch. Great memories all around.

2 out of 5 stars Good schlock but still schlock.......2006-11-10

If you are a fan of Diane Franklin then this movie is definitely a must have. Other than that there is not much to recommend this movie. Robert Morley is in this movie but is under-utilized. The movie does not age well & it is obvious that this is a 1980s pulp movie.

1 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware.......2006-07-07

Sometimes, you can get a good quality DVD in this one's price range. Not in this case. This looks like a VHS dubbed to DVD, by some company called Platinum. Disk appears burned, not pressed.

3 out of 5 stars Anything with Diane Franklin can't be too bad.......2004-09-21

This movie doesn't have the best writing or production quality, but it's a cute concept and Diane Franklin does extensive (artistically done) nude scenes in the Garden of Eden sequence where she _bares_ it all (what is our educational system coming to?) as Eve.

3 out of 5 stars Young.......2003-03-11

I saw this Movie when I was 12 when it came on to HBO I remembered it being very erotic at that age. I bought it and loved it. If you Liked Better Off Dead you would love this. Monique The French girl.. She, well lets say bears it all.

Amazon.com essential video

Originally produced as a three-part miniseries for New Zealand television, this extraordinary film is based on the life of Janet Frame, an introverted, sensitive girl who was later misdiagnosed as schizophrenic and spent eight years in a psychiatric hospital. She would later become one of New Zealand's most celebrated poets and novelists, publishing her first books while she was still confined to a mental ward. She had endured over 200 electroshock treatments and had almost been lobotomized by careless physicians who took no time to understand that she was merely awkward and shy and suffered from little more than routine depression. From a solid screenplay by Laura Jones, director Jane Campion (The Piano) tells this story without soapy melodrama, but rather as an exploration of a challenged creative spirit--a journey into a writer's mind, exploring the power of imagination as a mechanism of survival and self-defense. Three talented actors play Janet Frame at different ages throughout the film, with Kerry Fox giving a powerful performance as the young-adult Janet, whose own skill and creative tenacity would prove to be her salvation. Frightening, harrowing, and ultimately a source of humanistic enlightenment, An Angel at My Table (titled after Frame's autobiography) is a film you won't soon forget. --Jeff Shannon

Description

With An Angel at My Table, Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Jane Campion brings to the screen the harrowing true story of Janet Frame, New Zealand's most distinguished author. The film follows Frame along her inspiring journey, from a poverty-stricken childhood to a misdiagnosis of schizophrenia and electroshock therapy to, finally, international literary fame. Beautifully capturing the color and power of the New Zealand landscape, the film earned Campion a sweep of her country's film awards and the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A Portrait of an Artist.......2006-08-31

"An Angel at My Table" (1990) made by Jane Campion is a true life-story of Janet Frame (1924-2004), New Zealand's most famous author. The film starts with young Jane, a funny -looking red haired girl, shy and quiet who knew too well that she was "poor, smelly, and unpopular". Then it follows her to misdiagnosis of schizophrenia and more than 200 electroshock treatments in a mental hospital where she had spent eight years and a severe, lifelong shyness that was her only problem. Even in the hospital she was writing and was able to have her book published - writing did save her from losing her mind. The film is based on three of her memoirs, "To the Is-land", "An Angel at My Table" and "The Envoy from Mirror City".

Jane Campion made a very affecting and quietly powerful portrait of a writer who also was a gentle and genuinely humble woman. The film is never a sentimental manipulating story of a talented but misunderstood artist. It does not idealize Frame but it is a very honest and sympathetic portrait of an artist.

5 out of 5 stars "Hush...Hush...Hush...".......2006-06-28

Writers, take note: Here is a very, very rare example of the creative spirit--and the creative process--captured on film. This story of the formative years of Janet Frame, New Zealand's most celebrated poet and novelist, is fascinating from start to finish.

Director Jane Campion's great achievement (aided immeasurably by three marvelous actresses playing Janet Frame at various ages) is to bring to a wide audience a sense of what it is like to be a creative artist. Watch Janet throughout her odd, harrowing, uplifting early years, and you will see the evolution of a true genius, a human sponge who soaks up all her experiences (good and bad) and converts them into gorgeous words. Rarely has a film been able to illustrate this so convincingly.

I recommend this film to anyone interested in the nature of genius. But for writers, in particular, it is required viewing.

4 out of 5 stars A very nice biographical film.......2006-01-03

This review is for the Criterion Collection DVD edition of the film.

"An Angel at My Table" is a film based on the autobiographies of the famous New Zealand writer, Janet Frame. It begins with her as a toddler and moves to her in elementary school, as a teenager, and her adulthood.

It is a nice movie and has great scenes of New Zealand. The film has good acting in it and is well photographed.

There are some good bonus features too.

Audio commentary by director Jane Campion, actress Kerry Fox, and cinematographer, Stuart Dryburgh, Six deleted scenes, a theatrical trailer a documentary on the film's production, a stills gallery, and an audio interview with Janet Frame.

This is a must see for those interested in Janet Frame.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful film.......2004-08-24

This movie is wonderfully filmed and has a heart wrenching story. I recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars A Gun at My Temple...........2004-02-11

This movie is, technically, a very good movie. Janet Frame's disturbing story deserves to be told, and Campion is the woman to tell it.

I gave it three stars because--by virtue of its subject--it is REALLY DEPRESSING. Do NOT watch this movie if you are feeling at all emotionally fragile or if you have had a bad day. Rent a musical instead. On the other hand, you could have a Lobotomy Film Festival and rent this and the movie FRANCES (and, for that matter, Frankenstein).

Janet Frame's story is a series of disturbing, painful, traumatic and scary events. It is compelling to watch her go through all of this, but then, instant replays of racetrack crashes are compelling, too.

Some possible sequel titles are: A Noose Around My Neck, A Razor at My Wrist, 500 Valium and a Glass of Water at My Bedside Table...you get my drift.

It is amazing that, despite all her challenges, Frame did follow her dream and became a well-known writer. So in that sense, it's inspiring. I wish I had been more familiar with her writing before I watched this movie, and actually, I will probably watch it again after I read some of her work.

2 out of 5 stars An expensive home movie........2007-03-25

Video quality of this DVD was extremely poor. The lighting was off, stagnant photography, and wonderfully grainy. This should have been a promotional free-bee for the Cairns area. You should have to pay the $3.95 S&H fee and be done with it. Appears a rental car group was in the production of this DVD but there were no obvious references to any car renting. Marginally informative on the Cairns area and attractions.
