More Gems Mishandled by Cartoon Crazys.......2007-06-27
With such a great business plan-- buy up obscure, forgotten and public domain cartoons on the cheap and rerelease them in themed anthologies-- you'd think it would be hard to go worng. Nearly all of Cartoon Crazys' collections though, show little affection or even respect for the source material: there's been no visual remastering, so the prints look as if they were taped from afternoon "Cartoon Carnival" programs (which they may well have been), and irritating, out-of-place souond effects have been added to "enhance" the soundtrack. You might, for instance, hear a famillar effect from the Hanna-Barbera library injected into a much earlier toon such as an MGM or a Betty Boop.
If you are a serious collector and spot a title here that you really want, well, it might be worth it. Otherwise, don't waste your money.Cartoon Crazy's Fairy TalesCartoon Crazys: Goes to War
Anti-Feminist Angle?.......2007-06-10
Excellent and intriguing. Several of these can't be found anywhere else. The reasons for some of them being banned are, as the text says, really hard to understand today. "Scrub Me Mama w/a Boogey Beat" is especially interesting. Obviously, black people( mostly men) are portrayed in ugly stereotyping, ie. slow and lazy. But there are some other things going on, too. I noticed that in all of 'Lazy Town', one of the few people working, including animals and fish, was the washing LADY. Into this town comes a couple of very different black people, a riverboat captain(a prestigious occupation) and a boogey woogey singer(a member of the new Harlem Renaissance Group) I can't help but wonder if the real reason it was banned was because the black girl singer is sexy, hip, beautiful, well dressed AND a dynamite singer. She took the washer woman image and turned it upside down and had fun with it. Maybe I'm wrong but maybe the real reason was white audiences could not accept a black person that way. I thought she did a great job of blowing stereotypes out of the water. Why not show it, unless someone was afraid it would give black people or any outsider 'the wrong idea'
Hidden Treasures.......2007-03-19
This is a real discovery! A collection of lost, hidden, and obscured gems! Each cartoon is pretty shocking - even by today's standards! This dvd is well worth the money!!!
For collectors only........2007-01-09
There are better collections out there if you want high quality wartime cartoons. These look more like rejects, with the exception of the Snafu cartoons.
C'mon it's a cheapy!.......2006-10-10
Okay, there are a lot of grumbling reviewers out there complaining about this not being re-mastered visually and some sound being re-masterd inappropriately. If they all paid 20 bucks for this DVD, then I guess they can be upset, but get one used or off the dollar store rack and you can't go wrong.
Next, banned = not shown on t.v. or cable these days
because of racial, sexist, ethnic stereotypes and other presently not-politically-correct things. We wouldn't want the kiddies taking any of this seriously, now would we? Nah, they're safer watching MTV and reality shows like World's Worst Drivers etc.
Why get this? If you collect moving pictures or cartoons from bygone eras, it's a cheap edition to your collection. It's also a snapshot of the times. Aside from the SNAFU's, which were shown as "educational" material to the armed forces (loose lips sink ships etc.), the others were shorts shown in cinemas before the main attraction and weren't considered out of line by the general public at the time. No, it isn't stellar or mindblowing, and probably only interesting to some people.

The 28 cartoons in this collection were made by the Warner Bros. artists for the Army-Navy Screen Magazine during World War II, and were rarely--if ever--seen by the general public. The title character's name is an acronym for "Situation Normal: All Fouled Up" (substitute another "F-word" if you must), and most of his adventures are mildly didactic: Snafu ignores an Army regulation and/or common sense, and pays the price. In "Snafu vs. Malaria Mike" and "It's Murder She Says..." (1945), he goes without insect repellent in the tropics and ignores insect netting--and catches malaria. The stories were written by Ted "Dr. Seuss" Geisel, and the meters and rhymes echo his children's books. In "Gripes" (1943), Snafu begins, "If I ran this army...." The shots of Snafu's bare posterior and the occasional "damn" or "hell" were considered risqué during the '40s, but the depictions of buck-toothed Japanese soldiers are more likely to raise eyebrows today. Although obviously made quickly and cheaply--Snafu's appearance varies from film to film and Mel Blanc essentially reused Bugs Bunny's voice for the character--many of these cartoons are still funny. Unfortunately, Bosko Video disfigures these historically significant films by periodically inserting its logo into the frame. What were they thinking? --Charles Solomon
Customer Reviews:
It was ok.......2006-12-26
this was ok .for ww2 cartoons I was wanting a little more.
a ruined classic.......2006-09-13
These cartoons are part of war memoribilia and gave soldiers something to laugh at when they were being shot at. However, the quality of these transfers is horrible. Instead of being cropped properly and resized, they meerly blotted out alot around the edges. And the logo..please...DO NOT buy this collection, wait until someone does a proper release
Great Cartoon But..........2006-01-04
The Snafu cartoons are very good. They are really unexpected sexual jokes from the 40s era. However, there are few points I have to mention about them.
1- They are very short (3 min each)
2- In black and white (I wished if they were colorized)
3- The DVD doesn't contain any special edition
But I like the cartoons anyway. In conclusion don't miss this collection
Great historical document.......2005-07-25
Yes, there are some transfer problems (mostly cropped images) but the historical value of these cartoons, as well as their comedic value, is immense, and I for one am more than willing to overlook the technical glitches. There's also a lot of surprisingly raunchy humor (since these cartoons were made for adult soldiers, not little kiddies...) and fans of risque or censored art will find a lot to enjoy here. It's a great glimpse into the concerns of the time -- presented by some of the greatest animators of the WWII era.
BTW - I think the featured review, written by Michael Phillips, may not be written about this DVD... It goes on at great length about sound problems and navigational glitches that I didn't experience while viewing this collection. He also refers to a cartoon that is not included in this collection... So, it may be a bad review that was written for another product altogether. Anyway, I'd take the negative comments about this disc with a grain of salt... There are problems with the disc, but they shouldn't ruin your fun while watching these great, long-lost cartoons.
Great toons, but HOOOORRRRRIBLE dvd.......2004-01-07
I just got this dvd today and sweet jesus is this a horrible transfer to dvd. I honestly don't care about the logo, i'm am steamed, if you will, at the boarder that surrounds each of the toons. This really draws me back and makes me feel like this dvd is NOT worth the price tag is holds. This dvd feels really sloppy and underproduced. The least they could've done was make the toons fill out the whole freaking screen!!! Again, the toons are GREAT (and i'm generally not a big Looney Toons fan), but the dvd is really lousy.

Strange release, but some great classic cartoons.......2000-08-21
When I first saw this DVD, I was surprised that the Warner Brothers logo was not on the box. I found it hard to believe that they would let the "WinStar" company release some of their wonderful cartoons. My first thought was "bootleg". However, bootleg or not, there are some good classics on here.
My favorite is "Daffy The Commando", a funny short made in the 40's during WW2 that pokes fun at Hitler and Nazi's. Daffy comes in, and, naturally, makes a fool of the Hitler character in his usual crazy way. You will probably never see this cartoon on television, because Time Warner is a big company, and doesn't want to offend with cartoons that might poke fun at past differences.
Some of the other cartoons on this DVD include "Falling Hare", featuring Bugs and The Gremlin, "Tale of Two Kitties", featuring Tweety, "Corny Concerto", featuring Elmer and Porky. There are also a couple cartoons featuring Felix the Cat, and Casper too.
Winstar has done a decent job with the restoration, and even includes video of how they did it. However, some of the classic openings and endings (with the WB/Merrie Melodies logos and trademark music) of the cartoons are cut out! That seemed a little strange. Imagine seeing a generic graphic with the title of the short, followed by a cold start into the toon. No music, no classic Looney Tunes intro, nothing.
All in all, if you're a cartoon collector, then this DVD would probably be a good addition to your library for the hard to find shorts, and early versions of Bugs, Daffy, Elmer, Sylvester and Tweety.
Ugh!.......1999-08-22
The package boasts "classic cartoons"; this must refer to age only and not content or quality. The Warner Bros. cartoons have been stripped of their opening sequences with the credits and the "Merrie Melodies" theme music. Some of the other cartoons (Felix the Cat, Gabby, Toonerville Trolly) just aren't in the same league with those wonderful Warner Bros. Looneytoons. The picture restoration is fair; the sound restoration is tinny, and the "enhancements" to the sound effects are distracting. Save your money and buy something else.
top notch restoration and great sound.......1999-02-01

Description
The works of three great American animators, Tom Palmer, Myron Waldman and Seymour Kneitel are featured in "The Great Animators."
Customer Reviews:
a terrible disappointment--avoid!.......2001-03-05
Initially,I was delighted to come across this DVD since my father, Myron Waldman, is one of the featured animators. Knowing that there are pristene prints available of "Hawaiian Bird" and "Hunky & Spunky", I expected a wonderful digital keepsake of Dad's work. Then I watched it. This is an absolute abomination... the worst DVD I have purchased of anything... the audio has a constant rumble which sounds like a train throughout. As for the video quality, it's even worse than the audio. This is obviously a transfer of videotapes that are several generations removed from the master print... I wouldn't be surprised if these were just taped off television. For any serious collector of animation or anyone who enjoys cartoons, please wait until these works are properly remastered and packaged.

A true disappointment.......2000-04-27
Purchasing this DVD was a big mistake.
I expected to find some hidden animation treasures (like those found in The International Tournee of Animation tapes). No such luck. Many cartoons in this DVD are quite familiar and can be seen (even more clearly) on the Cartoon Network.
This Cartoon Crazys DVD projects a rather blurry image. For instance, the Max Fleischer Superman cartoons included suffer in comparison to the much superior visual quality found in "The Superman Cartoons of Max & Dave Fleischer".
Sound enhancements are actually annoying and unnecessary. They don't seem to meld seamlessly within the original soundtrack. In my opinion, those extra sound effects, with Dolby and what not, are reminiscent of Ted Turner's infamous obsession of colorizing every black-and-white movie classic.
Except for some interesting historical facts and trivia provided, I think there's little to recommend here.
Great idea ruined by VERY poor sound..........2000-02-08
You'd think companies would leave well enough alone... but NO, they have to go and try to improve things that DON'T need improving or CAN'T improved.
Frankly, the collection of cartoons on this DVD is excellent, but I can't recommend the disk. While the visual quality ranges from fair to very good, the audio is atrocious. Instead of simply cleaning up the old mono tracks for the toons, the company that released this DVD went ahead and "remastered" the soundtracks to the cartoons ==> ERGO, witness sound effects that NEVER existed in the original toons and horribly imbalanced soundtracks!
Save your money...
Hopefully, someone WILL release better versions of these toons in the near future.

As the title suggests, many of the characters in this offbeat collection began in comic books, but not all: Felix the Cat and Betty Boop debuted in animated films, and Popeye, Little Nemo, and the Toonerville folk appeared in newspaper strips long before comic books existed. The most striking films are the two Superman shorts. In "The Underground World" (1943), a race of hawk-men threaten to dip Lois and a scientist into a vat of boiling wax. "Electronic Earthquake" (1942) features an Native American villain who insists that Manhattan Island still belongs to his people. The oddest entries in the collection are an example of "Do Do, the Kid from Outer Space," a '60s British series told in doggerel rhyme, and a chunk of "Tobor the 8th Man," an extremely limited Japanese superhero adventure, also from the '60s. Most of the rest of the cartoons represent the work of animation's B studios. According to the liner notes, Winstar spent "thousands of hours remastering and remixing the entire soundtrack and added new sound effects, ambiances, and Foley work." It's not clear that a threadbare tearjerker like "Suddenly It's Spring" (1944, featuring Raggedy Ann, who began as a storybook character) warranted all that effort. Unrated: suitable for ages 8 and older for cartoon violence, occasional scary imagery, and racial stereotypes. --Charles Solomon
Customer Reviews:
The 8th Man episode is incomplete.......2007-01-10
I have fond memories of "Tobor the 8th Man" from the mid-60s and I wanted my 4-year-old son to experience the character. Since the quality of everything on this DVD is cr*p, that was all I was hoping to gain. It's hard to say whether I accomplished my goal or not. My son has learned the theme song, but still hasn't seen a complete episode.
Is anyone aware of a DVD of the original series being available?
My best friend has a theory why we no longer see this character on American TV: Ever notice the "funny cigarettes" he smokes when he needs to power up? HA!
Little Nemo and Popeye Make it Worthwhile.......2003-02-06
For the most part, this collection is made up of sub-par characters like Raggedy Ann, Little Audrey, Do-Do, and Tobor the 8th Man.
The value comes from Popeye, Superman, and Little Nemo.
Popeye is one of my favorite cartoon characters, and his adventures in this package ("Out to Punch," "I Don't Scare") are funny as always. Superman was never one of my favorite characters, but "Underground World" and "Electornic Earthquake" are some of his best. "Little Nemo" is the first colour cartoon ever made, and it's fascinating and funny.
Cartoons, especially those of Superman, Toonerville Trolley, and Betty Boop, look good. In fact, they look much better than the public domain videos and DVDs you're used to getting. The usual Cartoon Crazys extras (Production Notes, Reading Lists, Restoration Demo) are all here, as well as a few novelties. (Comic book gallery, wallpaper.)
Not a bad DVD, certainally interesting!.......2001-12-30
This is another installment of the excellent range of Cartoon Crazys DVDs. This is not one of the strongest, but it is worth buying for its curiousity value.
Among the usual Betty Boop, Popeye and Superman cartons, these includes three rare cartoons: One called Do-do, an Australian/British cartoon about an alien boy with a robotic bird, and both of them speak in rhyme!
Another one is Tobor the 8th Man, a B/W Japanese rip-off of Superman with a puzzling title (8th Man???). This cartoon is boring and pointless with no ending, but has a great line (making these signs oriental does not help to find your way!).
The last one is Little Nero, and although is only two minutes long, it was made in colour during the early days of silent animation! A true gem for any animation fan!
Winstar's commitment of restoration of these public domain cartoons does show on most of them, and is certainally the best I have ever seen. The "Feel The Sound" process is not as off-putting as I have feared, and it certainally enhanced the Superman cartoons to great effect.
This DVD is most suited for animation fans and Cartoon Crazys colectors. Not one of the best, but a good addition to my ever-growing animation DVD library!
Awful picture quality = awful DVD.......2001-11-28
Cartoon Crazys spared no expense in restoring the sound of these great cartoons, but the picture quality is near nonexsistant. I have some of these same cartoons on video, and even after years of repeated viewing, they do not look as bad this dvd offering. The colors are so faded & muted, that I know I'll never ever buy another volume of Cartoon Crazys. They actually look like they were adapted straight off of a dollar store copy of the videos!

Butchery!.......2000-05-20
Before buying this DVD, I already owned the vast majority of these cartoons on various VHS tapes. The reason I purchased it anyway was to get superior copies of the toons listed. Boy what a disappointment! The sound has been totally screwed up! In an attempt to enhance the the sound, Fox Lorber added sound effects that don't fit very well with the cartoons. (In other words the sounds they added are louder than the rest of the sound track and more clear... making them a serious distraction) The most obnoxious addition is on "Daffy Duck and the Dinosaur".At the end, when the Caveman goes to stab the giant inflatable duck, the morons who worked on the restoration added sounds from the "Psyco" shower scene. What a waste of money. I'll be watching my old VHS tapes instead. Fours stars (for providing a copy of great cartoon shorts) minus two stars (for terrible sound) equals two stars.
