The legend of Mississippi blues master Robert Johnson has served as a fountainhead for generations of blues and rock musicians, as well as a powerful fable for the dark, often violent mysteries of delta blues. Johnson's mythic deal with the Devil, in exchange for his extraordinary musical gifts, has become a fixture in blues lore and an example of the enduring pull of superstitions that can be traced back to Mother Africa and Yoruba deities. Producer-director Walter Hill (The Long Riders, Streets of Fire) sought to put this uniquely American mystery on film, but when he was unable to secure a script devoted directly to Johnson himself, Hill bravely decided to proceed with a more oblique, allegorical story that retold the Satanic bargain through a fictionalized drama set in the present day. In this 1986 feature, the hero is Eugene, a classically trained guitar virtuoso pulled toward the earthier powers of blues. When he stumbles across a lost blues legend, Willie Brown (a real blues figure and Johnson peer known for his partnerships with Charley Patton and Son House, among others), Eugene begins an odyssey back to the delta country and the crossroads of the title, where both Willie and Johnson had traded their souls for blues power, to help the surviving bluesman renegotiate terms.

An opening sequence, shot in sepia-toned black and white, dramatizes Johnson's own supernatural encounter, as well as one of the bluesman's historic Texas recording sessions, and Hill's visuals combine with frequent collaborator Ry Cooder's reliably authentic slide guitar to offer a promising glimpse of cinematic conjury. Even the satanic villain--a grinning huckster named Scratch--honors the trickster figure familiar to African American superstitions, rather than a generic devil. Willie Brown (Joe Seneca) is likewise a convincing link to the blues past, but Hill's central casting choice--Ralph (The Karate Kid) Macchio--sacrifices all for marquee value, a Hobson's choice that casts a shadow of unintended parody across the film. Macchio's earlier character, not Scratch, haunts this film, and even a nifty duel between Eugene, his slashing fretwork supplied off-camera by Cooder, and Scratch's ax-wielding henchman, heavy metal virtuoso, and one-time Frank Zappa protégé Steve Vai, can't safely rescue the film. --Sam Sutherland

5 out of 5 stars Harp and Guitar.......2007-06-15

If you like harmonica and guitar you'll love this movie. It's like the devil went down to Georgia with harp and guitar. Good storie good music.

3 out of 5 stars OK Movie.......2007-05-09

Ralph Macchio got to play a semi-grown up and there was blues. It was a fine movie. Joe Seneca was always good.

4 out of 5 stars for blues lovers.......2007-04-30

Released on VHS tape in the middle of the Eighties, this film is now available on DVD (Region 1 code). It is the (light) story of a trip through the blues and its roots. A young white guitar player (Ralph Macchio) meets in a hospital an old black bluesman (Joe Seneca) and they decide to leave together for the Delta, looking for the crossroads where the bluesman sold his soul to the Devil when he was young and there try to break such contract. During the journey, they establish a master/pupil relationship (Ralph Macchio seems to be specialized in such roles: do you remember Karate Kid?) and go through some hardships till they reach the crossroads and meet the Devil. This meeting leads the two friends to the final challenge: if the young guitarist beats Devil's pupil (Steve Vai) in a blues competition, the old bluesman's soul will be saved. This is the highlight of the film, where the two competitors challenge each other playing blues standards in their different ways: by one hand Steve Vai (in a very good form) plays his pieces in an aggressive "hard-rock" style, while, on the other hand, the boy (but with Ray Cooder's hands! Look at the end titles to discover the real player...) plays his guitar in a slide traditional way, with a bottleneck. This is the story. As for the rest, the film is a just a comedy, with a mix of flavors, lightly served: Robert Johnson's life, Faust, Karate Kid, and - fortunately - some good music, performed in the topical parts of the show (apart from the final duel, there are some nice performances in two-three moments of the film). So, do not surprise if this film will not win any Oscar, but the "crunch" sound of Macchio-Cooder's Telecaster, played with an old valve guitar amp, still sounds very nice to electric blues listeners.
P.S.: the soundtrack is available on CD but WITHOUT the songs of the final challenge.

4 out of 5 stars A fun little piece.......2007-04-07

Not every thing that I find entertaining has to have merit nor worth. This has neither. It's just entertaining. The story holds extra merit if you are at all familiar with the Story of Blues Guitarist Robert Johnson selling his soul to the Devil at the crossroads in exchange for playing the Guitar.

5 out of 5 stars This movie has a great story, an incredible soundtrack and great characters.......2007-03-19

In the 1980s there was a great blues music revival, much like the sixties, except the young musicians who created it were more knowledgeable and better educated than the generation before; probably because they were the children of that generation and were standing on their shoulders.
Some of this revival took place in cinema with movies "The Blues Brothers", "The Commitments" and this one.
These movies actually helped the entertainment mainstream find it's way to great black artists like B. B. King, John Lee Hooker and many others who never had more than cult followings previous to this.
Many sixties blues fans never knew where the Crossroads was or the significance of Bob Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited", the legend of Robert Johnson, the fabulous musical history of Clarksdale Mississippi or Highway 49.
This film explores those modern American legends as the historical (there really was such a person who was a noted bluesman) yet fictional (this story is fiction) character Willie Brown, played by Joe Seneca; takes a Juilliard of music student on a tour of the Mississippi delta on a quest to redeem his soul from the devil by a guitar duel to the eternal death with Jack Butler (played by Steve Vai).
The strongest point in this film is the music itself; the soundtrack by Ry Cooder and including his incredible jam with the great Steve Vai.
If you're white and a blues fan, this movie is a fantastical microcosm of the aforementioned white blues revivals. If you're black and a blues fan, it's a slice of Black Americana being discovered by the mainstream and you can probably enjoy it tongue in cheek if you're a hardcore music fan.
I loved it.

5 out of 5 stars Elvis, That's the Way It Is.......2007-07-03

Peter Watkins's fascinating biopic about a troubled, nontraditional figure is itself iconoclastic, as it approaches telling Munch's life story through a mosaic of re-enactments, personal diary readings, and faux documentary footage, often repeated for effect. Distant from his father, Munch finds sustenance in a short-lived affair with Mrs. Heiberg (Fraas), a married woman from whom he draws inspiration. Using a variety of sound and color elements to convey Munch's state of mind, Watkins's engrossing film mirrors the inner turmoil of its talented subject.

5 out of 5 stars ELVIS AT HIS BEST ON STAGE IN LAS VEGAS!.......2007-06-17

This is the best footage of Elvis on stage in Las Vegas. The original release included a lot of fan interview footage which was kind of boring, but it also included added footage of Elvis singing songs which were eliminated in the 2001 "Special Edition" version. Both versions are included in this set, so if you don't have both and want them, this is the set for you.

Both a classic documentary and a vital pop-cultural artifact, D.A. Pennebaker's portrait of Bob Dylan captures the seminal singer-songwriter on the cusp of his transformation from folk prophet to rock trendsetter. Shot during Dylan's 1965 British concert tour, Don't Look Back employs an edgy vérité style that was, and is, a snug fit with the artist's own consciously rough-hewn persona. Its handheld black-and-white images and often-gritty London backdrops suggest cinematic extensions of the archetypal monochrome portraits that graced Dylan's career-making early-'60s album jackets.

Pennebaker's access to the legendarily private troubadour enables us to witness Dylan's shifting moods as he performs, relaxes with his entourage (including then lover Joan Baez, road manager Bob Neuwirth, and poker-faced manager Albert Grossman), and jousts with other musicians (notably Animals alumnus Alan Price and Scottish folksinger Donovan), fans, and press. It's a measurement of the filmmaker's acuity that the conversations are often as gripping as Dylan's solo performances. Grossman's machinations with British promoters, Baez's hip serenity, a grizzled British journalist's surrender to the fact of Dylan's artistry, and the artist's own taunting dismissal of a clueless sycophant are all absorbing.

With the exception of the studio recording of "Subterranean Homesick Blues," the live performances (including five newly restored, complete audio tracks excised from the original film but included on the DVD version) are constrained by crude audio gear. Their urgency, however, is timeless, as is Pennebaker's film, a legitimate cornerstone for any serious rock video collection. --Sam Sutherland

5 out of 5 stars It all stays good.......2007-05-28

I first saw this film as part of the Vancouver Film Festival one summer evening in the late sixties. It engrossed me then and in its VHS form and in this new double cd release. What's great about this issue is the "out takes" have been reworked into a companion piece that accompanies the original release in this package. The commentaries supplied by D.A. Pennebaker and Bob Nieuwerth are fun and insightful. I loved it. and can't wait for someone to do a similar treatment to "Eat The Document", Dylan's tour with the Hawks a year and a bit later.

5 out of 5 stars Don't look Back.......2007-05-24

I always wanted to have this film; and now it's even better. It was a movie that was only seen by a few; now it can be seen by everyone. Thanx for having it.

documentary any better than it was, but they did. Thank you.

What can he say? Where else can he go? Any damn place he wants to. This is great stuff showing exactly why Bob Dylan stands well above any other popular culture figure of the 20th century.

Oh, Wow! This is a DVD that will be liked by all who enjoy M E H D I, E N Y A or even Loreena Mckinnett. It is the very essence of good new age. So tranquil, yet so spirited, this cd is a refreshing break from my well-worn collection, I just keep wanting to listen to it over and over again. I am amazed! It reminds me somewhat of Celtic Women, but still very unique. This is music to the soul. Absolutely relaxing, as well.

If you come across a better performance and production quality than this DVD, please let me know. After watching this DVD several times, I become paranoid that I may not be able to enjoy another DVD if it's not close to the caliber of this one. My 12-yr old son, who never sit still and finished a DVD before, let alone a "musical" DVD, watched this DVD 2 consecutive times, back to back. Amazing.

The most phenomenal recording in rock & roll history is thoroughly examined in Pink Floyd: The Dark Side of the Moon. The Floyd's 1973 masterpiece remained on bestseller charts for nearly 14 years, and its enduring importance is honored here by all four members of Pink Floyd and key personnel (engineer Alan Parsons, mixing supervisor Chris Thomas, sleeve designer Storm Thorgerson, and others) who played essential roles in the landmark album's creation. Produced for the Classic Albums series that originally aired on VH-1, this thorough and thought-provoking study highlights a track-by-track dissection of the LP's master tapes (including the spoken-word passages that bookend the album), superbly interlaced with archival footage, early demo tapes, concert animations, and latter-day acoustic performances by David Gilmour, Roger Waters, and Richard Wright to demonstrate each track's contribution to the final mix--a sonic exploration that extends to the illuminating bonus features. Informative interviews abound (including Rolling Stone senior editor David Fricke), and much-deserved credit is given to saxophonist Dick Parry, solo vocalist Clare Torry, and former Capitol Records chairman Bhaskar Menon, who fostered the album's U.S. commercial success. For Floyd fans, musicians, and studio technicians alike, this is a must-have addition to any DVD library. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" Classic Album is the creative story behind the masterpiece: "Dark Side Of The Moon". "Dark Side Of The Moon" transformed Pink Floyd from art house favorites to global, stadium superstars. Prior to 1973, Pink Floyd maintained a relentless gigging schedule and by the time they came to record "Dark Side Of The Moon" had already created many of the basic tracks. "Dark Side Of The Moon" would be the first Pink Floyd (post Syd Barrett) album where Roger Waters would supply all the lyrics around a concept: The Circle of Life. With the timeless qualities of its production and musicality, allied to the hypnotic evocation of its central themes - alienation, paranoia, madness, war and death, "Dark Side Of The Moon" would become the album that would dominate the 70's and 80's (with a record number of 741 consecutive weeks in the Billboard 200). This program takes an in depth look at the making of the 1973 album. All four members of the band Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright are featured in exclusive interviews. Roger, David and Richard play songs and demonstrate themes from the album. Alan Parsons (the original engineer) takes you through the multi track tapes giving a unique insight into the musical fabric of the record and the program is illustrated throughout with archive footage. "Dark Side Of The Moon" with its combination of great songs, inventive effects and one of the best known sleeves ever, tapped into the world's collective subconscious and became a landmark in Rock history and a truly Classic Album. Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" Classic Album is the creative story behind the masterpiece: "Dark Side Of ThThanks for all your help.e Moon". 5 out of 5 stars I dont get it?.......2007-07-09

Guys, Dark Side Tour started in 1972. I know, I have the London T-shirt and talked to a person who saw it live in San Francisco. How can you want DVD quality and criticise this movie for it's VHS feel when that is what makes it classic? Read the description and if not for you fine, just do not criticise that which you buy and do not read the album jacket for. To those who are mad it is not a concert video........This is why it is called the MAKING OF. Want a Floyd concert, get RODGER WATERs redoing the wall at Berlin. history. I am 49 and in the 70's and 80's you looked forward to KFOG having a band on for the informal interview. The best is when they all came on live. Heard one of Jerry's boys pull his Les Paul accoustic out of the safe just last week. You remind me for those who criticise the product for what it is intended to be is people who bought an album that was labeled ACCOUSTIC and complained there was no electric guitar in it. My nod of respect to those in the five star category. Check out the one star. Kind of sad. Dont bash unless you know what you are talking about. Thanks for the giggle though.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME EDITING.......2007-06-17

I gave this as a gift. We watched it then I took it back for MY collection. I'm no friend when it comes to Floyd. This DVD exposes some amazing tracks and never before seen (and heard) stuff that blew my mind. Alan Parsons sits at a mixing board and plays with the MASTER TAPES right before your eyes like it was nothing at all. Sheesh.

Again, this blew my mind. What a great DVD. A MUST for Floyd fans!

5 out of 5 stars Insightful glimpse into a brilliant album........2007-06-01

First I want to say that the Eagle Rock series Classic Albums is sheer quality. I have several of these DVDs and I have not been disappointed. I think this one is the best one so far (probably because Dark Side is my favorite album). Anyway, this DVD gives great insight into the writing, recording, and producing of Darkside. It has interviews with all the members of the band and Alan Parsons. There is a crap load of bonus material. If you love Dark Side and you are even remotely interested in what is involved in the creation of a brilliant album than this DVD is an absolute must. I have watched this one more than once simply because there is so much information to absorb and it is extremely interesting. Oh by the way avoid the hacky Wish You Were Here documentary, it is not part of the Classic Albums series and it is not from Eagle Rock.

5 out of 5 stars Best Historical Rock and Roll Documentary Ever Produced.......2007-05-12

I've never seen a historical rock documentary go into as much fascinating detail as this one does.

I was most impressed by the fact that the producers were able to get the original recording enginner, Alan Parsons, in the studio with the original master tapes and walk through the recordings track by track giving you a glimpse of the small pieces that make up the whole of this great recording.

If the other artists and albums in this "Classic Albums" series didn't suck so hard, I'd buy every single one of them. Unfortunately, out of the whole work of these documentaries, there are only 2 or 3 projects that interest me in the slightest. I do, however, plan on investing in other DVD's from this series that feature artists that I like.

For any Floyd fan, this is a must-own.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!!!!!!!1.......2007-05-12

As a big Pink Flody fan, this movie could have been a still cam on the recording of "On the Run" and I still would have given it 5 stars! HOwever, to anyone that is even slightly familiar with The Dark Side of the Moon, this is a must watch DVD!

Half its members may be dead and its leader may be keeping a low profile, but the Who remains enormously popular. Devotees who haven't availed themselves of Jeff Stein's thrilling, self-mocking 1979 documentary about the group shouldn't wait another minute now that the film has been painstakingly--perhaps heroically--restored to its theatrical-release length from original elements. The sound is clearer than on previous video releases, images are once more crisp and color-rich, and adjustments in tape speed make the Who sound like themselves again, particularly in vintage television performances and filmed club dates from as far back as the band's sonically thrilling, early R&B period. Special features are, shall we say, extensive: 100 or so minutes of multiple-angle footage, an insightful interview with Roger Daltrey, a featurette about the film's restoration, and a mesmerizing, isolated John Entwistle audio track. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars I can not add more detail, but go on record when a company does good.......2007-07-06

It seems that every piece of film from the late 60's, early to mid 70's is
being dug up and being dumped right to DVD. The worst of them not even
bothering to re-mix the 16 track masters to 5.1 and use the original PCM
Stereo 2.0 or worse Mono x 2.

This is not that. This is a full restoration/quality
enhancement/clean-up??, and all out re-engineer of the audio tracks and
the outcome is wonderful, superb. This is a must for every Who fan and
IMHO if it were twice the price at $35, it is easily worth every penny. It
is indeed a true special edition.

If companies released enhanced, remastered versions of classics for DVD
media I would gladly pay twice the price for every one of them over the
normal price of a DVD. Or if every effort is made, but there are still
limitations, that is O.K., I can live with it. But can't stand the lazy
media change only. Arghh.

Enjoy this one! What a treat!

5 out of 5 stars LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE.......2007-06-23

If you are a Who fan, you HAVE TO own this. The is a great rockumentary! Definitely one of my favorites, along with the Zeppelin one! I could watch this over and over. It shows their best performances and their personalities. Don't miss out on some classic Jimmy Moon!

5 out of 5 stars THE TRUE MASTERS OF MOTEL/HOTEL & INSTRUMENT MASS DESTRUCTION........2007-06-10

I will be writing a review on the legendary historic classic Rock n' Roll movie entitled "THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT" starring the true masters of disaster and one of England's pride and joys, T-H-E W-H-O! THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT" was originally released in theaters in 1979 by THE WHO group limited and in this DVD Special Edition in 2003 by Pioneer Entertainment (USA) Inc. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary historic movie or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the overall best informative and most accurate review possible.

THE WHO will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for composing and recording some of Rock's most all-time sacred anthems ever. THE WHO will also forever be remembered for being the true masters of disasters by being the kings of motel/hotel & instrument mass destruction. THE WHO at one time were always known for destroying their instruments at the end of their concert performances. If that wasn't enough, Keith Moon would invent and perfect the art of destroying motel/hotel rooms. Moon would also drive cars into swimming pools not just at the motels/hotels, but at his own home. Moon was also known for throwing furniture as well as television sets either off the top roof or out of his room balcony. This whole Rock n' Roll documentary movie is the story of the real genuine original band THE WHO from the 1960's and the 1970's. THIS IS THE WHO AT THEIR VERY BEST people. There are many stories that were left out of the movie and for a very good reason. There were many Moonie stories that were so crazy and dangerous, that they could not be told on film.

The original WHO members comprising of lead singer and frontman Roger Daltrey, lead and rhythm guitarist Pete Townshend, the late great bassist John Entwistle and the late great mad drummer Keith (Moon The Loon) Moon is what made THE WHO the crazy lunatic legends they would forever always be known and remembered for. In my opinion, Keith (Moon The Loon) moon was not just one of the all-time greatest drummers in Rock n' Roll history, but he was one of the craziest lunatics that ever walked the face of the earth, let alone Rock n' Roll history. I have read three books on Keith Moon alone and let me tell you, its really a wonder that Keith Moon lived as long as he did. Keith Moon should have died in his childhood years and not in his thirties. Keith Moon was the most REAL Rock n' Roll star as they came who really truly lived the Rock n' Roll lifestyle like it was a religion.

Moon was extremely charismatic and had an natural sense of humor. Moon was an extremely funny person. Moon actually loved making people laugh and make them happy. However, Moon had the legendary comedian's disease of being extremely funny on the outside, but extremely unhappy in the inside. And that, my fellow Rock n' Roller's, is what would kill him in the end along with the aid of certain prescribed medications he would overdose on to help him kick his alcohol and drug habits.

In my opinion, when you think about it, its really a wonder that Pete Townshend is still alive and lived to tell about it. Pete Townshend was another Keith Moon until the day Moon died. When Keith Moon died in 1978, the Keith Moon that was instilled in Townshend as well as part of Pete Townshend and alot of THE WHO, would die with him forever. THE WHO would never be the same again after Keith Moon died. PLEASE DON'T GET ME WRONG, I AM NOT KNOCKING THE WHO IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM.

"THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT" is THE WHO and all their glory years. This legendary historic film includes blistering live versions of "My Generation," "I Can't Explain," "Young Man (Blues)," "Baba O' Riley," "A Quick One," "Pinball Wizard," "See Me, Feel Me" and "Won't Get Fooled Again." THE WHO would also deliver fine video performances such as "Happy Jack," "Magic Bus" and "Tommy, Can You Hear Me." THE WHO would also record excellent studio outtakes on the legendary song "Who Are You" from 1978.

Following Keith (Moon The Loon) Moon's untimely death in 1978, THE WHO would carry on magnificently and forever keep Moonie's legend alive and intact. The Who would carry on with former FACES drummer Kenney Jones for a little while but Jones WAS NO KEITH MOON. As a result, Jones would soon leave the band. There would be other drummers afterwards that would follow but they could never replace Keith Moon. In my opinion, THE WHO found the PERFECT drummer and the ONLY drummer that is capable of coming close to filling in Keith Moon's shoes. His name, Zak Starkey, son of Richard Starkey A.K.A. one Ringo Starr.

Zak Starkey has come from the bloodline of perhaps, the most famous drummer that ever lived that played in the greatest band that music ever produced, THE BEATLES. It was also Zak who would always call Keith Moon "Uncle Keith." Rock legend has it that Uncle Keith not only purchased Zak's first drum kit, but Uncle Keith as well as Zak's father Ringo taught young Zak quite a bit about drumming. Zak Starkey brought back the youth and the power of THE WHO one more time. With this in mind, THE WHO was performing at a level not seen or heard since Keith Moon was alive and was doing great until John Entwistle died in 2002 on the eve of beginning their tour in Las Vegas, Nevada. When Entwistle died, alot of what remained in the original WHO would also die with him.

In closing, with Daltrey and Townshend that is left of the original WHO and Zak Starkey behind the drumming helms, THE WHO still has proven to persevere and carry on up to this very day. I, for one, wish them all well and hope that they can carry on forever. I would sure love to see it, wouldn't you? Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have truly enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also deeply hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. THE WHO LIVES! R.I.P. Keith (Moon The Loon) Moon (1946-1978) and John Entwistle (1944-2002). Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING........2007-04-11

Pretty much for anyone who ever loved, liked, or mildly enjoyed The Who. It's a rocumentary that just blows every other in its genre out of the water!

5 out of 5 stars A Must -Have!.......2007-03-25

This movie is a must-have if you love rock and roll! Bands like The Who, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Led Zepplin changed the way we listen to music forever. This gives such a rare inside look at the original members that it leaves you feeling like you were along for the ride. The Soundtract to this movie is a must have also! For you gen xer's, the song "Who Are You" wasn't always the theme song to a TV show! I highly reccomend this documentary. Long Live Rock!

Before Dreamgirls hit cineplexes in 2006, there was Sparkle. Released in 1976, the low-budget movie (which is also loosely based on the story of Diana Ross and the Supremes) achieved somewhat of a cult following among fans that enjoy a good cry along with their kitsch. Sparkle tells the rags-to-riches (and rags again, for some of the characters) tale of three sisters with gorgeous voices. There's Sister (Lonette McKee), Sparkle (Irene Cara, Fame), and Delores (Dwan Smith), who team up with a couple of players (including a very young Philip Michael Thomas, pre-Miami Vice) to form a singing group. Because the men add little oomph to the outfit, the quintet becomes an all-girl trio and is renamed the redundant (and hysterical) Sister and the Sisters. But because this movie is called Sparkle and not Sister, we know that Irene Cara's character is the one to watch. Cara is a joy to listen to when she unleashes her powerful pipes. And as the much put-upon Sister, McKee is convincing and earns the viewer's sympathy. Set in the 1950's, the movie tackles racism, sexism, jealousy, and both chemical and physical abuse. While it is overly dramatic and liberally serves up sloppy doses of soap opera clichés, the film also is highly watchable because of its over-the-top campiness. --Jae-Ha Kim

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-07-07

I have been waiting for this movie to come out on DVD. I'm so glad it finally did. I wish the bonus CD had the songs on it from the movie. Other then that I have to say I'm please. I hope everyone enjoys this great movie.

4 out of 5 stars Sparkle, a great 70's classic.......2007-07-03

Unlike Dream Girls you're able to start at the beginning of the sister's poor upbringing and see each detail of their life as they are struggling in a ghetto; then see them rise to the top and reach their dreams of becoming singing sensations. You know just where they came from and where they ended up.
I first saw the movie in the 70's and I loved it. Philip Michael Thomas was adorable. I still watch the movie from time to time.

1 out of 5 stars Sparkle? More like a dull finish........2007-07-02

Sorry folks, I know this is considered a 70s classic, but I couldn't get into this one.

The story has been described already, so here goes.

I saw it when I was 13 (circa 1978-79) and it put me to sleep in the theater. I finally saw the rest of it on DVD this weekend. I didn't miss much.

First of all, none of the characters are well-drawn enough to make you feel much sympathy for them. We don't get enough about them to understand why they do what they do. This is especially true of the Lonette McKee character "Sister," who looks pretty, but strikes you as being really shallow and stupid for making the choices that she did.

The singing leaves much to be desired. One finds it easy to understand why the record company had Aretha Franklin rerecord the songs for the soundtrack album. Aside from the girls looking cute and showing off some serious pulchritude in the tight dresses, the performances just aren't that compelling.

Overall, the tale is quite dreary and almost unrelentigly grim as a whole. Little or no humor (some really cornball stuff from Don "Bubba" Bexley as a low-rate MC) or moments to make you smile (other than some of the opening talent show-the guys who sing "Love potion #9 and the early love scene with Irene Cara & Philip Michael Thomas). This aside, the film is really unappealing except for those who saw it in the 70s and are nostaligic about it.

This film has often been considered as a predecessor to "Dreamgirls." Such comparisons are valid. In spite of the similar stories, DG succeeds with more zesty and appealing performances and characters, better songs, and a proper mix of drama, music, and comedy.

This thing, on the other hand, drags like lead with sappy songs ("Something He Can Feel" aside) and unrelenting tales of drug addiction, domestic violence, mafia hit men, ghetto poverty, etc. with no comic relief or well-done light moments to balance this. (for example, we never learn what happens to the bitter daughter who leaves home or what caused her to be as angry as she was or why her mother was such a saint under these conditions, etc).

No thanks folks. Give me DG any day and use this DVD as a coaster, frisbee, or for target practice. It IS interesting out of curiousity to see soon-to-be's such as a very young Phillip Michael Thomas and Irene Cara going through some early motions and Mary Alice before she was a staple in Black television shows of the 1980s.

5 out of 5 stars Talk about a 70's hidden gem!.......2007-06-21

These ladies were the real Dreamgirls before what we are seeing right now. This is a true classic musical drama about three girls and a guy trying to make it out of the ghetto into something special. This was Irene Cara and Phillip Michael Thomas at their best. I recommend that every fan of the 70's music and film should own this one.

5 out of 5 stars TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE!!!! THE WAIT IS OVER.......2007-06-15

I was afraid a few months ago when I was hunting for this and heard it was only overseas. The shipping was really expensive and it was in a strange format. But, this is the greatest story of music, pain and triumph made. Nothing like it has been made to date. I have been looking for this forever! It's taken my entire lifetime to put two great movies (this and Mahogany) on DVD that our children can learn to love as well. Way to go!!!

Perhaps best known for its faux Springsteen soundtrack, the 1983 Eddie and the Cruisers is a rock lover's fantasy run wild. The story finds a reporter (Ellen Barkin) tracking down rumors of an unreleased album by a band whose charismatic leader (Michael Paré) allegedly died years before. As she approaches surviving members--who have since gone on to other things--she gets different points of view on Eddie's life and artistic drive, and the mystery about that album deepens. The trouble with the film is simple: it's impossible to accept. Michael Paré is far from suitable to play a Jersey shore rocker with thematic pretensions toward Rimbaud that go back to the '60s, and the soundtrack by John Cafferty sounds like a hack's rendition of E Street Band magic. An all-around embarrassment. --Tom Keogh

Description

They say rock 'n' roll never dies, but one dark night in 1963, Eddie Wilson's car took a dive off aJersey bridge with the troubled rock idol at the wheel. His body was never found. Tom Berenger (Platoon), Michael ParÃ(c) (Streets of Fire) and Ellen Barkin (Sea of Love) star in this cool, compelling classic that really rocks! Twenty years after the lead singer (ParÃ(c)) of"Eddie and the Cruisers" disappeared, the band's songs are hotter than ever. And renewed interest in the band leads TV reporter Maggie Foley (Barkin) to pursue a tantalizing mystery: What if Eddie isstill alive? The circumstances surrounding his death are just shadowy enough to make it a distinct possibility, and someone (could it be Eddie?) has been ransacking the homes of surviving band members in a desperate search for tapes of the group's visionary, never-released album. As Maggie interviews the former "Cruisers," the pieces of the puzzle start to fit...but only until still deeper mysteries begin to surface.
