4 out of 5 stars Great value.......2005-07-22

You can't go wrong with this when the price is so low. The animation quality is like that typically seen in basic Saturday morning cartoons, which is good enough for kids. What I like is that all the videos in this series give all the important details of the story, rather than giving a shallow, watered-down version as is usually the case in children's stories. These will entertain preschoolers up through junior high and the script is very closely based on the scriptural account. The only reason I didn't give this series a 5 is that each video has a hokey song that could definitely have been left out, but for such a low price and good script, I can overlook that.

ORSON WELLES COLLECTION

In the history of cinema, Orson Welles was a larger-than-life figure - both literally and figuratively. His classic 1941 feature Citizen Kane is widely regarded as the greatest American film of all time, while his 1958 film Touch of Evil is often referred to as the greatest B-movie of all time.

But in and around those classics, Welles starred in or directed a number of films that showed off his astonishing range and versatility that included works based on such diverse sources as Franz Kafka, William Shakespeare, and the Bible. This five-DVD collection contains some of Welles' unjustly overlooked gems.

Included in this fascinating collection are THE STRANGER (1946), KING LEAR (1953), DAVID AND GOLIATH (1960), and THE TRIAL (1962). Plus, there's an ultra-rare live TV appearance by Welles on a 1956 Herb Shriner Show in which he recites poetry. In addition, two documentaries - Hollywood Remembers Orson Welles and Hollywood Couples: Orson Welles and Rita Hayworth - round out this terrific set. No fan of classic cinema should be without this important collection from The Master.

Disc One

THE STRANGER

After upsetting the studio executives with the arcane excesses of Citizen Kane and The Magnificent Ambersons, Welles set out to show RKO that he could make a movie that was on time, on budget, and that appealed to general audiences of the '40s.

This taut thriller, released in 1946, was the result. Welles, playing an escaped Nazi war criminal hiding out in a small Connecticut town, is ably assisted by a stellar supporting cast that includes Loretta Young as his naïve wife, Edward G. Robinson as his dogged pursuer, and Philip Merivale as the kindly judge.

95 minutes.

Disc Two

KING LEAR

Performed live in front of television cameras in 1953, Welles played the title role in this Shakespeare classic about a beleaguered king who is plagued by problems both political and personal. The impressive supporting cast includes Lloyd Bochner (The Twilight Zone), Beatrice Straight (Network), and Bramwell Fletcher (The Mummy). The music was provided by legendary Pulitzer-Prize-winning composer Virgil Thomson.

Variety referred to this production as "the most definitive Shakespearean work in terms of any show-biz media." Welles' performance was equally - and justifiably - praised.

76 minutes. Disc Three

DAVID AND GOLIATH

This colorful Biblical epoch was produced in Italy in 1960 under the title DAVID E GOLIA. Despite his size, Welles did not play the giant Philistine, Goliath. Instead, he played King Saul, who is informed by his prophets who tell him the new king of Israel will be a young boy name David.

David is played by Yugoslavian actor Ivica Pajer, who, more than twenty years later, played Meryl Streep's father in Sophie's Choice. Goliath was played by a genuine giant of an actor known only as Kronos.

95 minutes.

Disc Four

The Trial

Franz Kafka's classic political thriller came to the screen in 1962 written by, directed by, and starring Orson Welles as Albert Hastler, the attorney. The main character, known only as Josef K, awakens to find he is suddenly and inexplicably on trial for an unspecified crime, and is played to quirky perfection by Anthony Perkins (Psycho). Akim Tamiroff, who gave such a memorable performance as "Uncle Joe" Grandi in Touch of Evil, also lends his support.

Kafka, with his absurdist views and nightmarish visions, is not an easy author to translate for the silver screen, but Welles was clearly up to the task.

94 minutes.

Disc Five

The Herb Shriner Show

This ultra-rare episode of the famed humorist's talk show features Welles in lively conversation as well as reciting some Carl Sandburg poetry on live TV in 1956.

Hollywood Remembers Orson Welles

A fascinating look at the public and private life of this often misunderstood genius of the cinema, who gave us such classics as Citizen Kane and The Magnificent Ambersons, but had difficulty living up to his earlier successes as time progressed. Rare film clips, newsreels, and photos tell his story.

Hollywood Couples: Orson Welles and Rita Hayworth

Some saw them as the Genius and the Glamour Gal. Others preferred Beauty and the Beast. Either way, they were one of the least likely and most compelling couples ever to light up the Hollywood skies. This fascinating documentary, filled with film clips and rare footage, examines the private lives of this curious couple - he of the towering talent, she of the gorgeous gams.

4 out of 5 stars GOOD FOR THE KING LEAR ALONE, OKAY FOR THE TRIAL.......2006-08-27

This collection deserves to join your collection is only for being the best recorded King Lear. Welles is magnificent as Lear losing his powers and reason. It is the best work of Welles, directed by the great Peter Brooks, who incredibly presents an impossible ninety minute Lear.

THe second best King LEar ever is of course the James EArle Jones Joe Papp Shakespeare in the PArk presentation, which is a must-see. YOu may also find other favorite actors strutting about such as a very young and dashing Raul Julia, the subdued Paul Sorvino (except when his eyes get poked out- then we hear his operatic voice), and Rene D'auborjonois or whatever that you may remember from TV's BEnsen, Star TRek New GEneration (without his ears) and now Boston LEgal. But I go on about a very praiseworthy production on another DVD.

Here we see Welles in the fullness of his powers doing the best darn King LEar ever recorded, including Olivier's late kinder gentler production, or any other BBC production. It is worthy of multiple viewings.

Welles's serious ADAPTATION of Kafka's The TRial is probnably the best we shall ever see on film of that great novel, despite the alteration of the ending. The only other decent adaptation is by R. Crumb in his "introducing Kafka". But here Welles especially captures the young girls lurking about the artist's closet studio very well. Other elements of the play are well represented and worth studying along with the original novel kept ever at hand. Welles's aiming to push buttons of fear of nuclear war and other contemporary worries altered the novel, but it is worth seeing here.

As for the Stranger, as said here it is something Welles did for commercial success aimed at the concerns of the day. I feel this one is dated now, but it is nice to see the distinguished Mr. RObinson playing a good guy.

As for the rest, you are on your own. But having The Trial and King LEar are worth the price of admission, and will find replay on your system.

4 out of 5 stars An Interesting Assortment of Wellesiana.......2006-05-02

Obviously this isn't Citizen Kane or Ambersons or even Touch of Evil, but it's an interesting cross-section of Welles' work, some of which I'd never seen. Particularly scarce (I believe) is his guest appearance on the Herb Shriner TV Show in the Fifties. I hadn't seen that one. Also, I think they recalled the first batch and got rid of that red logo!

1 out of 5 stars If it sounds too good to be true..........2006-02-22

Avoid this collection at all costs.

This is yet another among the plethora of public domain releases haphazardly thrown together without any regard for the quality of presentation. The source materials for these films, as you might imagine, are remarkably awful. But Passport International couldn't stop at being just any other over-night public domain distribution scam. What makes this collection cross over from "horrible" to "hilarious travesty" is that a red logo is at the bottom of every frame. I kid you not. The bottom of every hazy, warped, mutilated, vinegar-soaked frame.

3 out of 5 stars Decent, But Not an Epic........2006-10-24

Orson Welles gets the top billing in this 1960 movie adaptation of the classic Biblical story, but Welles doesn't portray either one of the title characters. Instead he portrays (and perhaps fittingly so) Saul, the first King of Israel who disobeyed God so many times and lived with a divided heart. In some ways, Welles' life as the wunderkind of cinema parallels that of the life of King Saul. Whatever the case, it is Welles' performance that makes this 1960s sword-and-sandal-epic-wannabe worth watching.

The story is based upon the Biblical story, but except for the names of the characters, the film strays a great deal from the Bible story. Everyone knows that David was a shepherd boy who slain the giant Goliath with a slingshot and some stones and David did sing and play songs for Saul to sooth his troubled spirit. With one or two other exceptions, though, that's about the only thing DAVID AND GOLIATH that's accurate with Biblical writings. For instance, though David had served Saul, he wasn't an emissary to the Philistines at the time he killed Goliath. In fact, when David killed Goliath, Saul didn't even have a recognition of who he was. Also, Saul didn't slay Abner (Abner was later slain by Joab in revenge for his brother's death) and neither did David give Goliath's sword to Saul; he gave it to the priest instead.

Despite these discrepancies, DAVID AND GOLIATH isn't too bad of a film. The acting is decent and includes some excellent performances from both Welles and Hilton Edwards as the prophet Samuel. Samuel supposedly was the only person in all of Israel that Saul feared and in the movie Edwards seems to be the only actor that Welles fears. The movie does a decent job at giving some characterization and back story to the famed giant Goliath as well as fleshing out the character of David a bit (he once loved a woman who died tragically).

Yet, even with all the positives that it has going for it, DAVID AND GOLIATH doesn't live up to being a Biblical epic or a true swords-and-sandals film. Some of the characters are just miscast, for instance Ivo Payer seems more like a Greek god rather than a shepherd boy and future great king of Israel. Also, the movie leads up to the climatic battle between the forces of Israel and the forces of Palestine, but when the battle finally erupts there really isn't much of a battle. I realize part of this is because of the film code, but the climatic scene of the movie should last longer and be more exciting than a bunch of horses running around and a few men seeming to have a fist fight with bendable weapons.

DAVID AND GOLIATH isn't a terrible movie. Fans of sword-and-sandal pieces might enjoy it because it is a different type of movie in that genre. People who enjoy Bible stories might enjoy it, though some will not like it at all because it so freely adapts the Bible and roves from the source material. I do highly recommend it for Welles' fans, though. He delivers a fine performance and though he shows signs of the behemoth he was to become, he also displays through his performance why he was one of the greatest American actors to grace a stage, screen, or studio.

2 out of 5 stars Only the names are the same .......2006-02-15

A bible story like it was never told. All Israel looks like 1960's Italians. And when Goliath (Kronos) first appears they use 60's sci-fi music. I'm not sure but I think King Saul (Orson Welles) mumbles in Italian. The story has slightly changed and So David (Ivica Pajer) gets the girl and congratulations from Old King Saul. His rival (no not Goliath) Abner (Massimo Serato) gets the shaft.

The only real sad part was the scene where poor innocent cutie shepherd girl gets electrocuted.

I can not avoid saying "Read the Book"

1 out of 5 stars VERY DULL! NEEDS TO BE REDEFINED IN A COMTEMPORARY GEORGE LUCAS OR RIDLEY SCOT ASPECT........2005-08-14

I found the sound quality to be very poor quality all through the film. The acting was like Charlie Chaplin in the 1920's. The cast except for Wells, was outrageously comical and not qualified in any form (in my opinion.) for this film. Goliath apeared more zomped then Arnold in the "Terminator".

I would say the entire movie is not even worthy of a full star but that of a half. if you are looking for a more professional cast with provocative, emotional, quintessential, present role, check out "King David", staring Richard Gear, 1985.

Above all, the film was not a good depiction in the time it came out or subject to all factual.

4 out of 5 stars a strange melange of styles and acting.......2004-12-09

"Freely adapted" from the Bible, this film takes huge liberties with the stories of Saul, David, and their battle with the Philistines, but is very watchable nonetheless, and for many reasons, one of them just the fascination of its incongruities. The script is in "Olde English", with the "thees and thous" often coming from mouths that are speaking another language (the dubbing is hopeless), with two exceptions: The magnificent speaking of both Orson Welles, who makes a superb tormented Saul, and Edward Hilton as Samuel; it is a pleasure to listen and watch both these actors.

The rest of the cast is somewhat uneven, but the dubbing is partly at fault. Among the best are Ivo Payer, a handsome Croatian actor as David, Massimo Serato as a scheming Abner, and Eleonore Rossi Drago and Giulia Robini as Saul's daughters Merab and Michael. Italian circus muscle man giant Kronos plays Goliath, enjoying every minute of his screen time as he is seduced into action by a bevy of dancing girls.

The score uses Ernest Bloch's glorious "Shelomo" theme for the titles, and Carlo Innocenzi incorporates the melody into parts of the rest of the soundtrack (especially when David is romancing Michael), the scenic design uses Nineveh as its inspiration for Jerusalem, and the location shots were filmed in Israel, and Yugoslavia, where the desert turns into lush green fields as far as the eye can see for the final battle sequence.

I'm a big sword and sandal epic fan, and this 1960 film gets the award for being the most peculiar of the genre. A great curiosity piece for Welles aficionados, who will love his performance; his bloodshot eyes peer from behind the palace columns, a pasty faced mountain of paranoia, a character that is a joy to watch repeatedly. Total running time is 92 minutes.

1 out of 5 stars No Reviews At This Time........2004-09-16

{Orson Wells} / David and Goliath in the 1960 DVD Version.
I found this movie to be very mind-numbing I nearly fell alseep, because this movie was so boring and did not meet up to my expetations.
The quality & sound of the DVD was extremly poor, It had no pretense, no guidance, no thrill, no-nothing.

I would not recommend this DVD movie to anyone. I really want even give it a star (even though I had to select a 1 star rating). This is one AWFUL dvd movie that will set up in/on my dvd shelf and collect dust.

Although this movie is considered a classic, I only purchased this movie because of my quest for historical-biblical events transformed into a movie. I await the time for a NEWER version of David and Goliath to be released that has some feelings and a sense of meaning an overall Godliness to it.

Much creative license is used in the portrayals.
But the biggest drawback is poor sound quality.

I do applaud the attempt to save some of the cinema for future generations and I found these versions of three bibilical stories and one pseudo-biography interesting variations on their stories. You also get the chance to see some young fairly famous stars before they were very famous at all.

The movies included are:

The kingdom of Israel faces a fearsome threat when the Philistine army marches across its borders. At the forefront of the invaders is the giant warrior Goliath. This tall behemoth issues a challenge: he will take on an Israelite champion in single combat and the tribe of the loser will be enslaved. For 40 days Goliath repeats the challenge and there are no comers. Finally one boy does step forth: David, a shepherd boy who armed with nothing more than his sling...and a faith in God as towering as his mighty foe.

When David kills Goliath, blood spurts from his head wound and continues to flow as he dies onscreen. I had to turn it off before David cut off Goliath's head. I didn't finish watching it because my daughter was too upset. This video was much too graphic for my daughter and, in my opinion, for an animated Bible video.
