5 out of 5 stars Straight From the Heart.......2007-06-10

I love these kinds of movies. It touched my heart. It is a very good movie. I would recommend it to romantics.

5 out of 5 stars I actually really loved this movie.......2007-06-07

Usually I find these kinda movies hard to sit through because they are so cheesy..but even with the fluff I thought it was great..liked the underlying attraction between Tyler and Jordan from the start and then it turned into something more as the movie progresses. Plus the fact that Andrew McCarthy was in it..he looked hot as a cowboy!

4 out of 5 stars For horse lovers and more.......2007-03-20

First of all, let me say that this movie is a must for horse lovers. The shots of the western scenery and wild horses are truly awesome. The story is sweet even if somewhat predictable. I look for movies that are family friendly and this one gets my approval.

4 out of 5 stars Really enjoyed this movie!.......2007-03-19

My husband and I both enjoyed this movie. It has some great scenery. It also has some good morals such as relationships being more important than glamorous high paying jobs, forgiveness etc. There was also good chemistry between the main characters.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Movie.......2007-03-13

I don't watch much television but luckily I caught this movie on Hallmark. After watching, I bought the movie. I love everything about it, the actors, scenery, plot, and the music. Andrew McCarthy is a handsome fantastic actor; those blue eyes are hypnotic; I wish I could see more on him on Hallmark. Teri Polo is so beautiful; I love her facial expressions. Even though there are no blatant love scenes, there was a definite attraction between the two, especially in the dance scene, the barn scene with the blanket wrap, and the ending with the bride price. I just love the story and the subtle yet striking attraction between Tyler and Jordan. Great movie; one to keep to watch over and over.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant must-have collection!.......2007-07-05

Last year 2006, a local channel here in Manila, Philippines aired this series in our local tagalog dialect with local host and titled it "Hayop Na Hayop (great animals)." Unfortunately the tv series ended. However, my 6-yr old son Diego Miguel can't get enough of it and still hopes to catch it again on tv. Good thing I searched this title here at Amazon and upon reading the great reviews decided to do my first purchase in Amazon!

I am so excited when it arrived (well upon paying almost the same amount of duties and taxes here) and surprised my son with this box collection!

He was so happy!!!

Now the whole family is enjoying this brilliant collection! I highly recommend WALKING WITH DINOSAUR COLLECTION to everyone!!!

Thanks Amazon!

5 out of 5 stars Journey Through Time.......2007-06-06

Imagine that you could move back in time. With "The Complete Walking With... Collection", you can! The Journey starts with the first dinosaurs in a struggle to survive a brutal desert. Then you travel ahead to the Jurassic, where you follow the life of a baby sauropod, or "longneck" for fans of "The Land Before Time" movies, and explore the vast ancient seas. Then, it's on ahead to the Cretaceous, where you with fly with pterosaurs, or "flyers", survive a harsh winter in the South Pole forests, and see the dinosaurs go extinct when a comet hits the Earth. But the journey is far from over. Now you follow the lives of the creatures that lived after the dinosaurs. You will see a forest ruled by a giant killer bird, a giant whale try to survive pregnancy, a baby giraffe-like rhino survive his first few years, the apes that will evolve into humans try to survive in the savannah, a saber-tooth cat fight for his home, and a herd of Woolly Mammoths travel to greener pastures for the winter. If you love dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures, then this series can't be beat! Buy now and enjoy it for years to come!
NOTE: Creationists SHOULD NOT watch! Also, the title is misleading. There is "Walking With Monsters", the story of life before the dinosaurs. This is another good one and you should buy it to truly have the COMPLETE Walking With... Collection.

5 out of 5 stars Walking with.............2007-03-09

Priceless. Watch them over and over, you'll learn more and more. Kids can watch too.

5 out of 5 stars Learning about dinosaurs made fun.......2007-03-09

My children love to learn about everything. They want to know how it works, where it came from, how big were the dinosaurs and what creatures are in the ocean so this worked well for us. My daughter is learning about dinosaurs in school and had to do a report on diplodocus with three different sources. It was fun to read all the books but being able to sit down and watch the movie was great. It brought everything to life for my children. My son is starting a dinosaur segment in preschool and is already excited to tell his teacher about what he learned from the movie. We spread it out over a few days and watched it after dinner as a family. The children got to watch a movie and learned a lot in the process. We are looking for more sets like this one to add to our collection.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible, fun, and educational...but not for everyone........2006-12-02

I was throughly entertained by this series. Being a dinosaur fan, I loved this. I haven't seen it in a while, but from what I remember it walked through each phase of the the dinosaurs life on the planet from Triassic, Jurrassic, Cretaceous, going through dinosaurs that you may never heard of, how the lived, died, survived, preyed on each other, etc.

It's not for everyone. I can see someone with a slight passing interest in dinosaurs and the period enjoying fifteen minutes or so then becoming bored, so I say rent it first through Netflix because I haven't seen reruns of it in a while.

Dinosaur fans should very much enjoy, and even kids should like it because there are computerize images with the voice overs and while it is educational they should learn something about each species and each period, not just Jurassic because of "Jurassic Park" Very well done, I recommend.

1 out of 5 stars this movie was not that great.......2007-06-26

this movie was not some of their best work. It was probably fantastic twenty years ago, but it left a lot to be desired these days. It was kind of bland, very dull, and just not something I would recommend.

4 out of 5 stars California History.......2007-06-09

This film shows the side of Californias history that no one wants to talk about. It makes you realize how important it is to hold on to our family culture, and history no matter what your background. This is a film anyone who lives in California, or anywhere for that matter should watch.

5 out of 5 stars Praise for "Last of His Tribe".......2007-03-31

I remember first seeing this as a play when I was about 10 years old performend by a community theater group. It was so powerful, the story stuck with me for years. The movie is also powerful, and allows the viewer to see the perspective and dilemnas that anthropologists faced (and still face), and also allows the viewer to see Ishi's perspective and world view.

Another good film is the documentary, "Ishi, Last of the Yahi". Both are great for older kids (middle school and up) studying US or California history.

5 out of 5 stars Last of His Tribe -- DVD.......2007-03-20

All received in good timing and good price. Very pleased.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Movie.......2006-11-09

This movie has great historical value, especially for the State of California. The story of Ishi is one everyone should know. He was the LAst of His Tribe and just came walking out of the bush one day. No one even thought there was any of his tribe left and he taught us all a great deal about a people that had been wiped of the face of the earth. The acting in this movie was great and if you are a fan of Ishi then this is definately a movie you want to see. If you are a fan of History, see it as well.

Presented by the producers of Private Benjamin, Cadet Kelly is the story of a young teenage girl's dilemma when her life of free-spirited creativity and unmasked familial love collides with a world of extreme military discipline and reserve. Kelly Collins, played by Hilary Duff, is a happy student at New York Middle School of the Arts whose whole world changes dramatically when her mother marries an army captain who's just been promoted to Commandant at George Washington Military Academy. Thrust into a rigid world of obedience that frowns upon creativity and individuality, Kelly manages to make one close friend, but clashes with Cadet Captain Stone (Christy Carlson Romano) and is eventually court-martialed. Sentenced to maintain the equipment for the drill team, Kelly's disdain for the team suddenly evaporates when she glimpses the beauty and creativity involved in their precise maneuvers. Eventually, Kelly experiences significant personal growth, finds an outlet for her creativity, and begins to forge an important connection with her new stepfather. DVD extras include commentary by Christy Carlson Romano and Aimee Garcia, a "learning the drills" segment with Hilary Duff and Christy Carlson Romano, a "drill team challenge" interactive game that will have viewers doing everything from lacing up a boot to deciphering military time, and a DVD-ROM party planner. (Ages 6 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

Description

Hilary Duff stars as Kelly Collins, an artistic, fashion-minded teen who's forced to go from flashy fab to olive drab at her new stepdad's military academy in this delightful comedy. As the clumsiest, most clueless recruit ever to botch basic training, Kelly seems to be fighting an uphill battle to fit in. But it's all-out war when she butts heads with Cadet Captain Stone (Christy Carlson Romano), a tough-as-nails, by the book "commanding officer" determined to break her spirit. See how once-carefree Kelly keeps it together amidst endless rules and regulations to win Stone's respect, and still manages to leave her own unique mark on the school.

4 out of 5 stars Way better than I thought.......2007-02-14

This movie starring Hilary Duff is old but well done if a simple plot that are often in Hiliary's movies. The Guy gets the Girl in a military school. Good acting by her Female /Student Seargant and the Commander/Stepfather. Again not much too it but better than I thought. Well done Hilary Duff.

1 out of 5 stars this movie is full of maggots.......2006-12-23

This has got to be the worst movie ever made! Christy Carlson Romano plays a drill sergeant who picks on Hilary Duff's character because she's a spoiled brat AND has a crush on Christy's boyfriend. After lots of trials and tribulations they magically become best friends because they can both twirl ribbons *really* well. I would have given this movie "0 stars" if there had been the option. Save yourself. Don't see it, and certainly don't buy it.

1 out of 5 stars Cutesy...way too cutesy.......2006-08-28

Hilary Duff, usually a perfectly okay actress, really sucks doggy doo-doo in this midstream Lizzie McGuire performance. Christy Carlson Romano, Even Stevens veteran, is also an equally awesome actress, but isn't exactly up-to-par in this movie.

Hilary plays some ditzy teenager named (shockingly) Kelly who goes to military school on the order of her mother and new stepfather (Michael Douglas? Who is THAT?). Kelly, a fashionista at heart, is bunked with too-harsh, too-tough Christy (forget her characters name...LOL.)

The whole plot is like cereal left in milk for too long. She joins the drill team, led by way-too-adorable, pre-Zac Efronish kinda guy. At the end? OMG, we better add a little tragedy to balance out all the ditziness and harshness!

But, hey. Soggy cereal is better than no cereal.

5 out of 5 stars I Love this movie !!.......2006-07-30

Hilary and Christy R so Great This is a must C !!! I know All the family will love this !!

5 out of 5 stars Awsome movie! I have wathed it a lot........2006-03-30

I love this movie the first time I sall the advertisement i knew i had to watch it. Hilary Duff (My favorite singer and actor)Plays a girl living in new York with her divorced mom. She soon finds out that her mom is marrying , and she has to go to military school .When she get there a leader for the drill team (Christy Carlson Romano) is her bunk mate . Hilary hates the drill team, and christy, when later she chooses to join and helps the team win. .almost. But before her team wins her father goes missing and she has to save him. An awesome movie. great acting and good music. A good movie for all ages.

Teri Polo (Meet the Parents) and Andrew McCarthy (Mannequin) star as New York photographer Jordan Donovan and Wyoming cattleman Tyler Ross, an unlikely pair apparently mismatched through a singles ad. She's stuck in a dead-end relationship with Edward Morgan (Greg Evigan), who's afraid to commit, and he's being hounded by his engaged sister, Laurie Woods (Patricia Kalember), to find somebody and settle down. When Jordan's friend Carla Dimaggio (Christine Tucci) answers the Country Connections ad on her behalf, she flies out to Wyoming to meet Tyler, and at first the only thing they seem to have in common is dislike. But after learning about the first wife who died in childbirth, Jordan begins to see Tyler in a different light.

5 out of 5 stars Just as described.......2007-06-13

Item was very nice. The different themes are great for the price. I actually purchased the DVD for the fireplace scene. I am glad that I didn't buy a DVD of the fireplace scenes only, because I now have the option for holiday scenes and such.

Great buy.

5 out of 5 stars Something for everyone.......2007-05-31

Twenty different screens to choose from for every mood and moment. It's a nice to have at work late at night to help time pass. There's Seasonal, Novelties and Party Views. I found things in each that I like and for the money you really cannot go wrong with getting this dvd. (Each selection loops btw)

5 out of 5 stars Just the fireplace..no frilly xtras..no frou-frou music.......2007-05-28

This is exactly what I was looking for. No goofy stuff, just a crackling fire grate & logs, and a bonus..I like the lava screen/Asian inspired track! The crazy "microwave pizza" and "drying laundry" are also fun at times. Dvd came in a timely fashion and in very good condition.

5 out of 5 stars Best fireplace I've found.......2007-05-07

The fireplace shot in this dvd is actually far superior to the Ambient Fire dvd! It is a real wood fire with nice dry wood so it snaps and pops now and again like a good fire will. And unlike the other one, this fire loops every five minutes so the fire never dies down. It has a nice even quality, not too bright and roaring at the start, not too low and dying at the end.

There is a snow scene in here that is also very nice. It does look like it was done on a computer, but even so the snow falling on the trees is pleasing to look at.

5 out of 5 stars Fun Fireplace.......2007-02-17

I got this disk for the fireplace. Great sound effects and picture. I'm enjoying it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Russian Tradition.......2006-06-20

The Irony of Fate, or Enjoy Your Bath is a pretty old movie, though every year on the morning on New Year's Eve it's on Russian TV. This movie is a Russian tradition. It's very warming and funny. Of course, it's not a life situation, but it's a great movie. Worth watching.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2006-05-19

My Russian language professor showed us this movie just before Christmas break several years ago. It was a poor VHS of a VHS copied who knows how many times. Even after only three semesters of the course, enough of the film was understandable to be quite funny. Since that time, I've learned a bit more of the language, and best of all, Image Entertainment has added subtitles in several different languages including Russian and English. Over the years this movie has become a New Years tradition way more enjoyable than "It's a Wonderful Life." This movie is emotionally compelling and absolutely hilarious. This movie transcends Soviet Comedy to be one of the best films of all time.

It's important to note that Image Entertainment has again put a lot of excellent work into this edition. The audio/video quality is excellent as always. The menu page can be in English or Russian, and subtitles are in several languages.

5 out of 5 stars a classic.......2006-03-25

I love this movie. Incredible poetry, depth, acting, songs, music.. It's a Russian staple of "It's a Wonderful Life" stature, except much more moving and powerful. Give it a try!

5 out of 5 stars An inseparable part of a Russian New Years!.......2006-01-13

This movie was first aired on dec 31 in 1975. The second part was shown on jan 1 in 1976. The next day people could not stop talking about this movie. Nadya's orange dress rocked Russian women's world. Thirty years later everyone still talks about this movie. It is the "Christmas Storie" for Russians. Eldar Ryazanov, the director, did a superb job with costumes, decorations and actors.

A bit about the film: Ryazanov wasn't sure if the script would be approved for filming by the Committee of Culture of USSR, so he made it into a play at first because it was easier to get approval for plays. Once the permission was obtained, he easily got an approval for the movie. Then came an extensive search for the actors. Someone proposed Andrei Mironov (a Russian sex-symbol and a great actor/singer/dancer) for the part of Ippolit, but Ryazanov felt that no woman would leave Mironov, no matter how negatively he portrayed his character (Mironov was THAT loved by Russian women). Thus Ryazanov picked Yakovlev for that part. Barbara Brylska was a star of Polish Cinema and a perfect match for the role of Nadya, but spoke Russian with a heavy accent. To solve the problem, Valentina Talyzina (who plays one of Nadya's friends in the movie) dubbed her part completely. The hardest part was in finding the actor to play Zhenya. After a long search that gave no result, someone advised Ryazanov to see a play where a young man by the name Andrei Myagkov played a drunk man. After the play was over, Ryazanov handed him the role.
The songs are sang by Alla Pugacheva and Sergei Nikitin - beloved Russian singers and songwriters. Poems by Pasternak, Akhmadulina, Akhmatova, and (one of the most tender and beautiful poems read at the end) Kochetkov make this film beautiful, lyrical and complete. I have not yet met a Russian who does not like this film. All Americans who watched this film loved it, too.

You will enjoy watching this film no matter if you are Russian or not.

5 out of 5 stars A glimpse into Russian culture.......2005-12-27

We watched this movie in a highly experiential Russian language class where it is an especially good fit. Not only is the movie thoughtful and funny but the nuances of the streets, the apartments, the blocks, the locks!! I bought this movie for me for New Year's Eve and gave DVDs as gifts to my friends who've been to Russia. Da. Get this movie!

The life of an English schoolmaster may sound like dry stuff, but To Serve Them All My Days finds engrossing drama and dry wit in the most ordinary of circumstances. David Powlett-Jones (John Duttine), a young Welshman, returns from the trenches of World War I disillusioned and suffering from shellshock. Accepted as a teacher at an elite boy's boarding school called Bamfylde, Powlett-Jones fears he won't last--but the faith of the headmaster who hired him (Frank Middlemass) proves well-founded. Powlett-Jones immediately flies in the face of convention, fighting with a pompous science teacher (Neil Stacy), speaking out in favor of socialist reforms, and finding a mixture of discipline and empathy with the boys he teaches. Over the course of his 20-year rise through the ranks of Bamfylde, he finds and loses love with several women (Belinda Lang, Kim Braden, and Susan Jameson); one of the greatest strengths of To Serve Them All My Days is how fully realized these women are, each strikingly individual and self-directed.

The writing and acting are impeccable, always cutting to the most engaging aspect of every scene, yet grounding every conflict in a rich understanding of character and circumstance. Even the minor characters are made vivid and distinct, and the realities of life--politics, sex, mortality--are handled frankly and honestly. In fact, To Serve Them All My Days demonstrates the best aspects of a miniseries, taking the scope of 13 episodes to map in detail a human life, with all its victories and disasters. Truly a pleasure to watch; of particular note is Alan MacNaughtan as a sardonic fellow teacher, whose ironic observations and close friendship with Powlett-Jones give the series a good dose of both humor and compassion. Based on the classic novel by R.F. Delderfield. --Bret Fetzer

Description

After barely surviving the trenches of World War I, an embittered young soldier takes a teaching post at Bamfylde, an elite boarding school in the uplands of West Devon. It is an unlikely job for a Welsh miner's son without a degree, but David Powlett-Jones (John Duttine) proves to be a rare schoolmaster, as passionate about learning as he is about teaching. Through two tumultuous decades, Powlett-Jones inspires his students with his courage and idealism, qualities that help prepare him to send another generation of young men off to fight yet another war. A beloved PBS Masterpiece Theatre classic adapted by Andrew Davies (Pride and Prejudice, Bridget Jones's Diary) from the novel by R. F. Delderfield.

5 out of 5 stars Riviting Mini-Series.......2007-05-28

The mini-series, "To Serve Them All My Days," kept our attention so well that we finished the four DVDs without realizing the time had gone by! It is well worth the money we spent!

5 out of 5 stars Great Story Telling.......2007-04-12

I saw "To Serve Them All My Days" when it was first broadcast on Masterpiece Theater and I have never forgotten the series, so I was very pleased to see that it was released on DVD. The story has been nicely related by other reviewers so I will concentrate on the wonderful performances. John Duttine is marvelous as David Powlett-Jones; his range and depth of emotion are perfectly portrayed in a role that must have been very demanding. Frank Middlemass makes Algy Herries a beloved Headmaster; gregarious, open and unflappable but very serious when he has to be. We are quite sorry when he "retires" as Headmaster but are glad that he does not entirely leave the story. Neil Stacy is excellent as Carter, a character that I could loath and find some sympathy and understanding for.

The women in David Powlett-Jones' life are certainly fascinating and charming. Belinda Lang was truly wonderful as his first wife, Beth. She played the role with particular sweetness tempered by good humor and good sense; Kim Barden made quite a seductive Julia Derbyshire and Susan Jameson made a troubled would-be politician and lover for Powlett-Jones.

I recall that Alistair Cooke had warm praise for Charles Kay who turned in a perfect performance as Alcock, the icy Headmaster who succeeds Algy Herries. Alan MacNaughton was a delight as Howarth, who may have had a bleak outlook on life but was a solid friend to David Powlett-Jones.

Having come from a military boarding school founded along the lines of English boarding schools by an Episcopal minister, it was easy for me to recall events from my own education and compare the teachers of Bamfylde with ones that I was taught by. The series is so good because it is true to life and I would believe that R. F. Delderfield based his books on real people and events from his own experience. This is an unforgettable series that is well-acted and holds your interest throughout its 13 parts. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining, some subplots a little boring..........2007-04-11

David Powlett-Jones is a Welsh combat vet discharged with shell shock. Hired to teach school at an elite boarding school, David finds himself mired in a culture he despises: that of the wealthy social elite. Soon however, David becomes enamored with the school and teaching and chooses to stay.

David's life is an interesting one, though at times some sub plots were more interesting to this viewer than others. David's persecution at the hands of the evil South African headmaster went on a little long. Likewise, I found his last romantic interest tedious. She seemed a selfish character who used David as a crutch. I found myself disliking her intensely.

Overall, I enjoyed the series and felt it could've benefited from a few more episodes. 4 stars.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Story.......2007-02-18

This is a story about a shell-shocked soldier, David Powlett-Jones who returns home from the First World War, and finds his healing and restoration while teaching at an English boarding school for boys called Bamfylde. The story is derived from the novel by R. F. Delderfield with the same title as the film, To Serve Them All My Days. It is a hopeful and encouraging story which sweeps across the years from the final days of the First World War to the approach of the Second World War. Many discouragements and even tragedy plague the years, but the general trend is upward and encouraging.

This is a film series that I had waited a long time to see. I had read the book, To Serve Them All My Days twice, the second time just before seeing the film version. By and large I thought the film version was quite well done. The adult characters are well developed as they are in Delderfield's writing. Many of the individual schoolboy characters are slighted somewhat in the film, however. The story flows well from episode to episode as it apparently was presented on television.

The DVD version is about eleven hours long on four DVDs. In shorter films derived from written stories, one can understand leaving some significant things out. I felt, however, that there were too many exclusions in the film version of To Serve Them All My Days which was plenty long enough to take into account important elements of Delderfield's original story. In that sense I was quite disappointed. I felt the film makers deleted too many of the stories about the individual schoolboys which give the written story reality and life. Plus, the entire aspect of the story based on the survival and recovery of Powlett-Jones' young daughter, Grace, who in the book lives through the accident in which Powlett-Jones first wife and Grace's twin sister Joan were killed. I use the word "aspect" because Grace figures very prominently through much of the story as Delderfield originally told it, partnering with her father from a very young age and aided in her recovery by two of the Bamfylde schoolboys in particular, and finally joining her father as a secretary. When such a major aspect of a story is removed the story becomes something different. A bit less of Powlett-Jones love life and common room discussions, and the inclusion of Grace's recovery, and more of the stories about the boys he served all his days would, in my opinion, have raised the film to a level of excellence.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-01-04

This is an excellent version of the book. The main characters and the supporting are very well cast and continue to be a pleasure to watch.

Description

From acclaimed director, Chris Eyre, whom People Magazine calls "…the preeminent Native American filmmaker of his time" comes this touching and inspirational story about loyalty, friendship and courage. New man in town Kenny Williams (James McDaniel) has just accepted a position as an English professor at the Three Nations Reservation in Utah. Finding it hard to fit in with the tight-knit Native American community, he decides to take on the challenge of coaching the high school girls' basketball team.

5 out of 5 stars English teach to Coach!.......2007-02-12

When a black man is sent to the Res to teach English is rooked into becoming the coach for the girls basketball team. There are many ups and downs to this great movie. I can't say enough about the morals and lessons these girls learned from this tough man. It is a terrific movie. In the end, they are truly surprised. I very much reccommend this DVD!

5 out of 5 stars Racism in Reverse.......2006-07-11

The interesting aspect of this movie to me was the subtle racism between the Indians and the black teacher/coach, Kenny. Underlying it all, both sides really just wanted to be treated for themselves, but both sides had experienced racism toward their race or culture so they behaved as if they expected it. Kenny was used to being treated as a 'nigger' so he'd built up a shell that was difficult for the girls to penetrate. The Navajo girls also were used to being treated as 'mere Indians,' such as by the referees in their games, so they automatically felt like giving up. It was by talking out their feelings, openly and honestly, that both the coach and the team players were able to grow into more mature, successful people. Both sides made mistakes, but they seemed to learn from them with some pain ways to overcome their unconscious negative expectations. This is a a wonderful area of discussion for families; Everyone knows that they are not supposed to be 'racist' against others; but how does unconsciously expecting to be treated in a racist manner alter one's own perception of the world? How might that affect one's chances of becoming successful in their life?

4 out of 5 stars A Low Key But Powerful Treat.......2006-04-29

I saw this film on cable on a weekday afternoon, one of those films you will probably not catch otherwise: quirky subject, no big stars, no budget. The plot sounded interesting: black coach, played by the always solid James McDaniel (rarely seen, at least by me, since he left NYPD Blue), coaching a girls basketball team on a reservation. This could be gritty and important, I thought--or sappy and predicatable, another cliched tale of the underdog winning the big game. Pretty quickly it became clear that this was a gritty and realistic film. The coach is a complicated character, not always likeable, occassionally downright awful. The girls are equally realistically drawn. The conflicts we know to be present on Indian reservations around the country are not hidden: unemployment, poverty, alcoholism, bitterness, etc. Sound grim? Somehow this tiny film finds a way to present what could a grim, downbeat story as dramatic, moving, and even funny. Only later did I discover the director is Chris Eyre, a filmmaker with real and obvious talent (see Skins and Smoke Signals). So that this movie made us believe in the reality and humanity of its mostly Native characters is no surprise. This is not a perfect movie by any means. The rival school and its all blonde basketball team and obnoxious coach are cliched. More backround on McDanial's character would have helped. But given that, this is actually a stirring, moving film, an unlikely combination of Eyre's earlier Skins and Hoosiers. You end up caring deeply about these girls and their lives. The basketball scenes are exciting. (I won't give away the ending...just to say the girls indeed overcome many obstacles to go to the state championship). McDaniel is indeed interesting and believable as always (know him only from Blue? Check him out in Spike Lee's Malcom X). Wes Studi is equally interesting and believable. Heck, the whole cast is interesting and believable. This will literally make you laugh and make you cry, and the movie earns both emotions legitimately. Check it out.

4 out of 5 stars Great film for everyone!.......2006-03-08

Chris Eyre (Director Smoke Signals, Skins) dribbles us onto the hard court of Three Nations woman's Basketball. Kenny Williams (James McDaniel) is running from his past. He takes an English teaching position on the Three Nations Reservation in Utah. Unbeknownst to school administrators he is black man. This puts him as a mark for the native students.

Kenny needs some additional income so he thinks of coaching the dismal O'fer Lady Warrior's basketball team. The interim coach Annie (Irene Bedard) is more of a mother than a coach. The local do-it-all Cuch (Wes Studi) convinces Kenny to coach the woman's basketball team. Coach Williams soon learns that he is fighting an uphill battle with teamwork and Native family traditions especially Mother Tsosie. (Geraldine Keams)

I absolutely adored this film and totally related to this film. The woman's balling at my old all Native high school was just as competitive with the more expensed mostly white high schools. The gym, attendance and excitement took me back to the days of playing ball for the love of it and close-knit teammates.

I try not to be a nit pick on an overall good film, but the film started off with some shaky camera angles following Kenny to the Three Nations reservation. (Personal preference) It was probably due to the handheld cameras. After a few minutes it disappeared. Filming the basketball action was comparable to other basketball films that I have seen. But I wished I would have seen the free throws.

Carla (Delanni Studi), Shirleen (Misty Upham) and Marissa (Deanna Allison) are some of the talented actresses that make up the basketball team. Leroy McKinney (Tim Daly/Producer) is the father of Carla who struggles with the loss of his wife. And the angry, outspoken Franklin (Eddie Spears) is Carla's boyfriend plays his character outstanding. This film contains a lot of talented Native actors who are now more popular since filming.

This film was filmed in 2002 for Showtime. Maybe it's just me but these films need to get released to the general public faster. Though, money is always at the root of the problem. I have to give kudos to Annie Humphrey's songs that fit perfectly for this film.

Purchase this DVD for the entire family. There are not many extras on the DVD, but there is a filmography for the main actors.

4 out of 5 stars "Did You Know The Basketball Is Round Just Like Mother Earth?" - Learning That Imperfection Is Beauty.......2006-03-06

Can an uptight, black high school teacher make a difference teaching dis-illusioned Native American high school students at Three Nations Reservation? He will if he's successful transforming the girls basketball team from perennial doormats/losers to a hard working, fastbreaking team of winners.

A insightful look into modern day life and times on the Reservation courtesy of director Chris Eyre. James McDaniel gives a solid perfomance as Kenny Williams, the new teacher and coach. Irene Bedard is as always beautiful as the previous coach and mentor to coach Williams. Also excellent supporting role by Wes Studi.

While 'Edge of America' doesn't rank up there with other sports films like 'Rudi' or 'Saint Ralph' it's still a heartwarming story and a wonderful way to spend an evening with the family!

Description

On the day of his marriage to Princess Gwendolyn, Prince John finds himself in a compromising situation with a damsel in distress. As punishment, he and his squire, Rodney (Martin Short), are subjected to a "frogging," transforming them into frogs for all eternity, or until the prince can convince a maiden not only to kiss him but also marry him. After centuries on the pond, John and Rodney are accidentally transported to New York's Central Park and an amazing new world full of taxis, skyscrapers, graffiti and-of course-damsels. In no time at all, the prince gets his kiss and he and Rodney return to human form. But staying that way won't be easy. It's streetwise Kate (Christina Applegate) who has captured John's heart, but, unfortunately, she's not the woman he kissed. In order to break the curse forever, he must convince Margo (Bernadette Peters), a Broadway diva, to marry him.

2 out of 5 stars Some of you 5 stars are kidding, right?.......2006-12-09

I saw this as a Hallmark Special and haven't bought this on DVD and never will. They say it's meant for children, but there's no way I'm about to show this to any group of kids. Yeah, it's a fairy tale, but the least the writers could have done was figure out a more clever child friendly/adult saavy way to to address how the prince became a frog rather than the raunchy oversexed prince thing. And boy was he oversexed. Well, at least that question got answered by this movie. It's as if the writers couldn't decide who their target audience is supposed to be. So we end up with characters who insult their audience's intelligence with a plot that loses itself so it leaves the audience with a copped out ending. The actors were great, but I wish it had been written much better than it was.

5 out of 5 stars So much fun!.......2005-12-28

I brought this DVD over for a Christmas family sleep-over party. We ranged in age from 9 to 80+! Without a doubt, everyone was delighted by this movie and several people planned on purchasing their own copies later on. The entire cast was wonderful, and the costumes were great! Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars This Is A Delightful Movie For Young And Old!!!.......2005-07-29

In this movie we see Prince Charming and his sidekick played by Martin Short who are sentenced to a "frogging" in Medieval England. One soon learns that they should have chosen a flogging instead. As an aside I have heard that some guys are "into" that sort of thing. Prince Charming and his friend end up in Modern Day New York where they get a horse and carriage ride with Christina Applegate who is a delight to watch as always. Christina thinks that these two are a couple of eccentric losers because of their continual reference to Central Park as being "Cental Forest" which is a funny joke in itself. However she soon changes her mind when the Prince pays her with a very valuable Antique coin. This movie is a gem for young and old and I believe I have too much class to attack another reviewer's opinion of this movie.

2 out of 5 stars Bad taste spoils a good movie.......2005-06-21

Within the first 10 minutes, Prince Charming had gone to bed with one young girl he had just met the night before, then was having sex with another he had just met mere SECONDS before! Reviewer David Birley clearly has no clue what he's talking about when he says "no 7 year old would ever "get" what was "going on" because of the extremely (and delightfully) clever way in which this was handled." I watched it with my 7-year-old and was very uncomfortable. What's so clever about a woman practically bursting out of her top, then dropping her skirts to the floor to show her completely bare legs as the "Prince" hoists her up against the bell? Maybe my daughter is just smarter than his, but I think ANYONE could figure out that scene. And it's a shame because this was otherwise a good movie with great period costumes and overall pretty good acting. My advice to parents is to watch it yourself first, then decide. I guess that's what we have to do with everything nowadays.

5 out of 5 stars Charming in the old fashioned way!.......2004-10-31

There was a time when fairy stories could only be told in Disney cartoons. There was Snow White, and Cinderella, and they had their requisite combination of magic and "lived happily ever after". "Real" people portrayed in movies could not, somehow, be presented that way -- it just didn't "work".

Then somewhere along the road a film called Pretty Woman figured out one way to do it with a PG13 rating, and Rob Reiner kicked it up (and down) a notch with The Princess Bride where the fairy story element became more as we remember as little children. Andre the Giant was a real giant, and who can forget Billy Crystal as the crone?

So Disney took another whack at it, and the Princess Diaries came along, and the fairy story worked some more. And we loved them, and they were family fare, and we watched them with our kids!

I saw Prince Charming at an unearthly early hour in Phoenix Arizona when my body was still on South Carolina time, and immediately fell in love with it. It has that same true fairy story quality about it -- a bit of cinematic froth with just enough believability to keep you drawn in to the characters.

Martin Short holds the entire package together, and is utterly in his element with the opportunity to take his Canadian origins out for a run with a flawless English accent and delivery throughout. Christina Appleton may have been a bit of an also-ran ditz in Married with Children, but here she shows some delicious emotional depth that carries us beyond the fundamental froth of the plot. Bernadette Peters uses every ounce of her Broadway chops to play a jaded diva just to the edge of over playing without quite tipping over -- mastery of her craft. The young man who plays the prince is new to me, but fits the role perfectly, an expert swordsman, and clearly the director decided to take every opportunity to show that off -- smart move.

Now I note that one reviewer decries some implied sexuality in the plot and presentation. May I assure one and all that no 7 year old would ever "get" what was "going on" because of the extremely (and delightfully) clever way in which this was handled. The "bell" scene mentioned is at once hilarious, and essential to the understanding of the character of the prince, and to the core of the plot. How I would dearly wish that Hollywood would understand that "sex scenes" do not require the depiction of either nudity nor sex to get the point across to adults without corrupting the minds of children.

I intend to buy this DVD and keep it on hand to play for my grandchildren when they visit. It will also be available for my Bishop's children to see (I am LDS), and others who share my rather conservative feelings about film content.

I consider this to be one of the most delightful and charming films I have seen in years.
