Description
At the foot of the mysterious Moon Mountain lives a white lion named Leo, ruler of the jungle. He and his family live peacefully among the other animals in a lush habitat with which they have been blessed. Humans have entered Leo's domain, shattering the peace in the relentless search for moonlight stones, a source of exquisite wealth. Overwhelmed by greed, they have little regard for the living creatures of the jungle. The animals, disturbed by the occupation of their rightful home, must resist the intruders.

Sad, Disjointed, Beautifully Animated and it ain't for the kids.......2007-05-22
That PG-13 (not for children 13 and under) rating on the back isn't kidding! I haven't seen a children's anime this shocking since "Ringing Bell of Chirin", though that was a masterpiece, and this was the director trying to build the same type of shock value to the ending and falling short of teaching us a similarly valuable lesson. Don't believe the back of the box, either. This film branches off more than my family tree.
Both animals and humans alike are shot, a main character is stabbed and killed via suicide attack, a human dies from consuming a radioactive stone (eyes roll into back of head & head goes plop onto ground), and main characters grow ill and die, one painfully and dramatically. There is even a bit of swearing on part of the humans, and Leo yells angrily up at the sky scorning some unseen all-seeing supreme being for the woes that have befallen his jungle. The animation, though the DVD quality is glitchy at times, is beautiful however, but parents and fans of the original series will wonder if it was worth the dramatic changes. Deaths do not make a great film, and I think that formula could have been cut back for this. My thanks to the friend who gave me the opportunity to add this bizarre yet pretty film to my mature-children's anime to my collection.
*SPOILER WARNING*
The first scene is beautiful and serene with the birth of Leo And Lira's cubs which seems to last for a good ten minutes without voice actors, just visual feasting.
Cut to a seemingly out-of-place city scene with all the hustle and bustle of such a place, a completely human-inhabited world far from the last scene that left me feeling more than confused from the very sudden transition. The humans exchange words for a bit over a little red stone Ham-Egg has on his person (couldn't the creator have at least changed the silly names for this very serious adaptation of the series?)that he found in a stream near the Bajalou jungle, and it's decided that this jungle-roaming peddler will show a scientist named Dr. Lemonade (see what I mean?) where it's found. Getting to Africa's savannah, they run into a Dr. Moustache (really, the naming's pretty silly) who is hell-bent on protecting the jungle from potential poaching and intrusion. Ham-Egg couldn't care less and goes around shooting things through the rest of the film for kicks.
Somewhere in all this, Leo's son Lune (some spell it Rune) discovers a human's crashed airplane in the jungle and finds a music box that has him daydreaming about the human world (in a VERY cracked up and stylized five minute time-killer reminiscent of the Katie the Kitty Witch moment from Unico, for those who know of that film by the same guy), and while a storm rampages through the jungle, it seems more like he stows away rather than gets accidentally pulled out to see. There is no indication to the contrary. He gets picked up by a passing ship, sold to a circus, and starts living the big life while barely avoiding being whipped by the ringleader when Lune attacks him for whipping at an old tired elephant. This confuses him but educates him on the many kinds of humans and has him rethink his theory of being able to befriend all humans. This seems more a time-filler and deviates completely away from the main story. Everything else ties in a little, though there is a LOT going on in this movie. Actually, if you've seen the later episodes in the series where Kimba/Leo is grown up with the two cubs, this all occurs in different episodes.
Meanwhile, a horrible plague now sweeps through the jungle. It takes Lune and Lugio's mother, among many other animals. The Jamaican-talking monkey states "It's the plague, last time we nearly nost half the population, and there's no way to stop it." Leo is crestfallen, and Lira, get ready for this, dies horribly and painfully while telling her devastated mate and daughter how much she loves them and how they've made her life complete. Not a cartooney moment at all, and you'll be moved to tears from the performance. Leo's face is hidden as he sits silently to the side and listens to his daughter's cries. Note that in the original series, Lira lives... The next scene of them is of Lugio and Leo at Lira's gravestone with Lugio happily placing her mother's favorite flower's upon the grave. Leo prays to her that he'll watch over and raise their children well in her stead (unless he dies, that is). Then Lugio falls unconscious and has the "purple jelly disease" as well.
Dr. Moustache is later seen curing an animal because he knows of the disease, and going out into the forest, he encounters Leo. Because Leo recognizes him from a scene where he saved Lune from beneath a fallen tree during human roadwork, he trusts Moustache and brings his daughter to him to be cured. Apparently the animals can understand what the humans say, but not the other way around in this version, which makes a bit of Fantasy Sense: Humans can't understand animals because they don't wish to listen.
Lugio is cured, and apparently Moustache has enough of the cure in his little medicine box for every different animal in the forest. Hey, it's a cartoon, so we'll suspend the disbelief. He even saves a little bratty elephant boy when Leo convinces its father to let Moustache give it the cure. At first his father has to be talked into saving his son's life. "I will NEVER accept help from a human!" then "He's my only son, I hope you're right." This has the elephant, Panja, trust Leo's judgement later after an earlier conflict between them unrelated to the storyline, and Panja says he is proud to have Leo as his king (until someone successes him in a few days). Lune learns that the plague is in the forest at this point, and he escapes with help from a human girl from the circus and heads for home. He does not yet know of his mother's death.
Leo knows that Dr. Moustache and the scientist, Lemonade, are headed to the mountain called Mt. Moon to try to head off the expedition lead by Ham-Egg. If Hammy-boy gets the stones first, he'll use them for power, and if Lemonade gets them, he'll try to use them for the good of all mankind. Finding Lemon' and 'Stache partway to the mountain range, Leo motions that he's leading them in the right direction now that they're hopelessly lost, and they follow him the rest of the way. Ham-egg loses plenty of his men on his end, one falling off a cliff, another sinking to his fate in some quicksand. He shrugs and leads on, his men growing a bit anxious at his cold reaction, but they follow him to their deaths. He soon sees the two doctors far ahead of him and realizes that a white lion is leading them in the right direction using a quicker path, so he sneaks along.
The weather turns snowy when the travelers finally find Mt. Moon and begin scaling it. A woolly mammoth named Earth Mother leads Leo and his two human companions further up the mountain in the right direction, and they're attacked by dire wolves out of nowhere. For dramatic affect, I guess, they are the only animals in the movie not loyal or even communicative towards Leo. They attack Leo and Ham-Egg's group alike, and in the fray, Ham-Egg is attacked by a wolf and fires his gun, killing it and setting off an avalanche (odd for a relentless adventurer who knows what roots to live off of, but maybe he's never been on snowy terrain, but whatever, suspended disbelief). Leo and his two humans hide beneath Earth Mother, whose girth shields them, but Ham-Egg's men are all blasted off the side of the mountain. At this point Earth mother climbs out of the snow with the others and bids them farewell on their journey to the peak.
At the peak finally, the stones are nowhere to be found, but under moonlight they're discovered in a cave. A very happy moment for the humans is had when they thank the white lion for having saved humanity from an impending energy crisis, and they've beaten everyone to the stones. Just then Lemonade is shot in the back by Ham-Egg, who looks crazy with greed and approaches with his gun. Leo is enraged and more than attacks Hammy, biting down on his skull, and we see Ham-Egg all bloodied with an insane smile on his face. Whether it's from the wounds, the weather, the journey, whatever, Ham-Egg thinks it's a brilliant idea to eat these incredibly powerful, possibly radioactive stones. His eyes bolt into the back of his head, and he collapses, obviously dead to the viewers (no kids, I hope).
Lemonade lies gasping for air and insists that Moustache must carry his findings back to the civilized world then dies. The next scene is the mind-blower. Moustache struggles to get back down the mountain, but the rations only made for a one-way trip. He then realizes that Leo has been leading him on snow-blinded and can't travel any further. Heartbroken that his guide could die on account of him, he urges him to leave him there and hurry on ahead, cursing the stones and saying they've brought nothing but trouble to those that've sought them. Does Moustache not intend to tell the other humans that he found the stones, thereby saving the jungle from being destroyed by humans coming to mine the mountain? This is never covered in the movie.
At this point Leo shuffles a knife out of Moustache's pocket, and Moustache, confused, picks it up. Leo roars, and in slow motion, we see him stabbed as he pounces a quick-acting Moustache. Moustache begs "why?" Obviously, he can't hear Leo's voice about his dying wish, but we can. "You must consume my flesh and clothe yourself in my fur to survive and tell the humans what you've learned." I'll never forget it, and any children who watch this won't either. Let me restate that this is not a children's movie. The next few moments are a wordless and sad montage showing his mate and cubs all happy and alive. Note that in the series, Kimba/Leo never dies. This movie killed our lion...
The next scene is of Moustache waking up on a river raft. He's draped in Leo's fur and still looks quite fat/alive. He grips the fur and looks sadly up at the sky as his raft crosses paths with Lune on a floating log. Lune greets the man who saved his life in an earlier scene and jumps over to greet him. Pattering around on the bed of white fur, he stares up curiously at Moustache, who says he's going to tell him about his father's sacrifice and how he saved the world. If the stones are discovered, he saved the human world and destroyed his own home from human plundering when they come there to mine. If the stones's location are hidden, he saved the jungle world by keeping greedy humans out of the remote and untouched place. Either way, Lune, it seems, still doesn't realize he's an orphan because of the human expedition up the mountain, and we don't see him reunited with his sister, his last remaining relative.
The ending made me feel like closure was missing, and I really was expecting to see Lune reunited with Lugio at least. Hopefully he won't feel guilty about going off to adventure while his home was ravaged by all sorts of hell, and he'll realize he's sitting on what's left of his daddy. ;_;
One of the best animes ever!!.......2007-03-24
I first saw this at Christmas, because I got it as a Christmas present. I watched it and I was amazed, it's the greatest anime ever made yet. Unico is still a close second, another great anime, also by the same person, Osamu Tezuka - he's an amazing person!
I think the voices fitted the characters perfectly, and the animation and pictures were beautiful. There are some cels sold sometimes on ebay from this movie, and elsewhere. It's not a very recent anime, about 1997 but all the same, go check it out.
I've also seen the Kimba the white lion series (the 1966 one) every single episode and it's been really good. I have a lot of favourite characters! There were some funny parts like when Lune and Lukio discover the music box, when Tomy gets this stuff put on his tail to stop it from burning:
"YEAAAAAAAAAAAOWWWWWWWWWWW!!!" he screams then he jumps around the place shouting, "OW!! OW! OW! IT BURNS!" in a really funny tone.
They all scream and hide from the music box because it makes the chimey sound.
The movie is a little sad too, and it lives up to Osamu Tezuka's manga too (although I've never read it, I've seen some pictures from it on the internet, but that's it.)
Well, here's my little review, all in all, it's a perfect anime movie. It's really good and you won't regret it if you buy it.
This Movie is so cool!.......2006-08-09
This movie is sad but cute at the same time. What I like about this movie is that it's an anime film but is in english. Little kids 5 and under should really not watch it though.
SAD, NOT FOR YOUNG ONES.......2006-02-15
This movie is sad. Almost everyone dies, INCLUDING LEO. I am 9 and still had tears dropping. I would reomend this movie for kids 12+. Why?
In the bigging it was so sweet. Leo had 2 cubs and there was a huge celerbration. Then the mother and almost everyone starts a huge plaqe. The mother dies. Lokio gets sick. But then a nice man comes along and has a treatment. He tried it on Lokio and she gets better! The plaqe is stopped. Then some mean men come and distroy part of the jungle, looking for a special rock. The nice men try to stop them. Since Leo knew where it was to be found he led the nice men to the spot. But those mean men where sneaky and followed. Then when they reached the spot many die. First everyone one on the bad crew dies but the mean leader by an avalanch. The mean leader shot one of the nice men. Then some of the rock slipped and the mean man ate it. He choked and died. Then a storm started and Leo sacrificed his life for the remaining nice man-the one who stopped the plaqe. Leo's last words were, "You must eat my fleash and use my coat for warmth". Then Leo dies. Luna, the other cub becomes king of the jungle.
Sad and Good.......2006-01-20
This is a sad story. Leo dies! Leo is a lion which teaches The other animals how to get along. He dies by caring about a nice Human. It has a lot of deaths. His mate dies by sickness.Later his cild Lokio got it. She survied. His son Became boss after got the news was told to him that his dad died. He saw leo in the clouds. No quality control........2005-11-03
These DVDs could not possibly have been checked for quality before being released. The sound on each and every episode is unbelievably, horribly distorted. Yes, you can make out the words, but you'll think someone kicked in the speaker in your TV set.
In addition, each episode is shortened by having as much as 5 minutes cut out of it--there is no reason for this in a DVD release.
I don't know why they couldn't have produced a decent product. This classic series certainly deserves it.

Pinocchio.......2006-06-30
this is a great movie for first graders. It is not as long as a regular movie. The students really liked it.
Not a lick of charm.......2005-12-26
Since the Disney version is not currently for sale, many customers may be tempted to buy this ripoff as a second choice. If you're in that camp, please don't bother. Either wait for the Disney re-release or buy the Disney version used.
It's no surprise that the production values are very poor. That's par for the course with this type of low budget production. Given my daughter's extreme enthusiasm at finally receiving Pinocchio (as a gift) we decided to give it a go. The adults in the room found it painful to watch given the poor characterization, the plot that jumps around so much as to be completely incoherent and the overall cynical low-budget approach to the material. My 4-year-old found the entire plot and the world the video presents to be scary and depressing. She was actually crying at the end of it, even despite the supposedly happy ending. She insisted on watching through to the end in hopes that some ray of light would appear to lift her spirits -- no such luck! The good characters are completely unconvincing. I hate to say this about any movie, but it just felt evil through and through. This version lacks the charm of the Jiminy Cricket character, and their version of Pinocchio has no personal warmth or other redeeming characteristics to draw you in. His relationship with Gepetto seems artificial and forced. There are no warm or positive elements to counteract the pervasive evil of the world Pinocchio falls into. And, of course, none of the charming musical numbers that kids love so much.
Overall, just a horrendous experience for young and old. Avoid this one if you can.
Obviously, the previous reviewer reviewed the wrong film..........2003-08-08
Because if he or she had really written a review for GoodTimes' Pinocchio, he or she wouldn't have said that this film is evil or depressing because it simply isn't anything like that. This version of Pinocchio is one of the most touching animated adventures to come out of the studio. There's a lot of emotion and heart and when I was a little boy, this film used to make me cry. The last few moments are absolutely moving.
The story begins when a spark of magic scapes from the home of the Blue Fairy and lands on Gepetto the toymaker's fireplace. The spark of magic blends into one of the logs in the fire, it is this very log that Gepetto then turns into a toy all for his own. He creates a little puppet which immediatly comes alive, for it had been blessed with the Blue Fairy's magic. Gepetto sends his boy to school, but being a puppet just learning about the world, he decides to instead follow temptation and turn to see a puppet play instead. Pinocchio lives through a number of adventures like this, being trusty of unkind strangers and lying to get out of trouble, but when he becomes the scare that threatens the very Blue Fairy's life, he promises to be a good boy and is given his heart's greatest desire.
I am so sick of people comparing GoodTimes films with Disney films and even more sick of adults expecting to be pleased with a film that is meant for smaller children. Many of my friends have seen this wonderful animated tale when they were *children* and they all love it. Adults have a harder time appreciating simple beauty and are too judgemental, these films should be reviewed by children, not grown-ups. This was the review of an open-minded teen-ager.

Wow!.......2006-09-21
This is by FAR the best animated TV series I have ever seen. The lion king is an exact copy of it and it doesn't even come close. Leo is a great show, (providing you don't mind terrible voice acting) and I reccomend it to animal fantasy fans.

Inspect Volume 1 immediately if you decide to buy it anyway--the first production run included a wrong disc as one of the two discs in the set.
I don't know why they couldn't have produced a decent product. This classic series certainly deserves it.

On DVD at last!!!.......2007-04-03
This version is shown virtually every Christmas and/or easter in the UK and finally I have it on DVD (albeit Region 1)
Love it when i first saw it and still love to watch it all these years later!
The worst addaption of the LWW in the world.......2006-08-14
This movie is horribble! I loathed it. This movie is a horrible addaption of the book and I think it is way, way, way too cartoony. I absoulutly loathed, hated, and despised this movie. And if I could I wouldn't even give it 1 star. I'd probally give it 1/1,000,000,000,000,000 of a star...
Emmy-winning adaptation of a childhood favorite.......2006-05-20
Winning a 1979 Emmy award for "Outstanding Animated Program" (executive producer David D. Connell and producer Steven Cuitlahuac Melendez) and being nominated for a second in Outstanding Individual Achievement - Animation Program" (writers Bill Melendez and Connell), this animated version of the C.S. Lewis book holds a special place in my heart - it was the adaptation that introduced me to Narnia.
Directed by Bill Melendez (the man who gave us the Charlie Brown and Peanuts movies) this cartoon is beautiful in its simplicity. Of course to am eight-year old the Christian imagery was not apparent, but what I do remember through the clouds of nostalgia is being entranced by the magic and the adventure. Made for television it was one of those movies tha tbecame a perennial favorite for British television during the movie-heavy Christmas period and was one that I eagerly awaited (this was after all the days before the mass ownership of VCR's.) So, it was with a mixture of excitement and nervous anticipation that I picked up my copy - and I was not disappointed.
Of course for big-screen spectacle nothing can really match the 2005 Disney blockbuster of the same name (which has become Disney's most successful live-action movie ever with grosses over $740 million and has a second movie PRINCE CASPIAN prepping for a summer 2008 release,) but for simple storytelling and involving characters this animated movie is successful in what it sets out to do.
Featuring clever narration by the leads, dead-on expression by the characters and lines taken from the Lewis book this movie succeeds in making a faithful, good adaptation in 95 minutes.
This version also features two of the most recognizable voices from British television of this era in Leslie Phillips as Mr. Timnus and Leo McKern as the professor, amongst a cast of largely unknowns.
The animation can appear inconsistent at times but the drawing style is both unique and enchanting. This is a far better work than the BBC production, which featured terrible production design and acting and perhaps the most fake-looking Aslan possible.
The story is well-known but for those who are unfamiliar with the novel or the adaptations the story revolves around four children who are sent to live with a professor. There they find a passage to a mysterious land known as Narnia through the back of a giant wardrobe. Narnia is a world in a state of perpetual winter due to the rule of the evil White Witch. But, the childrens arrival has been foretold and a determined group of magical creatures, led by the noble lion Aslan believe they are the ones predicted to deliver Narnia from the witch's iron grip.
This is a "kid-safe" production that parents need not worry about showing to their children, the action scenes are done just right and the dark moments are not taken too seriously, and yet there is enough intellect in the exposition to satisfy adults.
The music by Michael J. Lewis is also a highlight which is full of light and fits the scenes perfectly.
There are two versions of this movie available on DVD. In an unusual move the cheaper of the two is actually better. Whereas the more expensive version clocking in at just under $25 has only some trailers, the cheaper one (for about $14 or less) has information on Lewis and the Narnia books). Certainly the cover and menu's may be better on the more expensive one, but other than that the cheaper version is the easier one to recommend.
Just like I remember it!.......2006-03-25
Now THIS is the original I remember from my childhood!! Great movie for adults who want to "go back" and great for kids to see before they see "Narnia" in the theater.

Great Goodtimes movie!.......2006-02-19
Leo the Lion (1994) is one of the most original animated movies to come out of the Goodtimes animation studio. Although often compared to Disney's The Lion King (also 1994), Leo the Lion - King of the Jungle is actually quite different from the famous Disney film. While Disney's The Lion King was more about an animal monarchy facing hard times, Goodtimes' Leo the Lion is more about fatherhood and responsability, but one of the biggest differences is that Goodtimes' film features men as villains, so it is more possible for this film to be compared with Disney's Bambi.
In Leo the Lion - King of the Jungle, Leo is a selfish and uncaring lion who hides under his crown to be rude and treat the other animals in whatever mean way he can, just to get his way. However, it all changes when he meets Tooey, the young lion cub who's just lost his mother to the greedy circus men. Tooey is lonely and desperate, so he runs to Leo for help who at first turns him down and tries to send him away, but soon afterwards takes him along. Tooey trusts Leo to help him find his mother, but Leo believes that that isn't his responsability and that a king has more important things to do, it is then Leo realizes his true possition in the jungle and learns his true responsability.
Goodtimes' animated features are known for relatively cheap and lifeless animation, but that usually doesn't take the charm away from the film, and although the animation in this movie is quite poor, the picture is sharp and the colors are vivid, quite unlike other cheap releases of Disney animated features with washed out colors and unaudible sound. This film is great for little kids, but animation-loving adults shouldn't expect to find a treat for themselves here. Remember, Disney may be for all ages, but Goodtimes is for the kids! Other great Goodtimes tales include Thumbelina (1992), The Little Mermaid (1992) and Cinderella (1994).
What??.......2002-11-02
This has to be one of the least inventive movies ever made. I mean, who could even think that it was possible for a man-eating computer to.... oh wait, wrong movie.
I give it 5 stars.

Hmmmmm.............2004-05-26
This movie was a hit with me when I was about 3, but now I cannot seem to take it anymore. The theme song goes on forever, the words are scratchy, and you seem to get lost in the plot.By the end, I was asleep. I think this movie is excellent for young viewers, but definitely not for me.
Classic anime, rarely seen........2003-10-31
As Amazon's database becomes more and more scrambled, this review may appear on the wrong page. I am reviewing the tape "Leo the Lion: Leo Becomes a Father", featuring Leo the white lion -- this is NOT about the Goodtimes cheapie movie.
This is one of the best episodes from the TV series that was produced in 1966 as a sequel to the classic Kimba the White Lion. In this show Kimba is an adult (now given his original Japanese name, "Leo") and is the proud father of two cubs. His son seems to need an attitude adjustment, so Leo gives the cub a view of the world somewhat similar to that which Leo had to face as a cub. It's a strong story, and I'm surprised that some adults react poorly to it. It's a shame that this tape has nearly 4 minutes cut out of the story.
This video tape was manufactured by a small company with variable quality. You may get an SP copy, you may get an EP copy. You may get a HiFi soundtrack, you may not. Video quality is decent.
This episode's scene of celebration over the birth of the cubs was expanded with a big animation budget into the opening sequence of the Jungle Emperor Leo movie, now available on DVD.
One episode from the sequel to Kimba The White Lion.......2003-10-31
As Amazon's database becomes more and more scrambled, this review may appear on the wrong page. I am reviewing the tape "Leo the Lion: Map of Danger", featuring Leo the white lion -- NOT the cheapie movie on GoodTimes home video.
The history of this show is that Kimba the White Lion was such a success the Japanese producers went ahead with a sequel series showing Kimba as an adult lion. But they didn't have a contract to export the show, so an English-language version had to wait 18 years. Leo The Lion (Leo was the Japanese name for Kimba) was dubbed in English in 1984, by an entirely different cast than that who worked on Kimba. Some script changes were added to distance the Leo The Lion shows from Kimba.
This episode, The Map of Danger, is not one of the strongest in the series. The story is that if the animals will get together and report dangerous areas, then all can avoid those areas. It's not a bad story, but doesn't advance the overall epic story of Kimba/Leo.
This video tape was produced by a small company with varible quality. You may get an SP copy, you may get an EP copy. You may get a HiFi soundtrack, you may not. Video quality is decent. 3 minutes have been removed from the episode for no apparent reason.
Rare opportunity to see Osamu Tezukaýs "Jungle Emperor Leo".......2003-07-14
This is an episode of the second "Jungle Emperor Leo" animated series, the first of which ran on U.S. television in 1966 as "Kimba the White Lion." Both series were produced by pioneer Japanese animator Osamu Tezuka and based on his own long-running comic book. Here, Kimba has grown up to be an adult lion, Leo, who rules the jungle benevolently, but firmly. The series had harsh elements that made it more dramatic and realistic than most cartoon series of the 1960s, but also made it unacceptable for American TV, at least in the eyes of NBC executives at the time. Nearly two decades later, it played on the Christian Broadcasting Network with the violence, ironically, pretty much intact.
"The Blue Lion" tells the story of Zamba, a blue-skinned lion who invades Leo's jungle with his own pride of lion followers and tries to topple Leo from his throne. It's a particularly violent episode, with lots of brutal lion-to-lion combat as Leo and Zamba bite, scratch and grapple at close quarters. Zamba and his lions are also seen attacking, killing and eating some of the animals in Leo's charge, especially giraffes and zebras. When Zamba's aging uncle saves Leo and tells him the story of how Zamba was persecuted as a cub because he looked different, Leo resolves not to fight him anymore. Leo recalls how he was treated as a cub: "My name was Little Coward or, in the language of animals, Kimba." After one final confrontation with Leo, Zamba's closing lines are utterly heart-breaking.
It's a powerful story, beautifully told with stark, dramatic imagery, backed up by a moving orchestral score by Isao Tomita. The English dubbing is pretty awful on most of these tapes, but it's a little more tolerable here. The one thing I would take issue with is Leo's recollection of being called a little coward and his claim about the meaning of Kimba, the only direct reference to the original Kimba series I've heard in any of the Leo the Lion tapes. As I recall, Kimba was never a coward but was always a feisty, spunky, quick-to-fight little lion. There may have been times when he refused to fight an opponent and was accused of cowardice, but that's not the same as being called "Little Coward" throughout childhood as the English dubbing on this tape implies.
Africans encounter the grown Kimba in Tezukaýs famed series.......2003-07-14
This is an episode of the second "Jungle Emperor Leo" animated series, the first of which ran on U.S. television in 1966 as "Kimba the White Lion." Both series were produced by pioneer Japanese animator Osamu Tezuka and based on his own long-running comic book. Here, Kimba has grown up to be an adult lion, Leo, who rules the jungle benevolently, but firmly. The story was more dramatic and realistic than most cartoon series of the 1960s, too much so for American TV, at least in the eyes of NBC executives at the time. Nearly two decades later, it played on the Christian Broadcasting Network with the violence, ironically, left pretty much intact.
"The Golden Bow" tells the story of an African man, Banda, and his son, Batsu, the last members of the Luqua tribe, and their flight from rival warriors dressed in leopard skins who seek to take from Banda his tribe's legendary golden bow. When Leo suspects humans of killing animals in his jungle, he looks for the nearest humans and finds Banda. When Banda is cleared of suspicions, he tells Leo the story of his lost tribe, and Leo decides to help him fight off the leopard warriors.
It's a grimly serious story, with tragic elements, well-told and filled with the stark, dramatic, almost abstract imagery that distinguished the best episodes of this series. It's all enhanced by a full-bodied orchestral score (with some African motifs) by series composer Isao Tomita, who peppers the score with a beautifully plaintive trumpet lament. The English dubbing is pretty horrible, with two or three actors, seemingly, doing all of the voices, but at least the artwork and the music take up the slack. The depiction of the African natives is dignified and respectful, especially when compared to the racial caricatures employed in another Leo the Lion episode, "The Case of the Moonlight Stone," which featured a fat, stereotypical tribal chief and a white woman character in blackface.
