Our church showed this movie in the mid '70's. Several years ago I was able to 'win' a copy (VHS) on e-bay. When the DVD came out I HAD to have one. Wonder when or if they will re-release the "soundtrack" on CD? I have it on vinyl. (NO record player now)

Johnny Cash takes the truth of Christ's life and death and makes a very sensitive and touching movie that is bound to draw people to the person, Jesus Christ,the only thing that makes sense in this sad and lonely world.

The film is very moving and can be given an excellent for the story. As it was filmed in the 1970's the pictures are a little wierd compared to what we used to seeing in today's cinema but the film is still a good one.

4 out of 5 stars Surreal Johnny Cash Art Flick Twist to the Jesus Story..........2006-11-25

This is one strange dramatization of the story of Jesus as narrated by Johnny Cash in his down home, ever cool style, walking along the Galilee or perched atop a high cliff, Bible in hand. Two prominent themes of this Cash version are (1) that Jesus died for all people of all time (especially brought home in the startling crucifixion scene), and (2) that Jesus' journey was very solitary--even when he was amidst crowds. There are very few actors in the film, and even crowd scenes, such as Jesus entering Jerusalem on the donkey, sometimes have no people at all, though they may have a mob of voices heard but not seen.

Those who are sticklers to Biblical chronology and precision, probably would not like this movie, since it employs quite a bit of artistic license and some doubtful interpretations or statements. Also, the movie is weak as an evangelistic film, as it emphasizes the nice, inoffensive pitiable side of Jesus, his healing ministry, love for children, and so on, and largely (but not entirely) skips over sin, need of repentance, repeated confrontation with the Jewish religious leaders, and so on.

Except for brief words from John the Baptist, only Mary Magdalene, played by June Cash, southern accent and all, has a speaking part. The bright blond hair and blue eyes of Jesus are striking, but as the movie obviously doesn't attempt to give a realistic interpretation, those physical qualities only made Jesus stand out in an even more other worldly way apart from his dark-haired disciples, again heightening his separateness, uniqueness. The movie's pace is very laid back, with many scenes of the Sea of Galilee, naked Judean hills (again the aloneness motif), Jordan River, or Galilean hills. The country music adds a nice touch as does Cash's friendly voice.

Because of its uniquenes and artistic liberties, I'm hesitant to recommend it for everyone, but I liked it, if only for the poignant crucifixion scene.

I'm happy this old brilliant movie is available on DVD now. I don't know how many times I watched it yars ago with my youth groupes, and we had chilles every time because it's a gospel narration so touching and profound, and I haven't seen a Jesus character portrayed so close to human reality in another gospel movie. Thanks for this DVD edition.

4 out of 5 stars Our kids love it -- but where are the "actions"?.......2005-05-01

Our 20-month-old and 4.5-year-old love this video that contains many of the favorite Bible songs I remember from my childhood. The music and singing is good quality, and the scenes behind the music are interesting -- children playing, acting out some of the words, like rock climbing during "Climb up Sunshine Mountain" -- even a farm full of animals during the Noah song.

Unfortunately, only a few of the songs feature all of the actions (hand motions and body movement) that make these songs favorites for children. It's such a shame, because the primary reason I bought this DVD was to encourage full-body participation and movement instead of passive viewing.

Still, the production is good-quality (not overproduced and grating like the DVD of the same name by Golden Books). When our kids leave it on and walk away, it actually makes decent background music, as children's music goes.

To be sure, this is the best children's music DVD we own (yes, even more popular with our kids than the Wiggles) -- that is, until we find a DVD of action Bible songs that actually features the actions.

We bought this dvd for viewing on a road trip but it has become a staple in our 2 year old's life. Not all of the songs have actual motions but there are children laughing and singing and moving around and she is enthralled. She sings along with the show but also sings them on her own throughout the day. We have more of the Cedarmont videos and I love the fact that they do not repeat songs on different videos.

My daughter has watched Miss Patty Cake Videos since she was about 3 months old. She has always sat and watched the entire thing every time. She is now 1 and she now claps and dances to the music. I would definately recommend any of her videos to anyone with children infants to at least 6 years old. Also if you are looking for more Christian videos I would also highly recommend the Donut Man (Rob Evans). He also has some great singing videos.

We LOVE Miss Patty Cake and this is the second DVD that we have. Our first was the Bible Sing a longs and it has the words at the bottom of the screen for busy moms to follow along so we can learn the words to help our children. I was VERY disappointed that this DVD doesn't have the words at the bottom nor does it offer subtitles. That is why it gets only 4 stars. But content, presentation, and subject is superior and is worth 5 stars. I do recommend this DVD regardless of the lack of subtitles.

My 2-year-old son loves Miss Patty Cake! She has such a great message, once you get used to the goofy-ness of her outfit, etc. ha :) Most of the songs on this video don't directly pertain to birthdays, but the overall theme is birthdays. We used it to help introduce the birthday concept before the big 2! We even played the birthday party parade segment during his party & the kids all marched around the house along with the video. It was great! :)

I have two little grandaughters, 1 1/2 & 3 years old. They absolutely love all Miss Patty Cake dvds. The oldest one grew up on Baby Einstein, which are great, but the youngest never cared much for those. However, she will sit glued to the Miss Patty Cake dvds. I don't know whether little boys will like them as well, but I see no reason why they would'nt.

Both of my children love this DVD. We have two other Miss Patty Cake DVDs and this one is just as great as the others. The songs and the message of Christ's love is presented in a very kid friendly way. It is high energy and lots of fun to watch.

    My two year old son absolutely loves this dvd and requests it over and over again! It really holds his attention and he knows every song by heart. It has also taught him so much about the true Easter story, which he repeats with understanding in his own words. What might initially seem like just another kids sing-song dvd really ends up being a sweet and well thought out effective message. We purchased this dvd along with the Resurrection Eggs from Family Life - an awesome combo & gift!

    We have several Miss PattyCake videos, but this is our very, very favorite. The story is engaging and the music is extremely catchy. Together, they make the story of Christ's resurrection come alive for your preschooler. Have you noticed that almost all children's Christian videos are about Old Testament heroes? Finally, here is one about the greatest hero in the Bible: Jesus!! The storyline is built around an Easter egg hunt. Inside each egg that the children find is an object that tells part of the real Easter story, ie. a donkey for the Triumphal Entry, praying hands for Jesus' Gethsemane experience, a cross for His death, a rock for the stone that was rolled away from the tomb, and, coolest of all, an empty egg for the empty tomb!!! The music is extremely well integrated into the storyline and makes learning the story of Jesus easy and exciting for young children. Our kids are 2 and 3 and can tell you all the facts of the passion and ressurection (within reasonable limits for preschoolers) because of this video. They run around singing about the "Mighty Resurrection Day" waving their arms and jumping up and down. It is fantastic!! We have several VeggieTales, DonutMan, and other Christian videos, but if I lost my house today this is the very first video I would replace for my kids. It is OUTSTANDING. Also highly recommended are the book "The Story of the Resurrection Eggs" by Miss PattyCake and, to really make the story come alive, the real set of Resurrection Eggs by Family Life (both are available at ChristianBook.com). Have fun!

    5 out of 5 stars An authentic, rousing, and fun telling of the story of Easter.......2006-02-11

    As a father of two small children, this is a wonderful way to teach the true meaning of Easter. It's told as a kind of unfolding puzzle, where one by one the children open their colorful eggs to find an object inside each one that reveals another part of the story. There is a series of songs throughout, many of which are quite catchy and have me finding myself and my children singing them long after the show is done.

    Being new to Ms. Patty Cake, at first I was struck by her excitement and enthusiasm, but after a few times you find she is really quite engaging and joyful, which is exactly what draws the children in and makes them feel welcomed and loved.

    It is well-suited to preschool-age children in that the pace varies between active, get-up-and-sing-and-dance segments to slower, more thoughtful times to listen and think more deeply about the Resurrection story.

    Highly recommended. Have fun!

    2 out of 5 stars too preachy and over the top.......2004-07-12

    I was initially excited by this video, but I discovered that it really did not teach the story of Easter very well, and it was a little too over the top. The singing was pretty good, but the preaching was way too much than I like for children.

    My children LOVE Mr. Henry. They have been listening to his tapes since they were 4 years old and have now gotten into the videos(they are six). Mr. Henry is very funny. Highly recommended.

    I just love Mr. Henry! He teaches valuable lessons in a very fun and entertaining way- kids of all ages AND adults are entertained and encouraged and reminded what is important.

    Video is clealy over heads of my 5 and 3 yr old. I would not purchase this for any child under 8-10yrs...and even then, doubtful. All conversation is spoken very fast and not with a child expressions, etc (ie Blue's Clues or other more typical child programming give verbal/non verbal expressions that are typical for children and good for them to model, etc). The examples are almost for 5-6 grade level. The choice of words, use of sarcastic questions, etc are also above them. The visitor and band members look/act and their expressions (verbal and non verbal) more like disgruntled workers than talent in a childs program. The video jumps without a consistent medium to ensure all know how each part relates to the other.

    I would return if I could...The video DOES have an advertisement about ANOTHER video on fear that has the voices of Tim Conway and Vicky Lawrence....I will look for it at my semi-local Christian store...good luck!!
