Under a thick carpet of green-dyed yak fur and wonderfully expressive Rick Baker makeup, Jim Carrey is up to all of his old tricks (and some nifty new ones) in this live-action movie of Dr. Seuss's holiday classic. He commands the title role with equal parts madness, mayhem, pathos, and improvisational genius, channeling Grinchness through his own screen persona so smoothly that fans of both Carrey and Dr. Seuss will be thoroughly satisfied. Adding to the fun is a perfectly pitched back-story sequence (accompanied by Anthony Hopkins's narration) that explains how the Grinch came to hate Christmas, with a heart "two sizes too small." Ron Howard proves a fine choice for the director's chair with a keen balance of comedy, sentiment, and light-hearted Seussian whimsy. Production designer Michael Corenblith gloriously realizes the wackiness of Whoville architecture, and his rendition of the Grinch's Mt. Crumpit lair is a marvel of cartoonish, subterranean grime. Then there's Cindy Lou Who (Taylor Momsen), the thoughtful imp who rallies her village to recapture the pure spirit of Christmas and melts the gift-stealing Grinch's cold, cold heart. You've even got a dog (the Grinch's good-natured mongrel, Max) who's been perfectly cast, so what's not to like about this dazzling yuletide movie? The production gets a bit overwhelmed by its own ambition, and the citizens of Whoville (including Jeffrey Tambor, Christine Baranski, Molly Shannon, and Bill Irwin) pale in comparison to Carrey's inspired lunacy, but who cares? If a movie can unleash Jim Carrey at his finest, revamp the Grinch story, and still pay tribute to the legacy of Dr. Seuss, you can bet it qualifies as rousing entertainment. Jim Carrey's Grinch.......2007-06-27
Who doesn't love this version? I'm not a big Jim Carrey fan, but this is a Christmas must-see for our family every year.
So Stupid, It's Funny.......2007-02-22
I love this movie! It is so incredibly stupid and funny. It is absolutely ridiculous and slightly crass. The grinch and the whos look like a bunch of clowns. The film was predictable and completely ripped off from the animated TV special. This isn't as stupid as Barney, because at least the makers of this film actually tried to be funny, rather than just childish and retarded. This film has gotten a lot of mixed reviews on amazon.com, so be sure to rent it before you buy it.
The Grinch with Jim Carey.......2007-01-18
I LOVE IT! It is one of the best Christmas movies out there. I watched it 3 times, this past Christmas, and could have watched it again. It is hilarious!!!
I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!!!.......2007-01-08
It never gets old! The deleted scenes are great. This is a fun movie for the whole family. We watch it every year, usually twice! Even if you aren't a Jim Carrey fan, you will be in this one.
Great holiday fun.......2006-12-26
I totally enjoyed the remake of the "The Grinch stole Christmas". It was alot of fun and the special effects were remarkable. I am not a Jim Carrey fan, but this one is absolutely fantastic!! It is alot different than the orginal cartoon story, and if I might say, it is alot better. A must see for holiday fun!!!!

For those who never thought Disney would release a film in which Santa Claus is kidnapped and tortured, well, here it is! The full title is Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, which should give you an idea of the tone of this stop-action animated musical/fantasy/horror/comedy. It is based on characters created by Burton, the former Disney animator best known as the director of Pee-wee's Big Adventure, Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, and the first two Batman movies. His benignly scary-funny sensibility dominates the story of Halloweentown resident Jack Skellington (voice by Danny Elfman, who also wrote the songs), who stumbles on a bizarre and fascinating alternative universe called ... Christmastown! Directed by Henry Selick (who later made the delightful James and the Giant Peach), this PG-rated picture has a reassuringly light touch. As Roger Ebert noted in his review, "some of the Halloween creatures might be a tad scary for smaller children, but this is the kind of movie older kids will eat up; it has the kind of offbeat, subversive energy that tells them wonderful things are likely to happen." --Jim Emerson
Customer Reviews:
Still blows me away.......2007-05-28
Burton's dark love story will still take your breath away. The Nightmare before Christmas has a cult following, and it's no suprise why. The story is a most incredible, and creative story, with great music.
Kids will love it, but adults even more. I think this movie is 100 years before it's time. It's something you could only expect from Burton and it will still leave you enamored.
We see only what we are trained to see.......2007-05-12
This is comment on the movie and not on the DVD product
Indeed this is treasure that can be viewed from many angles, and I leave the cinema forum discussion open..
My view on the excellent art: Jack- the maestro extraordinaire of Halloween- in his maximum competence level- has found no longer "zest" in his own creation and admiration of his Halloween peers- similar to a mid-life crisis - he undergoes a minor depression looking for that change of pace.
Wandering far and apart, the finds it by having a rare access to Christmas town- a community that same as holloweenland spend s all its time and energies in preparing for the date .. and now, comes the decoding part of the story, how does a Halloween character interpret x-mas? You guess it, a no brainer here.. X-mas has that Halloween taste.. Yet everyone is so excited nobody can notice it... now you can see how to use this movie for conflict issues... Jack also elevates to his maximum incompetence state (to put it into Dr. Peter's celebrated theory) by hijacking Santa in x-mas night... fortunately reality kicks back to reestablish balance and .. Well see it
I thought I did not need any explaining on how to use this movie for conflict issues, so let's begin with the simple things as I would with my teenage son
- Discovery of America by the Europeans- Columbus could not even accept the possibility of a new world, this was India and the natives sure looked like Indians., in turn, when they saw the horses, what could they think of such wonderful beast, what names can they be given?... Venezuela was named because the Spanish saw some villages made over the waters of a lake, and they related to Venice..
I could go on with Freud's theories of the psyche, etc but I am tired
GREAT DVD AND MOVIE ....BUT.......2007-03-31
This movie is a visual treat! Tim Burton can certainly come up with all the visual elements in a film, but he lacks in his story telling sometimes and the music in this film is mediocre at best. Please don't get me wrong, I love this movie, but it is not without it's flaws. The music is boring and drags sometimes unlike in "James and the Giant Peach" which the songs are very good. James is so much more entertaining on a story level too. Nightmare is a beautiful looking film and has great characters, it just doesn't quite live up to the cult status it has achieved.
No.......2007-03-20
This movie. My responce; huh? This may be the most creepy thing ever. I watched it, and I didn't really feel like I had just watched a movie. It felt like I had just been stupified in front of a whole lot of people. Was I supposed to get that? I was thinking about watching it with my daughter, but I'm glad I decided not to. She is still a young girl of and ACADEMIC (hint, hint) mind set. I will always be happy to watch a movie with her, but not one that is this stupid.
are you kidding...me?.......2007-02-26
you could serve this movie headless and on a silver platter,
and I will still give it a five.
in fact, it would probably be even funnier that way.
DVDs are huge though; they could have included language tracks from Japanese while they were at it.
ever heard Jack sing 'What's This?' in Japanese? Hilarious.

Description
Albert Brooks' Mother meets Raimi's Evil Dead II. When Ed's mother dies and "Happy People, Ltd." contact him and claim to resurrect the dearly departed for only $1000, Ed doesn't have to think long before agreeing. Ed is overjoyed at his mother's return until he starts noticing her doing things that ordinary senior citizens just don't do! Soon Ed's life is turned upside down in this hilarious dark comedy.
Customer Reviews:
An early Buscemi movie. And one of his best........2006-08-20
I saw Steve Buscemi at a party last year, and told him that "Ed and His Dead Mother" was one of my all-time favorite comedies. I said I was surprised that it didn't take off. He said, "Some films just don't make it." Attribute that more to the marketing than the nature of the film or its provacative title. Watch it a couple of times. A little dark comedy is good for the soul.
So very, very... something........2006-02-07
Ed and His Dead Mother (Jonathan Wacks, 1993)
Jonathan Wacks knows funny. Any guy whose name is listed as a producer for Repo Man, one can safely assume, knows funny. And while you have to have a particular sense of humor to really find this film amusing, you had to for Repo Man as well.
Ed Chilton (Reservoir Dogs' Steve Buscemi in an early role) is the owner of a hardware store left him by his mother, Mabel (Miriam Margolyes), who died a year before. He now lives with her brother, Benny (Ned Beatty), and his social interaction is restricted to Benny, who prefers spending his time watching Storm Reynolds, the curvaceous new neighbor (Hercules: The Legendary Journeys' Sam Jenkins, who went on to marry Kevin Sorbo), through a telescope, and Big Lar (Dead Man's Gary Farmer), seemingly the hardware store's only regular employee. Until, that is, Mr. Abner (Blood Work's Roberty Harvey), a salesman from the Happy People Corporation, shows up and proposes to Ed that perhaps he'd be happier were his mother home from the grave.
As with Repo Man, Ed and His Dead Mother is not knock-down drag-out comedy-- it's mostly ninety minutes of "WTF?" with a couple of really, really funny lines thrown in for good measure. In the hands of most folks, this would not work. Wacks, however, plays it for all it's worth, aided by a stellar cast (Beatty, especially, is in career form) and a cracking script. The only thing one can put in the minus column for this one is that it was Wacks' first feature as a director, and there are some first-time director mistakes (pacing, mostly). However, it wouldn't be too hard to see this becoming as a big a cult film as Repo Man now that it's gotten a decent DVD release. *** ½
Night of the Living Dead Overly Protective Mother.......2005-08-18
Not a bad flick, Ed and His Dead Mother is a bit too fey to be great, but it's fun to watch anyway. Steve Buscemi is the title character (Ed, not his mother), someone whose emotions are very clearly mixed up as he struggles to reach maturity. He's the manager of a hardware store whose mother and father have both passed on. And he's definitely attached to his mother.
Steve is very good but not great in this role. The casting is a smidgen off. The script is, as well, good but not great. Some of the scenes are right on the money; some are weaker than they should be. Ed's approached by John Glover--the best cast role in the film; Glover is perfect here--who's a salesman for Happy People, a firm that brings dead people back to life. He promises Ed to bring his mother back for only a thousand bucks and Ed agrees.
One of the best scenes occurs soon after she returns from the grave when Uncle Benny--Ned Beatty in a role that, again, is just a bit off in its casting (he's good but not great)--points out to Ed that his mother is inside an appliance. (don't worry; not giving anything away here). There are a number of black comedy moments like this which work, but there are a number that don't work either. Or at least, not quite.
Miriam Margolyes is, as well, good but not great in the role of Mother. If there is any problem, it's the script which is not consistently strong. The ideas are there and sometimes well executed, but almost as often, don't quite make it. Leaving the fantasy element aside, can we actually believe that a really hot babe would fall for Ed? I don't think so.
This is really not a bad flick at all. It's just not as good as it could and should have been.
Buscemi is great in the lead role.......2004-07-13
I rented this movie thinking it would be a bad movie, but because of the great Steve Buscemi i went for it, and it wasnt that bad at all. The premise is silly and some comedy aspects of the film dont necessarily work, but Buscemi and Ned beatty are really good in their respective roles. If your a steve buscemi fan, dont miss this one.
Forgotten Gem.......2003-12-14
After recently viewing the stellar "Trees Lounge," a film written, directed, and starring veteran character actor Steve Buscemi, my mind conjured forth dim recollections of the classic 1993 film "Ed and His Dead Mother." I say classic here because this movie, starring Steve Buscemi, should easily fall into that category. That people do not consider this film a must see production is a shame of epic proportions. Its obscurity is sort of a mystery to me, since I first saw the film when it received a wide showing on cable television back in the early to mid 1990s. I know if I saw it and remembered it, masses of other people must have had a similar experience, but apparently not if the dearth of reviews here is any indication. Viewers who adore the blackest of comedies really ought to give this one a shot because few films attain this level of laugh out loud hilarity while making you feel terrible for finding such material amusing. Even if you aren't a fan of black comedy, you should still watch "Ed and His Dead Mother" for the stand out performances from Buscemi, Ned Beatty, John Glover, and Miriam Margolyes.
Ed Chilton (Steve Buscemi) has a bit of a problem. He's a huge momma's boy whose mother recently passed on. Since Ed's father died years ago, this calamity means Ed got his mother's house, the family hardware store, and a huge check from the insurance company. The only real family Chilton has left is his Uncle Benny (Ned Beatty), an aging miscreant who likes to scan neighborhood windows with a telescope. The days pass slowly without his mother around, but Ed copes as best he can down at the hardware store where he occasionally encounters the local preacher looking for a bear trap big enough so he can catch his wife cheating on him (!). A weird town filled with strange people gets stranger still when A.J. Pattle (John Glover), crack salesman for Happy People, Ltd, arrives in town with an offer Ed Chilton would be hard pressed to pass up. For a measly one thousand dollars, Pattle promises to raise Ed's mother from her resting place. Moreover, the verbose salesman assures Ed that anyone who contracts with Happy People is sure to find full satisfaction with this seemingly shocking procedure. Heck, Pattle's company has resurrected some important people over the years, as evidenced by the pictures of such well known customers as Nancy Reagan seen hanging on the walls at the company headquarters. Ed quickly folds under the relentless assault of Pattle's pitch and coughs up a check. After the two haggle over a few pesky problems (Ed's mother did not receive the best attention from the undertaker), it isn't any time before mom shows up at the house just like she's never been away.
Sounds great, doesn't it? Well, Ed soon faces a whole host of unforeseen problems. A sexy number, named Storm of all things, moves in across the street and soon fixes her eyes on our hapless hero. Uncle Benny is less than happy about the reemergence of mom, too, since he can no longer live the type of life he finally achieved with the death of his overbearing sister. Moreover, a former store employee sent away for stealing by Chilton's mum just got out of prison and decides to seek revenge against the family. To top it all off, the reanimation procedure requires Mother Chilton to eat a daily allotment of huge roaches to stay alive. When she doesn't follow her dietary regimen to a T, weird things start to happen in the Chilton household. Mom might bake hundreds of pies in a few hours, or chase pets with power tools through the neighborhood streets, or dress in provocative clothing and prance about on her bed. She might even go after human beings with riding lawn mowers. Recently reanimated mothers with access to a hardware store spell trouble. Ed ultimately must make difficult decisions about his mom, but they are choices that hold the key to letting go and moving on with life. Maybe.
It is the performances that really make "Ed and His Dead Mother" such a hilarious romp through the realms of black comedy. Ned Beatty deserves some sort of award for his turn as the side splittingly funny Uncle Benny. The star of "Deliverance" plays his role here with stone faced deliberateness, with most of the funniest lines in the entire movie coming right from his character's mouth. I will never forget his response to Ed's inquiry as to the whereabouts of mother one morning after her return to the house: "Your mother is in the refrigerator," delivered with perfect comic timing. Buscemi and Margolyes are always good no matter what the role and both do an excellent job here. John Glover is perfectly cast as the slick A.J. Pattle, a man willing to seal the deal no matter what it takes. You almost need to rewatch the film in order to catch everything his character says because he says it so fast and so smoothly, just as a door-to-door salesman should.
"Ed and His Dead Mother," despite its black humor, is really a film about dealing with loss, and how a person must learn to cope with that loss and live their own lives to the fullest. It is great to see this get a DVD release, with a great picture transfer and plenty of extras. A commentary from director Jonathan Wacks graces this disc, along with a trailer and alternate beginning and ending sequences. A cult classic that never became cult or classic, "Ed and His Dead Mother" is required viewing for fans of twisted black comedy.

UNIMPRESSIVE !! - LACKING EXTRAS.......2006-11-23
Let me start with the good or at least the acceptable. The picture and sound quality are what you've come to expect from a mid-level HD-DVD catalog title. Picture quality isn't "stunning" like some other releases, but it is obviously a hi-def dvd. The sound quality is average. The DTS soundtrack is only available on the regular dvd side. The bad comes when you expect to see the same extras that were included in the original "collector's edition". Gone are the bloopers, deleted scenes, videos & documentaries, in fact the only real extra is a directors commentary with Ron Howard. In a word PATHETIC !! Universal seems to be trying to become the new FOX, expensive products with no value added features, my advice.....save up for the double dip.
