Description
The telephone, which revolutionized communication, was invented only a little over a century ago. Now, tools of communication surround us, and we cannot imagine living without them. Our radios and television sets bring us news and images from even the most remote corners of the globe. With a click of a button, we can instantly send written e-mail messages to friends in Europe, South America, Asia, or Africa. In moments, we can access newspapers from every part of the world on our computer screens. Consider the basics of communication and appreciate how rapid communication has changed the world in which we live.

Frequency is really two different--though inextricably linked--movies. First, the emotional drama of a father and son reunited after 30 years of separation. Then there's a science fiction thriller, in which a couple of chance solar storms, occurring exactly 30 years apart, can provide the agency through which the father and son can communicate using the very same ham radio in parallel time frames of 1969 and 1999. The son is John Sullivan (Jim Caviezel), a cop, and his father is Frank (Dennis Quaid), a firefighter who died on the job when John was 6, which just happens to be tomorrow for Frank when he and his now-adult son begin talking across time. This is great for John, because now he can warn his dad about the upcoming fire and avert the catastrophe that left him fatherless for most of his life. Accomplishing this gives John new memories of his life with Dad, but unfortunately alters the course of a serial killer, with tragic effect on John's family history. Since John's a cop, and the case he's working on turns out to be the same unsolved case from 30 years before, he and his father work together over the ham radio to solve the case and hopefully avert the tragedy that befell their family.

Time-travel stories have always been problematic, demanding either an extra degree of credulity on the part of the audience or an extra level of explanation on the part of storytellers, which is invariably cumbersome. Frequency handles the troublesome time paradoxes by having John explain how, having altered his past, he now experiences both timelines, as if he's had two pasts that converge in his present. And as changes continue to be wrought in John's past, we see him becoming more and more confused. No doubt the audience can sympathize, at least those of us who try to follow the ramifications of the rapidly accruing time fractures. Luckily, the bond between father and son is so strongly realized in the deeply felt performances of both Caviezel and Quaid that you don't even need to consider the science fiction elements in order to enjoy the film. But if you can suspend your disbelief long enough to allow for the possibility of time shifts, you'll have a far richer experience. --Jim Gay

5 out of 5 stars A Rare Gem.......2007-07-03

One of those "new idea" movies, in-which you have not seen the concept before. Part Sci-fi, mostly mystery, great entertainment. Keeps you on the edge of your seat with suspense. You root for the relationships between the characters! It is very heartwarming, should bring a few tears to your eyes!

5 out of 5 stars Making it Right.......2007-06-18

Frequency is a remarkable movie. I just discovered it and am glad to see that others continue to add their comments here. First, I must applaud the premise - the use of a ham radio as the device that connects father and son in a supernatural way. My uncle was a ham radio operator and even taught classes. It had a tremendous mystique all its own.

Dennis Quaid is fabulous. He effortlessly portrays Frank Sullivan, a man who is passionate about his values, devoted to his family, and larger than life as a fireman. The movie opens to this father's heroic rescue of a pair of workers trapped underground after a tanker crash. He comes right home to the wife he loves, the son he loves -- John, his "Little Chief" -- in the home he loves; he has it all. Moving forward thirty years, we meet the adult John. James Caviezel tears me to pieces in these early scenes as we learn that this father died in a fire 30 years ago. John is a cop working homicide. He is still living in the house he grew up in. He did not completely recover from his father's death. He drinks to find numbness and his girlfriend (who he loves) walks out on him. But he is a good man in his own right. His mother's phone number is on his speed-dial and he takes the time to stay involved in her life. On this difficult night in October 1999, as he approaches the anniversary of his father's death, his childhood friend Gordo (Noah Emmerich - The Truman Show) helps set up his father's old ham radio that they find looking for fishing gear under the stairs. Later, with the aurora borealis glistening overhead, father and son make contact on this radio over the distance of 30 years. Awesome! My favorite scene on the DVD is captioned "Catching Up," and takes place after a skeptical Frank, up to his ears in smoke and flames, follows his son's frantic warning that he should "go the other way" to safety rather than the death that John remembered. On returning home unscathed, Frank, accidentally wakes his six-year old son, evolving into a joyous bike-riding lesson. He then finds adult John's voice on the ham and they catch up. At one point, Frank asks adult John if he is still his "Little Chief" and James Caviezel's tearful reply "I'm trying to be" is profound. Dennis Quaid and James Caviezel run with their roles here. They are two great American actors at work.

The entire cast is wonderful. Elizabeth Mitchell as wife and mother plays so much love and strength into her role. The screenplay, by Toby Emmerich, brother of Noah, is tight, tender and imaginative. (The brothers do a great commentary together on the DVD special features.) The crime-thriller sub-plot is gripping and the ending satisfying.

5 out of 5 stars Let's rewrite H.G. Wells.......2007-06-16

A thriller that associates many interesting elements. First a serial killer, running after him, trying to stop him, in the radical way of today, a good self-defense shot. Then a fireman (yes not very politically correct: firefighter it should have been, but in 1969...) father and heroism, and dying on duty. Then a nurse mother, which is rather banal but explains the overworking schedule of the mother and the over-protective attitude. Then a time warp that happens in a strange way, through an old radio from the time before transistors and computers, with beautiful lamps and diodes. The orphaned son of the fireman father in 1999 gets in contact through this radio with his father in 1969 or about and they try to stop the killer. After discovering he is a cop. And it works, and the past is changed, and the future of that past is changed, hence the past future is no longer what it could have been or should have been and is what we would have liked it to be. Father, son et grand son. Grandfather, father and son. Three generations instead of two and the orphaned son of the second generation no longer being unable to cope with starting the third generation. Typically American: the desire to change the past, the only thing you cannot change. The future? Maybe if you try hard, and yet without any guarantee. But the past, no way, no hope, and yet there is always an American somewhere who is trying and believing Auschwitz can disappear in thin air. But the most difficult part of the film is the constant shifting from one time to another without being very clear all the time where we stand or are. Except that we get confused after a while.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding movie. Thank you Amazon........2007-06-14

Though FREQUENCY is a bit old but has a brilliant story. Everything is perfect. I searched for the complete DVD in our local shops (in Sri Lanka) but couldn't find. You know, most of the movies are copies and they don't have the complete stuff (making the movie, discussions, deleted scenes, etc.).
About the service of Amazon, I should say THANK YOU. When I put my order it said that the item should arrive between June 14, 2007 - July 25, 2007 and I got it yesterday (June 13). Simply brilliant. This is my second order with Amazon and I will definitely continue.

5 out of 5 stars Frequency.......2007-05-12

Frequency is a totally different story-line than the usual fair and
a much overlooked fantastic movie. It certainly never received the
attention it should have. It is a movie you'll never forget and
definately want to own. If it seems slow at the beginning, stay
with it -- it gets really dramatic and when you figure out what is
going on, you'll be intriqued. Great Movie!

3 out of 5 stars Ok...as they get older..........2007-06-20

My daughter loved another Baby Einstein as an infant. We got her this one at about 1 year. She did not start watching it until about 18 months, as far as it holding her attention. Now, at 20 months, she loves it and says most all of the words.

1 out of 5 stars BUYER BEWARE.......2007-06-16

My son has been watching the Baby Einstein video series since birth and at the age of two and a half, he is speech delayed and is actively in speech therapy. I think there is a correlation between the Baby Einstein videos and speech delay and sensory development. My son is intelligent, but is not expressive in speech. He understands but cannot express himself with words. The speech therapy is working but we will be in therapy until he is at the level he should be for his age. I also think there is a issue with sensory development. He is my second son and I never had issues with my first son who is now nine and back then Baby Einstein videos were not around. He watched Barney, Sesame Street, and other cartoons that used actual words and communicate dialog between two or more people and not so much sensory fluff. Take caution because I read one review that talked about autism and speech delay being an epidemic in the last five years. I think research needs to be conducted about the effects of Baby Einstein videos on baby and toddler development. If anyone else recognizes this problem or would like to write back, please email me directly at falina@sbcglobal.net

I use this in my daycare too and all my children are well beyond their age appropriate learning capacity. Any B.E. video is well worth it!

So, they let both Rex Harrison and Anthony Newley sing. This 1968 family musical is classier than the 1998 Eddie Murphy remake, with all of its scatological humor. This won a couple of Oscars (Best Song, Best Effects) and was nominated for seven more, including Best Picture. At the time of release, however, this was a box-office dud. Based (in part) on the magical Hugh Lofting book, it begins in Puddleby-by-the-Marsh, England, from which the world-renowned veterinarian Dolittle (Harrison) begins his quest for a giant pink sea snail. Children should find this enjoyable for its exotic creatures, such as the Pushme-Pullyou. Most adults may not agree as readily, although some of us consider this a guilty pleasure. --Rochelle O'Gorman

5 out of 5 stars if i could talk to the animals! .......2007-05-21

this movie was one of my favorite movies when i was growing up, its much better than the newest dr doolittle. this is a great childrens movie! i love it.

1 out of 5 stars not happy.......2007-03-14

I have recieved the dvd and couldnt play it as it was on a usa tracking system so it cannt be played in great britain i think it would be worth mentioning this when selling these kind of products. I also didnt receive a return mailing address or i would have returned it

4 out of 5 stars Too many songs........2007-03-03

The film will be good for kids. too many songs for my liking. i had to keep forwarding the songs. do not expect much spectacular special effects. acting of rex harrison was the only thing that will stand out.

2 out of 5 stars Lost story........2007-01-21

I had forgotten how boring Rex Harrison was. It didn't take long to remember why I didn't remember much about this movie. Harrison's performance demonstrates how muddled and off key the "songs" are and the miscasting of the actors. This is a movie for the under 6 year olds. The remake with Eddie Murphy is so much better being a comedy and no musical numbers.

5 out of 5 stars It's Still Great!.......2007-01-19

After searching many different places, I finally found the original "Dr. Dolittle" here at Amazon. I was very pleased with the quick service and the DVD arrived in perfect shape. The quality of the movie was superb and my grandchildren and I all loved watching it.

Patty Duke and Anne Bancroft had been playing their respective roles as Helen Keller and her teacher, Annie Sullivan, on Broadway for some time before director Arthur Penn (The Left-Handed Gun) built a mesmerizingly beautiful film around their layers-deep performances. Duke is astonishing as the deaf, blind, mute Keller, who awakens to an awareness of language under Sullivan's determined guidance. Bancroft is fascinating and focused. Penn wisely kept his adaptation unencumbered by cinematic indulgence. The black-and-white film is sparse and charged with the immediacy of the drama. The script is by William Gibson, who also wrote the original play. --Tom Keogh

ThenAnnie Sullivan, a 20-year-old teacher from Boston, arrives. Having just recently regained her own sight, the no-nonsense Annie reaches out to Helen through the power of touchthe only tool they have in commonand leads her bold pupil on a miraculous journey from fear and isolation to happiness and light. *1962: Actress (Bancroft); Supporting Actress (Duke)

3 out of 5 stars The picture fooled me........2007-06-27

I guess I was expecting a colorized version of the movie because of the picture displayed. I guess I'll pay attention next time, however the movie is the one I wanted.

4 out of 5 stars A Must-See for EVERYONE!.......2007-05-23

And that's no exaggeration. The Miracle Worker has everything you could possibly want in a movie and more. The powerful ending scene is as beautiful as it is gut-wrenching; poignant doesn't even begin to describe it.

As for the extras, there's really only one worth mentioning, and that is the original theatrical trailer. I enjoyed watching it because it gives you a glimpse into the past and shows you that although movie trailers were originally quite simple, they gave the audience so much and made them want to run out and see it.

Watch this movie with your family and I'm sure you will all cherish it for years to come.

HOMELESS IN AMERICA: Twenty-One Songs of Social Conscience for the 21st Century

4 out of 5 stars Dated but still a terrific landmark .......2007-04-01

From its earliest version as an orginal live-tv Playhouse-90 drama (gone are the days when tv could give us quality like this. We're stuck with 2nd-rate sex farce and toilet jokes), to the hit play, to the hit movie, this film displays almost every overdone effort made by Hollywood, starting in the late 50's, to mimick European "New Wave" techniques. It's to Bancroft's and Duke's credit that the production doesn't descend into total hysteria from beginning to end. The Playhouse 90 original, which I recall seeing as a teen myself, was somewhat more subdued and, IMHO, more powerful and effective in the final scenes. That said, this is still a remarkable piece of cinema -- despite the fact that there's not a single accurate ethnic speech coloration in the whole movie, and it has some of the laughably worst attempts at Southern accents I've heard since Gone With the Wind and the Tammy movies. It's incredible to think that the movie's imbecilic producers didn't want to import Duke or Bancroft from Broadway to recreate two of the most memorable dramatic roles of the 20th century. The excellent b&w print now seen on DVD is largely the work of Cuban director / photographer Ernesto Caparros who had been involved in cinema since the 1930's. Not only will tv never again give us work like this, but I can imagine how many car chases and napalm bombs Hollywood would have shoved into the script if "Worker" were produced today. Thanks to Amazon for including this very good DVD in their free-shipping list. Younger viewers who know Duke only from cable replays of her vapid tv sitcom will probably sit with mouths dropped and eyes popped open when they see how tv utterly wasted the supurb talent Patty displays in this movie.

Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze are the passionate lovers whose romance is undone when the latter is murdered during a bungled hit arranged by a rival. The clever concept by screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin (director of My Life) extends outward into comedy (Swayze's character communicates through a sassy medium played by Whoopi Goldberg, who won an Oscar for this role), horror (the afterlife is populated by hell-bound demons and the like), and romantic complications (a handsome suitor, played by Tony Goldwyn, comes on to Moore while Swayze's spirit is still hanging around). Directed by Jerry Zucker, previously best known for codirecting Airplane! and similar broad comedies, Ghost is a careful balancing act of strong commercial elements, but at heart it is a timeless Hollywood tearjerker that easily gets under one's skin. --Tom Keogh

Description

Patrick Swayze plays a ghost who teams with a psychic (Whoopi Goldberg) to uncover the truth behind his murder - and to rescue his sweetheart (Demi Moore) from a similar fate. "The word of mouth is that Ghost is a must-see romance," says Entertainment Weekly. Ditto to that!

5 out of 5 stars Low Expectations, Great Impressions.......2007-02-21

I'm not sure why I never watched "Ghost" before until last night. For some reason, I didn't pay much heed to it when it was first released and never thought it was worth watching on TV. I'm glad I gave it a chance because this is a GOOD movie. What makes it good is its' skillful mixture of suspense, romance, comedy, and the supernatural. That would seem to be too much to tackle for one movie but we get it all in the right balance. I was drawn rather quickly into the movie and got to where I couldn't wait to see what was coming next. There were a few "convenient" capabilities that these ghosts had that were necessary for the story to work. I'm a rather pragmatic person but, by the time these things came up, I was so caught up in the story that I WANTED these things to be possible.

Obviously, the writer and director deserve accolades for their work and the actors do as well. I wanted to make note of the quality of acting because it was probably the cast that left me uninterested in watching "Ghost". I was prepared to be unimpressed in particular with Whoopie Goldberg so I want to confess that I thought her Best Supporting Actress Oscar was well-deserved. I figure that I was one of the last persons in America to see "Ghost" but if there are others of you out there who still haven't seen it, give it a look; it's well worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Funny, Suspenseful, and Soooo Romantic.......2007-02-19

This definitely goes on my list of all-time-favorites. Demi Moore is beautiful as the grieving girlfriend, while Patrick Swayze projects the appropriate anger, sex appeal, and bafflement as the dead boyfriend, now a ghost. He badgers Whoopi Goldberg into helping him communicate with Demi.
Whoopi is funny! The scenes between the two lovers (before and after death) are quite touching and romantic. The action is dramatic and suspenseful as Swayze realizes who had him killed and that Moore is now in danger.
Great Movie!

5 out of 5 stars Living with a lost loved one!.......2007-01-31

I thought this was a great love story, that I would love to have happen to me if I lost a love the way she did, don't get me wrong I would be so afraid a first, but I would adjust and be glad to have him back in any way that I can.

3 out of 5 stars The 3 Stars Is Because I Am Extremely Skeptical About This Disc.......2006-12-26

I know it's a few months away (till this disc is released), but I have a lot of questions and skeptical thoughts surrounding this release. Didn't they already release this DVD a few years ago? What more could they add that the previous release didn't already have? Do they really think people are going to repurchase this film on DVD just for a couple of featurettes? For me, there better be a commentary by the actors (not the director & screenwriter...they already had their commentary). I'd like to hear Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, & Whoopi Goldberg sitting down watching this film and talking about the experience. I'd also like to see some deleted scenes and outtakes. I can't imagine the film was made without a couple of scenes excised (for pacing or otherwise). I'd also like to see some archival footage of awards shows (Golden Globes & Oscars...particularly Whoopi's acceptance speech and Bruce Joel Rubin's speech for Best Original Screenplay). Last but not least I'd also like to see every bad review written (and spoken) about this film compared with every good review (written & spoken) and see who was totally right and totally wrong (Eh hem...Siskel & Ebert...well, Ebert... Siskel's dead...can't fault him much...not posthumously anyway). Those would be reason to buy this film again on DVD. Not a couple of retrospective featurettes (most likely carried over from the previous release) and a commentary track from the director & screenwriter (also carried over from the previous release). That is not worth anyone's money or time. Paramount...are you listening? If you're not doing something along the lines of what I just described then scrap this project! It's the right thing to do!

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Movies of All Time.......2006-12-03

This movie has a little everything that will appeal to just about everyone. There's plenty of comedy, lots of romance, a bit of action and suspense and a more or less happy, tear-jerker ending. Not to mention the beauty of a young Demi Moore. And as a plus, the paranormal aspect gets plausible treatment. If you haven't seen this, I say you 'must'. Go out and buy it to watch over and over.

Anyone familiar with writer/director James L. Brooks (Broadcast News, As Good As It Gets) knows the man has a real feel for interesting women and a disarming way with a one-liner. The main women in Spanglish are Deborah Clasky (Téa Leoni), a moneyed SoCal mom, and non-English speaking Flor Moreno (Paz Vega), the beautiful Latina whom Deborah hires as a housekeeper. The one-liners, some of them amusing, are everywhere. Brooks provides an intriguing set-up for the two women to butt heads--Deborah's pudgy daughter Bernice (Sarah Steele) needs the affection at which Flor excels, while Flor's clever, bi-lingual daughter Cristina (Shelbie Bruce) is enamored of the financial advantages Deborah can provide--then proceeds to make Deborah so hatefully ignorant you can't imagine why her neuroses are the main thrust of the film. And Deborah's celebrated chef husband John (Adam Sandler, way over his head) is such a perfect parent he doesn't seem human--what happened to the Brooks who had Terms of Endearment mom Debra Winger turn to her scowling little boy and grunt "Don't make me hit you in the street"? Cloris Leachman has a nifty supporting role as Deborah's boozy, ex-jazz singer mother, but it's only one offbeat chord in an earnest film that hits all the wrong notes. --Steve Wiecking

Description

John Clasky (Adam Sandler) is a devoted dad whose skills as a chef have afforded his family (T=E9a Leoni, Cloris Leachman) a very upscale life, including a summer home in Malibu and a breathtaking new housekeeper, Flor (Paz Vega), who has recently immigrated to L.A. from Mexico, and is trying to find a better life for her remarkable daughter, Cristina (Shelbie Bruce), who is rapidly embracing the American way of life. When Flor and Cristina move in with the Claskys for the summer, Flor has to fight for her daughter's soul as she discovers that life in a new country is perilous...especially when you're being embraced by an affluent, eccentric American family.

1 out of 5 stars very bad.......2007-06-09

I want 2hrs of my life back. From now on I will wade through the fan-club reviews to read the more accurate reviews to weed out crappy movies.

2 out of 5 stars Pretty bad.......2007-05-16

I purchased this on someone's advice - to see Cloris Leachman. Turns out she had a very small part. This is a movie strictly for Adam Sandler's diehard fans. Even he's not at his best here. The writing was one cliche after another. Bored, I found myself wondering how much exercise Tea Leoni has to do to get that body.

4 out of 5 stars sandler gets serious.......2007-01-25

Adam Sandler in a serious role? Yes, after a fashion. As the most famous chef in America, husband, and father, he plays John Clasky, and is married to Deborah, a suburban housewife who raises the bar for what it means to be a type-A control freak. When we meet her mother Evelyn we understand why. This Los Angeles family is very wealthy and profoundly dysfunctional. Enter Flor, a Mexican housekeeper who has a teenage daughter Cristina who is the same age as the Clasky's daughter Bernice. Since her mom does not speak English, Cristina narrates the film for us. You can imagine the sub-plots of this "blended" family, but in the end Flor is a source of humanity, warmth, and normalcy for everyone.

1 out of 5 stars I'll never forgive my girlfriend..........2007-01-24

...for dragging me to this estrogen-drowned disaster of a movie. Truly, this is one of the top three worst films I've ever seen. I am convinced that Adam Sandler must have been blackmailed somehow for him to appear in this dreck.

Begin with the oh-so-heartwrenching story of a single mother forced to flee her native land in search of a better future for her daughter. Of course, the daughter will end up attending Princeton and her entrance essay is the premise of the storytelling in this movie. Shaking your head in bewilderment? It gets worse.

The dysfunctional family that the mother finds work with is possessed of a shrew of a father (the soft, unimposing and backbone-free Sandler) who is dominated by his overacting, speed freak-like, obsessive wife (Leoni), and round it out with a live-in, late-stage alcoholic mother-in-law (who of course, acts as a moral compass thanks to the wisdom gained by decades of squandering her life in a booze-soaked haze. Please!) and a few damaged, utterly unbelievable caricatures of kids. Viola, enough ammo for "drama" to make any menopausal woman salivate in anticipation of the impending deluge of emotional excess that comes with such movies.

The problem is, there is not one scene in the movie where the characters earn your empathy. If there was ever a point where the viewer was meant to wonder what was going to happen next, or what course of action a character might take, I missed it. I believe it would be impossible to find a point in the movie that was not spelled out and spoon-fed to the viewer in the most plain and predictable terms.

Another problem I have with this picture is the off-target promotion it received. It is not a comedy. I don't know what it is in terms of genre. Suicide-accelerant maybe? Since there are so many who love this movie, I'm sure that my review won't stop you if you want to see it. However, if your wife/girlfriend suggests you watch this movie, I urge you to spare yourself the agony you are sure to endure if you sit through this one. Amazon should implement an option for rating zero stars, just for movies such as this.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful movie...but.......2007-01-23

..I don't understand all the comments about how the husband is "too perfect to be believable". He's not perfect, he's weak. He allows himself to be walked over, and is so anxious to keep the peace that he does not defend his daughter or the employees. This type of weakness is a serious flaw, in my opinion, because it causes others to believe that he is giving tacit approval; he's more scared of his wife than protective of his daugher. I still like the husband, but I guess I am commenting on the other reviewer's comments, which I frankly don't understand. I had no idea that Adam Sandler and Tea Leoni were such good actors. Thumbs up for an absorbing movie!

The only real problem with Stir of Echoes has nothing to do with the movie itself, but with unlucky coincidence. Adapted from a Richard Matheson novel, this film arrived around the same time as The Sixth Sense, and surface similarities made it suffer by cursory comparison and the competing film's phenomenal success. It's a pity, because this one features one of Kevin Bacon's best performances, in a psychological thriller that makes a lot more right moves than wrong ones. Bacon plays a blue-collar guy who laments his ordinary life, only to learn, when his sister-in-law (Ileanna Douglas) hypnotizes him, that he is a "receiver" capable of seeing spirits and split-second glimpses of past and future events. It's a torturous gift to have--especially since his friendly Chicago neighborhood possesses a dark secret--and Bacon plays the role with an appropriate mixture of obsession and internalized torment.

Similarity to The Sixth Sense applies only to the basic premise and the character of Bacon's young son. Otherwise, this is more of a hard-edged journey of self-discovery, marital crisis, and recovery, with Bacon's wife (played by the highly underrated Kathryn Erbe) involved in an underdeveloped subplot about a group of people who share Bacon's gift as paranormal "receivers." Furthering his career as a writer-director of intelligent thrillers, David Koepp makes a few missteps in pacing and thematic overkill, but overall Stir of Echoes is a sharp, sensitive thriller that unfolds to reveal a dramatically satisfying solution to its mystery. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars An atmospheric horror movie!.......2007-04-28

Stir of Echoes is one of my favorite horror movies. It is effective as a horror movie without resorting to excessive violence, gore or sex, and Kevin Bacon shines as the protagonist who suddenly finds himself 'gifted' in being able to see and hear supernatural entities. The old haunted house premise is given a twist here with Bacon trying to communicate with the spirit and hoping to discover what is preventing the spirit from being at rest...it is a sad horror story, and as another reviewer mentioned does have similarities with The Changeling, and of course The Sixth Sense [frankly I prefer Stir of Echoes]. If you are a fan of atmospheric horror, and love spine-tingling stories minus the blood, gore & sex then this is for you.

5 out of 5 stars very spooky!.......2007-02-24

oh man are you in for a surprise with this film. kevin bacon invokes a whole new spirit ans a fresh new way of looking at the world between life and death.

2 out of 5 stars Good but not memorable.......2007-02-19

"Stir of Echoes," updated from an old novel by Richard Matheson, came out in 1999 soon after the huge hit "The Sixth Sense." Whether intentionally or not, the two films resemble each other enormously: the restless dead communicate with a little boy, and an adult is drawn into that communication. "The Sixth Sense" (the only truly good thing by director M. Night Shyamalan) is more moody, inventive, and compelling (if a little self-important, like Shyamalan himself); it obviously hit a nerve with audiences and critics. Needless to say, it eclipsed "Stir of Echoes," a decent film but one that treads too well-worn territory. Somehow, the ordinary setting is *too* ordinary. I really didn't care about the dull lives of the characters; they were unappealingly presented. Neither did I care about the ghost, though her victimization in life gave me the same feeling of anger when I hear news items about similar violence against women. The acting is professional but uninspired. It's probably Kevin Bacon's best work, but frankly, that's not saying much. He generally delivers his lines in an uninflected monotone and is stiff throughout; and while Bruce Willis was almost as wooden in "The Sixth Sense," Haley Joel Osment's performance as the prescient child was so overwhelming and expressive that Willis hardly mattered. Here, the kid (played by Zachary David Cope) is almost window dressing so Bacon's dull performance has no help. The direction, by the screenwriter, is unobtrusive at least but it constantly borrows images from other films, often very irritating. Worth a look, but you probably won't want to go back for a second viewing. The extras are plentiful but unbelievably uninteresting. They are presented to look like the analogous features on the DVDs of "The Ring" and "The Sixth Sense." The distributor, Lions Gate, seemed to think so little of this film's marketability that they felt it necessary to connect it with two more successful--and original--supernatural thrillers of the period by imitating the DVD presentation.

4 out of 5 stars Really enjoyable.......2007-02-09

I first saw Stir of Echoes on the SciFi channel, and I really enjoyed it. When I saw the film at the store this evening, I pounced on it.

This film is definitely well-filmed and very well-acted. Kevin Bacon and Kathryn Erbe are believable as a married couple, and the little boy who plays their son is great. I usually find that children play parts that are too precocious or too (whether purposely or not) annoying, but this boy was quite realistic.

I wouldn't call myself a huge horror or thriller fan, but this one was really good. (It helped that I watched it with the lights on....) The story did get somewhat predictable toward the end, but that certainly didn't stop me from buying it so I could watch it again.

One technical aspect that I didn't like--on the Special Edition DVD, the menus are incredibly annoying; this is probably kind of hard to grasp without actually seeing what I'm talking about. The menu design is supposed to be edgy--the menu names wibble and shift with distortions, and occasionally the text completely disappears. Again, this is part of the design because it corresponds to some scenes in the film and it adds to the mood. However, when I'm trying to actually access the deleted scenes or play the film, I don't want to have to wait and make sure I have "Play" selected while all I can see on the screen is the word "See" backwards. It's minor and doesn't affect the film, but it is a pain.

4/5. Good stuff.

4 out of 5 stars Good, effective terror film.......2006-12-16

This is a good and effective terror film, one of the best of 1999, far better than the overrated, pretentious (and somewhat similar in plot) "The Sixth Sense". Actually, the plot of "Stir of Echoes" seems lifted from 1979's "The Changeling", a very good terror film starring George C. Scott that deserves to be better known. The scene where Kevin Bacon starts an excavation in his backyard hoping to find the remains of the person who has become a ghost has a very similar scene in the Scott movie. But similarities aside, this film will most likely satisfy those looking for good chills.

5 out of 5 stars It really works.......2007-04-26

I bought this set when my daughter was 9 months old. She didn't have much interest in it until she was a little over a year old and now she is two and loves them. She knows all the words to the entire set and I am now buying more of their videos.

5 out of 5 stars It worked for us........2007-02-12

Give it time. It does work. My litle girl, now 3, likes the music and is now speaking right along and with the DVD. Additionally she is now picking up on the sign language cues and starting to use them with me as well.

It does work...but I guess the key thing is to find out what works best for your child and that may take time. Perhaps if the local libraries carried these than parents could test them out to see how well their children would become engaged.

Again, this is working for us.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent product for babies learning to talk.......2007-02-04

This has been the favorite video for James who is now 18 months but has watched this since he was about 12 months old. His speech is clear because he has copied the speaker and says the words as she is saying the words and she pronounces them slowly and carefully. He also likes some of the Baby Einstein videos, particularly the ones with animals, but he goes to the television and asks for "Bee" probably because of the trains, buses etc.

5 out of 5 stars My boys love it!.......2007-01-10

Both my sons loved this video as toddlers. It is very simple. It shows the picture, the name and says what it is. It is another tool to use with my toddler to learn the names of things and it is another great way for my preschooler to learn to spell. They both enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars It's what it took for us.......2006-10-14

My 26 month old daughter was on the verge of being diagnosed with a speech delay, and I really didn't to deal with a speech therapist and all that. So, I was desperate, trying everything I could think of to get her talking. I bought Baby Babble (which I think is at a lower level than where she was), discovered online books, did everything I could think of.

My daughter is a very energetic little girl, doesn't like to sit still for any amount of time EXCEPT for the television or the computer. So, I knew that my solution would probably have to include the computer or the TV. I discovered online books, and was reading her books in a format where she couldn't tear them up, but the computer couldn't hold her attention long enough to finish a story. (Some two year olds have the attention span of a gnat, and my girl is one of them!)

When I was considering Baby Bumblebee, I read enough about the format to know that it's kind of like moving flashcards. So, I went to the BB website, downloaded their flashcards and used them for a week with my girl. And it seemed to be working. So, I went ahead and bought VB1. By the end of the first week, my husband and I were discussing moving her on to video 2; she's pretty much mastered video 1.

The thing I like about this that you can't get with flashcards is that it's a video. It moves and it gives you several examples of the word. Cat or Car can mean many different looking things, and kids can't learn that as well with flashcards. Seriously, if I use a flashcard for Car with a VW Bug, I don't know that she'll automatically make the connection that a Honda Civic is also a car.

And I'd like to also make the statement that unless you are willing to work with your child a bit on some of the words taught in the video, it's not going to work nearly as well. I'm still using flashcards with her to reinforce what she sees in the videos.

Also, you can't just set your child down in front of the TV and walk away. You need to watch the video with your child and act excited over what you see, to keep the child interested in learning. Too many parents think that they can just pop in the DVD and go do their thing, which IMO is a very lazy way of parenting. Again, most two year olds don't have a very large attention span, so you need to be there to keep them from being distracted. I knit while my daughter's watching this, which is a great way to supervise her without being totally unselfish at the same time.

There's something intrinsically funny about tactlessly truth-telling talking animals. And there are plenty of those--and laughs to go with them--in this 1998 reimagining of Hugh Lofting's children's story. Murphy plays the doctor in question, a modern-day San Francisco physician who discovers that he can understand what animals have to say. Director Betty Thomas makes the most of an amazing voice cast for the animals, led by Norm McDonald and including everyone from Garry Shandling to Julie Kavner to Albert Brooks. The story itself is pretty slim--will the conscientious doctor sign his soul away to a greedy HMO?--but Murphy makes the most of it, often providing priceless reactions to animal voices only he can hear. --Marshall Fine

Description

A successful physician and devoted family man, John Dolittle (Murphy) seems to have the world by the tail, until a long-suppresses talent possessed as a child - the ability to communicate with animals- is suddenly reawakened with a vengeance! Now every creature within squawking distance wants the good doctor's advice, unleashing an outrageous chain of events that turn his world upside down!

Featuring an all-star menagerie of voice talent (including Chris Rock, John Leguizamo, Norm MacDonald, Albert Brooks, Gary Shandling and Ellen DeGeneres), this wild and woolly free-for-all is your prescription for hilarious hijinks and "mischievous fun!" (The New York Times)

1 out of 5 stars Read the book instead.......2007-01-11

Just a note to those who were uncomfortable watching this film with their children; movies have ratings for a reason. This movie is rated PG-13, which tells you up front that it has content that is considered inappropriate for children. In this case, it is crude humor.
What I don't understand is why they made a movie with a story line aimed at a young audience, and then inclduded content that earned it a rating that recommends that a young audience shouldn't see it.

5 out of 5 stars You Can't go wrong with Doolittle.......2006-07-13

This is such a hysterical movie... my husband and I love it... we had to buy it. Its a "must" in the house.

5 out of 5 stars Eddie Murphy makes it work: animal lovers will love this.......2006-01-20

Set in San Francisco and not England, the American Dr. Dolittle is just as comical as the original British vetrinarian in the 1960's muscial. When Dr. Dolittle's animal telepathic skills resurface he not only is sent to a mental institution but he ends up having to save a circus tiger's life. This California rendition complete with scenic shots of the Bay Area, is a departure from the children's books, but succeeds in its key message: either be yourself or nothing at all even if the mass population thinks you're crazy. Not being true to yourself is the direct route to driving you truly crazy.

4 out of 5 stars Dr. Dolittle DVD ~ Betty Thomas [DVD] .......2005-09-13

ABSOLUTELY a great DVD! Thank You. (shipping was behind than most)

3 out of 5 stars A good remake (improved by *not* being a musical).......2005-01-24

A remake in name only, 1998's Dr. Dolittle casts a mercifully non-singing Eddie Murphy as the vexed vet. He regains his long-forgotten childhood power to understand the thoughts of animals after accidentally hitting a dog with his car one dark night (he hears the dog yell, "Bonehead!" before it gets up and scampers away). Suddenly a psychic radio wave is beamed to all animals, everywhere, and they flock to Dr. Dolittle for medical advice. Unlike the tuneful Rex Harrison character, Murphy's Dr. D is reluctant to accept his gift and goes to such great lengths to hide it, that those around him begin to suspect that he's got bats in his belfry.

When a circus tiger (voiced by Albert Brooks) falls seriously ill, Dolittle decides to do the right thing. Other animals include a drunken monkey (voiced by Phil Proctor), a flatulent rat (voiced by John Leguizamo), an obssesive-compulsive mutt (voiced by Gilbert Gottfried), and a thorny owl (voiced by Jenna Elfman). A sequel, also starring Murphy in the title role, was released in 2001 (with Steve Zahn giving voice to a lovelorn brown bear).
