Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Almost Total Rip-Off.......2006-09-17

First of all, the title is misleading. It contains only one Woody Woodpecker cartoon. Second, the back of the box is outright fraudulent. It says "Woody Woodpecker is featured in 'The Land of the Lost', 'Teacher's Pest', 'Gabby Swing Cleaning', and 'Pantry Panic'...". Woody is only in the last of those mentioned. The other three feature other characters.

My biggest complaint, though, is the very poor video quality. I understand these are old and not all of them are in the best of condition; that's not my objection. The problem is that this DVD looks like it's a VHS transfer. It looks like this company used to offer this on tape, and they digitized it by playing the VHS product on a player plugged into a video capture board. I doubt they even went back to their original master. The result is a very blurry picture that is almost unwatchable.

The only saving grace is that two of the cartoons on here ("Cheese Burglar" and "Stupidstitious Cat") I've never seen before. Since they are public domain, I'm sure they are available on other collections at better quality. As soon as I can find a collection with those cartoons, I'm throwing this disc away.

BTW, the publisher couldn't even be bothered to get the run time correct. The box says 62 minutes. The actual run time is 91 minutes.

These are the cartoons on the disc:
1) Pantry Panic (Woody Woodpecker)
2) Teacher's Pest (Junior)
3) The Land of the Lost (Red Lantern)
4) Swing Cleaning (Gabby)
5) A Haul in One (Popeye)
6) Insect to Injury (Popeye)
7) Nearlyweds (Popeye)
8) Popeye the Sailor Meets Sinbad the Sailor
9) Bold King Cole (Felix)
10) Goose that Laid the Golden Egg (Felix)
11) Cheese Burglar (Herman)
12) Stupidstitious Cat (Buzzy)

I bought this dvd at Walgreen's drug store for $1.00! And yes there's only one Woody cartoon....

1 out of 5 stars Terrible!.......2005-05-27

This dvd is a scam! Woody Woodpecker is in only one of the cartoons on the dvd! I will either get a refund and return the dvd, at the sellers expense, or I will stop payment with my credit card company. Do not order this dvd if you are looking for Woody Woodpecker cartoons.

5 out of 5 stars It's Worth Every Penny!!!.......2005-01-29

This is the BEST Woody Woodpecker DVD I've ever seen!!! Even the artwork on the cover is great!!! I bought 2 of them/1 for a friend.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Marvelous Mix of Classic Animation.......2005-07-08

The episodes in this collection segue with no titles or credits given, which is rather disconcerting, but the DVD makes up for it in the brilliance of some of the cartoons. There are episodes that show the art of animation at its most imaginative and finely drawn, and if you appreciate early cartooning, it's a worthy collection to get. Total running time is 60 minutes, and the prints are in fine condition considering their age.

Episode list:
1: "Bold King Cole" (1936). Directed by Burt Gillett for the Van Beuren Studios, with music by Winston Sharples.
An extremely odd and brilliantly drawn cartoon featuring Felix the Cat and Old King Cole. Felix is first seen in a tree singing with the birds, when the mood changes and in a big storm, he is struck by lightening, He finds refuge in the castle of Old King Cole, who to cover his fear of the night, starts to brag. The ghosts of the king's ancestors place old Cole in a diabolical wind machine, and is finally saved by Felix, who has new powers thanks to the lightening bolt.
2: "Fright to the Finish" (1954). Directed by Seymour Kneitel, animated by Al Eugster and William Pattengill for Famous Studios, with music by Winston Sharples.
It's Halloween, and Olive Oyl is reading ghost stories, when Popeye and Bluto decide to try to scare each other to see who wins Olive's affections.

3: "Ants in the Plants" (1940). Directed by Dave Fleischer, animated by Myron Waldman and George Moreno, for the Fleischer Stusios, with music by Sammy Timberg.
Exquisite artwork highlights this cartoon about warfare between a big anteater and an ant colony, and it also includes some nifty music, as the ants sing "he's a menace, he's a brute, he will scoop you with his snoot."
4: "King for a Day" (1940). Directed by Dave Fleischer, animated by Willard Bowsky and James Davis for the Fleischer Studios, music by Sammy Timberg.
Features Gaby in his first cartoon, having previously been the town crier in "Gulliver's Travels" (1939), and King Little.
Gaby delivers a letter to King Little, with some unexpected and dire results. As animation, this one is the least interesting of the collection.

5: "Small Fry" (1939). Directed by Dave Fleischer, animated by Willard Bowsky and Orestes Calpini for the Fleischer Studios, music by Sammy Timberg.
Features Tommy Cod in this deep-sea tale of a little fish trying to mix with the big boys. It has some magnificent animation in glowing colors, and the Hoagy Carmichael song "Small Fry."
6: "I Don't Scare" (1956). Directed by Isadore Sparber, animated by Tom Johnson and Frank Enders for Famous Studios, with music by Winston Sharples.
Popeye and Bluto vie for Olive Oyl's attention using Friday the 13th and other superstitions on each other. This one is starkly and very effectively drawn, with bright, flat colors.
7: "Popeye the Sailor meets Ali Baba's Forty Thieves" (1937). Directed by Dave Fleischer, animated by Willard Bowsky, George Germanetti, and Orestes Calpini for Fleischer Studios, with music by Sammy Timberg.
This classic two-reeler (17.25 minutes in length) was once thought to be ruined, but has been restored, and this is the best print I've seen of it, with crisp, bright colors. It is a terrific tale of Popeye, Olive Oyl and J. Wellington Wimpy getting stranded in the desert, finding their way to a town, and then meeting up with Abu Hassan (an Arabic version of Bluto) who captures Olive, and the chase/rescue follow. This has the voices of Jack Mercer as Popeye, and Mae Questal, who was also the main voice for Betty Boop, as Olive Oyl,

1 out of 5 stars Suckered in with brand name.......2007-04-10

I was the person they were thinking of when they slapped together these dollar store quality(or below, some of those are good!)videos and used a name brand like Bazooka, and great packaging to sell garbage.Being a recent convert to the golden age of cartoons, i have been slowly building my dvd library with quality titles, or what i think to be at time of ordering. What i can recommend are the Image Entertainment line of classic animation, beautiful stuff, this dvd is soft focus, watered down colors, disgusting. To end on a positive note, i will say the packaging was done extremely well, with a color dvd to match the red packaging, a pack of cards with a stick of gum, so in that respect someone took some time and care into the dvd process, just not in content.

5 out of 5 stars Felix the Superstar.......2005-09-06

Felix the Cat is by far my favorite cartoon character; he was created by Pat Sullivan and Otto Messmer and named "Master Tom" in 1919 for "Feline Follies," and in 1924 he was re-named Felix, and became the first animated superstar. I love the surrealism of the early silent b&w animation for the Sullivan Studios, and when the Van Beuren Studios took Felix over in 1936, the storytelling and art of Felix changed, but didn't diminish. We get 1 example of the former, and 2 of the latter in this DVD collection, and they are wonderful. Another big favorite of mine is "The Sunshine Makers," an oddball cartoon also from the Van Beuren Studios. Total running time is 65 minutes.

Episode list:
1: "Felix the Cat and the Goose" (1936), directed by Burt Gillett and Tom Palmer, music by Winston Sharples for the Van Beuren Studios. Felix and Goldie the Goose are very philanthropic with their golden eggs, until Goldie is goosenapped by Captain Kidd. Felix to the rescue!
2: "April Maze" (1930), directed by Pat Sullivan for the Sullivan Studios. Felix takes Inky and Dinky for a picnic, but they are hounded by storms. Includes a dancing bear and a snake charming rabbit that try to steal the picnic basket.
3: "Neptune Nonsense" (1936), directed by Burt Gillett and Tom Parker for the Van Beuren Studios. Great underwater animation as Felix tries to search for a mate for his pet goldfish Annabelle.

4: "Chicken a la King" (1936), directed by Dave Fleischer, animated by Dave Tendlar and Nicolar Tafuri, music by Sammy Timberg and Bob Rothberg for the Fleischer Studios. A hilarious chicken harem, with the Arabian rooster falling for Duckie Wuckie, a scintillating duck modeled after Mae West. Lots of singing and dancing in this one.
5: "Cobweb Hotel" (1936), directed by Dave Fleischer, animated by Dave Tendlar and William Sturm, music by Sammy Timber and Bob Rothberg for the Fleischer Studios. Flies get trapped in Mr. Spider's Hotel, but Mr. and Mrs. Fly check in for their honeymoon, and fight back!
6: "The Fresh Vegetable Mystery" (1939), directed by Dave Fleischer, animated by Dave Tendlar and William Sturm for the Fleischer Studios. Veggies come to life in this imaginative cartoon. Color is quite washed out in this episode.

7: "Greedy Humpty Dumpty" (1936), directed by Dave Fleischer, animated by Dave Tendlar and William Sturm for the Fleischer Studios. Humpty Dumpty's greed is his doom when he desires the gold in the sun. Lots of song and dance in this episode.
8: "Farm Foolery" (1949), directed by Seymour Kneitel, animated by Al Eugster and Bill Hudson, music by Winston Sharples for the Famous Studios. A farm animal sing-along as they sing "Shine on Harvest Moon" and provide lots of sight gags.
9: "The Sunshine Makers" (1935), directed by Ted Eshbaugh for the Van Beuren Studios. Happy gnomes are happy because they have discovered how to bottle sunshine. They pelt a neighboring town of gloomy gnomes with the bottles, and then everyone is happy. Fantastic animation in this gem, and though the color does not have the vibrancy it should, and I have seen better transfers, it is still terrific.
10: "Picnic Panic" (1935), directed by Burt Gillett and Tom Palmer for the Van Beuren Studios. Molly Moo Cow made her screen debut in this episode that is part live action, featuring some children, and kettles, teapots and cups.
