Bear introduces youngsters to the world of work in this trio of episodes from the popular series Bear in the Big Blue House. Suave and soothing, our gentle host explains that work is important and can be enjoyable when friends tackle a job together. In the first segment, Tutter learns that work has many definitions, whether it's tidying toys, picking berries, or working on a railroad. Lively sing-alongs accompany the second story, including a jazzy, bubblicious tune, "Clean Up the House," as Bear helps his friends scrub their rooms, and themselves, with brushes and buckets. Later, in "We Did It Our Way," Bear teaches the otters a lesson in teamwork as a way of problem solving, before singing a blues rendition of "Cooperation." Expect repeat showings of this Jim Henson gem that will inspire kids toward wiggly fun, hopefully with a broom in hand. Ages 3 to 5. --Lynn Gibson

This is wonderful, training toddlers to clean up after themselves is a great plan. Some is a real genius. This has wonderful music as bear usually does and is alot of fun. Bear does it again teaching children to clean up while entertaining at the same time. This is a good way to keep you child busy while they learn. Bear teaches values and helpful information such as seasons, shapes, colors, potty training, brushing teeth, bathing, sharing, friendship, and alot more.

5 out of 5 stars Working Like a Bear.......2006-03-14

"Tidy Time with Bear" is another three-episode DVD of excellent episodes from "Bear in the Big Blue House." Although all of them touch on themes of cleaning, only "Woodland House Wonderful" really sticks very closely to that theme. Despite this, this is still a wonderful set. The three episodes are:

"Working Like a Bear"

This episode is all about work of various sorts. Bear goes to work berry-picking and sees how his friends in the Big Blue House are working. Sometimes, just playing and learning can be working --- "Workin' Like a Kid!" This episode includes the song "Everybody in the Tub," which no doubt helped to land it on this DVD.

"Woodland House Wonderful"

This is the episode that most easily fits the theme. Everybody helps to clean up when the Big Blue House is chosen as a feature home for the magazine "Woodland House Wonderful." This episode includes the songs "Clean up the House," "Everybody in the Tub" and "Brush Brush Bree."

"We Did it Our Way"

Finally, in this episode, Bear is at it again --- helping his friends to work together and have fun. He helps Pip and Pop to retrieve a jar lid, helps out with games and even gets some help himself with some cooking for Doc Hogg.

This DVD has sing-alongs for the songs "Everybody in the Tub," Brush Brush Bree," "Clean Up the House" and "Get it Together." The words appear in big, easy-to-follow lettering and while occasionally the lyrics are bit inaccurate on these sing-alongs, it's overall very-well-done.

I can't speak to the improvements made to the newer of the DVD, as I watched older one. However, they sound great. Overall, I don't have anything bad to say about this release. It doesn't have any high-powered special features, but the show is so good that it doesn't really need to have any. Yet another neat release from the series.

5 out of 5 stars BUY THIS NOW!!!.......2003-11-25

This purchase was the BEST ONE ever made. I bought this for my daughter when she was just a few months old and we've worn it out. She's now 2 and sings the songs perfectly. My husband and I also sing with her. She helps me clean up the house and in the bathtub she sings the bath songs. Bear and the gang also sing the cutest brush your teeth song and my daughter will brush her teeth on her own whenever I sing it to her. All of Bear's dvd's are great , we absolutely adore him. Bonus: Continuous play mode. Bless the individuals who came up with that. Just a quick note: Potty time, Shapes & Colors and Everybody's Special are so entertaining for adults (you are singing those songs like it or not) and educational for the little ones. Worth every penny

4 out of 5 stars Squeaky Clean, but Deep in Meaning.......2003-08-19

There are a lot of improvements made to the format of this DVD. You can set the language, you can choose a specific episode, and you can let the episodes run over and over again if you want to.

There are three episodes, with repetition of the two main songs, but there's a lot of information packed into them. Bear teaches about different types of work, even "otter work", and there are references to gender issues. Bear, Ojo and Treelo discuss whether girls can be firefighters, and in "Working Like a Bear", Bear sings about Moms mowing lawns and Dads changing diapers.

The second episode deals with both house cleaning and personal hygiene, such as bathing and brushing your teeth, with some catchy songs.

The last one is much the same, but there's a new character "Doc Hog" invited over for apple pie, with whipped cream, and everybody has to "co-operate" to get the job done.

Interesting stuff!

I don't know if it is intentional for Treelo (the lemur) to be unintelligible, but we can't make head or tail of his gibberish without subtitles.

My son doesn't mind the "shadow" stories, but personally I don't like the format. The black paper cut outs are just too roughly done, and I'm not sure if they are trying to teach or amuse. I thought the singing cattle skull was creepy, but I liked that Dinah was a dinosaur - or was she a rhino? (Someone's In the Kitchen with Dinah) I think these skits should be cleaned up a little.

Overall - two very entertaining episodes, and one that's just average.

5 out of 5 stars My kid loves this stuff.......2003-08-19

My daughter is almost 3 and LOVES Bear in the Big Blue House. This DVD is more substantial than a lot of other children's DVD's out there... it's got this Montessori-ish way of teaching kids, i.e. not focusing so much on ABC's and stuff, but preparing children for life. It also is longer than most DVD's, and of higher quality as well. The singing is very good (especially Shadow) and the atmosphere of the DVD is relaxing and soothing on the whole. I am glad I gave it a try for my daughter, and couldn't be more pleased with how much she loves it and the quality of the content.

5 out of 5 stars Good shows, good music, good fun!.......2003-08-06

Three fun stories in the classic Bear format with all your favorite characters and songs. This is not the screwy new version of the newer Bear shows on Disney, which do not center so much on the house itself. Disney seems to be a company that can't resist messing up a successful show or movie format (like all the lame followups to the original Pooh movie, among many other examples.) Again, this disk is from 1997 and it has the original Big Blue House format, with the Goodbye Song ending each episode, etc.

Anyway these three stories all relate to cleaning or other chores, one way or another, but are much more fun than that topic would suggest. Also, they are different enough to provide varied entertainment and the DVD navigation allows separate viewing of each episode so you can pace yourself.

We had the disk for a while before realizing that we could listen to the songs separately. When we did, our child insisted on repeating them over and over, singing and dancing along and pretty much memorizing them. That was a plus, and the songs are well-done so we didn't mind listening, too. Navigating between individual songs is not as easy as one would expect, but that's not a big deal. The song section was a smart feature for them to add to the DVD.

Definitely one of the better additions we've made to our collection, and recommended for any fans of the Big Blue House.
