Product Description
2001: A Space Odyssey is a countdown to tomorrow, a road map to human destiny, a quest for the infinite. It is a dazzling, Academy Award-winning visual achievement, a compelling drama of man vs. machine, a stunning meld of music and motion. It may be the masterwork of director Stanley Kubrick (who co-wrote the screenplay with Arthur C. Clarke)... and it will likely excite, inspire and enthrall for generations.
To begin his voyage into the future, Kubrick visits our prehistoric ape-ancestry past, then leaps millennia (via one of the most mind-blowing jump cuts ever conceived) into colonized space, and ultimately whisks astronaut Bowman (Keir Dullea) into uncharted realms of space, perhaps even into immortality. "Open the pod bay doors, HAL." Let the awe and mystery of a journey unlike any other begin.

When Stanley Kubrick recruited Arthur C. Clarke to collaborate on "the proverbial intelligent science fiction film," it's a safe bet neither the maverick auteur nor the great science fiction writer knew they would virtually redefine the parameters of the cinema experience. A daring experiment in unconventional narrative inspired by Clarke's short story "The Sentinel," 2001 is a visual tone poem (barely 40 minutes of dialogue in a 139-minute film) that charts a phenomenal history of human evolution. From the dawn-of-man discovery of crude but deadly tools in the film's opening sequence to the journey of the spaceship Discovery and metaphysical birth of the "star child" at film's end, Kubrick's vision is meticulous and precise. In keeping with the director's underlying theme of dehumanization by technology, the notorious, seemingly omniscient computer HAL 9000 has more warmth and personality than the human astronauts it supposedly is serving. (The director also leaves the meaning of the black, rectangular alien monoliths open for discussion.) This theme, in part, is what makes 2001 a film like no other, though dated now that its postmillennial space exploration has proven optimistic compared to reality. Still, the film is timelessly provocative in its pioneering exploration of inner- and outer-space consciousness. With spectacular, painstakingly authentic special effects that have stood the test of time, Kubrick's film is nothing less than a cinematic milestone--puzzling, provocative, and perfect. --Jeff Shannon

A Must-Have for your DVD Library.......2007-07-07
2001 is a melding of two great minds - director Stanley Kubrick and great sci-fi author Arthur C. Clark. Based on Clark's short story "The Sentinel", the pair were not out to make a guns-blazing, alien-slaying movie like the popular Star Trek series. Instead, they were going in a completely different direction - exploring what makes a human a human, and how what we think and do defines us as intelligent creatures.
The result is a very visual, thought provoking movie that earned itself the #22 spot on the AFI top movies of all time listing. If you're an impatient sort, you'll get bored quickly. The movie is over 2 hours long and less than half of that has people speaking, never mind other more strenuous activity. It is a movie about you - the watcher - reacting and thinking about the situations. They don't tell you what to think or how to feel. You see what is going on, and you draw your own impressions, and come up with your own conclusions.
That's a lot to ask of an audience, and how you react to the movie will have a lot to do with your personality. Some people just aren't interested in this sort of slow going thoughtful exercise. And that's fine - there are plenty of action space movies out there. For those who seek something more intricate, grab a glass of wine, a plate of cheese and fruit, and sit back. You're in for a treat.
It's best if you watch this movie once through without reading a lot about the plot or its multiple layers of meaning - that way you can see it with a fresh mind and draw your own reactions and ideas from what you've seen. Undoubtedly you'll have questions about some areas! At that point, search the web and find the MANY discussions about this movie, unravelling the symbolism. See if you agree or disagree with what's being said, then watch it again. This is the type of movie you can watch again, every year, and learn something new from it.
Highly recommended.
Simply Outstanding.......2007-06-17
If you like science fiction then there is no doubt that first, you have probably already seen this. If not, then I can guarantee you that this will captivate you beyond belief. I can find few movies from its time to compare to this masterpiece.
Some have been posting that the quality of this version is not as good as they expected, or not as good as the original. Since I have never seen the original in VHS format, all I can say is that it's totally watch-able. I cannot however note the precision of the transfer of the veteran viewers.
Stanley Kubrick is one of the most ingenious film makers of all time. The cinematography of the film is incredible in the way he uses the limited special effects that were available at the time, and especially sound. The sound is one thing that I find that Stanley Kubrick knew how to use best. The voices that he used in this movie for the monolith gave a tide of mysteriousness, curiosity, and the potential to freak someone out.
He begins the movie displaying evolution and highlights particularly how apes gained intelligence by figuring out how to use bones as weapons. The movie then leaps forward to the space age, where a crew subsequently discovers a large, black, and mysterious object, known as the monolith, on the moon. The only thing the crew knew about this object is that it was buried on the moon 4 million years ago, deliberately.
On a spaceship heading towards Jupiter, the flawless computer known as HAL 9000, makes its first mistake, and begins the worry the crew with its erratic behavior. Afterwards, the mysterious monolith returns, but this time not on the moon.
2001 - A Space Odyssey is one of the best films of all time that I could not recommend more. The captivation will glue your eyes and ears to the screen.
Kubrick's Magnum Opus.......2007-06-05
Few auteurs in film history possess the visionary talent that Kubrick had. His Space Odyssey, the first film of its kind, proves that. Invoking awe and wonder in new audiences and old, the film stands the test of time and continues to inspire.
The film is meant to be viewed on a large auditorium screen, and though Kubrick was an avid supporter for mono sound, today's modern sound technology provides for a much better experience. The hums and clicks of the spaceships, the vaccuum of space, and the brilliant soundtrack create an eerie aura, made more believable with surround sound. The best way to view this film is to do so in a theatre. Kubrick intended for his audience to view the Odyssey on the big screen. This way, the film transports its audience to space itself, and embarks on a timeless journey for the ages. There are many long shots of spacecraft and nebulae that a television set simply can't reproduce on the same scale of the theatre. It's like viewing the Mona Lisa on a mail stamp.
The story should be familiar to audiences by now. On the surface, the plot is one of Kubrick's more simple ones, but critics go very deep into its symbols, allegories, and other interpretings. Many filmgoers are turned off by its curious ending, but that is because they simply don't understand it. Just keep in mind that the ending represents man's evolution.
As for the DVD, many complain that the transfer quality is poor, but I hold no grievances whatsoever. I enjoy viewing the film in its original state, just like its first audiences saw it. It is clean enough to enjoy without distraction, and the sound was upgraded to Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. If you are a true Kubrick nut, however, then you will want to alter the sound output to mono, but that option is up to your discretion.
Just another case of the "King's clothes"..........2007-05-25
Without a doubt one of the most overrated films of all time. It lacks substance and any memorable characters, and has no clear plot nor message. For God's sakes. the most memorable character is a voice. The reason so many "intelligent" viewers say it's great is because they feel they are supposed to; otherwise other "intelligent" viewers will dismiss them and say, "You just don't get it." I would go so far as to say no one gets it. Kubrick was so full of himself that he made a film that was totally self indulgent. If you question the greatness of his work then you must be questioning his greatness; and to do so would be "unintelligent". What a load! Granted he gave us a glimpse of what everyday life may be like in the future, but that alone does make for a great film. A 20 minute short could have done the same without being so presumptuous. If anyone disagrees, then by all means share with us what makes this film great. Please enlighten us but try not to sound too full of yourself.
do not do not watch this film on a 50 inch plasma tv.......2007-05-17
I love the movie for over 20 years but man if this wasn't the worst dvd transfer Ive seen. It's watchable from about 15 feet away but if you looked up close which I did & told my friend who owns the dvd and the tv "my god it's full of pixels"

Andrei Konchalovsky's expansive television mini-series production of Homer's epic poem gets off to clumsy start as he tries to squeeze the Trojan War into a mere half hour, but once the arrogant but honorable Odysseus (strikingly played by Armand Assante) and his loyal crew begin their doomed voyage home, this film turns into a fantastical adventure. Integrating often-stunning special effects with inventive art design, Konchalovsky achieves a beautiful look on a limited budget as he follows the 10-year ordeal of Odysseus from his battles with the Cyclops and the magical Circe (Bernadette Peters) to his secret homecoming and his confrontation with the treacherous Eurymachus (Eric Roberts). Isabella Rossellini appears as his spiritual guide, the goddess Athena, with Greta Scacchi as Odysseus's faithful wife and Vanessa Williams as the seductive Calypso. The rest of the cast includes Geraldine Chaplin, Jeroen Krabbé, Christopher Lee, and Irene Papas. The production was shot on location in and around the Mediterranean, making for a lush, lovely visual experience. --Sean Axmaker

The Odyssey is probably one of the most well-known stories of Western literature. It contains elements of suspense, action, adventure, fantasy, romance, and even some comedy. It is also quite long, and features a big cast of characters; human and non-human. With all of this, it would seem to be a perfect candidate for a top-notch movie. Surprisingly, Hollywood has made very few movies about this topic, with probably the best one being this production by Hallmark.
The storyline follows the original epic quite well in terms of action. The casting is better than average, as Armande Assante does look like he is of Mediterranean descent, and gratefully, does not speak with an English accent as Sean Bean's Odysseus in the movie "Troy". The special effects are as Hallmark movies go; believable but not extravagant. The dialogue is somewhat flat. For such a famous epic with so many hundreds of English translations, the director should have tried to make this tale like Kenneth Branagh with his Shakespeare movies; have the characters speak the dialogue from the original text. Other than that, no noticeable flaws. Nothing spectacular but still worth the 3+ hours to watch this movie.
More like a NEGATIVE 3.......2007-06-13
This comes close to being the worse piece of garbage it has ever been my privilege to view. The acting...HORRENDOUS!!! CGI...poorly done. Do yourself a favor and watch the Roman version of the Odyssey...Ulysses with Kirk Douglas. It may be an oldie, but it's definitely an absolute goodie!!
Mythological Fiction.......2007-05-26
This film is one of the better of this genre--due to the casting, and the more "true to life and literature" approach that is taken. The characters seem much more "human." Enough sexual content, albeit well done, to preclude viewing by even teenagers. Homer's story is followed pretty faithfully, too, from my distant memories. But the real "excellence" is in the acting.
Medicore Playback Abliltiy.......2007-05-14
The Movie in itself is a great movie however, there were a few times that the movie stopped and digital quality became distorted. I did not send it back because I did not want to go through with hassling of shipping it back. Let's just let bygones be bygones.:)
Sincerely
Stephanie Sims
A good tool but not a replacement for the real thing..........2007-05-13
Entertaining and they didn't add "extra" stuff, but a lot of details & characters are missing. I let my students watch selections from this film before reading The Odyssey. It was an effective motivation tool: Students put faces to characters when we read the real thing, had an idea where the story was "going," and it was neat when they noticed the differences.

Nice work.............2007-07-07
Should inspire many, like myself, to focus on 2012 as a fantastic opportunity to manifest a wondrous change in the direction humanity takes.....
Disappointed.......2007-07-06
I looked forward to seeing this video, but it was hard to follow and the visuals were somewhat repetitive. I started to watch on a medium-sized flat screen TV and thought I was having difficulty with my eyes as most of the interview sequences were out of focus. I asked a friend if it was me, but he agreed that the shots were indeed blurry. That was a huge distraction as my eyes tried in vain to compensate. I finally had to move to a tiny 12" TV set where the lack of focus was not as noticeable. Besides that particular production disappointment, the material was presented in a rather dull way. The main narrator had this Mother-Goose-Story-Teller way about her that didn't help. I think the material would have been better presented as an audio feature.
Excellent Information.......2007-06-27
The information was excellent but the movie dragged. It was difficult to keep focused. I will watch the movie again but break it up into shorter sessons so that I can concentrate on all the details. I will also let my children watch it in 15 minute sessions so they will be able to get the message.

This was a perfect introduction into this type of music and dance. We loved it. It will remain a favorite.
WOW!!!.......2007-05-25
I didn't want to leave the theater when I originally saw this film. Any musician, especially music teachers, will appreciate the multiculturalism that "Pulse" displays. (My students beg to watch this movie when I have a substitute.) "Pulse" is a great way to expose yourself and others to the vast variety of music that exists in our world. It is moving and absolutely breathtaking -- Enjoy!
Teachers.......2007-05-20
Pulse is an excellent video for the classroom. Students from elementary through high school will enjoy watching this video.
Finally!.......2007-03-21
I've waited a long time for this IMAX film to be put on DVD so I could share it with my music students. I'm so excited that it's finally available!
Everything is there, plus some cool extras.
However, my excitement is tempered by the following:
The only reason I give it four stars instead of five is that the film was simply compressed from IMAX down to a letterbox.
Everyone looks a bit squished - noticeably wider and shorter than they did in the film. This is unfortunate because in the extras, everyone is proportioned correctly, obviously filmed with regular film instead of IMAX film.
This DVD has been a long time coming.......2007-02-03
Pulse: A Stomp Odyssey works along the premise that music--and more accurately, rhythm--is the global language. To that end, the Stomp team has done a fantastic job of collecting and filming cultural rhythms from around the globe. For those expecting something along the lines of Stomp's live performances such as the ones showcased in Stomp Out Loud, prepare to be disappointed. But for those looking for a creative and fantastic journey of discovery, Pulse delivers in spades.

In addition to boasting one of the most astonishing opening sequences in the history of extreme-sports filmmaking, Billabong Odyssey offers a breathtaking survey of big-wave surfing at a pivotal stage in its evolution. With the advent of Jet-Ski Waverunners used for "tow-in" access to gigantic waves that paddle-surfers could never reach, this three-year, globe-trotting quest for the world's biggest waves is nothing less than spectacular. As documentaries go it's a bit cruder than 2003's other surfing movie, Step Into Liquid, and many of the same world-class surfers appear in both films (including 49-year-old Ken Bradshaw, still going strong). But Billabong is unrivaled in its abundance of jaw-dropping footage--most of it shot from helicopters hovering in close proximity--showing the sheer, terrifying scale of breaking "tubes"--some reaching 100 feet--at the most challenging big-wave locations on the planet, including Maverick's at Santa Cruz, California; Cortes Bank off the Pacific Coast; "Cyclops" in Australia; Mundaka, Spain; and the treacherous "Jaws" reef on the coast of Maui, Hawaii.
While touching on various hot topics such as safety training, serious wipe-outs, swell-tracking technology, female surfers (like the great Layne Beachley), and hydrofoil surfboards (billed as "the future of the sport"), director Philip Boston applies a casual, competitive structure that's too diffuse and lightweight to have much impact. But when the film focuses on the climactic "Jaws" showdown between Carlos Burle and Mike Parsons, Billabong Odyssey achieves a state of raw power and spiritual intensity, culminating in Parsons' best-ever 10-point ride on a massive tube that constantly threatens to consume him. As dozens of adrenaline-junkie surfers strive for new horizons of unprecedented skill, Billabong Odyssey chronicles their efforts with amazing bird's-eye cinematography. For surfers and non-surfers alike, this movie must be seen to be believed. --Jeff Shannon

Wow.......2007-05-13
I definitely enjoyed this movie for the shear terror you feel every time you see these madmen screaming across the waves with thousands of pounds of liquid ready to crush them at a moments notice. I also loved it for the fact that it showed all of these big named surfers getting together and going to most of the big name waves and just doing some awesome surfing.
Billabong Odyssey .......2007-03-16
Its an amazing film with wonderful places and powerful waves
What a wave!!!.......2007-02-06
Has by far the sickest ride at Jaws that I have ever seen (Parsons). Overall a great movie, but wtf is Laird. You can't talk about big waves without talking about Laird.
Billabong Odyssey wowzer.......2007-01-25
Well photographed, and in depth with the world of big wave surfing. The locations are amazing, and it really shows how dificult riding those monsters is. Their training is intense and crazy. These guys make the wave!
Fantastic Footage of Monster Tube Ride at jaws.......2006-11-12
The opening sequence is the best photo coverage of any wave anywhere.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderfully captivating! .......2007-05-25
Sister Wendy defines the art work of the many great masters in interesting details. Her explanations shed light on why they are the masters, instead of just artists with beautiful talents. The DVDs are like an Art Appreciation college course but with facts you'll enjoy remembering. This documentary/educational DVD is captivating!
She also has a funny way of discussing "explicit" details with such an innocence. Sister Wendy is a hoot!
A Wonderful Collection.......2007-05-17
I thoroughly enjoyed Sister Wendy's book. Also, if you like black-and-white engravings from the 19th century, check out "A Celebration of Humanism and Freethought." Although it contains many quotations from the Humanist perspective, it is full of wonderful rare engravings. It's an art book that has been overlooked because of it's title.
Both these book belong on art collectors shelves. Click here to see images: A Celebration of Humanism and Freethought
Great high school art history video.......2006-11-03
I teach in a Christian High School, so have to be careful with the videos I show for art history instruction. Sister Wendy is great. I enjoy her sense of humor - some of her comments are a riot! I always know when to watch for reactions on the faces of the students to see who is really watching and listening to the video. I show her videos to each of my three classes each week - and have been for 6 years (I just replaced my VHS with a DVD), and I still learn something each time I watch them! A half an hour a week of Sister Wendy is good for anyone's soul!!!
Speedy delivery.......2006-05-30
I ordered it by international standard airmail to Hong Kong and I received it in 6 days !! What a small small world !
DVD was well packaged and delivered in excellent brand new condition.
Great for beginners!.......2005-12-11
I use Sister Wendy in my Art History classes for unsophisticated students who tend to think comic books and video games are all that there is to fine art. They laugh uproariously at Sister Wendy herself, but not at the art she presents. I know it seems juvenile, but the truth is that art tends to intimidate people; some react by deriding it as a defence to their ignorance. Sister Wendy breaks the ice. She adds "sizzle" to attract the viewer with works that might normally be ignored. She allows the novice access to timeless beauty. She melts prejudice with humor and sincere admiration. In short, depite her rather unorthodox methods, Sister Wendy opens minds.

Customer Reviews:
A let down.......2007-07-09
I had high hopes for this. I never seen it before and was hoping for a great sci fi classic movie discovery to add to my collection but it was not to be. Very lame story line, totally lame effects with standard fish bowl fish...A real let down.
sinking to the Bottom Of The Sea.......2007-06-22
...has all the earmarks of a classic 'good bad' movie but just doesn't pull it of. Simply not bad enough to be funny, but is rather dull. Poor, old Walter Pidgeon and his sad little neckerchief, looking best to be sincere. Professional cocky sourpuss Ben Gazzara stars as well, along with sweaty Ernest Borgnine. Expect little and maybe be mildly amused.
"Undersea Odyssey" in Your Own Aquarium!!.......2007-05-24
This Canadian-made film had a huge ad campaign back in the day(1973) with a poster sporting more than was delivered. A seaquake sends a rather cheap-looking model "Oceanlab II" into an unknown abyss and only the high-tech "Neptune", piloted by Ben Gazzara can rescue(begrudgingly) any survivors. All-star cast, but sub(no pun!)par FX work that appears to have been shot in a large aquarium! The giant sea monsters are...gasp... sea bass, eels, sand sharks all filmed close-up and "giant" in very sandy bottomed aquariums with a toy-model of the Neptune occasionally buffeted about and attacked by them. One shot has some animatronic(for the time) sea monsters but they look incredibly badly done. At once point the sub gets caught in a "river of sand". Some bad continuity topside does not help the film(sunny from outside the ship, cloudy from inside). However, good performances salvage some of this and it's good for laughs and, 70's nostalgia. You know it's a "Sea" movie with Walter Pigeon and Ernest Borgnine in it!
I Remember It As Better.......2007-05-03
When I first saw this film as a kid in a theater, I remember it scared the hell out of me. As an adult, when I saw a vhs copy, I realized there wasn't much to be afraid of here, other than a reality check. Still, it is a favorite from my childhood, and I'm lucky enough as an adult to be able to slip back into that child long enough to ignore the bad miniatures, and magnified fish, and the anti-climactic ending. When this movie is compared to a classic like Fantastic Voyage, it can't hold a candle; but it is still a fun little adventure movie, with a very good cast. I'm looking forward to seeing it in it's widescreen format for the first time since it was in the theater.
NEPTUNE FACTOR- DVD.......2004-08-18
I loved this movie and would be wonderful in DVD. It was filmed in 2.35 and would be great to come out in widescreen.
Please vote for this movie. Thanks

With the 1957 release of Paths of Glory, Stanley Kubrick confirmed his early promise and joined the ranks of world-class filmmakers. The age of the auteur had arrived, and Kubrick was a prime candidate for inclusion in the pantheon of directors later canonized by critic Andrew Sarris in his influential book The American Cinema. Ironically, this was also the period during which Kubrick left his native soil for permanent residence in England, and from that point forward, the Kubrick mystique inflated to legendary proportions. But if Kubrick was no longer bringing himself to the world, he was certainly bringing the world to his films. From the comfort of his rural England estate and locations never far from London, Kubrick would command cinematic odysseys to isolated Colorado (in The Shining), battle-ravaged Vietnam (Full Metal Jacket), upscale New York City (Eyes Wide Shut), and, of course, Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite (in 2001: A Space Odyssey).
The New Stanley Kubrick Collection includes all eight of Kubrick's films from Lolita on--a quarter-century of brilliant, challenging cinema. This second edition adds Eyes Wide Shut to the previous collection and remastered sound on five of the films plus a new anamorphic edition of 2001. Purists have complained that Kubrick's last three films have been released in full-screen format only; this was in compliance with Kubrick's wishes, and the films do not suffer unduly from full-screen formatting. This set also features a new full-length documentary made by longtime Kubrick assistant Jan Harlan, Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures. The diversity of Kubrick's work is truly astonishing, even though the director's technical precision and steely perspective on humanity may strike uninitiated viewers as cold and even misanthropic. His films almost always received mixed (and sometimes scathingly negative) reviews upon their release, only to benefit from glowing reassessment as they grew entrenched in the public consciousness. Here, in all their glory, are the collected films of a genuine master, ripe for study and appreciation for many years to come. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:
Great Documentary.......2006-03-18
The documentary about Stanley Kubrick included in this collection ("Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures") makes it worth having. A truly great collection of movies, perfect for a Kubrick enthusiast looking to establish their DVD collection, or for people unsure about Kubrick to make them fans!
A box set featuring the films of the world's greatest director.......2005-07-03
The Stanley Kubrick Collection features 9 amazing DVD's, eight of them films. The films include Lolita, 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, the documentary Stanley Kubrick: A Life In Pictures and more.
First of all, the sound/picture quality is amazing. If improves vastly over the sound/picture quality over the original, now out-of-print Stanley Kubrick Collection from 1999.
Also, the films are brilliant, except the vastly overrated A Clockwork Orange. For my review on this film, visit A Clockwork Orange on amazon.com
Every Kubrick fan should own this item!
The master of his domain.......2005-07-03
"Genius is the fire that lights itself." That could very well describe the mystique of, and the body of work from, Stanley Kubrick, arguably one of the greatest filmakers of the 20th century. This collection represents 8 of his works, from 'Lolita' to 'Eyes wide Shut', released after his sudden death in March 1999. Although other directors have a larger number of films to their credit, it only took 13 directions to go in for Kubrick to cement his legacy in the annals of movie history. From my perspective, two flicks stand out to define his greatness: 'Spartacus' (not included in this collection) and '2001: a Space Odyssey'. To do something no one else has done before, and for everyone to pull from that influence since, is a testament to his courage and perfectionism. He is listed in the Guiness book Of World Records as the director who demanded an astonishing 600-plus takes for one scene in 'The Shining'. Needless to say, Shelley Duvall was not happy after that week of shooting in the cold. But the actors who were fortunate enough to work on one of his films became major stars because of their apearances, from James Earl Jones in 'Dr. Strangelove', to Malcolm McDowell in 'A Clockwork Orange', to R. Lee Ermey and Vincent D'Onofrio in 'Full Metal Jacket', and Lelee Sobieski in 'Eyes Wide Shut'. Kirk Douglas was so fond of his talent, he made sure he got to work with him three times.
This is an excellent overview of a master artisan. Purchasing this along with the Criterion Collection version of 'Spartacus' will give you viewing enjoyment that will last a lifetime. Also check out 'A.I.: Artifical Intelligence', a Steven Spielberg product that was based on a screenplay given to him by Kubrick from ideas written in the books by Isaac Asimov. It was the last script Kubrick never finished making a movie of.
Much better set.......2005-05-30
Includes a couple more films and Vivian's feature-length documentary Stanley Kubrick: A Life In Pictures. One look at this set may be as a cash generator (after all, WB already released a Kubrick collection), but second look is Kubrick's artifact, an in-depth, beautifully remastered, feature-packed set. At last, gone are the days of Kubrick rolling in his grave from the original clunker set. He can now rest in peace, as his films are now preserved at highest imaginable quality with immersive 5.1 surround. Bless you, Vivian.
2001 was the only film in the original set to get the 5.1 treatment. Now, four other films (Barry Lyndon, A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, and Full Metal Jacket) have been touched by the magic wand, and given a massive makeover, including-- you guessed it-- 5.1 surround. The features on the separate discs are essentially the same as the original set (we still get Vivian's Making of The Shining documentary, only with a restoration job done), but the real highlight is A Life In Pictures. After only seeing three of his films (2001, A Clockwork Orange, and Shining), I must agree that Kubrick is one of the greatest, if not the greatest, director(s) that ever lived.
Now WB has listened to the wailing Kubrick estate, and given his films the respect they deserve. Avoid the original clunker. Buy this one.
P.S. The films that are in fullscreen were shot that way, and the original aspect ratio is preserved according to Kubrick's wishes. So stop complaining about it!
Warner Brothers Cleans Up Its Act - Literally........2005-03-29
If you're reading this, chances are you've already seen many (if not all) of these movies and understand their significance in modern cinema. So, a review of the films themselves is fairly pointless. What I will discuss are the technical aspects of these DVDs as well as the bonus documentary "Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures." Like many of you, I bought some of the original Stanley Kubrick DVDs, and I can testify that they were shameful presentations of the director's work. "The Shining" had scratches, lines, and dirt all over the film. "A Clockwork Orange" looked woefully drab and washed out. But the worst offense was "Barry Lyndon." Not only did this picture suffer from print flaws, but the image, at one point, WOBBLED. Warner Brothers knew they had a turkey on their hands, so they discontinued these films and re-released them with digitally remastered picture and 5.1 sound. The improvements are noticeable, to say the least. The opening credits of "The Shining," which feature the steadicam roaming through the beautiful vistas of Colorado, is wonderfully crisp and clear. "Barry Lyndon," a visually stunning picture to begin with, is even more breathtaking with its sharp, rich colors. And "Full Metal Jacket," looks much better without the grain. Also, in place of the mono soundtrack that Kubrick allegedly preferred, we get remixed 5.1 audio ("Lolita" and "Dr. Strangelove," however, are still in mono). Simply put, Warners literally cleaned up its act by re-doing these films and presenting them the way they were meant to be shown. The fun doesn't stop there. Unlike the original Kubrick box set, this edition has a bonus documentary narrated by Tom Cruise: "Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures." This hugely entertaining film covers Kubrick's entire filmography, featuring interviews with crew members, friends, and cast including Malcolm McDowell, Jack Nicholson, Matthew Modine, Shelley Duvall, Nicole Kidman, Sidney Pollack, and Cruise himself. Woody Allen, Martin Scorcese, and Steven Speilberg also get to throw in their $.02. While they do praise Kubrick to high heaven, some predictably admit that he was very challenging to work with (he allegedly forced many of his actors to do dozens of takes while filming). Granted, this documentary doesn't exactly get us any closer to the director himself, but it does provide a fairly intimate and thorough look at his work. I've witnessed the price on this box set go down over the last couple years, so if you've been wanting to get your hands on it (and many movie buffs do), now is the time to do so.

Leon Theremin was the secret link between sci-fi films, the Beach Boys, and Carnegie Hall. His self-named electronic musical instrument--the first of its kind--took the world by storm in the 1920s and '30s. Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey, winner of Sundance's Filmmakers Trophy, explores the inventor's strange life and times, including his mysterious 50-year disappearance beginning in the 1940s. Interviews with theremin virtuoso Clara Rockmore, synthesizer pioneer Robert Moog, and Theremin's contemporaries, as well as clips from movies such as The Day the Earth Stood Still, featuring the unworldly sounds of his creation, show an eccentric genius working toward success until his sudden vanishing in the Soviet Union. Footage of Theremin at 94 years old, finally rediscovered and rewarded for his achievements, brings a celebratory ending to what could be a grim or at least uncertain story, but instead is a fascinating documentary. --Rob Lightner
Description
The stranger-than-fiction true story of the father of electronic music is captivatingly told in this highly acclaimed and endlessly surprising documentary (Leonard Maltin) that garnered the prestigious Filmmakers Trophy at the 1994 Sundance Film Festival. Set against the backdrop of the instrument's ethereal sound, Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey is nothing short of sensational! In the 1920s and 30s, Russian émigré Leonard Thereminthe inventor of the world's first electronic musical instrumenthad it all. His self-named theremins were in high demand from filmmakers and musicians around the globe; he was married to a beautiful American dancer; he lived among New York's socialelite. And then, in 1938, he mysteriously vanished, not to be seen again for over 50 years!
Customer Reviews:
Great DVD.......2007-06-27
Fantastic documentary, the only thing preventing me giving it 5 stars is the fact that it doesn't have English subtitles and it is sometimes difficult to understand what Theremin is saying with his thick Russian accent.
It's a documentary - give us the information!.......2007-05-14
OK, so I would have known this if I'd read the other reviews on this page - but I'll add my opinion anyway, just in case it helps someone else.
I bought this DVD to replace a domestic VHS copy of 'Theremin' I made from Channel 4 (UK) television some time in the 1990s. It was an excellent documentary (I thought) and wanted a permanent copy for my library. The thing is, the UK television version was excellently subtitled and captioned - as many people have observed, Prof. Theremin's English is pretty much incomprehensible, and there's at least once scene where he and Clara Rockmore converse in Russian (presumably) for several minutes.
I was surprised and disappointed to find that this DVD does not have the subtitles for these sections, or the captions to indicate who the (often obscure) people being interviewed actually are. In fact, there are no English subtitles of any kind to help you.
Why not? Was this the director's intention? If so, can I just say that I'm very irritated by documentary directors who - in their rush to pretend they're making a 'film' - feel it's uncool to give us hard facts, because it cramps their visual style etc. Come on! It's a documentary - it's meant to inform us. Give us the information we need to benefit fully from it!!
Needless to say, if this DVD doesn't represent the director's intention, and should have the captions/subtitling, then this is also a serious oversight.
Either way, an excellent and informative documentary has been turned into a confusing indulgence - and I'll still need to keep that VHS copy so I know what's going on. Absolutely maddening.
Jewel of Quirkiness.......2007-05-13
My interest in the theremin began when I wondered what instrument was used in those sounds for the movie, "The Day The Earth Stood Still". Off the beaten path it took me as I found Russian connections, Tesla references, and finally, with this DVD, witnessing the actual playing of this bizarre instrument. It's just fascinating.
If you are someone who loves to find true stories that are much, much stranger than fiction, get this DVD. Do it now.
And let me know if you have a good used theremin for sale.
An excellent musical documentary to own........2007-03-28
This is an amazing story in its own right, and a documentary worth preserving in your own collection. People interested in music history, both classical and popular, will cherish the live footage of Nicolas Slonimsky, Mr. Moog, and of course of Theremin himself, among other people. You will want to show this movie to your friends, and you are likely to want to see it again to refresh your memory of quite an era.
Nice history, unwarranted PG rating (thanks to Brian W.).......2007-01-28
I watched this DVD documentary with my daughter prior to building a Theremin kit. 99% of it was great - but I was very disappointed that a PG-rated DVD would leave in the F-word and other obscenities from Mr. Brian Wilson. If you are watching this around children, be careful with this section.

While flying under the ratings radar on Showtime, Odyssey 5 drew loyal fans with a premise that could have yielded fascinating developments beyond its 19-episode run. Before taking show-runner jobs on UPN's ill-fated Star Trek: Enterprise and Fox's 24, creator-writer-producer Manny Coto dreamed up this provocative pastiche of sci-fi ideas, connecting an end-of-the-world scenario with a time-travel twist and an alien invasion plot with X-Files overtones. You could argue that Coto's reach exceeded his grasp, since none of these elements combine to form a fully satisfying whole (especially since the series was cancelled before it reached its intended conclusion), but there's something to be said for the show's entertaining tangents and unexpected complications. It all begins when the five-member crew of the space shuttle Odyssey witnesses the shocking implosion of the Earth, leaving them stranded and doomed to suffocate when their air supply is depleted. Instead, they are rescued by the Seeker (John Neville), a crystalline alien in human form, who sends them (or at least, their mental and spiritual essence) five years back in time, reunited with their physical bodies with a mission to discover what went wrong and save Earth from oblivion.
Peter Weller stars as the brash, foul-mouthed Commander Chuck Taggart, a seasoned flyboy whose 22-year-old computer-whiz son Neil (Christopher Gorham) must now cope with being physically 17 again, reliving high-school (including his first serious relationship) while investigating possible causes of Earth's destruction. Along with geneticist Kurt Mendel (Sebastian Roché), shuttle pilot Angela Perry (Tamara Craig Thomas), and TV news reporter Sarah Forbes (Leslie Silva), their quest leads to the discovery of sentient nano-bots, synthetic humans, and a far-reaching conspiracy masterminded by a NASA splinter group secretly known as "the Cadre." In his pilot episode commentary recorded with Weller in 2005, Coto outlines some of the ideas he would've developed had the series run longer, and these 19 episodes serve up plenty of surprises that hint at the series' untapped potential. That makes Odyssey 5 both fun and frustrating--we're left dangling with an unresolved cliffhanger--but the ensemble cast makes it worthwhile. While the writing skews toward juvenile silliness on some occasions (and veers into full-on comedy with guest star Ted Raimi in the entertaining episode "The Trouble with Harry"), it's clear that Odyssey 5 was pushing conventional boundaries of TV science fiction. For that reason alone, it's a shame it lacked the audience that would've warranted additional episodes. --Jeff Shannon

Odyssey 5.......2007-05-26
Manny Coto is the man!! Not in a 70s sort of way, but because this series has excellent story lines, great science, and moving insight into human nature. Under the Stone Paw
outstanding .......2007-01-10
wish it was still on alot of loose ends they need to tie up
Frustrating. Avoid unless already hooked........2006-11-13
I have to agree with some other reviewers. I've seen the original series and I still have all of the episodes of the Showtime version recorded. When I saw this on the shelf as "The Complete Series", I naturally assumed that the discussion of a direct-to-DVD conclusion had finally gotten some results. Instead, it turns out that this should be called "The Incomplete Series". Of course, you have no way of knowing this if you buy it in a store.
There's no indication on the outer packaging of what episodes are included. No indication that it ends prematurely and no mention that the series was cancelled before the conclusion of the storyline.
This show was a single continuous storyline with numerous highly connected sub-plots. Pretty much all of them are left hanging. Unless you want to join a large community of frustrated fans who are unlikely to ever receive any sort of closure, I'd avoid buying the set. (no, there's absolutely no hint of what the conclusion was going to be in any of the commentary or extras, either :/ ) However, if you catch wind of a real conclusion (made-for-TV, direct-to-disc movie or even a simple paper copy of Manny Coto's story notes), rush out and buy this set and enjoy it first.
Yes, it's an outstanding dramatic Sci-fi series with top-notch writing, acting, direction and production. However, the more that you enjoy it, the more upset you'll be at being left hanging.
Ended WAY TOO SOON!.......2006-10-24
Pardon me for being late to the reviews.
In picking up this series at the Library, I was compelled when I saw at least six episodes of 'O5' past the pre-emptive shutdown that Showtime imposed on this well-done and ill-fated series. The last episode I recall them showing was 'Skin' and the death of Taggart's wife, Paige. Now I get the treat of seeing what happened past that only to be left with a cliff-hanger unresolved. I not only refreshed myself with the episodes I've seen, I've also seen what Showtime should have aired but -in their own self-interest- allowed to not ever be seen on their network.
That, in itself, says volumes about how Showtime likes to work and I'm certainly NOT impressed by it.
'Odyssey 5', in my mind, is only rivaled by the present 'Battlestar Galactica' for coherent plots, excellent acting and great twists of the storyline. This series engages the brain. You don't simply sit on the couch, you want to join in with the characters. I so wish that Showtime would've gotten their heads out of their nether regions to allow the series to have ran its full course.
However, they didn't. Thus we are left with what is and dreams of what might have been.
Yes, this series- short as it is- is worth the money to buy it in my book.
The Executives At Showtime Should Be Fired For Cowardice!.......2006-08-21
This is absolutley one of the best series I have ever seen in my 40 years of watching television! It's obvious why the executives at Showtime paniced: The show was way too subversive for a politically conservative medium like cable t.v.! The political and philosphical statements Odyssey 5 were literally making in each episode were just too much for the spineless creatures that rule the cable airwaves!
My favorite genre is science fiction & fantasy. I have seen the good, the bad, and the ugly over the years. Nothing, except for Star Trek, Farscape and Babylon 5 comes close to the genius and passion of Odyssey 5! I can think of few television series where I cared so much for each main character, or the extensive range of emotions felt. The series was like theater! There's no other way to describe it!
Had those responsible at Showtime kept Corporate at bay, instead of canceling the series literally in mid-sentence, the eventual controversey Odyssey 5 might have generated would've been good for business!
The only drawback the series had was the importance of watching each episode in sequence. But with all the recording technology now available, this minor obstacle would not have been very difficult to overcome!
The loss to science fiction was incalcuable by the obnoxious cancelation of this unique series. Perhaps, someone soon will have the courage to pick up the pieces and write a book, or make a movie, and finish the series with the same amount of passion and subversiveness as the creators of Odyssey 5 did! One can only hope!
