Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931)
Fredric March won an Oscar® for playing the protagonist (and antagonist) of Robert Louis Stevenson's story. Dr. Henry Jekyll is an honorable man of science, albeit frustrated at the enforced celibacy of a delayed wedding date. Hyde is the fearsome creature he turns into after drinking a potion, and Hyde's appetites (mostly expressed with Miriam Hopkins's Cockney dance-hall wench) are decidedly unrestrained. March's performance is pretty theatrical, but it's fun to watch; his Hyde twitches and squawks and lopes around like an ape in a tuxedo. Rouben Mamoulian's direction has plenty of the brio of early-thirties Hollywood, and the transformations from Jekyll to Hyde are ingenious for the time. This film followed Dracula and Frankenstein into theaters by a few months, and it stands well with those horror classics--and it's a darn sight more fun (and much more down and dirty) than the 1941 MGM version of Stevenson's tale. --Robert Horton

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1941)
Classy MGM was not the studio most likely to make a horror movie in 1941, and in fact its production of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde ended up looking more like a glossy costume drama than a B-movie frightfest. The mood of Robert Louis Stevenson's tale of a divided doctor is ably captured in Joseph Ruttenberg's Oscar-nominated cinematography--more so, perhaps, than in Spencer Tracy's lead performance. Tracy wasn't especially happy about playing the role, although his transformations from good Dr. Jekyll to evil Dr. Hyde are convincing enough. One of the main reasons to see this version of the story is the young, impossibly beautiful Ingrid Bergman, then still a year shy of Casablanca. Bergman was cast in the good-girl part, but proved a shrewd judge of material, even this early in her Hollywood career; she finagled her way into playing the floozy instead, thus securing a more colorful acting platform than Lana Turner, who ended up in the more respectable role. Director Victor Fleming's previous movie was a little number called Gone with the Wind, and the Big Picture approach to that project may have influenced his work here--this Dr. Jekyll is just a bit too stately, too polished to really engage. The picture is so dignified it never cuts loose with the kind of wild invention that marked the 1932 version of the story, which won Fredric March an Oscar. It's the tale as imagined by Jekyll, rather than Hyde. --Robert Horton

Description

The classic tale about a scientist's investigation into the nature of good and evil will become a double feature for this title. The original 1932 Paramount uncut long version starring Frederic March - for which he won the Oscar - and the 1941 MGM remake with Spencer Tracy in the title role as well as Ingrid Bergman and Lana Turner will be offered together.

5 out of 5 stars The two Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde versions.......2007-06-20

Both 1932 and 1941 versions of this oft-told classic make for worthwhile viewing, with my own preference the earlier pre-Code entry starring Fredric March. It's the more frightening of the two, with stark, expressionist sets and ghoulish Hyde make-up accentuating Jekyll's turn from good to evil. The second entry has a gorgeous MGM gloss, and assured direction by Victor Fleming. It also has Spencer Tracy, a fabulous actor whose Hyde is a subtler rendition, a man with a heavier brow and leering expression, whose change seems more behavioral than physical. The second version also boasts the luminous Ingrid Bergman, playing against type as a streetwalker. See both entries, and make up your own mind. You won't go far wrong either way.

3 out of 5 stars Exploring the Dark Side of Human Nature.......2007-06-14

This 1932 film begins with a man playing an organ in a mansion. He is to speak to the university, they have a full audience for him. Dr. Jekyll speaks of the duality of man's nature, the good and the bad side which are always in conflict. If the bad side of man could be eliminated how much better for mankind? Are our beliefs crippling us? Does Dr. Jekyll spend too much time in the charity ward? His life seems just perfect. But his wedding is pushed back to a future date. A street quarrel attracts Dr. Jekyll, he helps a young woman, and she invites him back. Dr. Jekyll continues to experiment in his laboratory, he is obsessed with his theory. He experiments with the elixir on himself (no objective observer!). The effect is to free the bad side of his nature.

Dr. Jekyll has a setback in his plans, and his elixir transforms him into Mr. Hyde. He returns in search of that young woman. [The make-up of Hyde tells you something about the outlook of that time.] Hyde acts beastly, but his money makes him attractive to the young woman Ivy Pearson. General Carew agrees to Jekyll's early marriage to his daughter. Then Ivy Pearson comes to Dr. Jekyll for help against Mr. Hyde. Dr. Jekyll promises Ivy she will never see Hyde again. But there is an unintended consequence to Jekyll's experiments, and Hyde returns involuntarily.! There seems to be no return to Jekyll's peaceful past. Muriel still loves Jekyll, and goes against her father's wishes. Jekyll sets Muriel free from her promise. But there is another transformation! The police and a crowd of people chase Hyde to his refuge. A shot puts an end to Hyde, and Jekyll returns at the end.

I thought this story was an argument for Prohibition (alcohol can release the beast in man).

3 out of 5 stars a split review (4 stars for march but 2 stars for tracy) of a split personality.......2006-09-06

this dvd contains both the frederic march and spencer tracy versions of the robert louis stevenson novella. i had only seen the march film in a severely truncated print, and was always curious as to why this was deemed so good a movie; herein the dvd restores almost 20 minutes and i now agree to the quality: a nuanced performance by the leads (whither miriam hopkins?) and a splendid production under rouben mamoulian. the later spencer tracy version is a bore. revisionists are now trying to acclaim it as a misunderstood flawed masterpiece, but i disagree -- its just dull, featuring terrible miscasting of tracy, ingrid bergman, and lana turner. watch the movie to compare it with its far better predecessor.

4 out of 5 stars What Is The Nature Of Man?.......2006-08-25

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (DVD)

What Is It?

This is the monster movie classic from 1941. It has a cast of big stars that your kids (and maybe you) will not recognize. The "Father of the Bride" Spencer Tracy plays the good doctor and the monster that haunts Ingrid Bergman & Lana Turner. It was directed by Victor Flemming after his 1939 hits "The Wizard of Oz" and "Gone With The Wind." Shot in black and white, this film looks and sounds wonderful on the new "re-release" DVD that also includes the 1930's version.

How Was It?

This was a good film, but I think I would have been more impressed in 1941. The story was strong and interesting. Unfortunately the pacing of the film is just very slow.

Mr. Hyde becomes more "monstrous" as the film goes on. Each time he changes, it's uglier. This is a poetic choice, but at the beginning, it's hard to understand why Dr. Jekyll's friends don't see the amazing resemblance between him and Mr. Hyde.

Is It Good For Kids?

First of all, it is in Black and White. Most kids today have not been exposed to "good" black and white films, so most are turned off by it.

Secondly, it is still "Very Slow."

Finally, the issues are very heady. As "Mr Hyde", he has weird fantasies that are decidedly adult in there symbolism. Then it is a monster move with murder, ugly creators, and screaming women.

[...]
How about Spiritual Issues?

This is one of the most exciting parts of the film. The film starts in a church and ends with a Psalm being recited. Dr. Jekyll is trying to control the sin nature of the human soul with chemicals instead of God. (This is clearly stated at the beginning of the film.) When the Doctor realizes that he has an evil nature that he can not control, he dedicates all his time to breaking the bond in his soul to separate out his warring factions. The result is the personification of both halves. He names his evil side Hyde (or Flesh) and becomes him to indulge in sin. The sin starts at fantasies and watching "daring" shows, but then escalates to full consummation of evil. The problem of the soul is truly revealed when the Doctor decides to stop becoming Mr. Hyde, but then finds himself changing without the chemicals. He has not suppressed his evil, he has fed it, and now it is literally a Monster he can not control.

What Is Your Recommendation?

If you can get around the slowness of this picture, it is very interesting. Here we see that trying to live your life separate from God produces monsters, and the monsters may be us.

Otherwise, maybe it's time for a re-make... have you ever considered producing?

3 out of 5 stars 3 Stars For The 1941 Version.......2005-12-28

Although I thought it was good, Spencer Tracy in the 1941 version of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde is not as good as the l932 version with Fredrich March. I found it unusual that the character was called "Harry" instead of "Henry." The make-up of Mr. Hyde was not very scary, unlike the hairy Frederich March. They put a lot more effort into the end of the film than the rest of the movie.

Baywatch alum David Hasselhoff stars in the dual title roles of Jekyll and Hyde: The Musical, Frank Wildhorn and Leslie Bricusse's version of Robert Louis Stevenson's gothic horror classic. The story of the brilliant scientist who uncovers the good and evil aspects of the human heart was a pay-per-view event on the Broadway Television Network, filmed on stage before a live audience. If that audience had seen a lot of Broadway shows, they probably didn't see much they hadn't seen before, but its familiar plot and accessible pop score give Jekyll and Hyde a certain appeal, especially for musical novices.

Notable songs for Coleen Sexton and Andrea Rivette (as good girl Lucy and bad girl Emma, respectively) include "Someone Like You," "Once Upon a Dream," and the duet "In His Eyes." Hasselhoff cuts an imposing figure but is somewhat unsteady in such anthems as "This Is the Moment," which are tailor-made for big voices (for example, Linda Eder, Wildhorn's wife and the creator of the Lucy role). --David Horiuchi

Description

The longest-running show in the history of Broadway's Plymouth Theatre, Jekyll & Hyde: The Musical brings new life to Robert Louis Stevenson's classic story of romance and the epic battle between good and evil. A whirlwind odyssey pitting man against himself is set in motion when the brilliant Dr. Jekyll's medical experiment backfires, giving life to his evil alter ego, Edward Hyde. The show won a legion of repeat visitors (dubbed by the press as "Jekkies") and spawned hit songs on the pop charts with "Someone Like You" and "This Is the Moment."

5 out of 5 stars a fantastic show.......2007-06-09

this show was one of the best presentations i have seen of this specific show. when i ordered the movie i was very cautious to how it was made and presented. however, after i watched the movie, i was thrilled on the success of there show. they did great and everyone should see this film.

4 out of 5 stars I can't believe it, but this isn't that bad.......2007-05-01

Well sure Hasselhoff's voice isn't strong enough for some of the songs, but overall this isn't that bad a job. Mr. Hasselhoff does himself proud with this production. Most of the songs are good and the cast is very good. While this isn't the best musical i've ever seen,I did enjoy the show and my wife and I had a very good time watching it.

5 out of 5 stars Hasselhoff Pulls It Off.......2007-04-23

I had to give this version a chance. David Hasselhoff has an incredible singing voice and to give the performance he does in Jekyll and Hyde - The Musical is very impressive. But I admit I was a bit frustrated when I saw him practically pass out during his major schizo song. When that bed came in and he was still walking offstage, you could tell that song took quite a bit out of him.

Colleen Sexton as Lucy Harris. Wow wow wow wow wow! She brought quite a bit to the table, and she was in incredible company with the distinguished performers she shared the stage with including Andrea Rivette as Emma Carew. Sexton's and Rivette's performance of In His Eyes was outstanding. Not better than the original performances that predecessed Hasselhoff, but definitely is a ranking force in it's own. I would rank this second next to the Dream Cast concert of Les Miserables starring Colm Wilkinson as Jean Valjean.

This is the moment. Buy Jekyll and Hyde and give it a chance. You wont be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars The performance is pretty good; the problem is the vehicle........2007-03-13

Despite much negative opinion, this performance is in many respects not half-bad. I must confess that a good deal of negative criticism focussed on David Hasselhoff seems a lot more like grudge fulfillment. Still, others have turned in better performances. The question is, performances of what? Aye, there's the rub.

"Jekyll and Hyde" occupies the musical and dramatic world of "Phantom of the Opera" and "Sweeney Todd" - without being anywhere as good as either. Dramatically, although the musical follows a fairly single-minded and coherent line, it seems jumpy and fragmented because of the jumpy and fragmented changes of sets. We might go over the plot at this point - except that here we have classic of English literature which ought to be familiar to every person who gets into high school. If you haven't read Stevenson's tale, go read it and don't expect a Cliff's Notes version of it here.

Musically, "Jekyll and Hyde" is, in a word, boring. The music gropes in vain to achieve melody but in every instance fall short to one degree or another. The notes meander within traditional tonality, but fail to leave a lasting impression. That some of the numbers achieved a fleeting popularity is more a tribute to marketing than to any inherent musicality. No amount of belting or breathless intensity can give these tuneless tunes any more than an underachieved dramatic impact.

It's not an uncommon opinion that the problem with this version of the musical is that it stars David Hasselhoff. This is, to a large extent, a bum rap. I will admit that comparing the sound track here with the CD of the original Broadway production (starring Robert Cuccioli), there's no doubt that the original version is more satisfying. That doesn't mean that Hasselhoff doesn't turn in a solid performance - he does - nor that he doesn't have moments of chewing up the scenery. In fact, in many respects, Hasselhoff is the best thing about the whole production.

The star invests his rýle(s) with sincerity and authenticity. I suspect this gets past some viewers who let themselves get distracted by surfboards and talking cars. This part has been better played and will be better played, but Hasselhoff gives the audience their money's worth nonetheless. He clearly delineates Hyde from Jekyll, although his bag of tricks is rather limited - he sometimes manages a really chilling manic look to Hyde, but not as often as he should. Cuccioli's command of his voice serves him sell in this regard, but Hasselhoff's voice shows little difference between his 2 characters. His singing voice, as it happens, isn't bad. It's certainly up to the singing-in-the-shower sort of voice that we often hear in American musicals.

Hasselhoff's part dominates the musical, so that all the other characters are relatively minor. They are, however, played professionally in all cases, giving Hasselhoff a firm backing. I don't see, however, any one performer to single out as being anything but good-but-not-great.

I have already alluded to the physical presentation of the production. The many sets tend toward darkness rather than brightness. As a continuing factor, this becomes dreary. One wonders why we didn't start with well-lighted sets and gradually move toward darker ones. In addition to the less-than-useful dimness, the frequent set changes make the musical seem fidgety. Fortunately, the musical itself shows a single-minded devotion to its story line and manages - barely - to preserve a sense of unity and linear development.

On the whole, "Jekyll and Hyde" is entertaining on one hand and a bit of a chore to watch on the other. It tries very hard to ingratiate itself, succeeds in part, but in the end fails owing to the grisly nature of its development and ending. Nonetheless, it's a fine effort and worth seeing. Even the flaws are instructive.

5 out of 5 stars Great show, great music, deep on many levels. .......2007-03-13

This is a great performance of a great play, with terrific songs. It has meanings in many levels, and much to stimulate thought about love, duty, addiction, violence and twists of fate, and personal character.

Dr. Jackie Stevenson is a controversial therapist who believes the female psyche consists of the 'pure' and the 'lustful,' and she has developed an experimental serum that will separate the two halves, thus freeing her test subject from psychological and sexual inhibitions.

5 out of 5 stars The best I've seen so far.......2005-10-08

I have seen several Seduction Cinema movies. This one, Gladiator Eroticvs, and Lord Of The G-Strings and by far this is the best one. For once, seduction cinema has included the sounds of the sex in the movie. Although I can tell that they were dubbed.

The best way for me to descibe this movie to you is that it is a lesbien movie with a surprise twist of a conclusion, and how often do you find that in porn?

I really like the extras on this disc because it gets into the terrible lifestyle of the people involved in the movie. At one point the director is talking about what he did last night. He says "we injected some things, we smoked some things...".

If any one with Seduction Cinema ever reads this, I would like to see a fair-skined, dark haied Asian woman in your future movies. You had one with blond hair in this movie. Or maybe some Internet porn stars (Mason Storm or Dana Hayes) in your future productions.

5 out of 5 stars Required viewing for Misty Mundae fans.......2004-09-29

Seduction Cinema has come a long way since its early days, thanks largely to the contributions of one gorgeous starlet named Misty Mundae. By the time this film was released in 2003, production values, cinematography, and writing had improved dramatically from the oftentimes utterly ridiculous film spoofs of past years. At the same time, though, the company had not forgotten its mission; Dr. Jekyll and Mistress Hyde offers ample proof that these guys are still putting the Seduction in Seduction Cinema - and there is no one more seductive than Misty Mundae.

Julian Wells plays Jackie Stevenson, a straight-laced psychologist making waves with her theory about the dual nature of the female psyche; it's half "pure" and half "lustful," she argues. Her disparaging husband is having none of it because, if his wife has a lustful side, he hasn't seen it. He, of course, is lustful enough for the both of them - just ask the maid (Ruby DeLarocca). Dr. Stevenson has been hard at work developing a formula that will separate the two conflicting halves and somehow free women from their own inner shackles. When she tries the drug on one of her severely depressed patients, the poor girl winds up in a room with padded walls (but not before ravaging the good doctor in a nymphomaniacal fit). Naturally, Jackie then decides to experiment on herself, but with a smaller dosage. Now we see her repressed lustful side come out in the form of the wanton "Heidi." She goes prowling the streets, where she meets Dawn, a young lady with an uncanny resemblance to her first patient - probably because Misty Mundae plays both roles here. Dawn is a young lady of the night - aw heck, she's a hooker - who proves quite capable of satisfying Heidi's newly awakened needs. The two strike up a relationship (which does not preclude Dawn from bring other young ladies home with her), Jackie becomes more addicted to the serum and the carnal pleasures it brings to her through her alter-ego Heidi, and a few other things happen by way of filler between numerous hot and steamy encounters. There is a bit of a surprise at the end, but I think the filmmakers went out a little too far on a limb on this one.

You have to expect a few story problems and weaknesses from Seduction Cinema films, but these problems are more than made up for in terms of what I shall cleverly label "the good stuff." Not only are there more erotic scenes than usual in this Seduction Cinema film, the scenes are all well done and far from disappointing. You definitely get more Misty for your money in this movie than in most of her other ones. You also get Misty in a schoolgirl outfit - that, my friends, is worth the price of admission.

As usual, Seduction Cinema has thrown in a number of nice bonus features as well. There is a behind-the-scenes feature of over an hour and fifteen minutes that basically follows Misty and Ruby DeLarocca all the way from New Jersey to L.A. for the complete filming of the movie. Unless you're a Misty fan, you might find some of this video boring, as the girls don't do a whole lot, but highlights include a trip to the Walk of Fame and Misty spontaneously performing the rap part of Blondie's Rapture. After a short interview with Misty and Julian Wells, you can check out a whole slew of trailers: eight Retro-Seduction Cinema releases (including Misty's remakes of Lustful Addiction and Roxanna) and eight Seduction Cinema titles starring Miss Mundae. You'll notice there is a second disc included in the package; this is actually a compact disc containing the music from the film - I wasn't particularly enamored with the soundtrack, but maybe some out there will enjoy it enough to want to listen to it on its own.

Dr. Jekyll and Mistress Hyde is a decent effort in its own right, but there is no doubt that Misty Mundae makes this film something special. If you are a Misty fan, you will definitely want to add this DVD to your Misty collection - trust me on this one.

4 out of 5 stars Misty makes the movie.......2004-06-30

DJ & MH is what it is: a softcore B-movie (which you probably already new). In this genre, it does what it is supposed to; it shows you naked chicks making out and getting it on with each other in between the scenes dealing with the half-hearted plot. I watched three fourths of the movie in its entirety, before going to the remote. In super fast speed I could still tell exactly what was happening in regards to the plot; which was good only because I knew when to return to normal speed for when the scenes involved naked actresses, which was all I was interested in at the time. Still, the plot and the acting aren't bad enough to make you puke and you won't get a brain freeze if you watch it in its entirety.

Enough about the plot (which I believe is what was said when the movie was being written). Two words: Misty Mundae! This was the first movie I saw with Mundae; I plan on seeing more in the future, for sure. Misty looks adorable and delectable in her skimpy school girl outfit (she is playing a hooker dresed like a school girl). The street corner scene and the first warehouse scene between Misty and Julian Wells are the highlight of the movie for me. I enjoyed Misty's striptease, though there wasn't much to strip off as she had nothing on beneath her skirt. All the better.

The plot didn't grip me and parts of the lesbian scenes were ordinary. The sex scenes are tame, but a naked Misty Mundae (and Julian Wells) is delightful to see. Ruby LaRocca (the maid) scares me from the neck up, but she had a small part so she didn't detract. Having a man appear in the movie was lame, but he too was insignificant.

I am hooked on Misty Mundae. I plan on getting Playmate of the Apes next.
If you are a Mundae fan (a fan of Julian Wells or of naked lesbians) and have a few extra dollars and some extra time, go for it. Misty delivers what the plot doesn't.

5 out of 5 stars Great film.......2004-04-22

This was my first Seduction Cinema film, Misty Mundae caught my attention, but when I first saw it, it left my mind thinking. I know erotic films do not quite do that, but something about it made me think. And Misty Mundae and Julian Wells were great, they just are great on film. Tony Margusila the director did a good job and I cannot wait for Dracula.

4 out of 5 stars A-quality enjoyment from a B-movie.......2004-03-04

I wasn't aware about the world of seduction cinema, or misty mundae until recently. After getting this DVD i understood just why there's such a great cult following. I bought the so called limited edition copy out of 20,000. Seeing this I wasn't sure if I should open it, or keeped it wrap and auction it on e-bay. Well I did decide to pop the dvd into the player. I got caught in the dvd extras that I almost forgot to watch the actual movie.
Truth is mainstream hollywood movies don't provide this kind of entertainment.Watching this movie is like reading a sci-fi comicbook. It just has that way of being so animated. There's a story that actually shadows the softcore-sex scenes.
I enjoyed the dramatic acting of Julian Wells, and Misty Mundae.
Of course they aren't too bad on the eyes.

My favorite thing about the DVD is the behind the scenes documentary. I enjoyed the fact that it's based more on the actors day-by-day adventures, and mis-adventures when filming this movie.

There's also the soundtrack to this movie. I thought it was decent. I noticed that some or all the music was made on the Acid
music making program. The highlight track is the techno remix of "something's come over you".

I hope to come across more of seductive cinemas releases soon.

Stephen Frears reunites with the production talents who made the tempting Dangerous Liaisons for this new look at the infamous Dr. Jekyll (a deft John Malkovich). Instead of being in the laboratory where the good doctor unlocks his evil twin, we stay in the mansion overlooking the lab. An inquisitive, proper maid, Mary Reilly (Julia Roberts) slowly becomes Dr. Jekyll's confidant. Rather than a horror story, the film is a spooky mystery that keeps us in the dark, and what a wonderful dark Frears and his designers have fashioned. Roberts carries the movie, digging deep for her best dramatic work to date. Though some may wish she'd show more passion, she holds her emotions appropriately in check. The movie faced considerable, well-documented troubles, including the reshooting of several scenes months after the initial production. This probably affected the finale, which has little impact and nearly ruins a good thing. --Doug Thomas

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I can understand why this is not a Julia Roberts classic flick.......2007-07-04

This is not the way America is accustomed to seeing Julia Roberts. She doesn't act here like she did with "Pretty Woman", "I Love Trouble", or for that matter: " America Sweethearts", "Sleeping With The Enemy", or "Hook". There's one thing missing that's in all the movies I mentioned, and that's Julia's laughter. That laugh of hers as far as I'm concerned has become her trademark. Actors and Actresses all have a trademark as far as I'm concerned. George Burns always and forever had a stogey in his mouth, Groucho Marx always with those wire-rimmed glasses, and Julia Roberts with her laugh. However, don't think because she doesn't laugh in this movie that means it isn't good, on the contrary this shows her ability to drop her Georgian accent, and trade it for an almost Irish accent, but it also shows her ability to act in crossover films which prepared her for an I believe an Oscar nomination for supporting actress for the film "Stepmom". The story line I will have to look into this further, and see if Robert Louis Stevenson had a character named Mary Reilly in his story "Dr. Jekyll and Mister Hyde". If it's not it's still a good suspensful flick.

4 out of 5 stars A Twist on the Classic Horror Film.......2007-01-25

This movie has an interesting twist on the classic horror film. We are able to watch what transpires within the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde from the view of a chambermaid's perspective. This chambermaid, Mary Reilly, is played quite well by Julia Roberts. Mary Reilly is a poor girl who had a horrible childhood and feels the safety of security brought about by working in the house of a rich and distinguished doctor. Of course unlike normal servants of the time, she is able to read and becomes very inquisitive about her masters business. Mr. John Malkovich does a perfect job of showing the ongoing conflict between good and evil contained within each of us in his portrayal of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. As the good doctor he is a kindly man of science. But as Mr. Hyde all his inhabitations are gone, as are his morals and conscience.

This film takes the horror film and turns into a film that keeps you suspended in the dark as you watch the mystery unfold for the chambermaid. The movie is not a true classic horror film or one of the modern films of gore. Do not expect to be frighten and do not be surprised when the audience seems to be the only ones that can see it is obvious that Dr. Jekyll is Mr. Hyde. Other then that, both leads give a satisfactory performance and the film is worth watching.

1 out of 5 stars If negative stars were a rating option, I would use them.......2006-02-21

This movie had an interesting idea going for it in the beginning, but the bad acting, bad script, bad lighting, and horrible accents, killed it. I feel I lost brain cells just watching it. The only "scary" or "disturbing" part was Malkovich's face, which hardly ever changed into a believable expression. Robert's accent changed from scene to scene with upsetting regularity, which was extremely disappointing.
If the point of this movie was to show how "misunderstood" Jeckyl and Hyde may have been, it did a thoroughly awful job.
I would recommend a root canal over this movie, as it may be less painful.

3 out of 5 stars Half Baked, but Partially Edible.......2006-01-23

As far as filmmaking goes, this production only deserves 2 stars. However, because its classic Jekyll & Hyde source material (with its dark Freudian roots that reach into the subject of substance abuse) and the gloomy Jack-the-Ripper-in-London time period are so universally compelling, the movie is somewhat engrossing without really being effective.

I haven't read the novel on which MARY REILLY is based, but you can see the framework is there for a striking work. As the heroine is a lowly servant in the mysterious Dr. Jekyll's home, there's an element of spying involved that heightens the tension, and the role of women in Victorian times is a rich dramatic subject in itself. (Mary has few options in life and is forever treading on thin ice. When she risks listening outside her employer's door, it's a very different situation than if you or I were doing the same today.) There are no significant female characters in Stevenson's original novella, almost as if they weren't worth writing about, and telling the story from a female viewpoint opens the door for new layers of perspective.

A huge problem is that Stephen Frears fails to sustain an atmosphere that's either realistically grisly or theatrically horrifying. For one thing, although the occasional fog bank is rolled out, the lighting seems all wrong. When Mary hears noises in the night and creeps downstairs to investigate, the stairwell is lit with warm, honeyish light as if this were a sunny morning. (I don't know if this lighting is intended to flatter the actress playing Mary or not, but its as false and distracting as the clear polish that glimmers on her nails from time to time.) This sort of choice may seem minor, yet it completely undermines any air of menace. This same insensitivity to mood arises in the costuming, which is correct in its detailing but also brand-spanking-new. (When the impoverished Mary runs a scary errand, she wears a neat, sweeping tweed coat that would be perfectly at home in a Brooks Brothers or Burbury shop window today.)

These details aside, what truly derails the film is the fact that its stars don't share any chemistry. Julia Roberts is a natural sensualist while John Malkovich is coolly cerebral, and at least here, the opposites don't attract. It's also frustrating that, for some intellectual reason that may have appealed to Mr. Malkovich more than anyone else, Jekyll and Hyde aren't made to look very different. (Hyde basically looks like Jekyll with a hangover, and in need of a haircut.) This central conceit is completely jarring, and pretty much renders the drama ridiculous.

MARY REILLY was originally to be produced with Tim Burton (who ultimately chose to do ED WOOD instead) directing Winona Ryder. In this case, the idea of what might have been is far more exciting than what we finally get.

4 out of 5 stars Pleasant surprise.......2005-09-30

This was a surprise, as I didn't think Julia Roberts would ever attempt something serious and certainly not as intellectual as a costume drama. Her accent is a little hoaky, but she actually did a pretty good job here and I wish this movie was more acknowledged than it is as this is one of (if not the) few on her resume that has substance.

Instead of the traditional Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde journal entries and lab experiements, we see the good doctor falling apart from his chamber maid's perspective. Mary Reilly, a controlled, obedient woman, is busy about the house while a mysterious stranger seems to float in and out of the house. Eventually the stranger as well as the doctor (John Malcovich) take a shine to her. Both find her attractive, no question, but they're both fascinated by her and what a mystery she is. It follows the story of Jekyll and Hyde from an outsider's point of view (Mary's), and how a man is going mad with abuse of power. Glen Close even has a cameo which was all too brief.

Van Helsing: The London Assignment is a wild and clever animated prequel, slightly more than a half-hour, to the live-action hit film about 19th-century monster hunter Dr. Gabriel Van Helsing. Set just before actor Hugh Jackman's dark hero heads off for battle with Count Dracula in Eastern Europe, The London Assignment finds Van Helsing attempting to stop Dr. Jekyll, and the latter's terrifying associate, Mr. Hyde, from their bizarre and bloody quest to turn septuagenarian Queen Victoria into a lovelorn girl again. While the widescreen artistry is often brutal, it is also breathtaking, especially in a fantastic chase sequence involving train cars. Besides Jackman, several actors from the feature lend voices to their cartoon counterparts, including Robbie Coltrane (as Hyde), Alun Armstrong (as Cardinal Jinette), and David Wenhman (as sidekick Carl). Special features include an incisive interview with Jackman about his character. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars A New Opening.......2007-01-10

The Van Helsing movie opens with Van Helsing in a final battle with Mr. Hyde in Paris. This short animated adventure tells you how he got to that point. Van Helsing and Carl travel to London to investigate some sinister killings of young prostitutes. But the chase leads to far more complex plots than just the killing on young women.

Van Helsing gets tied up in a plot that involved Dr. Jekyll who is physician to Queen Victoria. The not-so-good doctor is obsessed with the Queen and has devised a plot to further his own ends with her. As we know from the full-length movie, Mr. Hyde manages to get to Paris. I won't reveal who the battles progress or the details of the plot but I found it to be rather entertaining. Other than Mr. Hyde being huge (taken from The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) unlike in Stevenson's book where Hyde is smaller than Jekyll, the story doesn't twist his tale as much as that of Dracula in the longer feature.

The animation is clean and the voices are true (Hugh Jackman and others from the feature film). If you enjoyed the feature film then you are sure to enjoy this one as it is very true to the movie (other than Carl being in the field). Check it out.

4 out of 5 stars Van Helsing.......2006-08-17

I rate this cartoon movie at three stars, but the documentary is worthy of 5 stars. Its actually worth the price just for the documentary. Its basically a great making of feature about the 2004 Van Helsing film.

4 out of 5 stars good.......2005-11-16

This movie is reasonably good. It's something to watch when you're bored but don't want to sit through a long, gritty movie. The London Assignment is short, sweet, and packs quite a bit into it.

3 out of 5 stars "Van-Fluff", the perfect way to describe it........2005-09-04

This over all prequel to motion picture is just an overblown fluff piece that could have been saved or perhaps will show up on the eventual DVD release of Van Helsing.

The animation feature is nicely done and the sound is great. The supliments are more or less a kind of press junket for te feature film follow-up.

At only a half-hour running time, you wish it was at least 80 mins. Hugh Jackman and the cast provide voice talent to bring this 'teaser' to life.

Rating: 3 1/2 stars out of 5

1 out of 5 stars Even Worse Than The Movie.......2005-05-27

Well, they did it with the Riddick series and it succeded, so I guess Universal decided it would work for Van Helsing as well. This is one of the hugest pieces of crap I've ever seen make it to DVD. Everything about it including the music and voices make it seem like some episode of a boring Saturday morning cartoon. From the first minute of it I was wishing for it to be over, and when it was I was happier than ever. If you didn't like the movie you'll probably hate this, likewise if you didn't like this but haven't seen the movie I doubt you'll like it either. If you liked the movie and haven't seen this I can't guarantee you'll like this short. Universal Studios have never sank so low in the history of their moviemaking.

Jack Palance will forever define the leading role in film adaptations of the Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde tale. His style and appearance were a perfect match for the role. A must have for the classic horror movie enthusiast.

4 out of 5 stars Jack as Jec "Doctor Jeckyll and Mr Hyde".......2006-11-16

This is a fast moving version of the Stevenson story that benifits from strong casting. Palance is an athletic and very menacing Hyde. The atmosphere of foggy London of the 1880's is captured quite nicely. All in all alot of fun to watch!

5 out of 5 stars A must see!.......2006-08-24

This movie was the first movie version of Dr.Jekyll & Mr.Hyde that did not make me feel sorry for Dr.Jekyll at the end. The story telling and acting helped to bring forth the directors vision ( or at least what I believe is the directors vision) in showing the progression of Dr.Jekyll slowly becoming Mr.Hyde to the point where the only difference between one or the other is the face they wear.

I agree with the other opinions that this version of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic tale is by far the best adaptation to date. I actually give it 4 and 1/2 stars out of five. I'm still waiting for the film version that sticks strictly to the plot and outline of the original 1885 story. Anyway, the 1968 Dan Curtis production is the closest we have to the story and the most powerful (more than I can say for either the 1932 Frederic March flick or the 1941 Spencer Tracy effort). Jack Palance was tragically passed over for an Emmy and Golden Globe for his superb performance of Jekyll and Hyde. Having read the unabridged edition of Stevenson's tale and after seeing this film I realize (perhaps too late) how the story has always been a metaphor for drug addiction. Stevenson claimed he quickly wrote the story down after having a nightmare but this is hardly your typical Gothic horror tale. It's possible Stevenson never acknowledged the story's underlying genius. Whether we wish to admit it or not, Mr. Hyde exists in all of us and we all have our drug of choice (whether it be food, alcohol, presciption drugs, heroin, sex, religion, etc.) that can bring out the hidden realms of our personality. This is a lesson well taught by this wonderful and under-appreciated film. To paraphrase the words of one of the film's main characters, "If the wisdom of tomorrow is learned through the violence of today, can there really be a tomorrow?"

5 out of 5 stars a Faithful representation of the book.......2005-09-04

. I first saw this TV presentation back in 1969. Then, a local PBS station, in 1978, rebroadcast this presentation in which I've made a VHS tape of that broadcast. Now, after searching, this broadcast is available on DVD.

Jack Palance did a superb performance in the title role. His portrayl as the timid doctor and as the monster were well acted. No other actor (even the original actor who was supposed to have this lead role if it wasn't for a strike that happened during the production, Jason Robards) could have filled the shoes as did Jack Palance.

The classic British scenery and atmosphere made the story more believable and more realistic-not as cardboard as the movies were of old and new.

Classic storytelling at its best.

4 out of 5 stars Dr. Jekyll and Ms. Hyde DVD Review.......2004-11-14

The Story
Dr. Jacks is a perfume scent maker. But he's also a scientist. One day he discovers that one of his long lost relatives was the infamous Dr. Jekyll. When he tries the formula to try to perfect it, he unleashes his alter ego, Ms. Hyde. Now he must try to find a way to reverse the curse before its too late and she takes his body and his job.

My Review
I had seen this a while back on tv. Not completely in full, but most of the film. So recently i found the DVD at my local best buy for 5.99. I bought it with 2 other 5.99 dvds (being The Great White Hype, and The Adventures of Pinnochio). So today i watched it and i rediscovered why i enjoyed the movie so much. Its not a horror film, its a comedy. The acting i thought was pretty good and the effects while not the best were decent enough to get the job done. The young woman who plays Helen Hyde, actress Sean Young, is attractive and quite the evil lady. The movie starts as Jacks goes to a relative's will reading. He inherrits his great grandfather's scientifit journals. It is here that he discovers that he's not a Jacks at all, but a Jekyll.

Jacks starts to study the formula closely and discovers that maybe certain things had to be upped before the formula could actually work. What he does is up the estrogine that's inside by 160%. What ends up happening is that its too much, and now instead of turning into an evil hyde man, he becomes a female. Now his life is thrown into chaos as he tries to keep his job going with the perfume place trying to make a new scent, keeping his love life together, and trying to get rid of Hyde. It only gets more difficult when Hyde herself tries to work up a scent and try to take over his life and his job. Funny things happen, and in the end the guy has the last laugh.

Dr. Jekyll and Ms. Hyde is rated PG-13 for slight nudity and sexual inuendo.

DVD Featurs
This is the only bad thing about the dvd. THERE ARE NO FEATURES WHAT SO EVER! Not even a trailer! Its almost like a simple transfer of a widescreen VHS version of the movie onto a DVD-R.

The bottom Line
If your into laughs and just want a good comedy, this one's for you. Just don't expect anything extra other than a decent widescreen transfer of the film.

5 out of 5 stars Why isn't this great movie on DVD?.......2003-05-05

I won't tell you the story because the other reviews already did. Just know that, though this isn't the best movie ever made, it's not that bad either. The other people who reviewed this movie as poor are way too critical. Relax and have fun. A wacky comedy that's enjoyable and weird. Hopefully, it will be released on DVD.

4 out of 5 stars The Movie.......2001-10-28

I first saw this movie on cable and liked it. A friend of mine had this movie and we watched it. It was great. A remake of the original and ten times better. It starts off when Dr. J canges into Ms. H. Well lets just say she reveales some great parts of her body to us. This is a deffinate buy.

3 out of 5 stars Delightfully campy spoof on the horror book.......2001-05-24

This 1995 spoof of the famous "Dr. Jekyll and Ms. Hyde," is disappointing in its comedy, mostly focusing on body references and sexual humor to only produce chuckles and groans.

Tim Daly (Dr. Jacks) tries to find a potion to cure the source of human evil by adding estrogen to the potion. By doing this, he transforms into sexy (and annoying) seductress Helen Hyde (Sean Young) on occasions. Helpless to stop this process of man to woman and woman to man, Dr. Jacks tries to convince his fiancee, Sarah (sexy and always watchable Lysette Anthony) to help him find a cure for taking Helen out for good.

The movie is delightfully campy in the beginning, but in the last 15 to 30 minutes, suddenly turns somewhat suspenseful, hilarious, and romantic. A hilariously campy movie with a satisfying ending. Rated PG-13 for crude sex-related scenes and humor, sexual innueudo, nudity and language.

1 out of 5 stars Poor, bad, horrible, painful to watch, take a pick.......2001-02-03

A young doctor transforms into a psychotic woman on a regular basis. If this plotline excites you, than you might find something you like in this movie. I didn't. I actually found it to be one of the worst movies I have ever watched. Sean Young is a strong contender for being the most annoying actress there ever was, back to back with Melanie Griffith. This film is unfunny to the extreme and I strongly suggest that people beware of it.

Description

Jekyll and Hyde get a sex change! When slimy stud Dr. Chris Leeder (Jack Buddliner) takes possession of Dr. Jekyll's ancient notebook, he quickly becomes obsessed with the murderous sex crimes of the original Mr. Hide. Ignoring the notebook's warning that the Jekyll and Hyde formula "makes people appear as they really are," the demented doc mixes the potion and promptly turns into..."Miss Hyde" (Jane Tsentas), a sexy blonde in a mini-skirt who just happens to be a homicidal nymphomaniac! After enjoying a lesbian romp with Leeder's secretary (legendary skinflick starlet Rene Bond), and the sadistic slaughter of a drunken sailor (ouch!), Miss Hide decides to pay a visit to Leeder's fiancee (Jennifer Brooks) and permanently cancel the wedding...Gender-bending adult horror, "The Adult Version of Jekyll & Hide" is another outrageous classic from the Mighty Monarch of Sexploitation, producer David F. Friedman.

really only good if you are a rene bond completist, there is much of her here but not much else when she isn't

4 out of 5 stars Not your typical sexploitation film.......2007-01-10

Compared to other films of the sexploitation genre, the "Adult Version of Jekyll and Hide" is well done. I think the take on the Jekyll and Hyde theme is goofy and ridiculous, but it makes for a very entertaining movie. The acting, the sets, and the script are all decent. Aside from being a nudie film, this movie also doubles as a suspense/horror movie as there are some violent scenes which are quite graphic. Nothing to scare anybody, but definitely more than your typical sexploitation movie.

The film also features an entertaining commentary by the producer, David Friedman, as well as the theatrical trailer and some sexploitation ads. The film quality is crisp and clear. Sometimes I prefer watching these movies with a little more grain: it gives the movies a bit more bite and adds to the sleaziness of it all!

3 out of 5 stars THE ADULT VERSION OF JEKYLL & HIDE!.......2001-10-04

Yes! Before there was BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA! Before there was MARY SHELLEY'S FRANKENSTIN! There was THE ADULT VERSION OF JEKYLL & HIDE! That's right, its HIDE not HYDE! Because in this ADULTS ONLY version of the famous story by ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON (Author of TREASURE ISLAND and other great books!) the good doctor is interested in the murderous sex crimes of the ORIGINAL Mr. Hyde! When he recreates the experiments he transforms into--(wait for it!)--the blonde bombshell Miss Hyde! Not to worry, this alter ego also has an APPETITE for SEX and MURDER! This is a film that knows what the audiences wanted in 1972 and certainly tries to give it to them! And with this DVD you get the proverbial much, much more! AUDIO COMMENTARY from the producer! Plus neat stuff from the FRIEDMAN GALLERY OF EXPLOITATIVE ART! Oh, and the ORIGINAL TRAILER!

3 out of 5 stars Warped..of course!.......2001-02-25

Being a fan of all things "Dr.J/ Hyde" I sought out this curio for the sheer novelty of the thing. It's definitely not for everyone (buy YOU aren't everyone or else you wouldn't be reading this review!!) so the cult-film fanatic will enjoy. Basic story with the good doctor discovering Dr.Jekyll's old diary. That's basically the story with the doc transforming into a beatiful babe about mid-way through. Some masochistic violence (Hyde-style) ensues. Cool T&A throughout. The three rating is for good cult-film style fun, with 1 star for "Ms.Hide"?

3 out of 5 stars Cool.......2000-07-06

Not much for storyline here. It's a classic Jekyll and Hyde movie with probably more T&A then needed. But I mean, come on, you don't watch these movies for the great story, right>

Description

In this chilling twist on the classic Jekyll and Hyde story, psychologist Charles Marlowe (The Lord of the Rings' Christopher Lee) invents a drug which releases his patients' inhibitions - but tests on himself result in the cruel, immoral Edward Blake, who wreaks crime and murder upon the city. Marlowe#s lawyer, Utterson (Star Wars' Peter Cushing), believes Blake is blackmailing the good doctor but soon uncovers the horrifying truth.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars The Strange Case of Dr. Marlowe and Mr. Blake, I presume.......2006-08-30

This 1971 horror film is an interesting one because "I, Monster" is clearly Robert Lewis Stevenson's "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," but with the names changed. I understand why all of the names were changed when F.W. Murnau made "Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens," namely because he was doing "Dracula" without paying the Stoker estate. But this film says is based on "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," and then changes the names of the protagonist and his alter-ego to Dr. Charles Marlowe and Edward Blake, both played by Christopher Lee. On top of that, as far as adaptation goes of the Stevenson classic, the screenplay by Milton Subotsky is more faithful to the novella than other films that actually go out under the Stevenson title. You can tell that as soon as Stevenson's supporting characters, the lawyer Frederick Utterson (Peter Cushing), Dr. Anthony Lanyon (Richard Hurndall), and Poole the Butler (George Merritt) actually show up for this version.

At the turn of the previous century, Dr. Marlowe has been experimenting with a drug that lowers the social inhibitions of his patients. The doctor discovers that a prim and proper Victorian woman starts taking off her clothes. An angry businessman becomes a weeping child. When Marlowe tests the drug on his cat, it turns the feline into a snarling beast that he has to kill. Despite this clear warning and having some concern that he is turning people into what they are not, he takes the drug himself, and of course it turns into a cruel, murderous brute. Marlowe's friend, Utterson, meets Blake when he tramples a girl and pays off the girl's father with a check drawn on Marlowe's account. Mistakenly believing that Blake is blackmailing Marlowe, Utterson will eventually discover the horrible truth of what is really happening.

How is this film different from other versions of the Jekyll and Hyde story? I would say that Milton Subotsky's screenplay works in Freudian elements more explicitly, and for the most part more successfully, than other versions. Marlowe is a psychologist and an early disciple of Freud in 1906 London. Not only is Marlowe interested in unlocking the dual nature of human beings, but he wants his drug to help him learn through the use of chemicals what would otherwise take hours of therapy sessions. So Marlowe is looking for a short cut for finding out the hidden sources of his patients' problems. This line of reasoning falls apart a bit when you consider Marlowe has also come up with an anecdote, useful to Stevenson's story to force the transformation back, but sort of counter-productive if his drug will set his patients free.

This was the second time that Lee had played the Jekyll and Hyde roles, having stared in "The Two Face of Dr. Jekyll" for Hammer in 1960. Ironically, 1971 was also the year that Hammer, the studio that made Lee and Cushing household names, produced their gender-bender, "Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde" with Ralph Bates and Martine Beswick. In the end, I am surprised that I do not like this film more than I do. I like the performances by Lee and Cushing, how the transformation is done with a minimum of makeup as such things go, and the overall faithfulness of the film to the original story. But director Stephen Weeks lets things drag way too much in terms of the pacing and that prevents the film from getting any real sort of momentum. Then you throw into the mix that this movie was originally filmed in 3-D, which explains why Lee is thrusting mice and Bunsen burners at the camera, but none of that adds anything to the experience, and I end up rounding down on this one. Still, fans of Lee and Cushing should certainly check it out at least once.

3 out of 5 stars "What would I be doing with an ugly thing like you?".......2005-04-18

I was pleased to see someone bothered to dig up I, Madman (1973) - Amazon gives 1973 as the theatrical release date, but the IMDb lists 1971, so perhaps one is the American release date, and the other a UK release date -a musty, under appreciated Amicus (The Studio That Dripped Blood) film for a DVD release, as it gives me hope that perhaps there's enough interest to see the release of some of what Amicus was really known for, that being their horror anthologies. I would surely like to see such films as Dr. Terror's House of Horrors (1965), Tales from the Crypt (1972), and Tales That Witness Madness (1973) made available on DVD. Based on the story The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson and directed by Stephen Weeks (Gawain and the Green Knight), the film brings together the legendary stars Christopher Lee (Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith) and Peter Cushing (The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires) in one of their many, on screen collaborations. Also appearing is Mike Raven (Lust for a Vampire), Richard Hurndall (Doctor Who: The Five Doctors), George Merritt (Quatermass 2), and former rock singer-turned actor Michael Des Barres (To Sir, with Love).

Lee is Dr. Charles Marlowe, a psychologist in the process of developing some kind of serum that would effectively break down unconscious barriers and free ones inhibitions. What's the therapeutic value of such a formula? Well, he believes that many illnesses of the mind are due to repressed desires, and by allowing one to confront these, it is the first step to accepting them, and will ultimately lead to a healthier individual...or something like that. He does try it on a couple of patients with some startling (and kinda funny) results, but is unwilling to give them multiple doses, so, like any respectable man of science, he begins injecting himself. This brings forth the persona of Mr. Edward Blake, a grotesque, hideous, impulsive man who prowls the night looking for something...cheap thrills, perhaps? Anyway, as Marlowe's friends and colleagues, particularly his lawyer (or barrister, as they say in England...man, those English have a different word for everything) Frederick Utterson (Cushing) begin to question his involvement with this Mr. Blake, Marlowe himself sees the personality of Blake growing stronger and finds himself increasingly disgusted with, well, himself, so he vows to stop taking the serum...but guess what, he doesn't need to take it anymore as Blake now appears without its aid, and his crimes become more and more serious. Will Blake assume control completely? Or will Utterson come to understand what's happening to Marlowe and save him from himself?

Younger viewers may find it curious the opening bit before the film begins in that of a graphic featuring swirling colors, funky music, and the words `Our Feature Presentation'. If you were around in the 70's and went to the movies, you'll remember this, and, perhaps like myself, appreciate the inclusion...nice touch by Retromedia. Anyway, upon putting the DVD in my player, the first thing that popped up was a disclaimer apologizing for the quality of the film, as it was culled from a number of different audio and video sources to present the most complete version possible. Uh oh...I'll talk more about the quality of the audio/video aspects later. As far as the film itself, I've heard this version, which producer Milton Subotsky also wrote the screenplay for, follows the source material closer than most of the films out there, especially the more popular versions, except for the fact he didn't use the names Jekyll and Hyde, apparently to avoid any legal difficulties. I've generally always enjoyed Lee and Cushing regardless of what they're in (although Lee seems to have appeared in quite a bit more schlock than Cushing, but, then again, he's also outlived his friend and has done enormously well in his later years, so who's laughing now?), and having them together usually guarantees a good time, at least for myself. I thought both actors did well, but I was a little sadden to see Cushing relegated to a relatively insignificant role, his appearing in the film more of a chance to use his name for advertising rather than his skills as an actor...oh well, there are no small parts, right? I thought the script very strong, and the sets and various props incredibly detailed preserving the feel of this period piece wonderfully. There's a whole lot of talk early on about Freud and his theories, and theorizing about whether good and evil are inherent or stem from societal influences, so for those looking for a bit more of the spectacular may be disappointed. I liked the way the transformation scenes were handled, as there's really no visual display of this as Marlowe changes to Blake, but more of a before and after kind of thing. Lee did look a little goofy at times as Blake, often with a goofy grin on his face, but the later scenes, where the effect becomes more pronounced, are pretty good. All in all not a bad little movie but not for everyone, but fans of Hammer and Amicus will probably want to check this relative rarity out. One thing to note, this film was originally going to be released in 3D, but the idea was nixed about halfway through because it wasn't working or something. Some scenes were re-shot, but occasionally you will notice items being thrust forth...it's not as obvious as that John Candy/Dr. Tongue skit on the SCTV show, but it's still kind of odd.

The picture quality on the non-anamorphic widescreen (1.85:1) is pretty rough. The fleshtones are sickly, the colors are either muted or overly garish (especially the reds), and there is quite a bit of picture grain throughout. The audio is a little better, but will require one to turn up the volume as it's on the soft side. As far as extras go, there is a very rough trailer, a still gallery, and something that made up for much of what this release may have been lacking in an amazing reproduction of an original, British pressbook.

4 out of 5 stars Long overdue DVD, but for collectors ONLY!.......2005-01-22

At long last, a DVD release of this 1970 Amicus release. Perhaps too late, considering the brisk sales of the bootleg over the internet, etc. However, I would have to recommend this release only for the most avid collectors/completists of Amicus/Hammer/Christopher Lee/Peter Cushing/British horror. This both on the merits of the DVD, and of the film itself. The film is essentially a fairly faithful adaptation of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, with the names inexplicably changed to Dr. Marlowe and Mr. Blake. The story of its filming has been told well elsewhere and often (the abortive 3D process etc.), and the loss of time and money unfortunately show in the
