Quick wit, slapstick comedy, excellent puppets and puppetry conceived by Jim Henson, an astounding array of guest stars, and a whole lot of backstage chaos made The Muppet Show a favorite family show for a whole generation in the mid to late 1970's and those same ingredients make it equally enjoyable for today's audiences. The 24 episodes of this second 1976 season of The Muppet Show represent the family variety show at its strongest, with familiar characters like host Kermit the Frog, his assistant Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy, Rolph the piano playing dog, and regular segments like "Pigs in Space," "Veterinarian's Hospital," "Swedish chef," and "At the Dance." Intermingled throughout are silliness, skits, and songs featuring an impressive roster of guest stars including entertainment greats like Judy Collins, Don Knotts, Bernadette Peters, Dom Deluise, George Burns, John Clese, and Bob Hope. The hilarious predicaments of the Muppets and their guest stars are absolutely timeless and the look back in time at the earlier careers of enduring stars like Steve Martin, Julie Andrews and Elton John is equally fascinating. Highlights of this second season are Kermit's emotional ballad "It's Not Easy Being Green," Judy Collins classic rendition of "Send in the Clowns," the two old men's curmudgeonly and witty criticism of every show, Miss Piggy's determined and amorous pursuit of Kermit, and the Swedish Chef's bumbling inability to catch up with the chicken. Bonus features include the rare 1974 Muppets Valentine Special featuring a young Mia Farrow and a host of virtually unknown Muppet characters including the enormous blue monster, Thog. Also included is Muppets' music video of "Keep Fishin'," and interview footage of "The Muppets on the Muppets." Whether reliving childhood evenings spent with family around the television or experiencing The Muppet Show for the first time, viewers of all ages will adore this second season. --Tami Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars About time!.......2007-06-27

I received season one as a Christmas present for me, but our toddler LOVES them. Finally, something I don't mind letting her watch. Although, she thinks cows say "Mah-nah mah-nah"!
I forgot how much the characters appearance changed over the course of time. The line-up of stars looks even more impressive for season two.

Please keep the seasons coming!

5 out of 5 stars Finally, season 2.......2007-05-19

I think I speak for everyone when I say "it's about time". These Jim Henson box sets are always a bit pricey, but they are always top quality. I don't know about everyone else, but I'm much more likely to purchase TV series when all the seasons are released. So my message to the manufacturer: "hurry up and keep em coming" !

they just dont have entertainment like this on TV anymore

(The special's Koozebanian Mating Ritual sketch was redone on a Season One show with guest Florence Henderson.)

Season One: Winner of the Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy its first year out, Arrested Development is the kind of sitcom that gives you hope for television. A mockumentary-style exploration of the beleaguered Bluth family, it's one of those idiosyncratic shows that doesn't rely on a laugh track or a studio audience; it's shot more like a TV drama, albeit with an omniscient narrator (executive producer Ron Howard) overseeing the proceedings. Holding the Bluths together just barely is son Michael Bluth (Jason Bateman), the only normal guy in a family that's chock full of nuts. Hardworking and sensible, Michael's certain he's going to be given control of his family's Enron-style corporation upon the retirement of his father (Jeffrey Tambor). The fact that he's passed over instead for his mother (Jessica Walter) is only a blip when compared to his father's immediate arrest for dubious accounting practices, and the resulting freeze on the family's previously limitless wealth.

Bereft of money, and even less family love, the Bluths have to band together in their moment of need--not easy when everyone's looking out for number 1. In addition to his scabrous parents, Michael has to contend with his lothario older brother (Will Arnett), his basically useless younger brother (Tony Hale), his greedy twin sister (Portia DeRossi), and her sexually ambiguous husband (David Cross). Michael's only comrade in sanity is his son George Michael (Michael Cera), but then again, the teenage boy harbors a secret crush on his cousin (Alia Shawkat). A peerless ensemble led by the brilliant Bateman (who ever knew he could be this good?), all the actors are pitch-perfect in their roles, delivering the dryly funny, sometimes absurdist dialogue with the speed and flair of classic farce. The unusual tone of Arrested Development takes a bit of getting used to--it's far different from anything you'll see on TV, even HBO--but once you buy in to the Bluths' innumerable dysfunctions, you'll be laughing your head off for hours.--Mark Englehart

Season Two: The axe of cancellation dangled perilously over Arrested Development during its second season, but the award-winning comedy fought against fate to deliver a hilarious if scattershot 18 episodes (reduced from the original show order of 22), and stayed alive for the beginning of a third season. Most likely, the creators and actors knew the clock was ticking down, so they didn't hesitate to throw their all into these manic, hilarious episodes, which have only the thinnest of plot arcs but an electrifying energy that makes them hard to resist. Some of the story antics were more of the same: good son Michael (Jason Bateman) tries to keep his company afloat, but is often foiled by older brother Gob (Will Arnett); the precarious marriage of Lindsay (Portia de Rossi) and Tobias (David Cross) undergoes a trial separation; and young George-Michael (Michael Cera) fights his attraction to his cousin Maeby (Alia Shawkat). Other show developments, though, were new and stunningly, uproariously bizarre: Buster (Tony Hale) joins the army, but later finds his hand bitten off by a seal (yes, a real seal), and Oscar (Jeffrey Tambor), the hippie brother of jailed George Sr. (also Tambor), rekindles an affair with sister-in-law Lucille (Jessica Walter), which may have resulted in Buster's conception years ago.

Jokes flew fast and furious, as did guest stars--Ben Stiller, Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, Christine Taylor, Thomas Jane, Ed Begley Jr., Ione Skye, and Zach Braff among them--making it hard to keep straight who was doing what and why. No matter, as each of the episodes was in and of itself was a perfect gem of comedy, strung together by sharp writing and fantastic performances. In addition to the regular cast, both Liza Minnelli, reprising her role as "Lucille Two," and Martin Short, as an, um, eccentric family friend, deserve special mention, with the episode both appeared in, "Ready, Aim, Marry Me," a frenetic exercise in slapstick farce. Typical examples of the show's offbeat humor were found in "Afternoon Delight," in which various members of the Bluth family discover the true meaning of the '70s ballad, "Meet the Veals," wherein the Bluths encounter the conservative parents of George Michael's girlfriend, and "Motherboy XXX," surrounding an unsettling mother-son traditional dance. The entire cast cohered perfectly through this season, and their give and take provided a perfect balance among the actors, all of whom were even better than the previous year. However, it's Bateman who should be singled out as the show's anchor, mixing dry sarcasm with impeccable comic timing. Despite plummeting ratings, Arrested Development didn't just keep its head above water, it swam with grace and hilarity. --Mark Englehart

Season Three: Arrested Development--one of the greatest comedies in the history of television--went out in a blaze of glory. The truncated final season packed more biting humor per minute than ever before. In only 13 episodes, dozens of intertwining storylines spun in all directions: In addition to the overarching story about the fractious infighting of the Bluth family and the family's housing development company being investigated for treason in Iraq (a plot arc that comes to a dazzlingly surreal conclusion), the put-upon "good son" Michael Bluth (Jason Bateman, Teen Wolf Too) pursues romance with a lovely British woman (Charlize Theron, Monster) who turns out to be woefully inappropriate; swaggering magician Gob (Will Arnett, Monster-In-Law) flees from his newly-discovered teenage son while still pandering for the affection of his self-absorbed father (Jeffrey Tambor, The Larry Sanders Show); flighty Lindsay (Portia de Rossi, Ally McBeal) and her sexually blurry husband Tobias (David Cross, Mr. Show) both get the hots for the family's new lawyer, Bob Loblaw (Scott Baio, Charles in Charge); and much, much more. It's difficult to describe what makes Arrested Development so brilliant. The ensemble is uniformly superb (Jessica Walter, as the family's boozing, scheming matriarch, is particularly devastating this season) and the surprising guest stars (including Andy Richter, James Lipton, Justine Bateman, and many others) are perfectly cast; the characters' abominable behavior defies conventional television notions of "likability", yet they only grow more endearing the more you watch; the humor embraces wild slapstick and sharp satire, often within a single scene; and the nimble documentary style allows for sly glancing references to jokes and scenes from long-past episodes, rewarding devoted fans. But the key is that, no matter how screwball Arrested Development becomes, the show offers a rich, textured, and wonderfully coherent world in which these characters feel genuine, a world completely unlike the flat, plastic simulacrum offered by the average sitcom. Arrested Development was true to itself to the end. Its followers will cherish it forever. --Bret Fetzer

Garry Shandling wraps up the run of his groundbreaking HBO comedy series in definitive yet nostalgic fashion in this boxed set, wryly titled Not Just the Best of The Larry Sanders Show. Now there's truth in advertising. Along with 23 of what Shandling felt were the best episodes of the show's run (89 episodes from 1992-98) comes eight hours of newly produced material, including a feature-length "making of" documentary, cast and star interviews, deleted scenes, commentaries, and footage of Shandling on personal visits with stars like Alec Baldwin, Jon Stewart, and Jerry Seinfeld. The personal visits are some of the most interesting moments (a breakfast with Sharon Stone is so strained and forced it's hard not to laugh) and the new features bring so much of Garry's personal thoughts and feelings into play that maybe this set would have been better named Being Garry Shandling. But it seems only fair to get such a subjective and in-depth personal view on the series from the man who made awkward self-consciousness a comedic art form.

The Larry Sanders Show was at the forefront of changing the genre of TV comedy, and influenced the development of many shows to follow, like Curb Your Enthusiasm, Arrested Development, and both versions of The Office. The source of that inspiration is on full display here, as talk-show host Larry Sanders (Shandling) along with his producer Artie (Rip Torn) and his "poor deluded bastard" sidekick Hank (Jeffrey Tambor), struggles to keep his late-night talk show on the air despite dropping ratings, absurd notes from the network, and a hilarious tendency to self-sabotage his personal life. His guest stars, including some of the biggest names in show business, seem to enjoy lampooning their images and provide some of the sharpest comic moments. It's great stuff, and it's too bad all six seasons are not scheduled to be released on DVD. Shandling reportedly went this route with the release, rather than continuing with complete seasons, because of a desire to wrap it all up at once after a long legal battle with producer Brad Grey. While many fans might bemoan the fact that there will be no complete-season sets of The Larry Sanders Show released after this, there are episodes from all six seasons here to enjoy, including the first and the double-part finale. With a gem like this, it's better to savor what's available than to lament what might have been. --Daniel Vancini

Product Description

Undeniably the hippest show to air on cable in the 1990s, The Larry Sanders Show takes you backstage at a fictional late night talk show with real-life guests from movies, music and television. The Larry Sanders Show was ahead of its time, becoming an immediate critical and audience hit for its satirical, tongue-in-cheek look at Hollywood. The series that combined documentary-like camerawork with a clever blend of fact and fiction set the standard of quality for HBO and influenced the development of shows like Sex and the City, Six Feet Under, The Sopranos, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and The Office.

Not Just the Best of the Larry Sanders Show features more than 8 hours of newly-produced material including Garry Shandling in personal and intimate visits with friends like Alec Baldwin, Tom Petty, Sharon Stone, Jerry Seinfeld, and Jon Stewart and including the compellingly entertaining, feature-length documentary, "The Making of The Larry Sanders Show."

5 out of 5 stars Garry Shandling's Love Child.......2007-07-08

Prior to this DVD's release, I read interviews with Shandling who talked of his love and affection for The Larry Sanders Show and how the DVD had become a labour of love for him.

He wasn't wrong.

Shandling has devoted himself to this DVD set. You could almost dust each box for his fingerprints - and I bet they'd come up too! The man has laid himself bare across almost the whole of the multitude of extras you get here. It's actually fascinating to learn that the "friendship" between Larry and David Duchovny, is not that far from the friendship between Shandling & Duchovny. You also learn that Shandling had a relationship with Sharon Stone in the 1980s, which makes the 'Sharon Stone' episode all that more "real". And you actually feel, during their Personal Visit together, that she still has feelings for him (that's Shandling, not Sanders!!!).

On top of the 23 episodes included, you also get the following...

More Personal Visits:
RIP TORN & JEFFREY TAMBOR
ALEC BALDWIN
TOM PETTY
JON STEWART (not so much a 'personal visit' as a strange live, backslapping phone call with video cameras, even though both of them live in LA!!)
ELLEN DEGENERES
JERRY SEINFELD
CAROL BURNETT
LINDA DOUCETT

Cast Interviews:
PENNY JOHNSON
JEREMY PIVEN
JANEANE GAROFALO
WALLACE LANGHAM
SCOTT THOMPSON
LINDA DOUCETT
MARY LYNN RAJSKUB
BOB ODENKIRK
SARAH SILVERMAN

Extensive Documentary (75min)
Deleted Scenes
Audio Commentaries (by Shandling, with writers & director)

Incidentally, the documentary ends with a perfect twist of Larry Sanders irony, when Bruno Kirby pops up on set to host the documentary, only to be told by Shandling that Greg Kinnear has already done it.

"You're bumping me from the DVD???"

You then learn this was Kirby's last ever piece on camera, before his death. But what a great final piece, it was.

This really is a superb DVD set. Yes, there is a lot of fan-griping about why only Season #1 has been released in its entirety but it's still early days. I firmly believe the remaining seasons will follow - after all, Shandling won't need to film any more extras (well, maybe the odd commentary), so it should be a straight case of 'transfer, print & distribute'.

I do have one small gripe, however. In a conversation, Shandling has with one of the writers, it comes to light the writer had the idea of a scene where Hank's girlfriend leaves her young son with him at the office, where Hank proceeds to trail around all day with the kid on a dog leash, so the little mite doesn't get lost. At the time, Shandling wouldn't allow it (not on any moral grounds, but on the grounds he didn't feel it was something someone would actually do). But surely, if there was one person in the Larry Sanders office that would've held a young boy on a leash all day, in some misguided way of keeping the boy safe - it would be Hank! Now, that would have been a great scene - and, you get the impression, the writer is still a bit pissed off about it. Anyway, that's a gripe about Shandling, not about the DVD.

Again, this is a great 4-disc set - perfect for any Larry Sanders/Garry Shandling fanatic. Like everyone else, I'm now just waiting for the remaining seasons to make their way to DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Talk About An Overlooked Series!.......2007-07-02

I'm what you might call a Seinfeld-fanatic. I pretty much have thought of it as the pinnacle of TV comedy for years now and Larry David's Curb Your Enthusiasm came in a close second for the longest time.

But you know what? That was before I watched The Larry Sanders Show. I never even knew of its existence up until a couple months ago and Garry Shandling was just some weird looking unknown comedian in my mind. Imagine my surprise when I learn that not only is Shandling very funny, but that Rip Torn and Jeffery Tambor are in the show as well...AND even funnier! By the end of this boxset I was eagerly looking forward to picking up Season 1 of the show. I was even thinking this show MIGHT be better (overall) than Seinfeld.

Don't get me wrong though, it's not like this way of thinking happened instantly. In fact, at first glance, the show is kinda underwhelming. None of the characters are zany and goofy (even Hank Kingsley isn't a goofball idiot all the time) and it really isn't like any other comedy you've seen. It even does a better job of one-camera use than Arrested Development (a show that relies heavily on narration to create humor) and once you start to focus on the nuances of the show, you'll see that this was not some cheesy Friends or Will & Grace show that was thrown together two minutes before filming.

The characters are great, the acting is dead-on, the jokes are hilarious and even though the show has a "Dramady" feel to it because of the off-screen documentary style of filming, you never get sappy "Full House" or "Friends" moments. This is a comedy series through and through and is one of the very best shows I have ever seen...and I've seen a lot.

4 out of 5 stars Almost the best........2007-06-27

Having seen the original series on HBO and not having seen it again until now, the show itself still gets 5 stars. Among a cast of great actors, Rip Torn is still our favorite. We also enjoyed the behind the scenes commentary from various actors on the show (some are better than others). I docked a star because the extra current interviews Gary does with actors that were once guests on the show are interesting but a little tedious. You gotta be a die hard fan to get through them, we are and did. If you're not a big Shandling fan you might just want a DVD of the shows themselves.

3 out of 5 stars Below average production quality and not as funny as I remember.......2007-06-21

I recalled the laughs I got from the Larry Sanders Show when it originally aired and looked forward to this DVD. As mentioned in other reviews, the picture quality is unexplainably poor, but it doesn't detract too much from the viewing experience. However, I found quite a few of the shows to be not nearly as funny as I recall; in fact some episodes are real duds. The selected episodes in my opinion don't reflect the best the show had to offer. Some of the special features are interesting, such as the breakfast with Sharon Stone. But, by and large, this DVD is a bit disappointing.

1 out of 5 stars you may be satisified, but i am not.......2007-06-21

it is because we are such huge fans that we are so disappointed. you don't have to explain how well the show has aged - most people posting these messages own the first season and have been waiting for the rest of the episodes for several years. i see zero benefit in some "lovingly-prepared best-of" - save the fluff and nonsense and give me the complete set of episodes. i agree with other fans here who say save your money and send them a message. in a day when the worst series of all time get complete releases, to not have a complete larry sanders is a sad joke. i will be waiting for a complete release - period.

2 out of 5 stars A Word of Warning........2007-07-05

This season they have changed a couple of things. First, no funny bloopers on the last disc like seasons past. Second, you can no longer select a "PLAY ALL" option. That is a very bad decision if you ask me. Every TV show DVD should have that. I like to sleep with the TV set on a timer at night. And I'll play an entire TV show disc. You can't do that when they remove the entire option like they did with this season. Lastly, they changed the type of case. It is no longer a fold out gate box. It's 3 mini thin DVD cases in a slip case. Not that that's bad, but I hate it when they do that when earlier seasons were different. Your collection will not be uniform. So despite this being a great show. The lack of effort all of a sudden is easliy noticable. They wen't "cheap" on us. Cosby Show deserves better than this.

5 out of 5 stars Back to the 80s.......2007-07-03

My husband and I loved this show when we were growing up. It's so family oriented and teaches good values.

4 out of 5 stars Great Show-DVD features limited.......2007-07-02

Brilliant series-one of the all time great family shows-Uplifting, encouraging and down right funny. The only down side in the recent season releases (season 3-4) is that there are no "real" special features on the DVD's.(Hence the 4 star rating)
But I will still but the next seasons when they come out. Highly recommend!

5 out of 5 stars Cosby Show 3rd Season.......2007-06-27

My grandson, who isn't quite 4 years old, loves the Cosby show (as I do, too) and he especially loves, as he calls it, "The Snake Show", which in reality is the 1st episode. I believe that this is one of the best family sitcoms of all time.

4 out of 5 stars Love the Cosby Show but DVD is lacking extras.......2007-06-12

Don't get me wrong... I love the Cosby Show but I was expecting to find extras in this release. There are no bloopers, deleted scenes, themes, etc. I was disappointed to not find those items.

To bridge the gap between the smash hit Disney Channel original movie and its 2007 sequel, the cast of High School Musical embarked on a North American tour in 2006-2007. If you missed out on the experience of hearing thousands of screaming tween-age kids (probably 80% girls), never fear: the concert is now on DVD. The almost-complete cast comes out to perform every number from the movie, plus numbers by Vanessa Hudgens ("Say OK"), Corbin Bleu ("Push It to the Limit," "Marchin'"), and Ashley Tisdale ("We'll Be Together"), all promoting their solo albums. It's not a stage version of the show--while there's choreography and video clips, the songs aren't performed in order and there's no plot explanation. And at 56 minutes, it's a bit shorter than the actual show was (missing some solo numbers and stage banter). But the kids put out tons of energy and continually thank their fans. Also on hand are Lucas Grabeel, who serves as MC, and Monique Coleman. The only principal absent is Zac Efron (who was filming Hairspray), but Drew Seeley (who cowrote "Get'cha Head in the Game" and reportedly dubbed Efron in the movie) does a good job filling in. DVD bonus features include four songs from the opening set by Jordan Pruitt, a nine-minute making-of featurette, an option to choose camera angles, and a half-minute peek at High School Musical 2. --David Horiuchi

Most of the television stars will be a part of the cast, including Vanessa Anne Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Lucas Grabeel, Corbin Bleu and Monique Coleman, with Drew Seeley (who wrote "Get'cha Head in the Game") taking the part played by Zac Efron on TV.

5 out of 5 stars Just awesome .......2007-07-04

I just love this dvd the perfomances are awesome and the singing and dancing are awesome too. My dvd came with a High School Musical 2 poster inside the dvd case. Also Ashley and Vanessa songs are on this dvd.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed in this new extreme line.......2007-06-30

Well I am glad I got the movie from netflex cause the movie was less then a hour and not all songs from the real concert was shown?

The backstage stuff was nothing.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good but not amazing, and it's not extreme.......2007-06-29

The Title is Extreme Access Pass but what we get is not even a full concerts. The cd quality is great but the special features that been advertised is not as good as we're expected. We kinda already see everything in TV. the only good thing is just when Lucas give tour on the road. But it's only 5 minutes...
The rest is just the same as we usually in TV...

One thing that makes me wonder is that how come Corbin get 2 songs ( Marchin and Push it to the limit ) while Ashley and Vanessa, each only get one song ... That bugs me a lot..

The coolest thing is maybe the DIRECT features..... we can see what happened backstage while the casts do their things in the stage... but then again, it just a really small clip.

But If you are HSM fan, this CD is a must have. I just hope that Disney won't make another DVD for the concert again, You know.... maybe the next DVD will feature even more features with title HSM,the concert- VERY EXTREME ACCESS PASS. LoL..

4 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-06-26

I went to the concert and I could not wait until this DVD came out so my whole family could see it. I especially wanted them to see Lucas. When I got it, a lot of Lucas' parts were cut out, so it was disappointing. I wish the DVD was the whole concert. At least they could have told everyone that parts would be cut out instead of advertising it as "The Concert." They could have instead called it "High School Musical-Part of the Concert."

Description

The Cosby Show appeared on NBC from 1984 to 1992, becoming one of the most popular programs in the history of television. The Cosby Show depicted a close-knit and prosperous African-American family (The Huxtables) that dwelled in New York City. Dr. Heathcliff (OB-GYN) and Clair (attorney) Huxtable were a happily married, dual-profession couple with aspirations of raising their 5 children in an uplifting, positive environment. The Cosby Show held TV's #1 slot for a record 5 consecutive years (1985 to 1990) and stayed in the Top 20 shows for all eight seasons it was on NBC.

5 out of 5 stars Subtitles??? what the Junk!!.......2007-07-06

My wife and I love the Cosby show. we are collecting the whole run of shows. when we got this season and season 3 in the mail. we were excited. we watched almost the entire season 3 in one weekend. the subtitles are retarded and I think its a flaw in the DVD mastering. Everytime you start an episode, the subtitles are on and I have to go through and shut them off. not a big deal, but Its an annoyance I have never encountered. other than that, Highly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars Good dvd but bad options.......2007-06-24

I agree with another user who posted his review of it. I love the show, but like he said there is no select play all episodes. I hate having to pick and choose what episode, and i hate that subtitles come standard on the episode. If i forget to turn it off, i must stop the dvd go back to the menu, and change it. After awhile you get sick of it. Unless theres a way to make it not standard when you turn on the dvd, it gets really annoying.

Don't get me wrong... I love the Cosby Show but I was expecting to find extras in this release. There are no bloopers, deleted scenes, themes, etc. I was disappointed to not find those items.

3 out of 5 stars Happy but still not satisfied..........2007-06-06

I purchased this DVD yesterday from Target.

Before I start, I must say that I grew up watching the Cosby Show and Different World and I love both of these shows. But to see these great shows being `brushed' under the rug when it comes to getting their DVDs out is very disheartening. My husband is tickled at me because I am so upset at `them', whoever it is that owns the licenses, ok'd making the DVDs. I believe the Cosby Show was a milestone for blacks on TV; they made everyone want to be a Cosby kid. They showed that blacks can and do achieve professional successes and we raise clean, decent kids. And to see that they having such a hard time getting the DVDs out is pathetic. I always check to see what other old TV shows have DVDs out there; when I see Alf, Punky Brewster and The Greatest American Hero (all seasons) --- You got to be kidding me!!!... The DVD list goes on and on.... Not saying these shows are not great... I use to watch those too... but what these shows have nothing on the Cosby show; but those shows have most if not all of their seasons on the DVD.

Well, I am getting off my soap box. Again I am glad to have the DVD. However, I kind of feel let down at the quality of the DVD. I have seen more options on the DVDs of Sunday Services at church. I purchased $5 dvds with more bells and whistles. The only options available are to select an episode to view or choose subtitles. At least on the DVDs for the previous two seasons, you could choose to play 1 episode or all episodes.

Nevertheless, I am glad that it is for sale.

5 out of 5 stars Finally!.......2007-05-20

Of course I already own seasons 1 and 2 and it has been fun re-watching my favorite show growing up. My son has also fallen in love with the show. He especially loves Rudy while I like the older kids because I was a young teen when this show started. For later seasons, we rely on the old VHS recordings my dad has kept over the years, but they may not last much longer. I'm glad that more seasons of this great show are being released. Like an earlier viewer stated, this show is so much better than current T.V. and I'm thrilled that my son can grow up watching them too. He is growing up watching the shows my husband and I enjoyed as kids. Okay, so he's out of touch with current pop culture, but is that such a bad thing when he can see a great role model like Bill Cosby? I highly recommend this show.

The charm, the zaniness, the corny jokes, the showbiz cliches--every element of The Muppet Show holds up 30 years after Jim Henson's legendary variety series' debut season. Well, perhaps not everything: Today's younger viewers might have a hard time placing some of The Muppet Show's then-guest stars, such as Florence Henderson or Ruth Buzzi. But then, the Show's real celebrities are perennial icons Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Gonzo the... whatever, Fozzie Bear, Animal, and the rest of the Muppets' harried, well-meaning family of entertainers. Season One finds the show pretty much in the basic shape longtime fans will remember: A musical introduction followed by backstage chaos, another musical number, a sketch, a scene with the guest star, and so on. A half-hour episode can fly by pretty quickly, but it's interesting to note that the series hadn't quite found its familiar tone through much of the first year. A reliance on too many disposable verbal jokes and redundant, so-so material for sketch fodder ultimately gives way to more creative premises and the development of key relationships between characters. By the final half-dozen episodes in the first season, The Muppet Show is truly cooking. Season highlights include Kermit's confession to guest Juliet Prowse that he always wanted to be a dancer, and Prowse's comparison of the little green superstar to Robert Redford. Joel Grey does a cabaret-style act for a roomful of Muppets and is later outraged when Kermit's introduction of the actor proves so thorough there is nothing left for the latter to say. Rita Moreno proves quite game in a funny piece, set in a French cafe, in which her dance with a man-size Muppet turns from romantic to table-smashing violent. Harvey Korman plays bumbling ringmaster Maurice the Magnificent, easily the worst animal trainer in history. Phyllis Diller bats out shameless one-liners ("I sang 'Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star,' and it fell on me"), and Vincent Price toys with his own horror film image by playing a ghoul who turns into a maudlin orchestra conductor at midnight. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars What is there to say? Muppet show rocks!!!.......2007-07-03

Instant hit with 18-month old. We're on a sesame street and muppet show frenzy. And they're fun for mom and dad, too!

5 out of 5 stars pretty darn good deal.......2007-06-26

I went to a consignment shop and found this used for $25. thankfully I already bought this one. With free shipping and at $30 who can refuse? The quality is clear and crisp. Not a single scratch on the dvds. Not even the box was bent from shipment. If you are a fan, you will be very very pleased.

5 out of 5 stars The muppet show is a wonderful thing...........2007-06-25

But, I think they could've all fit on one DVD, not 4.
Too much packaging.

1 out of 5 stars Lots of hitting, exploding, meanness.......2007-06-16

I recently purchased this dvd set thinking it would be wholesome entertainment. Although there are some innocently funny jokes, there is a lot of hitting, bigger monsters eating and hurting smaller monsters, exploding heads and the like. I suppose some people find this funny, I don't. So, beware if you are trying to avoid violent programming. There is a substantial amount of violence throughout these shows.

5 out of 5 stars I Love It!!!.......2007-06-12

I have been a fan of the Muppets since I was a little girl! I remember the first time I saw the little creatures I thought they were real, but when I found out the were puppets and that people brought them to life they somehow became even more magical. The artistry that the performers posess is amazing and the fact that when you watch these episodes you forget they have people under them is proof that magic can happen!
I absolutely LOVE the Muppets and it was a very sad day when Jim Henson passed away. Thought the magic is still there, it's different and with these DVD's you can see the Henson magic all over again and relive the Joy he had in creating this world!

Light years before political correctness--1983 to be exact--or his comeback in tame Disney comedies, Eddie Murphy was a charismatic, wonderfully offensive, egocentric 22-year-old black comedian known for crude celebrity impersonations and often shockingly frank diatribes on racial and sexual politics. Dressed in a skin-tight red leather suit and delivering endless streams of obscenities faster than Richard Pryor ever did, Murphy is captured in this raunchy HBO special (a filmed document of his Grammy-winning album, Eddie Murphy, Comedian) at his confident, swaggering, comedic peak--a posture that soon disappeared after a string of bland Hollywood comedies. Here, however, his energy and sheer virtuosity command complete control over the audience for 107 minutes, whether he's mocking personalities like Elvis, James Brown, and Stevie Wonder, or spinning long, gag-filled personal anecdotes about the ice-cream man or dysfunctional family barbecues. There's no apologizing for the immature stereotyping, blatant homophobia, and sexism (though Murphy did so several years later) that surface during the routine. But, then again, unlike his much nastier, one-sided concert film, Raw, no topic here is safe from Murphy's uproarious tongue-lashings--including the comedian himself. --Dave McCoy

My favorite aunt and uncle rented this when I was 11. I don't know if they thought Eddie would be like "O-Tay" or had a clean act like Bill Cosby but thank God he didn't. What followed were some of the funniest, raunchiest, most quoted lines of comedy of my childhood. From the ice cream man to Aunt Bunny to G.I. Joe and all of the classics, they make you laugh just as much as they did 20+ years ago. I'm glad it's FINALLY out on DVD!

5 out of 5 stars I laughed.......2007-06-10

I laughed, I cried, I give 2 thumbs up!!! Funny as can be, and a classic!!! I recommend this to all comedy lovers!!!

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2007-05-17

I watched this when I was younger, maybe 14, and loved it; didn't get some of it then, but still loved it. Every now and then, I would think of it and wish I could see it again. I am so glad it's been re-released and is on DVD. Eddie Murphy is a funny man no matter what he is doing. I love all his movies. This is when he is only 22 years old and maybe some of his first work, but it is well worth the price to see it.
It shouldn't be seen by younger veiwers because of graphic language, but adults everywhere SHOULD see this and just have a laugh.

Culled from 30 years of material, this collection of moments from The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson contains some of most inspired bits of lunacy ever recorded. Whether cajoling with Hollywood's biggest stars or normal folk with special talents, Carson was a master of finding the right joke, with timing second to none. Along with bits of his opening monologues, skits, and early standup appearances from the likes of David Letterman and Eddie Murphy, there are many highlights with perhaps the perfect Carson guest--exotic animals that stole the show. This collection was released shortly after Carson's reign ended in 1992. Although most of the tapes from his first decade are lost, there are plenty of highlights from the '70s through the '90s. Also included is Carson's touching and historic "Final Show," which finds the host simply talking to his audience and showing highlights--or just the faces--from his years on the set. Although many followed--and a few have even succeeded--Carson's Midwest charm made him the king of TV in a period when America was defined by television.

The DVD edition adds some superlative extras, including "Danger Johnny" segments from his first decade, short bits on the history of the show and the host, and more behind-the-scenes glances, including an intriguing way to watch the final show via unedited feeds from isolated studio cameras. Also included is the 1982 NBC special "Johnny Goes Home," which follows Carson on a tour of his rural Nebraska homeland, and a slightly edited version of the penultimate show, in which his last two guests, Robin Williams and Bette Midler, are on fire. These extras make the DVD, produced a decade after Carson left, a must-have piece of entertainment and pop history. --Doug Thomas

Description

On his final Tonight Show telecast, Johnny Carson summed up the feelings of a nation of late night viewers. Host of the most highly-acclaimed late night show in television history, for seven presidential administrations, Johnny's monologue was a nightly barometer of the times. While his wide range of characters, comic impersonations and merry band of Tonight Show regulars became fixtures of pop culture, his guest list was a virtual Who's Who of show business legends, sports heroes, authors, heads of state, amazing animals and average citizens with above average talents. For fans of Johnny, The Tonight Show and 30 wonderful years of laughter, this is the definitive retrospective chronicling television's late night legend and legacy. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Heeeereee's Johnny! at his best!.......2007-07-07

If you're a Johnny Carson fan, this is manna from heaven. You've doubtless seen these clips before on the Tonight Show's anniversary shows, but the edited verson of each decade flows seamlessly through the years of the Tonight Show. The inclusion of Johnny comes home and the last two shows add some spice to the already sweet pot. The beauty of these DVDs is that you can show them to people who were just born when Johnny went off the air and they will love him.
"The answer is high five," says Karnak the Magnificient. "What will you give yourself after buying and watching this DVD collection."

5 out of 5 stars YOU MUST SEE 'THE GREAT FLYDINI"...THE BEST OF CARSON!.......2007-06-10

WE BOUGHT THIS SET AS A GIFT WITH INSTRUCTIONS ON FINDING THE SEGMENT OF STEVE MARTIN'S "GREAT FLYDINI" ROUTINE. THE RECIPIENT WATCHED IT OVER AND OVER AND WE MUTUALLY DECIDED MARTIN IS A COMIC GENIUS...AND THAT CARSON KNEW AND APPRECIATED THE BEST TALENT ON EARTH. MAKES A GREAT GIFT OF LAUGHTER.

4 out of 5 stars A More Definitive and Comprehensive Release Needed In Honor of Johnny.......2007-05-18

A lot has changed with " Johnny's Favorite Moments" since their original early 90's release on VHS. I picked up this set and noticed some skits were left off. The late Sam Kinison is a good example, and his Elvis lullaby ode to women who have torn his heart out.

Where is it? Another volume? I have noticed other volumes, but these are unavailable. I just remember there being so much more than what is on this DVD set.

Anyway, a more comprehensive/definitive release should be produced. The red carpet needs to be rolled out in honor of a comic genius and his wide-spread influence on an American mainstream audience that couldn't get enough of him. Wouldn't you agree?

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Johnny Carson Collection - His Favorite Moments from The Tonight Show (Vols. 1-3) (1962-1992).......2007-05-10

great dvd esp if you like johnny carson...it was great

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-04-11

The great comics that appeared for years on the Tonight Show, such as Don Rickles and Rodney Dangerfield, are largely ignored. All the great band music isn't here. Only one singer is featured, Bette Midler, crooning to Johnny on the final show. Only traces of the opening monologues appear. The best feature is a Steve Martin bit on the second disc: The Great Flydini. Now that's funny! But on the whole, this is a great disappointment, and certainly not worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars a good follow-up to volume 1.......2007-06-23

I have had this DVD for a couple of months now, and it has become one of my more frequently used workout videos. As with the first Biggest Loser workout, I really like the fact that you can mix and match workouts to suit you. The DVD contains 9 segments. After reading previous reviews, I tried all of them, not just those gender-specific to me. The Women's workouts tend to focus more on the hips, thighs and butt, while the Men's workouts work the arms and chest more. I tend to like Bob's training style over Kim's - she can be a little too 'aerobics instructor' for me. Still, I have to hand it to the girl, she does most of the exercises with you, and she's still able to talk and be perky doing it!

This volume also uses more equipment - several segments use the stability ball, and a medicine ball in addition to the hand weights used in the first volume. And while I enjoyed doing the arm and ab workout on the stability ball in the boot camp segment, I thought that the boot camp in Volume 1 still provided a better workout.

I also didn't particularly enjoy the Functional Flexibility segment, which focuses more on range of motion and slower movements. Not much in the way of cardio or weights as I have become accustomed to with BL workouts.

Also, as some other reviewers mentioned, a lot of product promotion went on. And there was less of the contestant's success stories, which I personally found to be motivating.

I still prefer the first volume over this one, but, in the end, it does provide a good workout. Like the previous volume, it is guaranteed to make you sweat, and work all those areas you want to target. Definitely, a lot of bang for your buck.

5 out of 5 stars A great workout for almost anyone!.......2007-06-12

I purchased the Vol 1 DVD and loved it and then I saw this and had to have it too. It was worth the money for sure! The short ten-fifteen minute workouts make it simple to mix and match. If I am having an off day or if I am feeling ready to take on the world, I can easily find the perfect combination of workouts to make me feel good. Plus, I appreciate that the people are real and that you can see them mess up too from time to time. If you are a woman, make sure to try out the Men's Sculpt segment because it is a quick 10 mins of weights that isn't very difficult.

5 out of 5 stars Love This!.......2007-04-09

I'm a huge fan of this show and watch it all the time! I was so excited to know that we could order this DVD and workout like they do! It's a very instructional DVD and you can customize it any way you would like to. It even has a workout type for women & men! It's a great addition to my other workouts!! Plus I love seeing the people from the show doing the workouts!

5 out of 5 stars What a great DVD!.......2007-03-10

I have quite a collection of workout videos and DVD's, but am always happy to add some more good ones! I really enjoy this DVD...the workouts are great, and very motivating! Also, it shows the week-by-week weight loss struggles and achievements of a couple of the actual show's participants. I highly suggest getting this one...even if you are beginner, you can workout without weights, and make the moves smaller...then kick it up when you get to that level!

Good luck with your fitness goals...do something good for yourself!

4 out of 5 stars It is a good workout.......2007-02-23

I am a fan of BL having lost 50lbs on my own before BL was out there. I got this as a Christmas gift after having my first child and it kicked my butt. One of my complaints is there is too much talk. I guess I prefer instruction without the chit chat about how I'm feeling it burn.. I prefer the segments with Bob in them over Kim partly because Bob seems a bit more down to earth, though Kim's segments are tough. My other problem is that there seems to be a lot squats & lunges in the different segments so there isn't much variety as I had hoped and the arms & abs only have the Bootcamp 15 minute workout (Granted I prefer toninng my abs, butt, & arms). I haven't tried the men sections but after reading a couple of posts I will. Overall it is a good workout!
