For its first animated feature, Bavaria Film turned its back on centuries of German folklore for a story linked to the hoopla surrounding the 500th anniversary of Columbus's first visit to the Americas. The Magic Voyage is a clumsy copy of Disney's Ben and Me, with Christopher Columbus and Pico the woodworm taking the places of Benjamin Franklin and Amos the mouse. (Although he's supposed to be a worm, Pico sports arms and legs--but the designs are the least of the film's problems.) Pico gnaws Columbus's cube of the world into a globe, giving him the first of many ideas. While Columbus obtains financing for his voyage from hotheaded Ferdinand, flirtatious Isabella, and their weasely friar-counselor, Pico falls in love with Marilyn, the firefly princess. Marilyn is the prisoner of an evil but unexplained swarm of bugs, which take her west. Pico and Columbus follow them to the New World, where they steal a golden pseudo-Aztec idol and "make squishy" with the swarm. Although some talented artists worked on Voyage, the animation is crude, and the songs utterly forgettable. It's no wonder this maladroit film never received an American theatrical release. --Charles Solomon

Description
It's a double feature of fantasy and spectacle from American International Pictures, which imported a series of foreign films in the early 1960s packed with eye-popping special effects, strange storylines and breathtaking color. Thus came The Day the Earth Froze, in which a witch freezes the world until she achieves her evil desires. Producer Roger Corman also recruited director Francis Ford Coppola to redub and recut a Russian film into The Magic Voyage of Sinbad, a feast of miraculous visuals and lavish settings bound to please every fantasy enthusiast.
Customer Reviews:
Sword and Sandal flicks.......2007-01-16
Poor quality special effects and wooden acting. Not much better than an amateurish school pantomine.Possibly due to dubbing.
Fairy Tales for the Eyes.......2006-10-07
A little necessary background:
SADKO is a Russian fable about a harpist living in Novgorod who charms the Sea King and winds up rich. He also winds up sailing overseas to sell wares and, during a storm, is forced overboard where he once again charms the Sea King with his harp and is compelled to chose a wife from among the King's maidens before finding his way home to happily-everlasting-ness. (This has been turned into a famous opera by Rimsky-Korsakov called SAKDO.)
KALEVALA (pronounced: kah-lay-vah'-lah) is a Finnish epic poem compiled by Finnish poet Elias Lönnrot. It is at the heart of the Finnish culture and very familiar and dear to them. A few characters crop up thru out the poem. As does the magical Sampo which would spare the owners the rigor of work.
Which brings me to the movies:
THE MAGIC VOYAGE OF SINBAD was a Soviet Union's filming of SADKO dubbed by American Capitalist running dog Roger Corman into a Sinbad story. So now Sinbad is a tall, stocky blonde with heavy fur clothes to keep out the heat. The city of Novgorod substitutes for an Arabic city. But, even more ludicrious is the effort by the Soviet filmmakers, halfway thru the country's failed experiment in Socialism, to turn Sadko into a self-sacrificing proletariat (christians and liberals will be turned on by the message, too).
I can still recommend this film because the cinematography perfectly evokes a fairy tale, and the story can be enjoyable if you manage to put away your sophistication and see it thru a youngster's eyes. I saw it as a young teenager, and the scene with the Bird of Happiness with Rimsky-Korsakov's SONG OF INDIA filling my ears is one I recalled for all these years and caused me to search for the film until I finally found it again.
While the Finnish poem, KALEVALA, has very little plot spread diffusely thruout the enormous length, THE DAY THE EARTH FROZE pulls the threads together. There's something uneven about the plot. It is slow in spots, then engrossing in other spots. It is however, like the movie above, a visual delight, despite the (very obvious) skimpy production values.
I saw part of this film mocked by the Mystery Science Theater folk, but I kept thinking how I'd like to see the film without the intrusive teasing. I was very happy to find it on DVD and see it in its pristine form.
However, the cast credits are a hoot. They actors listed in the movie must be the voice dubbing actors (or they're entirely made up). Curiously, Amazon lists a different and more authentic-sounding cast (altho, they say the story is based on "Norse/Scandanavian mythology" -- which would be a surprise to the non-Scandanavian Finns).
Sampo.......2005-08-30
The Day the Earth Froze is a Finnish fantasy given the MST3K treatment in season 4... I don't know if this is on any of the MST3K Rhino compilations but it should be, it was in my top 3 best Mystery Science Theaters ever. This is the famous Sampo movie... any MSTie would know that Sampo was referenced in many of their subsequent rips (this and Manos Hand of Fate), but this flick is actually quite good on it's own, if not bizarre and Finnishly surreal. The Sampo is a mythical device, sort of a cornucopia, that looks like an overwrought espresso machine, that dispenses gold, flour and salt... all the Finnish neccesities! (classic Tom Servo comment, "You'd be surprised that the line for the gold isn't that long") This was acquired by Roger Corman at one point and re-editted by Francis Ford Coppola, for redistribution in the states for cash. I believe the Sinbad movie was similarly reworked, as noted by the other reviewer. I haven't seen it so I can't comment on it, but for a very bizarre Wizard of Oz via Finland flick, the Day the Earth Froze is worth the price of admission.
My Fifteen Minutes .......2005-03-05
"The Magic Voyage of Sinbad" was originally a lovely Russian film, based on Rimski-Korsakov's opera, "Sadko", which Roger Corman bought for AIP back in the early 1960s and then hired Jack Woods to write a dubbing script which transformed the whole thing into an Arabian Nights fantasy. This in an effort to cash in on the popularity of such fare at the time ("The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad", etc.) I was directly involved in the whole process of improving upon the original material. At the time I was an aspiring actor of sixteen and Mr. Woods was my agent. He worked mostly as an editor, but got to know Corman at some point, who persuaded him to go into the dubbing business. He completed a few projects which did reasonably well as matinee fillers and drive-in make out movies, such as "Pirate of the Blackhawk" and "Atlas". When he came to "The Magic Voyage of Sinbad", I was called in as an editing assistant and dubbing actor. I provided the voice for young Hadabad, who runs away with the famous Sailor on his quest for the ... um ... "Bird of Happiness". In the course of my own adventures behind the scenes I met Mr. Corman (he held up his hand to shake in such a way that I thought he meant me to kiss his class ring, which I did), even worked with him directly in the editing room and on the dubbing stage, where he hung out and himself filled in voices for crowd scenes. It is unfortunate that it cannot be distinguished from any of the others, for he had a lovely voice at the time, together with a quite ironed and pressed and neatly parted collegiate look that was then quite the chick magnet (he appears in the same guise for "Godfather II", where he plays a member of the Senate Committee). When the film was completed, it was sneak previewed (with "Breakfast at Tiffany's", possibly a greater work: certainly the lip synching was more believable, and there was this Audry Hepburn goddess in it that bested all the women in our effort), yes, sneak previewed, as I say, at a second run house in West Hollywood, forget the name of the place. But, well, in it's original form, Sinbad comes into town, takes a look around and says, "I have come!" This brought on laughter which did not stop for the other 79 minutes of the show. Mr. Corman took Jack aside in the lobby afterwards and said, "Looks like we have a few problems." I, myself, by this time had skulked away into the night, trying to change my voice. Later, I guess Corman hired Francis Coppola to pull the thing into better shape because, having recently bought the DVD from our host here and viewed it for the first time in ... what? forty years? ... well, a long time, anyways, I have to say it is not as bad as it was when it first came out. Seems to have been all pulled together with a narration and some of the dumber lines have been removed. Mine, sad to say, remain intact. My salary provided me with the price of a SAG card, which I never needed to use, for I didn't work again as an actor but went on to fail at other things until I finally settled on becoming the great novelist that I am today. Jack Woods subsequently did fine work as an editor for John Cassavetes ("Husbands", etc.), even did some directing and acting for "Equinox", a film that was well reviewed by Rolling Stone ... um, you see, man, at that time it was fashionable to alter the consciousness in certain ways and things which would otherwise look quite ordinary became exceedingly groooooooovy!
Wrong movie reviewed.......2005-02-15
All of the above reviews are obviously for a movie other than the Russian fantasy MAGIC VOYAGE OF SINBAD.

Prince Caspian, the second fantasy adventure after The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe in British author C.S. Lewis's beloved, Bible-based Narnia series, was first published in 1951, with The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (1952) just on its heels. In 1989, these two novels were merged and adapted into a BBC TV series, and then edited into a riveting, but rather homespun feature-length production in two parts. In the first 59-minute episode, Lucy, Edmund, Susan, and Peter are mysteriously whisked back to Narnia at the call of Prince Caspian, nephew of the cruel King Miraz, ruler of all Narnia. Miraz, who silenced Old Narnia, wants to kill his nephew, the rightful heir to the throne, so his own new baby son can be king. The four siblings help the fauns, dwarves, and talking animals of Old Narnia in Aslan's fierce battle to drive Miraz out of Narnia.
In the second, 109-minute episode, Lucy, Edmund, and their obnoxious cousin Eustace Scrubb have just been sucked into a maritime painting of the Dawn Treader... and into another dangerous adventure in which the children assist Caspian on a voyage to rescue seven lords of Narnia, banished under Miraz's reign, encountering invisible armies, dragons, and their own nightmares--and sailing to the edge of the world. Lewis's hearty, old-fashioned battle of good vs. evil, brought to life with clashing swords, gorgeous costumes, and some pretty darn good (if sometimes hokey) special effects, makes for an exciting, blustery journey to the world of Narnia. --Karin Snelson
Description
Prince Caspian calls Lucy, Edmund, Peter, and Susan back to the magical land of Narnia in his most harrowing time of need. Led by Aslan, the children help young Caspian to defeat the corrupt King Miraz, and restore Narnia to its full glory. Years later, Lucy and Edmund are sent back to Narnia, along with their insufferable cousin Eustace, for yet another perilous journey. This time the children assist Caspian on a voyage to rescue six lords of Narnia banished under Miraz's reign. Along their journey the children battle dragons and sea serpents, and sail across a golden lake to reach the edge of the world.

Two Great Adventures for One Price!.......2007-04-16
Prince Caspian:
Peter, Lucy, Susan, and Edmund are once again whisked into the land of Narnia when they least expect it: while in a subway together several years after "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe." Narnia has been conquered by a plotting king, and the "old Narnians" are now scattered in hiding from the wicked humans. The children must aid Prince Caspian, the exiled rightful owner of Narnia, and win their kingdom back for the good of all.
This is an epic tale with many new and fascinating creatures introduced, with a central theme of faith. The fact that Lucy is the only one able to see the glimpses of Aslan when the struggle becomes bitter speaks volumes about the virtue of faith, and we can already see in this installment how Susan began to lose hers. The children are not only called to Narnia to save it once again, but to teach the new Prince the value of the old and magical ways of Narnia, and to learn a spiritual lesson themselves.
Voyage of the Dawn Treader:
The fifth book in the series finds Lucy, Edmund, and Eustace joining Prince caspian on a ship called The Dawn Treader, which is setting sail to little known Narnian territories where Caspians uncles have been exiled. Each island explores a different sin by which an uncle fell, and a different magical encounter for the voyagers to face and resolve.
The developement of the mighty mouse Reepicheep is an especially welcome treat for children, and the scene in which Eustace becomes a dragon and embodies his own foul heart, so gaining a sort of enlightenment and a definite change of character, is a particularly skillful use of symbolism.
The reaching of Aslan's kingdom is also a symbol of enlightenment, with the Kingdom of Aslan invoking the Kingdom of Heaven in the reader's mind. The islands can be seen as steps in the path to heaven, and the character developement along the way can be seen as an outline to the steps towards righteousness and spirituality. As a fantasy or as a religious writing, this is a hugely important book!

Voyage into another world.......2006-09-03
C.S. Lewis's "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" recently followed in the footsteps of pal Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings Trilogy," and the sequel "Prince Caspian" is in the working stages.
In the months before it's released, however, it might be time to dust off the 1990 BBC adaptations of "Prince Caspian and the Voyage of the Dawn Treader," crammed into one long movie. The first half suffers from the hokey production of the first film, but the second half blossoms into a fantastical sea voyage.
It's been months since the Pevensies went to Narnia through the wardrobe, and now they waiting for a grim summer vacation. But they don't know what changes have gone on in Narnia. Young Prince Caspian has been raised by his cold uncle King Miraz (Robert Lang) ever since his father's death, with only an old nurse and an aged part-dwarf professor as his friends.
But when Miraz's queen has a baby son, Caspian finds himself on the run, and is taken in by the "Creatures in Hiding," talking beasts and magical people. But that isn't enough to ensure victory. Caspian blows the Horn of Queen Susan, and the Pevensies are whisked back into Narnia to assist the young Prince and his ragtag army in reclaiming his throne.
No sooner have Lucy and Edmund gone to their "awful cousin Eustace"'s house, than a painting on the wall draws them in -- and deposits all three kids beside a giant Narnian ship. Caspian, now a young man, takes them on board and explains that he's on a mission to find some loyal lords who Miraz exiled from Narnia.
But the voyage only gets more dangerous, with the group being captured by slavers, consumed with greed over "gold water," taken captive by invisible creatures, attacked by sea serpents, and Eustace is even turned into a dragon when he greedily claims a treasure trove. But the greatest threat is ahead: the very edge of the world.
It's a tricky thing to take two books and mash them together into one big movie, and it's a credit to the BBC that these stories aren't completely unwatchable. In fact, they unfold at a quick but steady pace, paying plenty of attention to the individual characters. The first half has several flaws, but the second half makes up for that in drama and severity.
This is less fantastical and more battle-oriented than the first movie of this series, especially given Peter's rather flat duel with Miraz right before war breaks out. But the filmmakers take time out to dwell on the minor characters like the sailors, Reepicheep the warrior mouse, and the lovably skeptical dwarf Trumpkin. You gotta love someone called "Big Mick."
Unfortunately, the movies do suffer from some decidedly hokey special effects; dragon-Eustace shifts size and looks absurd, and Miraz's army is clad in Ye Olde Dungeone and Dragone Armoure, complete with black bat motif. Very "Batman goes to the Renaissance Faire." The special effects are redeemed somewhat with a dazzling Dawn Treader, creepy Sea Serpent, and a centaur that still looks better than "Harry Potter's."
Barbara Kellerman still cackles and squeals, and Sophie Wilcox still whines all the time. But the two Caspian actors do an excellent job with their roles, both as a young naive boy and as an experienced king. David Thwaites is the breakout role here, taking Eustace from a whiny brat who gets under everyone's skin to a mature young man who thinks of others first.
Two stories in one -- the first rather flat, the second graced with some genuine chills and heartwarming moments. "Prince Caspian and the Voyage of the Dawn Treader" has some serious flaws, but it's definitely worth watching.
A really nice movie!.......2006-01-03
Prince Caspian and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is a nice movie. The graphics aren't so great, but you have to realize that this movie was made like, in 1990. But if you are a true fan you should get this movie.
-Zach Mashburn
DON'T BOTHER!!!!!!.......2006-01-01
In fifth grade I watched this. It was horrible. The teacher even said that sixth grade "didn't appreciate it". Nobody in the class liked it, and everyone thought it was funny. The costumes were so cheesy a 2 year old could tell you that they're fake, the battles scenes were quick and fake-looking, and the acting made a Kindergarten play look like a high class French opera. But what I hated about this movie the most was that it insulted C.S. Lewis. So many kids thought that Narnia is a waste of time because of that movie. The books are great, but this movie made the characters look like idiots.
only slightly better than its prequel.......2005-11-04
This film like its prequel is a low budget take on C.S. Lewis' masterpiece work,The Chronicles of Narnia. This film is still nowhere near being up to par with the film version currently being filmed. This film's prequel was your usual made for TV crap, actors just grabbed off the street, special effects that were worse than those in the 30's,documentary style cinematography and dullness. In fact the only thing holding together the prequel(The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe) was C.S Lewis' wonderful story. However the BBC obviously realized their mistake. I mean its still not a super special effect film like HP or LOTR but it's OK. The special effects are not as thrown together,it is no longer a word for word copy of the books and the acting has improved by a hair. But you can still tell its made for TV. Apparently BBC was worried that they would not be able to make many more of these movies they combined both Lewis' fourth and fifth book into one. Prince Caspian has been shortened to about an hour and Dawn Treader takes up about an hour and a half. Dawn Treader is much more of a spectacle than its predecessors. I suspect that Silver Chair (the sequel to this) was the worst of the trilogy because no more of the chronicles were made into film after Silver Chair

For its first animated feature, Bavaria Film turned its back on centuries of German folklore for a story linked to the hoopla surrounding the 500th anniversary of Columbus's first visit to the Americas. Customer Reviews:
The worst animated film I have ever seen.......2007-05-19
Although I usually watch films from my childhood that I watched on a frequent basis or films that are of interest to me, I'm going to review a film from my childhood that my sister and I barely watched. This film is The Magic Voyage, a film written by Ute Koll (possible pseudonym for Uwe Boll?). I decided to take it off my dusty shelf and watch it. After all, it can't be that bad.
I made a terrible mistake. This film is so badly made, that any good value of the film is ruined. Not even an all star cast could save it.
Okay, here's the plot: Columbus (Dom DeLuise) has an idea: he thinks the world is square. That is, he thinks the world is square until Pico (Corey Feldman) chews Columbus's square cube to make it more circular, giving Columbus the idea that the world is round. He goes to King Ferdinand (Dan Haggerty) to fund his voyage, but Ferdinand refuses until Queen Isabella (Samantha Eggar) falls in love with Columbus and forces Ferdinand to fund him. Before the voyage, however, Pico falls in love with Marilyn, the Firefly (Irene Cara), who is kidnapped by the Swarm Lord (also Dan Haggerty). So, in addition to finding the New World, Columbus and Pico have to save Marilyn as well.
Before I say anything else, I just want to say one thing: The songs are AWFUL. I could write better songs. Corey Feldman may be a good actor, but he can't sing to save his life. Like another reviewer said, the only good song is the one in the end credits. Moving on...
Bad songs aside, the animation is what ruins the film. It's terrible. Honestly, the "cartoon camera" as you may call it, is terrible, taking extreme close-ups unnecessarily. Characters say things that don't match the lip movements, or at times even match the facial expressions of the character. The timing is bad, at one point Christopher Columbus notices Pico before he even looks down. At times it seems like they're ad-libbing, or even making up the dialogue instead of dubbing it. Frankly, the animation for this film makes Titanic: The Animated Movie look like the animation of Miyazaki films.
The only good thing about this film is the song at the end credits. It's pretty good for a pop song in the 90's. Oh, yeah, and there are some cute jokes, but they really aren't good enough to even try to raise the rating.
It's a very sad thing when you highly anticipate watching a movie but when you watch it you find out it sucks. The Magic Voyage is a fine example. Like I said, other than a few fun jokes and the song in the end credits, this film has no redeeming value. I only recommend it to you if you are a masochist or someone who becomes so curious by reading a negative review for something that they have to see it to believe it.

The best movie in the world!.......2006-10-08
This is the best movie in the world. If you don't like this movie.. you suck!
The world may be round but this picture is flat........2004-09-14
This is one of those films where you just don't have any idea why it was even made. Why in the world would Germans feel drawn to a story featuring Christopher Columbus, a wood worm, a firefly princess and some sort of horribly, horribly animated swarm something-or-other? I just keep asking myself over and over again, "Why?"
The overall animation doesn't even come close to looking like anything out of the 1990's. It is very simplistic, drab and amateur-looking. Supposedly stationary objects jiggle back and forth and the mouths of characters don't match the words being spoken way too many times.
Forget about all of the important ingredients necessary to make a decent animated film. Dom DeLuise and Corey Feldman as your main voice talent? Ugh. Sheesh...and the songs in the film! You will thank me for the following advice: Do not keep any sharp objects lying around while watching this film! If you happen to find a pencil before you find the "Mute" button on the remote, well, you will probably be tempted to use it to puncture your eardrums. The sole good song is the one by Al Jarreau over the closing credits.
I don't even know where to begin as far as the story goes. Something about a wood worm who walks and talks and wears clothes. He has a carrot for a nose and tells Christopher Columbus that the world is actually round and not flat or square. The wood worm, named Pico, snags a girlfriend but she is later kidnapped by a swarm creature. Columbus convinces the Queen to give him three ships so he can sail to Asia and Pico tags along to try and find his girlfriend. They end up landing on a tropical island and find a fortune in gold. Is any of this sounding interesting to you?
This is one of those many films where you just know that the story behind the development of it is infinitely more interesting than the film itself. I don't know why the Germans didn't make something that they could relate to better. They tried to emulate an American animated film but completely and utterly failed. Even early episodes of "The Smurfs" are filled with more complex storytelling and cutting edge animation than this disaster. Bon Voyage!
Enchanting animated feature for the entire family.......2004-08-09
While most of Europe thought that the world was FLAT, Christoper Columbus had a novel idea. He thought the world was SQUARE, and thus begins this fictional and humorous adventure to discover the new world. Seen through the eyes of some funny animals and insect friends of Mr. Columbus, this story accurately portrays the important historical facts of the Columbus mission, while infusing enough music and comedy to hold the attention of kids steadfastly and repeatedly. Featuring a top cast of voice talent, and a stunning orchestral music score, this animated feature from acclaimed filmmakers
Michael Schoemann and Phil Nibbelink has every bit of charm as seen in other films of theirs (i.e., "We're Back", "An American Tale: Fievel Goes West", "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?"). I would strongly recommend this for any family with a Dreamworks or Disney animated video collection.
