This Disney masterpiece from 1940 will hold up forever precisely because it doesn't restrain or temper the most elemental emotions and themes germane to its story. Based on the Collodi tale about a wooden puppet who wants to become a real boy, Pinocchio is among the most magical, mythical, and frightening films to come from the studio in its long history. A number of scenes make permanent impressions on young minds (just ask Steven Spielberg, who quoted the film more than once in Close Encounters of the Third Kind), and the songs ("When You Wish upon a Star") can't be beat. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
A Great Lie Lesson for Pinocchio.......2007-05-22
I love Pinocchio when he lies. His nose grew and grew longer and sure gives me an idea how creative author has. It's original powerful animation that Walt Disney has to present. Also I must add when Pinocchio asking the creator Why, Why, and Why and suddenly I asked my parents why Pinocchio asking Why's. A perfect family animation film.
Was my father favorite carttoon !.......2007-04-13
My father loved Disney 's Pinocchio as a child and I still had the video tape of the carttoon in his memory !
My least favorite Disney animation.......2007-04-09
I've enjoyed a lot of classics by Walt himself - Dumbo, Bambi, 101 Dalmatians, Lady and the Tramp etc. But I just cannot bring myself to like Pinocchio. I'm sorry, but it looked like was made for babies, or four or five year olds at the most. Although, even at the age of five, I found it too childish. I've heard some reviewers say that this film is quite dark, but I just cannot believe that! Firstly, they tried too hard on the animation. It was far too saturated. The colour is all screwed up. The acting is poor. The only good well-developed character is Jiminy Cricket. The other characters are very underdeveloped, so I didn't really care what happened to them. They made Pinocchio really sickly sweet, and I didn't feel for him, he was just annoying. The plot is ridiculous. It was just Pinocchio and Jiminy running into one problem after another. Oh, and the donkey scene is not disturbing - it's just plain stupid!
All in all, Pinocchio is only of interest to VERY young children. Otherwise, do not waste your money. If you want a good family film, rent Amblimation's 'Balto' instead.
ONE OF THE ALL TIME GREATS NEEDS AN UPGRADED EDITION!.......2007-03-13
This is one of Disney's finest animated features and it has not had a complete restoration done!! Mind boggling! The print here looks like it is direct from VHS. I hope there is a 2 disc Platinum edition coming soon?
My Favorite Classic Disney from Years Past.......2007-02-22
This movie is a beautifully-made masterpiece that, very unfortunately, seems to be overlooked sometimes because of other old Disney movies that were made around that time (like Snow White). However, of all the "old" Disney movies (made before the era of Eisner), this is the one that most hits the mark for me. Not only is it an interesting story with involving characters, but the overlooked soundtrack is also quite wonderful. "Hi-Diddle-Dee-Dee" is an old favorite of mine, and not to mention "Little Wooden Head" is a catchy little tune. This is my favorite of the oldies-but-goodies because not only does it completely hit the mark, but it doesn't rely on the old cliche of "princess captured by evil stepmother and then saved later on by a nameless Prince Charming who has no personality whatsoever". Though some of those movies are good, like Snow White, some of them are dull like Cinderella, and this movie doesn't make you make that choice.
Now I haven't always been a fan of this movie; this is more of a "grown-up" movie than many of the others that were made around that time. This is a darker tale than the likes of Snow White, and a more intense and involving one than movies like Cinderella. It also doesn't follow the oft-degraded Disney Formula, because there's no real cookie-cutter "bad guy". And since there's no real cookie-cutter bad guy, it makes it all the more interesting to see four or five villains make their entrances and exits, more like a real-life fairy tale than others. None of the villains "gets what he deserves", like in most Disney movies where they fall to their deaths.
That isn't to say that the other Disney movies aren't good. That is, however, to say that this Disney movie was ahead of its time in its innovations in realistic story developments. Granted, the story itself isn't that realistic, but we all know the story, and can take it for granted. And I'm not saying that the film is COMPLETELY underrated either. Just about everybody's heard the song "When You Wish Upon A Star", and it truly is a wonderfully sweet tune.
Speaking of which, Jiminy Cricket is a masterpiece of a character if there ever was one. And there are plenty of other great characters in this movie too: the old puppet master, Geppetto, who just wants a real boy; Cleo and Figaro, the domesticated fish and jealous cat; and of course many great villains, including Honest John, Stromboli, Lampwick, and of course Monstro, most of whom are also used for on-the-spot comic relief. But despite the comic relief, there are definitely some scenes that are too scary for the youngsters, including quite a few edgy scenes including the mad old puppeteer Stromboli. However, it's not ALL dark, which is good. There are some very fun, and some laugh-out-loud funny, scenes, both for the youngsters and for the adults.
Overall, this truly is a great movie for anybody, but especially for those who have ever been through the struggle of being a real boy. :)

Customer Reviews:
I enjoyed this one.......2007-07-09
This was a really good film and I enjoyed it from beginning to end. It held my interest and the scares were genuine. Compared to other films like "Cinderella" (another Asia Extreme release), this one is much better. The directing and production were superb by the way, without the glossiness marring the storyline; the story is so good on its own that it doesn't need to be dependent on gloss, whereas in other films like "Phone," (one of my least favourite Asia Extreme releases), the glamour and high-tech aspects just can't cut it enough to save the film entirely. I also liked that the actress from "Wishing Stairs" played the victim once again.
Perfect k-horror specimen.......2007-07-01
Many discussions of asian horror and korean horror mention Ryeong (the Ghost); after watching the Tartan Extreme DVD, I can see why. The plot is 99% formulaic, without any of the flourishes that other k-horror movies add to differentiate themselves.
However, this means that it's a perfect specimen to study all the conventions of Korean horror: it covers the usual physical representations, such as the young girl ghost with the long dark hair and the preoccupation with water, but also the deeper cultural issues that differentiate Korean horror from, say, Japanese horror. These include the search for identity and missing memory; a sense of shame about oneself or one's origins; a high school setting (Korean high schools are notoriously difficult and high-pressure); and a group of girls ganging up and victimizing a weaker girl.
The by-the-numbers plot covers all these things as if the director had been working from a checklist. Sadly, it also suffers from the problems that often plague asian horror films, including a paper-thin story and ridiculous non-explanations for key events.
If I was just rating Ryeong on the story or thrills, I'd give it a generous two stars and recommend that you look elsewhere for entertainment. If you're interested in studying asian horror/Korean horror, then this is like cinematic cliffs notes.
SLOWER BUT MORE CEREBRAL THAN THE GRUDGE.......2007-06-15
The Ghost or "Ryeong" is a new Korean horror film, part of the Tartan Asia Extreme line. The film is shackled with the tag line "The Grudge meets Dark Water" and that does a real disservice to the film for a number or reasons. The Ghost doesn't have nearly the scare factor of The Grudge but it has vastly superior characterization and a more complex plot. While the Grudge was a straight horror film, The Ghost is more of a mystery with horror elements.
Min Ji-Won is a student suffering from amnesia. She experienced a traumatic event a year ago and has lost all memories of her past. Something terrible happened but everyone around her avoids revealing the details. Min plans to leave her home and go to school far away to try and get her life back together. This results in an angry conflict with her mother who doesn't want to be left alone and assails Min with a guilt trip. Meanwhile her sometimes boyfriend, Park, does his best to get Min to carry on with life, but he's also unwilling to tell her about her past.
Min has become something of a pariah at school, avoided by her former friends. When those friends end up dying, one by one, apparently of drowning, Min begins experiencing visions and flashbacks. She visits one of her friends who has been hospitalized in a psych ward and she learns about Su-in, who was bullied and humiliated because her family was poor. A shaken Min realizes that she was the ring-leader of her school clique that tormented Su-in, often pretending to be her friend just so they could embarrass her later. A desperate Min tries to unravel the events that led to the tragedy and her loss of memory but Min may not like what she finally uncovers.
The Ghost also gets compared quite a bit to The Ring and yes, we do have that ubiquitous long, dark haired female ghost out for revenge but that's where the comparison ends. There's a distinctly different feel to The Ghost than The Ring and other Asian films. The Ghost really go doesn't go for the quick scares that make you jump out of your seat, preferring a more cerebral approach. You quickly find yourself caught up in wanting to know what happened to Min a year a go that caused her to loser her memories. The ghost became secondary to Min's situation.
Ha-Neul Kim as Min draws upon our sympathies for her dilemma and then promptly turns things upside down when we find out that Min wasn't such a nice girl to begin with. Just when you think things have been resolved, an unexpected twist near the end will change your whole view of the film.
I thoroughly enjoyed all of the performances in The Ghost, especially Ha-Neul Kim's and Ran Choi's, who played Min's rather twisted mother. The soundtrack reminded me of old school horror films that had that pulse-pounding quality to it. I suppose The Ghost could be criticized for being a bit slow in spots and it's a valid point. On the other hand I appreciated Director Tae-kyeong Kim's clever plot and character development. Certainly this is a different film than other Asian horror films but give it a chance, I think you will be surprised.
Despite only 2-stars The Ghost has it's moments........2007-04-27
Asian filmmakers are still trying to milk the ghost story for everything its worth. Over the last couple of years these movies have taken a major downfall. While not horrible it's just the same basic story with different actors.
Some have been enjoyable, but more often than not they just aren't working as well. Director Tae-kyeong Kim really doesn't try and offer much of a difference than what has come before.
He follows the same basic format of films past, while that did work for a while because it was new and when it started to get a little clichéd, filmmakers were able to put their own twist on it, but now there isn't much that can be done differently you just hope the movie can be entertaining.
The Ghost really isn't a bad movie it's just we have seen it done before and seen it done better. Tae-kyeong Kim manages to put together some solid suspenseful moments, but again it just suffers from being too much of a rehash.
The concept while clichéd was interesting, but it just came out too slow paced and not enough set up on the story. The characters were interesting, but they just didn't have enough of a well drawn out plot.
The Ghost can be quite slow at times and the script was rather weak; when it came down to suspense it sort of works, but I already explained why it doesn't totally work. The scares are predictable, but some work well and others come out decent.
The scene in the movie theater was an excellent and creepy scene and showed the potential The Ghost had. There were other moments like that that help The Ghost come out a little better than maybe it should have.
The final act was a bit weak; obviously you know there is gonna be some kind of twist there always seems to be. The twist was alright and not too confusing, but it just doesn't seem to work.
If you aren't sick of the Asian ghost flick The Ghost might be worth watching; for the rest check it out at your own risk. For those new to these movies The Ghost will probably deliver, but you can do better.
In closing, The Ghost really isn't a bad movie by any means. The acting is pretty good, but the script is weak and while there are some suspenseful moments it's just the same movie we have seen plenty of times. Decent watch, but forgettable.
Atmospheric chiller!.......2007-04-26
This Korean horror flick is not very different from some of the other Korean horror movies that have flooded the market recently, but it is still worth a watch. Yes, there is the familiar long-haired spectre that haunts the victims in this movie, but the plot is compelling. It revolves around a college student Ji Won who is suffering from amnesia after a terrible accident. She sees troubling visions, and then some of the girls she knew from before the accident start to mysteriously die...i won;t give too much away, but suffice to say that just as you are figuring things out, there is a twist towards the end of the movie involving the concept of reincarnation & possession. Worth a watch for any Asian horror fan.

The award-winning HBO series Happily Ever After: Fairy Tales for Every Child provides updated cartoon versions of the classics that will hold your kids' attention without banging them on the head with themes. Four half-hour tales are included, each with a bevy of well-known vocal talent. A very sweet version of Pinocchio features a star-studded voice cast, including Will Smith, Chris Rock, Charles S. Dutton, and Della Reese. Although this may make the take sound strictly African American, the spin is decidedly multicultural. Geppetto becomes "George" and Pinocchio, being "chips of pine and oak off the old block" is called "Pinoak." The big spin is on Pinocchio's insect friend, who in this version is a termite named "Woody," played with a rascally style well suited to Chris Rock. For Mother Goose Whoopi Goldberg, Jimmy Smits, and Denzel Washington lend voice as the merriment takes place in Mother Gooseberg Land, where Old King Cole reigns over the likes of Little Miss Muffet, Georgie Porgie, and the rest of the gang who take their poetic direction from the grand dame of rhyme herself, Mother Gooseberg. Creativity oozes from this rollicking rhyme fest, an animated retelling of some well-loved classic nursery rhymes. A simple chore of chopping trees turns into a life lesson for a trio of peasant brothers in this fresh take on The Golden Goose. Drexel, Axel, and Simpleton are three strapping boys who live with their father and mother in a small kingdom. When father sends the older sons to clear the forest, they encounter a wizard--dressed as a beggar--who asks them for some food. Woven throughout this simple tale are subtle messages of the benefits of faith and kindness in everyday living, best understood by children ages 4 and older. The seductive music that the Pied Piper played to woo the children of Hamelin was jazz. At least, that's the take in retelling as old tales mix with new world vision. Here, the selfish King of Hamelin (Samuel L. Jackson) loves to dismiss all politics so he can count his money. Unfortunately, the rat problem becomes so severe that plans must be put into action. When a smooth, jazz-playing stranger (Wesley Snipes) wanders into town proclaiming that he can address the problem, the city council is ready to give him riches.

A Tad Cynical - Maybe / Maybe NOT.......2005-08-31
This CD was bought for my two year old grandson - I reviewed it to make sure it would be acceptable to his parents. . . it may not be . . . for although the look of the characters and the delivery of the tales have changed a great deal, the greed, corruption, cheating and misrepresentation are still within!
It's worth a look see though. But tell me . . . do you think the Pied Piper could be an MJ? After all, he did reap his payment by whisking the children off to a neverland of sweets and play for all their days . . . .

Pinocchio.......2006-06-30
this is a great movie for first graders. It is not as long as a regular movie. The students really liked it.
Not a lick of charm.......2005-12-26
Since the Disney version is not currently for sale, many customers may be tempted to buy this ripoff as a second choice. If you're in that camp, please don't bother. Either wait for the Disney re-release or buy the Disney version used.
It's no surprise that the production values are very poor. That's par for the course with this type of low budget production. Given my daughter's extreme enthusiasm at finally receiving Pinocchio (as a gift) we decided to give it a go. The adults in the room found it painful to watch given the poor characterization, the plot that jumps around so much as to be completely incoherent and the overall cynical low-budget approach to the material. My 4-year-old found the entire plot and the world the video presents to be scary and depressing. She was actually crying at the end of it, even despite the supposedly happy ending. She insisted on watching through to the end in hopes that some ray of light would appear to lift her spirits -- no such luck! The good characters are completely unconvincing. I hate to say this about any movie, but it just felt evil through and through. This version lacks the charm of the Jiminy Cricket character, and their version of Pinocchio has no personal warmth or other redeeming characteristics to draw you in. His relationship with Gepetto seems artificial and forced. There are no warm or positive elements to counteract the pervasive evil of the world Pinocchio falls into. And, of course, none of the charming musical numbers that kids love so much.
Overall, just a horrendous experience for young and old. Avoid this one if you can.

Because if he or she had really written a review for GoodTimes' Pinocchio, he or she wouldn't have said that this film is evil or depressing because it simply isn't anything like that. This version of Pinocchio is one of the most touching animated adventures to come out of the studio. There's a lot of emotion and heart and when I was a little boy, this film used to make me cry. The last few moments are absolutely moving.
The story begins when a spark of magic scapes from the home of the Blue Fairy and lands on Gepetto the toymaker's fireplace. The spark of magic blends into one of the logs in the fire, it is this very log that Gepetto then turns into a toy all for his own. He creates a little puppet which immediatly comes alive, for it had been blessed with the Blue Fairy's magic. Gepetto sends his boy to school, but being a puppet just learning about the world, he decides to instead follow temptation and turn to see a puppet play instead. Pinocchio lives through a number of adventures like this, being trusty of unkind strangers and lying to get out of trouble, but when he becomes the scare that threatens the very Blue Fairy's life, he promises to be a good boy and is given his heart's greatest desire.
I am so sick of people comparing GoodTimes films with Disney films and even more sick of adults expecting to be pleased with a film that is meant for smaller children. Many of my friends have seen this wonderful animated tale when they were *children* and they all love it. Adults have a harder time appreciating simple beauty and are too judgemental, these films should be reviewed by children, not grown-ups. This was the review of an open-minded teen-ager.

Nearly abandoned by its distributor and savaged by critics, Roberto Benigni's Pinocchio is an object lesson in the hazards of success. Bolstered by his Oscar®-winning triumph Life Is Beautiful, the popular Italian actor-director-comedian was given carte blanche and chose Carlo Collodi's classic 1885 fairy tale as his next lavish project. This sumptuous production literally glows with traditional Italian craftsmanship, from delightful costumes and storybook sets by the late, great production designer Danilo Donati (whose last film this was) to the radiant palette of Dante Spinotti's masterful cinematography. This is one of the most beautiful of all Italian films, which only makes its shortcomings more conspicuous. At 50, Benigni is utterly wrong as the puppet who yearns to be a real boy, and his wife Nicoletta Braschi is similarly miscast as the Blue Fairy. Even worse, Breckin Meyer's English dubbing for Pinocchio is insufferably shrill, draining the appeal of Benigni's own performance. Pinocchio has many laudable qualities, but genuine enchantment is nowhere to be found. --Jeff Shannon

suspend logic.......2007-06-05
Odd, so many people writing that Begnini at 50 wasn't believable as a puppet who talks. What is believable about a puppet who talks? Boys who turn into donkeys? People who are swallowed by sea monsters? Maybe the idea WAS to depict the idea that the self-centered, tantrum-prine child is still there at some level, even in adults - yes ... seeing people's behavior in traffic, I think it is.
I loved this movie, and more importantly, so did my 2 and 1/2 year-old son, who is able to suspend all logic. When we watch the scene in the soon-to-be-donkey land, with Begnini swinging above the playing "boys", he says "Again". We watch it again, and he giggles with delight, again. He doesn't turn to me and say - you know - all those adults playing children are really miscast.
Very Entertaining.......2005-11-18
I don't see what all of the criticism is about. Just because a film doesn't fit into the Americanized-Hollywood mold is no reason to toss it out. It's clear from reading these reviews that some of us have lost our ability to see life through the simplicity of a child's eyes.
I found this film delivers on it's goal: to be entertaining and enjoyable to watch. The directing of this movie was above creative standards and it really showed in the photography and editing. I would highly recommend the original Italian version to others without reservation.
As for the English-overdubbed version... well, it's overdubbed... what else can you say? If you watch it, you'll receive a mixed performance because you're watching Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde play the same character. I wouldn't even consider it.
Interesting!.......2004-12-22
Without regurgitating what seemingly every reviewer of this film felt HAD to be said, I will say that this is certainly the most interesting of ALL Pincchio movies/adaptations in history!
For one, and this MUST be said again, to watch a 50 year old man play the part of a little wooden puppet is a exercise in sheer open-mindedness and tolerance!
In fact, watching the entitre film (ORIGINAL VERSION ONLY PLEASE) one get's the impression that Benigni favors adults over children, even in a childrens' story, as ALL characters are played by grossly overaged/sized adult actors.
The movies is funny though...in a strange way.
The biggest drawback aside from his age, is Benigni's un-naturally high pitched voice and penchant for rambling dialogue.
As a student of the Italian language, it can be hard to follow his incessant jumble of non-sensical jibberish.
At the same token, it is Benigni's annoying acting style that makes this film fun to watch.
What makes this film even quirkier is the relationship between a very grown Pinocchio and a rather attractive Blue Haired Fairy. There were times when I thought Pinocchio would just grab his beloved fairy and use his long nose to work his own brand of magic on HER. Sounds bad I know, but if you've seen this film you'll have no choice but to agree that there is waaayyy more physical chemistry between Pinocchio and the Fairy than ANY childrens story ought to have.
I can see why the critics AND the vast majority of viewers hated this one. It really isn't a GOOD film in a traditional sense.
Where this film shines is with those of us who have an appreciation for the off-beat and downright different.
This movie is both, which is why I bought it in the first place.
Will I recommend this to all you dear morally upright, purist partents out there for your kids to watch? Certainly not!
This is a non-sexual, but yet very adult oriented movie. Especially for dumbed down Disney raised US viewers.
Is this really a 45 million dollar flop? Absolutely!
Do I enjoy this film whenever I watch it? I most certainly do.
This film is underappreciated.......2004-04-09
This is a very well crafted and entertaining movie, but of course must be watched in Italian, with the subtitles. If you like Benigni you will certainly enjoy this film--as usual he shines with comedic brilliance. The movie is absolutely hilarious in some parts, and very touching in others. Benigni's acting is great, but there are also great performances by the supporting cast members. This movie is beautifully photographed and cleverly written and it's a shame it was released in 'dubbed' form in the U.S. Dubbed movies are always bad, but the actor who did the voice for Benigni's Pinocchio was just not a good choice at all!
Interesting ideas, but falls flat on all levels........2003-10-26
Roberto Benigni received extremely harsh critical attack for his recent rendition of Collidi's classic fairy tale of a puppet who wished to become a wooden boy. Part of this is because Miramax decided to cut the film from 110 minutes to 99(!) -- often a bad mistake, as it can damage the effect of a film. But they added another slapping blow by overdubbing the character voices. In a foreign animated film, this works more successfully because an animation cel stands on its own. Unfortunately, it's not so in the case of live action. The line-readings of the voice actors clash horrendously with the moving mouth of the foreign language, and, here, in PINOCCHIO, it's just really awful. I only listened to bits and pieces of the dub, and although the voice cast is certainly talented and does a respectable job (except for Breckin Meyer as Pinocchio himself), their words are so poorly synchronized with the moving mouth that the results come across as disastrous.
Although the film holds well together in its native tongue and uncut version, one cannot help but wonder just what went wrong with this production. PINOCCHIO is definitely an ambitious picture; the costumes, set designs and cinematography are all strikingly beautiful. There are also lots of staggering special effects shots, from a carriage drawn by mice to an enormous shark in the sea. Such effects made the movie the most expensive in Italy --$45 million in total--; and Benigni should consider himself fortunate that it broke even in box office receipts. In America, however, it didn't have the same reception. Either because of the cutting and disastrous dubbing (despite the presence of big names in the cast such as John Cleese, Eric Idle, Cheech Marin, and Glen Close), or the fact that people could not accept this version, the movie was a dismal failure.
Part of the problem is the decision of having Benigni himself playing Pinocchio. I mean, come on! Benigni is WAY too old for Pinocchio, and a lot of the other "kids" in this picture are played by grown-ups! Somehow it didn't come off on me as glaring that such was the case, but I can just imagine why critics and film buffs would slamdunk this film for that cause. There are plenty of interesting concepts and ideas for the film; the Blue Fairy's costumes are gorgeous, and the image of a butterfly present in the film is very nice, but that's not enough to save this poor, troubled picture. There's hardly a sympathetic character in the movie; Pinocchio is supposed to be disobedient, yes, but here he's portrayed as a crazy maniac, refusing to behave or do anything good until he is goaded into it. The Talking Cricket is not much better. If you were spoiled by Jiminy Cricket from the (far superior) Disney version, prepare to be shocked - he not only looks a man with artificial antennas placed on his head, he also acts condescendingly. Instead of being encouraging, he comes across as a sarcastic, unhelping little jerk who just badmouths the "boy" instead of coaching him. Granted, I'm aware that this is true of the original Collidi tale (Disney "softened up" Pinocchio's personality for his film), yet here it's executed so awkwardly that it becomes difficult to become involved in this film. It also is not a very clear, focused picture: it's too dark and menacing for youngsters and too insane to appeal to older audiences.
A modern misfire, this version of PINOCCHIO is more likely to be remembered for its cinematography rather than its misguided story and below-average dubbing. (Even on the Italian original, there is some gratingly bad acting.)
Surprisingly, even though Miramax butchered this film in its theatrical release, they certainly produced a great package with this DVD. It's a two-disc set, complete with a very gorgeous transfer, and two different versions of the movie. One disc is the horribly recut U.S. release while the other is the uncut Italian version. Strangely, even an English language track is offered on the second disc as well, and it includes all the stuff that was cut from the U.S. premiere! Very interesting indeed, even if the dubbing still can't hold a candle to some of the better ones I've heard (mainly from animation films, because they don't have the same lip-sync problem that live-action ones do). Sadly, though, even the presence of the uncut version doesn't change the fact that this movie is a disappointing experience. It's gorgeous to look at, but it's certainly not a classic by any means.

Apparently aimed at very small children and the simple-minded, adults may decide that the best aspect of this kiddie flick is the clamshell box with its dual image "Magic Action Art." Though strong technically, the blend of digital effects, animation, mattes, and miniatures is eventually too much of a hodgepodge. The plot is a confusing jumble of classic fairy-tale elements and jarring contemporary accents, attitudes, and lowbrow humor. The only real performers are Martin Landau, who is very classy as Geppetto, and a sad-looking Geneviéve Bujold. Syrupy child-star Jonathan Taylor Thomas makes you long to toss another puppet on the fire. However, the story basically follows Carlo Collodi's fairy tale and the music is enjoyable, especially the songs by Stevie Wonder. This should maintain the interest of youngsters age 8 and under. --Rochelle O'Gorman
Customer Reviews:
Sicko Pinocchio.......2007-05-18
I watched most of this movie with a Kindergarten class as a substitute teacher. I found it totally inappropriate for children and was shocked to see that it was rated G. It has many very dark scenes and a considerable amount of violence as well as several sexually suggestive scenes. I'm sure many of the kids had nightmares after watching it. Any parent should consider this a PG-13 film and then be cautious about kids seeing it. For the little ones the Disney version is the way to go.
for OLDER viewers.......2006-09-03
Contrary to the initial review by Rochelle O'Gorman, this film is NOT for the SIMPLE-MINDED, nor is it appropriate for YOUNG viewers!!! It is for OLDER viewers and interesting only because of the ANIMATION techniques, filming in Prague, costumes, scenery, acting, etc. DISNEY is the only true, traditional Pinocchio---with special music, Christian theme with angels, a real friend in Jiminy Cricket, the gold fish, the cat--much more imaginative and suitable for very young children AND adults!!!
Nice-Looking, Nicely Done Pinocchio.......2006-04-15
This is one of the better "family films" that adults would still enjoy, and I don' mean to use that as a clich?. Suffice to say it's a fast-moving story, is creatively done and looks super on DVD. This was a stunner, visually-speaking.
The creativity - especially for a film 10 years old - involves the wonderful special-effects that make the famous wooden puppet so lifelike. I haven't seen it in eight or nine years but when this came out first on VHS I remember being shocked at the visuals and how real things looked. The DVD enhances it another notch.
This is not an animated film, and the story is a bit different from other versions. How faithful this is to the original story, I cannot tell you, because I never was a big fan of the story. I can tell you, however, that Martin Landau is very good playing Pinochhio's creator "Geppetto."
I found it interesting that the cricket in this story was called "Pepe," not Jiminy Cricket. At any rate, this is a nicely-done version of the famous kids' story.
Charming version of old favorite.......2004-12-02
Definitely a keeper in the family movie collection. I had already seen the movie and decided to buy it and so when pucrhasing at Amazon I was so surprised at a few poor reviews listed for this movie that I took time to write. It is a great production of a family favorite depicting old time values and morals while entertaining due to engrossing and almost believable characters of this old family favorite. My 6 and 5 yr old kids were enthralled and describe it as their favorite movie ever. Even Dad stayed awake through the entire movie! It may not work for teenagers but for a relaxing family movie evening, you will not be disappointed and I will keep our copy for ever.
WOODY. 16th april 2004........2004-04-16
A great family film, just depends what type of film you like, in my opinion, this is a suitable film for any age. If you don't like this sort of film then this isn't your type. Even so it is a brill film see it.

Customer Reviews:
good b-movie........2006-04-04
An accused child murderer has been arrest five years ago, his lawyer ( Rosalind Allen) believes he's innocient as he may think that the Pinocchio puppet he made for his son told him to kill children and him. She couldn't stop his execution in time, however she accidenly brings home with her the Pinocchio doll from the office, her daughter "Zoe" ( Brittany Alyse Smith) is having a birthday party as she mistakens the doll as a gift. The next days seems strange as she has a relationship with the puppet as strange accidents start to happen, her mother is concerned about her daughter and must find out what is causing these bizare accidents.
Entertaining low budget horror thriller that is also a psychological one as well! it's one of those movies that are kind of a puzzle movie on who is the killer, is it the kid or the puppet who is doing the killing? or is it schizophrania in the child? the acting is good for a b-movie and the puppet is quite a creepy little one.
The DVD is practically bareboned with no trailer or extras at all, just good picture with decent sound and a full screen presentation.
Also recommended: "Magic" ( 1978), " Trilogy of Terror", " Dolls", " The Shining", " Pin..", "May", " Dead of Night ( 1945)", "Child's Play series", " Dolly Dearest", " Devil Doll ( 1964)", " Se7en", " Silence of the Lambs", " Psycho ( 1960)", " Puppet Master", " Making Contact ( a.k.a. Joey)", " Evil Dead II", "Scream", " American Psycho", "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer", " Tourist Trap".
Good Horror, Surprise Ending.......2006-02-19
This is a horror film about a little girl who becomes unwittingly possessed by the soul of a demonic puppet. It isn't clear how the Pinnochio doll became demonic, but in the opening, a little boy, possessed by the same doll, is killed and buried by a man who knew the truth--and was himself executed.
The best scene is when the little girl is pushed to the grass, but the acting of her fellow classmates leaves much to be desired: Dakota Fannings, they're not.
When the killer is revealed in the conclusion, it will sadden you, and beckons for a sequel.
Excellent horror. I suggest it highly.
Pinocho's revenge -- OK.......2006-02-01
My wife and kids saw this movie on cable and I missed it. They said it was great and funny so I thought I would get it. It was OK--the production was a bit 70's videotape look, special effects 5 out of 10, acting 6 out of 10, story predictable.
There was a very nice nude sequence about 4 minutes long where Pinochio watches the maid (young and pretty) get out of the shower. That probably saved the movie for me.
The one thing I did relate to was the sound of "pitter-patter" as Pinochio ran across the floor to get his next victim. Parents will recall the unmistakeable sound of small children when they hear this. It is somewhat disturbing to hear this sound that brings up happy and joyfull memories associated with a pending killing.
It was worth $10 - $12 bucks for a laugh, good party movie.
for lovers of killer doll movies...but it's a bit generic.......2005-09-26
While this feels mostly like a made-for-cable-tv doll movie to cash in on made-for-theaters doll movies, it's still a fun one to add to your doll collection when you've run out of options such as the chuckies, trilogy of terror, dolly dearest, the puppet master series, and of course, DOLLS. The death count is very low, and the gore is really minimal, but there is some MAJOR full-frontal female nudity. There are some very suspenseful moments, but not a whole lot of impressive moving doll scenes. The little girl who acquires the doll is obnoxious and snotty and totally unlikeable--but what makes this different than your standard Chucky movie is that even the audience is unclear as to whether the doll or its young owner is the real killer.
This DVD is pretty no frills. FULL SCREEN, Dolby 2.0, with english or spanish language, and no extras. The film itself is a bit grainy, and not the cleanest transfer. But, it's not much of a surprise considering this isn't one of the most popular doll films. Get it if you must own every killer doll movie made, otherwise, rent it on a night when you're doing a horror marathon with some other stronger titles.
sexy german chick.......2004-07-08
this is an obvious rip off of the talking tina and chucky movies.nobody whose sold out is in this one.this will definately scare your kids!it looks as if they spent about a buck fifty throwing this one together.chucky is far more likeable than pinnochio, but only the last childs play movie is better than this one.only those with a dark sense of humor will enjoy this one.some of the humor is rather dark, like a recording of a man screams as hes being burned alive.there is this sexy german baby sitter chick in thisone.they show her all in the shower.this is easily the best part.

This musical adaptation of Pinocchio from 1976 features the incomparable talents of Danny Kaye, Sandy Duncan, Flip Wilson, and Clive Revill. Framed by the story of a young theater girl's desire to study and work apart from her father, the story of Pinocchio is presented as a subplay with the young girl as Pinocchio (Sandy Duncan) and her father as Geppetto (Danny Kaye). The famous Carlo Collodi story of a lonely woodcutter whose marionette comes to life is presented faithfully and engagingly. The costumes are bright and fun, and the sets are suitably simple. The music, which features many Billy Barnes songs, showcases everything from big Broadway sounds to some truly beautiful ballads. Add to that lots of energetic dancing choreographed by Ron Field, and the result is a compelling performance by Kaye, Duncan, and the rest of the cast. --Tami Horiuchi

Pinocchio.......2006-06-30
It is a good movie for young elementary students. It was very good.
creates great childhood memories!.......2004-08-16
I saw this movie as a child so many times I wore out not one, but two VHS tapes! I am so excited to finally own this musical on DVD because it is a favorite of mine and my brothers growing up. The colors and music in this video stayed with me for a dozen years.. I can still remember all the songs from my favorite kiddie movie! This is definitely a must for anyone with kids. It's a different twist on the classic Pinocchio, with real actors and plots twists for older kids and adults to enjoy. Like I said, a must see! Don't pass this up!
Pinocchio Needs More Than A Nose Job.......2003-03-15
To make the excuse for the low-budget sets and special effects, this production decides to frame a story within a story by means of a traveling "third-rate" theatre company performing the play "Pinocchio." The TV video production would have been much better off sticking to the story of "Pinocchio" and giving up the ridiculous idea of the traveling theatre company sub-plot. By the TV production calling the theatre company "third-rate" does that mean that think that their own TV production is "third-rate"? Danny Kaye as Gepetto was anything but third rate! He knows how to deliver touching songs like "I'm Talking To Myself" composed by Billy Barnes. I believe that children would have understood and enjoyed the story more if they would have cast a child in the role of Pinocchio. Though Sandy Duncun did a great job, nothing can replace the magic of a real child. Taking in the whole TV production, I feel that "Pinocchio" is worth watching, though it would have looked better if only the fairy could have helped to edit the script.
Pinocchio.......2002-01-15
This movie was not what I thought it would be. Its quite good. Danny Kaye his here in his older years and everything you see in this movie is something that you have seen before. He plays 2 or more characters and pulls it off very well. The movie is kinda silly because it's on stage and is more for children than for grown ups. It just shows the classic tale of Pinocchio, how he becomes a real life boy and learns about life. This movie is worth buying and should be in every home, where a Danny Kaye fan is.

All nine of Disney's first collection of animated classics on DVD are included in this set. Some of the nine titles include bonus features, and the DVD format will provide optimum sound and picture quality for the young and old collector alike. The crown jewels are Pinocchio and The Little Mermaid. The former celebrates its 60th anniversary with a brand new print, while the latter is the 1989 film that revitalized Disney's animation wing and brought new audiences to the art form. Both offer Oscar-winning songs. Two of the popular classics from the '60s are represented with 101 Dalmatians and The Jungle Book, which was the last animated feature that Walt Disney directly worked on and which saved the animation department when it was a box-office hit in 1967. Hercules and Mulan make great strides in the look of animation. The mythical figures of the former are based on the radical designs of Gerald Scarfe, and the latter makes bold advancements in computer animation in the refreshingly unknown legend of a Chinese girl. The collection rounds out with Lady and the Tramp in a grand widescreen format, the charming Peter Pan that hardly shows its age, and 1998's The Lion King II: Simba's Pride, a made-for-video sequel. Although the sequel is entertaining, it's frustrating to note the original The Lion King has been kept out of circulation completely for a few years (as Disney does with many classics), gearing towards a grand future release into theaters. --Doug Thomas

classic? psheah. whatever........2007-01-16
3 stars for being Disney.
Minus 2 for not having Aladdin.
That is all.
NINE WRONG ITEMS.......2006-12-25
I ordered the walt disney animated anthology the classic collector's set which was suppose to come with, the little mermaid, hercules, mulan, pinocchio, the jungle book, peter pan, lady and the tramp, the lion king II:simba's pride and one hundred and one dalmations instead we were sent cars, pirates of the caribbean the curse of the black pearl and dead man's chest, the sword in the stone, the rescuers, bedknobs and broomsticks, herbie fully loaded, miracles, and the shaggy dog....very disappointing for the kids christmas morning!
Well priced.......2006-09-25
Despite what other reviewers are saying, this collection is a good buy! Why, price AND collectors value. Each of this dvd's are limitted addition- which DON'T get re-released. And the prices... lets go over them, according to Disney's collectors item list.
The Little Mermaid 29.99
The Jungle Book 34.99
Hercules 34.99
Mulan 34.99
Peter Pan 54.99
Pinocchio 34.99
Lady and the Tramp 34.99
Lion King II 29.99
This adds up to over $270. But the set is retailed for $500, how is this still a good deal? Well disney doesn't sell Peter pan, Pinocchio, Lady and the Tramp as limitted addition and they are hard to find, these prices are based on (with the excetpion of Peter Pan) what they were last officially sold at. What you find is Special and Platinum addition. Further more in 2007 Hercules and Lion II are expected to come out on Platinum, meaning the Limitted Addition ones will be worth more. Yes, limitted addition doesn't have two discs poor movie, but collector wise, its worth more.
Blockbuster has a more accurate price list for when they by these movies. To buy these BRAND NEW, the cheapest one is The Little Mermaid (not in Limitted but in Special Addition) and that is $50. Other such as Hercules are worth $75. Thats adds up to at least $600. So now, its cheaper.
More so, some of these movies have already been released in platinum, meaining they won't EVER be released again.
This is a good deal, and as you can see the so-called "collectors" who troll it haven't done any research.
For those of you who buy it just to watch it, I suggest buying the cheap platinum additions.
Also, a fact for those angered by a sequel appearing. Lion King II sold better than the orignal Lion King, and better then any other Disney Sequel. In fact, its is one of the top 20 Disney movies that sold well. Seems most Disney "fans" loved this movie (and I find it one of the only good Disney Sequels.)
For any of you wanting to start a Disney Colelction that's sure to make a return on your investment- buy this if you can afford it.
A Comment about the reviewer "A Viewer".......2006-09-04
The older titles are not in widescreen because in the days when they came out in theatres, the theatre screens were not widescreen. So it is observing their original aspect ratio. Maybe you should do some research before you review something.
I do however not understand why Lion King II made it on this set...I hate the disney sequels.
I agree it blows.......2006-06-27
I own all of these movies already and I can honestly tell you this collection is a rip off. They're asking way too much for so few movies. Now, you add a few more classics and make them all 2-disc special editions, then hell yeah I'll pay $500 for it. But this just isn't worth it, collection set or not.
